Small and unassuming off river road, do not let its size deceive you. Menu is small and focused on BBQ. I got an order of the beef brisket sandwich with 2 sides (potato salad mayo style, BBQ beans) and a order of rib tips. When asked about sauce I got it on the side. The sides I had were great, especially the beans. The beans probably use the sauce they make and had bits of pork. There is no need for the sauce at all (sauce is on the sweet side) for the meat, they stand well on their own. Big plus to the fact the brisket pieces I got are huge, could they slice it thinner to make the sandwich more portable, maybe bit it is still good. The rib tips are tender smokey goodness also. I would definitely make a trip back here when my schedule fits. Their hours are pretty short, but the awesomeness of the food I had covers up that issue.

Ask the cook for the f***in' brisket! It is the same as the regular river road bbq brisket (delicious), but it comes dripping with sarcasm.

Pulled pork sandwich was pretty darn good, but the BBQ was my favorite part. Great flavor. Slaw and beans were good, not amazing, but who comes here for sides?Unfortunately they were out of brisket when I arrived for a late lunch, I suspect that happens often

5 stars for the meat! And it is all about the meat! I literally did not like BBQ a year ago. I know, it's blasphemous. However, I am now playing catch up and eating at all the lovely BBQ places that I have been neglecting for the past 25 years. I can say without a doubt that this place IS THE BEST IN LOUISVILLE! It's not a pretty place and there aren't any extra perks when you go. However, if you want the best BBQ pulled pork sandwich in town- here it is. I can't put it any simpler than that!

BBQ at its best. Smoked with cherry and hickory, the pulled pork, brisket and rib tips were outstanding. This pit master knows what he's doing. The restaurant is also very clean.

Excellent food and service! The brisket is perfection, and the sides are also delectable. The BBQ sauce has the right balance of sweet, tang and spice. We also loved the no-fuss menu and friendly staff! If you like BBQ, and you're in Louisville, you must stop by!

Best BBQ in louisville. And their homemade potato salad is even better :) Piled high mouth watering pulled pork with a homemade sauce. The BBQ sauce isn't like most places. They don't have 8 different crappy flavors. Riverside has ONE and it is all you could ever want. I have been twice a week the last 3 weeks.

These folks are super sweet and John's got his bbq down to a science. Give this place a try. You'll be glad you did!

How on earth was this place empty when I walked in? My pork sandwich was absolutely splendid!
(5)David L.
Best BBQ ever!! And the sauce is amazing - a little sweet with a nice kick. Both the pork and the brisket are outstanding.

What a place! We stopped in on a Wednesday after a walk across the Big Four bridge. The man and woman behind the counter couldn't have been nicer. They showed us what all the different sides looked liked before we ordered. We eventually decided on the pulled pork Dinner for 4 for $22.95. The BBQ was incredible, the potato salad smooth and creamy, the baked beans full of chunks of BBQ. I got outvoted by my wife on ordering the slaw, and they even gave me a little free sympathy serving of it for free. We took it home and had dinner two nights in a row. We are on a search for the best BBQ joint in louisville and so far this place leads the pack!

The BBQ is very good. Seems to be run by a mom and pop kind of deal. You will never go away hungry here. The menu is very limited and if your don't get your order in early enough you will find yourself eating the only thing left. (If i remember right there was pulled pork or Brisket as well as a few sides) I tend to get the sauce on the side because I am not a fan of it, my husband however enjoys it. The one thing I found odd was the hours that they are open. Staying open till 7 would be nice to get some of the late dinner people but then maybe they just didn't have the crowd to support that.

We have driven by here many times and stopped in to see if they would sell us some firewood, because it's hard to find wood here for our own smoker. We went in and the guy working behind the counter said the owners would be in soon. We waited for awhile, but we were in no hurry and it was a nice day so we didn't mind. He brought us out a pork sandwich piled high with pork and wouldn't accept any money for it. The pork was tender, spicy, and delicious. The roll was thick and soft and better than just a regular wonder bread roll. The only thing that would have made it better is a little thicker sauce. We don't usually go out for BBQ, because my husband makes his own, but if we do, we will definitely be going here!

Was in louisville on vacation and searching for a great bbq. This is the place! Very generous portions and some of the best potato salad I have ever had. My 14 year old loved the pulled pork. Ate his and some of mine. Highly recommend this restaurant! If we pass through this area again, we will definitely stop.

