The best thing about CQ is the phenomenal outdoor deck over the river. If you've never been to CQ, go on a beautiful spring day for lunch or a pleasant summer evening with a cool breeze for dinner and sit outside. I've been to CQ 5 times and have never eaten indoors. Of course, the food is good though a bit pricey for the portion size (you're paying for the view). My favorite is their Bibb and Bleu Cheese Salad with grilled salmon (the salmon is optional).

OK, I keep going back because.....Menu choices? No, quality of food? no Service? no View? yes, atmosphere? yes. Captains Quarters has so much potential, yet the operators must just feel that their reputation as a great place to go and watch the Sunset is going to get them by. My wife and I are kinda new to area and were warned by ever single person who mentioned CQ that the view was great but the food and service is meh at best. We have now been there a 8-10 times and each time hoping for better food and service, I have just lowered my expectations before we go and then I'm not disappointed. Just like today. Example, Ordered drinks first which arrived timely, (ice tea) then after beckoning the very over stationed waitress we ordered our meal, BBQ Sandwich and Fish Sandwich. After 3 refills and an empty glass our food went wandering around the deck to several tables which did not recognize the order, the young man finally located us and served our food, training must have been ongoing because neither our delivery or any one else's went directly to a table, pretty humorous watching the young men trying to find the correct table. Next, we had no table service (forks and knives' and spoons oh my) Which we had to ask for, the young man went all the way to another part of the property to locate (training issue here) The food was served as advertised and was fresh from the kitchen. Waited a long time for our check. Bottom line, They have so much potential here that they are not tapping into, to bad. and training seems to an issue too. We will go back again with lowered expectations to watch the goings on at the river. Try sitting away from the outside bar, perhaps the wait staff is better trained in the main serving areas.

We will go again, but likely with reservations (it was very crowded by 6pm on a beautiful 80 degree Thursday evening), and for an early dinner. (not a very diverse crowd though, in case that sort of thing bothers you).

CQ has really, really gone downhill in the past couple years. True, the atmosphere is outstanding - beautiful location on the Ohio River with plenty of outdoor seating. The food does not do the surroundings justice, however. First, we got serious attitude from the hostess stand when we asked to switch our reservation to outside seating when I'd been told when I made the reservation that we could do so. We were told it would take an hour to accommodate us - yet on a Monday afternoon, there was a TON of outdoor seating available. So, we ate inside. Then, in my entire party of more than 10 people, not a single one of us would have rated our entrees better than mediocre. Veggie sandwich was more stale bun than vegetables and sans the goat cheese that was to accompany it; fish tacos were deemed by both in my party that had it as, "worst fish tacos they'd ever eaten;" onion rings were chewy; need I go on? A gratuity was added to the check, which would be fine for a large party IF they had told us they were doing so. If you choose to go for the atmosphere, stick with appetizers, as those were decent (but be warned: cocktails are super watered down). Better yet, pack a picnic and head to Cox's Park. Your view of the river will be comparable and the food far superior. Such a disappointment - CQ is cutting corners and it shows!

I'd always heard great things about C.Q.(from my boyfriend) Visiting from Ca. I suggested we go for a sunset ( the view is outstanding). My 4 star rating is contingent on the fact you realize that this restaurant is not Michelin guide, "haute-cuisine" but is a perfect counterpoint to "The Ri-vue"(Galt House, also on the river) @ one quarter the price-(hence the name)-lol. We ordered the hummus platter( generously served w/ pita, bruschetta, and cucumber dill dip) Fantastic Tuna tataki, which is as close to raw fish as this place gets, then we split the fish tacos, grilled, not fried, thank you! An entirely acceptable bottle of Australian red, promoted by our server, great taste without the aftertaste of exhorbitant markup! If your idea of a good time is a superb river view surrounded by folks with down home sensibilities or the occasional high elbowed birthday party, or shower, or whatever, this place is a can't miss on our list!

The atmosphere is great here. Tons of outside seating and frequent live music. Sunday nights are always hopping outside. They have Rogue Dead Guy Ale on tap. Great stuff if you have never had it. They have a great refreshing lunch dish of chicken salad in a pineapple boat. Very good. I had the Demer Fettucini recently and it was outstanding. Tasty and light. Perfect for summer.

Went to this restaurant today for the first time and it was really neat. The location was actually for an event I had to do for brand ambassadoring, but the owner was friendly to my team and I, as we were setting up our event (usually businesses kick us out for promoting anything). Anyway, the atmosphere was great (restaurant overlooks a boat harbor on both sides that, in turn, comes from the Ohio River. Owner gave us food on the house since we were working the event. I got the appetizer wings, Jamaican Jerk flavor, and it was pretty good. I think only buffalo wild wings beats them. No one can make it like Buffalo Wild Wings!!

Just like other people mentioned this restaurant has mediocre food but an amazing view. If the restaurant was anywhere else it would not last. I ordered a salad and the lettuce was very old, withering and brown. The server was useless as she didn't know anything about the menu or it's past items. Party of 6 for dinner. Couldn't tell that they had 2 feet of water throughout the building back in March. The environment inside was pleasant and not too noisy. I had chicken and waffles which had good flavor but the chicken was over cooked. My wife had the salmon po-boy which also had good flavor. The menu did not have a large selection in my opinion. I had key lime pie for desert and my wife had derby pie with bourbon ice cream - both were the highlight of the meal. Service was great and prices were reasonable

I went to a Baby Shower here, and it was very nice. We were in a smaller room that fit about 30 people. They served fried chicken, shredded bbq sandwiches (awesome!), pasta salad, potato salad, green beans, and several other side dishes. The food was pretty good, and the server was attentive (he kept up with clearing plates and filling drinks through the whole event). Overall, it was a very nice setting, and the food/service were good.

Excellent options for private parties. I have hosted many on the boat (the CQ Princess), the Veranda & one of my favorite spaces, the Stone Room. Love having Bourbon, BBQ & Bluegrass events overlooking the Ohio River. No one ever wants to leave in this type of setting. Quests get to experience Southern hospitality at it's best! Very impressive. I like to think that with all of my travels and my passion for any eatery on the water, I was thoroughly impressed with the architecture of this place. Unfortuanately we had dinner elsewhere so I cannot comment on the food but the atmosphere was outstanding and the view was perfect. I have been to a lot of crab shacks on many marinas and by rivers and ocean beaches and inlets around New England, SC, FL, Indiana, Ohio, Biloxi, NOLA,Texas, all over Cali, Oregon and Washington State but this place is still at the top of my list. Truly a hidden gem that I would not have found on Google because it is not downtown.

You won't be getting a culinary epiphany here but what you'll get is a spectacular view of the river and amazing outside seating (if you don't mind waiting for it). The food is good but on the pricy side. The steak is very large, topped with beautifully colored carrots, white baby onions and no A1 sauce needed! The small filet of Seabass artfully sits on top of quinoa salad but tastes a bit fishy to me (not a sign of freshness). I love the sides that accompany the Mahi Mahi but the fish itself is a bit overcooked. Both fish dishes are not worth the 20 something price tags. The Ceviche is lacking and the clam chowder is decent but not spectacular. I come here mostly for the atmosphere. The boats/yachts dock here for dinner/lunch, the sun sets directly in front of you, lawn chairs in the manicured lawn provide closeness to the river that not many other restaurants in town can provide. If you want to enjoy the restaurant for cheap, they now got a small food stand that sells hot dogs, burgers, etc. and drinks for under $5. Sit down at one of the law chairs or benches by the lawn to enjoy your fares. The river will sparkle and the warm summer breezes will sooth your soul.

