Was looking for a place to eat when I saw their sign. Since I'm a good southern boy from NC & love to try BBQ wherever I go, I pulled in. When I opened the door I was greeted by the wonderful smell of smoking meat! I ordered a rib plate and got a pulled pork sandwich on the side. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious and the pulled pork was equally tasty. Will definitely stop back in when I pass back through the area!

If I wanted to describe Backwoods BBQ in one word it would 'mediocre'. When I visit a BBQ place for the first time I usually get the pulled pork and fries or baked beans. The pork was OK nothing special, and the bread it was between was plain and smashed down white bread. The sauce seems like it could've been store bought, just like the baked beans. Normally a BBQ place will add their own touch to the beans, but these beans were bland. As for fries... there aren't any! You can get a bag of chips, but who really wants that? Overall I was pretty disappointed, and I won't be going back. On a positive note, the service was friendly, but even so, I'll pass on Backwoods.

As a BBQ lover I was highly disappointed at our experience here. Even though the place was not to close for another hour when we walked in we were treated as if we popped in 5 minutes before closing. The waitress was nice but she seemed distracted, even though there were only two other people in the restaurant. The food----ugh! My pork sandwich was a sad excuse for pulled pork, the BBQ I tried to salvage the pork with actually made it worst. The worst part of it all was my son ordered a hot dog and when it came out it was GREEN. Not just a little tinge of green like it sat a little too long, like GREEN as if they made it at 9am the previous day and it sat in lukewarm water for 2 days. To give them the benefit of doubt I tasted it and it was absolutely repulsive. When I presented my concern to the waitress she said "we just made it FRESH" No mam', there is no way this GREEN hot dog is fresh. I think we then ordered him a grilled cheese instead and nothing else was said about the disgusting hot dog. No apology, just a said excuse that it WAS fresh. Never ever again.

BBQ is good! Staff is friendly! My only problem would be that the building is a bit run down...

I can't attest to their food, as I went in and jut bought a whole buncha sauce for a friend and myself, but the customer service was fantastic. The whole place smells wonderful and when I walked in the person in front of me ordered 35 LBS of pork with sauce, SO, that must be good! The place was clean and neat. Being from out of town, I had a bunch of questions and they were patient despite the waiting line behind me. I ended up just getting 4 bottles of their finishing sauce. Parking is a bitch though. Getting in and out is difficult at best. Small parking up front.

Loved the food. Best BBQ! Friendly nice Wish I could eat there again Unfortunately I live in California Thank you for a wonderful meal

We love BBQ and were greatly looking forward to this new culinary adventure. Upon arrival, the shabby building took me back some; we even questioned if it was open. Then 2 other patrons left. We went in and were greeted by a waitress right away who sat us. We both ordered pulled pork sandwiches, my husband trying a side of hashbrown casserole, and I stuck with chips. The food was served quickly. However this pitiful bun and minuscule quantity of pulled pork posing for a sandwich, which looked like it had been flattened with a clothes iron, arrived. What a disappointment. The BBQ sauce was very runny, but had a kick to it. The portions were small and the quality left much to be desired . 2 hours later, I started to feel slightly ill and with an upset stomach. I doubt food poisoning, but definitely did not sit well. Needless to say, we will not be returning, nor do we recommend.

One of the first things I saw after moving to Paducah was a sign that read, Mutton Monday. I was intrigued. As I patiently waited for the next Monday. I pestered my wife with how excited I was about this. You see, where I moved from people don't eat mutton. If they do it is a lamb chop and not served in any restaurants and certainly not barbecue. Well Monday came and off we went to backwoods. So me and my wife both had the mutton plate. (she got it because I told her she could not try mine). At first I found it a little dry but flavorful. But when I added a little sauce. I really came to life. I first tried the hot sauce. I was good dont get me wrong It was not great. Then I tried the Normal sauce. It was also good But a little sweet for my taste. But when blended about 1 part normal to 2 parts hot it was fantastic. As for side I had just the slaw. Which was pretty good. Nice and crisp. Next time I might try the hash brown casserole or the beans. With how good the lamb was I look forward to trying their pork or what ever they are willing to cook up.

