I was misled by the name; figured they'd be able to do a black and tan. That was a disappointment. Since we were here during Belgian beer week, I had a Stone Vertical Epic 09 ... decent drink. At least I got to catch the beginning of the Tour de France... Go Lance, Go!

Flanagan's is awesome! They have a beautiful outdoor patio with a relaxing waterfall. The staff is always super nice and most importantly - they have excellent food! My husband says they also have an equally excellent beer selection. As they are an Ale House, I would hope so.

Loved the place...we were meandering in the Bardstown baxter area and decided to stop for a drink! Service was impeccable, beers were cold. My husbands motto is "bring me another one before this one is gone" and I will tell you, they lived up to his expectations. I wish we were hungry because they had many items I would have loved to had sampled...next time

I'm in love with Flanagan's...there, I admitted it. Now I can move on to explaining why. The food was amazing. I got a Philly Melt, which was thin sliced steak, mushrooms, onions, and beer cheese on ciabatta bread. The bread was nicely soft, the beer cheese was awesome, oh, and the sweet potato fries I got on the side were good, too. Their buffalo sauce isn't anything different, but it's tasty if you're into that kind of thing. Their beer list is impressive...since I'm allergic to beer, I was excited to see a new brand of cider on tap. For an extra dollar, you can make any burger into a bison burger, which I know entices some people. I was told that the bison was good, but no, I wouldn't try a bite...too squeamish about new foods, haha.

Great pretzel and beer cheese appetizer, awesome burgers and hot brown sandwich! Best deal of all $.25 cup of bean soup.

I like the food here. If you show up on a Thursday what ever beer is sponsoring that day they give out a free glass, mug, or cup from that company. With that being said Thursdays is always packed early because it's near the college. I been here 3 times and not once have I gotten a dam glass. I will find myself back in this area for work and will get my glass.

This place has a decent selection of beers. Most are bottled, but they have Left Hand's Milk Stout on nitro. The patio is nice and there was plenty of room for the crowds following the night races at Churchill Downs. The prices are pretty good too.

A few friends and I gathered here for an early happy hour. Staff was excellent and attentive. Snacks were fine and I hear the beer was good. Just a note that they have this promotion that if you drink 99 different beers you get a mug. It is not retroactive nor does it have to be done on one night ;-)

This place had a diverse drink list, great food and a lively crowd. My husband were passing through on a trip from Cleveland to Memphis and Louisville was our half way point. Seemed like a really awesome district and we decided to stop in to Flanagan's because of it's YELP reviews. We were glad we did!!

wasn't bad. our server was very good, she had a 15 top with my group and another 10 top. drinks were kept full, entire order was correct. food was okay, just bar food, but it was a good experience overall.

Love this place! The patio is one of the greatest places in town on a nice day to sit and enjoy a good beer selection. The food is good and fair priced as well

Absolute WORST service I've EVER had in a restaurant. It took a total of 3 people to wait on us and all seemed more bothered than the least bit hospitable. The supposed waitress actually came to our table practically 20 minutes after we had been seated asking if we what we wanted to drink when we had drinks in front of us that we had to ask another server for. At NO point did anyone follow up with us on drinks or food. As a final insult she came to the table with the check 15 minutes after we asked for drink refills with no drinks. Food was average at best ( 5 guys and fries would have sufficed ) and an HOUR AND TEN MINUTES for a burger and fries. Anyone thinking this is good food or service doesn't get out much. Will NEVER recommend or return to this establishment. I only gave it a star because YELP will not accept a review without one. They deserved minus stars.

Loving the 5 beer sampler for under six bucks. And good beers too! Not cheap domestics. My wife and I were just passing through and saw the other good Yelp ratings for this joint. We're glad we stopped in. The atmosphere's great and the service was even better. Granted, we were there watching Monday night football and the crowd wasn't that deep, but our waitress was extremely pleasant. The food we ordered was good too. Try the mozzerella bread sticks. They're huge. They're also amazing. Great for sharing w/ a good crew

Flanagan's has the best Fried Fish and onion rings both a little spicy, extra crispy with a tartar sauce on the side that's not your usual but something with a little ZIP! Also for you meat lovers, the Burger Orleans and the Murphy Melt are not to be missed. My neighbors and I love spending an afternoon in the Beer Garden, or sitting in the front window booth and watching the traffic and passerbys on Baxter Ave. Hands down has the best atmosphere, and great waitstaff of any of the "Irish Pubs" on Baxter!

    (5)
  • Michael C.

My brother suggested this - It's a great big Irish pub right in the heart of the highlands. They have a huge patio out back, two bars, great service, and great drinks. Turned one friend onto his very first Irish Car Bomb here :) This is someplace I will definitely revisit.

