One of my favorite places to eat in town! Try the Beef Stroganoff! It is AMAZING!

I am a huge German food nut. While in Louisville for business, my colleague recommended that I try Gasthaus. He had nothing but great things to say about the food there. I decided to give it a shot. I have to say that I was really disappointed with the quality of the food here. My first negative experience of the night was with the basket of bread that was brought to the table, complete with a spider. I realize that bugs happen in restaurants, no matter how clean. However, nothing turns me off faster than seeing bugs in a restaurant, let alone in my food. After dispatching the spider, I still decided to stick it out and give the entree a chance. I ordered my all time favorite, the Rahm Schnitzel (pork cutlet). It was extremely tough and bland. It was literally too tough to cut and barely edible. I was not impressed at all. I also had the Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad). It lacked the vinegary, mustardy flavor that I always look for. It was basically boiled bland potatoes. I know that Gasthaus is known for its dessert, but I was so turned off by all the other food, that I decided just to get the check and go. In closing, I was extremely disappointed with my experience here. The food was bland, the service mediocre and the prices extremely high for the food (around $40 with no alcohol or dessert). I guess I am just spoiled when it comes to German food. I live very close to Helen GA , which is a small alpine-themed town in North GA where you can get fantastic German food at reasonable prices from any number of restaurants or pubs. I have eaten so well at other restaurants in Louisville this week. However, if this is what passes for German cuisine in KY, I feel bad for the locals.

I'll say this, myself and a group of fellow co-workers/friends have dined here once a year, over the last 4 years, and have never been disappointed. Although tucked away in a little shopping center, it is distinguishable by a red door. The decor is all reminiscent of a small German restaurant and brings back great memories for me and my military days. The menu is sparse, but contains enough of the tastes and flavors that wash over me as a tidal wave. The young ladies that serve you are lovely and are dressed in traditional German clothing. For those of us that have no idea what German cuisine is, just think of it as good old country cooking. If you like bread, brown gravy, potatoes and good pork, chicken or beef, then you'll love German food. As an appetizer we were presented brown bread with a delightful herbed butter spread. This was wonderful. I had a Zigeuner Schnitzel, some spaetzle (butter sauteed small German noodles) and some cooked red cabbage. To top it off, I had a wonderful Hefeweizen wheat beer that went along smashingly well with the meal. Wundabar! We had a large crowd of about 10 dining and the service was very good. The only negative, that I can find is that the items on the menu are a little steep in price. My meal, was over $40.00, although we did have a large tip thrown in reference the large party and the beer. Otherwise, this place would be a 5 for sure.

This is one of my very favorite restaurants in town. After having been pregnant and craving a good German beer for nine months I decided we had to go to The Gasthaus for my birthday dinner. We took a group of twelve people with us many of whom had never been before and everyone left wanting to return! I ordered the bratwurst dinner with sauerkraut and bratkartoffeln ( fried potatoes with bacon ) and everything was excellent. These are not your everyday grocery store brats. They make them in house so they are fresh and delicious. They come with a wonderful side of Dusseldorf mustard for dipping. I have never once had leftovers at The Gasthaus. Not because the portions are small but because its too good to quit eating! I also ordered my favorite German beer, Ehrdinger. In fact I had three of these 16 ounce God sends! It is probably the best beer I have ever had and I have tried a lot of different beers! Even though I was stuffed I still had to get dessert. The Schwarzwalder Kirsch torte also known as Black Forest cake. They also make the desserts in house and they are truly to die for. Everyone in our party loved their food and even ordered desserts. I especially love the service at the Gasthaus. All of the servers are from Germany and speak German and that is important to me in any ethnic restaurant. I have never had a bad meal or bad service at the Gasthaus and the adorable decor only makes the dinning expierience better. I recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit on a weekend because they are always packed. If you are a fan of German cuisine or have never tried it before I suggest you give this tiny place a shot. You won't be sorry!

