Having recently moved from Southern California to Louisville, we were hoping we'd be able to find a good sushi joint. First we tried Fuji Japanese Steakhouse on Springhurst Blvd because it was close to our hotel, but it was horrible and we were doubtful we'd find anything in the area. Luckily, we turned to Yelp and tried Hiko-a-Mon based on the reviews; it was way beyond Fuji, and not too far behind the places we frequented in California... Hiko-a-Mon is a pretty classy place, with dark lighting and modern decorations. Most importantly, the sushi tasted fresh and delicious. We tried several items, like the calimari appetizer (decent), miso soup (really good), Westport roll (excellent), rainbow roll (average), edamame (fair), and the teriyaki salmon (good). I'm looking forward to going back so we can try different rolls and see how fresh the nigiri tastes.

I am not sure why my experience was so different from others but this place was really good. Now sushi in Louisville has to be graded on a curve but not by too much here. The fish was fresh, the rolls were very inventive and the service was, dare I say ESP like. We ordered the Spicy Tuna and Edamame lettuce wraps (yeah they rocked) and I was thinking "the next time the server comes by I will ask here for a glass of water." When she came by she dropped off a water...get out of my head! We had several appetizer dishes including a seared ahi tuna and shrimp dumplings that were all very good. Now I must point out that it was 7 PM on a Saturday and the place was not packed, yet. And it had been over 7 months since my wife and I could break aways for a date so maybe I am grading a bit high but I think it is deserved. I would recommend reservations, they are on open table, if you plan 8 pm or later, but other than tat this place is a definite check out. Hopefully my experience is what you will share when you go there

I've had good meals in the restaurant but nothing spectacular. This service is good enough, sometimes a little bit disorganized maybe. Every time I try to get a to go order from here it has been sub-par. I get in my car and the broth for my udon was maybe luke warm. I waited 15 min after I ordered over the phone and showed up and then continued to wait for another 20 minutes before getting my food and leaving . There wasn't a hostess at the stand the entire time. Classic scenario for overpriced udon with two medium sized tempura shrimp. Take out isn't easy but a functioning restaurant should be able to do it. I'll try this place again out of convenience, but they've already taken themselves down a notch as compared to the service and quality when they still had a bit more of the new restaurant energy.

The most impressive and amazing sushi I've ever had in Louisville. This place is stunning inside, I love the layout. You can sit at the bar, or opt for benches and tables. LOVE the bench seating at the tables. Perfect for families. The interior is spectacular, and every detail is right on point, from the pillows to the flatware. I love how the take out area has it's own little fish market. The sushi itself was stunning, and rivaled the meal I ate at iron chef Morimoto's in Philadelphia as best sushi I've ever had. The presentation was excellent, and the portions were a great size. I love that they serve lunch on saturday! My new favorite spot

The fish was fresh and delicious. The service was good. The miso soup was savory, salty, and really tasty. The rice fell apart on our nigiri and on our rolls. A lot of effort and fancy sauces on the rolls, but due to the rice couldn't cut the basic principles of perfect sushi.

Best Japanese food in town! And man, we have tried them ALL. Hiko-A-Mon is super classy inside, and their appetizers and their sushi in particular are really spectacular. We love the Ebi Mayo, and we always get at the very least an "Islander" and a "Jennifer" - two of their best rolls, in my opinion. Can't recommend this place enough!

Woke up one day and I was dying for authentic Japanese ramen. I knew that this would be such an impossible task as Louisville isn't really the most diverse place on the planet when it comes to cuisines. After diligently digging into Yelp and Google, I found Hiko-a-Mon, which seems to be the ONLY place in Louisville which serves actual Japanese ramen. My husband and I went there for their happy hour, info which I have also found out during my research. It goes from 4:30 pm-6:00 pm everyday. The only thing which we got from the happy hour menu though are the half off Sapporos. We obviously got the hiko-A-mon ramen which had pork broth soup from pork bone, ramen noodles, and some veggies. It's a big bowl and it's good for sharing between 2 people in my opinion, unless you're starving to death. We also ordered a couple of sushi rolls--chicken tempura (chicken tempura & mango in soy wrapper w/spicy mayo) and my all-time favorite, crunch munch (spicy crab inside; cooked shrimp on top w/ tempura flakes). The ramen was good, tasted authentic, and absolutely satisfied my craving. Sushi rolls were one of the best I've had in Louisville and I will have to come back and try other rolls. I wasn't able to get anything with fish in it but I will the next time because I'm sure that they will be yummy and fresh! They do have their own fish market after all. Prices were fairly appropriate for what they have to offer and the service was fantastic! Looking forward to our next hiko-a-mon visit for some more sushi rolls and maybe try some of their udon or soba. Really happy to have found this new gastro gem!

We sat at the sushi bar and were fully entertained by the bickering of the chefs... What characters! We ordered the cardinal roll and wow! It has an amazing wasabi mousse on the side which was so good. We had a variety of sushi and shrimp tempura which were all great! Will definitely return!

Beautiful presentation, superb quality of seafood and creative, delicious specialty rolls. The sushi there is top notch. The avocado seafood gratin appetizer was so tasty too. Colorful restaurant, nice ambiance and excellent service.