Flanagan's is one of my favorite spots in the Highlands. Good beer selection, great pub menu with good food, good service, good atmosphere, and a fantastic location. When the weather's right, nothing's better than sitting at a booth by the window looking out on the street. Here is one of the few places I know of where you can get Falls City consistently on tap. I mean, there are probably others, but are they as good as Flanagan's? Probably not. I'd recommend the Morton Avenue sandwich for food. A pile of really delicious roast beef, bacon, a slice of cheese, and a "stone ground mustard and horseradish aioli" that just makes the sandwich. All on three slices of really good toasted bread. $9 with a side. Sides include rice pilaf (which is actually really good), cranberry cole slaw, mashed potatoes... Basically, a lot of alternatives to fries. Certainly more than you find at most pubs. Check the specials for ideas. They have $1 off all drafts during happy hour (3-7) but also have daily drink specials.

Stopped in here on the advice of other yelpers, and I must say I was seriously dissapointed. ATMOSPHERE: It looks PROMISING from the outside, with a nice looking outdoor patio. Get closer, and you'll see it's really bedraggled, and needs serious work to be up to par - I'm not even sure it's sanitary! There's a very large fountain / pond area that hasn't been cleaned in a long, long time if ever. There is algae-filled green water in it with no working fountain, and the whole thing is a breeding ground for the swarms of mosquitos that plagued us the entire meal. Add to that a swarm of flys that landed on every bit of food or drink on our table, and the biting ants running around in droves on the ground because it hadn't been swept, and that should be enough to keep any respectable person away. If not, consider the fact that the patio is apparently open to smokers to puff their lives away (and ours too, since the tables are close and we got sandwiched in between 2 chimney smokers). FOOD: Unimaginative. I had a beer burger and it was cooked improperly, my husband had the reuben and there was way, way too much saukeraut to be able to enjoy it - he quite literally had to shovel it off just to eat. Our children had the chicken tenders from the kid's section, and they were so heavily seasoned with pepper even I couldn't eat them. Shame, shame... SERVICE: Nonexistent, pretty much. Our order taker (note, NOT server) showed up to take our order and to deliver our drinks, and that was it. Never once did she check on the food, or we would have returned it, and we had to ask another person for our check. VALUE: Poor. The bug issue, lack of service, and terrible quality food left a bad taste in my mouth, literally. You couldn't pay me to return. I'm hoping that this was a freak occurance, and that my other yelpers have had their experiences INSIDE, but I don't think so....

I still love Flanagan's atmosphere. But I had to update the review on those wings alone. They must have changed the recipe on the wings. They are still jumbo and fried; but now the wings are pre-marinated with buffalo sauce flavor and THEN fried. So if you are like me and do not like Buffalo flavor but prefer sweeter heat...you're out of luck. There is no way to avoid the sour heat. As much as I longed for those juicy fried wings...I could not keep eating after picking through a couple of them. But if you love Buffalo flavor, you would love these.

My favorite bar in the city if I have to choose on any given night. Everyone knows it is the place to be for UK or UL games, couldn't ask for a better game atmosphere. The bar tenders are great, very friendly and willing to take a minute to get to know you. The best part is the food. Two words......Murphy Melt. Oh and if you can't handle a burger try the beer cheese and pretzel. We are not talking the store bought frozen pretzel almost every bar in town serves, no this is a pretzel you will go back for again and again. Definitely hand made and the beer cheese is not store bought either. Yes I admit it, I could eat here every night if I had to and I would be happy with that. Not your dancing place but a good place to hang out with friends.

  • Andy S.

First off - the review by Kathleen W. is inaccurate. She is talking about a different bar in the same neighborhood. Flanagans "Irish" bar is my favorite "Irish" bar in Louisville. The beer list is extensive, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable of the hundreds of beers they serve. A few people have affectionately nicknamed the bartender the "Beer Fairy". On Thursday nights they spotlight a different beer, tapping the keg at 7pm and the first 100 customers get to keep their pint glass. I don't think of Flanagans as being an "Irish" bar but as a standout neighborhood bar and grill. Need something to eat? Want to try a new beer? Go to Flanagans. They've got a great patio that's perfect for having a pint on a nice afternoon. I get the impression this place fills up with college kids on Friday and Saturday night. But that's pretty much every bar in the area. Whatever, let's go get a beer.

    (5)
  • Blake M.

Best burger in town. No question. Sure, you have to deal with drunk thirty-somethings looking for love if you go on a Saturday night, but the burger is worth it.

  • Melanie K.