I have been to a few German restaurants in Louisville and out towards Elizabethtown and this is by far the best. I love their bread and "butter" (1/2 cream cheese 1/2 butter). I get the Chicken Ragout every time! I instantly knew I would never be able to order anything else, that nothing else would compare to what I was tasting the first time I tried it. I have tasted the Rahm Schnitzel and it is also wonderful. I love the spatzle and sauerkraut. Their pan fried potatos are also good. I highly recommend saving room for desert which is hard because I'm always so full after eating! I normally get mine to go. I have enjoyed all the ones I've tried but the Strawberry Napoleon is my favorite by far! My friend said "I can't even believe human hands made this!" I recommend ordering your desert when you sit down so they can reserve it for you. You can see their selection walking in and once the homemade deserts are gone they're gone! Also, if you want a couple different sides but don't feel like ordering an extra side go 1/2 one side and 1/2 another. Make reservations if its the weekend or near a holiday. They have a great selection of beer, wine and hot teas :)

Full of Gasthaus food, I am in a German happy place right now. Everything down to the bread and butter basket were full of flavor. I got the beef stroganoff, which came with spaetzle (German egg noodles). And I cleaned my plate. The beef was hearty and adequately spiced, and the noodles were my favorite part. My boyfriend got sauerbraten -- also beef but it was more tender than the stroganoff beef and had been steeped in spices longer. The red cabbage that my boyfriend also got was yummy and had a kick to it. I think next time I want to get the sauerbraten with spaetzle. And for dessert we split a strawberry Napoleon, which was more than enough for two people. The customer service was stellar, and I love the atmosphere. It is a little pricey -- the stroganoff was $25 -- but worth it.

Had a great introduction dinner to German with a fellow foodie. The Jager Schnitzel was presented with fresh mushrooms, plenty of hunters gravy and was plentiful. The meat was well pounded and breading was cooked to a golden perfection. Both of us had spatzel aplenty! I had the Rouladen which was a bit small, yet well prepared and filling. I like a bit more of the inner pickling than most. The beef was tender and very flavorful. The cheese spread and fresh rye were a very nice accompaniment. I would have liked to have had a salad and maybe some pickled cabbage or sauerkraut on the side included. I think for the prices one or both could have been added or offered. Instead the rest is a la cart. Overall this is as good as some of the small places in Germany. Nothing special...yet that is the German way. As for desert however the Apple stuesel is divine. Little raisins added give a pleasent tartness and the dough was flakey and wonderful.

Needed to grab some last-minute dinner whilst out of town, in L-ville. Love German food, and don't have such a restaurant back home, so I decided to go with this. Place was packed full, and I was 1, and they were kind enough to let me sit at the small bar they had. I had the Beef Stroganoff, which was money! The beef was so tender and tasty, and the accompanied Spätzle was done amazingly. I added a German potato salad which also did not disappoint. Their German Beer selection is plentiful, and I washed it all down with a Hoffbrau. Unfortunately had no room for dessert, but the delicacies they were preparing looked very good! Would 100% recommend, as this is in the tip tier of German Restaurants I have eaten at. Will definitely return if by some chance I visit or pass by Louisville again!

Can't stop going back to this place. I walk out stuffed and very satisfied as does the whole fam. It's a little hard to get into and usually requires a reservation but it's definitely worth it. I don't think that there is a place in town that has German this good. I have had many different things here and you can't go wrong with the special. Don't miss the red cabbage and the German potato salad. As far as the entrees, you can't go wrong. Whatever type of meat that you like, just go with that. Pork, chicken, beef, veal. You can't go wrong. The desserts are very nice but make sure that you reserve one at the beginning of your meal or it may not be there at the end. It's a tad pricey but it's not somewhere that you go once a week. It's pretty special...enjoy!!

What an unbelievable experience. Wait staff was exceptional. The atmosphere was so fun. The food was unspeakable. And the desert was to die for. We have lived in Louisville for 4 years and this was our first time at Gasthaus. Needless to say, they made advocates out of us and we will be back! Recommendations: Jäger schnitzel spaetzle Stroganoff ***Strawberry Napoleon is a must!!

