Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I like the food here. But, I seriously drove around for 30 minutes trying to find this damn place. The GPS is not so great with this joint. Also, when we finally found the place our waitress was less than accommodating. I am very lame when it comes to my Mexican food. At places like this, I order a taco salad minus the salad. It's just ground beef with cheese in the taco salad shell. Well, apparently this was the most confounding thing this waitress had ever heard. She kept looking at me like I was telling her I'd I wanted a plastic monkey to eat for dinner. It was meat, cheese and a shell....THAT'S IT! It's not that hard! When the food finally got to me it was quite tasty...but...seriously...figure it out, lady!

Just started a new job here in Louisville and needed some Mexican food (one of my favorite types). Saw the good reviews on El Torazo and decided to try it. After going twice now, I can say it will fill your needs for Americanized Mexican food, complete with white cheese and all. I got the combination plate the first night (burrito, chimichanga, and enchilada) and loved it. My only complaint was that I'm used to chimis being offered with shredded beef and that was not an option. Otherwise it was great. You get nice sized portions with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, and some pico. Ended up around $12 for the meal with a drink. Second night, I got a burrito meal (supremo I think?) with one chicken and one steak. This was delicious. The chicken was seasoned and flavorful and the steak was very tender (which is usually a problem at Mexican restaurants). Also, the Toro dip (ground beef and pico in white cheese) is great. All in all, I'm very happy with El Toro and will definitely be back. Only 4 stars from me because of the lack of shredded beef and it was a bit pricey, but I enjoyed it.

Holy Smokes! What is wrong with people in KY and liking this nasty, so called, Mexican food?!? This place was horrible. The problem with Mexican food in the Midwest? They put friggin' queso on everything. This is what's called, "Good enough for Gringo" Mexican food. The rice was dry, the refried beans resembled a light brown pudding and they didn't have horchata. Folks, my opinion on this food is biased being that I'm brown and from California. Do yourselves a favor and travel southwest or to California and then judge this crap.

We had a group of seven and we were placed in what we considered a back room. There wasn't any ambiance to speak of. The food was average and the service was a little slow. We have experienced better for the same price.
(2)Dan W.
Service is excellent, fast and accurate, the prices are ok, the decor is clean and pleasant. The food, unfortunately, is only mediocre. The mole sauce was relatively bland. My kids ordered more American-style food from the kids' menu, and were singularly unimpressed.

Very simple.....good service (fast and friendly), good food quality, very consistent, first place I think of when I want Mexican food. I have had better Mexican in other cities but for Louisville is the best we have. It is a good sign when entire Mexican families eat here on a regular basis. They get it right every time.
(5)Jason R.
As far as I am concerned, this is the best Mexican restaurant in Louisville. The food is always excellent and consistent and the service is exceptional. They use quality meats and ingredients. No big globs of fat in the meat like some of the other mexian restaurants in town. Plus they have some authentic items, dishes and drinks. A favorite of mine is the horchata and theirs is great!!
(5)Brian J.
I was told I had to try this Mexican restaurant. Guess I should of said NO. For the high reviews this place gets you think the food was high quality. The chips and salsa was good and chips tasted fresh non greasy, which I wish I had stopped there. I must say the steak burritos I ordered looked tiny and the steak was a low quality beef jerky. Chewy and flavorless. The rice was so bad i scooped some up and made my friend try it. He said "Gross LOL"I gave 2 stars as the place is kept clean and bathroom was spotless which is unusual. If they put some time and love in the food than they have something worth visiting. save your money as there are better places in town. To top it off I was given a shortage in change after paying . Always check.

The service was excellent! Our server checked in with us and made sure that we had everything that we needed. He knew how to manage his tables well especially considering that this place gets busy on the weekends. As for the food, I had the enchilada plate and it was delicious as well as filling. You have a choice of four different fillings and three different sauces and it includes rice and beans. All for $8.95! Great meal for a great price! I do have to say that their burritos are not as large as one would expect. They are the same size as the enchiladas.

