Holy moly is this GREAT. I am writing it still sitting at the table. We arrived here based on proximity to the expressway on a road trip from Chicago to Gatlinburg. With us are five vegetarians and a person fatally allergic to fish. All of us eat Thai food all the time in Chicago, and this place can compete with ANY place we've eaten back home. They had no issue substituting tofu for chicken in any dish, keeping fish out of the sauce, and suggesting appetizers. The service was friendly, the food was absolutely DELICIOUS, and most importantly, everything was totally fresh. What a great meal!!!!

The owners are super nice and pleasant!Appetizer fried tofu was pretty authentic and good. Crisp outside and tender inside; not greasy at all. My chicken vegetable soup was so plain that I don't know what to say!! I was totally appalled when the hot food were served! Shocked! For dining in the soup was served in plastic container and so was the sauce for the tofu and styrofoam box for the tofu!! Not environmentally friendly plus hazardous to the health!

Found this little gem on the way to Louisville and loved the tofu red curry!! Everyone in our group of 5 loved their meal.

This is probably the best Thai in the state-the food is great and the waiter is hilarious and very nice. I usually get the Pad See Ew but have sampled most of the menu and it is all very tasty!

Loved it! First time for my wife and I and it was delicious! The place is a bit suspect from the outside but don't let that deter you. It is incredibly clean (100% on recent inspection) and the service was excellent. Portions are perfect size and they come in a to-go container - cool idea! We will be back for sure.

We ate here for the first time, on a Wed. night for early dinner before a show at EKU. Our niece had recommended it; she is an EKU grad. We had no trouble finding it since someone had said to look for Little Caesars. However, I think that looking for Subway would have made it even easier to find. We were lucky to arrive just before the mad dinner rush - I think a lot of people attending the show were there, I know at least a few were. While we ate the line of people waiting kept growing - I think 12 were waiting when we left. The man who showed us to our table was probably the owner, and was very nice. The waitress was probably his family member, and did a good job & was nice. I LOVE that they leave a water pitcher on the table for us to refill. I understand why they use the styrofoam containers (Yes it is cheap, but I HATE styrofaom - it is so bad for the environment) for appetizers, and nicer plastic microwave containers for the entrees. It does make it easier for the college student crowd & take home, no dish washing either. I was glad that the hot entree was NOT in styrofoam because that would release toxic chemicals into the food. Our 4 different appetizers were all good - all typical fried food (which I don't usually eat). We both got an entree that was a version of fried rice, mine #60 with pineapple & cashews, his was a #58 combination rice. Both were tasty & a huge portion, but kind of colorless & mostly rice. I added more pineapple to mine when I finished it at home.

Thai smile is the only delicious Asian cuisine option for vegetarians in Richmond. I am so impressed. I can't believe I didn't eat there sooner!

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Sure it is hidden away in a tired little strip mall. And yes, the hours are funky. 11 am - 2pm for lunch. Dinner starts at 430 pm till 830 pm. I have to say that being served in take away containers threw me at first. I find that its really quite a brillant move. You finish your meal and and ask for a sack to take the rest with you. I'm all for eliminating the middle man. I had the Pad Kee Mow(spicy noodle). I chose medium heat as spice level always varies with Thai food. Very tasty but I think I could have easily moved up to the hot tier for spice. If you like a kick, medium is not going to do it. Bummed to see so few curries which suprised me. No peanut curry either. No matter but I would like to see a potato curry (Masaman) on the menu. I would say one of my faves. I digress, Get to this place and try it out!! Small tip if I may. The bypass (876) is a busy road and the signage for the restaurant is very small and hard to spot. Look for Little Caesar's and pull beside it.

Excellent Thai food for a very good price. The owner is absolutely phenomenal, very welcoming and pleasant. Definitely our favorite restaurant in the Richmond/Lexington area!

Love the Thai smile noodle bowl, pad thai, tomkagai, and the Panang curry. Basically I've liked everything I've tried there

Don't let the strip mall it's in fool you! This place is a hidden gem. You can choose your desired level of spiciness on most entrées. They also have some neat teas and dessert drinks to try. Always delicious. I haven't been disappointed yet.