Go for Dancing and Beer and stop there. The name says it all, an Ale house. I go to Flanagan, head to the back room, and start my inappropriate dancing. They have an amazing out door patio, but I have never seen this place in the daylight. The DJ is usually pretty solid and if you are not in the mood for the Dance fair, stay upfront and sip on some great pints. This venue always has great service and is kept tidy, but I was unaware they even served food. Shows were my priorities lie with this establishment. Expect a cover after 9pm and no live music.

  • Kristen M.

Good place to get your drink on. Came on a Saturday night, and we had a great time chilling out on the patio by the fountain. They have something for everyone here (Irish bar up front, patio out back, and an indoor dance club type area connected to the patio.) This place can fit lots of people without feeling overcrowded. They do charge a cover, but at $3/ person, I wasn't about to get my panties in a bunch. That's nothing!

  • Scott M.

Great Place and if I am in the highlands it is where I end up at if I want a drink. Love the lay of the place, the outdoor section is great!!! The staff is fun and friendly. I run a monthly support group and this is our Highland Hot Spot! Sure to have a good time!!!

  • Jamie C.

Another great place to eat. Their burgers are to die for. I won't set foot near this place on the weekends due to the over-abundance of 21 year old sorority and frat idiots, weekend warriors, and the like, but during the week, it is a perfect lunch or even dinner spot. It's basically just bar food, but it's damn good bar food might I say. I said in another review that Bluegrass Burgers are the best in Louisville, but this place is right up there in their burger quality. The fries are even amazing.

  • Rachel F.

Flanagan's is just one of those places that for some things is a total 2-star and for others a 5-star. The hard part is knowing how the bar will be on a given night and being in the mood for what, in my opinion, it is best for. Dancing. Granted, I am practically always in the mood for dancing, but it is much more fun to have a couple others also in the mood. A good, fun group of 5-10 makes for a grand Friday or Saturday night. Keep in mind, it could be dead or it could be packed. If you are single and on the prowl, there tend to be a good bit of 20's there looking to be a little silly and meet people. Bar outside right by the dance floor is pretty clutch. And don't order a Manhattan or a Whiskey Sour. This isn't a super nice bar (the inside pub area is much more so if that's what you're looking for. It is the place where most folks are drinking screwdrivers, rum and coke, or bud light. And you know what? That's not always a bad thing. On the other hand, there isn't anything particularly incredible or memorable for me about Flanagans. The service is okay (even when not crowded), the dance floor definitely takes ya back a couple decades (though highly amusing) and it is by no means classy. Just a good straight up, pub meets dance club that Louisville has somehow cornered the market on. And sometimes that's just what you need!

Oh Flanagan's. You are such a mixed bag. I usually go during the week. On Thursdays they sell special edition pints, and you get to take home the glass. They start at 7:00 and they go fast, so get there early if you want to be sure to get your special glass. Their beer selection is good. The menu is varied, and covers pretty much all standard pub fare, including pizzas. Their beer cheese and pretzels are quite good, and I had a very tasty Buffalo chicken sandwich recently. Service leaves quite a bit to be desired. I suppose it could be poor luck on my part, but I always seem to get a server that doesn't seem to have any idea what is going on. Slow, distracted, and uniformed service has left me without a beverage for up to fifteen minutes on more than one occasion. Their outdoor seating area is large, and very dog friendly. The good outweighs the bad here, so I keep going back, but with all the options in town, I think their success is largely dependent on premium location and all-purpose appeal.

I've been to Flanagan's twice now, once just for drinks and the other for food/drinks. The first time there I was happy with the service and impressed by the drink selection. I enjoyed the atmosphere and put it on my list of places to visit again. After visiting for a second time I now never wish to go back. The food was excellent and the drink selection was the same vast selection as before but our waitress was HORRIBLE-- so awful that I now only think bad things about Flanagan's. The waitress continually ignored us, didn't know the specials, and insulted me on being from a different state (multiple times I was insulted). Because of this waitress it will be some time before I even think to visit again.

Flanagan's is great. The patio is dog-friendly, which bumped this review from 4 to 5 stars. Keep the glass nights have expanded my cup collection. Food is excellent (burgers are superb, beer cheese is very tasty). Not to mention the extensive beer list, always something new to try (get a beer card to keep track of what you've tried - also good at O'Shea's right down the street). Gets a little crowded and fratty on the weekends, but it's Baxter Avenue, to be expected.