This place is always good. The crunch munch roll is not gooey and mayonnaise as it is other restaurants. The dragon roll (eel with avocado) is delicious. This is a good sushi restaurant that cares about its product and its customers. I will happily return.

the best thing about this place was the atmosphere. the lights are dim and the decor has an authentic Japanese feel. the food, however, was a little better than average. I've read reviews about how good the ramen and Las Vegas roll was and so I decided to try them out. needless to say, I was disappointed of the hype. the ramen broth was extra gingery and the Las Vegas roll was decent, but not worth the price. it's a nice place to dine in for a first time, but I don't think I would come back anytime soon. a reservation is highly recommended.

Hiko-A-Mon is usually my go-to place for sushi and other Japanese cuisine. It's so delicious!!! I always get the Las Vegas roll. It's deep fried goodness. I'm not big on raw fish so this is perfect for me. Their house salad with ginger dressing is also good. Their ramen. Ohhhh their ramen. I love it so, but usually save it when the weather is chilly outside. It's a very warm and soothing dish with terrific flavor. Last time I had it they changed the noodles. They were NOT good. I haven't had it since so I can't really say if they went back to the original recipe. Fingers crossed they did. It would be a major shame to ruin something so perfect. I usually order a large Kirin or Orion while I'm there. Sometimes I also order some hot sake. Kind of depends on my mood and who I'm with at the time. I have tried several other things on the menu such as the gyoza, vegetable fried rice, chicken yaki tori, avocado seafood gratin (my fav), bbq spare ribs (Woodford Reserve sauce! Amazing!!), edamame, ahi tuna tataki, shrimp tempura, and miso soup. Sometimes they have oyster shooters on special when the oysters are in season. Omg amazing! It's a small oyster, ponzu sauce, sriracha sauce and a quail egg on top. I was hesitant trying it but immediately fell in love. It's a BOOM of flavor in your mouth. Everything is so good here! Writing this makes me want to visit for dinner tonight. Enjoy!!

I've eaten here many times. Their sushi is ok. Tonight I tried their yakisoba, which was the best I've had stateside. Of course it isn't as good I enjoyed while living in Okinawa, but it's pretty good. I've tried it at many restaurants before and am usually very disappointed. This was a nice surprise. We had six people and wanted to sit in the special seating area that's Japanese style, but if you don't have eight people they charge you $50 which was disappointing. Pretty good restaurant, though. Side note: Bathroom trash was overflowing.

I've eaten here many times and had decent sushi for Louisville but the last time I sent it back-,it was definitely off. The manager disagreed, but I invited her to eat it then - not me. She took it off the bill. In my opinion, not enough to make up for dried out smelly raw fish delivered to your table. Other dishes are usually good and the service is too. But sushi that is not 100% is never acceptable in a Japanese restaurant or anywhere. This place is definitely slipping.

I understand that a party of 16 can be overwhelming, but the fact that there was only one other party of 4 in the restaurant does not excuse the terrible service we received. It took over 40 minutes to receive our first round of drinks and an hour and a half to receive the sushi. Then another hour passed to receive our second round of drinks. After two and a half hours and two drinks a piece we were "cut off" because the restaurant didn't want to "be held responsible" for us walking back to the hotel. A lame excuse for a lazy server and bartender.

After a visit to the Jim Beam distillery, a Korean friend and I stopped at Hiko A Mon. It's a sophisticated atmosphere, a really nice, and a great place to go with a group of friends. We sat at the bar, where my knowledgeable friend ordered by the piece. At her recommendation, we shared the buta-kakuni, pieces of meltingly tender pork belly served in a flavorful broth. I ordered a kakimaki roll, which features delicious fried oysters, and a sashimi/sushi combo plate. The plate was plentiful, with generous slices of fish, and came with a really delicious miso soup. I found it a little lacking in imagination; it was the usual tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. But all were good. The menu here is extensive and has plenty for those who don't care for sushi. My Korean friend adores the place for sushi and would eat there every day if she could, so that should tell you something!

Go for the happy hour special! We arrived with a craving for sushi. The menu is great with a lot of options. We were told they was having happy hour specials. Beer $2.50, chicken wings to die for under $4 and pink Cadillac sushi roll $6.50. They had another roll but I forgot the name. Our group left full and satisfied. I"ll be back....

Stick with the sushi and you can't go wrong! The dragon roll is especially tasty and impressive looking too. Unfortunately, my chicken teriyaki was incredibly bland and overcooked and my husband's soup and noodles were so hot that even after ten minutes of cooling, he could not enjoy them. I would definitely go back, but only for the sushi.

3 1/2 stars. Pretty good. What's really nice about this place is the availability of more-traditional cooked Japanese dishes. The sushi is decent, but not fabulous. Still, we'll reserve final judgement on the sushi for after a couple more tries. If you have a big party, consider reserving one of the private rooms. We had a large gatehring and reserved the larger front room (to the left when you enter). It was extremely private and a lot of fun (low sunken tables).

I love this place!!! It is my go-to Sushi place. We always like to try new places and every time we do we always say Hiko-a-Mon was better. The rolls are always fresh, the Restaurant it self is very clean and Upscale. When you are there make sure and save 1 roll to be decided by the Chef... We have been blown away by the taste and Creativity of his chosen Rolls..