Excellent location on the Ohio river. This place looks and IS huge! When you drive in and see the parking lot, you'll wonder how all these people fit here. Prob a good idea to get reservations? We arrived late around 9pm for dinner so no problem getting a table. I had the Kentucky Hot Brown which I've never had since I'm not from KY.. it was good! The rest of my group liked their food so-so. The Shrimp and grits were singled out as mediocre. We also ordered some cocktails... which were served in plastic cups!! Can you imagine? They couldn't wash some glass cups?? Anyway.. good place for the location and view of the river.

Really cool and large outdoor patio/bar on the Ohio river (I didn't experience the restaurant but it looked great). Pull your boat up, dock (free) and enjoy. Sports on the tv's, wide selection and good service. I was concerned with a review that said the health code rating was a C today it was an A. Gulf coast boiled shrimp were great and came peeled.

I wish there were an option for zero stars! My first and last visit to this place was by far the worst restaurant experience in my life. Our party of 6 "called ahead" for 7:00. When we arrived at 7:00, the hostesses told us that it would be a 2 hour wait. Refusing to accept this, we checked with them again and they said that "it shouldn't be too long". Forty five minutes later, they told us that it should be 20-25 minutes. 20-25 minutes later, I begged them for any table and they finally seated us 10 minutes later. When we were finally seated, our waitress was not very attentive. I poured my own glass of water. Our appetizer took 20 mins to arrive and our food came out an hour after we sat down. That being said, the ambiance is nice. The view of the river is relaxing. Just be prepared to wait and test your patience!

Heard a lot about this restaurant and was excited to try. I went with a friend recently and curt was our server. I ordered the ribeye medium rare and it arrived medium if I am being nice. I hate complaining at restaurants so I ate my ribeye regardless. My friend found a dead fly halfway through her meal which was very disgusting to both of us. When we informed the server he didn't even apologize and we left having to pay for the drink. We both work in the restaurant industry and left feeling like he thought we purposefully put the fly in our drink. We would have been happy to pay for it if we had only received an apology from the server since We both realize things happen. I am Sorry to say we won't be returning.

What a find! I have been completely unimpressed by breakfast places in Louisville. I'm desperate to like other brunch places, I really am. But I'm just never satisfied. Usually the ambiance is lovely, but the food just falls short. It is pretty much that way across the board. Oh, with the exception of the Fish House. That hit the spot. I didn't even know that Captain's Quarters had brunch. Took a nice bike ride out there, so my opinion on the food may be a bit jaded because I was in dire need of food by the time I reached the restaurant. However, there were so many options as part of the buffet. I can't exactly remember the price, but I know it was around $15, which is costly, but it is all-you-can-eat - so be prepared to eat. You can get an omelette cooked-to-order or a waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. You can have fried chicken and green beans. How about some sausage and roasted potatoes? Want fresh fruit? How about biscuits and gravy? No, not enough? Try some of the desert, I'd go for the pecan pie if I were you. Also, the patio would be a perfect place to spend eating brunch on a crisp fall morning.

CQ is always my go to place when I want to eat outside. It's such a beautiful setting, with plenty of places to sit outside. I usually go on the weekend, when they have a live band, which is always fun. I love that you can go sit by the water and enjoy a pre or post dinner drink. Word of caution, you will not get a seat outside unless you are willing to wait more than an hour. They do not take reservations for dinning in the outside area (they will take reservations for the inside area though). Also, I've ordered a mule there before and it came out in a pint glass...weird. I swear it doesn't taste as good unless it's out of a copper cup. But, all the other drinks were pretty good. The food is pretty good too. The BBQ nachos are so good. They are covered in cheese sauce, BBQ sauce, and yummy pork. They are not lacking in the meat department, that's for sure. Most of the other dishes we've tried (gyro, fries) was just ok. But, I think everyone goes for the view and drinks, not the food.

I'll start with the best part about Captain's Quarters... The atmosphere. Relaxed, fun, summery. Perched along the shore of the Ohio river, you have a spectacular water view from anywhere in the restaurant. Captain's Quarters' property is the most beautiful in Louisville. There's multiple sections of the restaurant: indoor and outdoor dining, indoor and outdoor bar areas, sitting areas in the grass by the river, etc. The outdoor deck is expansive with many different levels. Sitting here offers a view of the river that's hard to beat. This is the kind of place you want to hang around - and there's plenty of space to do so. You can walk down to the river, through the gardens, or find a chair to watch the sunset. It's impossible not to enjoy yourself in such a gorgeous space. This aspect alone gets 5+ stars. In such an amazing space, one would hope for food of equal greatness. Unfortunately, I haven't found that to be the case. I've dined here on countless occasions, and even had one of my bridal showers here. My experience with the food has been hit or miss. If you find something you like from the menu, I suggest you stick with it. Here are some tips based on my visits: You can't go wrong with the hot brown. It's the best thing on their menu. Not only that, it's one of the best hot browns I've had in the city. Other menu items that I've found to be pretty good include the spinach queso, green chili wontons, and buffalo chicken quesadilla. Average to good. Not great, but satisfying. On the other hand, the fried cod fish sandwich is bad. That's disappointing considering the seafood-vibe you get while at CQ. And food has to be pretty bad for me to classify it as "bad" - I usually give the benefit of the doubt and call it "average." But this fish sandwich is one of the worst I've had. The breading was thick and chewy. It tasted like it had been fried in old, dirty oil. The fish did not have the fresh, juicy flavor that I'm used to. To top it off, the tartar sauce wasn't good either, so you couldn't even smother away the bad taste of the fish. For me, a good tartar sauce is essential to compliment a fried fish sandwich. Overall, the whole dish was disappointing (hey, the fries were fine at least), and I would recommend you steer away from the fish sandwich. To summarize my food ratings: Hot brown - 5 stars. Cod sandwich - 1 star. The rest of the menu - 3 stars. I was tempted to give Captain's Quarters a 3 star review, based on the food. However, the wonderful atmosphere and stunning surroundings warrant a higher review. I'm definitely a fan of CQ. It's a great place to grab a drink, socialize, and enjoy the view.

I always love sitting outside with company on a nice afternoon/evening. This place has one of the best al fresco spots in the Louisville area. The views are amazing; river view, downtown skyline from a distance, pretty trees everywhere. If you have not been here to see it for yourself it is worth the drive out. River road is also a pretty drive in itself. Once you get there you can choose to sit inside, or out. Obviously if it is at all possible...sit outside. The outdoor bar is a big area and is seat yourself, so no worries on waiting for a table if you are cool with the bar area. They even have a nice circle of outdoor sofas and a table set up out there. Nice spot. The food is a basic mix of American fare that you are used to seeing at your average bar and grill. They have an array of drink choices, including a slushi type cocktail that they were serving the last time I was there. The staff was friendly and accommodating of our group and did not mind that we trickled in and ordered at different times. Beautiful spot for an event too! Weddings, work functions, etc.