Went here to grab a quick bite and catch some of the US/Mexico gold cup game. Friendly staff, good food, reasonably priced, clean. Quesadilla nachos - Ok, I'm not a fan of refried beans, and IMO they should never be on nachos Carnitas (see pic) - Fantastic! The pork was cooked amazingly, it was melting in your mouth - highly recommended Tacos de Carne Asada (see pic) - Good, but not great. Good place for all types of events.
(4)Virgil G.
My favorite Mexican Restaurant for their food. The Tamales are perfect.
(4)Gabby B.
El Torazo is, by far, our favorite Mexican restaurant in Louisville. The staff is great, the food is even better and the 2 for 1 margaritas every night is a win, win for all!
(5)Lucas B.
One of my favorite places to eat. Very good food with a unique flavor not found any place else. It's different which I like. One of the highlights is the excellent service. Always attentive and extremely friendly. They actually seem to like work there and it creates a pleasant atmosphere.
(5)Allan K.
I always expect to be disappointed by going for Mexican food in places that aren't home (Southern California) but this place was alright. I can't really complain for steak/chicken fajitas for around $10. The beans/rice weren't so hot, but the fajitas were decent. Pretty attentive service always offering to top off our drinks too.
(3)Stacie D.
When I found this restaurant early in 2009 I was skeptical because it wasn't in a great location and I just wasn't sure what to expect. But.....enter the door and be greated with a warm smile and immediately be seated. It doesn't matter what server you get because they are all very courteous and professional. Within minutes of being seated you are provided warm chips and the best cilantro salsa in the city. They also have hot if you dare. I took a chance and ordered the guacamole. Good grief! It was the freshest, tastiest, greenest guacamole I have ever had. And it's only around $2.75 for a half order. I also highly recommend the chicken chimichanga. Tasty, fresh and not greasy at all. The prices are completely affordable. Go dine there soon.
(5)Alan J.
Great for lunch. Quick and affordable. Tacos de carne asada. Staff quick and attentive.
(5)Brian T.
Try the Cheese Dip! It's like crack! It has a flavor of buttered popcorn. All the food was extremely good too!
(5)Doug R.
One of the better Mexican restaurants in town. Service is always fast and professional and the food is great, from the queso dip we order with our chips to the Burrito Especial plate that I favor. Portion are quite generous for the price too.
(5)Heath M.
Outstanding food and service. These guys know how to do it. Steak Fajitas are the best
(5)Rachel A.
¡Ven aquà para comida bien rica! Come here for awesome food! Came here for lunch with my bestie and my hubby and had a five star experience. The servers are all very cheery, polite, and attentive. Even answered some of my Spanish grammar questions. Yup, I'm dork. Anyway, the food was excellent and cheap. If you like spicy, ask for the salsa picante. I doused everything in it and it was on fi-yah! Loved it. Even before my salsa, the flavour was great; I'm just addicted to hot sauce. Try the yummy margarita and cheesecake chimichanga with icecream. Nope, I'm still not hungry for dinner. Don't judge my gluttony! :op
(5)Jason S.
Good salsa. Friendly service. My wife had the taco salad, good fresh lettuce, lots of goodies. Guacamole was freshly made and tasty. We had a good experience that if we are in the area again we know is a safe option. Funny story - some drunk guys walked in wondering about the karaoke night. Apparently one of the places in the complex does karaoke but the greeter didn't understand what they were asking. (in retrospect, probably only funny if you were there, sorry)

This review might come off as snobby and critical, but I hold high standards for any place that I am spending money at if it is not classified as a dive, diner or drive-in, or does not have a drive-through ordering system, or if it is not in an airport or food court. It's your typical three-sauces-fits-all, the beef in the tacos is the same beef in the enchiladas is the same beef in the burritos Americanized Mexican restaurant where people claim "my wife's best friend's cousin's ex-roommate's sister's childhood babysitter's gardener grew up in Mexico for 3 years and this place is authentic". Yeah...well...there is nothing Mexican about chimichangas, nachos or fajitas, bubbo. Is the food here edible? Yes. Is the service decent? Depends. Is the place stupendous overall? Far from it. Is the menu reasonable? Sure...why not. Here's the thing...if you're going to have a group outing after work for drinks, this is NOT (and I will repeat NOT) the place. If you want a cheap, somewhat decent and fast lunch, this is your place. So, there you have it. Probably my shortest and most to-the-point review...ever. :-)

A friend of a friend had said that this place was pretty good, so we gave it a shot. I'd have to say it was pretty good, and it was nice that the menu had more variety and specialty dishes that we haven't seen at other restaurants. I started with a red, sweet sangria. It was actually a little stronger than at other places, but I still liked it! :) We ordered the Fajita Mocajete, Banderillas, and an Enchilada with a Chalupa. The fajita came out in a huge, sizzling bowl with beef, chicken, and shrimp with even a piece of cooked cactus in it! It was the fanciest fajita dish I've ever ordered, and it was definitely worth it's price- might as well have been 2 meals for me. The Banderillas came on metal skewers with had soft meat and veggies. It had a kick of flavor and was filling for a guy who can eat a ton! My friend enjoyed the enchilada, but he was surprised by what a chalupa was- not that it was bad, just not what he was expecting. We would all definitely come back here though!