My wife is still pregnant and she wants sushi something bad, but no raw stuff for her due to the growing little man (woo hoo, it's a boy!) inside her tummy. We usually go to Tokyo, but she feels like she'd be tempted to eat something raw if we go to our go-to sushi spot so we head to Hiko-a-Mon instead. Now we've been to Japan before and have friends that grew up there, etc. etc. so we, just like everyone else who's eaten a few slices of raw fish, feel like we know us some Japanese food. Specifically, traditional dishes like sukiyaki, udon, rice bowls, ramen, etc. We were very pleased to see quite a variety at this restaurant. The service is not the greatest, but for us, it wasn't too bad either. The wait staff needs some training on how often they should check the table, we were left alone for extended periods of time. We went at 9pm on a Tuesday so the place was pretty dead when we arrived. I'd probably have the same comments as everyone else in terms of service if it were busy. In any case, the food is good, but I feel like it suffers a little from the "Cheescake Factory Syndrome" if that makes sense. If you make a menu big enough, there's plenty of good stuff on the menu, but nothing is great. I had the nabe yaki udon which is basically a noodle soup with some fish cake and tempura shrimp. It was good, but the heart of the dish is in the broth and it was good, but not great. I'd eat it again, don't get me wrong, but I think they use the same broth in basically all their soups and noodle dishes. My wife had a teriyaki and tempura combo which, again was good, but not great. In any case, just for having some decent traditional noodle soups, yoshinko, and sunomono, I'll give this place 4 stars instead of 3. I'd still go to Tokyo if I were allowed to eat sashimi in front of my wife.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because my hot tea was pale yellow with little to no flavor. I'm not one to eat all the crazy raw sushi but what I did have was absolutely the BEST that I've ever had! The seared ahi tuna was covered in fish eggs and a yummy, spicy sauce. The Philadelphia roll was the best I've had - the California roll was the best I've had - but the CRUNCH MUNCH IS AMAZING! Stuffed with shrimp and spicy mayo - topped with crab meat and crunchy tempura flakes!!! The BEST! I also had a salad - the lettuce was out of a bag but the dressing was de-lish!

***UPDATED 4/7/2014*** It took me a long time to give this place a second chance but boy am I glad I did! This time the service was top notch! The food was amazing too! I will be back for sure! Original Post from 2009 when am gave it 2 Stars: First of all I have to say up front that the food at Hiko-a-Mon is very tasty. The service on the other hand was unacceptable. We headed to Hiko-a-Mon for my husbands birthday and we super excited as we LOVE Japanese food. Granted we did have a large party but we got there early and we were the only table in the whole restaurant. Our server came over and instead of an upbeat introduction he looks at the table and said, "oh, this is going to be a big party isn't is?" He then proceeds to take our order and then the waiting begins. Appetizers arrive 20 min. later , but some are missing. Fried rice arrives 15 min after that but 2 of the orders are missing. All the food entrees arrive 20 min after that, but my sushi never comes. So about 15 min after the rest of my party are eating their dinners I ask the where abouts of my sushi and he says that it is on its way. 20 min. later I ask again and he has the nerve to look around the dinning room (which is now packed) and says "see all the other people? They have first priority, you sushi will arrive soon". Ummmm... No dude... I ordered my sushi over an hour ago when the room was completely empty. Needless to say that my Sushi arrived after our entire table of 12 had finished their dinner and had their plates cleared. I had to get my food "to go" so they didn't have to sit there for another 45 min. for me to enjoy my meal. I haven't been back to Hiko-a-Mon, I will give it another shot but if I see that waiter again I am going to go into the kitchen and place our order myself.

This is one of my favorite sushi resturants in Louisville. The sushi is prepared really well, the quality of the seafood is top notch, and there is a nice selection of sushi to choose from. This place is definitely worth checking out.

We went late in the evening on a Friday night, so I was able to get reservations about 1.5 hours before we went. When we got there, we waited about 5-10 minutes and were seated. Our server was very nice, but kept disappearing for 10 mins at a time, which was strange. We ordered sushi, fried rice and a filet. The food was incredible and so fresh! If this rating were solely based on food, they would have gotten 5 stars! The reason I couldn't quite give them 5 stars was because the bathrooms were dirty and the service was spotty. But I did think it was cool that they had heated toilet seats! Fun!

Came here around 7:00 on a Monday for weekly date night with my bestie. We were seated right away, however, the dining room was more crowded than I expected for a cold Monday night. The dining room is very small (unless there's another area I don't know about) so I can see how it could get crowded here quickly. The service was excellent. Our server was sweet and helpful. We never ran out of water. Our food came out quickly and our different courses were perfectly timed. The food was even better than the service. We each started out with a small house salad, which was dressed with a better-than-average ginger dressing. Then we split the Tornado roll, which came out as soon as we finished our last bite of salad. It was some of the freshest sushi I've had, and they didn't skimp on the crab topping. For our entrees, I had the beef yaki soba and the BFF had chicken fried rice. Both were HUGE portions for relatively inexpensive prices (yaki soba ~ $14, fried rice ~ $9). Both dishes were outstanding. I desired a little more spice for mine, and our server happily brought me a bowl of hot sauce (looked and tasted like sriracha), which made the dish perfect for me. The portions were so large, my friend took home what looked like at least another meal (you should know by now that I cleaned my plate). I was impressed with Hiko-a-Mon. It will be one of my go-to Japanese places, as it's definitely one of the best in town.