I came to Captain's Quarters this summer it was a beautiful day we got great outdoor seating area but they only take reservations inside but not outside and had wonderful views also you saw people with their boats and you hear live music but one down side was our server we order and he didn't come out with it and he act like he did not like us. CQ is probably the best place to go too when you want to enjoy a nice drink outside on the river. A word to the wise, if that is what your looking for, the earlier you arrive the better your view, outdoor seating tends to fill fast. If I had to rate the restaurant on the view alone it would be a five, but the only reason it gets a four is that their really isn't anything memorable on their menu. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad by any means, it just doesn't really leave you craving more.

I have been a fan of Captain's Quarters location and atmosphere for a very long time but not always a huge fan of the food, until now. My husband and I have a boat and enjoy taking it out on the river and stopping by Captain;s Quarters for cocktails and/or dinner. We were out yesterday and hadn't had lunch or dinner- so we were hungry and ready to sit out on the deck and enjoy the sun while stuffing our face. The wind was blowing rather hard, so the water was choppy and the current was rough. When we pulled up to dock the boat, we were having a little bit of a problem as our boat is on the smaller side and the water was crashing into us non-stop. One of the guys working the docks gladly helped us find a calmer spot and tie our boat off safely. We were seated on the outside deck immediately and ordered wine and beer. Our server was a bit overwhelmed but she was nice and doing her best. The hubby ordered a Gyro sandwich and fries- which he loved so much that I didn't even get to try it. I had grilled shrimp tacos. Great flavor! Just enough spice and fresh cabbage on top to give it a refreshing crunch. Big portion too- there were 3 tacos for $14. I look forward to many more warm Summer evenings on the river. Next time I am ordered the big bucket of shrimp cocktail and a Miami Vice cocktail.

Went for lunch on a weekday and had to wait at hostess station for 15 before an employee arrived to greet us. They did not appear to be busy, so I have no idea what the problem was. When the hostess finally showed up, we were told there was a 25 minute wait for a table of two. When I questioned her because I could plainly see four open tables from where I was standing, she said she would check and left us standing there for another five minutes. Meanwhile, the line behind us had formed all the way out the parking lot. She then took us to a table in full sun. When I asked if we could have the one on the lower deck with an umbrella, she left AGAIN to go find out! As I started walking toward the table I was asking to sit at, a waiter passed by us and rudely told us we could absolutely not seat ourselves! By this time, I was ready to leave anyway, but the waitress finally showed up and said we could sit down!! So that process took 25 minutes on a not so busy weekday....WOW!! The fish sandwich was dry with no flavor, bad French fries, and boring flavorless cole slaw. I paid with a credit card and when the recipe came for signing, they had charged me double the price of the meal! Of course, the waitress had to redo the charge but did not apologize and acted like I was putting her out because I didn't want to pay double for the sandwich. I am giving this two stars for the weather, because it was a pretty day. Did not enjoy due to the hassles and bad food and will not come here again. We have way too many fine choices in this town where the food and service are as they should be. This place survives for one reason only...location on the river. I'll just go walk the bridge next time I want to see the river!

Unimpressed at today's experience. The peel and eat shrimp appetizer were small in size. Not the typical peel and eat. My entree an ahi tuna pasta salad had no sauce. There was a hit of flavor and I asked for more of the sauce. The waiter brought me siracha. I explained that is not the sauce. He then brought me soy sauce. I asked him to get the menu and read the description. Finally, once my party was finished eating I received a marmalade which I mixed with the soy. I was unimpressed that the pasta had no sauce and that neither the waiter or the cook staff knew what sauce the menu described. Non one other than the server checked on us. Typically a manager should stop by and ensure a good dining experience. I would have let them know I was underwhelmed. 2 stars is generous.

We arrived Saturday night at 6:00 to make sure we could gather enough seating at the outside bar area for 18 of my friends to join us for dinner and music. The band, food and service we received was the best we have had in a while. Our waitress could not have done anything better. She handled the whole evening truly like a pro. Captain's Quarters, like other restaurants I've eaten at with a view of the Ohio River, has bad food. I really can't communicate that fact more clearly than that. Their version of a Louisville Hot Brown is shameful. Every piece of bread is supposed to be toasted but the lazy cook at Captain's Quarters decided to cover one of the pieces of bread with about a half-pound of cheese thinking I wouldn't notice, but I noticed. It was the most pathetic attempt at a Hot Brown I've ever seen or tasted. I use the title of cook instead of chef for the person who is responsible for that mess because a chef could make a better hot brown blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back. The scenery is nice. But, if you want nice scenery and a meal better than what you would find at Captain's Quarters then drive through Taco Bell, Arby's, or grab a pizza at Little Caesars and throw a picnic blanket out on the shore of the Ohio and dig in.

Captain's Quarters is a mixed bag for me. The best thing about the restaurant is its extensive decks overlooking the Ohio River. It is wonderful to sit under an umbrella and watch the river and the watercraft. The food is somewhat overpriced, and the options are not particularly interesting. On this visit, I dined with two friends. One had the Captain's Combo (broiled) $22, one had Maryland Crab Cakes $18, and I ordered the Captain's Combo (fried) $22. The Captain's Combos came with two large shrimp, two pieces of cod, two sea scallops, French fries and coleslaw. The seafood was competently cooked, but nothing special. The fries and coleslaw were standard-issue restaurant supply items. The Maryland Crab Cakes were really nice. Large, with lots of lump crab. They were served with a spicy remoulade sauce (also nice), and a sweet potato hash that was good. The service was good. Our server was friendly and accommodating. The tab for three meals, two well drinks and an iced tea was $95 (including gratuity). On the way out, I noticed the Health Department rating hanging by the front door with a 'C' grade. A little disturbing since I have rarely seen a rating this low.

I stopped by Captain's Quarters on the suggestion of a couple of guys that I do some business with. We headed in for lunch. It was a little busy for a Friday, and they were already on a wait. We were given the option of sitting out on the massive outside deck near the bar, which we took. Captain's Quarters is huge. I was a little amazed by even the size of the parking lot. Inside, it's really a beautiful restaurant. We didn't spend very long inside, however, as we sat outside on the deck overlooking the river. It was a beautiful day to sit outside. The deck overlooks a lawn area that I am told is packed shoulder-to-shoulder for major events. There's also several boat slips where you can drive your boat up to the restaurant and they will page you when your table is ready (or you can just take it to go). The views are beautiful, the atmosphere is pretty laid back (at lunch), and it was a pleasure to sit out on the patio and watch life go by. Being a fan of waterfront restaurants, I really enjoyed this aspect. We waited for what seemed like a long time for our server, who was also the outside bartender. She appeared to be covering the bar and all the tables on the patio. That seemed to be a little too much for her to handle, as she was constantly apologizing for the delays during our meal. Several times I had to wait for a refill on my soda. It seems like a restaurant as large as Captain's Quarters could be better served having an extra pair of hands here during the lunch period. I had the fish sandwich, which was really tasty. It's two fried pieces of fish on a nice large bun with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and sauce. The fish was nicely breaded and very crisp. Inside, the fish was piping hot and fresh, still very juicy. The bun was nice and big, but didn't overpower the fish. It really is a huge sandwich. It came with chips and cole slaw as well. The chips were crisp and full of flavor... I couldn't stop eating them despite being full! If you look at price based solely on what you're brought on the plate, you'll be a little disappointed. But if you factor in the location, and the views, you'll see the value in it. The restaurant itself was clean and tidy. I really enjoyed the nautical theme. Fishing chairs at the bar, boating stuff as the decor around the outside bar. Lots of wood everywhere. It's very nicely done. This was almost a five-star review. Too bad the slow service killed it.

