Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Very unique in food selection and taste. They could have created a better dining experience with improved arrangement of the dining area. No habla English, so good luck on getting what you think you ordered. Special bonus tip: Try out the salsas on the table before you cover everything unless you have an mouth of stone.

Is this place a secret? If so, we need to spread the word! I've only gone during the work week for lunch and there needs to be more people going! The food is very complex and not your typical "chips and salsa Mexican". But speaking of chips and salsa- and queso- Coconut Beach does then right! Though you have to pay for them. I got the carnitas burrito and it was huge! Took some home for dinner that night. The carnitas were deliciously marinated. There are 3 different sauces that come in tubes- warning the spicy is HOT. A second time I got 3 tacos but could only eat 2 in the sitting. The carnitas are my favorite filling, but I also enjoyed the fish. Definitely worth a try for something filling during lunch!

Clean place. Awesome staff. I wouldn't have a problem eating here in the future, but I doubt I'll go back. Being from the owners of El Taco Luchador & Mussel Burger Bar, I expected so much more. Don't get me wrong, Coconut Beach Tacos & Cerveza has everything that El Taco Luchador has with a few other menu additions. The tacos that I ordered tasted fine (2 Pollo Adobo & 2 Al Pastor). My only complaint is that it seemed like they made them at Luchador & then shuttled them over to us. They weren't as fresh as they've been each & every time at Luchador. It was the same result with the Mole fries. Tasty, but not the freshest. Before this turns into a comparison review, I will touch on the burrito that my lady ordered. It was good. I know this because when she says that she's full and continues to eat until the food is finished then I know it must be good! We went on a Wednesday evening. There were only 4-5 other tables with people in this extra large place. I expected the food to be much fresher than what it was. I hear that this place is packed on Friday/Saturdays... especially during football season. If the freshness isn't there with 4-5 tables, I fear that fresh food probably isn't much better with a packed house. When I'm craving tacos, El Taco Luchador always pops into my head. When this was the case yesterday, I thought to myself, "Why not go try their other place?" Ultimately, the place is good enough to justify the price, but in the future I'll skip this place & head on to El Taco Luchador.

Never had any quesadillas like this! Cheese quesadillas on bottom, then chicken on top with salad on top. Presentation was impressive, portions were large and taste was incredible. Muy Bueno!

I ate here yesterday for lunch. talk about a hidden gem! Probably some of the best authentic Mexican food I have had. Located right across from Cardinal Stadium, they have a prime location to be a local mainstay. I had the barbacoa and carnitas tacos (fresh made at only $2.45 each) and they were amazing. Their food is great and affordable, perfect for the college crowd. Also, their sauces are made in-house (be warned, the habnero is the real deal.) They are owned be the same family as Taco Luchador, so you know you are getting a quality product. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant in the Southend.

Coconut Beach Tacos & Cerveza is the best of El Taco Luchador, which is under the same ownership, with some other new favorites mixed in. This hit me when I was deep into my enjoyment of an al pastor (pork) taco. I had had this delicious taco before, I thought. And a quick comparison of the two restaurants' menus shows that CBT&C has many tacos and tortas that look similar to ETL's, plus other specials, appetizers, soups and burritos that are their own. But considering how great ETL is -- and really how great all of the restaurants that are operated by the Martinez family are -- this is more than A-OK in my book. Who wouldn't want to have more of their greatness around town? (That was a hypothetical question, but still, the answer is a resounding, "Not me!" The more Martinez restos, the better!) So for my first visit to CBT&C, we started with the maduros, which are plantains topped with crema, queso and cilantro (also a favorite at ETL). And these were as good as I remembered them from ETL. The savoriness of the crema and queso pairing was a good match for the sweetness of the soft, warm plantains, making it more than a one-note appetizer. For my tacos, I got the barbacoa, al pastor and baja fish, with the fish being my favorite. I loved having that crunch of the beer batter within the taco, and the fish was tender and cooked well. All in all, the tacos at CBT&C as well as at ETL have a nice balance of protein to cheese to other add-ins. They are never over stuffed, yet three usually fill me up for a meal. Our server was helpful when it came to describing the menu and giving his favorites, and the meal was very affordable at $2 per taco, which is cheaper that ETL. Tacos there range from $2.50 to $3.25 each. The location and decor is a bit strange, I grant you. It's in the old Tailgaters spot, directly next to Papa John's Stadium. Both I and my lunch companion remarked that we worried the place was closed because there were no other cars in the parking lot when we arrived just before noon. It was open, though. I just hope more people frequent this spot to help it stay open, since it isn't in a high traffic area, except on game days. All in all, this was a great lunch. I feel like CBT&C would be a good place to show off your foodie prowess to out-of-towners, given its out-of-the-way locale and great food. P.S. I'm saving my last star for a return trip, in which I try some of the items CBT&C alone makes, like the Sincronizadas Mexicanas (a quesadilla with a strange name) or carne asada burrito. Yum!

