This is my favorite place in Louisville for sushi. I have been going here when they were in the tiny place on Bardstown Road wit on or two sushi chefs. Now they have moved to their current location Taylorsville Rd where they have just expanded into a new section. That by itself tells you that this place is popular. I go here at least once a week. I took my sister here from the San Francisco Bay area and she tells me the sushi is as good here as anyplace there. She was also amazed how reasonable the prices are too. It is always hard to decide on what to get because it is all so good. I pick from the speciality rolls menu. This place used to be my secret but not anymore. If you go once you will be hooked. Good job guys!

Oishii is a safe choice for sushi, but neither the menu or the location is very inspiring. I'm giving it three stars because it was average (I would give it a C+ if this was its report card). The house salad and Crunch Munch roll I had during a recent lunch were fairly satisfying and served promptly. But, I didn't leave wanting to immediately review or share photos with friends. Nothing made Oishii stand out in my mind. The Taylorsville Rd location is nondescript, I even drove past it the first time I visited. The interior is open concept with a sushi counter against one side and several TVs mounted on opposite walls. The noise level can be quite loud during busy times. Two of us ordered house salads and the other went for edamame. The salads were the typical iceberg lettuce with ginger dressing. The edamame was a sizable bowl of warm pods with salt. Tasted fine - nothing special. One colleague got her spider roll several minutes before the rest of us. The other two rolls came out at the same time, thankfully. The sushi was cut large and had a good portion of ingredients. I thought the spicy crab in my dish was somewhat bland compared to same roll at other local spots. Again, food was as described, but not exceptional. We had originally chosen Dragon King's Daughter for lunch, but they were closed (as it was a Tues). We opted for Oishii as it was near by and open for lunch. With a tab around $15 per person, the meal was filling, but it didn't come close to DKD. With so many sushi places in Louisville, I don't see me choosing Oishii again soon.

This is one of my absolute favorite sushi places in town. The rolls are so fresh and have such big pieces of fish. Definitely the best quality that I have found. I've been here more times than I can count and have rarely had any problems. The service tonight, however, was a little lacking. Our main server was very friendly, but the people delivering the food to our table were not. They didn't tell us which rolls were which - only confusing because this time we actually got something different (shocking!). I got up and grabbed an extra menu from the front for us to reference, only for it to quickly be taken away by one of the servers. They also gave us our checks very quickly and we felt like we were being shooed out, even though it was not very busy. All of the little irritations aside, I would highly recommend this place to anyone. The cardinal roll and the volcano roll are so yummy. And the firecracker is a deal at $6. Yum!!!

It's great that they expand but they need to have better service. After 272892 dining in...the service slowly goes down. Tonight has to be the worse. There no where on their menu that auto grat if so amount are in. We were there with only 7 people. (Regular customers) yet they had to put an 18% on it. Not once did they ask if everything is okay. And if you are going to grat someone. DO TELL THEM YOU ARE PUTTING GRATUITY BEFORE THEY EVEN TIP YOU CORRECTLY. Way to lose your customers.

My favorite sushi place! I have been an Oishii lover for approximately 7 years now, going back to when a few of my friends and I discovered the old Bardstown road location in high school. It has never disappointed me! I tend to be drawn to the fruity rolls (the happy roll, aloha roll, Hawaiian roll, Oishii roll, palm beach roll, and highland roll have all treated me well). The Derby Roll seems like it has everything you could possibly put in a sushi roll in it. It is HUGE and delicious and nearly impossible to eat with chopsticks (but that's a fun challenge for yourself, haha). The ginger salad is great here, and I like to save my leftover dressing to dip my sushi in (the fruity rolls pair well with the ginger dressing!). Love love love Oishii!

I love this place. Love, love! They've recently expanded and it was a much needed thing. Tons of space to serve many more sushi lovers. And the cool thing? Quality and time is not effected by this expansion. Our sushi still came super quick on a busy night. $1 sake night even!! They never fail to deliver. Great quality and super friendly on the budget ... a complete win, win. We ordered sake, Kirin, green tea, 5 rolls, and two sashimi orders: all for $68 bucks. Everything was fresh and so delicious and I can't wait until my next sushi fix ... Because I definitely know where I'm going

After 6 months of being in Louisville, I finally made it here. I live less than a mile away and I heard this place was great, so I was excited school was out and I could visit. So, I ordered two rolls - the 2 in 1 and the crunchy (possibly crispy) roll. I was alone so I sat at the sushi bar. Place was packed, so I was excited. Unfortunately... I wasn't that impressed. Idk if I chose poorly or if they are overly thrilled about their eel sauce, but both my rolls were drenched. So much so they didn't hold together after one bite. This disappointed me because I always bite once then dip in my soy sauce mix. Now, the overall taste of the rolls were good, but the sweet eel sauce was just too much for my pallette. Did I mention the flies? Now I am Caribbean and I know fish attracts flies, but the flies/nats made my experience annoying. I would like to try them again, but no guarantee.

Best sushi and customer service! I loved the derby roll! I can't list all the ingredients because this roll was stuffed! Definitely a 2-3 bite sushi piece. The shrimp fried rice was also delicious and a very generous portion! Our server was excellent and even brought out sauce options to try when I asked for spicy mayo.

I think this is the best value for money to be found on the L'ville sushi scene (which, to be fair, isn't much of a scene), particularly if rolls are your thing. The menu of oddly-named and randomly categorized maki is a little overwhelming, so parsing the offerings to figure out what you might want take awhile, but everything I've tried has been fresh, tasty, and ample. I also like the convenient location across from Bowman Field, where parking and traffic are not likely to be an issue. And then there's the $1 sake on Tuesday nights...

  • Rick M.

Very nice space. Friendly staff and very clean. I love maki. They have a huge selection. The fish was fresh and the flavor was there. My problem was with the execution. The pieces were uneven in size. What they did have in common was that they were huge pieces. Too big to fit in your mouth. The choice was to hold a piece with your chopsticks and bite through the nori. I tried this and the piece fell apart all over my plate. The other option was to pull fish out of the roll and eat these until the whole piece was small enough to fit in your mouth. This detracts from the experience. I could not figure out a graceful way to eat this roll. I asked both the waitress and the sushi chef about the size of the pieces. The waitress took it as a point of pride that there maki was bigger than anyone else's. When I commented that is was difficult to eat, the chef just looked at me as if I was crazy and walked away. Next time I'll get nigiri or sashimi. It all looked good as it went by.