Many thanks for a wonderful evening celebrating my sweeties 50th Bday with lots of friends and family! Service was awesome, everyone was well taken care of! NO ONE WENT HOME HUNGRY!!! A beautiful evening of celebration and gastronomical delight! Thank you to this wonderful family owned fine dining establishment! You are the best!!!!

Dining was a pleasure. Do ask for the potato pancakes early; they are only available by special request. We ordered potato soup and potato pancakes for starters, Jäger with potatoes and Sauerbraten with Spaetzle, for our main courses, and Strawberry Napoleon for dessert.

My girlfriend and I had the most amazing German food here. So far, we vote it the best and most authentic German food in the North Central Kentucky area (Erika's is second place). I had the stroganoff and she had the rouladen. We did not have a reservation but were first in line at 6pm and got a table right away. Our tab was $94 for the two main dishes, two extra sides, two sodas, and three deserts. Pricey but worth it given the high quality of the food and service. Overall an A+ experience (food, service, ambiance, etc). I highly recommend trying this place out.
(5)Emily Y.
The apple strudel with ice cream was soooooo good! ...as was the warm potato salad. Our entree meats were well cooked--veal and beef. Service was friendly, and the restaurant was cozy. Our only hang up though is that the food is a tad over-priced for the quantity served and the lack of fanciness. In general, the selections could stand to be $4-5 cheaper. All-in-all though, I'm sure we will be back...especially as the weather gets colder.

We have eaten German food at wonderful restaurants in Germany several times and the Gasthaus is equal to or better than anything we have had in Germany. We make reservations here for all of our special occasions. We always have amazing service and have gotten to know several of the people who work here. It is a family owned business and is extremely well run by an actual German family (the Griepels). They are only open Tues-Sat (6-9:30) so it is a good idea to call ahead for a reservation, especially if you want to go on a holiday or saturday night. We have tried a dozen of their desserts and all were delicious except for the black forest cake which was disappointing in comparison to their other homemade desserts. The prices are equivalent to what you would pay in Germany for the same food ($15+ for an entree). The portions are generously just right. I can highly recommend the Jaeger Schnitzel and any of their nightly specials. Enjoy!

I cannot recommend the Gasthaus highly enough. Our first visit there was truly what a restaurant experience should be. The family running the Gasthaus have hospitality down to an art form. We arrived at 6pm on a Friday evening without reservations. To save yourself some time and trouble, be sure to make your reservations ahead of time before you go. The restaurant is only open from 6:00 - 9:30 pm Tuesday - Saturday, and the weekend slots fill up fast. We knew we'd hit on a winner when we saw the number of people with reservations waiting outside before the restaurant opened! The lady of the house, Mrs. Annemarie Greipel, could not have been more kind to two walk-in customers, and we were seated as soon as possible after she and her excellent family/staff had taken care of the guests with reservations. Our server was one of the Greipel daughters, whose banter, demeanor and attention made the entire visit a delight. Now, for the food. Oh my goodness, the food! I had the homemade gulasch with spatzel, which was tender, rich and spicy with paprika, while the spatzel was at once fluffy and substantial. It was perfect for soaking up the delicious gravy with the gulasch. My husband had the Jager Schnitzel with kartoffel salat, the famous sweet/tangy warm potato salad. A better version of this potato salad you will not find. I wanted to order a quart of it to go, then not share a bit of it. The schnitzel was cooked to perfection, fully done, but still incredibly moist and tender, and the savory onion gravy was fantastic. The beer menu is extensive and very fresh. No stale-smelling biergarten issues here! The Bitburger Pils was a favorite brew at our table. And now for another word of warning. The food is so fabulous, you may think that you won't want dessert. Trust me, you WILL, especially after you see them. They are Mrs. Greipel's house-made delicacies that change daily, and good any day that has a "y" in it. The strawberry napoleons go fast, so if you want the decadent tower of puff pastry, pastry cream, ripe strawberries and almonds (and really, who wouldn't?), order it with your dinner or you might be out of luck! The blueberry cheesecake available during our visit was everything I remember my aunt's homemade cheesecakes to be - light as a feather on the tongue, not too sweet, and incredibly rich. All in all, if you want a glorious evening out with fabulous food and a restaurant staff that makes you feel completely at home and welcome, then make your next restaurant visit a trip to the Gasthaus. I know I can't wait to go back again.

