This place is amazing. Anyone who lives in Norton Commons or beyond should embrace this place. Nice environment, pet friendly on the terrace for local morning walkers. Lori the owner is lovely. Best brunch in Louisville.

We love this restaurant. The food is always really good and the bright interior is always refreshing.

I was very disappointed in my meal. I ordered the Bacon Gouda Hamburger. Instead of being cooked to medium as I ordered, it was well done and the outer edges were even crispy. It was dressed with a huge leaf of lettuce and a tomato slice that was so unripe it was not even pink but closer to white in color. I had just been to the grocery so I know better looking tomatoes are available. The fries, on the other hand, had no color and crispness at all. We did have excellent service.

This restaurant has the distinction of the worst coffee I have ever tasted. Sadly even Waffle House has better coffee. When I ordered a cup of coffee I expected a great cup given the location and nice appearance of the restaurant. However the coffee I was served tasted like I imagine dish water would. After mentioning it to a waitress she said "the owner knows but it' some fancy roast and the owner thinks it's good." It might be halfway good if they used enough coffee in the brewing process to allow you to taste coffee. Upon further questioning, the waitress even confided that she goes out to grab a cup elsewhere sometimes on a break. It is hard to imagine that an owner of a breakfast and lunch only restaurant if brought to there attention would not try to correct something as fundamental as a decent cup of coffee. Not surprising given some other reviews. Perhaps they should check out their competition at Wild Eggs who serves an amazing cup of coffee.

Updating my previous review based on a new experience. While we still love Verbena for the food and atmosphere, I was incredibly disappointed to see that family members (or people the manager knows well) are able to walk in and be seated immediately when the lobby is full and the rest of us are waiting 30 minutes plus. I was standing not 4 feet from the hostess stand and saw 2 younger men walk in; they were greeted with a hug from the hostess and manager. When told the wait time they said they may go somewhere else, so they were given the only open table, which, as custom dictates, should have gone to the next on the list. Every customer waiting in the lobby witnessed that. Poor form. If this continues we will not be returning.

Brunch with the family. I had the Steak Skillet which was excellent and filling. Only minor complaint was that the skillet itself was too small to fit all the food. That made it challenging to cut the steak and get a good bite.

Digs - 4.3/5 - spacious, clean, garden-themed decor, friendly staff, fast service Food - 4/5 - love their menu, just haven't always loved everything I've ordered and that's perfectly fine. They have a great selection of well portioned meals with farm fresh ingredients, and a wide array of choices. Coffees, teas, breakfast/brunch menu is the only one I've eaten from but I'd be curious about their lunch/dinner menu too, but I really like this places.

What a wonderful environment. The atmosphere is an average chatty of friends and family enjoying a great breakfast. I had the Banana Nut Bread French Toast, boy was it good and filling! Also had a side of bacon and eggs scrambled with cheese, that I split with my son. This marked my 4th trip here since I've heard of this little charming establishment. Service has been friendly and quick.

We were really happy to find a new place for breakfast and had high hopes for Verbena. The location is quaint and the restaurant itself very cute. But that's as far as the positive part of our experience went. The coffee was the worst I've ever had anywhere. My husband and I ordered two different items because we like to share. He ordered the crepes and I ordered Eggs Benedict. The crepes were doughy, undercooked and tasteless. The eggs Benedict were over cooked, the eggs were more like hard boiled rather than soft poached. And just when we thought it couldn't get worse, we told the waitress we wanted them redone and she went to one of the owners who came over and I showed her the over cooked eggs then she laughed saying "well they're not that bad , I was expecting worse". She went on to explain how they cooked their eggs. Frankly I don't care how you cook your eggs as long as they are as expected. Eggs Benedict yolks should flow once cut, not have a solid yolk. I might have expected such a response from wait staff, but never from an owner. I was completely appalled by the response of the owner. Needless to say we won't be back.

Verbena Cafe has a varied menu with something for almost everyone's desires. They are only open for breakfast and lunch so keep that in mind before you decide to drive to Norton Commons to dine here. I usually order the pumpkin bread French toast and it is always fantastic. They have a large selection of egg dishes, burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads too. I highly recommend that you give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

I came here with my friends on a Thursday morning. Only 2-3 other tables were filled. The waitress was super sweet and attentive. The coffee was alright. Nothing special. It's better than Denny's or ihop's coffee. I got the house skillet. It was alright. Maybe because I was eating everything at once, it just didn't taste as good as if they were separate. I dunno. The stuff on the bottom was getting soggy and oily. I can't pin point really what was wrong, but I can say it just didn't taste that great. The crepe was alright. I've definitely had better. Overall the experience was just okay. It's a cute place though.