I like Oishii. They are very reasonable compared to most other sushi places in town. Firecracker roll: delicious and cheap! Only 6 bucks. Hawaii roll: my favorite of the night. Mango on top, shrimp, asparagus, cream cheese and avocado I believe. Yum yum! Derby roll: very good, you need a fork for this one it is large!

    (4)
  • Zachary H.

I can dig it. The rolls weren't put together that well if you care about that sort of thing; they were all falling apart a bit. However, everything tasted really good which is all I really care about. The portions were large, one roll was just about filling. Ended up splitting a derby roll, cardinal roll, and one with mango on top from the specials menu. I'd recommend any of them, even "the one with mango on top that was on the specials menu that one time on a Tuesday."

I love this place! Yummy sushi with affordable prices and a great staff. I've gotten every one of their fried sushi rolls and have never been disappointed. They renovated within the last year to accommodate their growing clientele, and I'm impressed! I highly recommend.

Wow! This was a surprise. We got a to go order while we were in South Louisville for a travel team little league tournament. We ordered about nine rolls for the group. They were HUGE! This was a crazy amount of sushi and all of it was really good. If I lived in Louisville, I would go here all the time. And, the large sake is a TEAPOT full of sake. Go now!

  • Olga I.

Dined with a large group for a special occasion and it was nice. Not knock your socks off great service but got our food to us quickly, surprisingly for such a large party. The sushi is always creative and the pieces are larger then any other sushi restaurant I've visited.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how fresh the tuna was here for being so far inland so to speak. It was delicious! I got the Lexington and Spicy Tuna rolls. Both were good sized and appropriately priced for the quality and size at $7.50 each. I will definitely be returning to try the Volcano roll and many others. Service was ok too but we hit the restaurant at a peak time. I'm sure it would be better if there weren't about a hundred people ordering at the same time.

The best sushi in Louisville. I am a huge fan of Nigiri and Oishii gives you the biggest slices of fish you can imagine. Actually, all their rolls are very large (almost too large!) and delicious. Staff is attentive. Expect a wait around dinner, but last I was there I saw they had expanded to make more room.

Service was fast and friendly! The food was impeccable!!!!!!! It was packed but we still didn't have to wait at all. So far, the best sushi I have had in Louisville!!! Try it!

Again back in louisville at Oishii Sushi. The rolls are large, but not just all rice as some place do. The fish are large chunk size. Also had the shrimp teriyaki and was very tasty!

I am not one who runs to grab sushi. I like it fine, but never know what to get! So one of my coworkers decided this is where she wanted to take us and we HAD to go there. Apparently she is a regular because even thee owner came out to talk to her. It was super nice. I enjoyed all the sushi that we ordered. I got the Derby roll, it was amazing! No need for pictures, since I made my decision based upon pictures posted to yelp already! I was very pleased with my experience, and hope to return sometime, not sure if I will venture out and try anything new, because I just am not sure!!! Also let me say that the eel sauce, was AMAZING!

Oh, Oishii, I love you but Monday night's experience has soured me a bit and we might need to take a break. This was the first time I've been in since they added on next door. We came in and just about every table was occupied but they had the same amount of people working, which meant they were severely understaffed. I didn't see any familiar faces in terms of waitstaff which could've been why service was less than stellar as they're just learning. We waited about 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge us to put down our name along with the growing number of people coming in the door. We were seated and we waited... and waited... and waited... Cue to about 10 minutes later... A lady who turned out to be our server, who had two waters in her hand, asked the boyfriend if he was the one who requested water. We said "No, but we'll take them!" She sat a water down for him but took off with the other one. Uh, ok. I'm not here or anything. I'd say it was at least another 10-15 minutes later I finally got to order a drink and we placed our order. The boyfriend had to stop her from running away because she took what we wrote on the sushi slip as what we wanted, she made a face in frustration like "really?!" and wrote down the salad and appetizer he wanted. You know, you can say what you want after people leave and you can think them, but it's very rude to be frustrated with the customer where they can see it, especially when the customers have been patient. There was a big party in our section that was definitely getting much more attention than we were in terms of refills. The boyfriend finally got a refill but it wasn't even a full one. The food came out quickly but my water continued to remain empty during the duration of eating despite being told she would get me one. We really didn't see our waitress very much but the few times we saw her she wasn't very polite with us. I understand being overwhelmed by last night but at least be nice. I am usually a solid 20% tipper, more if service is good, but I don't think we even left 10%. This makes me feel like a jerk typing this out but we really didn't feel as though we were taken care of or appreciated by the attitude of our waitress. If she would've been remotely nice we could've looked past the lack of service. We'll probably go back again next month but if service was anything like last night, we'll be looking for a new favorite sushi restaurant. Which is very disappointing because we love their food. :(

My favorite place to eat sushi in town. I always check the chalkboard for the day's special rolls. Crunch & Munch is my favorite. I always like to get a green salad and top it with a seaweed salad - an excellent add-on to any meal here. I appreciate the friendly staff & Fresh ingredients. The parking can be a challenge but not too bad as long as you mind the posted signs.

Best sushi place in Louisville hands down. The quality of fish is superb and they have significantly larger rolls than any other sushi place I've been to. My top rolls from Oishii: -CB Roll -Hot & Spicy Roll -Crunch Munch Roll -Crazy Eel Roll -Boston Roll -Koi Roll

Not sure where to start... I just love this place. Every roll I Have tried has been exceptional. The miso soup is wonderful and the location is great for work and weekends. If you want some guaranteed fresh sushi you have to try this place out. Tell them Jame spent you, Jk, don't do that they might not let you in.

