Just an update. It appears that they have fixed the server issues, and this is officially a decent brunch spot finally. I can't attest to their xmas music taste, tbd.

My boyfriend and I decided to take a short trip to Bellarmine University to visit some friends and we wanted to grab some breakfast in Louisville before we were Ohio bound and back to Dayton-life. After a little bit of research, Highland Morning seemed liked the ideal match for us since the majority of restaurants in Highland are $$$(yikes!). The shop was quaint, cute, and hipster-esque (like most of Highland is) and thankfully not packed. We were prompted to choose our own seat by a friendly server who then proceeded to give us water and let us know our server would be right with us. We both ordered coffee (rich and luscious) that was served with real cream; I ordered their "bets-selling item" the baja benedict ($9) and upgraded for the skillet potatoes instead of grits (yuck!) and my man ordered the full order of biscuits n' gravy ($6). I was in love with my breakfast, I've never eaten chorizo before and I'm sad I haven't until now; the chorizo as flavorful and salty and complimented the eggs and the corncakes swimmingly and the skillet potatoes were well seasoined(my only complaint would be is that the avocado was under-ripe and due to it being summer that should be nonexistent). Connor loved his biscuits and gravy and I did agree that they were tasty but they did come out cold in my opinion. All in all we got a great, filling breakfast to satisfy us on the ride home for $23 which makes me a happy lady!!

2 stars for service, 5 stars for food. There was a fifteen minute wait, which we expected from the reviews. However, there was ANOTHER fifteen minute wait once we were seated. My dad had to finally get up and (nicely) let the server know that we wanted to order. Granted the place was slammed, but I didn't feel like she checked on us enough. A super weird thing -- they had supply delivery that morning. And the guy didn't come through the back. So all through breakfast, guys kept wizzing past our table delivering boxes to the kitchen. One would think Saturday morning is not the best day to do this. I kept worrying they'd drop something on us. The food was extremely good though. The pecan waffles had perfectly toasted and sugar coated meaty pecans on top. The biscuits and gravy were as good as Mom's (a huge accolade). I got the steak and eggs. Steak was cooked perfectly medium as ordered -- suprising in a breakfast joint. I would go back, just a bit before I was actually hungry.

UPDATE: They recently bought out Ultra Pop and expanded. I have increased stars. to reflect this. No word on if service has gotten better. But no more waiting outside for a seat. This is a fine example of a business crushing it's self under it's own success. The food is fantastic and fresh and good portion sizes. However the place is usually horridly busy it is clear they need to expand to meet demand. You cannot serve 30 people in a room only meant for 15. But the problem also stems from the waiters and waitresses. It depends on who you get. Not at peek hours you can have a fantastic experiences with an attentive waiter. Or you could go long periods of waiting for a refill or the check. We never got a refill our whole meal once. So my warning to the highland morning shape up expand and get some better staff or ship out.

This place use to be one of my favorite 'must-go' local breakfast places. However, the last few times I've been here, it's been extremely disappointing; the Baja and other dishes lacked flavor, period. What happened??

I am one of those people that really wanted to like Highland Morning...I live right around the corner and this would have made an excellent breakfast stop. Alas this is not to be...I've given it a couple of chances and my experience this past weekend was unfortunately one that has squelched any desire to return. I guess I'll get some practice making my own Nutella and strawberry waffles. Melissa and I went out for breakfast this past Saturday at at my request. At first it seemed like it was going to be a good meal. Our waitress was very talkative which initially I took as a good thing, unfortunately this was not the case, as talkative became chatty. We were initially brought someone else's order and it took several moments of us shaking our head before the server bringing the food realized they had the wrong table. Then they brought Melissa one pancake instead of the two she had ordered, and though she told our server it was fine the server insisted on bringing her a new plate out anyways. She also repeatedly came by to ask us how we are doing while not allowing us time to enjoy our breakfast, I understand that it is a popular place and they want to get more people in, however as a customer I do not appreciate feeling rushed through a meal. Yet even this was something I could still look over to a degree. The pièce de résistance came when I was assisting Melissa in eating her pancakes as she wasn't able to eat about half of them all since they were larger than her head and she didn't want to waste money, I moved them to my side of the table and was taking my time savoring them, While in the middle of taking a bite one lady attempted to take the plate away and I had to inform her I wasn't finished, Shortly after as I was taking a bite again our server reached to grab the plate and i had to reach for it to keep her from taking it while I was in the middle of eating. When I informed her that I was not finished she literally said "Good for you" and patted me on the arm like I was a child. To say I was taken aback would be an understatement, I am a 35 year old man with a graduate education and I was just treated by waitstaff at a local eatery like a prepubescent child because I wasn't ready for her to take a dish away. As we left we actually had to squeeze in between tables of people and dodge waitstaff because it was so full and Melissa made the observation that it didn't appear that this locale is handicapped friendly. The quality of the food is the only reason I am rating this higher than one star. I am disappointed by the waitstaff and the locale in general for providing what was truly a sub-par experience.

5 stars for the food, the setting, the great prices. Absolutely love this place for those reasons. So much so, that I am willing to put up with the spotty service (3 stars at most). This place is great and people know it - it's always busy. So why don't they hire more or better wait staff? They could use either a superstar or two who can truly handle the whole room, or some extras if they want to have the lower quality (still friendly, just not as efficient) servers. Example, I was in on a Thursday morning at 10am, and took the only open table. There was literally only one waitress working (there are probably 15 or so tables in there?). There was an assistant delivering coffee and food, and another who was doing the bussing. As I sat waiting patiently for the waitress to stop, I observed her apologizing to another table for their wait, and having an issue with another table who must have been trying to pay their bill in Euros. Who knows. It took over 20 minutes for me to get my order in for biscuits & gravy (the best around, hands down) and the grits of the day, but it was worth the wait when the food came out less than 10 minutes later, hot, fresh, and fantastic. My friends and I have tried other similarly excellent choices, like the nutella waffle stack with fresh berries, the lemon pancakes, the baja benedict. Bottom line - top notch breakfast joint, if you are willing to wait a little bit and put up with average service. I probably should dock at least one star for the service, but looking at some of the other reviews, I really wanted to give these guys a 5 b/c it's a great place. The naysayers can stay home next time and leave open tables for the locals!

I'm sad this place has 2 1/2 stars. It's really good. Really is. The Baka Benedict is my favorite. Especially after a night of drinking. Squeezed OJ. Large waffles! Super fun. Wait is long but I think it's worth it. Really. Cut highland morning some slack y'all

I'm currently sitting here in Highland Morning trying to churn out a few more hours of work before calling it a day. It's my 2nd time here, the first being pretty rushed. My first visit we had the egg sandwich and biscuits and gravy... both not revolutionary dishes and found almost anywhere, but very well done. There are only three tables, myself included. One of the other tables is a single diner like myself. I'm surprised at how weeded the server seems. My hot chocolate was forgotten, which he later apologized for and blamed on the bartender that has now left the building. However, he never brought me a water or checked to see if I received it. They later brought me one on the house however, and it was delicious. I got Joey's grilled cheese and the grits of the day. Again, not super original combos but really well done. Bread isn't greasy, the veggies are fresh, and nothing is over salted. They use some local ingredients including Purnell and Kenny's Cheese..The grilled cheese could use a little something else.. maybe a dusting of garlic or something. Really happy to have a place to chow on simple food, get a cup of joe, and do some work. They have complimentary wifi. Much better than going to Starbucks. Worth checking out.

I want to love Highland Morning. I really, really do. I've given it more than it's fair share of shots to redeem itself, but it just doesn't seem possible at this point. Being only a few steps from my house I was super excited to have a breakfast place close by as there is nothing better than rolling out of bed on a Sunday morning and walking down Bardstown Rd for a stack of pancakes and some home fries. Since their opening weekend, I have been no less than 7 times, each more disappointing than the last. I so want to see improvement, and the Groupons that are constantly offered keep me returning, but since our first visit not only has the service consistently gotten worse (no hostess in sight, forgotten someones entire order, never offered refills, ect) but the food has also gone down hill. The once fluffy, too big for your plate pancakes have gotten smaller and smaller, the homefries are continuously burnt and the sandwiches could be made better at home. I think i've finally reached my breaking point. You wont see this girl patronizing Highland Morning any time in the near future and I have advised several friends to do the same. I'd rather take the extra time and head to Toast on Market or Wild Eggs, at least the wait at these establishments is well worth it for the quality of food you receive.

Seriously, guys, I love you. I love the coffee, the massive pancakes, the cheesy sauce that is smothered on anything with eggs, the tomato soup and grilled cheese, especially when you could get it at 2am. I love the photographs of locals on the wall. Speaking of locals, the favoritism to only familiar customers is something I don't love. When we arrived recently, we were informed of the expected 20 minute wait. No worries. I'm used to it. However, what I was not used to was three couples/groups that arrived after us, clearly so since they checked in with the hostess and we told the same: 20 minutes. There was no Day's coffee cups in hand as if they had been waiting next door to be called while enjoying the warmth. Ten minutes later they were given a seat. This happened two more times for me to realize not only was I waiting much longer than expected, but also, if I had been a "regular", I would have been seated 15 minutes earlier and precisely at the 20 minute mark. Let me stress that this is not about the wait time, it's about favoritism. What defines a "regular" to your staff? My husband and I have been to Highland Morning at least 10 times, including the morning after we were married. The funny thing is, I'm not sure the "regulars" are going to appreciate this "favoritism" in the long run, since after we were seated, I noticed that two of the sets of couples were placed together at the same table, uncomfortably so since neither of them knew each other, and were sitting on edge of their seats with legs turned away from the other couple, uneasily sipping their coffee.

The food was average. Service was turtle slow and honestly, just a total lack of attention to anything. They had some issue with their alcohol license, so we weren't able to order any breakfast cocktails all the alcohol was still displayed on the shelves above the bar. I found that interesting. This doesn't even deserve a full review. I won't waste my time here again! I'll drive a few blocks down to somewhere better...and with a staff that at least looks somewhat alive.

my sister and i went to highland morning last weekend for lunch and while the wait came as no surpise (we poked around edenside gallery). the disappointing food and service did. seeing this place perpetually busy suggested to me a meal to look forward to. Instead, we were squeezed into two available stools at the bar and handed menus to peruse. we were served our drinks promptly as we placed our orders, though i had to ask twice for lemon for my tea. my sister and i enjoyed catching up. we had all kinds of time to chat as our food seemed to languish in the kitchen. eventually it was brought to us by a food runner, our waitress was nowhere in sight. we had no one to ask for the usual condiments, such as salt, pepper, butter, jam etc. my food was far from hot and the longer i had to wait for a little butter for my biscuit, the colder it all got. i think the thing that was the most off-putting to me was listening to our waitress gloat about how rude she was capable of being because she's from new jersey. seriously? is this really appropriate information to share in front of tipping customers??

