If you haven't noticed a theme, I enjoy these pizza places where you can custom your very own pizza pie. Uncle Maddio's was the first on the Louisville scene to offer that. In the quirky part of Bardstown Rd, now home to a few other chain restaurants, Uncle Maddio's still stands out. The signature pies are incredible. My favorite is the Greek. I even got the Southwest Baja minus the chicken, replacing it with Tofu instead, which was also delicious. Doing Tofu well is not easy, but they pulled it off. They also have the coke machine that can individualize your drink. Vanilla Raspberry Coke Zero? Yes please. The only thing keeping me from giving Uncle Maddio's 5 stars is that they don't have enough staff to keep up with the orders and register. The day I went multiple tables were waiting to be cleaned limiting the available space. It was fine for the day I went since it wasn't very busy, but you could tell the staff was stretched on even that day. Regardless, a great experience and I can't wait to go back.

Uncle Maddios is a great neighborhood pizza joint. The prices are fairly cheap, and the create your own pizza is a good deal (specially on Mondays) The staff is nice and are easy to deal with for the most part. The setting is nice with the booths making it intimate that's great for dates or just hanging out with friends. There is outdoor seating as well and parking is small but since it's right in bardstown road you can walk to it parking from another area nearby. I am very pleased with Uncle Maddios so far.

Stopped here for dinner after talking about going for a long time. We had the Santa FL salad, and the Italian paying sandwich. First, the person taking our order verified it twice and still made the wrong sandwich. After correcting it, they just run it through the pizza oven... That doesn't make a panini, just a toasted sandwich. Instead of bringing all the items for the table, they brought the salad right away then had to being the sandwich. Not very efficient. Although the sandwich ok, the salad was terrible! All of the flavor was in the five tiny pieces is chicken... So salty I couldn't hardly eat it. Probably won't go back.

Great atmosphere, the restaurant is clean and the location is perfect; in the middle of Bardstown rd. Most importantly the food is fantastic. numerous options for pizza, as you get to choose your toppings right in front of you. Or choose from the menu, I would recommend the Greek pizza.

Love the computerized soda machine here. The personal pizza options are serviceable. I come here occasionally with members of my church and we always find a way to gather 10-20 people in the center of the dining area and that is appreciated. This is a welcome addition to the already crowded Highlands pizza selection and finding a niche in all that competition is an accomplishment in itself.

Dear Mom and Dad ... Wait - nope - stop. Not a single god damn thing about this place is worth writing home about. So I get here around 8pm on a Sunday. The parking lot was empty and I was hurting for some pizza, so I figured "eh, why not give this place a try." It looked a little chain(ish) but thats no real fault in my book. This place was nearly empty: me, the workers, and a small family (two women and two children - I'm saying family because they looked like a family - all y'all LGBTQ-haters can bite me). Menu looked good - if not a bit tricky to figure out: I wasn't about to stand here like a chump so i just ordered the first thing that jumped out - the BBQ pizza (all y'all BBQ-haters can bite me). I proceeded down the line and paid for my pizza - 9 bucks, score. The two women at the register said "just find a seat wherever and we'll bring it out." Find a seat indeed. This place was trashed: piles of post-pizza garbage on the majority of the tables (maybe 10 out of the 15 or 16 spots). I wasn't about to bus their tables so I sat there uncomfortably amongst the filth and waited. The two ladies at the register just talked while the fella who took my order tossed the pizza on the conveyer belt. 10 minutes later my pizza arrived to my table - the two register ladies took off outside because, fuck it - what ever they had to do was more important than cleaning up the joint. Pizza was okay - nothing to write home about. A bit saltier than I expected. The tomatoey BBQ sauce was tasty and that's good because the pizza was swimming in the shit. Seriously, bring a side of pasta and make two meals out of all this sauce. The crust was decent - soggy thanks to all the sauce. As I sat there cleaning the sauce from my face I glanced outside at the two register women, the unmistakable glow of a cigarette in one of their mouths. Whatever, I get it, I've worked in this line of work and you need to treat yourself to the simple pleasures whenever you can. But is sucking down some cancer candy more important than keeping your front-of-house free of filth? I'd go back - but I'd have to really be desperate. Staff that pays such little attention to obvious things aren't likely to pay much attention to the smaller details that can make or break a good meal. and because everyone else seems to mention it: blah blah blah coke machine gadget.