Sushi in Louisville is getting better and better and Oishii may be resting on their laurels? The rolls did not generate that "ahhhhh" that other restaurants are now achieving. The crunch munch roll looked pretty but the spicy crab with shrimp is not spicy and suffers from a "mish/mosh" of too much mayo and also way too many tempura flakes. The Geiza Roll was tasty but the avocado on the outside was too mushy and didn't taste fresh. The simple salmon roll was about the best, nice and fresh. I think it is time that we begin to demand outstanding sushi. This was not outstanding at all...the flavors all melded together. Restaurants, please...when ordering spicy...it should burn!!!!

Oishi Has the best Sushi in town! The Nigiri is the thickest and most usual cuts I have ever had. Their Salmon is melt in your mouth fat! Several rolls are unbelievable - My favorite is to end the meal with the Fruit Roll - combination of avocado, strawberry, banana, and rice. Only thing I wish were better is the Seaweed salad, wish it were a bit "fancier" just seaweed on iceberg, how about some jicama, and cucumbers? I make it to Oishi at least once a month!!! Might start doing take-out! Cost is about on parr with other places, Service is always prompt.

This was the first place I ever tried sushi and nothing has ever compared to it again. I stand firm that this is the best sushi in the Louisville area hands down. Today was the first time I got their carry out and was also extremely pleased.

Best sushi in Louisville, hands down. Words can't depict how amazing this place is. I stop in at least once a month. They've recently expanded and remodeled finally giving them enough seating. I'd recommend to anyone who loves sushi/sashimi. You won't be disappointed.

The sushi here is amazing! The service- not so great. We might have just been here on an off-day for the wait staff, but it was a Monday evening and they were definitely not slammed. We waited for about ten minutes to be greeted by a server/drink order taken. Then another ten minutes at least before our order was taken. The sushi did come out quickly. The portions were VERY generous. We ordered the amount of sushi we would normally order at other restaurants and it was way too much. Only giving this place three stars because of the service, but if I lived in Louisville I would give it another chance just because of how good the food was.

I read a ton of the reviews on yelp before going here and had some mixed feelings prior to going. My fiance and I are sushi fanatics, so sometimes when you read "beginner" sushi, you kind of think twice about the place. But after wasting an hour or so researching places, we decided to just go try it out. We were happily surprised. So to address the beginner sushi thing, the menu is definitely primarily rolls. There are options for sushi or sashimi, but I'm used to having sushi/sashimi combo boats or the like, so I can see why people have said that. But to the restaurant's defense, the sushi I did order had huge slices of fish. More than I have ever seen. So bonus points there. I did also read a couple of other reviews talking about the rolls having way too much sauce on them, and I do agree with this. A couple of the rolls would have been waayyy better if they weren't sitting in tons of sauce. The portions are large (like everyone has said) and it is true, each of the sushi roll bites need 2-3 bites and can hardly be done in one bite. So overall, I was satisfied and the reason I only gave 4 stars, was because there were not as many sashimi options and the rolls being doused in sauce. (Can't remember all the rolls I tried, but really whatever you pick, I'm sure will be fine)

Hands down best sushi I have had in Louisville! This place is great! Service: The service was wonderful and they were efficient, helpful and the food came out very fast. Ambience: Small space but it definitely has a cozy no frills about it atmosphere. Food: They have a wide variety of rolls on their menu. It looks like they have daily specials on their rolls and the one I had was DELICIOUS but sadly can't remember the name. The regular rolls are a very decent size and larger than most places so that was a plus! The edamame came out hot and perfectly salted as well. I DEFINITELY plan to go back to this gem of a sushi restaurant!

Best sushi joint in town, no questions. The prices are incredible, the service quick and attentive, and location great. We go about once a month, and we've never been disappointed. We commonly say that we're going to branch out and visit more sushi places, but we always end up at Oishii. Two words: Firecracker Roll. Don't question it, just order it. We sit at the bar, and the sushi chefs are fun to be around. Great crew, and great sushi!

There is a reason this place is always packed: the best sushi in Louisville. Ordinary sushi is good but a tad boring. Oishii sushi is art on your plate and tastes like heaven. Be sure to take a picture and share it before you tearfully tear into it. I've tried some of the others labeled "best in Louisville" but was very disappointed. I'll be hard pressed to betray my Oishii again. Decided to try Oishii but can't decide on which dish? Glad to help! My top three favorites in order of simple to amazing: Volcano Roll, Oishii Roll, & Thunder Over Louisville Roll. Enjoy!

The sushi is wonderful. There are a wide variety of rolls to choose from and the portions are very generous. Mu husband and I went and accidentally ordered way too much food. Oh well, the leftovers were great too. I cannot wait to go back. My only complaint is that the dining room is absolutely jam packed. You're right up on the other diners and it can difficult for the servers to maneuver. I think next time I go, I'll go at an off time (really early or really late).

This is definitely the best sushi place in Louisville. I ordered tuna roll and it included avocado. The tuna roll was chunky with Huge chunks of sashimi. It was always busy but we were seated quickly. My friend got the lobster roll and it was also a huge. Basically the portions of great. This place is definitely worth the try. Do not order much off the entrée menu. The dishes were overcooked. And use the wrong sauce for chicken Katsu. Only order sushi.

Very beginners friendly restaurant. Not authentic. A Very Americanized sushi joint, with extravagant rolls and the use of spicy tuna and asparagus in almost every roll. The quality of the fish is not something to brag about, but it doesn't take away the fact they taste good. The Tomago is store bought, and they don't serve Uni. I would recommend this place to someone trying sushi for the first time, however not for a someone looking for true authentic sushi. I do have to remember I am in Louisville, Kentucky....