If I had to choose one meal to have forever, it would be the classic breakfast at Highland Morning. They do everything right. I am not easy to please, but I can find nothing about which to complain except that I don't live nearby. Thank you, HM. You've the best!

I've heard that the food at Highland Morning is amazing - so I gave it a shot. I'm really not one to write negative reviews, but I feel like I need to warn you. I went with my boyfriend and we literally waited 15 minutes JUST FOR WATER AND COFFEE. Then, we place our orders when the drinks arrive, and we wait for another 50 minutes before asking a waitress about our food. She apologizes, says it will be out in 5 minutes, and we wait another 10 minutes and STILL NO FOOD. No one apologized or, actually, even acknowledged that they had basically ignored us for over an hour. We actually just ended up leaving because of the miserable service so I can't even speak to the quality of the food. I recommend that the owner/chef hire some people who actually care about his restaurant's image and service.

The absolute best omelettes we've ever had! I always get the Ultimate Veggie omelette and have them sub (South Beach diet approved) Parmesan cheese. We were happy to see they had expanded dining area into the building next door. Had a delightful server who kept our coffees warm!

Even after reading the cons about the service and wait here, I still wanted to try the food. So, my guy and I came down last Saturday. Similar to Lisa J's experience, we were told 20 minute wait - we waited nearly 45. They do not turn tables over quickly! There was a semi-regular stream of people coming out, and tables seated very slowly. Pretty disappointing that they haven't figured out a better system, like, I don't know...honesty? But don't worry, once you sit down, the service doesn't pick up the pace. Decide on your order quickly (better yet, decide while you're waiting so you can order right away as you're seated). We got a pitcher of OJ to share, which was a good call so we could get the blood sugar back up while we continued to wait for our meal. I got one bourbon apple pancake, and one lemon blueberry pancake. Both were "meh", nothing special. There was not an apple to be found on the plate, so not sure what happened to the apples! I also got grits of the day, which were really tasty. My guy got the Wake Me Up Omelet, and it was good (especially the queso!), but the chorizo was so mild! Louisville just does not know how to spice chorizo, it seems. Anyway, I'd consider the food "okay", but not worth my time in waiting. Their slogan is "breakfast done right", which, after all these months in business, they should consider changing to "breakfast done pretty slowly".

You'll have to go for brunch, because the wait for breakfast is always about 45 mins. This little breakfast nook is almost too popular for it's own good! My boyfriend and I took a Groupon that allowed us to try an entree and two sides. You could see all the staff pulling there weight, but we still waited more then decent time for our food to come out and refills were scarce. Now that I am passed the flaws, I still gave this place four stars because it is well worth the wait! You get to add any fruit into your pancakes, had amazing portions, and was super tasty. I had the burrito and my boyfriend had the Santa Fe eggs Benedict. Both had great flavor and were delicious. I am sure if we had gone during a non rush hour period then it would have been the perfect place for Sunday breakfast.

While I finished what was on my plate and left full I certainly wasn't satisfied. Breakfast for 4 came to $60 bucks without the tip. For someone who eats real butter and buys good quality pork sausage, I was disappointed with the margarine and cheap, small portioned sausage ($3 bucks for 2 patties). The waffles were $8.00 with no offerings of side items at a discounted price. Iced tea was $2.50 and the grits were $3.00 for a tiny bowl. The staff was friendly and attentive in such a small space but overall I don't feel like paying the price of being on Bardstown Road to eat just okay food.

This is the second time I have tried this restaurant for breakfast and I am thoroughly unimpressed. I don't understand what the big hype is about. While the restaurant did expand to the facility next door and now has more seating, the food is just mediocre at best. Our service was terrible as well. I ordered a hot chocolate as a drink and never received it (but rest assured that it was on the bill at the end of our dining experience!). The waiter never came back to ask us if we needed anything throughout -- just took our order and then came back at the end to give us our check. I ordered the "Loop" egg sandwich. The egg was slightly cold, the cheese on top of it wasn't really melted and was possibly the smallest piece of cheese I have ever encountered. There was very little flavor to it and quite honestly, I can make a tastier egg sandwich at home. I requested the skillet potatoes as a side and was told that they ran out of them earlier, so I got the fruit cup instead. After I paid the bill and was walking out, I saw multiple tables that had, lo and behold, piping hot skillet potatoes on their plate! Instead of saying that they were out of potatoes, the server SHOULD have said that it was going to take some extra time to make those and ask if I wanted to wait on them. My boyfriend got their version of the Kalamity Katy's dish (from Wild Eggs) and it was just ok. Even though you have to wait a while at Wild Eggs and Toast, go there instead for breakfast because you still have to wait at this place too. I left hungry (the egg sandwich and fruit cup was a very small portion) and fairly angry at the whole experience. I really wanted to like this place since it is so close to my boyfriend's house (easy to walk there) and we love breakfast, but I won't be going back.

I don't want to say the food was bad because it wasn't, but I'd say much of the hype is due to location, location, location. Everyone liked what they got & the coffee was coffeehouse quality. service was good too. We didn't have to wait & it was Easter Sunday morning right after St. James mass. So, I know a lot of reviews say "waited so long," but how many of those people came the opening month & complained about waiting?

Only had breakfast there once, but the Baja Benedict is OUTSTANDING!! I am a bit surprised at the less than glowing reviews if this place. Service was friendly and prompt, environment is tasteful and simple, food was great. I will be back!

I occasionally eat breakfast here with my hubby. The food is good. I have managed to try something new every-time I go. My hubby prefers to eat the pancakes which he is very impressed by. Looking for a place to sit can at times be challenging but they usually have someone greet you at the door when there are no more tables. It can get a bit snug so I prefer sitting at the window. The window is out of the way and offers lots of space. I did sit out side but it does not offer any shade so I was constantly squinting. If you are looking to grab something quick I would advise going elsewhere. But if you are looking for good inexpensive food then be prepared to arrive early for seating or wait awhile.

This morning I was served water immediately and my order was taken as soon as I was ready to give it. I waited about 15 minutes for the food which didn't surprise me since the dining room was packed. I was asked if I wanted more water and when the food came we were asked if we needed hot sauce, ketchup, anything else. Then we were asked if the food tasted okay about 3 minutes later. My friend turned down the hot sauce but asked for it half way through her omelet and it was brought within 90 seconds. Very smiley waiter. Maybe he's new. I had the Baja Benedict. Masa harina cakes well grilled but not chewy topped with poached eggs, soy chorizo, and a pico de gallo made of red onion, avocado, peppers, cilantro, tomato, chives and parsley. The grits were plain with chives on top. No problem. Delicious and I kept looking at my plate to see what they tasted like. I wish it was at the cafe in my neighborhood in Philly. As a Louisvillian, I was happy to see the famous Louisvillians on the wall including My Morning Jacket, Mary Martin, Nappy Roots, Diane Sawyer, etc. I do not work for or know the people who run this place.

While the space is very small, the food is amazing!!! The grits (which consist of a large variety) and the other daily specials are always great items. The food is priced very reasonable which I love. I could eat here everyday for breakfast.

It may be the best breakfast place in the Highlands. I've had the Wake Me Up Omelet with skillet potatoes, and it was spicy and flavorful. It's a three egg omelet stuffed with chorizo, jalapenos, bell peppers, onions and pepper-jack cheese topped with queso fundido, chipotle sour cream, pico de gallo and green onions. My wife had the eggs benedict and french toast, and she cleaned her plate. I tasted the french toast and it had great texture with a nice hit of cinnamon. The garlic and 4 cheese grits she had a side was great and needed no extra salting. The wait can be long and the service slow, but the service is actually good otherwise, and the food is worth it. I cannot comment on consistency as I have only been there once, but I plan to go back repeatedly.

The quality of food is good, I was in there once and a row of farmers came marching in the front door with their arms filled with fresh eggs. However, service is generally slow, and they favor regulars and large groups, regardless of how long you've been waiting. I saw a family with a small child who was waiting 10 minutes to order, then their waiter left to go get an iPad out of his car (4 blocks away) that a regular had left their the other day. I commend them for being so good to the regulars, but spread the love. Service issues aside, the food is good, though a little pricy. Nothing terrible, nothing amazing about this place. I haven't quite figured out why people wait outside 45 minutes.

Giving a (hopefully) temporary bad rating and a follow-up I'd hoped I'd not have to write here... I've been a loyal customer since their opening--most of the staff is really friendly and usually recognizes me, and the food is still usually really tasty. I had a bad experience with one waitress a few weeks ago, however, that has turned me off of Highland Morning for the time being. After taking her sweet time to even acknowledge I'd entered the restaurant (and yes, she saw me), this waitress finally came over to take my drink order. When a group of four came in at the same time and asked if they could push a couple of tables together, she said, "no...but you can push THESE together," gesturing at the table where I was sitting. So...yeah. She moved me to a different table, which was bad form, but I dealt with it...until she abandoned me there to go take the drink orders of another table full of people who had been sitting there the entire time I had been in the restaurant. I was appalled for them and, realizing I wasn't going to get waited on anytime soon (much less get any sort of reparatory discount), I got up and left. As I said, the rest of the staff is usually competent and friendly, but every time I've had this waitress, she's forgotten about my table. This was my last straw with her and, thus, with Highland Morning. I really hope she gets it together because I miss their food and would like to start giving them high ratings again. I just can't bring myself to go in there again anytime soon. Sad.