We planned on eating here on our trip from Sycamore, IL to Disney World, and it was worth the wait! The ribs were so tender and delicious, the sweet tea was a warm welcome to the south and the pecan pie was great! I would highly recommend it.
(5)Trace S.
Fantastic BBQ just as good as any other paducah BBQ. Fall off the bone ribs, tender pork and good sides. Never a crowd and the food is fantastic. Eating in is a pretty simple and rustic, but you still get great food.

As a traveler from saint paul I enjoy me some bbq when in in more Southern States. This page fits the bill for lunch. Backwoods has good service and good food for a bargain price. Last visit I had a puked pork sandwich and hashbrown casserole, which handsomely did the job for me. I will be visiting again on my next trip.

A member of the waitstaff greeted us with the typical southern smile (I absolutely love that) and told us to just sit wherever we wanted; she came right over and I had a bottle of beer in under 60 seconds after walking through the door. The menu was small and to the point filled with everything you'd ever need. I ordered the half slab of ribs will pulled pork on the side, hash brown casserole and slaw. Everything was perfect, nothing was less than spot on. My meal was finished out with a warm slice of pecan pie and ice cream and we left with a bill for under $50.00 for three guys. We have people in Wisconsin who slow cook meat products over low heat and smoke for hours on end, we do not however have anyone that can do BBQ. Whenever I travel down south I always hit the local BBQ joints recommended by the locals and in my opinion Backwoods is where to go when in Padacuh.

Really delish potato casserole! Homemade potato salad served icy-cold (a good thing!). Unfortunately the ribs we ordered were burnt well done. The meat we did get off the bone was tasty. Pulled pork portion bountiful, but on the dry side. Absolutely perfect sweet tea. Great sauce--vinegary with a hot tail!
(2)Keith H.
Be warned! Went an hour before closing on a Sat night. Not crowded at all. Was told, "Take out orders only". Ended up at a chain restaurant again.
(1)Teri D.
The people were very nice, but the rub they use is hideously over salted and I used their sauce, something I never do to smoked BBQ because the flavor is in the meat, not the sauce. By the way their "mild" sauce was as hot as Tabasco and I'm afraid to try the hot sauce, I'm not sure it's not nuclear waste. If they had some smoke flavor in the meat and backed off the salt in the rub, they would have great ribs. The ribs were very tender, but lacked smoked flavor and the cook didn't slice the into individual ribs as I had requested, making them difficult to eat in the car on my two hour drive home and I specifically told them I needed them cut up for this reason. I wouldn't go here again because although the sauce made them edible, without it, they were flavorless and way way way too salty.
(2)Tina W.
We stumbled onto Backwoods and were we ever glad we did! The chili was terrific--meaty, spicy. The pork sandwiches are served either on a bun or on bread. Your choice. The hashbrown casserole was like cracker barrel. It was good. The beans were fantastic. Just a hint of heat to them. It was really cheap. We will be back!

The only reason I go to Paducah Kentucky is to visit my 97 year old grandmother in the "Land of Lincoln" on the other side of the Ohio. But when I'm there I make my obligatory artery-clogging stop at the Backwoods BBQ. Located on the main strip of Paducah right next to Lowe's this is probably the only restaurant in the entire 50 mile radius that has genuinely great food. The competition in the area? Fazzoli's (cheap Italian fast food), Arby's, Subway, Wendy's-- you get the idea. The one thing about this area of the U.S. is that all of the food is extremely greasy and fattening. I couldn't find a health food store in the area, but there is a new gym there, which I worked out at for several weeks (and I really needed to because I ate A LOT of Backwoods BBQ). The baby back ribs are some of the best I've ever had. The baked beans and potato salad were decent, and the pork sandwich was truly the best ever with pork so tender it made me want to sit back in my booth and talk about bass fishin' and skinny dippin'. Also, the Southern hospitality is really genuine, and that's something us Coasters aren't used to. The prices are extremely affordable. I was able to purchase a meal for 5 for under $20 and there were plenty of left overs. Backwoods is a good place to dine (you can sit at the bar area, or grab a booth), but it also does catering, and I noticed it has very good carry out traffic. It's open every day and its employees are very accomodating. Next time you plan your big adventure to Paducah, hit the Backwoods.

