We were driving from chcago to nashville and somewhere around lunch time my wife and I had this sudden urge to eat mexican. Nothing else but mexican. And when you are on interstates in mid america, mexican is hard to find right. So we , take an exit to fill gas and eat in mcdonalds..again and what do i see. A big yellow board with El Nopal. So now I know we can get mexican. It may be bad, but at least its mexican like. So we go here and the place is lively, a full bar, lots of lunch specials, the rates looks very reasonable when I compare with Nashville. We ordered two different chicken steaks. The toppings on my steak had jalapenos, chillis, musrooms, onins and it was great. This was really good compared to the cheese topping I get to eat sometimes in Nashville. Before El-Nopal, Fogatas was my fav mexican which is in Nashville but its El-Nopal now. Unfortunately, El Nopal is in IN and KY only. They have good offers on booze too. You can get a 32 oz beer for 3 bucks and what more do u need driving on an interstate. You can get cheap margaritas. So good food and booze at a reasonable rate in a lively environment on an interstate exit. Come on you must be kidding me. Unfortunately, I could not find the correct location for the restaurant on the exit so I am writing it here. Its a chain restaurant.

My wife and I eat here as often as our budget allows. It's the best Mexican food we've eaten in Louisville and for unbeatable prices.

It's been a while since I lived in Louisville or ate at El Nopal, but I found this little fantastic place by word-of-mouth. A good friend of mine highly recommended it, but I was a little skeptical at the outward appearance of the place. It literally looks like a hole in the wall when you pull up to it. But don't be deceived by appearances! The food here is outstanding. One of my favorite menu features is the queso cheese dip. Also, sometimes, if you catch it on a Friday night, there's live music by a local mariachi band. The place has atmosphere, quick service, and tasty Mexican food. Yum!

We ate at the el nopal on taylorsville road on Sunday, 9/3/11. Normally it is ok but this time was terrible. The chips tasted bad. They were obviously fried in very old oil. When we were showing this to the manager, we noticed a hair in the chips. This was enough to ruin the visit. The manager may have been sorry but because of a lack of English he could not express it. I will not be returning there.

Authentic Mexican. My meal was a little bland for my tastes.

We decided to try this place out after seeing the reviews. We were getting tired of the place by our house that we've been going to for years. I was not impressed with El Nopal. First off, 2 of our 4 orders were completely wrong. The waitress even realized this when she looked at what she wrote down. So I don't know if it was her fault or the cook's. Second, they had live music going on that was very loud, making it difficult to talk to others at the table. Third, the booths were too small for 4 people. I had fajitas and took up almost the entire side of the table, leaving no room for my dad's food. Fourth, the website advertises Thursday dinner fajitas for $9.50. They charged us $13.25. When we asked her about this, the cashier said that it was no longer valid. Well they need to take it off their website then. I contacted the manager about these issues and here was his response: "Hi Andrew, I will like to apologize for your bad experience, the order taking errors will be fixed ASAP. As for the fajita special it is $9.50 for all locations all day on Thursday." So he acknowledges that we should not have been charged full price for the fajitas but does not offer to make up for it. Not sure how the order taking errors will be fixed.

I always get the El Grande chicken burrito or fajita. This time I went with the burrito. It was really good. The guacamole was also good. Their salsa taste like tomato sauce. They need to add cilantro and peppers. I also got the queso. It also needs something to flavor it. It was good but could use a little spicing up. Over all a good meal. We got carry out and everything was fresh and hot.

First I must clarify: we were in a group and that may have accounted for the service we received. The food was good, not super authentic but still pretty good. The salsa is kind of blah, but the chips are very good. The service was lack luster and the checks were not split up and the server told us to go split it up at the register. I'm pretty sure I got ripped off and charged for the wrong things and the people were very rude and rushing us along. Won't go back.

My husband and I love this restaurant and the multiple locations in Louisville. We highly recommend the chimichunga and $1.99 margaritas (Monday/wednesday). The entrance to this location is super confusing and is actually at the back of the strip mall so don't be confused when your GPS gets confused :)

A decent, locally owned Mexican restaurant operated by local folks. Can't say this seems too fancy or particularly spicy. I do appreciate that everyone gets their own bowl for salsa in case they want to spice it up with hot sauce or double dip. But it is cheap and they give pretty big portions, so it's got that going for it. I definitely recommend the steak quesadilla... It's well prepared, enormous, and features well-grilled strips of delicious marinated steak and onion, peppers. It doesn't come with rice and beans, but honestly, you aren't missing much here.