When I go to a popular new restaurant during peak brunch hours, I expect there to be a wait. I bring a book, but I generally don't get bent out of shape if I have to stand around for a while. It's nice when a restaurant (for instance, Wild Eggs) provides some coffee or drinks while you wait, but not required - Highland Morning certainly didn't extend this courtesy. What WILL get me bent out of shape is being told "25 minutes" and then waiting 50 minutes instead. My bad mood is guaranteed to continue after I'm seated when it takes more than 10 additional minutes to get water to me. Still, in spite of the hour it took to get the first sip of coffee into me, I was prepared to be blown away by the food and forgive it all. Alas, this was not to be. I ordered the breakfast burrito with breakfast potatoes on the side. The potatoes were so under cooked that the insides were crunchy. The burrito was supposed to come with a sauce and avocado on top, but there was almost none of either of these things. The egg inside the burrito was tasty, but the beef tasted a little weird - I guess the marinade didn't do it for me. My companion ordered the biscuits and gravy; they were good, but not worth the wait. The restaurant's one saving grace (and the reason they get 2 starts instead of 1) is that the waiter bothered to ask how my meal was, and listen very nicely while I told him the things about the meal that disappointed me. I didn't get my coffee on the house, but maybe they'll take the feedback to heart and improve. Anyway, the bottom line is that I certainly won't be back to Highland Morning any time soon. Maybe when they've had some more time to get their act together I'll give it another try... around midnight, when there won't be a line.

Right down the street from my apartment, I was thrilled when this place opened up. As always, local, chill atmosphere that Louisville is so good for. The first time I went they had only been open for a couple weeks, so while the service was mediocre, the food was great and the location convenient - I let it slide. We went again a couple months later and it was about 10 in the morning on a Sat, still busy, but not quite as bad. The first thing the entire table ordered was coffee with various dilutions (what can I say - we aren't a morning group) and the answer was we're out. Okay, cool. "So making more?" we ask. "Actually it is broken"..."So will there be coffee this morning?" we ask, wondering if we should walk next door to Highland Coffee. "It should be fixed soon." So we order food, and wait. After about 20 minutes we flag the waitress down and one of the guys ask if they still have the coffee press that is on the menu. Yes. We laugh on the inside and order the more expensive coffee that she hadn't thought to mention, that they didn't discount. Alas, it was gooood coffee. As was the food. I've now tried the Lemon Lover's pancakes, which were pleasantly unique, sweet, but not too sweet; the Baja Benedict and the Fried Egg Sandwich. All quite yummy. So, don't let the so-so service scare you away, just be ready for it to take a bit longer than breakfast/brunch usually would, but at really reasonable prices, and right in the heart of the Highlands.

I stopped in here after an early morning interview at Day's and it was delicious. I miss my favorite breakfast place in Lexington and this easily filled the void, if only it was close to my house. I had an omelet and the skillet potatoes, it was all good. My only wish was that the potatoes were a little crispier. I will definitely be back!

I do like this restaurant, or at least I really want to like it. The first time I went, I had a great experience, no wait, good food attentive waiter. Today there still was no wait, by the server Joey was horrible. He took our order in a timely manner. But when he brought out the food we realized he got the order wrong. He never got back to check on us, ask how the food was, refill coffee, bring us condiments or discover that he messed up the order. Will I go back? Maybe. The food is good when the server gets it right, but expensive when your not satisfied.

Giving it 3 stars for the nice server and the fresh orange juice. The place is small so expect a wait at peak times. I had the breakfast burrito which was a bit of a mess. It was served luke warm and the tortilla was quite crusty. Inside were maybe 4 pieces of well done steak and a jumble of vegetables that were in huge hunks. The potatoes on the side were average at best. We got a side of french toast to share for a bit of something sweet and it was absolutely disgusting. The butter on top was salted and it made the whole dish taste overwhelmingly salty. I think there was already syrup on it because they didn't bring out or offer any. But yeah, unless you're into savory french toast, don't bother. I much prefer Wild Eggs over this place any day.

  • Jeff B.

Unlike many reviews, we didnt have to wait for a seat at breakfast this morning. That and the orange juice were by far the best things this spot had to offer. The food was very, very bland. Way beyond needing a little salt, too. My wife's wake me up omelet had some flavor, only because of the jalapenos to compliment the burnt eggs. I had a benedict that had corn cakes, chorizo, eggs that were poached pretty well, and zero flavor. I'm not even sure how to pull that off. The service is where it really went wrong, though. We were greeted, the food came, and we got the check. Those are the times we saw our waiter. Other tables, too, had to get up to get their own refills. Bad enough for anything, but for coffee? I don't drink it, but I know the people who do don't care to wait for it. Waste of time, other than to cross this place off our list for sure. Too bad, had such high hopes...

Visited Highland Morning for the first time today with my Groupon. Service was good, food was AWFUL. The only thing good I can say is that I did not have to pay the full cost for this meal, because I would have been greatly disappointed. Very crowded, and very loud. Would not recommend to anyone. Not worth the cost or the wait in my opinion. Could have had the same terrible meal for half the price at a local Denny's.

When you wait 35 minutes to sit down you're ready eat. So when it then takes over 30 minutes after you've ordered to receive your eggs & sausage w/ homefries and toast , no matter how good it is (and it was good), you're bummed. The service here needs to be much better because it doesn't take 30 minutes to cook eggs & sausage.

This is a wonderful new establishment for a city that lacks good breakfast places! The eggs benedict was very well done however the grits were very authentic and the best part of the meal. The owners actually know where all the meat comes from locally and seem to strive for locally produced ingredients. Highly recommend for a low key local place.

Went there after the 1/2 marathon at about 11am on a Saturday. The area was busy with all of the derby events going on and the restaurant seemed like they were just not ready for the crowds. Service was doing their best but they seemed overwhelmed. Tables sat for 10+ minutes before being bussed. The bartender looked like a top and I thought that she might fall over. However, the food was really really good and the staff was definately very nice. Once they get thru the adjustment period of being open and derby crowds calming down, they will be an awesome addition to the highlands. Waiting a few months before we go back and we will also try to get there before 10am and beat the crowds.

Not worth it. Server was absent minded at best, half of a portion of the recommended egg dish gave me bodily distress for most of the day. (Food was not filling but caused aching and stomach upset, maybe my fault for ordering the particular dish) The food was also flavorless and unappetizing in presentation, really a hillock presented on two dishes. The wait for the food was reasonable, but afterward I was in no mood to wait 20 minutes for the wait staff to stop ignoring my apparent signals for the bill or clearing. Also, incredibly disgruntled cookstaff continued to walk through the dining room to leave the restaurant. I recognize that my food is generally prepared by some unsavory characters but the dignity of this particular restaurant was sacrificed by noisy and obtrusive cookstaff brushing past diners' seats and impassively making a ruckus for the entire meal. That in addition to a helpless wait staff is what you have in store at Highland Morning! Yet the Sysco distributed coffee is organic, though I passed on my visit.

My husband and I were very excited when we heard there was a 24 hour diner opening on bardstown Rd near our home. We went late one night before heading over to a midnight showing at Baxter. To our surprise we arrived to a half hearted welcome. We found out after sitting down that they close at 11pm (we arrived at 10:45ish) and will not be open 24 hours until the week of Derby. When we apologized and explained that their facebook and yelp account says open 24 hours they simply told us that it was wrong and that they were only open until 11. I looked for a sign on the door stating their hours and found none. I was disappointed that they made us feel as though we were wrong when it was their sites that said they were open 24 hours. The way the staff handled the situation in the beginning made for a very awkward dining experience. With that being said the waitress did encourage us to stay after we asked for our food to go and was friendly. The food was great. I ordered a scramble and my husband had an omelette, both of which were delicious. We ordered waffles to go and ate the little heavenly clouds in the parking lot of the movie theatre. They were SO good. Once this place goes 24 hours I know that we will be there often.

Had a chace to try Highland Morning after they offered a living social deal too good to turn down. I'm glad they did because the food was very good. I had the Baja Eggs Benedict and my fiancee had Pecan Waffles. The Baja Benedict was delicious with just the right amount of spice. My fiancee was similarly impressed with her order. We went on a Saturday morning and it was crowded, so be prepared to wait.

I went here on a Tuesday morning (around 10am) with my mom before a day of shopping. We were welcomed with warm and friendly service, and seated quickly. We both ordered hot tea and were happy to see that they had a variety of Tazo teas to choose from. I ordered the lemon lover's pancakes, my mom ordered the baja benedict and we split both dishes. The pancakes were delicious and were dense like pound cake. I could have used more blueberries and vanilla sauce, but I think a lot of it soaked into the pancakes giving them their dense texture. Still awesome flavor, definitely recommend. The baja benedict was very tasty as well. The chipotle hollandaise gave the dish a really nice flavor, and the whole thing tasted fresh, without being too heavy. They were out of chorizo, so we asked for canadian bacon instead and didn't really think about it after that - it definitely worked with the other components, and I can only imagine how much better the chorizo would have been. On the side, we had the grits of the day, which included bacon and garlic. They were tasty, but we're not huge grits people so I can't really judge them. The service was quick and friendly throughout the meal. The menu is inventive and there are lots of things I would consider ordering. I look forward to more yummy breakfasts here!

Food was great. Although, the server actually forgot several of the items and brought my Friend the wrong order. I had pancakes with strawberries and pecans. They were cooked perfectly and fluffy. Because it is a new restaurant and the owner came out and apologized we understood. Kinks in service staff would be my biggest area to improve. We'll be back and I hope for a complete experience. Decor=like! Food=good Concept=like! Service=needs improvement Pace=needs improvement (took more than 30 mins for pancakes and French toast)

The food was average. The wait was long for two people, but I guess its to be expected at the peak of the morning and since its such a small space. I saw our waiter texting quite frequently in the corner of the restaurant. He may have had something going on, so we weren't bothered by this, but the fact that he never came back during the whole meal expect to bring the check is a bit bothersome. The black guy who brought us our food was super nice and vert pleasant! My husband ordered the breakfast burrito and I got biscuits and gravy w/ 1 egg and a side of potatoes. The bill was steep considering the quality of food. I know people come on here and trash restaurants all the time, but to be honest I thought our food was comparable to Waffle House. I like Waffle House, but higher prices for similar food is why I must give this place 3 stars. If you do go there to try it for yourself, the fresh squeezed OJ is very good and worth the money! :-)

In a word: Yuck. Not one but two dirty glasses were delivered to me, there were ants on and under the table and when I notified our server, she didn't even apologize. Poor service (though everyone was polite and sweet.) Food was barely so-so; 2 eggs over medium, dry toast and some skillet potatoes which I didn't come closes to finishing and I ALWAYS finish my food. Bad coffee, too. No clue why they're regularly packed.

