So glad we decided to call in the order, went inside and it was roasting. It's only upper 70s today and was easily 90+ inside. No way we could've stayed to eat, too hot. We had the rib tips, pulled pork (ordered the dinner but got the sandwich), and brisket also sides collard greens, slaw, Mac n cheese and baked beans. Overall rating -Meh! Brisket was overall tender and slightly juicy. Rib Tips were decent. Mac n cheese and beans nothing special. The only item worthy of this review were the collard greens. Soft, slow cooked, juicy.

I read the other reviews and guess that the place has hit their stride. The pulled pork was good and I got plenty of it. The BBC sauce was tangy and delicious and the baked beans were full of flavor. The service was incredible and I enjoyed my experience enough that I'll be back again soon.

I, like many of the other reviewers, really wanted to like this place. It's within walking distance of my house and I love BBQ. We dined in on a Sunday afternoon and we were the only people there. First bad sign. Second was the awful smell when you first walk in. Third, awful smooth jazz music playing. We were met by a friendly server immediately and given menus. I wanted an iced tea and she informed me they were out. No biggie, I just had a water instead. My husband and I both had the pulled pork sandwich which came with one side. I had the mac and cheese and he got the steak fries. I asked if cole slaw came on the sandwich and was disappointed when it did not so I got a side of that as well. Our food came out quickly and was hot. The pork was moist and flavorful, I was expecting something close to Eli's through and it was far from that. The bun was nothing special and the tiny cup of BBQ sauce was average. The cole slaw was not worth getting but the mac and cheese and fries were pretty good. It wasn't bad, just not worth going back in my opinion.

This is not a bad review. This place is decent on my first visit. Smokey scent throughout the place was good, and the dining area was definitely a BBQ joint. The O-rings Appetizer was good, but presentation could be desired, as it was only 5 onion rings for $5. But they were wide-cut, like Flipdaddy's. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was not really smokey at all. A good pulled pork has a ring of pink on the outside, and this was uniformly gray. It was obviously hand pulled, but I saw no pink "smoke ring". Their Mac&Cheese side was good and peppery. Service was great. Overall, it was a good, not great BBQ joint. I wouldn't deter anyone from going there at all, but it didn't set my world on fire either. Oh, and since everyone asks about the sauce at BBQ places (I usually let the meats/rubs do the talking and add sauce as an accent), their sauce came on the side (a good thing), but it was a very typical molasses based sauce that seemed very generic. #bbquest

I should have read the Yelp reviews. I was having lunch with a friend and he suggested this place. Cool, a new BBQ spot, why not give it a go. This is a former house turned restaurant in Newport. Plenty of places to park. As you enter, there's a bar and then tables to your left for a meal. The first thing I noticed was the smell. Not a delicious smell of BBQ but a horrible one that smelled like the bathroom, full of cleaning products and chemicals (only, the bathroom, with air fresheners, smelled better). When we sat it went away but I have no idea what's going on in that entrance way. The menu is your basic mix of BBQ items. I got the half stack of ribs with sides of cornbread, potato salad and cole slaw. All, and I say this without ever using the word, terrible. Terrible. The ribs were dry to the bone and hard. The coleslaw was flavourless and frozen. The potato salad tasted as if it came right out of the can. Gah! Awful all around. The reviews for this place are terrible and I checked them far too late. Should have read them earlier and avoided all together. The only thing that saved this spot was the service, was was friendly and welcoming. The waitress was incredibly nice, checked on us, refilled our drinks, thanked us for coming and hoped we'd come back soon. It's just a shame she works here, she deserves better.

Just got delivery from southern smoke. The owner himself delivered the food and told me they are currently operating out of Ft Thomas pub but will be back in Newport soon. Being a bbq aficionado myself. .I do my own bbq catering. ...I can tell you I loved everything I had. The pulled pork, the ribs, Mac and cheese, and the collard greens were outstanding! I don't get all the negative reviews I've read. Maybe cause they were new. I really hope they get back to Newport and keep up the great job!