The food is always Fantastic! The service has always been great. Then pancakes blow Wild Eggs out of the water. And the Potato Pancakes are some of the best I've ever had. Thing is it's not a secret how good Verbena is so get there early on the weekends.

I visited Verbena today to grab a salad for lunch on my way back to the office after a doctors appointment. I ordered the grilled chicken caesar salad and am completely disappointed in the quality of the chicken that they used. It had the texture and tasted like a processed chicken breast with some kind of seasoning embedded in it. For a salad that cost over $10 I would expect a fresh prepared piece of real chicken on my plate. The girl that waited on me at the counter was very pleasant and checked my order for accuracy and made sure the warm chicken was in a separate container as to not make the lettuce wilted, so thumbs up to her! I have had lunch there before and had a sandwich which was good but would just consider it average. This place has a ton of character and I love Norton Commons just wish they would set themselves apart and give quality food to their customers.

This is a great little venue in Norton Commons. Very busy on weekends. Good traditional breakfast and some unique items that are very yummy. House Skillet, egg burrito and curry chicken salad are great

Bad service for first time. Ask for club no tomato with mayo. Sandwich comes out no mayo with tomato. Ask server to take care of it. Takes my sndwich back and pulls apart club to remove tomatoes. When he brings back sandwich it looked like it was run over by truck and I still had to ask for mayo for third time. Usually like this place, but come on!

Everything from the previous review stands. However, the prices have gone up. They have gone from being on the high-end to tipping over to the very high-end.

Verbena Cafe is a cute spot way out on the East end of town in Norton Commons. It is only open for breakfast and lunch. This is one of those reviews where I wish Yelp let us give 1/2 stars because it was a solid 3.5, but not a 4. The atmosphere in the cafe was cute, bright and cozy. But the location is odd and out of the way, and I think the business would do better closer into central Louisville. Norton Commons is currently an incomplete planned community with a couple of store fronts, vacant lots and some matchy-matchy houses. I have to admit these neighbors kind of creep me out, so I was immediately turned off by the atmosphere outside. Inside was much better. Service was good although a little slow. I opted for breakfast food instead of lunch (although the sandwiches and soups at the tables around me looked yummy). I opted for one of their variations on Eggs Benedict - Ham, Swiss, Parmesan, Poached Eggs and Hollaindaise on an English Muffin. The Hollandaise sauce was homemade and tasty. Ham and Eggs were excelllent, but the English Muffin was not toasted or grilled as far as I could tell. Under the Hollandaise and Egg yolk it turned to pure mush. Disappointing. Still good, but soggy. The Verbena Browns were good but a little on the undercooked side, and not crispy like I would have expected. Bathroom doesn't have hooks for a purse and a coat which is always a frustration. Just had to wedge them onto the doorknob. You pay at the register as you leave. They weren't very busy, only a couple of tables occupied, and the woman who took my check abruptly stopped ringing me up, laid my check down and went to go seat another group coming in the front door. I found that to be rude. Complete the transaction with the customer in front of you. Overall, it was an A-OK spot, thus the 3 stars. I wouldn't drive out of my way to go there, but I would stop by again if I was already on that end of town.

A friend and I went to Verbena this week because it was close to where she works. We both ordered the Crispy Chicken Salad and i was hugely disappointed in what was served to us. We got a plate of field greens with 4 or 5 fried chicken tenders, still hot ( I don't care for wilted salad greens myself) and fanned out over the greens accompanied by a sliced hard boiled egg overly sprinkled with paprika. The honey mustard dressing served on the side tasted nice. As the server turned to leave I said "I thought "artisan"bread came with the salads" and he looked at me like I was insane and very sharply said "No", then, "Do you want some?" I said yes, we would. He returned a few minutes later with two thin slices of some grainy bread and one pre-portioned container of butter on a plate. My friend said, "May we have another butter please?" and again we were met with incredulity at the request. Some minutes later, he blessed us with one more container of butter. The server came by the table only once to refill drinks, he never cleared our plates nor did he ask if we were interested in dessert before he dropped off the check. I only just now looked at my receipt and noticed that I was charged $1.75 for the bread. In most restaurants I've been to, I have always been informed if I request something additional to my meal and there will be a charge. The server never said a word. For my first visit to this cafe, I am underwhelmed at the food and service and not likely to return.