An "Irish Pub" that serves pizza and pasta? Just call it a neighborhood bar or something, seriously. Flanagans is hit or miss. I've gone a number of times now on Wednesdays for trivia. Some days the food is good, some days the service is good, other days one is acceptable the other isn't, and from time to time you lose on both fronts. The beer cheese is good, as is the Old Alehouse Sandwich (with alfredo sauce at least, haven't tried the marinara version). The Philly cheese steak I had high hopes for because, after all it has beer cheese on it, but it was thoroughly disappointing. The meat quality was marginal (I know, I know it's a cheesesteak, but it's a $9 one) and the "ciabatta bread" was probably the worst sandwich roll I've ever had in a restaurant. Like Wonder Bread but without any of the nostalgia that made you ignore how bad it was. I would also recommend the Southern Fried Chicken sandwich because their breading is really tasty and they give you like half a chicken on a bun. They have a huge selection of beers, but not too many of them on tap, which is somewhat disappointing. Go for happy hour or on Pint Night Thursdays for the best drinking deal.

What does 100 beers on tap, the Blues Brothers, Karaoke and a giant lizard have in common? Flanagan's. 5 beers and a shot of bad bourban later, this place became a 4 star joint. Lots of beer, a transparent dance floor that looks down on a lizard and a karaoke machine with no line but 2 chicks who are obviously regulars. Yes Juicy, I sang. Half of Madonna's "Holiday", some "I Will Survive" and I would have been willing to do a Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers duet if I hadn't noticed the camera on video mode pointed at me. I don't need that shit on some work related blog.

My new home in Louisville! I love a place that makes travelers like me feel welcome. The staff here is so friendly that you feel like you live around the block, feel like you've been coming here for years and they're happy to see you. Katie is, far and away, one of the best bartenders that I've ever met - friendly, attentive and can sling the craic quite well for an American. Lunch was excellent - the regulars are welcoming and friendly, plus the food is really good. I had the "Fiesta Salad" and loved it. Quite fresh and just the right size. Beer selection is very tuned to local brews, which is always good. Thursday nights are fun, as this is when they debut new draft beers. The breweries send along some proper drinking implements, which are yours to keep, making for a great party atmosphere! Overall, a fine time to be had here - good food, good drink and you feel like you're at your local - even if you're from Brooklyn.

Flanagans has some of the better pub food in town. Their menu is pretty decent and the beer choices usually can satisfy most people. It's definitely a local haunt sort of place and many of the clientele are fairly regular. If you're looking for a place to be chill, grab a burger and chat with friends, give it a go on the weeknights. Weekends , especially during the summer are loud and crowded. If you're into that, it's nothing special but can still be a good time. Usually busy, but always friendly, I would definitely recommend it.

Flanagan's is a great Irish bar in Louisville. It has one of the best back patios in the city. It has one of the best beer selections in the city. It's in a great location on Baxter Ave surrounded by all of the other bars in the Highlands. It has decent food, but it isn't spectacular either. It can get very busy on Friday and Saturday nights like any place in the Highlands, so if that's not your thing then don't go there. If you like a loud crowded atmosphere then this is a great place for you. There's also a cool back bar where they'll have bands on busy nights.

  • Brittney H.

I will give this place a solid 4 star and that s specifically for trivia night! Come for trivia on a Thursday night and drink up since it is ALSO pint night! Cheap draft beers every hour on the hour! PLUS YOU GET TO KEEP THE PINT GLASS. These are pints will match the beer you just bought! How. Cool. Then you will have an entire cupboard full of glasses and your girlfriend/boyfriend/roomie will be thrilled!!

  • Madison S.

The place was pretty good. The beer was expensive, but they had a good selection of draft and bottled beers. I got the Ranger IPA, which I recommend, although it was pricy for a college student. Overall, good environment.

Flanagan's used to be one of my favorite hangouts! I was here all the time on the weekends and sometimes during the week. In my opinion they have THE BEST beer cheese and homemade pretzels in all of Louisville. I'm craving them right now! I usually have to ask for an extra cheese when I place my order because I can't get enough. This is normally my whole meal and I'm happy that way. :) Some of the other food items I've tried and liked are the buffalo chicken cheese balls and the chicken quesadilla. The benedictine turkey sandwich was pretty darn good too. I've always considered Flanagan's more of a bar for drinks rather than a foodie haven. They have a terrific selection of beers and booze. I love the atmosphere. Irish pubs/bars are my thing! They have a nice outdoor patio area too. The back bar has music and a small place to dance on the weekends. I love when the weather is nice and they open the windows in the main bar. If you can nab a booth near the front you have the perfect place to sit, people watch and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. On my last visit I only had a few drinks at the bar and then headed home. I'll be back soon though. Gotta have a fresh hot pretzel with that yummy creamy beer cheese!!

  • Catie S.