Seriously this place is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Louisville. I order carry out a couple of times a month and my order is always the same - chicken fajitas with a side of cheese dip. The chicken is great - clearly pieces of sliced white meat chicken and seasoned perfectly. There are no weird squiggly mystery meat pieces that you see from other Mexican restaurants. The vegetables are fresh and still al dente - not too hard but not cooked to mush. The salsa is fresh and chunky and the cheese dip is rich and lovely. I can't speak to the table service but everyone I've encountered at El Torazo had been lovely. Definitely a place to check out!

I rolled into Louisville on a Thursday evening to spend some time with friends that lived there. They instructed me to meet at El Torazo and gave me directions. I figured since I hadn't eaten dinner yet, that was a perfect arrangement. They had already eaten and were enjoying some drinks, but I grabbed a menu and was really impressed. Anything you'd want to order, and prices were quite reasonable. That was just the start. I ordered a beer and an enchilada plate. In no time, my food arrive and OH MY! The portions were fantastic - I wasn't sure I'd be able to finish it all. Then I tasted it. OH MY! There aren't enough o's in gooooood to describe the flavor. They didn't over-do the cilantro like many places do - no, this was a great balance between the ingredients and seasoning. This place blew away my favorite Mexican food back home, which is saying a lot. The atmosphere is colorful and welcoming as you'd expect. The staff there were wonderful and ready to help me with whatever I needed. I look forward to the next time I'm Louisville - I know where I'll have (at least) one of my meals!

chips are not the best, Salsa fair not runny like some places, you can actually taste the tomato instead of being spiced to death, What is great at this restaurant is the main dishes. The chicken is always cooked and spiced to perfection, the rice is also done well along with the refried beans!! If they changed the chips and tweaked the salsa it would be much better. The service is Excellent!! Great attitude by all who work at this location!! Have noticed some people working with computers at busy times here!! Workers rely on tips and your not doing them any favors by wasting space after you are done eating when it is busy get movin!!!
(3)Tom R.
Went here for lunch and was thoroughly impressed! *Very* friendly staff. Pleasant surroundings. I ordered the carnitas, which was slow-cooked pork. It was *amazing* -- so tender and tasty! The house-made fresh guacamole was creamy, cool, and mild. The house-made hot sauce was very unusual and like nothing I've had before. It was an odd sort of pinkish-brown color, and very tasty. Plenty spicy but not unbearable. House-made tortilla chips were thin, crispy, and fresh. Is is "authentic" Mexican food? Don't know. Don't care. It's excellent food, whatever you want to call it. Go!

I am not one to hand out five stars to restaurants or any business for that matter unless they have truly earned it. El Torazo has truly earned this rating. From the location, the interior, the management and wait staff, to the ambience, the cleanliness of the restaurant and the restroom, the drink menu and especially the food - this place is a gem! The chips and salsa are always fresh and oh so yummy! My favorite items are the Huevos Con Chorizo (scrambled eggs with Mexican spicy sausage) served with beans and rice and the Fajita Nachos (Chicken and Steak nachos) I add lettuce, tomato and queso to mine! Get a size of guacamole and queso and you won't know what to do with yourself. Lastly if you are not on the clock please get a top shelf Margarita - My favorite is peach! I have been coming here for years because they have never compromised on quality! Ruffina usually waits on me and I have never had a problem here. Please let me know what you think!
(5)Zachary H.
I've been here twice on Sunday nights when they have happy hour and both times I got the Carnitas and it is damn good. They are basically tacos you make yourself using soft corn tortillas they bring on the side along with a little picco salsa cilantro stuff on the side. Not sure if there is lime in it as well, but it's definitely closer to what one would think of as traditional Mexican tacos. The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because the rice that comes with it was a bit funky. I don't even really care about the rice and beans that much tho to be honest.
(4)Whitney R.
Horrible! I ordered fajita nachos with steak + I added shrimp to go. The total came to 18 bucks which I thought was expensive but I was really hungry. The food was absolutely nasty and it was cold. I went to take it back and the woman working the front was extremely rude and kept snarling at me. The manager told me he could not refund my food because I ordered it with shrimp (??) and they used a lot of to go containers (??). Not sure what that had to do with me returning my food. Either way, they offered to remake it which I initially agreed but decided I didn't want to eat their food and I left. Needless to say, due to the bad food and rude customer service I won't be going back.

