Quality of the food is more like 3 stars, but the service, location and view of the river easily bring this establishment up to a 4. I opted for the whitefish (baked) platter with a side salad and mac & cheese. It also came with onion rings and a hush puppy. Plenty of food for $11. The quality of food was fine. It wasn't anything that made me go "wow" but it wasn't disappointing. Sort of what you would expect. Mediocre beer selection, good drink specials, and the beer was served cold. I'd probably only go if the weather was nice and I could sit out on the patio.

If you're a seafood connoisseur, don't like throwing away money, and generally dislike eating crummy food...avoid this place. The service was incredibly friendly, but that sure don't feed them hunger pains. So evading the terrible food would be ideal. The environment is charming in a cliche nautical sort of way and the outdoor space is nicely situated alongside the riverfront. But I'd rather eat progresso chicken noodle soup versus trying this again. This King of fish should be dethroned...

My family loves to eat at KingFish! The atmosphere, the service, and the food are all excellent. The hush puppies are amazing (and they bring a basket full with your meals)! I always order the grilled tilapia, served on a bed of rice with veggies on the side. Although a bit on the oily side (I guess from the rice), I enjoy my meal every time. Hefty servings (like most restaurants), but delicious. The river views are very nice too.

Prepare yourself for lots of fried food! This is a fun old Louisville establishment right on the river where the hush puppies are fantastic and the atmosphere has unique character. I tried the basket of fried mini shrimp which comes with french fries and to which I added a side of (quite tasty) coleslaw. Had a half sweet, half unsweet iced tea which I thoroughly enjoyed, too. Go with friends! They're opening a new bar in February 2013.

The only reason I give this place two stars is because the server was very nice. The place has sooooo much potential to be a really good restaurant. It has location, space, and a little old fashion charm; but the food. The food is the worst I have ever had. The cole slaw was ok. The prices were really good but I would prefer to pay a little more for better quality and taste. Everything taste really old as if they were using old grease or the pans were dirty something (we did not get sick). The place needed to be cleaned by professional cleaners, there were spider webs on the light fixtures and dust that could be cut with a butter knife. All of this and they have an A rating posted on the door. Not sure how that happened; maybe the rater is a relative. I want to see this place thrive and we return to Louisville I will drive by to see if anything has changed, but as it stands I would not suggest eating at this place until they clean it up or it is purchased by some wealthy person that appreciates good food.

"I must still mention the friendly and efficient server." That's what I kept repeating to myself while I write this. From the other Yelp reviews, I knew the food was not the star here. But I thought the balmy weather that evening on the river could make me overlook the food...I was SO WRONG!! Everything else about this Kingfish is just: dry, hard, tasteless and yucky!!! The seafood platter looked normal enough...but the breading was tasteless; the seafood were over-fried; the oysters were previously frozen...I have had better fried oysters from Long John Silvers! In fact, the platter was so unappetizing, I did not even have the desire to try that wet mushy puck of a "crab" cake. And that outdoor space...sigh...it was not open to diners that evening due to a biker rally!!!! The band outside was so very loud, the smoking was so very prevalent...we could not even enjoy the evening breeze...sigh... Save your money and go to The Fish House for the tasty fried fish and non-annoying view of Winter Ave.

Went for lunch. I stick with the white fish sandwich and fries. This kingfish always gives you hush puppies while the one in Indiana doesn't. Not sure why but I don't look a gift horse in the mouth and slap it. The fish is OK. The buffalo shrimp appetizer is something to try. Not much heat but good flavor.

Ten years ago and even longer, this used to be a great place for fried seafood. I remember going to the River Road location often with my great grandmother and family when I was 10 to 12. They had great salads with homemade bleu cheese dressing, and an awesome seafood platter. Later on, I would take my wife to the Bardstown Rd location, and it was great food there, too. Everything started going south when the Bardstown Rd location closed up shop. I noticed quickly that they were cutting corners all over the place. I tried the Hurstbourne location, got horrible service with crappy food, and swore off the place. I thought it was just that one location, so I tried again with the source: River Rd. Twice, I have been here, and twice has been roughly the same experience. It's not one thing or another, but just an "across the board" cut in the quality (and quantity) of the food. The one thing that hasn't been cut has been the price. It's overpriced for what amounts to the same kind of experience I'd expect from Captain D's. Even the condiments come from Sysco packets, instead of bottles. Both times, one lunch and one on frelling Valentine's Day dinner, the place has been totally empty. Let me repeat that: one of the biggest dinner nights of the year had a grand total of one couple at the main River Rd location. And the service/food still sucked. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I'd expect this whole place to shut down within 5 years, which is sad for such an once iconic place in Louisville. If you want a good fried seafood experience, go to Mike Linnig's. Avoid these places like the plague.