The place is down right enormous. I love that it gives you the feeling of escape in land locked Louisville and the dinner cruise is a rare find in our humble little city. It really makes you feel like you're in a sweet harbor town and the live music is pretty great. There is never a lack of liquid confident filled dancers on the patio which makes for great entertainment. I wish it appealed to a younger early 20s crowd, because I would be there everyday, but sadly, it doesn't. It is usually filled with 30s-50s folks. It is great for large groups of people, family dinners and I love that you can pull the boat right up and throw a rope around a cleat. Great way to end a day on the river!

I visited Captain's Quarters on Sept. 2nd with my fiance. We sat outside by the river. It was a beautiful day. The atmosphere was very pleasant. Service was fast and our waitress was kind and attentive. Our food and wine were excellent as well. I ordered the chicken, spinach and onion salad with nuts and light olive oil dressing-delicious!I really had a great time. The patio was tidy and the tables were equiped with large umbrellas to keep the hot sun off of the diners. I definitely reccomend this restaurant. It is lovely.

The quick overview: Captain's Quarters has made some great updates to its menu recently and is worth a visit. I can't believe it, but I'm a fan! Having eaten at Captain's Quarters in the past, I was lukewarm about it being a location for a dinner during extended family Christmas celebrations. I don't remember being impressed by the menu, and the only times I had gone to CQ in the past decade had been on weekend nights during the summer, when it turns into a club atmosphere. It is a great place to go dancing, but it was also a great place to gather in the winter. Side note to management: your menu on the website is a little outdated. I looked it up before we went to the restaurant and was hoping for the Tuna Tataki appetizer, which other Yelpers have added pictures of, but instead you just have the Tuna Tataki flatbread. There are a few other small updates as well. We had a big group (26+) and the service was really good considering the size. One plus to a group of that size is getting a taste of what other people have! My thoughts on what I tried are below: Appetizers Tuna Tataki Flatbread - tuna was fresh, but the idea of ahi on flatbread was weird. There wasn't anything to hold it all together (like melted cheese would be on a margherita flatbread), so I ended up with a bite of ahi tuna, then a few separate bites of flatbread. Not bad, but there are other good appetizers to try. Salmon Flatbread - salmon was good, but ditto what I said about it not being held together well. Not bad, but not my favorite. Green Chili Wontons - Yum! These have a great flavor without being too spicy. Highly recommended! Fried Banana Peppers - I love banana peppers and was not disappointed by these. The remoulade sauce on the side gives it a great extra tang. Highly recommended! Shrimp - fresh, with a good "pop" when you first bite into them. Highly recommended! Entrees Wasabi-Crusted Tuna - Slices of ahi tuna with a savory crust, artfully presented. It is not crusted in wasabi, but the wasabi is served on the side so you can choose your level of kick. Recommended! Ragin' Cajun - So delicious! Great creole spice in this dish. Recommended! Lobster and Shrimp Mac 'n Cheese - Rich, creamy comfort food dish. It's a large serving in a cast-iron skillet and could easily be shared. Recommended! Nobody had room for dessert :-) In summary, the new menu makes Captain's Quarters worth checking out. It seems to be ideal for large group gatherings and is a good gathering place for all seasons.

This is one of my favorite places in Mollbore been going ever since I was a little kid and it's fun for kids and adults you can sit outside and enjoy your time kids can run around and play on the grass afterwords or during your dinner and you don't have to worry about them. They also have great food. On Sunday they even have a buffet.

Captain's Quarters is evocative of fun people watching and great views and thus you'll never see me turn it down when asked to go. I really dig the atmosphere. That said, would I be as eager to go if it weren't for the big deck right on the river and the killer sunset to watch, etc. etc.? Probably not. The food is good but not GREAT, and over the years I haven't found it to be terribly consistent. I also have gotten drinks here that were watered down, and the server borderline argued with me when I insisted there wasn't enough alcohol in my gin and tonic. (For the record, this was the second time I've ever sent a drink back.) In any case, I always enjoy an evening at Captain's Quarters, and that is why it gets a tenuous four stars from me.

Yikes! What happened? This use to be one of the favorite places to eat when I was in town from Atlanta, but tonight all that changed. There was a 90 minute wait to eat outdoors, so we chose to eat inside. Our service was terrible. We received our food, but had no silverware to go with it. Even after being told someone would bring us silverware, no one every did. I had to go get some myself off another table. My food arrived incorrectly, but was tasty. Our server made various excuses for the service and the kitchen. Said they were always overwhelmed on Sundays. Note to self, don't go on Sundays. The rest room was also a mess. Toilet paper was everywhere! I hope the management makes the changes necessary to bring it back to the point it use to be.

CQ has always been a favorite of ours, and it just keeps getting better all the time. We are huge fans of outdoor seating, and CQ has that in spades! They have also upgraded the outdoor bar, where they often have live music...also something we love! Rest assured, however - the music is NOT overwhelming if you are sitting outside; just good ambiance. The food - awesome! We love the tuna appetizer. Last time we were there, they offered a swordfish special for $18.00 that was delicious. (Most entrees are a little more pricey, though they do offer sandwiches for less.) You really can't go wrong, no matter what you choose...

What happened to one of my favorite spots in town?! Ambience, the bar and the boat dock area have all stayed the same and that is something to be thankful for. However, the service - timeliness, professionalism and courtesy - are gone almost entirely. Had a friend in town and can't think of a better view than CQ. Our food took over one hour to come out and when it did, every single meal was cold. Cold fish is um, not the best. But we were starving so instead of remake it, we ate it. I appreciated that they didn't charge us for it, but my friends w cold meals on a separate check were charged full price for a meal that, by the time we left, took almost 3 hours. I get it, you have a following so you don't have to be the best any more. But truly, CQ, just a little training of your staff on how to look at someone when you are talking or not charging in front of a guest with a walker almost knocking them over (not in our party) would heavily compensate for the lack of quickness in the kitchen. Just all around -- do better -- you are a Louisville landmark and it would be nice for you to live up to it instead of coast on those laurels.

Food is only average and expensive for the low quality. The only obvious reason to eat here is to dine alfresco. Stick with the hamburgers or fish sandwich. Servers are friendly. The outdoor bar area is nice. Good for a late afternoon beer.

Fantastic situation on the river -- truly outstanding. The restaurant itself, however, is filthy. The service is lax and disinterested. And the food is absolutely atrocious -- perhaps as bad as it gets anywhere in Louisville. Go there for a drink on a beautiful evening, nothing more.

The best thing about CQ is the phenomenal outdoor deck over the river. If you've never been to CQ, go on a beautiful spring day for lunch or a pleasant summer evening with a cool breeze for dinner and sit outside. I've been to CQ 5 times and have never eaten indoors. Of course, the food is good though a bit pricey for the portion size (you're paying for the view). My favorite is their Bibb and Bleu Cheese Salad with grilled salmon (the salmon is optional).