It was good, but not great. I was craving tacos but they don't have just tacos on the menu. They are served with the combo plates. I got the plate with one beef enchilada, on beef burrito, and a chile relleno. I have to say I really liked the chile relleno. Also, I was disappointed that they don't serve horchada. It's getting hard these days to find Mexican restaurants that do serve it. It's so yummy.

Really good, basic Mexican restaurant. They have flautas, which are one of my favorite dishes. The amount of food you get is pretty big so sometimes we get more than one meal out of it, which is nice! The staff here are really sweet and I love that it's in our neighborhood.

I typically go to this location or Eastern Parkway, but have been to almost two dozen of the many El Nopal locations. The quality of the food has gotten much better at this location, recently, as well as the friendliness of the staff. This is one of the few locations with a patio, which is great for sitting outside in the summer to have margaritas with friends. Even better, that patio is semi-covered, so even in a light rain it's possible to stay outside. The set up for the bar is better than most locations, as it is tucked away to the left of the entrance with ample televisions for games.

Really good! Service was excellent and food was great, restaurant was clean. I had taquitos and they were really good. The meat was moist, not dried out like a lot of them are. Oh I had a margarita on the rocks that was also really good. My dad had a #7, which was an enchilada and chili relleno. This is one of his favorites for Mexican and he really enjoyed it. We'll be back for sure.

Best Mexican food in Louisville I could find in my five years there. The margaritas are very good and try the mole (Mo-Lay) or the chicken and chorizo is very good, but heavy be prepared! Nice casual ambiance and the staff were always nice to me.

Really enjoyed this place. I spent Cinco de Mayo here on a recent trip to Louisville. I had the mixed fajitas which were great. The margaritas were strong and the home chips and salsa was awesome. The place was really big and had no wait to be seated.

Love the carnitas! This place is great if you love Mexican. I would not say its the best in town but I like this local chain more than the others. The los yolandas is also fantastic. I have not had a bad meal here, but some are better than others. The tacos are always good too.

It is good and the lunch prices are great, especially for the amount of food you get. It isn't my go-to place for "real" Mexican, but I can't complain about the quality of the good. The shredded chicken and shredded beef that are in a lot of the items are both juicy and flavorful. And they are willing to sub items, like beans instead of rice, even on their super cheap daily lunch special ($3.99!) I'm pretty sure I've had a least 5 bowls of the tortilla soup this month between this location and La Grange. Service is friendly and fast, even before we became regulars. We when got a server on his first day, he worked extra hard and the friendly manager helped him out and checked up on things (unobtrusively). Good for workday lunches when you have a limited time frame.

This is a chain so I do not like to comment specifically on most chains. I do however comment on location and staff and this location is always clean and the staff is very friendly. Very good authintic food.

One of my top "go to" places in the neighborhood. It's nice to have a place that you are a regular. They always give me a handshake when I come in and top service. The food is always top notch and David has to be one of the best waiters in Louisville. Superb all around.

El Nopal is one of my favorite Mexican sit-down eateries. A friend and I often designate the Friday at the end of a hard week to Margaritas and a meal begun with El Nopal's addicting queso blanco dip. Service is prompt and accurate, and food arrives at the perfect temperature. I would highly recommend them, even if just for the alcoholic beverages and cheese dip appetizer :)

I read all the reviews of local Mexican joints and this came at number 1 or 2. I did not like it. Very plain Jane with no spice or special flavor to set it apart the ground beef was flavorless and for the price that was the deal killer sorry I gave it a shot and my honest feedback. It's a very safe Mexican style food. Try it and see for yourself. Slow service very cold ac unit blowing on you and my plate was cold and my partners was hot? Very strange, I know I am harsh but I am not the average customer my idea Of Mexican is different then others that are use to plain. These guys have 19 locations in ky so they must be doing it right.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