Awesome place to get some great seafood! The hush puppies are amazing, as is the shrimp. Lots of options, from fried to grilled, something for everyone! If you're bringing a larger group, then you might want to try "The Barge", which is basically a little bit of everything! Average priced for what it is, so a great place to take the family, also, they accept restaurant.com gift certificates.

I LOVE the view/outdoor atmosphere. The food is about a 3 star on its own merit overall though. Sadly the items I feel they do best aren't even seafood. Their chicken fingers, fried mushrooms and hushpuppies are all delicious but usually these aren't things you'd go to a FISH restaurant for. But to be honest, if you are an average person from the area, you'll probably find little fault with the food. I mean it isn't horrid... just average. The defining reason to come to Kingfish at this location is to enjoy a lazy day on the patio watching the river. The Jeffersonville, IN location is also scenic but in a city life way versus a country day kind of way. The service hasn't been bad during any visit but it hasn't been amazing either. I still say GO. Just know you aren't going to be blown away by their seafood/fish. It's about relaxing on the patio on a warm breezy day watching the wind blow and the water ripple.

I give this place 1 star better than Joe's crab shack. The food is ok--a step up from Captain D's. But if you're craving that kind of food, then this is a great place to go. The wait staff was very friendly, and it was nice to get a window table to be able to look out on the river. Home cooking. Will go there again.

I was not impressed. Wish I was but I came out disappointed b/c it's supposed to be a seafood place but it just seemed like a restaurant that serves cheap fast food. I from Cincinnati, OH & I was visiting relatives who all raved about this place. So, naturally I was really excited about this great seafood place with a great view of the river. We were seated right away & got there before the diner rush, so our drinks and food orders went right in. This is when the experience went south. It took awhile for the drinks & hush puppy basket to be brought to our table. The waiter was nice and pleasant, I think it was more of a kitchen wait than bad service as he kept walking by our table checking. Then while waiting for food the sun was setting & blinded half the restaurant. Patrons had to hold up arms or menu's to block the sun b/c they don't have the shade curtains that block the sun but also let you see out. Finally the food arrived and it looked good but the sides tasted better than the actual seafood. I ordered the create your own platter with boom boom shrimp & crab cakes with green beans & rice pilaf. The boom boom shrimp was ok but the crab cakes had no crab in them at all & we're pretty small. It was all filler & not good filler at that. I believe the crab cakes were supposed to be a signature item (pass on this b/c anyone can make a fried ball & pay less money). I just filled up on the green beans and rice b/c the seafood was lacking the fish & flavor. What really put the nail in the coffin for me was when we were attacked by flies while we were eating & then while waiting for our checks. They were everywhere and then I just had to stop eating at that point b/c it was too much. I would have really liked to give them more stars since my family loved this place but it didn't come close to the seafood restaurants I've been too. Heck, Captain D's or Long John Silver's would have been better. This place needs some improvements and a new cook & then they might see better reviews.

I love this place, but had the worst waitress ever!! She had to of been half deaf, cause we only got a third of what we ordered. Forgot all the sides, salad came after the meal, and asked if my dad was sure he ordered french fries (are you serious?? pretty sure he knows what he wanted). This lady looked like she was chewing on her tongue the whole time, she looked oily and was the rudest, nastiest woman I have come across in a long time! Pretty sure she probably tried to steal his credit card number too! Omg!! She was dreadful. Steer clear of the waitress with the slicked back ponytail pulled back so tight I think it was squeezing any bit of intelligence she had right out of her head!!

We used to split our time between the Kingfish on Bardstown Road across from Showcase Cinemas (which is now an infernal Starbucks across from a vacant lot) and the one on Zorn. The Bardstown Road for after church, and Zorn for birthdays. Decor and so-so service aside, for any Louisvillian, this is a place to talk about memories of when you ate at Kingfish. Getting to watch the barges float by is a total plus. Also a good place to meet for first dates, especially in the spring and summer because you can sit at the outside bar and chat all while soaking in that river atmosphere.

Best hush puppies anywhere!.... great service and their pineapple upside down cake martini taste just like one. The fish was a little dry. The view is wonderful.