OK, I keep going back because.....Menu choices? No, quality of food? no Service? no View? yes, atmosphere? yes. Captains Quarters has so much potential, yet the operators must just feel that their reputation as a great place to go and watch the Sunset is going to get them by. My wife and I are kinda new to area and were warned by ever single person who mentioned CQ that the view was great but the food and service is meh at best. We have now been there a 8-10 times and each time hoping for better food and service, I have just lowered my expectations before we go and then I'm not disappointed. Just like today. Example, Ordered drinks first which arrived timely, (ice tea) then after beckoning the very over stationed waitress we ordered our meal, BBQ Sandwich and Fish Sandwich. After 3 refills and an empty glass our food went wandering around the deck to several tables which did not recognize the order, the young man finally located us and served our food, training must have been ongoing because neither our delivery or any one else's went directly to a table, pretty humorous watching the young men trying to find the correct table. Next, we had no table service (forks and knives' and spoons oh my) Which we had to ask for, the young man went all the way to another part of the property to locate (training issue here) The food was served as advertised and was fresh from the kitchen. Waited a long time for our check. Bottom line, They have so much potential here that they are not tapping into, to bad. and training seems to an issue too. We will go back again with lowered expectations to watch the goings on at the river. Try sitting away from the outside bar, perhaps the wait staff is better trained in the main serving areas.

CQ has really, really gone downhill in the past couple years. True, the atmosphere is outstanding - beautiful location on the Ohio River with plenty of outdoor seating. The food does not do the surroundings justice, however. First, we got serious attitude from the hostess stand when we asked to switch our reservation to outside seating when I'd been told when I made the reservation that we could do so. We were told it would take an hour to accommodate us - yet on a Monday afternoon, there was a TON of outdoor seating available. So, we ate inside. Then, in my entire party of more than 10 people, not a single one of us would have rated our entrees better than mediocre. Veggie sandwich was more stale bun than vegetables and sans the goat cheese that was to accompany it; fish tacos were deemed by both in my party that had it as, "worst fish tacos they'd ever eaten;" onion rings were chewy; need I go on? A gratuity was added to the check, which would be fine for a large party IF they had told us they were doing so. If you choose to go for the atmosphere, stick with appetizers, as those were decent (but be warned: cocktails are super watered down). Better yet, pack a picnic and head to Cox's Park. Your view of the river will be comparable and the food far superior. Such a disappointment - CQ is cutting corners and it shows!

I'd always heard great things about C.Q.(from my boyfriend) Visiting from Ca. I suggested we go for a sunset ( the view is outstanding). My 4 star rating is contingent on the fact you realize that this restaurant is not Michelin guide, "haute-cuisine" but is a perfect counterpoint to "The Ri-vue"(Galt House, also on the river) @ one quarter the price-(hence the name)-lol. We ordered the hummus platter( generously served w/ pita, bruschetta, and cucumber dill dip) Fantastic Tuna tataki, which is as close to raw fish as this place gets, then we split the fish tacos, grilled, not fried, thank you! An entirely acceptable bottle of Australian red, promoted by our server, great taste without the aftertaste of exhorbitant markup! If your idea of a good time is a superb river view surrounded by folks with down home sensibilities or the occasional high elbowed birthday party, or shower, or whatever, this place is a can't miss on our list!

The atmosphere is great here. Tons of outside seating and frequent live music. Sunday nights are always hopping outside. They have Rogue Dead Guy Ale on tap. Great stuff if you have never had it. They have a great refreshing lunch dish of chicken salad in a pineapple boat. Very good. I had the Demer Fettucini recently and it was outstanding. Tasty and light. Perfect for summer.

Went to this restaurant today for the first time and it was really neat. The location was actually for an event I had to do for brand ambassadoring, but the owner was friendly to my team and I, as we were setting up our event (usually businesses kick us out for promoting anything). Anyway, the atmosphere was great (restaurant overlooks a boat harbor on both sides that, in turn, comes from the Ohio River. Owner gave us food on the house since we were working the event. I got the appetizer wings, Jamaican Jerk flavor, and it was pretty good. I think only buffalo wild wings beats them. No one can make it like Buffalo Wild Wings!!

Just like other people mentioned this restaurant has mediocre food but an amazing view. If the restaurant was anywhere else it would not last. I ordered a salad and the lettuce was very old, withering and brown. The server was useless as she didn't know anything about the menu or it's past items. Wouldn't really come here or recommend it for the food or service but maybe the view.

Party of 6 for dinner. Couldn't tell that they had 2 feet of water throughout the building back in March. The environment inside was pleasant and not too noisy. I had chicken and waffles which had good flavor but the chicken was over cooked. My wife had the salmon po-boy which also had good flavor. The menu did not have a large selection in my opinion. I had key lime pie for desert and my wife had derby pie with bourbon ice cream - both were the highlight of the meal. Service was great and prices were reasonable

I went to a Baby Shower here, and it was very nice. We were in a smaller room that fit about 30 people. They served fried chicken, shredded bbq sandwiches (awesome!), pasta salad, potato salad, green beans, and several other side dishes. The food was pretty good, and the server was attentive (he kept up with clearing plates and filling drinks through the whole event). Overall, it was a very nice setting, and the food/service were good.

Excellent options for private parties. I have hosted many on the boat (the CQ Princess), the Veranda & one of my favorite spaces, the Stone Room. Love having Bourbon, BBQ & Bluegrass events overlooking the Ohio River. No one ever wants to leave in this type of setting. Quests get to experience Southern hospitality at it's best! Very impressive. I like to think that with all of my travels and my passion for any eatery on the water, I was thoroughly impressed with the architecture of this place. Unfortuanately we had dinner elsewhere so I cannot comment on the food but the atmosphere was outstanding and the view was perfect. I have been to a lot of crab shacks on many marinas and by rivers and ocean beaches and inlets around New England, SC, FL, Indiana, Ohio, Biloxi, NOLA,Texas, all over Cali, Oregon and Washington State but this place is still at the top of my list. Truly a hidden gem that I would not have found on Google because it is not downtown.

You won't be getting a culinary epiphany here but what you'll get is a spectacular view of the river and amazing outside seating (if you don't mind waiting for it). The food is good but on the pricy side. The steak is very large, topped with beautifully colored carrots, white baby onions and no A1 sauce needed! The small filet of Seabass artfully sits on top of quinoa salad but tastes a bit fishy to me (not a sign of freshness). I love the sides that accompany the Mahi Mahi but the fish itself is a bit overcooked. Both fish dishes are not worth the 20 something price tags. The Ceviche is lacking and the clam chowder is decent but not spectacular. I come here mostly for the atmosphere. The boats/yachts dock here for dinner/lunch, the sun sets directly in front of you, lawn chairs in the manicured lawn provide closeness to the river that not many other restaurants in town can provide. If you want to enjoy the restaurant for cheap, they now got a small food stand that sells hot dogs, burgers, etc. and drinks for under $5. Sit down at one of the law chairs or benches by the lawn to enjoy your fares. The river will sparkle and the warm summer breezes will sooth your soul.

Excellent location on the Ohio river. This place looks and IS huge! When you drive in and see the parking lot, you'll wonder how all these people fit here. Prob a good idea to get reservations? We arrived late around 9pm for dinner so no problem getting a table. I had the Kentucky Hot Brown which I've never had since I'm not from KY.. it was good! The rest of my group liked their food so-so. The Shrimp and grits were singled out as mediocre. We also ordered some cocktails... which were served in plastic cups!! Can you imagine? They couldn't wash some glass cups?? Anyway.. good place for the location and view of the river.