Flanagan's is consistent with their service and food. The patio is dog-friendly to the point where they will bring a bowl or bucket of fresh, cool water for your pooch. This visit we had the pretzels and beer cheese to start, which was perfectly salty and warm. Grilled chicken sandwiches quickly followed, which were equally tasty. Our iced teas stayed filled, as did the water for our dog. Our server was friendly and attentive. We will be back!

I love Flanagan's. The atmosphere is fun. They have plenty of seating and a huge patio in the back. Great beer selection. Great happy hour. Great bar food. I've tried numerous things from their menu; everything has been really good, although nothing stands out as a must-get. Overall, Flanagan's is probably my top bar choice for beer/food combo along this stretch of Bardstown road.

Flanagan's Ale House reminds me of the neighborhood Tavern's I used to frequent in Chicago. Welcoming, warm and a lot of fun. The only difference being very few of the Tavern's in Chicago had food this good. We couldn't have picked a better place to eat on our first official night as Louisville residents. The move left us tired, beat up and hungry. We needed food and alcohol, STAT!!! Flanagan's has an impressive beer list that has something for everybody, but the highlight of our visit was the food. I ordered one of their Philly Steak Sandwiches that was out of this world. It was just what the Doctor ordered. All and all, we had a great time and Flanagan's. The food, atmosphere and over -all vibe were top notch. Its right around the corner from our new Digs, so I'm sure we will stop in often.

Going to Flanagan's -- aka Flanny's -- feels a bit like hopping in a time machine and going back to college. The beer is flowing and decently priced; the crowd is a decent mix of hipsters, bros and the gals who love them; and I've seen more than a few people happily bragging about how inebriated they are. But then again, as a 30-something, I don't feel like an old creeper hanging out with the kiddos when I'm there. Of all the Irish bars in this stretch of Baxter Avenue in the Highlands, Flanny's is definitely my favorite, for these reasons: * Awesome patio. If you can secure some seats on the patio during the St. Patrick's Day Parade in the Highlands, do it ... or rather don't ... and leave more seats for my friends and I. ;-) * Impressive beer list. Flanny's has a two-page beer menu, organized by style. If you can't find a beer you like on this list, you are a beer snob of extraordinary variety. * And for the beer snobs, Flanny's has the Mug Club. Get 100 beers checked off on your Mug Club card, and you will receive a handmade, personalized mug, which entitles you to special prices on select beers. * Great pint night. Yep, this one brings me back to my college days, when Pint Nights helped me round out my glassware. But even though I'm older and wiser, I still can't turn down a new pint glass -- and this is especially true when it comes filled with tasty beer. My Flying Dog Brewery glasses are still some of my favorites. Pint Night starts at 7 p.m. on Thursdays. * Game Day specials. On my most recent visit, which was during a UofL football game, Flanny's offered a selection of their appetizers at buy-one-get-one free. * And speaking of, their pub grub is definitely deep fried, greasy and tasty. The food is not "artisan." No truffle fries or bacon-encrusted tilapia bites here, but it's definitely several notches above straight-from-the-grocery-store frozen pizza bites. The buffalo chicken balls are particularly good. * Trivia. I admit I need to go to trivia nights more often, but some of my favorites were spent here. Embrace that small bit of Irish heritage inside of you, grab a pint and enjoy a few hours at Flanny's.

Originally, I wasn't a fan of Flannigans. Their nighttime atmosphere isn't anything special on a street full of so many standout bars. But where the bar shines is what it looks like during the week. Great beer choices. Great atmosphere during games. Fun and generally classier people than some of the the dive bars on Bardstown road. Clean and professional. Lots of seating. And amazing food. I definitely enjoy going here for a beer and burger, and watching a game.

Maybe we went on an off day as our experience was way different than most of the other reviews. Out of 6 people none of us had anything that was very good. The soft pretzels and cheese appetizer was not very good. Soft pretzels at the Sams Club cafeteria are miles better. Cheese fries and onion rings? Good enough. Flatbread pizza? Meh. Chicken salad? Nope/don't. Shrimp po boy? Meh. The lone bright spot was friendly and efficient service. If you are in the area try the taco place a few doors down (if you can find an open table) instead.

Service was very quick even though they were busy for pint night and march madness! I ordered the hot brown sandwich, it tasted good but was a little dry; it could have used some mornay sauce. I had a side of mashed potatoes that were very good.

So I may have met a blind date here or two....why? It's the spot I know, the spot I am always comfortable when I walk in-did I mention the food and drinks? They make a mean razztini, which is hard to come by. I love their beer cheese and pretzels, the mini burgers and the spicy cheese balls. And if you are meeting someone that likes beer: this place has an abundant selection. Great spot in the summer to also just kick back on their patio with friends....