Sushi used to be one of my very favorite out-to-eat meals. I'd never be brave enough to try it at home and I love the delicious flavors and sauces and the excitement of seeing them first come out. It has been quite awhile since I've had sushi (I actually can't recall the last time)...and was super pumped to go to Oishii. After frequently the Bardstown location several times, the last time I'd had it at the Taylorsville location it had been busy and not as memorable. That all changed last night and my love for sushi and Oishii was reignited. While I usually prefer the Bardstown area because its close to my home, I have to admit, the Taylorsville location provides much more seating. The walls are painted a calming blue, there are plenty of two tops that make meeting a friend for dinner super easy! There were several people there, but it wasn't crowded, for a Tuesday night around 7. Parking, however, was packed! I had the soup and salad and they did not disappoint! Rather standard, but also delicious! Salad seemed a little more onion-y than normal, but I love their dressing! In efforts to reduce calories, I ate half of both. The sushi rolls were served before I even finished my salad! Super quick! We split two - The Crunch Munch Roll and the Happy Roll. Crunch Munch Roll is a spicy tuna, shrimp and topped with tempura chips and spicy mayo. So good. While I like many other complex rolls, this simple roll is just one of my favorites! We also got the Happy Roll - pure heaven. Shrimp, aspargus, cream cheese, avacado, strawberries, nuts and eel sauce. The Chruch Munch roll is a mega one - almost too big for one bite (however, with practice you can achieve a piece per bite)! Give Oishii a try (and invite me along)! I've heard that oishii means delicious in Japanese. And they're not lying!

Oishii is always my preferred place for Oishii. The price is decent and the portion is good compared to the other places I've been to in Louisville. Taste, of course, is always up to par. I've always been happy with that I ordered. There's a good variety of rolls from fruity rolls to deep-fried rolls, for folks who aren't big fans of raw fish.

  • Janis C.

The Asian fusion rolls were very presentable, colorful and creative, and I love their generosity of the use in avocado, the more the better. I ordered the highland roll and spicy girl, and the culinary skills put on them were exquisite. Orangey yellow mango and light green avocado layers are a treat to the eyes. The derby roll was grand with a lavish amount of crab meat but it was too soggy from too much sauce. Maybe it's just me, but the texture of their rolls would all taste better if they could cut down on the soy sauce drizzled on them.

Oiishi is my go-to spot when the sushi cravings are out of control. I can get any of the standard sushi fare I want (for cheap) and the special rolls are fun. The presentations are beautiful and flavor combinations unique. You can call it 'Americanized' all you want but I prefer to see it as Oiishi using localized ingredients to create fresh, new combinations to pique your palate. We're landlocked in the middle of America. Sushi originated by the sea. Adapting to the world around you isn't a bad thing, especially for a food medium that requires fresh ingredients. Oiishi's use of sweeter ingredients like mango and strawberry in combination with traditionally used raw tuna, avocado and nori have helped me introduce my (then 5 year old) to sushi in a kid-friendly manner. We started off with the California and Philly rolls and worked our way up. We'll head to Oiishi on Bardstown for dinner (early evening, to beat the rush) and then maybe to Great Escape to check out comics or the Pie Kitchen for dessert. Win for both of us in a location that offers a little bit of everything. If you are a strict sushi traditionalist, Oiishi may not be your #1 spot. For "the rest of us" the ingredients are fresh, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is fun. PS - New news to me: they will create "to-go" orders for you, at lunchtime yesterday there were a steady stream of take-out orders. Good to know.

Oishii is my go to sushi spot. It has something for everyone from the sushi novice to the sushi connoisseur (for the record, I consider myself to be firmly in the middle!) The sashimi & nigiri is always very fresh and the maki & special rolls are enormous! The rolls are never overloaded with sauce and no matter what you order, it will be tasty. It is very reasonably priced, last time a friend and I went we had 4 rolls, a ginger salad (yum!), 2 glasses of wine and 3 beers. The check was only $74.00 and considering all of the food you get, that's a bargain! The inside of the restaurant is very small so order out or go early!

Pretty good sushi!! Service was great and fast. The restaurant is small so go early to get a spot because it fills up quick!

Rolls were too large to actually enjoy, ingredients were not fresh (some of the strawberries were essentially mush and some of the fish was so dried out it had a hard, chewy texture), some rolls were warm (meant to be cold) and the rice was poorly packed and tasted old. Essentially, while it's very filling and cheap, it's not a comfortable eating experience. Considering all the hype and positive reviews, my friend and I were both very disappointed. I'm not planning to go again in the future.

Crunch Munch roll was very tasty, with a nice balance of sweet and spicy. The tempura flakes were a tad stale, but you didn't notice unless you are like me and scoop them up separately. I ordered a roll and then changed my mind, but they had already made it; they were very nice about it and let me order a different one with no issues. I would come again.

Sush is a food group for me, and I am still working to have it included in the official food pyramid as such as I can justify how often I indulge in it. As such, I am always up for finding a new sushi place to try. Oishii has been a great find that hits the spot for those nights when I need some nori-maki to complete my day. I may leave each sushi outing feeling like a bird that ate too much rice from a wedding, but somehow it's worth it (is it true that too much rice does expand in your stomach causing it to explode and you to possibly die? I sure hope not, it would be a shame to miss out on all the sushi rolls I have yet to try) Situated conveniently across from Bowman Field, Oishii is a cozy joint with both a bar and tables for seating. I have never eaten at the bar, but I have still never had to wait for a table when I have gone. The menu includes both sushi rolls and non-sushi entrees. I usually start with miso soup, which is an affordable $1.50 here. Next I get to go bananas with the sushi, as its usually something I split with friends. We each choose a roll or two and share with one another. The Geisha roll, YumYum roll, Dragon roll and Spicy Tuna are ones we consistently order so I would recommend any of those as long as you like the components. Last time I was there my friend and I gaped at another table's amazing looking roll, which we were told is the "Randy Roll". We were almost tempted to order it in addition to what we had gotten, but somehow restrained ourselves for our next visit. With an affordable menu, convenient location and excellent maki, this is one place not to miss on your culinary adventures through the 'ville!

I love their sushi... Their hot tea not so much. The rolls are big and very filling... Most of all they are delicious! The yum yum and crunch munch are my favorite. The only negative thing I have to say is that if you show up 30 to 45 minutes before closing you get told they are closed. This has happened to me three times and really pisses me off. If they want to be closed earlier then they need to change their hours.

Oishi is hands down the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The prices are great, the rolls are big and taste great, the waiters are good at what they do. I live about 25 minutes away from Oishi but am more than willing to make the drive on a regular basis.