    (2)
  • Lauren P.

So bad. Pancakes were raw inside and they served them with margarine. Margarine, guys, seriously? Especially when the menu specifically said butter. The service was okay. Two stars because they cooked my eggs the way I ordered them, which is so surprisingly rare.

Bubbly! Perfect word to describe our server and service. I love "Artsy" "Eclectic" restaurants. The tattoos and bright red stained lips of some of the crew screams REAL PEOPLE of all creeds eat here! It was proven just by the various caliber of people who came through the door. Now the food... The Baja Benedict was unbelievably delicious. If you love to try something different and can embrace your inner "foodie" try this. Corn cakes topped with scrambled eggs w/cheese, pico, sliced avacado, and drizzled with lime crema...how could I forget the Chipotle Hollandaise Sauce?! It leaves you trying to gather all of the flavors in one bite which is a bit of a task. Each bite showcases a flavorful burst. Kentucky Pick 3 Omelet as always allows one to be creative as to what they want it to be filled with...jaw smacking buttermilk biscuits was the choice of bread. Our server mentioned they won an award for their gravy which made me say BRING IT! (Literally did a small happy dance as the announcement was made.) I may be wrong however I want to believe the gravy base is light cream. I know butter is used, due to the fact some started settling at the top. I just want to say it was silky with small non threatening pieces of sausage through out. Pepper is present but not overpowering. I see why they won an award. Please take time to visit this gem of Louisville, KY. They are on my radar the next time I visit.

And I thought IHop was good. This place is the bomb! They put a different spin on pancakes, waffles and French toast. Delish!! And huge portions! Particularly the pancakes. We're coming back, next time in Louisville. But I think we may order differently, kind of like what we do in Chinese restaurants: several different items to share. If weather is conducive, sit outside. Despite a packed restaurant, service is quick and cordial.

  • Michael G.

Absolutely impressed with the quality of the food every time I come! The skillet potatoes and biscuits are delicious, and the ingredients in their omelets are fresh and savory. The staff is friendly and fun, and this spot is easily my favorite place in Louisville! It is a tight space and you may have to wait to be seated, but the wait is worth it! If you want a casual and delicious breakfast, look no further than here!

I've been in several times this summer and had excellent service and food each time. They even cater to my pup when I sit outside :)

So first off, I'm usually the person one at a table to ask if someone wants to share plates (order two different dishes so you can try both!) But sometimes, in some places, this rule goes out the window. Highland Morning's Baja Benedict does that to me. It's not that other options couldn't be just as good too, it's just that this meal is that fantastic, every single time. Plus I'm a savory over sweet kinda breakfast gal. And no matter how hard I try, I can't replicate this at home. Pro tip: Sunday mornings are probably the most popular day. If you put your name in, there is often a quick turn around. Head to Day's Coffee next door for a sit down and some caffeine - you probably need it anyway and Highland Morning doesn't care if you bring your coffee cup in when they call you back over.

As my tagline says, I love nothing more than finding a new favorite place every day. Highland Morning makes the cut for me as just one such place. Start your morning right with a visit here. Whether you're craving breakfast food in the form of eggs, omelets, pancakes, or waffles, or you want to veer towards a midday meal with salad, soup, sandwiches, and burgers, Highland Morning is sure to have something that will keep you happy. I was in one of those in-between moods when I went recently. Did I want the breakfast burrito, or the bestselling baja benedict? Or, was I going to go for the one-eyed Jack burger, or the Cherokee Triangle Club? Then again, the salads sounded virtuously delicious, and a wrap might be the thing to hit the spot. It was a tossup right up until the waitress came outside to take our order. (Yes, outdoor seating is available -- another favorite adjunct to my dining experiences). Thankfully, Highland Morning made my decision easier by offering a half and half option: any combination of 2 from a cup of soup, small salad, or half sandwich. I decided on half of a BLT avocado sandwich and (continuing the California theme begun with the avocado), a small Hotel California salad. It turned out to be the perfect meal! I deconstructed my sandwich so that I could enjoy the toasted bread with some of the whipped butter that came with my companion's meal. Without the bread, the textures of crispy bacon, juicy tomato, and creamy avocado mingled together, complemented by the satisfying crunch of the mixed greens of my salad. As far as tastes were concerned, sweet candied pecans perfectly countered the tang of creamy blue cheese and spicy balsamic vinaigrette. Don't hesitate to make your next morning a Highland Morning, and you might also find a new favorite place too!

Pros: -food comes quickly considering how busy they always are -something for everyone on the menu -grits of the day are always fun and different (I had Chicken Quesadilla) -portions are great for the price -decent coffee that you can purchase for your own coffee maker Cons: -almost always a wait but no where to really stand to wait unless you are on the sidewalk -tight space -tables are small and right up against eachother

Friendly staff offers fast service. Food is delicious and filling. I orederd the "Wake me up.omelet", which is a three-legged omelet stuffed with chorizo, jalapenos, bell peppers, onions and pepper jack chese. It's topped with queso fundido, Chipotle sour cream, Pico de Gallo and green onions. Also had a pancake on the side. The pancake was really.good. It had a slightly crispy outer layer and soft interior. I will continue to eat here and check out their other menu options.

So, if you've read any of my previous reviews, you know by now I practically get a high talking about how much I love brunch. I mean, it's the best meal there is. This place did not disappoint. We wandered in here on a dreary Saturday morning. I ordered the Dutch Apple pie waffles. I've never had such delicious waffles. I couldn't stop raving about them. They are a pretty busy restaurant, & there is no room to wait. They asked us to wait at the coffee shop next door, which I found a bit odd. But, nice to see that the coffee shop & Highland Morning could give each other a little bit of clientele? Service was nice. The food is what's going to keep us coming back, though.

It's rare you can walk out of a good Louisville restaurant with a full belly and a wallet only $25 lighter. Highland Morning is our go-to spot for Saturday breakfast or Sunday brunch. While the coffee leaves a little to be desired (it would help to partner with neighbor Days Coffee), the Wake-Me-Up Omlete and Baja Benedict are top notch! Excellent flavors and FRESH! In addition to dining in, we often get "take out" as the place is usually packed. It's a lot easier for us to drive the mile to pick it up then it is to eat in. To me, this is one of the best traditional breakfast spots in Louisville. No frills. Good food. And NOW THEY HAVE BUCKETS OF MIMOSAS!!!

    (4)
  • Joseph T.

What a neat place. The breakfast is just really good. They have a variety of items on the menu. If you prefer a traditional breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausage, etc), then they have it. If you prefer something a little bit different, something you probably can get anywhere else, then they have that too. I went with the Baja Benedict. It's their top seller. Man. What a great item. The eggs are perfect. And I mean perfect. Medium poached, sitting on top of Southwest Corncakes (which is like a cornbread that has a "Southwest" flavor to it). Fantastic. The sauces combined with the potatoes and the corncakes with eggs... It really is a fantastic option. I don't feel like it was worth the $20plus that I paid for it, for my wife and I. I mean, I really enjoy the place. I like the atmosphere, how busy it is, the food, the location... I was just surprised by the bill. I could eat a lot of breakfast places and be equally as satisfied for cheaper. And I suppose this is the one thing keeping it from receiving a 5 star review. I will definitely be back, though. Like it that much.

Wonderful! Definitely coming back here! We went at peak time Saturday morning and although it was super busy we walked right in and were seated right away (there were only 2 of us so if you have more in your party it would be a longer wait). The service was lovely. We had the biscuits and gravy and Baja Benedict. Both were killer! Had to restrain myself from licking the plate clean.

So I have been to Highland Morning a total of 3 times now and I was hoping this time would be different. It wasn't. The location is perfect. The decor is pretty cool. The servers are friendly. The food...not so much. Each time I have dined here I've felt like the food I ordered was not really the food I ordered. The presentation is not great, but the taste and quality are the real problems. I have ordered a variety of dishes and they have all left me wishing I had tried something else, or gone to one of the many other hot spots for brunch in Louisville. The pricing is reasonable so you won't leave hungry or broke. Maybe just not satisfied.

Excellent breakfast! I'm an avid Wild Eggs fan, but my bestie and I decided to avoid the long wait on Sunday around 11:00 and try something new. We ended up at Highland Morning and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around 11:00 - prime Sunday brunch time - and were seated right away. Great! However, and this is my only complaint, this place is small and JAM-PACKED with tables. It was a maze trying to get to our table. To give you an idea, we went one direction only to discover there wasn't enough room for us to squeeze through two guests, so we turned around and went completely around the restaurant before we made it to our destination. That's fine. The real problem is that the tables are so close together you feel like you are literally sitting at the same table as the people next to you. In fact, I could tell you all about the first date that was happening next to us (it didn't seem to be going well). There's definitely no intimacy at these tables. Aside from the cramped quarters, this place is awesome! Our server was friendly, quick, and prompt. We placed our orders. We both wanted the "Wake Me Up Omelet" and we wanted to split a small order of biscuits and gravy. When we ordered this, our served suggested that, since our meal comes with a biscuit, we could just order a side of gravy for $2 to split. We did that and it worked out perfectly. It's so nice (and rare) when servers go out of their way to save you money. Our food came out surprisingly quickly. The biscuits and gravy were amazing. Probably the best I've had. My omelet and skillet potatoes were equally as good. The omelet had excellent flavor combinations. I ate every bite on my plate. Highland Morning is a must-try, and a great addition to my breakfast repertoire. I'll be back and can't wait to try more dishes from the menu.

Great food and fast service considering how busy it is. Definitely worth another visit when we are in town. My only negative is how cramped it is. Food makes up for it. Hot and fresh with lots of homemade touches.

If you haven't had the biscuits and gravy from Highland Morning yet, then you're seriously missing out!! Everyone of my friends that I've taken there always gets at least a half order as an appetizer to their breakfast because they're that good! Buttery, flaky biscuits in a creamy-smooth sausage gravy... It's a little piece of heaven on earth! For those of us who can't eat gluten (womp womp) do not dispar! For the grits and the ever changing "grits of the day" are always a delicious treat! I've had sweet grits (fruit with cinnamon sugar) and I've had savory grits (bacon, peppers and cheese) and ALL of them were delicious! Their omelettes and breakfast scrambles are good as well! The best thing this restaurant ever did was expand into the building next door! They definitely needed the space! If you have a visitor coming from out of town, take them to Highland Morning! You all won't leave disappointed!