I travel a lot for work and have eaten a lot of Thai, even at the renowned Jitlada in LA. However Thai Smile is still one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to. Not only is the service and food awesome but they will prepare your food any way you want. For example, I'm a chili head and love spicy food, and they will make my dish 200* and no they don't throw extra crushed red peppers. They actually put some sauce and habanero peppers etc. Hoping one day they will use ghost peppers. Regardless they have the best rice and pad thai I have ever. Easily 5 stars and I will keep going back.

Thai Smile is absolutely the best restaurant in Richmond. The service is fast, kind, and funny. The owner is always, always at the restaurant and he many times has taken our orders himself. He is always talking to customers and helping everyone he can. You can get a large range of traditional, authentic Thai food. I always get Chicken with Vegetables and my roommate gets the Chicken Fried Rice. You can get it in a range of 1 star to 5 stars in spice, but if you ask he will make your food as spicy as you would like. The prices are very reasonable as the food is almost more than you can eat. All around, it is the best food I have ever had in Richmond. Did I forget to mention I have never waited more than 10 minutes for food and normally only wait 5?

So good! I love the ambience. It's like a hole in the wall type of place, where the owner knows everyone. It's really quiet. No music playing. Everyone has quiet conversations. It's really relaxing. They serve the food in plastic containers, which I find convenient because you can just close it and take it home. If you're snobbish and expect royalty treatment, then go eat elsewhere. Here, you will be treated nicely, but like they've known you forever. I like it. The food is delicious and abundant. You won't be disappointed.

This is the best Thai in Kentucky. The Chicken Pad Thai is fantastic.

Thai Smile is the definition of a hidden gem--tucked away in a strip mall beside Little Caesar's, it isn't exactly the picture of an ideal location. With that being said, however, it's absolutely outstanding. This place has the best Thai food I have ever had ANYWHERE. Service is outstanding and crazy fast--we are always greeted warmly and seated immediately. The servers are more than happy to help or give suggestions and they never come across as being anything but friendly. As I said above, the food itself is amazing, and you can order it however you like (spicy/not spicy, no meat, etc.) The pineapple tangerine chicken in particular is unique and delicious, never found anything like it elsewhere--not that you could go wrong with anything off the menu. I always like to order something different every time I go. No matter what, we always start with the curry puffs, and I recommend that you try them as well; they are delectably crispy pastries that strike a wonderful balance between sugar and spice. In short, I am totally in love with Thai Smile.

We just moved here recently and discovered this Thai restaurant. It is one of the best Thai places I have eaten. The owners are nice and funny and service is excellent. I will be coming back here at least once every other week!

We are big fans of Thai Smile. So much so that we served their food at our wedding! The dumplings...yum. And the garlic grouper is crisp and delicate and worth the price.

Excellent food and service! Consistent - always fresh and flavorful. Owner has wonderful memory; knows just what we want each time! Great for take-home as well; packaged carefully. Highly recommend.

Located in the most run down, hole in the wall strip malls in Richmond - I would have never guessed when walking in that this would become one of my favorite restaurants... Very reasonably priced, very large servings (with plenty to take home), and "perfectly spicy" you literally rate on a scale of 1-5 how spicy you would like your dish... I have to recommend the Pineapple Tangerine Chicken, 3 "stars", and an egg roll... Also - be sure to try the banana dessert thing - it's delicious!

Fantastic local Thai place in Richmond! I always get pad Thai or fried rice. The service is great and everyone there is super friendly. It is kind of a dive type place, but it is great and the food is at a great price. I always take people there when they come in from out of town.

I find it hard to give 5 star reviews to little restaurants that are snugly nestled in strip malls, but I found it harder NOT to give Thai Smile 5 stars, so there you go. When you walk in you realize you can sprint to the back of the store in 10 seconds, the small eatery provides you with excellent service, because max capacity is around 50 people. I have never had a bad server here, they're always helpful and friendly, and VERY prompt. I try something new every time I go, but my girlfriend always has the Pad Thai, and I usually end up eating her left overs too. The spicy is SPICY, so don't order too hot, or they'll have to take it back and re make it (which they have only had to do once for me, and didn't charge) The fried rice is OK, i've had better, but I don't go for the fried rice. Overall, if you're in Richmond and like Thai Food and HAVEN'T eaten here, go NOW! And college kids beware, don't drink after eating the 5 star food, it's not a good combo the morning after.. Yeesh!