The food was good, but the service was just alright. My daughter ordered a sushi roll and my wife and i ordered entrees. the entrees cane out WAY before the rolls. So much so, we were almost done before the roll came out. we wish they had brought it all out together.

Well, how should I describe it? 1. Big Rolls. But we were not looking for little bit of fish in a whole bowl of rice, with mayo dressing. It's great if you like to get full on cheap sushi. 2. Rolls fell apart when we dipped them into our soy sauce- a sure sign of a lack of experience and trying to put too much stuffings into a sushi roll. 3. Fishy 4. Friendly staff, but cramped seating, and lack of atmosphere.

One of the best sushi places in town.Hard to say it's the best but it has to be mentioned if you are talking about the top 5. Place is kind of small, with super small tables for 2. We sat at the sushi bar which became a problem when all the food came out, but we managed. Miso soup came out hot, better than average I would say. House salad was just ok, dressing had good flavor but way too watery. Spring salad was huge, a full plate of salad. Nice touch with the tempura cream cheese balls and pear slices, there was plenty to take home. Fire cracker roll was the special, only 5.99 and it was awesome. Randy roll looked impressive but didn't do much for me,probably would be for a the fresh tuna lover because it had generous portion of fresh tuna. Crispy roll was also good, deep fried it came out hot and delicious. Our rolls came out so fast it was crazy, spaced out a few minutes apart to give us a chance to try a bite before the next one came. Also tried to fried rice with chicken, I would skip it next time, rice was ok chicken was dry and not very tasty. Not a bad roll so far and there were plenty we wanted to try. Definitely be back for more. I was a little skeptical when they opened, I figured a sushi place on Taylorsville road couldn't be good, well I was wrong. Lucky for us it is close to home, a new go to for sushi 5 minutes from home. Oh the best part, all this for under $50. I thought it was a steal and we have a snack for tomorrow with our two boxes we took home. Two of the roll were loosely rolled so they kind of fell apart which made eating them difficult, otherwise it would have been 5 stars. Well that and the super small tables.

Love this place. Great food, and they always take excellent care of my kid. Every time we come in she gets trainer sticks and a cartoon without having to ask for it. My favorite is the sashimi, but all of their rolls are great.

Best casual sushi place in Louisville!! I've tried to find another sushi bar that compares to Oishii in town and I keep coming up empty. Love this place - excellent value and very friendly staff!

  • Jason A.

Oishii is a good sushi option, though there location is now a bit outside of the highlands. The rolls are pretty creative and tasty. They're also quite large but a bit difficult to eat. I always go for the specials on the board by the bar. They've never disappointed.

  • Megan F.

I've thoroughly enjoyed just about every sushi roll I've eaten at Oishii, which is no where near the complete menu because I don't like cream cheese or mayo. There's one roll in particular I'd like to call attention to, which is the tofu and avocado roll. Pair that with the spicy salmon roll and you've got a filling meal for $12. Sometimes, I find it better to get two rolls instead of one specialty roll that I'd get tired of after 3 or 4 pieces. It is refreshing to see a sushi place have a unique pairing (at least in comparison to the other places I've been in Louisville) that is not a high-priced specialty roll...yes, I'm talking about that tofu and avocado roll again. Each piece of Oishii rolls are huge in comparison to other places, which can make for some awkward times trying to stuff the whole piece in your mouth while still leaving enough room to chew and swallow without it exploding onto the table. Too much detail?

My brothers buddy, Chris, had been going on and on about this being his favorite sushi place. I was not disappointed. I know that when one walks into any sushi establishment, there should NEVER be the smell of fish present or amonia (this tells me something is wrong with the fish-yuck),or bleach (this tells me something is being covered up). Well, walking in, there were no smells- it was a neutral smell and the tables were somewhat full. These are two good indicators. Our waiter was decent and when our sushi arrived, I was very pleased. The quality of the fish used was very good. The tuna, salmon, albacor-all firm pieces of fish, no funny smell, wrapped in delicious rice and seaweed. The sushi rolls are pretty large, which can be a bit of a put-off because one is supposed to stuff these things all at once into the mouth...but not with these monsters. These are two biters. My only complaint is they put spicy mayo on my roll-this is a very American thing to do to sushi and I do not suggest it. Enjoy the clean flavors of sushi. Yum.

We ordered two rolls and some sashimi. The one roll was a five piece super large roll. It fell apart the moment you picked it up. It was also drowning in teriyaki sauce. Our other roll was okay but the fish on top was chewy and inedible. The service was okay. For the size, you would think folks would be more attentive but we were passed up several times watching the waitress go back and forth from one table to the kitchen. I finally just flagged her down to order. I will most likely go back one more time just to test out some other rolls and maybe during dinner instead of lunch. So, for now, I'll give this place 3 stars but things might change (better or worse) on our second go-around.

Not my favorite in the 'Ville, but not bad. I can't really comment on the service, as we were there with a rather large party and it was kind of a free-for-all melee. Parking for the place *sucks* but I was lucky enough to find a spot in the lot. My rolls were pretty decent. They were priced the same as something I normally get at higher end sushi places. The Crunch Munch roll is a favorite of mine. The one here is literally covered in a pile of tempura flakes, which is unnecessary. I also got the Santa Roll. It is HUGE, but I like crab and tobiko so that's why I got it. If prices were different enough that it would save me money, this could possibly become my go-to place. But since the kind of rolls I get are pretty much equal in price at every place I go, I am more likely to go to my favorite places first. I wouldn't put up a fight, though, if I was going with other people and they wanted to come here.

Went here with my sister and husband recently. The service was really on the ball. I was impressed. We had one waiter and one waitress that both check in on us throughout the dining experience. They seem to be updating the menu as well. There is now a salmon fried rice. Also, there is a sheet given with the menu that includes the specials. Prior the specials were on the dry erase area by the suishi chefs. It was hard to see throughout the restaurant.