A new establishment that is simply amazing! Menu offers delicious breakfast fare and a substantial lunch selection. Owners care about you (YOU) as their guests. Greeted and sat by the owner (Mike) and cashed out by his darling co-owner (Laurie). So - five stars - without question for food quality, portion, price and service. Craig did a great job waiting on us. What more can be said? For a harsh food critic, I give these guys a thumbs up - especially for a new concept. Assuming that everything continues to improve over time, this is going to be sure hit. Go now before you can't get a seat!

When I try a new restaurant, I like to try what they consider their house and signature dishes. So I tried their house Skillet and was wildly disappointed. Aside from the skillet being only decorative instead of hot, the asparagus was cooked (steamed) on the side leaning towards mush and the hash browns were sopping with oil. The only good part was the bread, which was well done. I tried also one of their egg specialties, the Eggs Burrito Olé (which aside from being spelled Ole' on the menu as if it were being done by someone with a typewriter-it wasn't) didn't really speak to the dish at all. The eggs looked like a substitute-not in and of itself bad-but they weren't seasoned at all. The pulled pork on this dish was out of place with the rest of the menu and a savory option would have fit both the decor and made it a more coherent statement. The atmosphere in the cafe was acceptable, even though leaving an open industrial ceiling looks lazy in new construction. Overall though, I think it failed in it's aspirations. They'd be best served by learning to use herbs in their preparation, learning and executing proper preparation, and dialing into creating something new, instead of being a simulation of an old feeling.

I live in the neighborhood and was excited when Verbena opened. After eating there a few times, I was less than enthused. The food honestly is middle of the road at best. What kind of breakfast place doesn't serve grits? They also kind of nickel and dime you at this place too. The service is very good and the owners are very nice people. Verbena is always packed and people seem to love it which always leaves me scratching my head. On the other hand, people in this neighborhood think that Johnny Bruscos is good pizza too... don't get me started on that place. Overall Verbena is nice and clean with good service and OK food.

usually when people go out to eat, it's b/c they want good food and don't feel like cooking at home. so of course i was completely appalled when we went to verbena and were served re-heated frozen french fries and kraft mac and cheese straight out of the box. i posted a picture so you can see i'm not exaggerating. this "restaurant' is serving processed packaged orange powdered "cheese" and trying to pass it off as food! and not only that, they tried to charge $6 for that teeny bowl. i'm pretty sure you can buy a whole box from kroger (you could even splurge and get the name brand) for 1/3 that price. i am an extremely amateur home chef, and even i have managed to master a tasty mac and cheese recipe made from scratch (i like alton brown's mac and cheese on foodnetwork.com ). and there's no excuse for frozen french fries. how hard is it to peel and cut a potato? even fast food chains like in-n-out make their fries from fresh potatoes. my nephew also had a lipstick stain on his water glass. so unsanitary conditions on top of the disgusting food is just another reason why we'll never come back. it really is too bad that the food was so terrible. the restaurant itself was bright and tastefully decorated and the waitress was very friendly. but i would still prefer an ugly hole in the wall restaurant w/ a grumpy waiter over this place, so long as they had good food and clean glasses.

My husband and I live in Prospect and used to be frequent Verbena Café customers. With all the excellent options around town for breakfast and lunch, we started eating elsewhere for a while and were quite happy with what we found at North End Cafe, etc. Still, we recently decided to try Verbena again and couldn't believe how much the place has deteriorated! The food -- which we used to love -- was downright poor (a "melt" sandwich that wasn't even warm nor melted, wilted salad greens, etc.) -- a drop in quality that is nothing short of staggering. The servers, whom we previously found to be upbeat and energetic, now seem sullen and slow. The atmosphere, which used to feel happy and homey, now feels hushed and sad. We remarked that it almost felt like we had walked into a fight in which the staff is displeased with Management. Feeling disappointed with the decline and uncomfortable with the palpable tension, we couldn't wait to leave. (Also, FYI: When we arrived, we went to park in the back as we always used to do . Though the space we pulled into still is marked Verbena Café, some guy on his smoke break came over, told us it's now reserved for the Owners, and made us move?!) We don't appear to be the only ones who are noticing how the place has tanked, as this once crowded restaurant was less than a third occupied at prime time on a Saturday. It's hard to believe Verbena will remain open much longer. It's a real pity since the Owners appeared to create a jewel at the outset and now either are distracted, deliberately making bad business decisions, or no longer care.