My wife and I lived in Northern Germany for a year and were fortunate enough to stay with many German families around the country for long weekends. So you could say we know German food...real home cooked German food. The Gasthaus is like a journey back to those days. The food is totally authentic and the service is impeccable. There is a very eclectic selection of German beers. All in all it is a real treat when we dine at the Gashaus. Go early, they always have a crowd.
(5)John A.
In short, the food was delicious and the service was excellent! ! ! ! My wife and I wanted something different from the run-of-the-mill chain type restaurants and found this online. We were extremely pleased with the small family feel the restaurant had and the food was better than we had hoped. Dinners run in the $20+ dollar range, but well worth it. Owner was present and nice to speak with. Wait staff was very efficient and attentive. We would definitely return when we come back to Louisville.

This was an excellent German meal! Now I lived for a while in the Czech Republic and traveled several times to eastern Germany, and my wife is from a very German community in Southern Indiana and traveled herself to southern Germany so we knew what we were looking for and had high expectations. Gasthaus did not disappoint. I ordered Gulasch with spaetzl and wife ordered Jagerschnitzl with potato dumplings and we split betwixt us. Everything was authentic and very very tasty. The gulasch was tender and flavorful, and the schnitzel was perfect (the breading still stayed crisp, holding up to the sauce). The desserts were wonderful too. I had a chocolate torte with berry sauce and wifey had the apple strudel. Both were fantastic. Sweet without being cloyingly so like a good German dessert should be. They had a nice selection of German beers, none on tap, but I'll forgive them. Décor was German kitsch, but it added to the ambiance rather than detracted. Only minor complaint was that we had reservations at 8 and didn't sit until 8:30, but meal was so fantastic I didn't mind. Wunderbahr!

This is the real deal here folks! We came here for a Yelp International Supper Club event, and we loved it!!! We had a huge party of people, but you wouldn't have known it -- service was FANTASTIC! We LOVE German food, and this place is an unexpected gem (in a strip mall of all places!) for an authentic, delicious meal, plus amazing desserts! Absolutely recommend this restaurant for a date night or a fun night out with friends!