After a long day of driving, I was thrilled to stubble upon this joint. Everything I order was beyond my expectation. I really enjoyed my meal. For future reference, they should put a reserved sign for seats. I was embarrassed when I got scold by a patron indicating he was saving those seats! He wasn't even the owner!

This place still rocks!! Please refer to my previous review for how epic it is!! I just wanted to share a photo of their (non GF) dragon roll because it's pretty and looks like a dragon!! If you're GF like me, just let the wait staff know and they will take great care of you! Yummy sushi for everyone!! Also, their ginger dressing for the house salad is legit!! I could make a meal out of the salad there! They also make them fresh in house weekly, so you could buy 12oz of it for $7 if you want to take some home!

Ramen! Ramen!! Ramen!!! Eggy, springy, noodles in a rich, steaming hot pork bone broth with tender pork and sliced mushrooms with bites of ginger and topped with scallions. My mom and I both ordered a big bowl of the Ramen and shared a sushi roll. We could not finish all of our Ramen so I asked for a to go cup for the leftovers and asked if I could order a side of the noodles which was just two dollars. So you can guess what I had for dinner the next night. The crunch munch roll was delicious. Shrimp in top and stuffed with spicy crab. I can't wait to come back for more porky, noodley goodness!!!

My overall opinion of this place is "pretty good." My friend and I came here one Friday night for a girls night out. We are both sushi fanatics and 'try new places' fanatics. Since neither of us had been to Hiko-A-Mon before but we were both craving sushi, we settled on this place. We went at about 6:30 on a Friday night. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and asked if we had a reservation. We did not, and the restaurant only had a few parties inside so this was not a problem. Our waitress was very friendly, and was very good at keeping out waters topped off. No complaints at all service-wise. Their house salad is a sesame base, which our waitress explained to us when we were asking if they had ginger salad (they don't). My friend and I decided to try it and it was very good. Similar to your typical ginger dressing but different enough that you notice. I definitely recommend trying it if you're a ginger salad fan! The sushi was good. We ordered 3 rolls to split- the yum yum roll, the Jennifer roll, and the Westport roll. The yum yum and Jennifer tasted the same in my opinion, with the difference being the tempura flakes on top of the Jennifer. The Westport roll was my favorite of the 3 (I am a fan of the fruity sushi!) The sushi menu is slightly confusing, they have the order sheet which lists the sushi and prices with no description, and then they have a description paper with descriptions of some (not all) of their rolls, and no prices are listed on here. Overall, pretty good sushi. Not the best in Louisville, but not the worst. They have a nice atmosphere, and friendly service. I would probably not choose this place, just comparing it to other sushi spots, but I wouldn't mind coming back if someone else was making the decision!

  • Tina T.

The atmosphere is good, their decor is good as well. They need more than one host, the two times I came in, I see her rushing back and forth from the front to the back of the restaurant. To be honest I thought this place's food would be really delicious but it was all hyped up. The ramen wasn't suiting my taste. For me if I keep on eating something I don't favor to, my stomach starts to hurt.

I love this place! Everything tastes very fresh and the presentation is beautiful. We had the Sunday morning roll, Yum Yum roll, and Crunch Bourbon roll, and Crunch Munch. I recommend each of them. The salad with ginger dressing is cold and crisp. The chefs interact with the customers who sit at the sushi bar. They are very friendly. We always call ahead and ask to sit at the bar. We have always been seated immediately upon arrival.

The sushi here is surprisingly excellent and the fish is fresh. I ordered the super white tuna nigiri which has a thick slab of fish. I also ordered the fried oyster roll and spicy salmon which were both very good. The oyster roll was fresh and crunchy. I saw a lot of customers order the ramen so next time I'm around, I'll definitely have to try it! I took one star off for lack of friendly service, but she was efficient.

Japanese style ramen is not easy to unearth regardless of what city you live in. In Kentucky, I commute from Lexington to Louisville predominantly for this establishment's 'Pork Bone Broth Ramen'. It's been a long time since I had a satisfying ramen. The reason behind it is because no establishment is able to maintain consistency (Including this one). However, my experience was amazing because I came on a good day? A bad day for me is the broth being higher in salt content. It happens to majority of other ramen venues. But if you live anywhere in the vicinity of Louisville, I prefer Hiko - A - Mon. When I am at a Japanese restaurant, I must order ika maruyaki. This one did not have it but they had an alternative similar item on the menu. With it, sushi rolls. I do not need to specify which rolls are good because that is a preference; however, the ingredients and fish element was very fresh and delectable.