I have never written a review on Yelp before today since I normally just use the iPhone app, but my experience at Verbena Cafe was so lackluster that I had to bring out the laptop and say something. Skip this overpriced brunch place. The place looked clean and bright, and its decor was well suited to the capri and cardigan wearing crowd that populated its location in Norton Commons. We were immediately seated, and our waitress was prompt and friendly. My father ordered coffee and orange juice, my mother ordered orange juice, and I stuck with water. When our drinks came out, I was surprised at the small size of the orange juices. A quick sip of the less than 6 oz pour confirmed that this juice likely came out of a box or even a can. At over $2 for that tiny glass, I was expecting something more. My father ordered the Caliente Omelette, my mother ordered oatmeal, and I ordered Veggie Eggs Benedict. When our food came out, I immediately saw that my eggs benedict had bacon on it instead of the spinach and mushroom kind I had ordered. The waitress took it back, and I wondered how in the world on a slow morning could you neglect to bring the person who was inquiring about the meat content of several items on the menu one of the few vegetarian options available that she ordered? When I finally got my correct dish, which took quite a while, it was so doused and drowned in hollandaise that you would've never known what toppings were on it. I couldn't taste anything but hollandaise soaked bread. Paying $10 for what was essentially hollandaise soup did not bode well with me. I managed to eat half. My mother got oatmeal. At $6 for a measly bowl with a couple dried ingredients on the side, it was also a disappointment. Soggy, bland instant oats couldn't even be salvaged with brown sugar, as the little clump of brown sugar they provided was so rock solid that it couldn't be broken apart. My father liked his omelette, but he frequents Bob Evans, so what does he know. ;) For the three of us, the cost was over $40. Save your time and money, and go somewhere else. Even Wild Eggs is cheaper and better. My stomach doesn't feel so well as I'm writing this, so that's not a good sign either.

Ordered the Garden Omelet. It was the best I've ever had. Presentation was great. Taste was even better. Very dry and fluffy - not runny or greasy at all. Packed full of veggies. Attentive waitress. Set the bar incredibly high.

I eat at Verbena 2 to 3 times a week. I absolutely love it. They offer delicious breakfast and lunch menu choices with something for everyone. Everything is fresh and many of the recipes are original creations by the experienced restaurant owners. Its in their DNA and it shows with their concern for their guest and your overall dining experience. Yes like any business they have an off day, but 99% of the time you'll find the food and service exceptional and a great value too. My recent menu favorite, the Tuna Salad-Salad Is a great example and something I encourage you to experience. Yes I am referring to the salad vs the sandwich. Try it...YOU won't be disappointed!!!