One of the best beer selections in Louisville. The food is great overall. I love their sweet potato fries. Great buffalo chicken sandwich. The biggest knock is the location. Normally you have to park 1/4 of a mile away and walk. The place is normally busy so service can be slow.

Mostly dig this place for the crowded back patio on Saturday night. Came on a slow Monday to grab some dinner and wasn't disappointed. Sever was very prompt and polite. For starters me and some friends shared pretzel bread and beer cheese, very well rounded flavor. A lot of flavor but not too strong. Pretzel bread came out very hot, buttery, and sufficiently salted. My entree was the buffalo chicken sandwich. Flavor was decent but the chicken breast was very large. Usually I wouldn't complain about a nice big sandwich, what kind of man would? The bread was very small in comparison to the large, and obviously hormone loaded, hunk of chicken. Would love to come back to give the menu another shot, but would recommend the spot to anyone trying to find a nice outside bar area over the weekend.

Awesome Irish bar with all the stuff you need to have a blast. Down to earth people, Jameson, harp, great food, drunks (just enough, not too much), and some Irish tunes. Patio can be nice if weather permits! Slainte!

Been going here a long time. I think the beer lines and taps need a good cleaning. Last few times the beer tasted funny. Friend i was with said something also and realized it wasnt just our own thoughts. Staff is still friendly and personable but dont think i can go back until they fix the beer situation. Bad day for my old favorite place.

I had the hot ham and cheese - it was good but the sauce it came with was sort of thick and weird - it would have been better with a cheese sauce or just mustard. Nice place though, I would come back for sure.

I've been here several times, but the last was on a Monday evening and my friend and I got to sit right at the bar. They had some good drink specials until 6:00 so we took advantage. The food looks great although I've never personally ordered some. It just seems like everytime I've gone there was right after eating somewhere else. I need to fix that. The beer selection is wonderful.

Not sure why I haven't reviewed Flanagan's until now. This is pretty much my go-to hangout place. I generally go on Thursday nights because they have pint nights where they feature a couple different craft and/or import beers where you get to keep the brewery's glass it comes in. I have a whole cabinet and a couple boxes worth of glassware from here to prove it. Plus trivia in the back on Thursday nights is always fun. Just make sure you ask for prices first, as they are not listed. Generally you're looking at $5-$6 per pint on average. But I've had more than a few $9-$12 per pint surprises when the check comes. Pretty large and interesting place. The main area is a double-sided bar with plenty of stools on both sides surrounded by booths and tables lining the walls. Definitely an Irish pub look to the place. Plenty of TVs tuned to various sports. Great place to watch a game. A short walk down the hallway will most likely lead to a bathroom door to the face, (narrow hallway with bathroom doors that open out into it). Once you straighten out your nose from the door hit, the hallway leads out to the patio area which is quaint, especially during nice weather. Plenty of tables and seating. This is also the smokers' area. In the corner of the patio is an outdoor bar that is in a drop-down heated enclosure for the smokers during the colder months. This is also the entrance to the back bar area which has a name that I don't remember. The back bar is roughly the same size as the main bar area, but far less Irish look or feel here. But there are lots more tables, booths, and stools at the bar back here should the main bar or patio be too crowded. Lots more large screen TVs tuned to sports back here as well. The wait staff is always friendly and helpful in describing their beers and helpful in steering those who are not craft beer geeks like myself in making a beer choice suitable to their liking. Draft beer list is fairly sizable with roughly around 15 or craft and import beers of varying styles. And what they don't have on draft, they probably have in bottles. Fairly large, albeit pricey selection of bottled beers. Your certain to find several things worth drinking regardless of your tastes. Food here is excellent as well. I highly recommend the bread sticks and the spicy cheese balls as appetizers. The Buffalo chicken sandwich and Highland classic cheeseburger are my go-to's for main dishes. The pizza here is also surprisingly good, especially for a bar. Generally fairly crowded from Thursday night - Saturday night, especially during Spring and Summer months. Other nights tend to be far less crowded. Overall I have never had a bad experience here. Certainly one of the nicer, friendlier bars on Bardstown Road. And while there is a strong college crowd draw to the place, it's not the fratboy party types. Much more of an easy going, hangout with friends vibe. Great place to watch a game and enjoy some good beers and good food.

Holy Happy Hour Batman. HUGE (40 oz?) mug of Bud for $2, $3 wines, and $1 off craft beers every week day 4-7 and Fridays until 9! I was feeling pretty good for $10:) Great spicy Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and sweet potatoe fries. Large enough to split and leaves more room for the giant beer.