Not too bad, but the selection was between deep fried anything or grilled or blackened fish. I got the sampler platter and the fish and shrimp platter for lunch. The fish was pretty dry and the shrimp was not very good. I also found something black on the side of my shrimp, that wasn't exactly like a vein. Pretty gross. I asked for the dressing on the side and it came on top. Gray balsamic vinegarette. Not good. I also tried the chicken strips which were actually pretty good. Go figger, at a seafood place, that was probably the best thing. Not going back.

Bad service can strike anywhere, anytime... even at your favorite place. It happens. Honestly, I was surprised to see a handful of bad reviews for this restaurant. For me, when I am in the mood for King Fish, this is THE location I want to go do. Though clean, the decor has that late 70s medieval look. It could scare some folks off. In a way, the decor is old enough, it has a retro feel to it. In any event, the location on the river is great... plenty of good views. So far, each time I have visited THIS seafood restaurant, the service and food has been excellent! I can't say the same for other locations.

The only redeeming factor is the river view. Was there on June14 at 8:30pm. Sat on the covered deck behind the bar. The fried sampler was under-cooked and mostly cold. Same for the fries. My cole slaw sat for 10 minutes while I waited for silverware. Agree with others, good hushpuppies. Conditions were similar last time I was here last year. People just like the water I suppose. Server appeared to have only one or two other tables.

I've been dragged to Kingfish since I was knee-high to a toadstool, so I have a bit of nostalgia for this location. The big captain's chair in the waiting room, the raised area where the smoking area used to be, the patio with that great view of the diseased Ohio River. All things that make me feel like a little kid again. I went with my parents this weekend hoping to recount some of my glory days of not having to make decisions or pay income tax. Our waiter was very pleasant and responsive, although they weren't very busy. It was just 11:30 am the day after Derby, so I'm sure folks were staying home sleeping off a few hangovers. Hushpuppies were provided instead of rolls, which I appreciated. They were a little dry. I probably should have requested some tartar sauce although ketchup worked pretty well. I ordered the Spicy Cod Strips sandwich, which was just breaded and fried cod with "Boom Boom sauce." This is some good sauce... I'm not exactly sure what it is, but I feel like I've seen this orange goo at some sushi bars in the past. It came with some slaw (a little bland, but it had some subtle heat to it) and a ton of (unsalted but crispy) fries. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't substitute out the sides for any other options, but it was decent. The sandwich bread was particularly surprising as well. It looked kind of plain, but it had a surprising sweetness to it. Overall, my meal cost about $11 (no drink- I ordered water). I could probably get a better meal for less somewhere else, but it's hard to put a price tag on that nostalgia.

This place is amazing. Everyone I take here is impressed with the view as well as the food. The prices are excellent for what you get. Even though it is a seafood restaurant and the fish is great, they have the best chicken strips I've ever tasted! I go here frequently and have never been disappointed! Definitely give it a try!!!

Kingfish is the kind of restaurant that makes me wish Yelp had half stars. My in-laws love this place, so I've been there a few times. Service has always been decent, but I just don't care for the food. It's bland, plain fried food. I feel bad giving them two stars, but I just can't rate them higher due to the flavorless fare.

Had lunch at Kingfish. Tried fish and chips and the first order the fish wasn't good at all. So I sent it back for another try. That order was over cooked and I could not eat. Now this was supposed to be a top notch place to dine in Louisville. Don't think I'll return.

Average, but not memorable, someone please tell the chef, salt and pepper need to be used, plain taste corn meal on everything which isn't bad if you season it. Thought this place would be better, sadly disappointed, try harder.

Nostalgia is the reason I chose KF for my mother's birthday, but each rare time we go the service is worse and the quality of the food is becoming unbearable. The waitress was over extended x10 because they're so short staffed, so we only got two refills. The waitress was nice, but just couldn't keep up. We won't be back unless it's at someone else's chosing.

Fast seating, good timing on salads and drinks. Food was incredibly slow and the waiter wouldn't look at us half the time. The busboy came and randomly started taking our little plates and cups before we even got the main meal. Had to chase down our waiter for the check and some patent let their little boy run around yelling hello at us. In their defense, there was a severe thunderstorm and big crowds of people which they claimed was slowing the food service down.

Horrible experience!!!!!! The only thing decent was the food. Our waitress was awful and there was a fight between employees inside the store that continued outside while we were there. We went for 30+ mins without seeing our waitress and without refills. After complaining to management I was assured things would get better. However, our waitress came to our table to ask about dessert. Still no refills. Then brought our desserts and told us she would bring our checks and to-go cups. 20 mins later, nothing! Then we went outside to enjoy the playground with our 2 yr old. When walking past the carry out section we were warned by several patrons to avoid it because of a fight. That fight soon carried over to outside. We couldn't leave fast enough!!!!