If willingness to drive two hours for a bowl of ramen is any indication, I'd have to say that Hiko-A-Mon has won me over. My friends and I went down to Louisville for the Derby, and while everyone else was fawning over mint juleps, fancy hats, and sundresses, I had my heart set on getting to Hiko-A-Mon before it closed. It's a rarity to get some legitimate Asian food in the Midwest, so be still my heart, I had high hopes and was not (too) disappointed. Their karaage was great! It was a great portion size, but I do wish there was some dipping sauce that came with it (tonkatsu, etc). The waitress never came around before we finished the chicken so I couldn't ask her for any. There is only one kind of ramen that they serve here, so choosing what to eat was pretty easy. The noodles tasted homemade and were cooked to perfection (al dente yum!). The broth was good, but it lacked the depth that I've had with East Coast ramen. I think if they can add some depth to the broth, then it'll be a knockout and maybe even a contender for some of the great ramen places in Philadelphia and New York City. The pork was a great portion size, so no complaints there, but the actual taste of the pork was a little underwhelming. I wish it was a little more smokey. And of course, I always wish there were more fixin's like a soft boiled egg and bamboo shoots. But maybe less is more! All in all, I would totally come back just to eat here. In fact, *looks at calendar* when's my next free weekend? :D

An upscale sushi bar that includes steaks and other various options. This is a pretty hot spot in town and it can get busy on weekend evenings. It's not hibachi. This place is a little more intimate. It's a great spot for a date. The dishes are fresh and lots of authentic options. The ramen is a huge draw. The staff is very knowledgable and will be outspoken if you ask them what's good (which is awesome). If they see you're an open-minded eater, they'll give you a few tips on the more authentic Japanese selection. We used to go regularly and they would advise us all the time. I loved that. This is going to run a little higher than your average sushi destination. Not a ton higher, just a few dollars. It's great service, great selections, and great staff however. The sushi is good, it's certainly well up there for sushi in louisville, and always worth a stop in for a nice dinner.

Ankimo! Hamachi collar! Grilled squid! Grilled smelt! Uni sauce! OH....my.... Hiko-a-Mon also serves those fancy sushi rolls that many people like. But I'm looking for the more exotic, authentic experience from a Japanese restaurant. I found it at Hiko-a-Mon last night! For now, I don't have to drive all the way to Lexington when I get a craving. I decided on the roasted yellow tail (hamachi) collar and the Signature Bento for dinner. The hamachi collar (cheeks) came in two pieces and contains the most tender, juicy, unctuous flesh. A few jabs, picks and digs of the chopsticks later, I cleaned both pieces inside and out. The bento box is next. When Hiko-a-Mon says "jumbo fried oyster", they mean jumbo. That one oyster was about the size of a lime! It must be one of those big Pacific oysters. It was fresh as can be and fried just enough I can still taste its brininess. Shrimp tempura, sashimi, braised pork with egg, and pickles complete the two layers of bento box. The next time, I'm getting the ankimo...I can only describe it as foie gras of the sea...from a monk fish. P.S. I'm glad to report there are no hibachi tables in here! No greasy smell on your clothes. The restaurant is more intimate than those hibachi places, too. It makes a great date place. There is also a party room with bamboo flooring, low table and sunken pit for your legs.

Trendy sushi place which there is not many of in Louisville and it was like home again for me (DFW, Texas) when I found this place . Good food. Fresh fish. Can't really ask for much more in that department. However, when we got sat down we never received any service or assigned a server until 40minutes later. But that was ok for us at the time since we were in no rush and there was alot of eye candy there to include some of the staff. Plus they compensated us with an apology and an amazing desert on the house.

Went out with another couple last Saturday night for dinner and drinks. We were actually aiming for a different restaurant as my hubby is not a huge sushi fan but when several other choices offered a 45 minute wait and I was ready to start gnawing my arm, we decided sushi it would be. So glad that we did because the food here was fantastic. The service was a bit off but the food was great (thus the 4 stars - because the service did affect the food in two instances). Hubby ordered a salad and fried rice. I wanted to kick him thinking "Really?! can't you just eat sushi and be adventurous?!". Again, so glad I didn't kick him because he shared with me and man was it FANTASTIC! I am not crazy about fried rice but Hiko-a-Mon does something wild to the rice and I almost ate all of his dish. (Seriously, do NOT get in my way when I am hangry!) I also ate half of his salad which was sweet and fantastic. I love the regular "oriental" type salad dressing you get at every other sushi restaurant in town but this is different and really good. And yes, you still want to drink the remaining dressing out of the bottom of the bowl. (And yes again, I always do. I'm not embarrassed to admit this because it is too dang good to waste!) My girlfriend is gluten intolerant - she kind of blows up like a puffer fish - only not as cute - so she stays away from it. She let the waitress know this prior to ordering only the waitress mixed up her order with mine. I got the sushi without all the yummy gooey, crunchy stuff on top like it was supposed to have, and she got her stuff WITH that stuff. Ugh. So hubby and I asked for the sauce and just made do and ate it anyway and it was still yummy. Girlfriend let her hubby eat most of their sushi. Poor girlfriend. We also got hot saki. Please know that it tastes great but be careful because you will probably wake up with a headache the next morning. It wasn't bad but I knew where it came from. If you aren't a big drinker, hot rice wine may not be nice to you. Hubby also order a single eel sashimi which the waitress forgot and we had it delivered - fried yet cold - as we were served our checks. Huh??? Oh well. That was the only non tasty piece of food there was. So still I am sticking with the 4 stars and I will go back again to try more and hopefully get a waitress that can get my order right. :) Ps - They have party rooms you can reserve if you guarantee a minimum of 8 in your party. It looked like that would be fun. Will have to try it in the future.

A true cultural food experience in a familiar and comfortable atmosphere! The wait staff was helpful and attentive although very busy. The food was fresh, tasty, and presented with just enough flourish to be special without seeming like a production. Nice selection of wines and specialty beers. Especially enjoyed the fried oysters and miso soup. Also the Rainbow Roll was very good.

