Best sushi in Louisville! We love this place. Better food than the other place in Fern Creek (which is also good), but less pretentious and more reasonably priced. Great drink specials as well. Haven't tried their hibachi grill yet, but it looks really good.

Go here hungry! The portions are ridiculous and the sushi is unbelievable. Oh yeah.... Stretchy-pants are a GREAT idea.

My wife and I found this place on Yelp while heading to an over packed Sake Blue on Valentines day. We parked our car two rows back in the parking lot thinking we would not get a seat but, there where two seat left at the sushi bar. (Side note: best place to sit at any sushi restaurant) The restaurant leaves a lot to be desired in decor. It's funky in a not cool way. That being said the place is clean. The hibachi tables are in the middle of the dinning room! Weird! I say just walk by and head for the bar and eat rolls. The sushi we ate was Good. That's it. Nothing mind blowing just good. Best thing going for this place is that Sake Blue is almost always on a wait. Come here sit right down and have a good meal. We have eaten here a few times and have yet to see a bill over $70 with tip. The wife and I normally order three rows, a beer or two and nigiri.

The rolls here are HUGE, very, very good, but HUGE! The hibachi express that they recently added is same ole' same ole' hibachi, nothing special. The restaurant is small (as seems to be typical of most sushi joints in Louisville) and the ambiance leaves something to be desired with the neon colored walls but overall I like this place.

This place is awesome! I like the atmosphere, the waiters are great and and the sushi is absolutely delicious! I've had the playboy roll twice now and that is my favorite so far. The calamari is also wonderful. I tried this place only a couple of weeks ago. Before that I didn't know it existed. How did I miss a great sushi place that is so close to me for so long? It's my new mission to make this place known!

Always searching for a new high quality sushi bar I went to Kailana with a fellow adventurer yesterday at lunch. While Kailana is, technically, on Bardstown Road don't let the street name fool you - they're located in the J-town/Fern Creek area in a shopping center. NOW the challenge is don't let the location fool you! This sushi bar is high quality, has a diverse menu (sushi and otherwise) and an interior to match. My favorite was the specialty Wasabi Tuna Roll with the super white tuna which was recommended to us by our server. Delicious. We shared a lunch sushi combo platter of other more standard rolls (California, Philedelphia and Alaska) and walked away with an $18 bill before tip - how's that for a good deal? A few things cause the 3-star rating, and if I could give it 3.5 I would. First our server, while entertaining, didn't know much about sushi. Although I have to give him props on the tuna roll he also forgot our appetizer chicken skewer (not that we could have eaten it with all that sushi, but that's not the point). Second, the hip hop mix playing in the background confused my senses. Third, call me a snob but I really was looking to head into trendy Bardstown Road for a new sushi joint and ended up south side, it's quite a hike and there are similar quality sushi bars much closer to me. All but the location are factors that I'd guess are due to freshman jitters, they'll settle in and I'm going to guess they'll land as a solid 4-star sushi bar. All in all, I'm glad we tested the waters. If you live or work near southeast Louisville you are in luck because a high quality sushi bar just opened up in your neighborhood. They've only been open for about 4 months and need your support - go check them out!

I dine at this place every other week. I've had sushi all over the states and I have not had any better than what I've had here. The Hibachi is good too. I do feel the atmosphere and hibachi prices don't go hand and hand, but after my first bad service visit, I talked with the owner and since then I'm hugged when I walk in the door! I love this place...my neighborhood sushi joint!

Kai Lana is a small restaurant with that cozy, good "best-kept-secret-hole-in-the-wall" kinda atmosphere. Less pretentious appearance than some other local hibachi restaurants - no indoor waterfall and koi pond. Hostess always greets with prompt attention and a smile. Ordering can be difficult, as they give you multiple menus (3 or 4) to choose from which is confusing. There are posters for different varieties of sushi plastered on all 4 walls which is visually overwhelming. If you're seated at the grill table, don't be surprised if a chef puts a plate of raw meat or vegetables placed on a shelf within your arms' reach in front of your seat (inside the grill area). I would like to see the grill area cleaner - there is greasy-looking build-up of whatever foodstuffs on the shelves and large squirt bottles of sauces and oils that the chefs use during cooking. Not being a sushi fan, I always opt for the hibachi grill food. The hibachi food is always cooked properly and is quite tasty, but is usually made with too much sauce that can overpower the other ingredients' flavors. I always ask for "just a little" sauce on my orders. Generous portions for less $ than similar restaurants. Table service is attentive and prompt, offered with courtesy.

I noticed the high ratings on this place, I figured it had to be one of the best sushi restaurants in Louisville areas. But really, it's alright. I actually liked friend's order better than mine. She ordered BlowYourMind with rice (usually don't come with rice) which has tuna, crab, jalapeno, cream cheese and spicy sauce. Definitely one of the best rolls I ever had, I have to admit. However on the other hand, I ordered steak rolls along with shrimps. The steak came in almost raw, way too rare for me. Uneatable. I couldn't eat the rest, so I ended up taking home and cooked them the way they should be. Shrimps were soggy, the worse shrimp I ever had. Not only that, barely any shrimp meat in it. For a 12+ dollar meal, it should have been THAT good, high quality type of shrimps and properly cooked steak. The soft drink which they charge you for 2 bucks, tasted like crap. I ordered 7UP but certainly not taste like one. Two bucks, so no excuse. I've been to better sushi places but at least I did enjoy their seaweed salad, though.