The BEST breakfast food on Bardstown Rd. Hands down. Expect a wait to be seated on weekends. But totally worth it. Trendy, hip, cool, comfortable and the best servers, friendly and quick. If weather permits, bring your dog (if friendly) and sit outside. Tell Michael, Jamie sent you.

My husband and I spent the weekend exploring Louisville, and came here our third day in town. Two stars for pretty good food. Nice spice on their skillet potatoes, and my fried egg sandwich was good with the pesto mayo. But I don't know if I've ever received such TERRIBLE service! We sat at our table for 20 minutes before I had to catch a waitress flying by and ask for some coffee! Once we got our coffee, our actual "waitress" slowly wandered over to us, leaned in closely, and rambled off a list a specials that didn't even sound like a string of words that would go together. Husband and I decided pretty soon after that she was under the influence of SOMETHING. And we didn't see her again!! Once we ordered with her, someone else brought us our food, and we had to ask someone else for our check! It was a mess. And the place just seemed very greasy and dirty. I'm all for a cute neighborhood diner, but this place wasn't worth it.

We brought family (visiting from out of state) here and they loved it. Started with mimosa's and had a delicious lunch. We each had something diffetent and everything was wonderful! Baja eggs benedict, crab cakes benedict, peaches and cream pancakes, sweet grits, loaded baked potato omelet....everything was wonderful. Make it a point to visit here, you won't be disappointed. Only reason i didn't give five stars: didnt take reservations... That would have made them perfect! We survived the 30 minute wait.

Good breakfast spot, food was pretty tasty. I was not amazed with my dish; I had the breakfast burrito. But my friend had the pecan waffle and OMG outstanding... my fiance had some biscuits and gravy and again so delicious! I would come back for sure and maybe try other dishes.

now this is a perfect example of a great breakfast restaurant diner. The food is perfect although typical. The place has some charm with the photography that hangs on the wall. The place could use some adjustment with the acoustics it gets rather loud inside.

I've been to Highland Morning a number of times since I live just down the street. I usually get the breakfast burrito, which is absolutely delicious but could use a little more steak inside for the price. Speaking of price, typically the burrito comes with a side of grits. The waitress recommended I get potatoes instead so I said sure, and I also got a coffee. With all the extra charges added to my meal, it came to be the price of 2 burritos at say chipotle or qdoba. Anyways, that aside, the food was delicious and I love the local feel.

Sunday brunch after the day after derby was understandably busy. We were told that the wait was only about 35 minutes so we put our name on the list and sat down for a coffee next door (they do call names over there). After about 45 minutes went by, my sister decided to go check on our table. She was then told, along with another group, by the hostess that she had already come looking for both parties. Oh really? We were seated immediately following that though and our orders were taken fairly quickly. I don't remember what my sister and her boyfriend ordered but I went with the 'shroom scramble with added bacon and fruit instead of grits. The eggs were perfectly cooked, but it tasted like the scramble was seasoned before the bacon was added so it was incredibly salty. On the other hand, the fruit was fresh. The service is friendly, but the space is kind of loud and cramped. My sister noted that they've really enjoyed brunch here in the past, but this time, it kind of missed the mark for all of us. In general, it's a cute, little local spot but is probably more enjoyable when it's not so chaotic.

We arrived at 930 on a Sunday morning (today) Seemingly just in time. They filled up quickly after we arrived but our server was attentive and the food was quick. I got the Baja Benedict which was such a good idea executed perfectly- I'm strict about my poached eggs and medium came out medium!!! My daughter got the kids breakfast and it was perfect. I was impressed since we just picked this name out of our metaphorical yelp hat!

My Love, Z, and I A D O R E brunch. Saturday mornings are our brunch day of choice - not unlike the rest of The Highlands. I love the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood on a sunny Saturday, and much of this culminates near Highland Morning. The wait is usually 15-30 minutes, but since they text when the table is ready, we're always able to walk around or enjoy a coffee at Day's Espresso next door (wrote a review on this, too). The food never disappoints. Z gets the Biscuits and Gravy and always loves it. I order The Classic with scrambled eggs, bacon, and biscuits (to use with Z's gravy :). I love, love, love the OJ, and Z always gets (another) coffee. Breakfast food is a favorite of ours, and Highland Morning always exceeds expectations. However, as amazing as Highland Morning's brunch is, it's ambiance is just OK. Like I said, I love the hustle and bustle of a busy brunch place, but during brunch rush-hour Highland Morning becomes a loud, jam-packed maze. We go for the food, but we've never received a great table, always right near the swinging, breezy front door. I love the food and the way Highland Morning uses the texting service, but I don't like the way they manage the physical space of the restaurant when it gets so, so busy.

Blame it on the "bacon hypnosis" on the sidewalk sign in front of Highland Morning, my boyfriend and I went to brunch there on Sunday. And overall we found the meal quite delightful. Both of us ended up ordering the Baja Benedict, which is two eggs cooked to order atop southwestern corncakes, spanish chorizo, avocado, chipotle hollandaise sauce, cilantro-lime crema, pico de gallo and green onion. And despite the lengthy ingredient list, this dish wasn't overwhelming or filling to the point where it felt like you were walking down Bardstown Road with a brick in your stomach. This seems to be a favorite among Yelp reviewers and rightly so. I did expect it to be more flavorful, though, given its nod to southwestern cuisine, but it still wasn't boring. And the corncakes were a great complement to runny eggs. We also got the grits of the day, which were made with asparagus, mushrooms and cheese. I liked this combination, but the grits were too runny. The service here has always been great, and their prices are reasonable. I love the fact that Highland Morning has tables on the sidewalk. Great people watching. They also put a water bowl out for passing pups -- always a considerate gesture.

First off I will say I love brunch/breakfast so I'm partial. I will try to make the review as balanced as possible. Pound for Pound, I believe Highland Morning is one of the best breakfast spots in town. I have a few supporting details as to why: The menu - It is true you can find quality food at a variety of places but rarely culinary creativity. Their famous Baja Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, and Scrambler skillets show that they get it. It makes brunch fun, ya know? Also I already mentioned in my tip. Their pancakes are to die for. Prices - For the quality of the food and the menu I think the prices are very fair. A la carte you can choose French toast for less than $4?!? As a French toast fanatic I can attest that's extremely rare! Their prices are so palatable I can usually combine a few dishes to make a glorious spread. The drinks, I will admit are pricey but that's the cost of fresh squeezed. Service+Atmosphere- I have never had anything less than accommodating and helpful service. Everyone always helps out with selections and they will even tell you about possible substations you may not have been aware of! There's wifi and a few outdoor (spaces which I particularly enjoy). I've not waited more than 10 mins for my food yet*. Food- As I have alluded to, I'm a pretty big fan of the food. I've tried a number of dishes. The pancakes are my favorite but I really like their classic eggs Benedict as well. It's nothing special just quality. For those of you who want a twist, the Baja Benedict may be for you. I think I may have appreciated it more without the corncake or some other form of starch but even that would get a 3 1/2 stars and that's my least favorite dish I've ordered! If you haven't been yet, try it. Chances are it'll be a favorite for you too. *I oft come alone and on weekdays*

I came here with a friend a few weeks ago for a Saturday bunch. The place was packed but we were able to be seated immediately. The food was good ( I had the home fries and the Denver omelet. Both good, although the home fries were a little bland) but it was our server that really made the morning. I forgot her name but it seemed everyone that worked there was extremely polite and happy to be there. I will definitely be back!

We were on a tight schedule, already struggling to make today happen and we walked in with a very hungry and rambunctious kid. Before we even sat down the servers descended on the table with super hero like magic, mama and dad rescuing magic. That translates to a fruit bowl and a coloring book. So, yes, Highland Morning won us over before the first sip of coffee or bite of food. Of course, the food was wonderful, the environment comfortable, and the pace was quick for our packed schedule. Still, the service was the the prize winner here. Friendly and prompt, they anticipated our needs and provided a stress relief that could, no did, move my wife to some tears of joy. Thanks for taking care of our little family Highland Morning!

Been there three times. It is my first choice for an excellent breakfast in Louisville. I don't understand the poor reviews about the service. You must consider you are eating in the "hippie" part of town so if you want snappy service go elsewhere. Everyone should try this place once for breakfast.

There are no wrong options on this menu, they are all phenomenal. I visited for the first time last time we were in Louisville, we will be back next time we visit. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. The hashbrown/potatoes which I normally don't like anywhere, I liked here as well. The wait staff was superior. The only complaint is that the restaurant is a bit small, but I wouldn't want them to change it or go to a larger location, restaurants tend to lose a lot in terms of quality when they begin to expand and focus solely on profits. Definitely recommend and will be going back.

We had breakfast there this week and it was great! The service was really wonderful - our waiter was friendly, thoughtful, and helpful with my allergy specific needs. We were surprised at how fast our food came, and the portions were appropriate for the price as well. Great coffee. We'll be back!

I had heard good things, so when a friend came to town to visit I suggested we start off by getting breakfast/brunch here. I had heard good things...but I can't figure out why. The food is decent and pretty well priced. I had the egg sandwich on an english muffin with grits as my side. It hit the spot. But the dining room is FREEZING (at least in the middle of winter). And service went at a snails pace. Well....once we actually were able to order our food, it came out quickly and correct. But the time it took just to get drinks or to place our order was kind of ridiculous. It was our waitress' birthday (so noted by the tiara and sash she was wearing) so maybe she just wasn't in the mood to serve other people on her special day. But when the topic of conversation of the patrons (my friend and I) spontaneously shifts to how slow the service is, during the course of our visit, you know it's bad. Like I said, the food is decent and the price of the things we got didn't break the bank. But given the option, there are other places I would prefer to go for breakfast or brunch in the future.

Edible at best. Extremely underwhelming, the coffee tasted like hot water. The service was good though. We won't be going back.

My review is really a 3.5 but since our waitress, Shannon, was so great I am rounding up! My Baja eggs Benedict was crazy delicious! The corn cakes instead of English muffins added a spectacular flair! The rest of my table however was not as impressed. The egg sandwich looked really sad. It was an English muffin with a slice of cheese and an over easy egg. The basil mayo was lack luster and part of a soggy bottom muffin. My advice, stick with the Highland specials and you can't go wrong.