Really cool and large outdoor patio/bar on the Ohio river (I didn't experience the restaurant but it looked great). Pull your boat up, dock (free) and enjoy. Sports on the tv's, wide selection and good service. I was concerned with a review that said the health code rating was a C today it was an A. Gulf coast boiled shrimp were great and came peeled.

I wish there were an option for zero stars! My first and last visit to this place was by far the worst restaurant experience in my life. Our party of 6 "called ahead" for 7:00. When we arrived at 7:00, the hostesses told us that it would be a 2 hour wait. Refusing to accept this, we checked with them again and they said that "it shouldn't be too long". Forty five minutes later, they told us that it should be 20-25 minutes. 20-25 minutes later, I begged them for any table and they finally seated us 10 minutes later. When we were finally seated, our waitress was not very attentive. I poured my own glass of water. Our appetizer took 20 mins to arrive and our food came out an hour after we sat down. That being said, the ambiance is nice. The view of the river is relaxing. Just be prepared to wait and test your patience!

Place transforms itself throughout the day. Early part is elderly types taking in their 3:30 dinner. Then is the after work crowd, followed by the twenty and thirty something who close the place.

Heard a lot about this restaurant and was excited to try. I went with a friend recently and curt was our server. I ordered the ribeye medium rare and it arrived medium if I am being nice. I hate complaining at restaurants so I ate my ribeye regardless. My friend found a dead fly halfway through her meal which was very disgusting to both of us. When we informed the server he didn't even apologize and we left having to pay for the drink. We both work in the restaurant industry and left feeling like he thought we purposefully put the fly in our drink. We would have been happy to pay for it if we had only received an apology from the server since We both realize things happen. I am Sorry to say we won't be returning.

What a find! I have been completely unimpressed by breakfast places in Louisville. I'm desperate to like other brunch places, I really am. But I'm just never satisfied. Usually the ambiance is lovely, but the food just falls short. It is pretty much that way across the board. Oh, with the exception of the Fish House. That hit the spot. I didn't even know that Captain's Quarters had brunch. Took a nice bike ride out there, so my opinion on the food may be a bit jaded because I was in dire need of food by the time I reached the restaurant. However, there were so many options as part of the buffet. I can't exactly remember the price, but I know it was around $15, which is costly, but it is all-you-can-eat - so be prepared to eat. You can get an omelette cooked-to-order or a waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. You can have fried chicken and green beans. How about some sausage and roasted potatoes? Want fresh fruit? How about biscuits and gravy? No, not enough? Try some of the desert, I'd go for the pecan pie if I were you. Also, the patio would be a perfect place to spend eating brunch on a crisp fall morning.

Couple of misses tonight. Bruce's Rajun Cajun pasta dish had to be remade as first round was missing some key ingredients. CQ is always my go to place when I want to eat outside. It's such a beautiful setting, with plenty of places to sit outside. I usually go on the weekend, when they have a live band, which is always fun. I love that you can go sit by the water and enjoy a pre or post dinner drink. Word of caution, you will not get a seat outside unless you are willing to wait more than an hour. They do not take reservations for dinning in the outside area (they will take reservations for the inside area though). Also, I've ordered a mule there before and it came out in a pint glass...weird. I swear it doesn't taste as good unless it's out of a copper cup. But, all the other drinks were pretty good. The food is pretty good too. The BBQ nachos are so good. They are covered in cheese sauce, BBQ sauce, and yummy pork. They are not lacking in the meat department, that's for sure. Most of the other dishes we've tried (gyro, fries) was just ok. But, I think everyone goes for the view and drinks, not the food.

I'll start with the best part about Captain's Quarters... The atmosphere. Relaxed, fun, summery. Perched along the shore of the Ohio river, you have a spectacular water view from anywhere in the restaurant. Captain's Quarters' property is the most beautiful in Louisville. There's multiple sections of the restaurant: indoor and outdoor dining, indoor and outdoor bar areas, sitting areas in the grass by the river, etc. The outdoor deck is expansive with many different levels. Sitting here offers a view of the river that's hard to beat. This is the kind of place you want to hang around - and there's plenty of space to do so. You can walk down to the river, through the gardens, or find a chair to watch the sunset. It's impossible not to enjoy yourself in such a gorgeous space. This aspect alone gets 5+ stars. In such an amazing space, one would hope for food of equal greatness. Unfortunately, I haven't found that to be the case. I've dined here on countless occasions, and even had one of my bridal showers here. My experience with the food has been hit or miss. If you find something you like from the menu, I suggest you stick with it. Here are some tips based on my visits: You can't go wrong with the hot brown. It's the best thing on their menu. Not only that, it's one of the best hot browns I've had in the city. Other menu items that I've found to be pretty good include the spinach queso, green chili wontons, and buffalo chicken quesadilla. Average to good. Not great, but satisfying. On the other hand, the fried cod fish sandwich is bad. That's disappointing considering the seafood-vibe you get while at CQ. And food has to be pretty bad for me to classify it as "bad" - I usually give the benefit of the doubt and call it "average." But this fish sandwich is one of the worst I've had. The breading was thick and chewy. It tasted like it had been fried in old, dirty oil. The fish did not have the fresh, juicy flavor that I'm used to. To top it off, the tartar sauce wasn't good either, so you couldn't even smother away the bad taste of the fish. For me, a good tartar sauce is essential to compliment a fried fish sandwich. Overall, the whole dish was disappointing (hey, the fries were fine at least), and I would recommend you steer away from the fish sandwich. To summarize my food ratings: Hot brown - 5 stars. Cod sandwich - 1 star. The rest of the menu - 3 stars. I was tempted to give Captain's Quarters a 3 star review, based on the food. However, the wonderful atmosphere and stunning surroundings warrant a higher review. I'm definitely a fan of CQ. It's a great place to grab a drink, socialize, and enjoy the view.

I always love sitting outside with company on a nice afternoon/evening. This place has one of the best al fresco spots in the Louisville area. The views are amazing; river view, downtown skyline from a distance, pretty trees everywhere. If you have not been here to see it for yourself it is worth the drive out. River road is also a pretty drive in itself. Once you get there you can choose to sit inside, or out. Obviously if it is at all possible...sit outside. The outdoor bar is a big area and is seat yourself, so no worries on waiting for a table if you are cool with the bar area. They even have a nice circle of outdoor sofas and a table set up out there. Nice spot. The food is a basic mix of American fare that you are used to seeing at your average bar and grill. They have an array of drink choices, including a slushi type cocktail that they were serving the last time I was there. The staff was friendly and accommodating of our group and did not mind that we trickled in and ordered at different times. Beautiful spot for an event too! Weddings, work functions, etc.

For years, I've taken my visitors here to sit on the lawn, watch the locals return to the marina from a day out on the Ohio River, and have pre-dinner drinks. It feels just the way I'd imagine my fantasy backyard might fill up gradually with friends. Nowadays, as the sun sets, and the band starts to play, the new improved menu keeps me there for dinner as well!

The deck and the view are top-notch, A-1. The food is decent. I had the fish tacos which were alright but had about 3x as much cabbage as was necessary. The service was meh...fairly inattentive, but not utterly atrocious. I really liked the entertainment (guitarist/singer). And really...the view at sunset is unbelievable.