I chose this restaurant while passing through due to its incredible reviews received on Yelp. I must say that I was a bit disappointed. The food, especially for being Thai, was pretty expensive, certainly more than I had been expecting. Almost every entree is ten dollars or more. Due to this, along with the positive reviews, I was anticipating being blown away by my dish. It was a bit of a let down. I've definitely had better (it was the Thai classic, Pad Thai) and for much cheaper. Clearly many people truly love this restaurant, and I think that the shock of the prices greatly affected my experience, but I was not nuts about it, as everyone else seems to be.

I just ate here, and the glow of delicious pad woon sen still warms my belly. Thai Smile is number 5 of 5 in my tour of Thai cuisine in the regions including and surrounding Lexington and it is, hands down, the best. It pains me, therefore, that it is also the farthest away from where I reside. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but the interior is reasonably warm and homey, and this family-owned business is run like a well-oiled machine. We were seated quickly, our orders were taken after a polite 3-minute interlude, and our food was brought out to us, "Holy-crap-is-this-McThai?!" quick. I assure you, speed didn't negate quality. We went with our usuals (how else to compare one joint to another?), pad kee mow and pad woon sen. Her pad woon sen looked, smelled, and tasted fantastic. My pad kee mow looked great, but smelled and tasted vaguely of fish. Which is odd, because this has never been the case before, and our server assured us there was no fish sauce in it. Despite her assurance, she was happy to take it back and bring me pad woon sen when I asked, and did so with a smile. Perhaps somebody had ordered a seafood dish right before mine was prepared, allowing for cross-contamination. Hard to say. I hate complaining about my food or sending it back, but she made it painless. The food was fantastic, the service is lightning fast and friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Why only 4-stars? Atmosphere is lacking just a touch, and I've had slightly better in a few places in my days on the left coast, but this is by far the best I've had anywhere in a south/east direction (including Atlanta). Check it out if you have a chance.

I had the green curry per their commendation. It was sweet and spicy with the coconut milk. Will be going back. Their customers were mostly regulars. they were very friendly and eager to service.

Here with colleagues in celebration of the year's accomplishments. So we had two Bangkok Combo's, Nam Sod, Pad See Ew, and a Vegetable Delight with tea and water all around, finished with a Sleeping Banana. "Delightful, awesome and I will come back again," were the recorded reflections.

One of our favorite paces to visit when we are in Richmond (we only live about 20 minutes away). The family atmosphere is so great and the food is absolutely amazing, we go there often enough to know all of the employees and we are always greeted with a smile. My advice is to get there when they open for lunch as soon as you can they are often very busy though they are never slow with food it always arrives quickly and steaming hot. Though it may look like a hole in the wall dont let the facade fool you one of the best restaurants in the city

Great Thai food!!! Very reasonable and quick service! Owner is very friendly and makes solid effort to be personable with patrons. Great as take-out, too! Their chicken pad Thai, pad kee mow, and chicken pineapple curry are my favorites :)

The sate sauce was horrible and did not taste like peanuts at all. Chicken was dry. The main meal had very little meat over lots of lettuce. Everything was overspiced and not in a good way. Meal was way overpriced for what you get. I will never eat there again. Casa Fiesta has much better food for less but it is Mexican.

Tasty, friendly, excellent service: My coworker and I strolled in the door 10 minutes before Thai Smile was supposed to close until reopening later in the day for their dinner shift. Having worked in the food service industry, I know how frustrating it can be to have customers walk in right before the store closes. I was expecting to have hurried service and cold food. Instead, the manager, Suta, greeted us warmly and seated us promptly, even giving each of us a cup of the soup of the day which was delicious, flavorful, and a great way to begin my first experience here. For my meal, I ordered their crab rangoons along with pad see ew (chicken with noodles, broccoli, and ground peanuts). The rangoons were cooked to perfection and presented with a modest elegance. The pad see ew was absolutely delicious. I ordered mine as a 3-star (middle of the road spiciness level), which provided the perfect level of spice. I noticed that in the middle of our dining experience, Suta had to leave, and was replaced by one of the cooks, who was also an excellent waiter. If you have the chance to stop by in Richmond, KY, you won't be disappointed with this quaint mom & pop Thai restaurant. Great price, great quality food, and great atmosphere.

If you are in Richmond, KY try not to miss out on this gem! It's a tiny, family run restaurant with some of the best Pad-Thai I have ever tasted. The staff is so friendly and they seem to recognize you if you go in more than twice and are always very warm. Occasionally the restraunt will post a "temporarily closed" sign for some family reason, but it's always worth the trip back when the doors open again. Often at lunch they will offer a free appetizer with your meal. I am a big fam of the steamed dumpling! They will deliver within the city of Richmond for a small fee.