Hey, if you can put time in a bottle, you can surely ship real Kentucky bar-b-que in a cooler! (Don't call me "Surely" though.) My parents, who live in middle Tennessee, sent four pounds of Backwood's pulled pork bar-b-que to my hubs and me all the way out here in Los Angeles. It arrived on the second day via Fed-Ex, in a styrofoam cooler which was wrapped in paper inside the box. Yum! It arrived fresh, tender, smoky, and delicious! The occasion was the Titans' recent playoffs loss to the Ravens. My husband's from Baltimore, and we lived there for several years, so there's this ongoing rivalry. A Titans victory would've won my folks a bushel of crabs. Having grown up in Tennessee and having lived the last three years in Texas, I claim to know good bar-b-que from the fair to middlin' kind, and Backwoods bbq -- despite the logistical disadvantage noted above -- held up very well to that of my favorite places: Bobby Q.'s in Cookeville, TN, Rib N Loin (499-OINK) in Chattanooga, Ironworks (for beef ribs) and Green Mesquite (for beef brisket) in Austin, TX , and The Salt Lick just outside Austin. We paired our West Coast Backwoods dinner with Stubb's sauce, pickles, bread, and deep fried tater logs. Just like home! Mmmmm.
(5)N S.
Not very good barbecue. All the sides taste like they came directly out of a 5 gallon bucket, not homemade. Friendly waitstaff.
(1)Mk Z.
Good BBQ, good value. However service was lacking Saturday night when we were in. Can't let the kids run the store, it's not just cooking, it's service and cleanliness. I am still a fan.
(3)Rodney P.
I discovered this western KY gem in 2004, and have been a faithful customer ever since. The sides are always consistently yummy (although just a little of Backwoods' delicious sauce in the baked beans works wonders) and the pulled and chopped pork, the ham and the ribs are always moth-watering, taste-tempting and finger-lickin' good! If I can borrow a line from "Next Friday", Backwoods "tastes so good, it'll make you wanna slap yo mama!" If you're in Paducah, do yourself a favor and dine with the crew of Backwoods!

After 14 hours of driving from FL to KY, and a couple of hours of sleep in the hotel, we decided to venture out for lunch in Paducah, KY (10/24/2008). After consulting the local Yellow Pages, we decided to hit Backwoods BBQ for some carry-out. Two pulled pork sammiches, a double order of baked beans and a double order of hashbrown casserole. All totalled it was about $10 for lunch which isn't bad. The hashbrowns were pretty good. The baked beans had green pepper in them and a bit too much. When you can taste pepper more than bbq or beans or even bacon grease that's in there, that's not good. The sammiches were, as Michael said, uninspired. The pork was a bit dry and even after adding some sauce, it was still pretty dry. We asked for the buns (over the toasted bread) and it was like they warmed them and then smashed them down on the pork. For as much raving about Sonny's I did previously on this trip, the opposite will happen for Backwoods. Sorry, it seemed to be popular with the locals, but I've had much better BBQ.
(2)Josh R.
Cheap but good bbq. Very simple food, lots of flavor. I liked the chicken a lot. Ribs looked a little dry but I didn't try them.
(5)Michael L.
Friendly folks. The food to my tastes was uninspired. It was ok, nothing horrible, but not a place I would return too.