I absolutely adore the Gasthaus! It's quirky charm and themed decor reeled me in right away. I also loved how all the waiters dressed in German wear. Too cute! I started off with an Oktoberfest beer (ended up ordering two because they were so good) and some of their scrumptious bread and dill butter. I had to make myself stop at three pieces of the bread because I knew a yummy dinner was coming. I chose the Rouladen and spätzle for an entrée. My nana is German and recommended it. Good job nana! Good. Job. Rouladen starts off with a dill pickle. It's then wrapped with onion, bacon and beef. They then smother it with a brown beef gravy. A pickle you say? Yes! I honestly didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was. I only ate half of my meal because I also wanted to try one of their homemade desserts. Glad I did! I chose the flourless chocolate soufflé and vanilla ice cream for dessert. It's not what I would call a German dish, but I didn't care. The chocolate was calling me. It was absolutely d-lish! Couldn't ask for a better dessert really. Emily H. Also treated all the Yelpers to a fun treat of Underberg. It's a small bottle of bitters and herbs made to aid in digestion. Whoo! That's my best description. HAHAHA! It was a lot like Jäger with some spicy herbs infused in it. You could tell it had a kick after a small sip. At 44% alcohol I thought I could breathe fire. Lol! Thank you Emily for such a cool treat. I love trying new things so this was right up my alley! I can't wait to take my nana here for her 89th birthday!!! She will be in heaven. I'll make sure the next time I visit they have their accordion player performing. Anything to kick up the ambiance! Sprechen Sie Deutsch?
(5)Cheryl M.
Soooo I guess I'm not a German food fan at all!!! But for the tomato & mozzarella salad, small side of potatoes & a slice of cake I paid $30... The place did have great character though, just not my cup of tea:(
(2)Marty W.
Haven't eaten German food since after my assignment in 1992 and this food was great. Can't wait to return to try more things. I had the chicken cordon bleu, spatzel and strawberry napoleon for desert. Yummy!!
(5)Heather C.
Tried German food tonight for the very first time. It was, without question, unequivocally - one of the top 5 meals I have ever had in all of my 42 years. Fork tender & flavorful beef goulash outshines what was once my personal gold standard - Grandma's Sunday pot roast. I could have easily cleaned my plate but I was pacing myself, holding out for dessert. They were out of several items but the cherry strudel was outstanding. The sad part for me is that I am relocating and this was my final meal in Louisville. Should I return to the 'Ville there is no question where I will go for dinner. Do yourself (maybe not your waistband) a favor & go to Gausthaus!
(5)Amanda W.
Every time I go to a German restaurant, I order Jäger Schnitzel mit Spätzle. I did not like the Brotchen but Spätzle was on point. I love their Napoleon, got to have the yummy dessert.
(5)Vanessa S.
What an amazing experience at the German Gasthaus last Saturday. I'm originally from Germany and just moved to the states this year. Every now and then I crave some homemade German food and I've found my favorite place to get it! The staff is from Germany and knows what they're talking about. The restaurant is adorably cute decorated. The service is great and the food is amazing. Just like you would expect it from Germany. I've brought some American friends here and they fell in love with the German cuisine as well. You should definitely make reservations ahead and save some room for dessert. The fallen chocolate soufflé and lemon roll are to die for.
(5)Tammy F.
Very good German food. It is a small place so you hAve to have a reservation. Service could be a little faster but we were there on a Friday night
(4)Bob B.
Great German food. Kristina was our waitress and did a great job. She was very friendly and did a fantastic job taking care of us. The food was authentic and the portions were large. I would recommend this to my friends.

Had the beef stoganoff and it was tender and very delicious. Service was very good and the dining area was spotless

Fun little German restaurant. I know, fun and German don't always go well together but the Bavarian's like their beer and their sausages and hey, that's fun right? Hubby and I went here the other night for a "I need some time together dinner". It was a great choice. We sat in the dining room in one of their little "houses" which was fun (there's that word again!) and relaxing. We were able to talk and eat and just relax. I had a beer - the heffe-weissen (sp??) which was the first beer on the beer menu. It was perfect and rich. Just like I like my men and my beer. lol ;) ! I ordered the sauerbraten (yum!) and hubby got the roulade (also yum!). We both got spaetzle and hubs got an extra side of potato dumplings. He really liked them. The waitress was from Germany and of course we asked her about a thousand questions which she happily answered while still being able to attend to all of her customers. She helpfully let me know that I could split my side dish and chose two sides which of course I did. I always have trouble deciding what I want so I loved being able to have both. I got the potatoes with the onion and bacon - they were fantastic and I'm so happy I got them!! They do carry one alcohol free beer which is fantastic since hubby doesn't drink. It is always nice when a restaurant carries an alcohol free beer! The restaurant had only 3 of the strawberry Napoleon deserts left but they were all claimed. I told hubby we would be coming back for that beer and a Napoleon in the next few weeks. I know they have other deserts but that's the one I want so I will go back. The owner is great - or so hubby tells me since he went without me in August while I was out of town. Next time we will sit at the bar and have our desert and a conversation.