Hold the phone. Norton Commons? What in the Sam Hill is this? What is happening to you, Louisville? I don't even recognize you anymore. So, yeah. On a mission to try somewhere new, I headed waaaay out (I used to live out this way and I still had no idea where I was going) and stumbled upon a planned community. In Louisville. It was thrilling and terrifying all at the same time. My first thought was, "Whoa. This is Louisville?" My second thought was, "If people wanted this kind of community, why don't they simply move to Old Louisville and keep our farmland farmland?" But that's neither here nor there. All it's to say is that if you're a native son or daughter who's moved away, come out to NC and gaze upon thy... [however you see it]. Shock of the area abated, I wandered inside and sat down. The interior is very welcoming. It reminded me of an updated country diner. So far, so good. My family and I came here for brunch on a Saturday and that may have been our mistake. Yes, this is the kind of place one comes to for brunch but the waitstaff was all over the place and not in a good way. Despite the restaurant not being packed to the gills, flagging down a server and getting friendly, interested service was a hardship. That's too bad. When in a 'new Mayberry,' I expect a Mayberry-esque experience. Oh well. Maybe the food wil make up for it. Here's the ever-present question when it comes to brunch: savory or sweet? As much as possible, I like to blend the two but sometimes that just doesn't work out. Not figuring out a way to combine the two tastes, I went savory. I should have gone sweet. I ordered the Caliente! omelet and the description outshone the actual taste. On paper, it sounded like a winner: pork carnitas, jack cheese, peppers, onions, and a black bean jalapeno corn relish. Sounds awesome, right? Imagine my surprise when I took a bite and what struck me rather than 'heat' or 'spice' was 'bland.' Bland. How in the world can those ingredients combine to create a bland flavor profile? I don't know, but it happened. I ordered hashbrowns to go with my eggs and they were on the 'overdone' (read: burnt) side. Thankfully, the bread and fresh fruit of the meal were tasty. Don't get me wrong: I've had worse omelets. Hmm, that's not a ringing endorsement, though, is it? Caveat emptor and all that. So, three stars? The idea is nice. The location is oddly interesting. The decor is pleasant. The bread & fruit are tasty. The price point is fair. And (most important of all) they serve real sweet tea. In Louisville. I know! So, yeah. Three stars. Go sweet.

This place is so great! The atmosphere is adorable. It's the perfect brunch place. I ordered the Hot Brown. It was so good. I highly suggest it. My friends got Carnitas and Greek wrap and they loved their dish as well. The sweet tea is amazing. It's not overly sugar, just the right amount. For dessert we had banana Nutella crepes... unreal! The service was stellar! The waitress's name was Cassandra. She was always on the ball and super sweet. I highly recommend requesting her as your waitress if you come her. Best waitress I've had in a long time. So long story short, come here if you're looking for a great brunch place!

Check your bill closely. I don't write on the review sites normally, but the treatment I received from the owner of this place today justifies a review. This place is way overpriced. You can almost have brunch at the Seelbach for what it costs to have brunch here . The waiter ( which was new so I forgave the small mistake he made on our order twice) brought us the wrong bread. We asked for white toast instead of a roll. The owner didn't like having to correct the error and added a "white toast upgrade charge" to our bill. The menu is misleading. A la carte additions are not clearly listed and offered by servers as if they are part of the dish. Ie you will pay extra for white toast, really??? You will pay extra for cheese if you accept the offer. That's never told to you until you receive the bill. The menu portion that includes eggs states that French toast may be added for $1.50. I was in this place the other day and it was a add on to your order for $1.50. Today they charged a additional $9. I asked the new waiter to adjust the bill, which was $40 for two egg dishes with drinks and a side add on of French toast. The owner came out and told us, in a loud and raspy New Jersey accent, that we obviously didn't know how to read a menu. She refused to take the charges off. Orange juice is not fresh squeezed ,it tastes like it is from a can. Felt rushed through our brunch. Sorry but when I'm paying those kind of prices I'm not gonna be rushed. The prices are twice what they should be. The secret surcharges add more. The owner was one of the rudest people I have met in Louisville. She screamed at me from across the restaurant as we left. I will never step foot in this place again. A real shame. The workers are nice and work very hard. The owner doesn't support their mistakes. For her to hold a brand new employee accountable for a bread mistake and a side order mistake , just so she could have the $10 overcharge in her pocket instead of his as a tip, showed how little she cares about these kids. Most of them very young. She should have corrected the bill and apologized for the confusion. I would have returned to eat there again had she taken responsibility for the error. Instead she chose to make a scene and scream at me as we left because she did not like anyone standing up to her. Very clearly a female bully. If anyone needs to hire good waitstaff go here and offer these poor kids a job. Save them from this verbally abusive woman who is clearly not able to effectively handle the pressures of running a restaurant . She needs to attend a school of grace and charm. In the south it's called manners and having the courtesy to thank patrons for their business. I will never give this woman another dime of my money ever again. I agree with the others on this forum. Wild Eggs is a much better option and they serve fresh squeezed orange juice there as well! I can't recommend Verbena. Too much bait and switch taking place on the menu. $40 for two egg breakfasts before tip. Sorry there are much better options in town for that price! Other places appreciate your business as well and don't scream at you as you leave either. She lost my business permanently today. I hope she enjoys the ten bucks she overcharged me today. It'll be the last time she sees any of my money again.