This place is always packed, which is awesome. But my friend and I were so smooshed in our little corner that it was hard to enjoy our meal. Let's just say- we definitely would have died in a fire. The server couldn't even get to us. My poor friend was waiting for the server to come back to ask her for cream, and didn't get a chance to drink her (cold) coffee until she was done eating! My meal was good, it is just a little claustrophobic in there for me. Kudos to the folks waiting tables and bussing in there just would go crazy.

The food at Highland Morning is delicious and the servings are massive but the atmosphere is uncomfortable and they are clearly understaffed. This small restaurant in the Highlands takes up two storefronts and has a few tables out front. Inside the tables are absolutely packed into the space making the two dining rooms feel claustrophobic. The industrial decor (aka cement floor and walls) causes every sound to multiply and echo leading to a deafening roar. I found myself shouting at the waitress, at my boyfriend, etc to try to be heard over the extraordinary loud dining room. There is also no area to wait for a table other than out on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. We visited on a warm sunny day so we didn't mind standing outside, however in the middle of the winter this would be a serious reason to reconsider visiting. Despite the strange setup and loud dining room, our food was absolutely delicious at a very reasonably price. I tried the cinnamon swirl pancakes and turkey bacon while my boyfriend had the Belgian waffles and half order of biscuits and gravy. All of the serving sizes were huge. The pancakes were at least 3/4" thick and as big as the plate. They were sweet but not overly so. The turkey bacon was a bit limp but had a pleasant flavor. My boyfriend really enjoyed his biscuits and gravy and the waffles. Our waitress was very friendly and pleasant but seemed to be running ragged. She forgot to bring a couple of items but this seemed to clearly be because she was handling far too many tables that were turning over very quickly. Overall the food was great but there are a number of other breakfast spots in Louisville that I would visit before Highland Morning because the place is just so loud and uncomfortable.

Very decent prepared food, sub par service. Although it's typically pricey, I always try to get a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. If it weren't so close, my first option would be wild eggs. Worth the try for you first timers.

Had breakfast there this morning. Other that it being weird that they don't open until 8:00AM I was very pleased with the service and eats. Parking was a little tough like anywhere in the Highlands. Coffee Cups were big and the coffee was fresh. I had Eggs Benedict (Classic) Which I enjoyed very much... Could have done w/o the skillet potatoes they were fried in something that had an odd after taste. My girlfriends enjoyed Strawberry Pancakes & Stuffed French Toast... The French Toast could have been a little sweeter. Over all - would eat there again if I had a coupon or needed a quick (better than diner) breakfast in the Highlands Area of Louisville.

Had brunch there last Sunday. I ordered the French quarter french toast soo good!! has bananas, raisins, caramel and whip cream. Definitely a must have if you like sweet stuff and love pancakes/waffles/french toast for breakfast. Also got a side of skillet potatoes..wasn't as impressed with those kind of salty. Will be back to try more though. If you go on the weekend get there early! We went at ten and still had to wait about twenty minutes.

My boyfriend loves meat so the steak and eggs is his favorite breakfast. He gives them 5 stars! I always eat the veggie omelet (trying to stay trim lol) and it ever disappoints. Bring your appetite! We always leave full and happy.

I'm pissed. My first time here was pretty rad, and the food was solid. The second and LAST time was last week. The food sucked. Veggies weren't fresh, corn cakes were flavorless. I feel like I was a fuckin blimp because I added so much salt and hot sauce to enjoy it. The waitress was really odd and tripping me out too. I donno... I don't normally rant like this, but it was a fail of a visit this last time. Very doubtful on returning.

A little disappointed. We had the breakfast burrito and the steak and eggs. The steak was ordinary... And the fruits with it wasn't much fresh. My burrito was pretty plain. The best thing was the potatoes. Better meal next time.

I was excited to try Highland Morning because I had heard great things about their biscuits and gravy. They were fantastic.. Best I've had! However, they came out cold. I looked past that. The good morning burrito was excellent. Potatoes were too salty for my liking so I didn't eat them. I'd give them a four to four and a half based just on food, BUT the service was very, very slow. Took them twenty minutes to bring the bill after we finished eating, and five minutes to bring syrup for the waffles. Pretty small restaurant and a tad bit chaotic. Although the service was less than mediocre I'd give it another go.

I always enjoy my food here. Their biscuits and gravy is quite delish as is their pecan waffles. There is a bit of a wait sometimes which can be awkward because there is no waiting area, but generally they try to get to everyone quickly. The expanded side next door is great and was much needed. A nice brunch spot that I can walk to and that will satisfy my breakfast cravings!

Come hungry! This is a very popular Louisville breakfast spot with a lot to like. Their menu serves a variety of tastes, from the more-familiar breakfast burrito to fancier tastes like flavored pancakes. When we visited, my husband had eggs benedict, which he thought were good, but not exceptional. I found my pancakes (lemon-zest pancakes with blueberry compote and custard) to be fantasic. The custard (more like lightly-flavored yogurt than ice cream, in case you're wondering) made the entire meal moist and flavorful in all the perfect ways. My meal was also ENORMOUS-- it came with two lemon pancakes stacked on top of each other that were literally the size of the entire plate. The whole endeavor was excellent. I would suggest that the restaurant loses points for ambiance. There's nothing inherently terrible about it--it's a standard bustling cafe feel with a few nice patio tables outside and fairly standard tables inside. However, even when the restaurant isn't fully packed (which it often is), traffic flow is not good. There are lots of tables packed into a small space, with no dividers to separate the tables and packed-in people everywhere. Hard surfaces everywhere mean that typical conversation sounds bounce and amplify everywhere. I also didn't notice any music or anything to add any intentional auditory ambience. The theme of not-enough-space-for-its-popularity continues with the spaces near the back in the second room and near the restroom in the main room. There are just boxes everywhere with extra supplies--extra dishes or napkins or mustard or whatever nonperishables they need to store. The stacked-up cardboard boxes add to the feeling of chaos--much like a growing family trying to make it in a one-bedroom apartment. So for this cafe, I'd suggest 4-5 stars for food, but around 3 for ambience, giving it a total score of 3.5.

I feel like by giving this restaurant 4 stars I am somehow an anomaly, but I like this place. The space isn't terribly large so if you go during a peak time (say noon on Sunday) you should expect a wait. Luckily there is a wonderful coffee shop next door to sip coffee and converse with whomever you're planning to have breakfast with. I did this Sunday and the host walked over and called out name out in Days while we were waiting for the table. Service was good, the meal was delicious. I was satisfied with the overall experience. The one beef I guess anyone could make is that seating is a little tight, but that's about all I can think of as far as a negative.

Wow...what a nasty experience. I seem to have inconsistent experiences here, sometimes okay, sometimes just gross. This will be the last time I take the gamble. Glasses seemed dingy and the tablecloth had food stains all over it. Just removing the tablecloths would be better and easier to keep the place appearing clean. My boyfriend's Baja Benedict came out with a pool of water on the plate, presumably from the placement of the poached eggs on the dish? No idea. My first bite of omelette, with diced avocado, resulted in a crunchy, unripe avocado experience. Yuck. The rest of it seemed okay. Also, the "skillet potatoes" had no seasoning and were undercooked - again, crunchy! Our server was sweet and provided adequate service, but was just a little unpolished. I feel so disgusted after eating here!

We hit this place up for breakfast mid-morning Sunday. Seating took about fifteen minutes (during which we went to Day's Coffee next door because coffee) for a three-person group. Our server, Johnny, was enthusiastic and recommended specials, more coffee, etc. I had the special vegetable strata: light and fluffy, English-muffin base with sauteed vegetables. My tablemates had omelets, which were light and well-seasoned. Good biscuits and even the grits were palatable - they tasted to me like nicely-flavored sand, which is about the best I can say about grits as a Northerner. Coffee was dark roast and delicious. Did not get any hipster or exclusivity vibe (aside from the young hostess, who balked when we refused to seat three at a small-for-two top corner table) and felt right at home among the artwork and atmosphere. This is a place I would seek out on the next trip to Louisville, and would ask for our server again by name.

It always baffles me when a restaurant pops up doing the exact same things as another, only at a lesser level of quality. This place is an exact replica of another restaurant called Wild Eggs. The only difference is the food at this place pales in comparison to its predecessor. I've given this place three tries to make amends with it's poor excuse for the breakfast they serve, and now I'm assured that I will never go back. Why? Well, it's never the service... it's simply that there is little care going into the food. At Wild Eggs, Kalamity Katies is a rendition of eggs Benedict with a southwestern flare, with sweet corn cakes topped with chorizo, poached eggs, chives, hollandaise sauce and delicious pico de gallo and avocado. At Highland Morning, this dish is always served badly. My corn cakes were still batter in the middle! The pico was made the night before and put in the freezer, and it tastes like it! Freezing cold. The eggs were poached so that the yolks cooked through. The potatoes were soggy and the chorizo was terrible! It tasted like what you would scape off a burnt skillet after cooking bacon. The dish was bad, and it can be avoided by simply caring about every ingredient you put into a dish. Yet it was thrown together hastily and without thought. The positive side is the service, which is always cordial and attentive. I've always liked the quaint european style cafe vibe this place has. I would use the word lackluster to describe the entrees and the word unmemorable to describe the experience here. The food is always subpar and will warrant no excitement to return. Excitement is what you need to strive for to bring people back. I'll continue to give my business to Wild Eggs over this place. I'm even confident that I can find better prepared meals at Waffle House, unfortunately. My hope would be that this place starts to put higher quality ingredients into its dishes, with an extra helping of "care and craft" in the ways they prepare their food. They're located in an incredible area of town where people support great food. Maybe they'll realize that and change their methods. Until then... I can't give this place a good review

The Highlands in Louisville is an overall upscale part of the city, where some of the "better" upscale restaurants and shops are located, and the people are rather provincial. Kinda like Hyde Park (Cincinnati) Broad Ripple (Indianapolis) and Short North (Columbus). And I'm okay with that. Just a heads up...when you read a review about a local restaurant and someone complains about the food not being "seasoned properly", or "something was missing", or "it was bland food", what they REALLY mean is IT DIDN'T SATISFY MY ADDICTION TO SALT. Why? Because Americans love salt, so let's not get it twisted up in here. But I digress. DMuse and I shared a Veggie Strata (deep dish quiche, mostly, but loaded with other herbs and spices), a huge Key Lime Pancake (DELICIOUS, but don't forget your insulin shot afterward), turkey sausage and bacon. Their french roast coffee was actually very good, as well as the mixed greens (w/mustard vinaigrette) that accompanied the Strata. DMuse had never had a Strata and she thoroughly enjoyed it. The best Strata I've had, so far, was at "Taste" in Broad Ripple (Indy), but this one was good too. Highland Morning was a cozy little storefront spot with very good service, great food, attractive servers (yeah I wrote it) and attractive people (yeah I wrote that too) in the place. Go there for brunch, if you're ever in the Louisville area.