I read the good review in Courier-Journal a few weeks ago, took their advice and made the trip from Indiana. If I could, I'd post a review with three and a half stars. This is good pub food and the beer selection is HUGE. Honestly the beer listing is larger than anyone else's food menu and I appreciated the many options. They also filled my growler with no problems. We started with a quesadilla, which was nice and consisted of large portions. My wife wasn't all that hunger this evening, so I had the fish & chips and enjoyed this. The fish had a very good taste while the fries and cole slaw were spot on and was the help. I'd good back the next time that I'm in the area.

I recently moved to the Highlands and have been to Flanagan's to catch up on some March Madness. The nights that I've been there the atmosphere is laid back, chill, but still with plenty of people there. They have a great selection of beer, the food is awesome, and the prices are very reasonable. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

There are many Irish bars in Lou, but Flanny's is my favorite. Their patio is the best in town! I love their pretzels and beer cheese and their cheese bread is awesome! I've had private parties in their Red Room and it's very reasonable. The employees are always friendly and informative about the menu. The beer list is varied and lengthy. I am not a huge beer drinker, but their recommendations have always been spot on!

I like the environment and they have a good beer selection but the food was just kind of meh. I had the murphy melt and it was good but not great. Thought it was a little pricey as well, but maybe I'm just stingy. Really nice when the windows are open.

Huh. Did you know Flanagan's had food? And was open for lunch? This was news to me. I'd only ever been there at night for drinks, when we learned they were hosting a fundraiser we wanted to support. Holy crap, that was a good bison burger! Why didn't anyone tell me? The sweet potator fries were about average - but average sweet potato fries are still delicious. Everyone I went with seemed to enjoy their food as well. I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 4 because our service was pretty slow - that may have been a function of the larger than usual lunch crowd due to the fundraiser. I've never had a problem with the service at night, but I'm not generally in a hurry at night. The other weird thing - and this would be why I usually stick to beer - my companion ordered a hot tea. It's winter, it's cold, people tend to do that sort of thing. It was served in a giant plastic Coke glass. W T and F. No explanation, just a burning hot glass of tea. I was a little nervous about the plastic melting, but it seemed to hold up. So if you go - and by all means go (seriously, get the bison burger) - just order a beer like you are supposed to. They have all kinds of appropriate cups for beer.

I've been to Flanagan's so many times, I can't believe I'm just now getting around to writing the review. Pint night is great (I think here it's on Tuesdays) so if you really enjoy trying new brews you should stop in for a drink. I like getting new glasses for my house (they come with the beer of the evening), even though my husband hates it when the glasses in our cabinets don't match - it's worth the argument. Their food is fine, it's pub grub which isn't usually disappointing any place. The bathrooms are always clean, and at the times I go I've never had an issue finding a place to sit. If you are into dancing you should check out the bar in the back which is basically an old mother-in-law suite that's been converted for the use. There is also a great outdoor seating area which is lovely in the spring and autumn. If you've not yet been to Flanagan's it's worth the effort to give it a shot. If it's not your thing, there are only 1.3 million other bars within walking distance to choose from. Enjoy.

  • Andy C.

It depends on what you want. At night it's a packed pub with a dance floor, not a good place to just go have some good brews. During the day it is a calm place to go eat a pub fare lunch if you are looking for that. I am rarely looking for either of those. There are many places around the area with much better food, and many places to go dancing all night. If it's what your looking for- there are many options for you on that strip of Baxter Ave. Have fun!

I love the atmosphere of this place and the food is decent. They have a really good fried chicken sandwich. I rate it 3 out of 5 because I think its a bit over priced for what you get.

We were here after the St. Paddy's Day parade, so I knew to expect a crowd. And it was there. There was still some space to move around and we snagged ourselves a table in order to get some food. I think I had the Orleans burger which was pretty delicious. The drinks were crazy over-priced. Maybe I am just too used to my beloved dive bars where I can get a stronger drink, double the size, for half the price. Either way...it just seems way too high. I like coming here on less crowded nights to dance. But I need to make sure that I am set, drink-wise or otherwise done drinking for the night because the prices are just too rich for my blood.

Came to Flanagan's with good friends of mine around the holiday's and we order Beer Cheese and a big pretzel and it taste great and also had a beer and a Orleans burger it was alright. The bar/restaurant look just like any neighborhood bar you would walk into and the atmosphere and service was A-OK.

Years before Flanagan's, the "Wee Wash" occupied this space. I used to do my laundry there. Wee Wash closes, then up goes some place called Flanagan's Ale house. When they first opened, I wasn't at all impressed with. They only sold bottles of beer and recall the cheapest one being $5.00. Sorry to sound cheap, but WAY too much for the limited selection. Little by little over the years, I watched this place transform into a cool place. When I do go back to Louisville, Flanagan's is one of the few places I enjoy going back to. Here are the goods: * Rather large selection of beer on tap and bottle * Mixed drinks are good * Beer garden is spacious and cozy * Food's not bad I typically laugh or shrug at what some people call a beer garden. However, Flanagan's beer garden is actually quite comfortable to sit back outside and enjoy the drinks and conversation. It seems there is a small room in the back with separate bar that is possibly for reserved parties? Luckily, I haven't needed the Wee Wash some time and don't miss it. Great place to meet friends and enjoy the time.