I just happened upon this place one night while traveling to Louisville. It's located in a strip mall, but once inside has a very distinct Mexican atmosphere to it. The chips and salsa were very fresh, and I ordered the chicken enchiladas as an entree. The chicken was obviously slow cooked for a long time because it was delicious and I ate all three enchiladas, when I had mentally told myself I would have only two. That should say something. The service was great, the food was great. I can't understand the negative review, because every plate I saw was near perfect in presentation. Anyway, give this place a try...it's definitely worth it!
(5)Lax M.
We had shrimp quesadilla ... And margarita was 2for 1! Couldn't get better
(5)Travis M.
This is like my 20th time here and the experiences have all been great! Great service, great food and atmosphere. Family friendly and they offer free chips and salsa. This trip I got the fajita steak nachos very good, very filling was the only thing I ate was under $10 worth every penny. One thing I really like is the service is fast not fast food fast but you never wonder where your food is. This place is a real gem in the hurstbourne area.
(5)Emily C.
My favorite Mexican restaurant in town. They have the best salsa! It's fresh and you can see and taste it. Chips are always hot and everything I get is always delicious. I love their little patio outside in the summer to drink margaritas and eat tacos with carne asada. I take everyone here when they want good Mexican food.
(5)Ryson W.
Nice little Mexican restaurant. Food is good, nothing fancy. Staff was great, service was great. I had a chicken chimichanga, taco, beans, rice. Standard Mexican fare. It was nice and warm inside. Thursday nights are 2 for 1 margaritas.
(4)Marietta R.
The nicest people you could ever meet! Stayed open late for us and everything was delicious. Yelp has it makes wrong, it is right by Shoe Carnival,Office Depot, Enterprise strip center!
(5)Lynn D.
We initially loved this place for the salsa, but after going there five times (and every time feeling unwelcomed, we are saying adios to the place). For the price, the portions are smaller than other Mexican restaurants in the area.
(3)Chris W.
Good Mexican restaurant, and would recommend it. My 1st visit and I would definitely go back. Louisville not easy to find good mexican, this is 1 of the better if not best Mexican restaurants I have dined at in Louisville. Service was good, food was good, and atmosphere was very good. Only catch was difficulty in finding it. It sits in the far back of a shopping complex in which Shoe Carnival is also located, I would use Shoe Carnival as your landmark to GPS to find it.
(4)Anne O.
My family tried this restaurant while we were visiting Louisville last week. Overall we liked it, but there are a couple of things I wanted to mention. Apparently the restaurant always runs a "two for one" on margaritas and some beers. We didn't see the sign on our way in, so we were quite surprised when the server plopped down 2 margaritas in front of me and presented my husband with a 24 ounce beer. It would've been nice if she had mentioned it when we ordered, since we didn't really want 2 drinks. so the service was a little off there. Also, I ordered chicken mole, and while the mole sauce was mouthwateringly delicious, the chicken was very stringy and dry. so was my husband's. The mole sauce almost made up for it, but still, I'm not sure I would order that again.
(3)Ernie S.
As a San Diegan, I was a little suspicious that the previous five star ratings for this place were done only by Kentuckians (those from KY, don't take this hard, you know a lot about horses and bourbon and basketball, but not quite as much about mexican food). My girlfriend and I walked in and saw that the place was packed on a Saturday night. We both appreciated the family vibe and the bright decor. I asked the waiter if they had horchata and he said yes and brought me the largest one I've had for 2 bucks (and it was REALLY delicious). The horchata is as good as california horchata. Onto the food...My "pregnant burrito" was a mixture of a lot of different meats and was more than solid. My girlfriend ordered the steak and chicken fajitas and thought they were great-- plentiful meat, authentic beans, and zesty guac. The chips and salsa were also a plus. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. I think this place could survive in california, which is a hell of a compliment and more than I can say about most Mexican food restaurants in the south and midwest.

We had shrimp quesadilla ... And margarita was 2for 1! Couldn't get better

Nice little Mexican restaurant. Food is good, nothing fancy. Staff was great, service was great. I had a chicken chimichanga, taco, beans, rice. Standard Mexican fare. It was nice and warm inside. Thursday nights are 2 for 1 margaritas.

The nicest people you could ever meet! Stayed open late for us and everything was delicious. Yelp has it makes wrong, it is right by Shoe Carnival,Office Depot, Enterprise strip center!

We initially loved this place for the salsa, but after going there five times (and every time feeling unwelcomed, we are saying adios to the place). For the price, the portions are smaller than other Mexican restaurants in the area.

My favorite Mexican Restaurant for their food. The Tamales are perfect.

El Torazo is, by far, our favorite Mexican restaurant in Louisville. The staff is great, the food is even better and the 2 for 1 margaritas every night is a win, win for all!

One of my favorite places to eat. Very good food with a unique flavor not found any place else. It's different which I like. One of the highlights is the excellent service. Always attentive and extremely friendly. They actually seem to like work there and it creates a pleasant atmosphere.

Great for lunch. Quick and affordable. Tacos de carne asada. Staff quick and attentive.