Great Gluten Free Crust! My wife and I enjoy going to Uncle Maddios for a quick bite out. The concept is similar to Chipotle, but for pizza. You choose your crust, your sauce and toppings (from a toppings type bar by the entrance) and they put it together for you, throw it into the conveyor oven and about 10 minutes later you have your pizza. You can choose one of their premium pizzas, which includes more toppings, but I've always been pretty pleased with 9 inch personal pizza with three toppings of your choice. The pizza is better than your average take out (Dominos or Papa Johns), but there are better options for regular gluten filled pizzas. However, my wife (who is wheat intolerant) swears by the gluten free crust and I can't disagree that it is very tasty. For a quick lunch or dinner it's hard to beat Uncle Maddios. The pizzas are good, staff friendly, and you'll be ready to dig in before you know it. I gave an extra star for the gluten free crust. It really is great.

So, when my seven-year-old recommended this place, I knew I had to check it out. She rarely eats out without me, so I really didn't like that she had tried a place that I hadn't. Plus, she has my genes and my discerning palate, so I trust her guidance. I wasn't led astray. She thought it was cool that she could have her own individual pan pizza with the topping of her choice and pick a soft drink from a touchscreen dispenser. I thought the price was right and I liked the fresh ingredients used to make a pizza as I watched was great. The menu was a lot to absorb, so I felt a little pressure to make a hasty decision. I opted for a 14" portabello pesto signature pizza on traditional crust because I thought it would be enough to share with another adult. Now, I admittedly have a hearty appetite, and I was really hungry when we visited. The pie was perfect. I ate every last bite and had to order another pizza to take home. My carnivorous husband was treated to The Big Max in the same size. He really enjoyed it, as did our kids who completely devoured their individual pizzas. I'm glad I didn't have to share mine. So, plan on ordering your own own pizza when you go. It's worth it.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Everyone loves the touchscreen Coke machine. Same one you see in a lot of DQs in and around Louisville and something I first encountered visiting Coca-Cola's corporate office 4 years ago. But I don't like them. They are a pain. An efficiency nightmare, as they create long lines and the invariable indecisiveness that people tend to get when confronted with 150 choices for flavors. As one reviewer noted, it would be cool to have in the home but in my opinion, that's about it. But this isn't about a Coke machine. Another 'watch us make your food using fresh ingredients' type of joint, Uncle Maddio's hits all the marks: 1) Open floor plan with lots of windows, check. 2) Couple unobtrusive flat screen TVs for sports or news, check. 3) Large menu board at front with hip names for items, check. 4) Full kitchen and prep station in plain sight, check. 5) Relatively friendly but oblivious counter service, check. Really, the checklist could go on but you get the idea, it all becomes fairly generic and the personality of a place thus lies in their food and service. And the food is a-ok, even as high as 4-stars as it's pretty fresh and tasty. The service could be much better as a couple were a little too intent on making sure they were able to close doors on time while customers were walking in. And rushing leads to mistakes, like mistaking that my order was dine-in and not carry-out and we've been sitting here for quite some time waiting for some pizzas we watched you make. But thanks for the breadsticks in apology for the error, as they were fairly tasty. They may have saved you a star, although you probably could have presented them differently, because I didn't need to know that it was either pass them to us or they were headed to the trashcan.

This place has great made to order pies. Love the variety of toppings, and the freshness. I've had blaze, and think this is much better as their crust is thicker, and they also have wheat crust (something blaze does not have). Great location within walking distance of the great bars in the area

Great veggie pizza and apple crisp the service is a bit slow at times, but over all not too bad, they also have gluten free choices even beer.