The place was pretty good. The beer was expensive, but they had a good selection of draft and bottled beers. I got the Ranger IPA, which I recommend, although it was pricy for a college student. Overall, good environment.

Great neighborhood bar with lots of brews on tap. Attentive bartenders and servers. Food was good--try the beer cheese and pretzels. There is plentiful outdoor seating when the weather is right. The only downside is that this place, like others in the area, gets jam packed on weekends.

Enjoy.

Great Place and if I am in the highlands it is where I end up at if I want a drink. Love the lay of the place, the outdoor section is great!!! The staff is fun and friendly. I run a monthly support group and this is our Highland Hot Spot! Sure to have a good time!!!

Best burger in town. No question. Sure, you have to deal with drunk thirty-somethings looking for love if you go on a Saturday night, but the burger is worth it.

  • Becki H.

Flanagan's is awesome! They have a beautiful outdoor patio with a relaxing waterfall. The staff is always super nice and most importantly - they have excellent food! My husband says they also have an equally excellent beer selection. As they are an Ale House, I would hope so.

  • Moses G.

My brother suggested this - It's a great big Irish pub right in the heart of the highlands. They have a huge patio out back, two bars, great service, and great drinks. Turned one friend onto his very first Irish Car Bomb here :) This is someplace I will definitely revisit.

  • Daniel R.

This place has a decent selection of beers. Most are bottled, but they have Left Hand's Milk Stout on nitro. The patio is nice and there was plenty of room for the crowds following the night races at Churchill Downs. The prices are pretty good too.

  • Bruce R.

I was misled by the name; figured they'd be able to do a black and tan. That was a disappointment. Since we were here during Belgian beer week, I had a Stone Vertical Epic 09 ... decent drink. At least I got to catch the beginning of the Tour de France... Go Lance, Go!

Great neighborhood bar with lots of brews on tap. Attentive bartenders and servers. Food was good--try the beer cheese and pretzels. There is plentiful outdoor seating when the weather is right. The only downside is that this place, like others in the area, gets jam packed on weekends.

The place was pretty good. The beer was expensive, but they had a good selection of draft and bottled beers. I got the Ranger IPA, which I recommend, although it was pricy for a college student. Overall, good environment.

I used to love this place. The service is awful lately. But they have great beers. I love to drink here.

Enjoy.

Great Place and if I am in the highlands it is where I end up at if I want a drink. Love the lay of the place, the outdoor section is great!!! The staff is fun and friendly. I run a monthly support group and this is our Highland Hot Spot! Sure to have a good time!!!

Best burger in town. No question. Sure, you have to deal with drunk thirty-somethings looking for love if you go on a Saturday night, but the burger is worth it.

  • C R.

Great neighborhood bar with lots of brews on tap. Attentive bartenders and servers. Food was good--try the beer cheese and pretzels. There is plentiful outdoor seating when the weather is right. The only downside is that this place, like others in the area, gets jam packed on weekends.

Flanagan's is awesome! They have a beautiful outdoor patio with a relaxing waterfall. The staff is always super nice and most importantly - they have excellent food! My husband says they also have an equally excellent beer selection. As they are an Ale House, I would hope so.

My brother suggested this - It's a great big Irish pub right in the heart of the highlands. They have a huge patio out back, two bars, great service, and great drinks. Turned one friend onto his very first Irish Car Bomb here :) This is someplace I will definitely revisit.

This place has a decent selection of beers. Most are bottled, but they have Left Hand's Milk Stout on nitro. The patio is nice and there was plenty of room for the crowds following the night races at Churchill Downs. The prices are pretty good too.

  • Bruce R.

Great burgers, great service! No dessert menu. But good nonetheless. Go with a friend & sit at the bar!

I was misled by the name; figured they'd be able to do a black and tan. That was a disappointment. Since we were here during Belgian beer week, I had a Stone Vertical Epic 09 ... decent drink. At least I got to catch the beginning of the Tour de France... Go Lance, Go!

Had a nice lunch on their back patio. Smoked Gouda Burger with sweet potato fries. Delish and not over the top. Good service.

Love this place! The patio is one of the greatest places in town on a nice day to sit and enjoy a good beer selection. The food is good and fair priced as well