This is definitely the freshest and best sushi in town. Anyone who says that it's over priced has no idea what they are talking about. I was on the search for good sushi in Louisville after moving from Denver (yes, we're landlocked, but have some excellent sushi restaurants). I came here once last summer and wasn't wowed, but shared with people who ordered differently than me. So last Thursday when we decided we were in the mood for sushi, I figured we could give it another try. They have smaller and then specialty rolls and even the regular/smaller ones were huge and delicious for the price and typically those rolls are small and not as good. The spicy salmon or tuna with the jalapeno was one of our favs, crunch jalapeno and the fresh fish. Our specialty rolls were huge and overflowing with raw fish. The one we ordered had tuna inside and avocado and something on top, it was good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the sauces on it. My only complaint is that the majority of the rolls have cream cheese, mayo or tempura flakes and I'm a bit more of a purist when it comes to sushi.

I'll start by saying I'm a recent convert to sushi and I don't pretend to know what authentic sushi tastes like. As long as it tastes good, I'll come back.... and Oishii keeps me coming back and back again. The rolls are big, tastes good and cheap! As far as good restaurants go, that's all you need. I'm not a big fan of raw sushi yet, so my favorites are Hawaiian roll (topped with mango) and the Cardinal roll (topped with seared salmon). It's also a good place to take someone who never had sushi before, I took my coworker (who is in her 50s and never had sushi before) and she loved it!

Oishii is not the best Sushi in Louisville, but it certainly is the best bang for your buck. It took me ages to even try this gem due to the fact that it is closed between the hours of 2pm and 5pm. Now that it's location has moved to Taylorsville road it has more space than the Bardstown rd location. However, it is still packed full almost every time I go. My advice is this: Always order from the specialty roll menu. They are gigantic and are reasonably affordable between $9 and $12. My personal favorites are the Zen Roll and the Spicy Mary Roll. I also am a huge fan of the Pork Gyoza appetizer. You could argue that Oishii's rolls gain their large stature from an overuse of spicy crab, crunch and rice as filler. Regardless of these issues, I still call Oishi one of my favorite Sushi restaurants in Louisville.

Best sushi place in town. The food is high quality and the prices are moderate. Perhaps the location is a bit old, but I find it rather quaint. You can enjoy a nice meal and watch the planes on nearby Bowman Field take off. Parking admittedly lacking though.

Generous portions, awesome presentation and it's as fresh as any land-locked sushi restaurant I've been to. A new favorite of mine in Louisville!

After needing two trips to actually get a table, I was underwhelmed by Oishii. The small space is cozy, so I won't fault them for always being crowded. Once we were seated, the staff was very prompt and reasonably attentive - I couldn't believe how quickly our sushi was prepared. I might have scored them higher if I had skipped the list of special rolls. My yellow tail and green onion roll was wonderful. The pieces were generously sized, but still a reasonable portion. So thumbs up for the standard menu. Most of the offerings on the special menu contained mayo or cream cheese, and as I care for neither of those things, they were off my list. I did try the sunset roll, but I wasn't impressed. The notion of a california roll topped with salmon and lime sounded quite good, and the presentation was visually appealing. Unfortunately, the presentation was also considerably larger than my actual mouth. There was no way to enjoy the flavor combination as it was intended, because you either needed to take a bite so giant you could barely close your mouth around it, or eat the thing in sections. My companion's order was similarly oversized. Everything tasted good, but having to take apart and reassemble your food at the table seems kind of counter to what sushi is supposed to be about.

Out of all the sushi restaurants in town, I came here the most. They have really decent price for really big and fulfilling sushi rolls. I enjoyed most of the rolls there except for the Valentine roll that is ironically overpriced for the taste!! Anyway, the place was almost always crowded so there might be some waiting time, but the good thing is it doesn't take long to chow down all those yummy sushi so tables are cleared out quickly.

The thing about this place is the size of the rolls. Good value. A bit "ricey"...if you know what I mean.. But very good.

Best sushi in town, hands down! Their rolls are HUGE, and so good! I love their deep fried oishii roll! The prices are very reasonable, I usually get a roll for $9 and a ginger salad for $2. Only down side is that their building is TINY, it's only has about 7 tables, and is always packed when I go. I always wait though, it's worth it. It only feels a little awkward cause there's no place to stand while you wait, so you end up trying not to breath down people's neck while they're eating. They did just open a second location on taylorsville rd. And it is about 4 times the size. I've been there 3 times already and is just as good!

MR says ... way too much cream cheese MRS says... we're a regular here at Oishi Sushi because of the price your own sashimi. we like the freshness and portion of tuna, salmon and yellowtail sashimi. what we noticed though lately is the increasing number of sushi rolls with "cream cheese". i could understand the Philadelphia roll but why put cream cheese in aloha and derby roll? it gets a little bit too much sometimes. its like eating an italian dish smothered in butter! still, we like this place. reasonable price, great portion and friendly servers including the sushi crew.

My wife and I very much enjoyed our first visit to Oishii Sushi. We were invited by our friends after a night of performing for the Louisville Ballet. My wife had already eaten dinner earlier, but she did enjoy her dessert that I will get to later. I ordered the typical salmon and tuna sushi since I never really know what the things on the menu are. They were very good and fresh and enjoyable. My friends on the other hand were much more experienced in the realm and ordered some great choices. They ordered a hand roll that was very impressive. They also ordered a fried calamari sushi that was to die for. The other plate they ordered was a deep fried shrimp tempura roll that I could not believe was sushi. It was all so GOOD! Now to my wife's dessert. She ordered the mango ice cream that was made to look like a miniature mango sliced with tooth picks for picking it up and eating. She loved them. If I had one complaint about this place, it would have to be the decor or lack there of. There was nothing about this place that screamed Japan to me. With this level of sushi I would have liked a little more ambiance to set the scene.

Great Japanese food. Nothing fancy about the atmosphere, very plain almost cafeteria like. Not a fan of sushi so I can't comment on that but the yakisoba and crunchy rolls were good.

This place is way better than Sapporo. The fish is really fresh, the menu isn't overwhelming, and the atmosphere is way nicer. The sushi chefs are very nice and chat with you, but the waitress service is just okay. The price your own sashimi plate is awesome (for $15 we had about 20 pieces of sashimi, all very fresh). As for the rolls, there is way too much cream cheese in the special rolls. However, the rolls we tried (the crazy eel and the randy rolls) were both very good. There is also a lot of cooked fish in the rolls, but maybe that's what the clientele here requires. For me, I would like more fresh fish. There is also a lack of squid and octopus on the sushi/sashimi list, but again it may be the clientele doesn't support that. Overall a great place to try sushi.