Good atmosphere and friendly service. They did try their best, The sushi was not good. I unfortunately, had to send it back:( I never have sent sushi back before. They kindly took it off my check. On a high note...the ramen was good. Still looking for a tasty sushi place around this land locked area.

Great sushi! Fresh and delicious. The sushi chef grinds up the spicy tuna/salmon to order, so it tastes so fresh! We sat at the sushi bar. 2 of us were full from 4 rolls and miso soup, but it was $50!. There is a heavy leaning on fried or cream cheese rolls but we navigated through them pretty easily. We did try a spicy salmon roll with ground up tempura flakes in it, that was SO good! I crave it. The service was friendly. Probably not a good place for kids.

Been going to this place for a couple years now, but food quality, quantity and service all start to deteriorate. Gave it a couple more tries but the overall experience has not improved. During my last visit with my family, total of 3 persons, we ordered a sashimi deluxe as appetizer (told the waitress specifically) and one bowl of tempura udon, one bowl of the hiko-a-mon ramen and a surf & turf as main course. The waitress first brought out the tempura udon and told us the rest are coming. We were unhappy and we told the waitress we wanted the sashimi deluxe as appetizer AGAIN; she didn't even apologize for her mistake and she said she thought we wanted it with main courses all together. Then she was like do you want me to take the udon back? I was like it's ok now since you already brought it out. Then she walked away with a straight face like it was our fault. The quality and the quantity of sashimi are definitely getting worse. Every time i go there and order the sashimi deluxe i feel like I am getting less of each kind. And the better kind of sashimi are being replaced by the cheaper one i guess, i.e. tako (octopus). Other than sashimi, everything else that I usually order, like tempura udon and hikamon ramen, have been somewhat consistent; however I do tempura udon going downhill. Overall I wanna go back but that service attitude pissed me off and I dont think i would ever go back again.

Lovely service, so many helpful waitresses who checked with us and kept us updated on our order. Tried the ramen and hot avocado/crab appetizer, and both were very nice. Lots of pork in the ramen, so there's a lot of flavor in every bite. Our main waitress explained how they make the broth from pork bone marrow as well, which was very interesting and informative. Such a welcoming establishment with a great and unique menu--my friends, family, and I will definitely be coming back for more!

Picture Japan then open your eyes and you will be at this restaurant!! Real Authentic dishes that are echoing vibrations from the ocean !! Wonderful cold Sake and a vast array of choices! The service was Paramount thanks to the manager who took us in at the last minute. I was in Louisville on business and it concluded at 1015 pm. We happily found this place a serendipitous event indeed as we literally dashed to the restaurant to get in before 11 pm. We had some sushi and uni which was melt in your mouth. I lovingly call it fish candy. We also had the karage which was a generous portion and. Very good! We will be back again and again I am sure Thank you to the staff and manager for the excellence in service and culinary skill!!!!

Overall, the fish was fresh and the sushi prepared well. What makes this place different from others in Louisville: more traditional meal offerings, contemporary American dining atmosphere. I was mostly disappointed only with the cleanliness in the dining area.

my mom hates dining out ("i could make this better myself at home" is a common utterance). but the one place she's always willing to go is hiko-a-mon! my mom loves the futo-maki and the grilled eel, my nephew loves the udon, the bf loves the pork ramen, and i love the veggie roll and the vegetable tempura. basically everything we've ever ordered has been authentic and delicious! PROS: yummy food, reasonable prices, friendly service, clean and tastefully decorated, able to facilitate large parties (private room available in the back). CONS: can't think of any! if this place can satisfy my restaurant-averse, picky, asian mom, you know it's good. =)

Disregarding everything I ever learned from Anthony Bourdain, we went out for sushi on a Monday night. And what we ordered was delicious. The nigiri was really yummy - and actually held together after I took a bite (good job Mr. Sushi Chef). The rolls we tried were beautiful and fresh and tasty. I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 4 because I struggled to find something I wanted. It seemed like most of their rolls were either variations on a California roll or loaded down with tempura shrimp or cream cheese. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of fried foods - but I usually choose sushi when I want something lighter. And that was a little tougher to find on their sushi menu.

This was our go to sushi place when we lived in Louisville. Everything is fresh and the rolls are amazing! Service is great. I highly recommend the "Sunday Morning Roll" and the "Jennifer Roll." Extremely good sushi. They seem to focus on specialty rolls and I had to ask for a spicy scallop roll as it wasn't on the menu. Then the chef forgot to flip over the order to see the sushi order on the other side. But when we got the rolls we were in sushi heaven. The lobster roll was great and the Diablo was pretty good (the lobster roll was so memorable). Our appetizer came out for dessert as the kitchen forgot about it, but the Gyoza was fantastic as well. Like most (almost all actually) sushi places they use the fake wasabi as the real stuff is $$$ but for the prices they charge, they should do it. I usually don't comment on prices but the rolls here are $2 more than other places in bi-state area. However if cost isn't an issue, this is where to go in the Kentuckiana area. They lost a star for screwing up the order and for using fake wasabi (unacceptable for a great sushi place).