The menu is short and sweet, but the items they do offer, are simply delicious!! I went today on a whim for lunch, and ordered it to go. I ordered pulled pork, baked beans and potato salad. The baked beans and potato salad tasted like classic Fourth of July to me. They were good on their own, as well as mixed together. I couldn't get over how creamy they potatoes were! (YUM) The meat was super tender and moist, and if you get their sauce on top, they are very liberal with the portion of scrumptious sauce for your meat! The only downside for me was that I ordered to go and wasn't given a set of cutlery... Thankfully I had some extra in my car, but otherwise I would've been outta luck! Super yummy, I can't wait to go again!!!

The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because of the cole slaw being pretty bland. A place can have great BBQ but the sides are what puts it over the top. That being said the other side I ordered (baked beans) were phenomenal. I've also heard the potato salad is great. Pretty typical BBQ prices. What makes it really worth it though is the portion size. Absolutely huge brisket sandwich. I wouldn't have been mad about paying $10 just for the sandwich. When you go up to order they have the meat sitting in its own juices, which makes it everything extremely juicy. They also have a pretty sturdy bun so it's not just mush as soon as you try and eat it. Definitely a must try.

Some of the best tasting, tender, BBQ I've ever had! Prices might seem a bit high, but certainly not when you consider the size of the portions and the quality of the product. I live in California and came home to visit my father, besides seeing my family this was the highlight of my trip!

Just want to say to John and the Family that our Kentucky Oaks Tailgate was great thanks, in large part, to the fantastic ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and sides. Our Philly friends said they'd never had better. And, after 3 years of BBQ at Oaks, RRBBQ is now firmly tradition with us. Thanks!! Melissa & Gregg from Wilmington, DE

The finest prime rib dinner served in a fine dining restaurant can't compare to River Road BBQs beef ribs....to die for! One rib is plenty for the average eater. Loved the potato salad too...but you have to like onions to enjoy it because it was loaded with fresh crunchy onions. I thought it was a little pricey for a carryout dinner, but when I got home and tasted the beef, it was worth it. Not located in the typical restaurant rows. Small place in a converted building. There are some tables inside to dine in. Order, pay, sit. Probably lots of carryout for dinner.

Yum. Yum. Yum. Cole slaw taste better then it looks. It's got a bit of red onion, a very nice touch. The potato salad is hearty and you could really taste the chives. I had the beef brisket. It was tender and had the right amount of fat. The bread is very soft and the sauce was sweet and savory . They lost one star because I would love to have some spicy options. But other then that it was delicious. The restaurant is clean, neat, modern, and simple. Would come again.

Just got home and had a wonderful meal with family. The BBQ was excellent and the sauce was surprisingly unique. We'll back back soon.
(5)Ron F.
Easily the best BBQ pulled pork and baked beans I've had in town and the potato salad is near perfect as well. The sauce they use on their meats rustles my jimmies in the best way possible.
(5)June R.
I have been here a few times to try everything. Pulled pork was juicy and smokey. Brisket was way overcooked. It was more like pot roast. Not that smokey. It was cut an inch think and fell apart. That is not good in the bbq world. I don't expect competition level bbq, but that was too much. Tasted ok though. Ribs were inconsistent. One was "fall off the bone" aka overcooked, another was perfect and the other was tough. All were tasteless. Sauce is sweet. Sides were average. Overall it was average. The pork was definitely the winner though.

People! You gotta try this guys BBQ! I'm not going to ramble on this one but seriously this is good BBQ. My son and I went today and had the brisket sandwich. HUGE pcs of meat, not slices or shredded. Owner came to table to see what we thought and then returned with a sample of the point for us to try. It was unbelievable. 5 stars all the way buddy!! BRAVO.
(5)Bruce J.
I will go back and try again bit my food was tough and bland. The rib tips were Inedible and brisket was only edible by cutting it in small pieces. The sauce was okay. The sides were average. I must have gone there on an off day from all the other reviews I see here

Great food. We had the pulled pork and the brisket. Let me just say that this is the ONLY place in Kentuckiania that I have been given a ton of brisket meat and not much fat!!! I know all you people out there that say that the fat is the best part, well that disgusts me and I only like a little to give it a flavor kick not half the dang sandwich. This place does it right and I will be back for more. Now, for the sauce. It is really good. It is spicy! So be careful. The sauce is thinner that most BBQ sauces but it is really good. Remember that this is a carry out place. There are no tables inside to sit and eat.