We love this place and hope it sticks around! We've only been here a few times for lunch but every time it's been very easy to get a table and our experience has been very positive. Waitresses have always been very friendly and helpful and the food has been really good. My favorite is the pork sandwich with extra BBQ sauce and a side of mac n cheese - yum! Location isn't great since it's off the beaten path of Monmouth Street/Newport on the Levee, but definitely worth a try for those of you that haven't been yet!!

The ribs are good when they have them. On my second time to this BBQ joint , my girlfriend and I sat down a ordered. Both of us order an half rack of ribs. 20 mins go by and the server informs us that they have ran out of ribs. It took 20 after the order to find that out? that was my second time in there and the first wasn't all that great. So. Never again.

I was out the other day and had to go around the block to turn around - that's when I noticed this new place with the BBQ and Happy Hour signs in the window. I noticed the smoker out back and realized we need to try it out. Tonight was the night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them because they are local and we need new local food venues in Newport. But, they need to make a few tweaks. First, I think they have an identity crisis regarding ambiance. Are they a BBQ Smoke House or a Hip Hop Bar. When we first walked in, I heard the loud hip hop music and the pool table and thought it was just a bar with a bbq sign in the window. But then when we walked back to the restaurant, it was so charming with the hardwood floors and the tables, etc. We sat down and then I heard the 'dinner' music, but it was combined with the hip hop music from the bar. We had the 1/2 slab of ribs, the rib tips, baked beans and collard greens. I, personally, didn't hate the ribs at all, but my boyfriend thought they were a little dry. The baked beans were very good. We each had a bottled beer. I wish they had something to hang my hat on to get me coming back often. I wish them luck - and we will probably give them a second chance.

I did not dine in, but got a couple items to go. Everyone working there was super duper friendly. And I got my order quickly. They talked me into getting a piece of homemade pie. It was sweet potato with coconut cream topping. Sounded interesting to me so I thought I'd give it a try. The pie was excellent! Wish I could say the same about the rest of the food. :( I want to love this place, it's charming and everyone there was extremely nice. But the food was just okay. I got the pulled chicken sandwich. The chicken had a real nice smoke flavor, but it was really dry. I tried to make it better by pouring their BBQ sauce over it, but I wasn't a fan of the sauce either. I got mac and cheese as my side item. It was just okay. They have several other items on their menu such as fish, burgers and a ton of appetizers. I think I'll give this place one more try and try something different. The place has a real cozy feel with hardwood floors, my only complaint about the ambiance is the elevator music they had playing. Bad. Just bad. They should hook up a jukebox or pay $9.99 a mo. and get Spotify and play some real music please. :) Other than that, it's a nice place. They have a bar area and a big pool table area too.

Great beef brisket! The pulled pork was pretty good too. The BBQ sauce is the thick, sweet type- similar to Sweet Baby Ray's. Not my favorite type, but it was decent. I think a wider variety of sauces would be a great compliment to the really good meats. I'd love to have their pulled pork, with a drizzle of some Carolina gold-style BBQ sauce. The loaded fries are really good and the mac and cheese is good.

Super yummy! The mac n cheese was seriously some of the best I have had! And they deliver! Definitely will be having this again!

I'm so sad to see the negative reviews here...I live in newport, and we frequent Southern Smoke, and I absolutely adore it. To be fair, we do mostly take out, not dine in. I've eaten the wings, the brisket, pulled pork, ribs, beans, cole slaw, mac n cheese, and sweet potatoes. I'm not a huge fan of the ribs, but everything else I've absolutely loved. Their wings are really great, and a nice touch for a BBQ place. The brisket is absolutely melt-in-your-mouth and to die for. I have cravings for it! I also think their jalepeno chips and BBQ sauce are delicious. Overall, the place is really no-frills, run by a local husband and wife. I've really enjoyed both the service and the food I've had every time I've been there, and really hope it sticks around. We need all the local places we can get in Newport, and it's so nice to be able to walk to Southern Smoke!