I came to Captain's Quarters this summer it was a beautiful day we got great outdoor seating area but they only take reservations inside but not outside and had wonderful views also you saw people with their boats and you hear live music but one down side was our server we order and he didn't come out with it and he act like he did not like us. I got the Scottish salmon it was ok, i really love the atmosphere they had it's good for groups of people i'll just say overall it's it's the place to go when it's nice weather and if you wanna great place to dine out by the lake.

CQ is probably the best place to go too when you want to enjoy a nice drink outside on the river. A word to the wise, if that is what your looking for, the earlier you arrive the better your view, outdoor seating tends to fill fast. If I had to rate the restaurant on the view alone it would be a five, but the only reason it gets a four is that their really isn't anything memorable on their menu. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad by any means, it just doesn't really leave you craving more.

I have been a fan of Captain's Quarters location and atmosphere for a very long time but not always a huge fan of the food, until now. My husband and I have a boat and enjoy taking it out on the river and stopping by Captain;s Quarters for cocktails and/or dinner. We were out yesterday and hadn't had lunch or dinner- so we were hungry and ready to sit out on the deck and enjoy the sun while stuffing our face. The wind was blowing rather hard, so the water was choppy and the current was rough. When we pulled up to dock the boat, we were having a little bit of a problem as our boat is on the smaller side and the water was crashing into us non-stop. One of the guys working the docks gladly helped us find a calmer spot and tie our boat off safely. We were seated on the outside deck immediately and ordered wine and beer. Our server was a bit overwhelmed but she was nice and doing her best. The hubby ordered a Gyro sandwich and fries- which he loved so much that I didn't even get to try it. I had grilled shrimp tacos. Great flavor! Just enough spice and fresh cabbage on top to give it a refreshing crunch. Big portion too- there were 3 tacos for $14. I look forward to many more warm Summer evenings on the river. Next time I am ordered the big bucket of shrimp cocktail and a Miami Vice cocktail.

Went for lunch on a weekday and had to wait at hostess station for 15 before an employee arrived to greet us. They did not appear to be busy, so I have no idea what the problem was. When the hostess finally showed up, we were told there was a 25 minute wait for a table of two. When I questioned her because I could plainly see four open tables from where I was standing, she said she would check and left us standing there for another five minutes. Meanwhile, the line behind us had formed all the way out the parking lot. She then took us to a table in full sun. When I asked if we could have the one on the lower deck with an umbrella, she left AGAIN to go find out! As I started walking toward the table I was asking to sit at, a waiter passed by us and rudely told us we could absolutely not seat ourselves! By this time, I was ready to leave anyway, but the waitress finally showed up and said we could sit down!! So that process took 25 minutes on a not so busy weekday....WOW!! The fish sandwich was dry with no flavor, bad French fries, and boring flavorless cole slaw. I paid with a credit card and when the recipe came for signing, they had charged me double the price of the meal! Of course, the waitress had to redo the charge but did not apologize and acted like I was putting her out because I didn't want to pay double for the sandwich. I am giving this two stars for the weather, because it was a pretty day. Did not enjoy due to the hassles and bad food and will not come here again. We have way too many fine choices in this town where the food and service are as they should be. This place survives for one reason only...location on the river. I'll just go walk the bridge next time I want to see the river!

Unimpressed at today's experience. The peel and eat shrimp appetizer were small in size. Not the typical peel and eat. My entree an ahi tuna pasta salad had no sauce. There was a hit of flavor and I asked for more of the sauce. The waiter brought me siracha. I explained that is not the sauce. He then brought me soy sauce. I asked him to get the menu and read the description. Finally, once my party was finished eating I received a marmalade which I mixed with the soy. I was unimpressed that the pasta had no sauce and that neither the waiter or the cook staff knew what sauce the menu described. Non one other than the server checked on us. Typically a manager should stop by and ensure a good dining experience. I would have let them know I was underwhelmed. 2 stars is generous.

We arrived Saturday night at 6:00 to make sure we could gather enough seating at the outside bar area for 18 of my friends to join us for dinner and music. The band, food and service we received was the best we have had in a while. Our waitress could not have done anything better. She handled the whole evening truly like a pro. I mentioned to her at the end of the night that she did an awesome job keeping everything straight. I only wish I would have asked her for her name. She is a keeper!

The atmosphere was great with the surroundings and people watching! We had a 2 hour wait before we got our food and it was ok, but nothing special. Glad the sights and the drinks were good! Prices were ok, but too high for the wait.

Captain's Quarters, like other restaurants I've eaten at with a view of the Ohio River, has bad food. I really can't communicate that fact more clearly than that. Their version of a Louisville Hot Brown is shameful. Every piece of bread is supposed to be toasted but the lazy cook at Captain's Quarters decided to cover one of the pieces of bread with about a half-pound of cheese thinking I wouldn't notice, but I noticed. It was the most pathetic attempt at a Hot Brown I've ever seen or tasted. I use the title of cook instead of chef for the person who is responsible for that mess because a chef could make a better hot brown blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back. The scenery is nice. But, if you want nice scenery and a meal better than what you would find at Captain's Quarters then drive through Taco Bell, Arby's, or grab a pizza at Little Caesars and throw a picnic blanket out on the shore of the Ohio and dig in.

Captain's Quarters is a mixed bag for me. The best thing about the restaurant is its extensive decks overlooking the Ohio River. It is wonderful to sit under an umbrella and watch the river and the watercraft. The food is somewhat overpriced, and the options are not particularly interesting. On this visit, I dined with two friends. One had the Captain's Combo (broiled) $22, one had Maryland Crab Cakes $18, and I ordered the Captain's Combo (fried) $22. The Captain's Combos came with two large shrimp, two pieces of cod, two sea scallops, French fries and coleslaw. The seafood was competently cooked, but nothing special. The fries and coleslaw were standard-issue restaurant supply items. The Maryland Crab Cakes were really nice. Large, with lots of lump crab. They were served with a spicy remoulade sauce (also nice), and a sweet potato hash that was good. The service was good. Our server was friendly and accommodating. The tab for three meals, two well drinks and an iced tea was $95 (including gratuity). On the way out, I noticed the Health Department rating hanging by the front door with a 'C' grade. A little disturbing since I have rarely seen a rating this low.

I stopped by Captain's Quarters on the suggestion of a couple of guys that I do some business with. We headed in for lunch. It was a little busy for a Friday, and they were already on a wait. We were given the option of sitting out on the massive outside deck near the bar, which we took. Captain's Quarters is huge. I was a little amazed by even the size of the parking lot. Inside, it's really a beautiful restaurant. We didn't spend very long inside, however, as we sat outside on the deck overlooking the river. It was a beautiful day to sit outside. The deck overlooks a lawn area that I am told is packed shoulder-to-shoulder for major events. There's also several boat slips where you can drive your boat up to the restaurant and they will page you when your table is ready (or you can just take it to go). The views are beautiful, the atmosphere is pretty laid back (at lunch), and it was a pleasure to sit out on the patio and watch life go by. Being a fan of waterfront restaurants, I really enjoyed this aspect. We waited for what seemed like a long time for our server, who was also the outside bartender. She appeared to be covering the bar and all the tables on the patio. That seemed to be a little too much for her to handle, as she was constantly apologizing for the delays during our meal. Several times I had to wait for a refill on my soda. It seems like a restaurant as large as Captain's Quarters could be better served having an extra pair of hands here during the lunch period. I had the fish sandwich, which was really tasty. It's two fried pieces of fish on a nice large bun with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and sauce. The fish was nicely breaded and very crisp. Inside, the fish was piping hot and fresh, still very juicy. The bun was nice and big, but didn't overpower the fish. It really is a huge sandwich. It came with chips and cole slaw as well. The chips were crisp and full of flavor... I couldn't stop eating them despite being full! If you look at price based solely on what you're brought on the plate, you'll be a little disappointed. But if you factor in the location, and the views, you'll see the value in it. The restaurant itself was clean and tidy. I really enjoyed the nautical theme. Fishing chairs at the bar, boating stuff as the decor around the outside bar. Lots of wood everywhere. It's very nicely done. This was almost a five-star review. Too bad the slow service killed it.