If you're going to be 'bad' and have pizza, this is a great place to head to eat very healthy, customizable versions of the food. $20 got us a medium, wheat crust pie with entirely vegan toppings, including the 'cheese'. They even have tofu as a topping! I found the amount of toppings to be moderate, not too heavy and I read that they use only fresh produce, nothing canned. Great for groups because it's large and you pay at the counter, not the table. Not a date spot, great for families though. The staff was helpful, courteous and patient as we made our choices. We were here at 1 so we just missed the lunch rush and the place was only slightly untidy or out of stock. Also I noticed they offer free crafts and art for kids on Saturdays but I wanted to play, too. I recommend it! I'll be back.

I love pizza, and being from Chicago, I am very picky about pizza. I love all sorts of different pizzas and Maddio's is one of the best places in LOUKY. I like how you can create your own pizza or choose one of the pizzas on the menu. Since my first visit I have been back once and will continue to go back until on find a better place..... Which, by the way, I expect to be a long time.

What a clever concept -- I'd love seeing more of these around, and of course, I love that they have great vegan options and don't gouge you for it. When you walk in, there's a large menu up to build your own pizza (or pick a recommended one). The staff is very nice, and the process isn't too confusing. The soda machine is indeed cool -- but I'm a fan of having multiple taps so that more than one person can get water/etc. I'd go back when I'm in the area.

Considering all of the pizza places there are in the Highlands, my original thought when I seen Maddios going in was "great, another pizza place", but Maddios actually brings something to the table that other pizza places in the area do not. 1) The prices are much more reasonable than some of the other options (and they offer individual sizes) also, included in the price is 3 toppings. 2) Gluten-free and vegan options 3) fresh, local ingredients 4) Electronic coke machine (because who doesn't love cool gadgets?) I agree with some previous comments that the service isn't always the friendliest, but they've never messed my order up and that's all I really care about--especially since you order and pay at the counter. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a quick, reasonably priced pizza. PS: I don't know if it's still available, but if you like their facebook page you get a coupon for a free individual pizza with the purchase of a drink.

This is a super fun place. It's like a Subway for pizza. This place has more toppings than one could think. I love the bbq chicken pizza. But you can create your own also. But I have learned throughout my adventures to different places, if they suggest a way to have something there. GET IT! They know what they are doing, trust them and dive in. Saying this, their speciality menu pizza are super fun and are a must try. ALSO They have an awesome Coke machine, it has over 150 flavors of Coke products, super fun right? Just don't get upset if you have to wait in a line to pick, some people can't decide nor work with technology. It's kid friendly and the people are nice there. Fun Sunday evening dinner.

I discovered this pizza joint thanks to a friend's Facebook post. He posted a picture of their BBQ Chicken pizza and it looked amazing. My wife is very gluten intolerant, so she can't enjoy some of the foods she loves as often - pizza being one of them. Any place that offers gluten free items immediately peeks her attention. Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint didn't disappoint. Like many of the other reviews say, this is the SubWay of pizza. You start by choosing your crust and sauce and then load it with toppings. If you're indecisive, you can choose from the many pizza or salad options on their menu. I went with the aforementioned BBQ chicken pizza. Its ingredients are very similar to any BBQ pizza you would order at one of the nationwide delivery chains. But they add corn and fresh herbs on top, which gives the pizza a nice fresh feel. What sets this pizza apart from the larger chains is the execution. It's just simply better, the ingredients are fresh and you can tell. My wife built her own pizza on top of gluten free crust - pepperoni, bacon, and jalapeno. She loved it. I tried a bite and was impressed it was actually gluten free. Gluten free flour tends to add a grainy texture to the food, but the way Uncle Maddio's does it up really blurs the line between traditional pizza crust and gluten free. And most of y'all have mentioned the coke machine. I concur. It's amazing and I'd love to have one in my house.