The absolute best BBQ I've had in a long time! Tender, smokey, sweet, with just enough spice!! Don't overlook this place...
(5)Meg O.
The brisket was so delicious that it didn't even need the BBQ sauce. I got so much meat on my sandwich that I was able to save half of it for later. The staff is friendly and I was helped right away!
(5)Matthew G.
This is by far the best brisket in town. The beans are equally amazing. They have other sides and meats as well. I just go straight to the brisket and beans because it's just that darn good. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is always clean. If you are unsure about this place, I would recommend that you try it at least once and decide what you think afterwords. This is a true hidden bbq gem. One perk is that if your on lunch break or just stoping for a bite to eat they have a recently added sitting area to dine in. I hope this helps anyone who is reading this.

Five stars for the meat and sauce!!! Some of the best pulled pork I have ever had and the sauce is the perfect balance of heat and vinegar. The baked beans are also excellent. The only thing I was kind of disappointed with was the potato salad because it was just too much mayo. However, overall I would highly recommend this to anyone that loves good BBQ!

Amazing BBQ sandwiches. This is a hidden gem! Came here after a cycling event at the nearby park. I tried both the pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, and they were both brilliant. The meat was buttery soft, and was served on a white bread roll. The sides were nothing much to write home about, but the sandwich made up for it. Best BBQ I've ever had!

While visiting a friend in Louisville we ventured off after dinner see the sights of this great city. On the way back to his house I noticed the two smokers outside of this unassuming carry-out. On the way to the airport 2 days later he insisted we stop and buy some BBQ for me to take back home. I ordered a side of rib tips for a snack while I was waiting for my plane and some pulled pork and brisket to eat when I got back home that evening. What a great idea. My wife and I are both crazy for great smoked BBQ and this was the best we have ever had. I knew at the airport this was something special. I devoured the rib tips and spicy sauce in mere minutes. They were smokey and flavorful. I could not wait for that plane to land and get home to warm my other purchases. The brisket was the leanest, most flavorfull brisket we ever had. The pulled pork was its equal and was moist and full of bark. Smokey, Spicy, Tangy. Yum, Yum If I lived in Louisville this would my go to place every week. We are now discussing a trip just for another meal.

Just kinda stumbled onto this place the other day. I'm visiting for the holidays from Seattle, but grew up in Indy. This place is awesome. I didn't expect to be buying BBQ so I didn't have much cash on me. I bought a pound of their brisket, and man-oh-man, is that good stuff. The BBQ is right out front and those folks know how to use it. The brisket was so tender if just fell apart. ( I couldn't resist so just grabbed it with my fingers.) It's cooked to perfection and tastes fantastic just as it is. Their sauce is good to, but not what I would call "traditional" bbq sauce. It's thinner, and not as, I don't know, it's hard to describe. It isn't bad, it just isn't what I think of when I think of BBQ sauce. I found myself just dipping my finger into it to taste it, over and over, so it's good. Got a bit of a kick, but it comes in a bit late, which I like. This is a small place with no seating but tons of open park space nearby. I hope they can stay in business because they know what they are doing and it's very good. Check 'em out!

One of my biggest pet peeves with most BBQ restaurants is their complete lack of dedication to delicious side dishes--this is so not true at River Road BBQ! The cole slaw is crisp, flavorful, and full of large shreds of cabbage and red onion; the baked beans are loaded with a meaty barbecue flavor and can make a meal in and of themselves. The meat itself is tender, smokey, and delightfully accompanied by a rich sauce that is sure to please any BBQ afficionado. A Sandwich makes a great lunch, but a family dinner here is satisfying and affordable!

The BBQ was amazing. My girlfriend had the pulled pork and I had the brisket. Both were delicious and the staff was friendly. There is no seating though so be prepared for take out. Though there are lots of parks you could eat at nearby.
(5)Mark A.
Enjoyed a beef brisket sandwich. Very good smoke flavor with nice sauce. Coleslaw was vinegar based and an excellent compliment. Beans were the best, not too sweet or too tangy. I'm a fan. Would be 5 star if they had picnic tables or somewhere to sit and eat. The drive to my hotel was torture...

Fantastic bbq and better service...there were around 20 people in line when I got there on a Monday afternoon and they had us out of there in 10 minutes...The brisket and pork sandwiches were outstanding and the potato salad and baked beans were excellent as well...They are right there with FABD as best in Louisville!