LOVE this place! Good for lunch with friends(a small group of up to 4 for the Bardstown Rd store and larger groups for the new Taylorsville Rd. store). Each of you order a roll and then share. I do get the ginger salad as well just because I like to drink the juice out of the bowl. Yeah, I know I'm gross but I don't really care. I love the volcano roll and pretty much everything else. I did just try the new bigger version on Taylorsville Rd. the other night. It was good as well but I made the mistake of ordering two fried/cooked rolls for the HH and myself. Oops! Won't do that again. Definitely stick to the raw & super fresh sushi that I love. A roll is usually around $9 and it will FILL YOU UP! So with one roll, a drink and a salad I am usually looking at a $13 bill. You can easily get one roll and a water and keep it under $10! In fact just writing this is making me CRAVE some Oishii! Four stars instead of 5 because of the WAIT at either place being uncomfortable. (Bathroom hallway at Taylorsville and breathing on someone at Bardstown)

I will preface this review by saying that I am a sushi snob. After coming to Louisville to attend college from Hawaii (where I was born and raised) I was looking for a sushi place that was reasonably delicious. I was raised on fresh raw fish, rice, and nori. So when I found Oishii I wasn't expecting anything comparable to home --that just wouldn't be fair comparison to begin with. Keeping that in mind, I do really like this place and have been there several times. It is certainly a restaurant that is capable of satisfying a craving for sushi at reasonable prices. It is, however, more trendy/Americanized sushi. So for those of you expecting an authentic experience, you won't get it here. Traditional sushi is supposed to be simple, uncomplicated by many ingredients --the centerpiece should be the quality of the fish. They serve, what I consider, dressed up sushi to maybe make up for a lack of access to fresh, unfrozen fish. A lot of their specialty rolls (which are quite tasty) contain mayo or cream cheese, which I don't necessarily mind. The Cardinal Roll comes highly recommend, as does the house salad with miso dressing. I have not been brave enough to try their sashimi yet --that requires some quality Ahi that I am just not convinced they have access to. The establishment is small, but the wait (at least for me) has never been outrageous. The prices are also reasonable and every sushi roll I have tried, I have enjoyed. That said, the sushi is good --not excellent, not great --which is why I can only give it 3 stars.

I know I shouldn't be picky .. not being any fresh water and all. portions are pretty big. fish is kinda eh.. nori is kinda eh.. have had much better ingredients. the tuna seemed a bit old.. the texture was a bit off. the salmon wasn't terribly flavorful.

The joint is small and cozy, nothing fancy, employees are very nice but they tend to look tired because they are super busy. Sushi here is very cheap, the rolls are very big I recommend crunch munch roll and for appetizers their soft shell crab. They have one of the best house salads in town. If you order to go make sure you eat the sushi fast , the people are ver careful about getting the to go order correct. :)

Great value. I don't like fussy, over the top sushi rolls. This place has all those on their list, but I prefer to taste the fish and keep it simple. Sashimi plate can be ordered with $ amount and type of fish you prefer and has always been fresh with sizable portions. They have a cucumber wrapped roll sans rice that is crisp and refreshing. I typically order 'without sauce' since I find mayonnaise based dressing not to my liking. Decor is bland, but I don't really care since I feel the sushi here is such good quality and value.

  • Zach C.

This is an average sushi bar. The small size and set up is comfortable. Authentic is not a word I would use here. The specialty/designer/Americanized rolls are huge and are friendly to the non-seasoned sushi palate.

  • Lana R.

Can't believe everyone isn't giving this place 5 stars. It's small, yes...but the little hole-in-the-wall places are always the best! I've never really had to wait too long, and I've been here at least 5 times. Sushi is super fresh, rolls are large, without too much rice. My favorite is the Oishii roll (with strawberries) - minus the crab (don't eat it). Anything with salmon is delicious. Undoubtedly the best sushi place in Louisville. (My husband is a HUGE sushi snob, from the East Coast, and admits that this place is awesome...)

  • Alec P.

Not the best sushi you'll ever have but definitely the best in town, especially considering price and portion. It's super affordable and you get a huge roll. It's always really fresh and really tasty. I usually make a point to go at least once a week. However I will say that since they moved to the new location the service has declined, not saying it's bad, just not as good as it used to be.

  • Kyle M.

As it was mentioned before, this sushi joint is pretty much middle of the road. I went here for lunch several weeks ago, and ordered several rolls with a friend of mine. Although the name of the rolls escapes me at this moment, I recall the majority of them falling apart fairly easily. Then again, that may just be a style. A sushi aficionado I am not. What did stick out was any roll that contained mayo, contained way, way too much of it. Literally half the roll way mayonnaise. Kind of gross. Anyway, that was my one experience there. Your mileage may vary.

Quality and Simplicity! I do not go for Hoity Toity type places. If there could be a down-home sushi place, Oishii Sushi would be it. The prices are good, the serving size is large and the presentation is tasteful. The service is "down-home" as almost all the sushi chefs greet you as you come in the door (it is a small place after all). The atmosphere is quirky and no-thrills at the same time. Just a pleasant place to get quality sushi. Keep it simple and scrumptuous! Am I really talking about sushi?? :)

  • Jim G.

They are open for lunch which was a hole in Highlands-area sushi availability, and service is much better then. The sushi is good but not Sapporo-level good (but then again, it's nowhere near as expensive as Sapporo either). I went twice for dinner and first time sat at the bar service was good, but came back with a group late one night and service ground to a halt--they did give us a free entree to make up for it.