The place is down right enormous. I love that it gives you the feeling of escape in land locked Louisville and the dinner cruise is a rare find in our humble little city. It really makes you feel like you're in a sweet harbor town and the live music is pretty great. There is never a lack of liquid confident filled dancers on the patio which makes for great entertainment. I wish it appealed to a younger early 20s crowd, because I would be there everyday, but sadly, it doesn't. It is usually filled with 30s-50s folks. It is great for large groups of people, family dinners and I love that you can pull the boat right up and throw a rope around a cleat. Great way to end a day on the river!

I visited Captain's Quarters on Sept. 2nd with my fiance. We sat outside by the river. It was a beautiful day. The atmosphere was very pleasant. Service was fast and our waitress was kind and attentive. Our food and wine were excellent as well. I ordered the chicken, spinach and onion salad with nuts and light olive oil dressing-delicious!I really had a great time. The patio was tidy and the tables were equiped with large umbrellas to keep the hot sun off of the diners. I definitely reccomend this restaurant. It is lovely.

The quick overview: Captain's Quarters has made some great updates to its menu recently and is worth a visit. I can't believe it, but I'm a fan! Having eaten at Captain's Quarters in the past, I was lukewarm about it being a location for a dinner during extended family Christmas celebrations. I don't remember being impressed by the menu, and the only times I had gone to CQ in the past decade had been on weekend nights during the summer, when it turns into a club atmosphere. It is a great place to go dancing, but it was also a great place to gather in the winter. Side note to management: your menu on the website is a little outdated. I looked it up before we went to the restaurant and was hoping for the Tuna Tataki appetizer, which other Yelpers have added pictures of, but instead you just have the Tuna Tataki flatbread. There are a few other small updates as well. We had a big group (26+) and the service was really good considering the size. One plus to a group of that size is getting a taste of what other people have! My thoughts on what I tried are below: Appetizers Tuna Tataki Flatbread - tuna was fresh, but the idea of ahi on flatbread was weird. There wasn't anything to hold it all together (like melted cheese would be on a margherita flatbread), so I ended up with a bite of ahi tuna, then a few separate bites of flatbread. Not bad, but there are other good appetizers to try. Salmon Flatbread - salmon was good, but ditto what I said about it not being held together well. Not bad, but not my favorite. Green Chili Wontons - Yum! These have a great flavor without being too spicy. Highly recommended! Fried Banana Peppers - I love banana peppers and was not disappointed by these. The remoulade sauce on the side gives it a great extra tang. Highly recommended! Shrimp - fresh, with a good "pop" when you first bite into them. Highly recommended! Entrees Wasabi-Crusted Tuna - Slices of ahi tuna with a savory crust, artfully presented. It is not crusted in wasabi, but the wasabi is served on the side so you can choose your level of kick. Recommended! Ragin' Cajun - So delicious! Great creole spice in this dish. Recommended! Lobster and Shrimp Mac 'n Cheese - Rich, creamy comfort food dish. It's a large serving in a cast-iron skillet and could easily be shared. Recommended! Nobody had room for dessert :-) In summary, the new menu makes Captain's Quarters worth checking out. It seems to be ideal for large group gatherings and is a good gathering place for all seasons.

Great view, breeze from the water is a bit chilly but worth it. Food was good. Had the bbq shrimp and grits. It was very good maybe a little over spiced but still good. My wife had the hot brown and it was very good too. Great resturant! Great atmosphere.

This is one of my favorite places in Mollbore been going ever since I was a little kid and it's fun for kids and adults you can sit outside and enjoy your time kids can run around and play on the grass afterwords or during your dinner and you don't have to worry about them. They also have great food. On Sunday they even have a buffet.

Captain's Quarters is evocative of fun people watching and great views and thus you'll never see me turn it down when asked to go. I really dig the atmosphere. That said, would I be as eager to go if it weren't for the big deck right on the river and the killer sunset to watch, etc. etc.? Probably not. The food is good but not GREAT, and over the years I haven't found it to be terribly consistent. I also have gotten drinks here that were watered down, and the server borderline argued with me when I insisted there wasn't enough alcohol in my gin and tonic. (For the record, this was the second time I've ever sent a drink back.) In any case, I always enjoy an evening at Captain's Quarters, and that is why it gets a tenuous four stars from me.

Yikes! What happened? This use to be one of the favorite places to eat when I was in town from Atlanta, but tonight all that changed. There was a 90 minute wait to eat outdoors, so we chose to eat inside. Our service was terrible. We received our food, but had no silverware to go with it. Even after being told someone would bring us silverware, no one every did. I had to go get some myself off another table. My food arrived incorrectly, but was tasty. Our server made various excuses for the service and the kitchen. Said they were always overwhelmed on Sundays. Note to self, don't go on Sundays. The rest room was also a mess. Toilet paper was everywhere! I hope the management makes the changes necessary to bring it back to the point it use to be.

CQ has always been a favorite of ours, and it just keeps getting better all the time. We are huge fans of outdoor seating, and CQ has that in spades! They have also upgraded the outdoor bar, where they often have live music...also something we love! Rest assured, however - the music is NOT overwhelming if you are sitting outside; just good ambiance. The food - awesome! We love the tuna appetizer. Last time we were there, they offered a swordfish special for $18.00 that was delicious. (Most entrees are a little more pricey, though they do offer sandwiches for less.) You really can't go wrong, no matter what you choose...

What happened to one of my favorite spots in town?! Ambience, the bar and the boat dock area have all stayed the same and that is something to be thankful for. However, the service - timeliness, professionalism and courtesy - are gone almost entirely. Had a friend in town and can't think of a better view than CQ. Our food took over one hour to come out and when it did, every single meal was cold. Cold fish is um, not the best. But we were starving so instead of remake it, we ate it. I appreciated that they didn't charge us for it, but my friends w cold meals on a separate check were charged full price for a meal that, by the time we left, took almost 3 hours. I get it, you have a following so you don't have to be the best any more. But truly, CQ, just a little training of your staff on how to look at someone when you are talking or not charging in front of a guest with a walker almost knocking them over (not in our party) would heavily compensate for the lack of quickness in the kitchen. Just all around -- do better -- you are a Louisville landmark and it would be nice for you to live up to it instead of coast on those laurels.

Food is only average and expensive for the low quality. The only obvious reason to eat here is to dine alfresco. Stick with the hamburgers or fish sandwich. Servers are friendly. The outdoor bar area is nice. Good for a late afternoon beer.

Fantastic situation on the river -- truly outstanding. The restaurant itself, however, is filthy. The service is lax and disinterested. And the food is absolutely atrocious -- perhaps as bad as it gets anywhere in Louisville. Go there for a drink on a beautiful evening, nothing more.
