Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

There is a reason almost every review here is five stars...this place is the real deal. Simple, cheap, delicious tacos and burritos. Delicious. Worth the trip out on Preston...you can combine your trip with shopping at Unique Thrift. Friendly and prompt service with the best tacos I have found in Louisville. Yes, this place is all that.

I've decided I'm not a fan of beef brain tacos. If it's weird and on a mexican taco menu I want to try it. I may have to rethink that strategy. The brains weren't bad just an unusual texture and a bit of a metallic flavor. The consistency of sea urchin. This little taqueria on Preston Highway is a winner. It is a little hard to find, It's in a strip that runs perpendicular to the road. It is worth the effort. Besides the brain taco, I wisely ordered back up. Al Pastor and Chorizo. These were very flavorful and were only $1.75 each. 3 tacos and I was full and happy and a little smarter I think. The hot sauces that come with the tacos are awesome. The green sauce tastes and looks like avacado puree and then the heat comes. A nice healthy dose of it. The red is tasty also. Chili based, the perfect condiment. Look forward to trying the rest of the menu.

This seems to be a no-nonsense, authentic Mexican eatery for Mexicans. Bilingual menu (and a number of off-menu items--ask for the beans!). I tried the chicken, the pork and the chorizo, each taco style. They were the best I've had. Staff was very kind and indulged my crappy Spanish. They were pretty family friendly too. Don't forget to use those sauces they put on your table. Excellent.

Enjoyed lunch here the other day with one of my two main taco partners. This had been his taco joint before I introduced him to El Molcajete--cuz once you go El Molcajete, you never go back. But, this is a very solid second place for tacos in Louisville. As always at my first visit to a taco joint, I tried the carnitas and the chorizo tacos. The carnitas had great texture and the amount of meat was generous, but I actually had to salt the taco between bites to pull flavor out of it, so that gave me a bit of sad face. The chorizo, as my pal pointed out, was "on point" that day. Salty and flavorful, just the way this taco bish likes it. My companion had the al carbon taco and that was positively delicious. If I ever return, I'd skip the carnitas and go for one of those in addition to the chorizo taco. Or, I might snag a quesadilla, which are cheap, simple and no frills. La Mexicana also serves the same avocado jalapeño sauce that El Molcajete does, but theirs is significantly more heat oriented, which kind of defeats the purpose of the cooling avocado in my opinion. And, there's the sadness of no free chips and amazeballs salsa while you wait for your taco, while their tacos are actually 25¢ more a piece, which also knocks La Mexicana down compared to El Molcajete. Overall, if I was in the hood (Unique Thrift!!!), I'd definitely go again, and try something new. I think if I played around with the menu a bit, I might find some things that are really terrific. However, the bar is set so high with El Molcajete, there's just no reason to seek this place out.

If you are looking for a hole in the wall with great food at cheap prices this is the place to go. The menu is simplistic as with the food presentation, but the taste is great. Had the carnitas torta. Bread was awesome and the carnitas was well cooked no toothy over cooked pork chew. The lengua tacos were good and tender. Tried some of my friends chicken burrito, was quite tasty and the tortilla used had a home made chew texture. Being away from California it had been difficult to find some replacements good wise, but Mexicana gets things right. Will be back for sure, despite it's tucked away location.

I love this place! They have amazing food, and they give good portions. Their red and green sauce they give with the food is wonderful, however, the hotness veries so be sure to do a pinky dip test first! Hahaha

I'm hesitant to write a review because this place is such a hidden gem, but Taqueria La Mexicana is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. Service is always prompt, their waitstaff is friendly and accommodating (I've had mixed experiences as an English-speaker in these establishments), and their food is always fresh off the grill and well-seasoned. The salsas they provide you with are excellent, a creamy avocado flavored sauce and a smoky adobo sauce. They make excellent burritos and tortas, their cubano in particular is a wonderful blend of thick ham and spicy chorizo. Downsides are 1. it's a rather small establishment, so carryout might be your best option, particularly during the lunch rush, 2. they don't offer any vegetarian options (their refried beans are cooked in chorizo), and 3. if you're used to tortillas being served at your Mexican restaurant of choice, you're going to be in for a disappointment. Those being said, this place is a great place to stop in for the Mexican take on comfort food.

This. Place. Rocks. My husband had tacos and I had a steak burrito. I wasn't hungry but I still DEVOURED my burrito. It was so flavorful! The sauces they serve on the side are spicy and delicious! I will definitely be coming here again!