We love eating here, and we always sit at the sushi bar. The sushi guys are funny and friendly. Usually, Hiko (the owner) is behind the sushi bar, as well. We always order a small house salad (great ginger dressing) and the fried rice comes in a mega bowl, so order accordingly. I like the tuna tataki; it is divine. I also love the shrimp tempura and it comes with veggies, but I like the onion rings only so they happily comply and bring the shrimp and onion rings with ponzu sauce (which is cold BTW). Their bar is very well stocked with top named brands, and their pours are pretty generous. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent selection of sushi and a locally-owned "Louisville Originals" restaurant to boot! I found the menu to be almost overwhelming, but finally decided on a Bluegrass roll, which I absolutely recommend. I've been here a few times, and every time the service has been fast, the food has tasted fresh, and I've enjoyed my experience. Not much more to say, solid sushi joint and a good place to share a meal with a friend and master using chopsticks!

For the points I was staying at some dump Mariott near this place. The reviews seemed good--"owned by Japanese people"--so i tried the place. Wow--they have their own retail fish market--everything was excellent--fish, maki rolls, hot dishes--great offering for Scotch at a cheap price. Although I don't expect to be in this area soon, I would look forward to eating here!!

As a big fan of Japanese food, this is my favorite stop in Louisville. Though I've never been to Japan, it has a feeling of authenticity. If you're expecting to see the typical rigmarole you get at most hibachi grills, you'll be disappointed. This is the place to go for those of us who enjoy the good food without all the fireworks. I've had many of the sushi rolls and several of the hibachi offerings. So far there's nothing I wouldn't recommend.

For my boyfriend's birthday we decided to visit Hiko-a-Mon off of Westport Rd, because it's recently made his top 10 favorite sushi restaurants in Louisville, KY and I'd have to say that I'm very happy with our experience here. As soon as we sat down, the sushi chefs were very pleasant and greeted us nicely, as well as made some small chit chat with us (which we love). To begin our meal, we started off with a bottle of Sake, a glass of their filtered apple Sake, and the salmon sashimi. Our waiter was very patient with us and went through the entire drink menu until we had made our selections, including answering a few questions as well. Once we had decided on what we wanted to try, both our waiter and sushi chefs had our selections out to us very quickly. Both Sake's were very delicious, but what we were especially impressed with the salmon sashimi. We received 7 pieces for $10.00 and they were absolutely delectable, as well as moderately big in size, which made us very happy, especially in consideration of the price which we considered to be a steal (but don't tell Hiko-a-Mon we said that)! For the dinner portion of the meal, we ended up trying their green tea, two Las Vegas rolls, and a Jennifer roll. Getting green tea is a favorite, and a must, of mine at Japanese restaurants. It ended up being quite traditional and nothing too special, but "simply" delicious. The rolls on the other hand were quite special. The Las Vegas roll is a favorite of my boyfriends, so it was an absolutely MUST for us to try theirs and it was fantastic! They provided us with a lot of pieces and some were quite large which really pleased my boyfriend. They also gave us with extra sauce, upon our request, which we loved considering other restaurants that we have been to sometimes don't even have plated sauce. The Jennifer roll was also quite a surprise as well. We were a little nervous about it considering the American name, but it wasn't eclectic at all and soothed our appetites. Overall, I'd say Hiko-a-Mon has a lot going for it. Not only is their food delicious, but the rolls are large enough to enjoy yourself and the pricing is perfect! Typically my boyfriend and I have to limit ourselves when we go out to eat because of the $14 and $15 special rolls that we like to get, but this place has a variety of sushi at VERY reasonable prices, making us much more willing to buy more food. I would definitely recommend this sushi restaurant to sushi lovers. If you're into delicious food, proper portion sizes, and friendly staff, then this is the place for you! Dig.

We first visited Hiko-a-Mon in the fall of 2009. We were pleased with the experience. The sake selection was decent, the fish was fresh, and the service was fine. The ambiance was minimal, clean and modern. Having already visited a few other sushi places in Louisville, we decided that Hiko-a-Mon was our favorite so far. However, we didn't visit again until September of 2010, and the second experience did not live up to the first. Generally, the service was good and sake selection was still fine. However, we were quite disappointed by the quality of the Toro nigiri. Toro is a real treat- it is often the most expensive selection on the menu as the fatty belly of the bluefin tuna. Normally, it's buttery, clean and simply delicious. The Toro at Hiko-a-Mon had a fishy taste and gristly texture, and was much darker in color than any Toro I have seen. At $6 per piece, this was a real disappointment. However, the bluegrass roll was beautiful and delicious, and the other rolls and salads were also good. All-in-all, I consider Hiko-a-Mon to be a decent place to get sushi in Louisville. I continue to search for great sushi in this city.