Ordered eggs Benedict. The worst hollandaise I have ever tried. It was like a very thin oily vinegar tasting liquid... I don't think I can even justify calling it a sauce. Never coming here again.

I was surprised to read the negative reviews of this place. Not that I'm downplaying anyone else's experience, but I really enjoyed my breakfast at Highland Morning. Disclaimer: My visit to HM was on a Friday morning, and the place was virtually empty. My one day trip to Louisville left me little time for fun. I figured I would make a stop in my favorite L'ville neihborhood, grab some breakfast and walk around the area before my early afternoon appointment. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this quaint, little eatery. My experience was nothing but positive. The first thing I noticed about the decor were the cool pictures featuring famous people who got their start in the Ville. The decor was minimalist, but quite pleasing. I had no problems with the service like so many other Yelper's seem to have had. My food arrived in a timely manner and my coffee cup was always full. I decided to splurge and order the Steak N' Eggs. It was a pretty good steak for $12. The Eggs were fluffy and the taters were crisp. All and all, it was a pretty good breakfast. Here's the bottom line: Timing is everything. Maybe, I visited Highland morning at the right time. The service was good and the food was delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend this place to my friends. Yes folks! It was that good.

I have a feeling that Highland Morning excels more at sweet dishes than savory ones, because the breakfast burrito was below par. It was no better than what I could order at Qdoba, but costs a few dollars more. However, the creamsicle pancakes (which I regretfully didn't order) was delicious. This means much, coming from a person who usually prefer savory over sweet. There's orange zest grated into the batter of the pancakes. The stack, topped with delicious whipped cream, was fancy enough to be a birthday cake, and my coworker ordered it to be just that. The Dutch apple waffle (I think) was good too. I didn't get to taste, but it looked delicious. I ordered steak for someone once and it smelled great. So, despite my unsatisfactory experience with my order, I will give this place another try, especially when a few foodie friends gave it such positive reviews.

I really wanted to like this place. Great location within walking distance of my home, and a great menu that looks similar to Wild Eggs, which is consistently outstanding. I'm not sure if the food they served me was very good or not really, because it was cold. The plate was freezing cold, so the eggs, potatoes and grits were cold by the time they handed it to me. I asked if it could be heated up and they took my plate and returned it to me in about a minute. But while it was obvious they had stuck it in a microwave the plate was still cold. Food was quickly cold too. Bleh. 2 1/2 stars. I may come back in the summer.

The restaurant has a solid breakfast lineup with a variety in both savory and sweet foods. The biscuits and gravy was probably the best I've had in the city of Louisville. The only knock is it has the ambiance of a diner or faster food kind of breakfast but it's more of a sit down, slow breakfast.

  • Thom L.

I've read the bad reviews, but we had good service, the place was clean, and the food was good. I got the biscuits & gravy (awesome) then the waffles (which were a bit small, more like waffle-etes) which were very good along with the coffee. My friends got the stuffed french toast which was great and the key lime pancakes. The key lime was not my cup of tea on pancakes, the bottom plain pancake not covered with key lime stuff was really good. I went on a weekday so can't speak to the brunch wait, but we were seated promptly.

We've been here 5 or 6 times and have never left disappointed. The food is good and priced right, and the staff and building reflect the eccentric vibe of The Highlands. Sit outside and people watch!!

The food is unbelievably good but the place is always crowded and the wait staff does their very best to keep up with everything. I wish there was a way they could expand to a larger space. We've eaten there four times and each time had spectacular food. Never been disappointed on the food end and the service is better than most places being that crowded. The wait isn't too bad if you go really early but by 9:30am on the weekends, it's hopping. How they produce so much excellent food in a tiny place is beyond us!

My 1 year old and I popped in on a Wednesday morning. Busy, but not too busy. Service was great, the staff was very courteous to my daughter. The food was quick and very tasty. The all star ninja breakfast was one of the best kids menu items I've seen and only 5 bucks. I got the classic (poached, sausage, grits and a biscuit. Great spot to hit if you have the morning off.

Not impressed. I wanted to be impressed, but I'm not. I live one block from Highland Morning and it would be to my benefit to fall in love with it - but it's difficult to love. I have been there several times and each time I make excuses as to why my experience was lackluster - it was an off-day, they're slammed, they're under-staffed. Blah. Blah. Blah. I think I've come to the conclusion that it's not an individual experience, it's just Highland Morning that's lackluster. The service is inconsistent at best. You go in and put your name down, but the names are called off in a different order. Several times I've seen people that I know got there after me be seated before me. The last time I was there a man walked in 10 minutes after I was there, was seated immediately, and had his food before I even had a table. After I was finally seated, it took a server 15 minutes to acknowledge us. It's not a big place, people - c'mon. If the food was amazing, then that would possibly trump the service experience. It would definitely be an easier pill to swallow, for sure. But it's not - their food is screaming to be infused with flavor. It's incredibly, incredibly bland. I first came to Highland Morning to try the biscuits and gravy. I'm from the South - not only do I know biscuits and gravy but I can make my own biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was fine - but the gravy was anything but fine. It was creamy and had a nice sausage to gravy ratio - but the flavor of the gravy just wasn't there. It needed salt, pepper, and fat. They've won awards for this? Were they the only entry? I also have tried to baja burrito. It looks amazing and the presentation is beautiful. However, the filling is - you guessed it, BLAND. It's begging for salt, pepper, lime juice, garlic, jalapeno, whatever else just SOMETHING to add depth to the flavor profile. As beautiful as it looks - it's just not good. Same thing with the "grits of the day" - BLAND. I love grits and when you say that the grits of the day contain cheese, peppers, onions, and sausage - I'm sold. What I actually got was a small bowl of very thin quick grits with a little green pepper, hunks of sausage, and small amount of cheese that you couldn't taste at all. If grits are going to be a main component of your menu - at least take the time to make them good. Make ACTUAL grits, not quick grits. Thicken them up and infuse some flavor in them. Just like biscuits and gravy - I also know grits. Clearly Highland Morning and grits are strangers - they need to be properly introduced.

I would not have noticed Highland Morning unless walking down Bardstown Road. I really is small hole in the wall joint, but it is well worth the visit. We noticed them, due to an online discount deal. Highland Morning is seriously a wonderful place to eat not only breakfast but lunch. I had the bardstown roadie. We had a loaded potato omelet, and and apple pie waffle. Everything including the grilled potatoes we superb! Definitely worth a revisit, even after a short wait.

This is a tiny place that can be easily overwhelmed. They've just leased the place next door, so perhaps wait times might go down. It's seriously cramped in there. The food I've had was consistently good, and service was decent even under fire, unlike other reviews I've seen here. You'll probably need patience. They do omelets, waffles, pancakes, and lunch food, like deluxe grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't do meat, so can't vouch for it. Prices seemed a tad high, but I thought the quality was worth it. It's not a huge place, and people seem to want to impose their ideas on it. I have no complaints. Beats any Bob Evans on the planet. Coffee was good. Waitresses were friendly if overworked. I don't know about underpaid; I leave a reasonable tip.

Ive seen the bad reviews and I honestly have to say I dont get it. Ive been a few times at this point for both business and with family and have had nothing but great service and food each and every time. The place is pretty small so seating can be a challenge, and its hit or miss if you are going to get a table depending on how busy the morning is. If its busy, its busy. The food and coffee have all been spot on. From the grits of the day to the house specialty Baja Benedict (which is awesome!) Ive always been pleased. The food is served hot and well seasoned. We will keep coming back.

I have had nothing but good experiences with Highland Morning, but I have had some friends that had complaints about service similar to the other reviews. Highland Morning became my go-to brunch spot after I got tired of spending over an hour waiting at wild eggs every saturday morning. I've always had good luck with the food. The biscuits and gravy, waffles, eggs & steak, baja benedict, pancakes, grits, and breakfast burrito have always been great for me. Seating is very limited, so plan on waiting, or get there early. I often bring my dog and sit outside when the weather is nice, and I am generally seated in 30 minutes or less. I've done lunch here twice, the sandwiches and tomato soup are good, but not as good as the breakfast items in my opinion.

Such a neat little breakfast/brunch cafe nestled amongst dozens of other restaurants on hip Bardstown Road. Expect to wait on weekends unless you get their extremely early or come in late. There are only about a dozen tables inside the cramped space. The waffles were cooked absolutely perfectly and the candied Georgia pecans were a great complement to the chewiness of the waffles. The locally-roasted organic coffee was the perfect strength without being bitter.

Highland Morning Restaurant straight-up rocks. Best breakfast place in Louisville. Period. The highest compliment I can pay Highland Morning is that it reminds me of Lynn's Paradise Café when Lynn's was located on Frankfort Avenue. You know ... before Lynn's was about kitsch, money, and video cameras. Highland Morning is all about great food, big portions, and good prices. The favorites are many, but I highly recommend three tried and true winners: 1) Buttermilk/Lemon Lover's pancakes; 2) the Good Morning Breakfast burrito; and 3) the full order of biscuits and gravy. The after-breakfast menu is also delicious; but, once I went to breakfast I never went back to the after-breakfast menu again. Maybe another reason I do not partake from the after-breakfast menu is that I always leaved completely stuffed. Did I mention what a great value the place is?! I reviewed some other reviews before I wrote this, and I don't get it. I think the service is great (i.e., someone brings me a diet-Coke when I sit down, someone takes my order, a few minutes later my piping hot food is delivered, someone boxes-up my leftovers, and someone then brings me a check) and if you want "vegan" go to a "vegan" restaurant. If something I order has mushrooms and spinach in it, there also better be cheese, eggs, and steak. Complaints about tofu? Really? Jeez. Two final comments. First, now that Highland Morning has opened another room, I rarely wait for a table. And when do I have to wait for a table, I just go next door and read the paper and watch the people, until it is time for a little bit of nirvana. Second, this place is so good that even my food grumpy father and my cheap brother-in-law love the place. My highest recommendation. I will see you Saturday morning. I will be the guy with a diet-Coke, a table full of food, and a smile.