  • Jules S.

For Richmond, KY, this is good Asian food...for anywhere else, eh, it's okay. If I'm really craving Thai food, I'll drive to Lexington because Thai Smile won't really hit the spot.

Stopped at Thai Smile for lunch and was surprised to find an authentic Thai restaurant with a great selection. The food is cooked to order. You can order an entree 1 star with no spice up to very, very spicy. Tofu is always an option. The Panang Curry Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice are very good. Try the steamed dumplings as a starter. Lunch prices are about half dinner prices.

All I want to say is that I love this restaurant. I went there like three times or four times already, still not getting tired of eating Thai foods. I ordered Pork Noodles with spicy 5 level. I enjoyed eating it so much. The smell makes my stomach shouting, my mouth watery , my brain blurry, my eyes concentrating on the foods only. As I went there with my friends, all of my friends were loving their ordered Thai Foods.

Wonderful place to eat in Richmond. I always get the pad thai or Bangkok combo. The staff is as friendly as their food is good!

  • E.J. S.

Bottom Line; This is Richmond, KY, home of exceptionally bad Asian food. I'm giving it 4 stars because having a restaurant like Thai Smile to go to is a real blessing. The neighborhood Thai Smile is in has a mixed-bag of reasons to be there. Even the strip center it's in has a multiple-personality (the computer repair place does a good job and the Mexican grocery/restaurant is great too). The restaurant itself is small and has the general look and feel of every owner -operated Thai restaurant you've been to in other cities; smiles and greetings, pictures of the king, elephants, a genuine happiness to see you and their almost instant knowledge of whether you've been there before. It's not as cheap as we thought it would be ( Dinner entrees run from $10 for a veggie stir fry, to $17 for a few of the seafood entrees), but that's a good thing for them to have been able to do for themselves. Because this area has neither a large Thai community or diners well versed in Thai cuisine, their menu features more Chinese-style stir fry dishes than anything else. There is green and red curry to have in various forms. There is Thai heat to be had, and that's a very good thing. But things you might have learned to love on menus found in Thai restaurants in larger cities simply won't be here - they have no audience and hence no reason to stock for and then just have waste away in the walk in. But what there IS to eat is fresh, tastes good, and is served with genuine graciousness. These are fine things, and well-worthy of supporting in this otherwise Asian food wasteland. One warning, if it says "Crab" it's actually "Krab". We obviously weren't into our "Krab" Fried Rice ($12.95) and they happily made us a shrimp version we liked a lot better. Kob Kun Mak

Terrific Thai food within easy driving distance of Berea. The owner is fast and friendly, and the food is absolutely delicious. Pad kee mow is a favorite, with tofu. The spice is adequate, more than some 'thai' restaurants in the area, but could be better. A delicious meal well worth the visit.

My favorite Thai restaurant and a regular stop for my wife and I between Knoxville and Central Ohio where our family is. I love the curry soups. In fact, most of their soups are awesome. Can't remember the names of the dishes. The Pad Thai is very peanutty which could use a little more spice requested the next time we order it. Small joint in a run down strip mall off the freeway. Don't pass it up!

Good food, super-friendly staff. We had a group of 13, and the food came out quickly. The waiter spoke to us as if we were regulars. The hot pad Thai was good, although it didn't have any vegetables. I'll definitely be back when I'm in Richmond.

Firstoff, the food tasted good, the service was great, and the prices were reasonable. However, for those of us who are looking for more authentic Thai food, I'd say skip Thai Smile. I ordered Pad Thai (perhaps the simplest of all Thai dishes and a staple of any Thai restaurant). The dish came out much too fast to have been freshly made. It contained no fresh vegetables but was simply a pile of noodles smothered in an over-salted peanut sauce. The tofu was dried out and shrivled and was obviously not prepared fresh. Upon a quick review of what others ordered, I had made up my mind. All other dishes were far too high in grease and too low in freshness. Additionally, many essential Thai staple dishes were alltogether missing from the menu. I suspect this is because of the difficulty in finding authentic asian ingredients in a place as un-asian as Kentucky. All in all, if you are used to fast food and Chinese buffets Thai Smile is great. If you are used to more authentic Thai food however, you will be disappointed.
