I had heard really mixed reviews for this place, so I was a little worried about it. Being gluten free and a vegetarian forced me to eat here during the International BBQ festival, but at least I had an option! The chips were decent, and the salsa was okay. Their hot salsa was really tasty, I wish there were more. I had gotten some veggies fajita nachos, my husband got the veggie fajitas. The cheese sauce was salty, but tasty. They put so much on though that it became more of a soup then nachos. The beans were good, and the veggies were cooked evenly. I was very excited to see in their fajita veggies they had some mushrooms, you don't often get that without paying extra. Normally it's just green bell peppers and onions. My husband's fajitas were cooked well, but it was lacking on the amount of food. I would have expected with veggies they would have given more since they are often much cheaper then meat. After we finished our food it took us a while to flag down our waiter to pay, and it wasn't even all that busy. All in all, we might come back when we are downtown craving some mexican food. It wasn't as bad as many people say, but it wasn't all that great either.

Horrible service and even worse food...queso was watered down, and the chimichanga's were barely fried. Please save your money.

I remember when I was young and this place was actually good. As I write this I'm sitting in the restaurant at a table of 6 people where I'm the only one who has my food (mine got dropped off about 10 minutes ago and everyone else is still waiting). The food is just not very good. Drenched in liquid cheese and not even all that well prepared. To say the service is mediocre would be overstating it. Not only is our server not smiling, he has a permanent scowl affixed to his face. Don't make everyone else's day worse because you don't want to be at work. This is the last chance I'm giving El Toribio. Would be best to open a better restaurant in its place.

The chips were good and that is the only thing I can say about this place. It was dirty inside, the food lacked flavor, and it looks like a dump. Robert Irvine needs to do them a favor and clean the dump up. Nasty!!

This place used to be amazing and has the best location in Owensboro. It is now the absolute worst restaurant in town. Service is dispicable, with patrons largely ignored. You literally have to grab someone and beg to order even a drink. The food has gone completely downhill, is tasteless and nearly inedible. I can't wait until this place is torn down and we can get something that is not useless in its place.

Great view on the river, not so good on the food. Need to get the spicy sauce going and lose that tomato soup salsa that has zero heat. Come on man, get some shredded beef going, lose the ground beef. and do something besides your dark red sauce almost mole on everything. Shoot, go down to Nashville, rip off everything they are doing at Baja burrito and put it in your restaurant- you will have a line down the block...

The only reason people come to this location is because of the view. I'd give the place a 5 start review if it was only for having a margarita on the patio & looking out at the river. However, factoring in the bland food, & the 'store bought' tasting chips & salsa, I have to give it a two. If you want Mexican food that has flavor & is always fresh, you should try Real Hacienda.

We went here last Friday night and waited maybe fifteen minutes to be seated, then another forty minutes at our table before someone came to bring us chips and salsa. As we waited to be seated, there was also a line of people waiting to pay for their food but nobody to help them check out. This basically set the tone for the whole experience... There were plenty of people bussing tables and a hostess seating people, but only one guy actually serving food - several groups who came in about when we did just gave up and left after a while because they seemed to just be seating people without serving anyone. After finally receiving the chips and salsa we hoped someone would actually come take our order, but nobody did, so after another twenty minutes or so we asked the hostess whether the servers knew we were there - she ended up taking our order herself, and ten minutes later our drinks were delivered by a guy who told us "I actually don't work here, I'm just helping out." We got our food maybe fifteen minutes after the drinks - so almost two hours from the time we originally arrived - and when we asked for silverware and napkins the guy said "oh I'm not a server, I only deliver the food" and walked away. We literally went and found our own silverware at that point rather than wait for our food to get cold (the silverware/cups/drinks station for the waiters was visible from the rest of the restaurant, so it's not like we invaded the kitchen to do so or anything). I don't know if it's because I was starving by the time we finally got our food, but it was actually delicious! Nothing unique, but yummy. Drinks were pretty good if not extra strong. Both food and drinks were well-priced. Location is very pretty on the riverfront if you manage to get one of the outdoor tables. So there is a ton of potential here if they could get their act together, but as it is I will certainly never be back.

The place has good salsas and flavor. It was pretty good however I would opt for dishes that did not contain ground beef as that made it lose some authenticity for me.

Really a 0/5. My party of 5 arrived at 7pm on a Friday. There was a decent crowd, but the restaurant was by no means full. I counted six servers, no manager. This staff could've easily handled the floor...if they had been even half competent. Sadly, this staff was not that. We waited at the front door without ever being greeted. A woman was waiting there with her two small children to pay for her meal. She was ignored. We witnessed the chaos for about 15 minutes before abandoning ship. It's a real shame that they're wasting the pretty riverfront location.

Its on the river which is awesome but the food doesn't compare to Real Hacienda.

El Toribio is a pretty standard mexican joint. The big plus that this specific El Toribio has (I think there are 3 in Owensboro) is that it is right on the Ohio River. Although, they are doing some sort of river front construction now it is still really nice. The food here is pretty standard. Rice, beans, chicken/beef, carb... rinse, repeat. But, this place does have some margaritas the size of your head (I think 48ozs!). They also spike it with a good amount of tequila so regardless of what you order, you might like it, you may forget what you ordered, but you def wont care. Service I give a solid average too. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Just standard. Check this place out. A solid date spot for a margarita Monday.

The patio is great if you ignore the hillbilly parade.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