All of the topping options are great, they have gluten free dough (admittedly, this is why I went in the first place - it's good!), and both my husband and I both found that the overall product was very tasty. Service was also very prompt and friendly. This place is close to our home- I see many more visits in our future. :)

We love pizza and with the many many pizza places popping up around Louisville it's always easy to find a new place to try. Uncle Maddios is the Subway of pizza. You order at the counter and watch as your pizza is prepared. They have specialty pies you can choose from or you can create your own. We went with the Big Max. Basically their version of a meat lovers. It had sausage, pepperoni, bacon, and meatballs. It was very good, I particularly liked the addition of meatballs since they aren't always included on a meat pizza. I also liked that the meat lovers did not include ham. I just cannot stand ham on a pizza. People always give me a strange look when I say this so I know I'm weird but ham just doesn't belong on pizza. Anyway since most meat lovers pizzas do include ham it makes ordering a pie to share with my husband tricky. He loves an all meat pizza and I won't eat it if it has ham. This was perfect for us to share. We also had Caesar side salads which were just ok but I did like the pizza dough croutons that they came with. A medium pizza and two salads was plenty of food for us and it wasn't too expensive in my opinion. I will agree with everyone else that their coke machine is pretty neat, I had a raspberry coke, my husband however who will never get anything besides a regular coke found it to be a bit of a hassle. Also waiting behind little kids who can't decide what to get is a bit annoying. I did like that the pizza arrived quickly because at many pizza places I feel like it takes a bit too long considering a pizza can be made in just a minute or two and cooks in maybe 10 to 15 minutes after that. We would definitely come back and would definitely bring our kids next time.

i've been here twice. the food is pretty good for a quick meal, and i like ordering and paying at the counter (great for groups when everyone's paying their own way). each time i've been in, i haven't been able to get what i wanted. the gluten-free crust doesn't come in every size. they've never had chicken sausage even though it's on the menu and i've asked for it each time. lastly, i had to rate this place just average because the service is waaaay below average. the two gals working last night were so unfriendly. i even tipped the cashier at the register and she didn't even acknowledge it. total blunt affect when she delivered my food. my husband remarked how unfriendly they were, and he was so absorbed in the mich state v. michigan b-ball game that i was surprised he even noticed. unreal. because of the service, i probably won't be going here again.

I ordered takeout from Uncle Maddio's a few days ago, and I was impressed with the quality and price. It was really busy when I went, but I was able to get my pizza in a timely manner. The staff was very nice, and even gave suggestions on what items to add. The Coke drink dispenser was the highlight... any flavor combination that you want! I will definitely go back for another visit!

Still trying to figure out why of all the city of Louisville they chose Bardstown Rd. Home to so much incredible pizza it is hard to get a recommendation to go to a new one. But I'm one of those people who loves trying different things. Different dishes even at my favorite restaurants, a different country every year I can. So my sister and I found ourselves here with my Groupon/LivingSocial whichever one it was. It is nice and bright and still pretty cozy. A bit of a chain feel, but not in your face at all. I loved the ingredients out there/build your own pizza bit. Neat. And lots of options. We got side salads and shared the Greek. I watched them roll some of the stuff in the Greek dressing and was excited. So our food turned out pretty good. Decent salads and a medium sized pizza for 20ish bucks plus tip. The pizza was good, though I didn't taste much of the Greek flavoring, which was surprising and disappointing. I watched him put it on there. Still a pizza I would eat again and I liked the wheat crust. Just hard to say I would recommend it with soooo many great choices within a mile. And the perk of the parking lot ended up being an annoying parking lot with a retarded layout. Hmm. And next to a mattress store all lit up at night. A little strip mall-ish. Super great job on the staffing though - just not a fan on the location.

Every review on here started with the pizza, but I'm going a different route. The thing I fell in love with during my first visit to Uncle Maddio's was the coke machine. This was the first time I had the pleasure of meeting this seemingly space-age touch screen coke machine that allowed me to have one of over 100 beverages. When I thought my job was done when I told said future-box that I wanted a Sprite Zero, but instead this was only the beginning. It wanted to know if I wanted a Cherry Sprite Zero, a Strawberry Sprite Zero, a Grape Sprite Zero and three or four other Sprite Zero options. I had a blast trying all kinds of combinations. The Coke Machine of the Future was like a Sonic on Steroids tucked away neatly in the corner! Don't think for a minute that I let the coke machine take my attention away from the pizza for too long. I love the set-up of this place as it has a Q'doba feel to choosing the kind of pizza you'll be munching on. First you get your choice of crust, then your choice of pizza sauce, followed by your choice of cheese and last but not least, your choice of toppings. Less than 8 minutes later, the piping hot pizza was delivered to my table. If you're a fan of a tasty, fresh thin-crust pizza, then you'll dig Uncle Maddio's. Aside from the amazing coke machine and memorable grub, the staff at this new pizza joint was awesome. They did a great job filling us in on how the place worked and letting us know that there were TONS of pizza combinations. Can't wait to go back!