Hubby and I returned to Gasthaus for our anniversary. It is every bit as good as it was the last time we were here! The rooster on the roof; the wall of teddy bears and the little houses complete with white lace curtains still made us giggle as we were led to the chairs. Make sure you request a table inside one of the houses when you make the reservation, it is so cute in there! We skipped appetizer and went straight to the food. The portions are still mightily hearty just like last time. I got the Schnitzel a la Holstein: pan fried veal Schnitzel topped with 2 fried eggs, garnished with anchovies and capers, with bacon fried potatoes on the side. Good thing I did not eat too much of that homemade bread and yummy butter before hand...that was one big, yummy plate of food! After polishing off the schnitzel and eggs, I had to stop myself from finishing those crispy potatoes. Hubby got one of their less embellished schnitzels and was very happy with it, too. Ahhhh, now time for those desserts! If you've seen my reviews, desserts rarely make it on to my plates or reviews cuz I don't care for sweets. But Gasthaus is different, I actually make room for my dessert here. I LOVE their Black Forest cake: not too sweet, extra whipped cream and kirsch, very European. YUM! Hubby got their cherry strudel again and loved it again. Gasthaus, if your prices were just a bit lower, I would visit you more often than special occasion only, but you are worth every penny!!
(4)Zachary H.
Best German food I've ever had and I don't think it's particularly close. I'd recommend the weiner schnitzel. A bit more pricey than some places but has a very nice ambiance. They seem to always be closed or too busy when I think about going! They should be more mindful of my schedule and what I want!
(5)Michele B.
This is one of those places you just have to go to about once a year, just because. Sometimes food is really good and hits the spot, other times just misses the mark. This place really shouldn't be the rage it is, but it is, so they must be doing something continually right. Had the sauerbrauten last time and it really wasn't so good. Just a strange eclectic little place. Yes, I will go back again, as I do every so often, just because. Went one time several years ago and had the absolutely best german meal ever- keep hoping to find that again. Didn't help that the waitress fell in love with my husbands voice last time and made it quite clear. she was enthralled with him. (He has a broadcasting degree and sounds like a "radio guy".) Flattering, but she could have throttled it back a bit. Hubby was pretty clueless(and confused) and thought it was funny she was so flustered. That was a weird trip to say the least. Havent been back and probably won't be for quite a while since none of us was overly impressed with our meal.
(2)Miss C.
I had a very mediocre experience during my visit to this establishment. On my next visit to Louisville I will be trying a different German restaurant. The food was not good nor bad. Just fair. My dessert was stale. The service was good especially for how busy the servers were.
(3)Jeff W.
Just went to Gasthaus for the 2nd time with my wife this weekend and felt I had to write a review to share what a treasure this restaurant is. First off, be sure to make reservations if you're wanting to dine on the weekend. It can be two to three weeks sometimes to get in, so plan early! The interior is a bit kitschy with lots of Bavarian style woodwork, flags and teddy bears around the place. Several areas are enclosed as small houses inside. It's warm and inviting, however, and goes with many of the servers dressed in traditional German outfits. Service has been excellent both times we have visited. Our server was friendly and helpful but efficient and didn't talk our ears off either. Their beer list is excellent with many German varieties for sale. The wine list is small but had several interesting German wines and such. The wife was not pleased with her Pinot (a California variety) but I chose a Washington state Blue Franc (a german grape) and found it excellent. My wife is a vegetarian but Gasthaus has a vegetarian plate that she enjoyed very much. A nice helping of Spaetzel (egg noddles) surrounded by a number of different veggies. She said the vegetables were prepared very well. I had the Jager Schnitzel (pork loin pounded out thin with a brown gravy and mushrooms) and chose the fried potatoes with onions and bacon. Both were outstanding. The plates are huge as well. Gasthaus is known for their unbelievable desserts and they certainly are not to be skipped. The wife had a Fallen Chocolate Torte which she raved about and I had the Strawberry Napoleon. The Napoleon is puffy pastry, rolled in almonds and formed into a ball that's filled with fresh strawberries and French Cream. A smaller ball of the same sits on top. These things are enormous and so good... two people could easily split one. Gasthaus can be a bit pricey (entrees are around $20 each, wine was around $10 a glass). The food is not particularly fancy, but the techniques employed are excellent and ingredients are top notch. We've raved about our experiences both times and will go again, so the prices must be worth it.

AWESOME!!! Great food! Had the Rahm Schnitzel with skillet potatoes and sauerkraut. Tasted just like when I lived in Germany!