Meh. Was not impressed whatsoever in Oishii. I came here with a group of coworkers on a Friday afternoon for lunch. It is really popular, so very hard to get a table, and the service is pretty surly. The rolls are ginormous - very difficult to fit into your mouth in one bite, and everyone knows you can't really bite a roll piece in half without it falling apart. The best part of my meal was the tofu and avocado roll. The flavors were clean and fresh. The randy roll I got was schizophrenic with all of the sauces - the roll was sitting in a bed of sweet and sour sauce...really, like a 1/4 inch of sauce. Also, an obscene amount of spicy sauce and eel sauce drizzled over the top. They completely ruined the roll (moderation can be a good thing)! I attempted to eat the tuna across the top of the roll, but it had a fishy taste which turned me off - maybe it wasn't so fresh? For those that like the clean, simple, fresh flavors of sushi, in the traditional smaller portion size, Oishii may not be the place for you.

  • Shal V.

Went to the Taylorsville Road location for dinner tonight and was impressed with the sushi - great taste, lots of choices and very affordable. The place is small but can surprisingly accommodate a sizable crowd without seeming congested...so you don't have to worry about jabbing the person at the next table in the eye with your chopsticks! The sake was very good. The Chicken Katsu was just fried chicken with Panko breading and not much flavor but the peanut sauce that accompanied it was great for dipping the chicken. I've had better katsu elsewhere. Service was pretty good despite it being so busy. I'm definitely going back here.

When I was informed of this place I was a little weary by the outside appearance however I was very surprised. The food was excellent especially for the price generous portions, Compared to Sapporo it was better if you can get past the tight quarters and no drink menu. I would highly recommend!!

The last time I went to this place was a year ago. I went recently and was reminded of why it has been a year since the last visit. The fish is actually pretty fresh. However, it is pretty common knowledge among sushi folks that nigiri is supposed to be eaten in one bite. Oishii's is way too large to do so. Perhaps they're trying to give folks the appearance of value through large portions.. I don't know. I do know that sushi isn't about filling up, it is about the experience on the palate. Also, they served me an oyster roll with entirely too much cream cheese and, it was served before my nigiri, another no-no in the sushi world. The courses should progress from simple to complex. On top of all this, I waited 40 minutes for my food. To my best recollection, the food took way too long last year. There are a couple of positives: It was a nice and cozy atmosphere and, as mentioned before, the fish is pretty fresh. Anyway, unless I learn that they have changed their ways, I will only visit this place reluctantly.......by way of peer pressure.

I have found Oishii to be hit or miss. When they first opened it was great, then there was a little slump where their business was picking up and I think quality control slid a little, now they're getting better. The quality of the fish is good and their lighter rolls are great, but I find anything involving mayo or spicy mayo to be way too mayo-ey if you know what I mean. The fried oyster roll would be great with a lighter sauce, but the over gooeyness ruins it. Their tempura is great though, not too greasy. The staff is great and the take out pick up process is smooth - I've never had my order messed up here which I find occurs frequently at other sushi restaurants, even if the screw up is some missed avocado or something. It's biggest asset is said service and the fact that it's never that crowded, plus they have a bar to wait at or simply eat at if the tables are full.

You know when you go to a restaurant for the first time and your food is so damn good that you are 100% confident you needn't look any further for a better kind of its genre? Yep, that's Oishii. I do not feel compelled in the least to seek out better sushi in Lville. While everything we had was delicious and of ample size, I choose to focus this review on one thing. The Hamachi nigiri. I'm a bit of a yellowtail snob, getting buttery pieces that I can rave about maybe every 6th time of trying a new sushi restaurant. It's the one thing, that when absolutely fresh with no ocean skunk, will blow my mind. The pieces I had here were stellar quality. And the real bonus? You actually get TWO pieces for the price of one. The way the hamachi is cut is very generous and better priced than big city, big coast sushi. Please don't ever change this...

This a fabulous little sushi place that I frequent for takeout. The sushi rolls are huge and I inevitably order too much every time. They have the standard ginger house salads and all the good basic rolls. The fish is always fresh and I have not been disappointed yet. Its great sushi. For a good cheaper night of quality sushi or takeout, this place fits the bill!!

I love this place. It's very near my house and we have been 3 times in the past month. the fish is so fresh and the rolls are creative and tasty. I am not a fan of the mayo sauces but that's just me. The rolls are huge. We have finally learned that 1 roll per person is plenty. I recommend the wasabi (spicy crab, and tuna) and the sunshine (calif roll with salmon and lime on top). Yum.

  • Elizabeth S.

You definitely get every penny of what you pay to eat here...the rolls are huge and they are very generous with the amount of fish they put in the sushi. I can't believe the amount of food I got for 10 bucks. The sushi itself is amazing. Not really traditional, but very delicious. My only quam is the wait staff, but it would never stop me from going. It can be crowded and cold in there, but it's worth it. If you want to avoid this, just get takeout. So worth it.

I came here on a date. The waitress was rude, not helpful and slow. Once our order was finally taken we waited30 minutes beofre we cancelled our orders and left. What made the most mad about the siituation was that 3 other groups came in and ordered after us and got their food within 10-15 minutes. Not going back

Oishii is a great casual sushi restaurant. It is much cheaper than Sapporo, and the quality of the fish has always been excellent for me. I have had nothing but positive experiences at Oishii. The waitresses are pleasant and remember customers from past visits, and the chefs behind the counter stop and say hello and goodbye to customers entering and exiting. The price is very reasonable (I have always averaged less than $25 for two people, including a couple of beers). The space is small, but I have never had a problem getting a table.

A little cheaper than sapporo - not as cool - but pretty good overall.

I wanted to like this. I was along with JJ and I agree completely. Not good. Urbanspoon rates this one highly and I could not disagree more. Should have checked here first.

Easily the best Louisville has to offer in sushi. Prices are reasonable the quality is outstanding, the service has always been very quick and friendly. What amazes us about this wonderful place is that on even most basic sushi roll the flavors POP. If the food is the rason you go for susi , this is th place to go.

Their servers are friendly, but their food is not even worth trying. Their miso soup is like warm water with maybe a couple of flecks of seaweed and one tiny chunk of tofu. Their vegetable roll was covered in fish soaked seaweed salad, so not at all veggie friendly. My fiance didn't even like the vegetable roll much and was not impressed with his crab roll either.