Okay pizza...we had the Spicy Italian. Toppings are fresh and they don't hold back on how much they put on. Crust was quite forgettable...flimsy and soggy. For the price, there are too many wonderful independents in town to make Uncle Maddios a "must come back" restaurant.

Look, when my wife an I walked into that place today we actually thought we had found something nice... but when we receive our "panini"... what a disappointment. Panini are pressed and toasted sandwiches... my bread was at best warm and by no stretch of the imagination pressed. I ordered an Italian Panini (by the way, if it was Italian it wouldn't be a panini, it would be a paninio) and it came with one VERY THIN slice of ham and a few VERY THIN slices of salami. It feels like I ate a bread sandwich. My wife's was an eggplant marinara and the marinara sauce was clearly straight our of a can. Also her bread was warm and not pressed. You know, you only have to watch a few cooking shows to realize that affordable food doesn't have to be of bad quality. I did see a few pizzas that looked decent, but I can't imagine they would be any good. Their soda machine was the only good thing about that place. By the way, staff wasn't bad, but wasn't pleasant either. Unless they change their food drastically, this place is gonna be a one visit only place for me. Written by my husband, Lucas Almeida

I visited UM last week for the first time after having wanted to go since they first opened. It was good, but not outstanding, I'd say. I tried the veggie pizza (minus zucchini) on whole wheat dough. And of course I played with the soda machine, too, trying a variety of Dr. Pepper flavors. The service was slow for us (our pizza was goofed and had to be re-made) but generally the food seemed to come out to customers quickly. I'd like to visit again to form a second opinion.

So far... SO GREAT! Make your own pizza? Kramer from Seinfeld was right! Only thing that would make it better is, 1) I want to get my hands on those toppings (micromanaging is a skill), and 2) This pizza joint is just too far from my home. We need one closer!

The staff at Uncle Maddio's could use a real attitude adjustment. I visited the restaurant around 9pm on a Saturday night, and was ignored for several minutes before being helped; the staff were rude and seemed quite taken back by the effort of making a pizza for me - sorry, I know it's 9pm but you're open later on Saturday evenings. I also watched my pizza come out of the oven and sit at the end of the conveyor belt for a few minutes while the staff idly looked at it sitting there, before eventually taking it off the belt and cutting it up and handing it over with a sigh. Really? I'm new to this area, so I don't know what passes for good service, but this was unacceptable and the pizza was not even all that good. I will not be back. If I ran this business, I'd pay more attention to how things are going on the weekend evenings because it seems a bit out of control.

This kind of place brings out the most extreme curmudgeon in me. First off, the pizza ain't bad -- not amazing, but perfectly acceptable. What I just can't stand is overwhelming corporate chain nonsense the customer must endure in order to get the final product. EVERYTHING here screams MBA-driven, focus-group tested, cost-benefit approved "restaurant experience". Just who might "Uncle Maddio" be, exactly? I'm guessing a computer in the home corporation's suburban Atlanta/Austin/Orlando/Wherever office park came up with "him". It most likely also dictated the insincere, ultra-smiley, word-for-word-same, guest "welcome" one gets upon entering. "Have you ever been here before?!?" leads into a long-winded explanation of the obvious: you're looking at an array of ingredients; what would you like put on the pizza I'm about to place on our baking contraption? Big letters on the wall indicate a "Fresh Dough Center", or something, but my future pie started pre-formed, and unwrapped from tin foil as I stood there, watching. Ingredients are doled out with absolute precision from surgical-looking scoops, lest no one receive a milligram more than the mandated portion. The inevitable up-sell attempt is made at check-out, then you're handed a cup for a DIY beverage acquisition exercise before a somewhat-alarming cola robot dispensing devise. Sheesh. Did they have to put this thing on Bardstown Road, of all places???