This place has amazing food. I feel truly blessed to live within a 2 min walk of here. Now trust me this place get packed with a line out the door on weekends so don't come at 2pm on a Saturday expecting to get a table right away. The last time I was here they messed up my order, but am I gonna knock stars off for that? No, shit happens and I'm not an asshole. This place is an overall 5 star experience. Some of you on here complaining about stuff like to post a review after one bad visit. F*** you, you can go vote for Jenna bush in the next election. I'll eat at highland morning and vote for Hilary.

*not vegan friendly. *I ended up getting a tofu mushroom and spinach scramble. *for 9 dollars this was a very small portion. The food was over oiled and little to no flavor. The food texture was good, but once again it was hard to get passed all the oil running throughout the dish. *The building itself was small but functional, the problem with it were all the flies. I could count at least ten easily. If my plate was full of meat I would have probably been fighting them off like everyone else in there. Now that I mention this I wonder how many flies were in the kitchen. Overall all my experience was not very good. Everyone in my group really seemed to enjoy the huge pancakes and grand portions of biscuit and gravy. *servers were very friendly. 2 out of 5. I have no reasons to go back.

Best breakfast I've had thus far in Louisville. Pancakes, French toast, eggs, potatoes, everything is good. Haven't had a bad experience yet! Keep it up highland morning!

I've found hair in my food... Twice. Am I seriously the only person this has happened to? Also the service is, well, unattentive by some and great by others. Post-Saturday night on-goings, it's so close and breakfast is so necessary, I feel like I have no choice but to return. I can't remember her name but, she has fair skin and jet black hair... Anyway, she might be the most unfriendly and impersonal server I've ever seen. Last time I was there a gentleman sitting next to me at the bar while I waited for my carry-out order, asked for some silverware and you'd think she didn't even hear him. She appeared preoccupied... flipping channels on the television! And she never acknowledged him, she made no eye contact, nor was there any other indication that she heard him. He asked 3x before she just walked away. So I reached over and grabbed some rolled silverware I saw setting nearby and handed it to him. No harm, no foul, she didn't hear him, right? Then she came back over to the bar and with a place setting for him and when he tried to thank her but decline she just walked away in the middle of his sentence to who knows where, leaving behind the silverware he didn't need anymore. So She heard a paying customer asking politely for something, after she half-assed running his food might I add, and she wanted to be sure that she finished flipping through channels on the tv before she took care of the guests. He also had a foreign accent and I can't assume anything, but if he were here visiting the city of Louisville I hope this poor display of southern hospitality,or lack thereof, didn't impact his views of our beautiful and eclectic city! Not to mention, Louisville is quickly becoming, if it's not already, an authority in original and tasty cuisine. How ab being part of the upswing jet-black-hair/fair-skinned lady? Hospitality is about making every guest feel important. Did you forget that? You know what, I've been waited on by you often enough. I feel like its a safe assumption that you did forget. Right before that incident you were sitting in 2 of seats at the bar as you channel surfed and I, another paying customer had to ask you, an employee the restaurant, if I could sit in one of the 2 seats where you were flipping channels. The place was packed and she was flipping channels at the bar! Smh. But idk your life. Idk what's going on beyond the surface, and I hope that has no bearing, but with that being said, that is precisely why we should always be kind. Most especially in the service industry. It seems like a small gesture, but it matters. That guy was sitting by himself already, you couldn't even acknowledge him? We're all people. Shame on you. And highland morning, do better. Smh. I for one, am sick of enduring terrible service in the Highlands for the sake of delicious food. Give ppl a great experience. That's what you're there for... Right?

Mehhhhhh. We ended up here because the wait somewhere else was too long and our local host suggested this place. I tasted the pancakes, the burrito and the waffles. I thought all were just mediocre generic breakfast fare. The wait was kind of long too!

Service was good food came out fast. I had the biscuits and gravy not too bad. The potatoes came out of the freezer. I really like the atmosphere and what better way to start of your day then breakfast in the highlands.

UPDATE.....from 5 stars to 2 stars. After our last 2 visits here, it is clear management doesn't care about this place. The servers basically run the place from what I can tell and the food quality has plummeted. When they first opened it was hard to get a seat, now you can get a seat with ease anytime. This is a direct reflection of the food. The best selling Benedict, was almost uneatable with the massive amount of chorizo and the eggs being over cooked. I had high hopes for them and wanted to see them succeed, but just don;t see that happening now. Either ownership changed or something but this place is headed in the wrong direction. Yes people on Bardstown will keep going, that is why Twig and Leaf is still open, but this place has so much more potential. ........back to Wild Eggs A new best breakfast/brunch place puts all the others to shame. If they would pick a better location they would have a huge hit, but as it is they may not survive year 1. I love the tower of waffles, biscuits and gray, and the omelets are very good too. I haven't had a bad meal there yet, but they need an equalizer to the everything muffin.

For once, yelp has failed me. My family came here only because it was the only place in town with less than an hour wait for brunch. The hostess told us our wait would be about 15-20 minutes and she was right on target. The restaurant itself is very cramped and plain, but I was there for the food, not the atmosphere. Our waitress was quick and pleasant-no complaints there. The food was outstanding. After reading yelp I was actually terrified to receive my food (of course I checked yelp after we had already arrived). I really don't know what was so wrong with other reviewer's meals. I was in a party of 5 and everyone was raving about this place as we were leaving.

I have served at many restaurants before and therefore I'm typically very understanding towards wait and kitchen staffs. However, my experience at this place elicited the only purposeful non-tip I have ever awarded. I have actually been to this place many times and I have ALWAYS been disappointed. You might wonder why I would go back, and indeed I do also. Probably because of the proximity of the place to my apartment and the appealing idea of brunch on a hungover Saturday. Anyhow, no experience has ever produced a bad review from me.... until now. I arrive at the restaurant with a companion for breakfast on a slow weekday morning. There are two other tables in the entire place, but they still can't seat us right away. Okay, whatever, I guess they have their reasons. After being seated we waited for about ten minutes for the server to come get our drink order, and he didn't seem busy at all. In fact I'm pretty sure that he was standing behind the bar talking with his coworkers; which I'm good with so long as I have ordered my drinks! This attitude extended into all aspects of the experience. The following summarizes: Slow to take order, order doesn't come for 45 minutes and the place isn't busy, server disappears for long periods of time, food is cold, food has a hair in it, and a long wait for the check. Sorry but this was the absolute worst dinning experience ever and will never go here again.

Disclaimer: my experience with Highland Morning is limited. Of the two times I've gone I have left feeling hugely dissatisfied. I live 5-6 blocks away from this place and its a sad day when I can drive all the way out to Wild Eggs on Dutchman's Lane, wait for 30 minutes, eat brunch and drive back to the Highlands. If alternate universes existed, the other Megan that instead drove to Highland Morning would still be waiting for her food. Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration. I really wanted this place to be awesome since its so close to my house. The service is just not good at all. The first time I went here my friend and I got our food way after other parties that had been seated much later than us. The last time I ate here I happened to have my cell phone on the table and the server picked it up and almost put it in her pocket. I'm not relaying this anecdote because I think she wanted to steal it, but she told me she was just really hung over and they were short-staffed and stressed. I know everyone and every restaurant has their off days, but it seems the staff might be regularly suffering from the same ailment that brings in the weekend brunch crowds by the droves. The food is pretty good, but nothing special enough to overlook the overall experience.

UPDATE 10/24/11: Unfortunately, three visits since my last update and Highland Morning still hasn't fixed its service issues. I still like the food but I'm dropping them to a 3-star. *** *** I've been to Highland Morning two dozen times since it opened--some of those times it was packed at peak breakfast times on a weekend or holiday--some of those times it was casual and relaxed. On one of my busier visits they dropped me (and a guest who had severe health limits in terms of being outside in the heat waiting) from the list because the hostess was using her 6-inch voice to call out the names of those waiting on a table. On the upside, we ate for free that morning. So, whatever the staffing and service issues I've experienced at H.M., they have always been dealt with decisively in my favor. That has earned my loyalty to some extent, esp. given the good food quality. Which brings me to the menu, which is lively, and strays from the beaten path quite imaginatively. For example, the Baja Benedict is a zesty variation on eggs benedict served over two corn muffins (one for each poached egg) with salsa and the requisite sauce. This little dish is addicting and I've had to discipline myself not to ALWAYS order it. H.M. has a great Grits of the Day, good pancakes, good oatmeal (I challenge them to omit the saturated fat using whole milk and butter and wish they'd offer walnuts for the oatmeal but this is quibbling). Even after I strip out all the pleasure normal mortals enjoy due to my self-imposed dietary restrictions they do right by me. All in all, this is a fantastic addition to the Bardstown Rd corridor, and unlike Sweet & Savory, they have late hours. P.S. Try and guess the names/identity/whereabouts of all the Louisville-centric sites and celebrities on the walls of H.M. It's fun (but I'm an insufferable know it all, ha!).

We've been here twice, both in at off-peak times and received some of the worst service of anywhere we've been. We've both worked in restaurants for a while, so we can be forgiving if there is a reason for it, but I can't come up with a single viable excuse for the level of inattention, awkwardness, and unfamiliarity with the menu or product. Drinks went unfilled for long stretches, food was delivered slowly and at tepid temperatures, plates were never cleared, questions were very cursorily addressed if at all, and the check took a long time to materialize, even after it was explicitly requested. Good food could make up for SOME of this, but even the food is usually little better than mediocre. Eggs are probably the one thing that a breakfast place should be able to get right, and over easy is one of the most common orders on a breakfast menu so you'd think they would have had plenty of practice. Mine arrived over pretty hard, unseasoned, on a cold plate. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy was the one real bright spot, but if the biscuits and waffles don't come from a just-add-water package of mix, I'd be surprised.