Lame. Food was tasteless and not seasoned at all. Hush puppies look amazing but they taste like grease. Food wasn't hot when it arrived and I had to dab my catfish with a napkin to dry up the grease that was oozing from it. Good sweet tea and baked potatoes. Server wasn't very attentive and when she did come by she would rush off quickly not giving you any time to really ask for anything. My father is generous and left a nice tip but if it was up to me I wouldn't have paid for anything there except my sweet tea. I don't recommend.

I came here on a Sunday afternoon. My mistake. There were gazillion people here. I waited about an hour for my food to arrive. By that time, I was full from the appetizers and I did not even feel like eating my entre. I ordered the spicy fish sandwich and my husband ordered the fish tacos. They were both alright. Pretty decent, but nothing special. Tasted like mall food court seafood. Everything was covered in batter and deep fried. Maybe we ordered the wrong stuff. I don't know. i was not really impressed with this place and the wait was definitely NOT worth it. I might give this place a try again if I'm craving for some fish and chips, but I don't think I'll be back here any time soon.

On my mother's and my recent trip to Louisville, we had a heck of a time finding it. Our Garmin had us going everywhere but there. When we finally did arrive we had a small wait, which was weird considering at the time did not seem all That full in the area we were seated in. This was a nice change for us for our last night in Louisville. We had a lovely dinner that included scrod, halibut if I remember right, shrimp, scallops, and side of our choice with hushpuppies. We also had the sweet tea which was a needed relief from the humidity of the evening. Our waitress Julie was sweet as can be and very attentive to our dining needs. Thank You to the staff and management for making our dinner back home a pleasant one.

One star says it all. Where to start... The reason we came to Kingfish on Sunday was to hear the band you hade scheduled outside. We put our name in for an outside table. Wait time was 20 minutes which was good for us. We went to the outside bar to get a beer only to find it was not open so we went to the bar inside and it was backed up with not only with 3 servers waiting for their drinks for their customers but bar customers as well. We decided that waiting 20 or more minutes to order a beer was a little long. We then decided to go to the carry out to get a beer. I started to apologize for making them work. We were not acknowledged at all other than to collect our money. After 20 minutes my phone rang (since I had to give my cell number to be called when table was ready) and almost did not answer since it was a Michigan number. It was Kingfish saying our table was ready. Did not know you had a Michigan location so I am assuming the workers have to use their personal phone??? We were seated, waitress came, ordered water and beer to drink. No problem. She came back, we ordered our dinner (2 out of 3 people ate) which was the Fish & Chips. Food came quickly and we sent it back quickly. It was Carry Out cold, meaning if I would have picked it up and brought it home cold. French fry's were white and not a golden brown. reminded me of the fry's you pull out of the freezer they were that white. I understand the reason to not salt them. Fish was also cold. Will I be back?? Probably not and that is a shame. The location is there and the atmosphere is there but the food isn't and it hasn't been in a long time.

I've been to this Kingfish many times over the years. It was always a favorite of my grandparents. We often took relatives that visited from out of town and I remember the food being better than it is today. It's not bad just not the best. I will say that I love the hush puppies. Sadly that's not quite enough to make me want to come more than once a year. The fried fish was a bit tough and the green beans were bland. I liked the onion rings but I think they slice the rings a bit too thick. We also got the boom boom shrimp appetizer which was actually decent but overall I felt like for the price everything should have been better. Our server was friendly and our meals came out quickly which is always a plus with two little kids! Overall two and a half stars. I will return for my yearly visit in 2014.

***3.5 I love their hush puppies here and the staff was really friendly. I gave them a 3.5 because the food was just A-Ok nothing short of a wow factor. Great place to hang out during nice warm weather and sit out by the river though. This was my second time and well I still wasn't impressed. Price is fare for what they offer.

Great atmosphere and great food for a reasonable price. I two choose two combo of broiled tilapia and grilled shrimp, salad, and baked potato. The service was friendly and efficient.

If I could give this place no stars I would, the food is nasty, frozen and yuck. Just bcuz they are a landmark doesn't mean the food is good, save your time and taste buds...

This place is great for a summer night out. It has a beautiful view. The atmosphere is relaxing. The food is just OKAY. It's nothing fabulous. If you like fried foods you will probably like it. It was too much for me.

Always wanted to try this restaurant. The food was mediocre and overpriced considering. The service was great though!