When I go to a restaurant I'm always wanting good food. If the food is bad I won't go once I've checked the reviews. Kai Lana in regards to decor was very simple and a small restaurant honestly giving me the impression that I wasn't about to spend the money that I did. They didn't try to play up the idea that you were in Japan...which although fine I'm cool with paintings and small stuff to give off a theme. For Kai Lana, between my girlfriend and I spent $50 on Sushi...fear not, we can just crush sushi and you get plenty in one roll. I got the Jukebox and Casanova rolls both were tremendous. Tasted amazing. Could not ask for anything better for the price and generous quantity based on higher end Sushi Bars/Japanese restaurants I've been to. However, my problem, you say: "Oh good sir, you gave them four stars." The service was horrible after we received our drinks. I had to basically flag down the waitress after pretty much putting in the signals with my tea cup upon my tea pot that I wanted more green tea. I've been to small restaurants where the wait staff is always seen, always keeping your drinks topped off and refilling whatever free appetizer that they may offer. That is how you get yourself a great tip...I honestly did not want to TIP much at all. I TIPd under 10% because I was massively annoyed. I may return because the Sushi was very good, however, I'm more apt to try other places in Louisville.

When this place first open it was average. It had bad servers. It was so bad I boycotted for 8 months. Since they have added a hibachi grill, which is ok at best. But they do have some of the best Sushi around with amazing

I love this place. I've been to several sushi places around town, and several out of town. I can honestly say, they have the best sushi I've ever eaten. The rolls are HUGE, it's always fresh. I would "guestimate" I've eaten here over 100 times since they've opened and it's still one of my favorite places to eat. You just can't beat it for the value.

The absolute best sushi Louisville has to offer! Terrific flavor combinations and outstanding portion sizes. I have brought several people here who state they do not like sushi and end up loving it. If you are in Louisville and in the mood for sushi or shashimi, then this is an absolute must.

Come hungry, rows are huge! Management and service is very friendly. We have been coming here since they opened. My favorite row if u like a spicy one is the poker face! Try it :)
(5)Joe S.
The rolls are fresh, creative, and huge. I normally eat around 3 rolls because I'm a pig, but I could barely finish 2 on this visit. They have recently added a hibachi express to the mix.

Great tuna (not stringy) and super white tuna nigiri (like butter!) and the casanova roll was yummy too - spicy inside, cool on the outside. Good rice in their rolls and nigiri . Ginger salad was good and fairly large sized. We were greeted with a free and delicious cucumber salad with a sesame oil and vinegar dressing. Pitchers of beer too! Decor is nice and the staff are very friendly - good service, but not over-attentive either (can't stand being 'checked on' and having my conversation interrupted every 5 minutes). Looking forwad to going back to try more on their extensive menu. They have a dinner menu too, but we are all about the sushi!

The Sushi is delicious. I had the Tempura roll and the Poker face roll. Both delicious and plentiful. Well priced food, the decor is very nice, and there seems to be a decent following. For a sushi bar outside of the Highlands and downtown, this place is great.

This is my new favorite sushi place! On my second and third visits here I had the Pink Lady Roll - Tuna, Snapper, Albacore & Salmon inside and wrapped in soy paper, the New Orleans Roll - Crown fish, avocado, jalapeno, cream cheese with spicy mayo and eel sauce and the Spicy Yellowtail Roll. Also tried Calamari for the first time ever. The service has been great on each visit. The sushi is fresh and delicious and the portions are huge.

Great friendly staff brings some incredible sushi, and our sushi chef surprised us with mini shrimp for our yellow tail.

Go to Sake Blue. This is a smaller place and thebother one has a wait, but the sushi here is just not that good. There is this one sauce that is on everything and we ordered four rolls and really didn't enjoy anynof them. The Poison spider roll was the only one tolerable. Big sushi fan and this was not good.

Love this place. Good sushi, good hibachi grill. They seem to always have something new to try. Its one of my goto places to eat at.
(5)Jeff R.
This is a great place to eat. Whether it be a sushi night or a hibachi either is delicious. The gyoza is excellent and the service is great. They always greet you with a smile and this place beats all others when it comes to taste vs. price. My favorite sushi is the tornado roll and ehh sexy lady roll.
(5)Patty F.
Delicious food, fast and friendly service! The prices are affordable and we loved the variety of sushi choices! This is a hidden gem in Fern Creek! We will be returning often! The salad & rice are yummy as well !
(5)Stephanie S.
What a little treat! I can thank the Yelp! Community for helping me find this place on a late Sunday night! Their sushi list is extensive and their service is fast! They also have a speedy hibachi service as well! The only downside is if you have allergies to anything (shellfish, gluten, etc) you need to take it upon yourself to talk through with your waiter or waitress about things you can and cannot have. (I know this is the case at just about every restaurant) They also do takeout if you want to pick up sushi in your jammies, then go back to your Netflix marathon! (I may or may not have done this!)
(4)Trevor W.
They have a Hibachi Express lunch but we came for sushi rolls. We were greeted at the door and shown a booth seating tabletop. The Hibachi is in the center of the restaurant. There are some good beer specials advertised but it is Sunday and I live in Kentucky now so that means no beer for me with my lunch so we ordered sweet tea. So back to the food... We ordered the Gyoza and the Asahi roll (Fried Shrimp, avocado, Crab, and sushi shrimp) and the Steak and Shrimp Hibachi. Everything was excellent. I think I found my new regular sushi joint!
(5)Sherrie H.
It was nice to try something new but... The rolls were good but don't get the seared ones because they sear them with a blow torch and they just taste burnt. If we come back we will not get those. The servers were very nice and helpful and the price was fair. If your in Fern Creek try Sake Blue before this one.

This is my favorite place to get sushi and Japanese food. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they provide solid service. If you go regularly they'll get to know you cause it's always the same crew. Food is always spot on. It's fun to sit at the hibachi everyone in a while. In my opinion this is the best sushi for your money in the city, you won't break the bank like you will at some other establishments.