Holy fresh sushi!!! This is the best sushi I've had since I left Los Angeles. I got spoiled out there and knew it would be difficult coming back to Louisville as far as sushi goes, but I've found a few gems here. Two days ago, my regular date and I decided to stop in for a quick, late lunch. We had only been for dinner previously and didn't know what was available for lunch. I opted for the Sashimi lunch and he for the Bento Box. We also got a Philadelphia roll for good measure. Both lunches came with a cup of miso soup and a small salad. Both of these were very good. The salad dressing was a peanut / ginger dressing that was delicious. The Bento Box was HUGE for the price! There was a small chicken breast teriyaki (high quality chicken - not pounded thin and almost unrecognizable, like at many Asian restaurants), a small salmon teriyaki filet (probably about 3 oz), 2 shrimp shumai dumplings, three pieces of sashimi, assorted tempura (veggies and shrimp). Both lunches also came with a side of white rice (which could be swapped for fried rice for an upcharge). My Sashimi Lunch was also a great size for the price. I had three pieces each of red tuna (my favorite) and super white tuna (creamy, buttery, lemony goodness), and two pieces of salmon and albacore. Usually, albacore is my favorite sashimi, but I think I have been reformed. I am usually not a big fan of salmon sashimi (I like it in rolls or in a salad, but not on its own), but this salmon was really delicious. The Philadelphia roll is made with smoked salmon, which I don't generally like (and hadn't ordered this roll here before BECAUSE of the fact that it is made with smoked salmon), but it was really good. It was just barely smoked, which gave it a nice flavor, but the smokiness wasn't too strong. Their featured cocktails at the moment are with Chambord's flavored vodka. I had a martini which was just barely flavored with the Chambord and was really yummy. The service is always friendly. The sushi chef didn't mind me staring (as I am known to do) while he worked. He did look up a few times, to make sure I didn't need anything.

After just returning from a two year hiatus in California, I have found it necessary to re-review this great place. Very excellent Japanese restaurant and Sushi Bar. I have not been disappointed on any of my recent trips here. They really know what they are doing and they do it quite well. I love Sushi and learned to eat it from some great native Japanese Sushi Chefs and this place is as good as it gets in an inland area of the country. They really rock the food and sushi here. I have always found service to be beyond excellent as well.

I have had good experience with the restaurant before until today. My wife and I went for lunch and she ordered beef teriyaki. The waitor asked her how she likes to haher beef prepared and she said medium/rare. When the beef came out it was so overlooked and cold. Anyone can tell it was prepared long before we went. NOT HONEST AND FAIR!

Chef Hiko is the only Japanese trained sushi chef in Louisville. If that is not enough of a reason to try Hiko-a-Mon, then you must hate sushi. The rolls are always fresh, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is modern and clean, and the wait staff is usually on point. On top of that, they have an amazing house salad (with house made ginger dressing) and Sapporo on draft. Win, win, win.

My friend lives in the neighborhood and this is her favorite sushi place. I went there with her for the first time last night. It was a Saturday night around 7:30; as restaurant industry veterans, we should have known better, but it just so happened to be when we were hungry. The obviously cranky hostess quoted us a time of 25 minutes. Not a problem; we'd wait. About 10 minutes later we were told that seats at the sushi bar were open, and we took them. As soon as we sat, we were eager to order. Both of us got the house salads --- absolutely delicious dressing. However, I ordered the large and my friend got the small, and they looked like the same amount of lettuce but in two different bowls. That was kind of disappointing. We shared the ebi mayo and crab avocado gratin. The ebi mayo were absolutely delicious - lightly fried, a good, late heat. The 'gratin' on the other hand... it was nothing like what the name implies. Also, we didn't see our server from shortly after the time we ordered to about 20 minutes later, after being just about finished with our appetizers with no drinks for about 10 minutes. That was annoying. Our sushi took awhile, but it was understandable given the time of night. We shared 3 rolls - wayy too much, it turned out. We got the crunch munch, las vegas, and tornado. The crunch munch was awesome - nothing too fancy and everything you'd want it to be. The las vegas was a bit too much; it had a really odd mushy texture that I couldn't really get past. The tornado was very unique and delicious. We had to wait for to go sushi for her boyfriend, so we split dessert (even though we had tons of leftovers..). We got mochi in chocolate, mango, & strawberry. The chocolate was my favorite. The mango was good, too, but the strawberry tasted a little too synthetic. Overall, the food was good, though the sushi was a bit gimmicky. I think if I were to go back, I would try some of the other hot food, and some of the more basic roll options. The service killed the rating though. Our server disappeared for large periods of time, and none of the other staff seemed to notice our blatant need for service (ie: water!). There are like 4 other desserts on the menu that caught my eye, so I'm thinking I'll have to go back.

My sister and I went here after a recommendation from her husband's friends who are Japanese. This seems to be the place in town where they take other Japanese people while they're visiting. We went during lunch time and it was practically empty so we got our food fast. We all seemed to enjoy our food; I had the Manhattan roll and the Crunch Munch. She had shrimp udon and enjoyed it as well. Check out the restrooms - the seats are heated! This is the only Japanese restaurant I've been to that has went so far to make you feel like you're in Japan. I'm a fan!

We have always been seated immediately upon arrival.

the best thing about this place was the atmosphere. the lights are dim and the decor has an authentic Japanese feel. the food, however, was a little better than average.

Enjoy!!

Fun!

Good atmosphere and friendly service. They did try their best, The sushi was not good. I unfortunately, had to send it back:( I never have sent sushi back before. They kindly took it off my check. On a high note...the ramen was good. Still looking for a tasty sushi place around this land locked area.

Extremely good sushi.

I'm a fan!

This is one of my favorite sushi resturants in Louisville. The sushi is prepared really well, the quality of the seafood is top notch, and there is a nice selection of sushi to choose from. This place is definitely worth checking out.