Good, but not great. I am visiting Louisville for work and wanted to get away from chains and try local. I was craving some Mexican and this place was close to both my work and my hotel...so when I read all of the wonderful reviews I couldn't believe how serendipitous!! So perhaps I went into my experience with too high of expectations, but I was a little let down. I strongly prefer authentic Mexican over American-Mexican, so the off the beaten path, minimalist atmosphere of the restaurant was unusually appealing to me actually...but I was sadly let down by the lack of serious flavor in the tacos. I got a few tacos...all of which were ok but not especially memorable, the chorizo was the best of the ones I tried though. The squeeze of lime that I put on top was DESPERATELY needed...I can't imagine the level of blandness that would have happened without it. The green saucey stuff served on the side was decent, but a strange flavor that I couldn't totally put my finger on...not all together unpleasant, just not identifiable, so a little strange. And the salsa on the side was H-O-T...and I have a pretty high tolerance for heat. The surprise was the cheese quesadilla...whatever cheese was inside was DELICIOUS. The quesadilla is truly what single-handedly earned this place above 1 star. Also, the service was extremely quick and efficient and the food was prepared really quickly as well...so that was good for me too after a long day at work.

I think these are the best tacos I've ever had. My husband disagrees and would probably rank it 3 stars. Hot sauce is so hot and flavorful as is whatever the green stuff is. Very authentic. From the server that barely speaks English to the soap operas playing. Great prices too.

Our first time there. The place was clean, the service was great and the food was good.

This is the real deal! The most authentic Mexican taqueria I have found in Louisville. There is nothing fancy about the taqueria: as it should be. There are two televisions in the taqueria, and on my visit, both were tuned to Univision. Staff were friendly, and both people who interacted with me spoke good English. The menu offers tacos, sopes, burritos, and quesadillas. Along with the meats you would expect (carne asada; chicken, barbacoa, carnitas, chorizo, pastor), you can choose more adventurous offerings like tongue, head, skin or brains. On this visit, I ordered a burrito al pastor. It was ready very quickly, and was wonderful! Everything was perfect: the meat, beans and vegetables worked perfectly together. The burrito had crema mexicana inside, but in an amount that brought everything together. My burrito was so delicious that I want to try something else immediately, but I'll have the self discipline to wait for my next visit! I may become a regular here.

Amazing authentic Mexican food in the Preston Highway/Fern Valley Rd area. A little tough to find but once you do, you'll be back for more. Trust me.

I ran across this place on Yelp and had amazing reviews so I just had to try it out. I went with the chicken burrito (the menu on the yelp page must be for another restaurant, by the way). I had planned to get something on the menu that didn't exist so once I got there I had to chance my mind. It was good, but I would say a little pricey for a burrito alone and no sides. ($7.41 after tax and that's not including the tip) Anyway, the burrito did come with a container of sauce that I put in the middle where the burrito was sliced in half. It was SO HOT that I almost ruined my lunch. I had to avoid the spots that I put the sauce after I started breathing again because it was that hot. After seeing the pics, next time I'm going to try the quesadilla.

Small little place hidden in a retail strip of the enormous Big Lots parking lot. Had the civiche cocktail thing with shrimp, squid, avocado, onion and cilantro as well as the chorizo burrito. The burrito is $6.99 and off the hook good. The civiche thing looks great, but taste ok for $10.99. Very fresh but lacked flavor unless your bite had plenty of onion or cilantro in it. Service was pleasant and fast. Between this place and Frank's Meats Preston has a couple of great local eats at great prices.

Simplistic and Delicious! I went here on a suggestion and wasn't disapointed. I ordered a torta (steak) and two taco's (chicken and steak) to go. I also ordered a juice that was a deep red color and a little tart. Everything was soo yummy! I definitely will be back.

Hole in the wall authentic Mexican restaurant. It's about a 7 topper..more like a taco stand within a strip mall but the food is AWESOME! I've only been here late evening but I'm sure this place is packed for lunch. Cheap food...authentic mexican. My first visit I was a bit turned off bc the waitress spoke zero English (nor anyone in the kitchen supposedly) and she apparently couldn't understand my highschool broken but comprehensible spanish. Went back a second time...different waitress and it went smoothly. Definitely a place you have to check out Any of the tacos and quesadillas A++

Wow, how awesome is this place?! After a long day spent thrifting, this joint hit the spot and fueled us up for the bargain hunting at Unique Thrift right across the way. The generous heaping of cilantro that topped off my chicken taco warmed me up to the place. That tiny taco was $1.75. The $3 quesidilla filled only with queso - all it needs - brought back memories of my brief childhood stint in Arizona (back when quesidillas comprised 75% of my diet). And that's what sold me on La Mexicana. Look at the photos and you can see that La Mexicana cooks their tortillas perfectly. You can taste the butter on the golden browned splotches that form over the heat. Mmm. And no greasiness! Ok, about an hour later I realized I ate an excessively light lunch...but then I remembered I still had some of their Mexican Coca-Cola left over! High fructose corn syrup free, this one is made with real sugar. They've got tons of other Mexican sodas if sodas are your thing. They're not mine, but who can pass up the novelty? I'd definitely have to get either more tacos or their $6.99 burrito next time. But I don't know if novelty could even tempt to me to try their beef head or tongue tacos. Photos of these dishes might help, dear Yelpers...