Fresh! fresh! fresh! Number one word to describe this restaurant by far. I ordered 3 tacos (forget which ones, sorry) and they were awesome! Perhaps the best chips and queso combo I have ever eaten as well. Prices are very reasonable. They bring out 3 different sauce combinations to put on the tacos, all of which had dates on them. I had to verify that the dates actually meant they replaced the sauces on a regular basis (weekly was what I was told) and you can definitely tell. I don't think I have ever been to a taco joint where the sauce was not crusted on the tip of the bottles until now. I will definitely be coming back to this location and I highly recommend to anyone who loves good food. Great margarita and beer specials as well.

YUM!!! Coconut Beach Tacos & Cerveza has quickly become my favorite Mexican restaurant in town, and I sincerely hope it will become a fast favorite for others! This restaurant is located in the old Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill, of which I was never a fan. However, this is completely different. The menu offers $2 tacos like you find at sister restaurant El Taco Luchador. I mix up my order every time, because they're all my favorites! There are a number of your other favorite Mexican foods as well; the carne asada was delicious, but literally everything my friends and I have ordered has been delicious. A number of their items have a unique spin. For example, the salsa served with chips is house made and not like one I have had elsewhere in Louisville. If I could suggest one thing you MUST try (if you like plantains), it is the maduros. AMAZING. Seriously. I love them. The space is large with large booths and a bar with plenty of seating (and other tables in between), and they have a private parking lot surrounding the building. The staff is friendly; the bartender remembered me (and where I work!) from one visit to the next. They're also fairly quick, which is great, because you don't want to wait long for this food. I believe on weekends this space is also a nightclub for salsa dancing, though I am not totally certain on that. Also, for updates on hours, etc., like them on Facebook (ex. They recently posted "winter" hours.). Then, whether you are nearby at UofL or far away across town, rush in to have a delicious and inexpensive meal.

My hopes were high for this local joint. Perhaps it was the time of day I came in, but staff were off their game and the food was lackluster (and I was HUNGRY!). When I arrived at 2:30, staff were at the bar eating and laughing together. That wasn't a problem but the amount of time it took to be noticed and seated was rather silly. The place was dead. Either the server lingered too often and too long or he disappeared. Sometimes the music turned off. There were people coming in and gathering laundry and floor mats. It would have been cool to do it away from my table. It felt distinctly like I was there during closing/opening. Unfortunately, the sandwich lacked much flavor and needed salt. I've been waiting to ask for salt and the pickled jalapeños for about 20min but I'm ready to take this to go. For those ordering the chicken sandwich, there is not much protein (if that's what you are hoping for). I'm sticking to taco luchador for now. Maybe I'll come back in the evening when this place is more lively.

Stopped in for lunch. Chicken tacos and fajitas were great. Fresh grilled veggies and salad for fajitas, sauces with lots of favor, a little heat. Service was great and place was clean. Definitely will try again when in town.

Holy moly. My parents are I came here for a quick workday lunch and, in one visit, this has become my new favorite Mexican place in town! We were seated immediately and were given chips and salsa. You could tell that both were homemade and the salsa had such a different and yummy flavor. On the advice of fellow Yelpers, we ordered some Maduros. My dad wasn't a fan but my mom and I both thought they were delicious and different (my dad's a weirdo - who doesn't like plantains?!) I ordered the Chicharrones taco and the Baja fish taco. They were both delicious but my favorite was the fish - it was set off perfectly with a nice amount of slaw. I put a little verde sauce on there and my tastebuds were sated! My mom had the burrito and my dad had the chicken torta - they both loved their entrees. The best part? Our entire meal was $27.00. That is unbelievable for the quality of food! Stop reading my review. Go. Go now!

I think I'm going to have to give this place another try. I love all the owner's other restaurants, but I was not super happy with my first trip here. The food tasted fine, but I'm not wild about corn tortillas for the tacos. That's a personal preference and not something I'll lower my review for. My issue was more the slow and/or lack of service. It took a while for anyone to acknowledge I was waiting for a table. Furthermore, once we got served, our waiter never refilled drinks and we didn't see him again until we asked for the checks. The place wasn't particularly busy either. So, I'd just have to say it was a little disappointing. Perhaps it was an off day or they were short staffed. Who knows? I'll make the rounds again in the future and update my review accordingly. To summarize: okay food, poor service.
(3)Joseph T.
Well this place is gross. I mean, it's clean. The service is fine. But the food actually tasted awful. The fish taco stank. Not a normal fish smell. But like someone put a terrible season and batter on it. Gross. And it didn't taste very nice. The chicken burrito was the same. Really bad flavor. I don't know what they had going on there. I didn't care for it. Ate maybe half of it. The black beans looked like someone took cat poop and baby poop, mixed it together, and served it. And it didn't taste much different. The rice was the best thing they had. It was just plain, white rice. I won't be back. Nasty. Besides, it right next to UofL's football stadium. I should have known better than to go over there.

I honestly think this might be one of the best Mexican joints in town. Its close to my office so we have eaten here quite a few times. I have had the fish tacos and the burritos and have yet to have a bad experience. I especially love when they bring out the three sauces w chips. The price is reasonable, especially for the size of the servings. The thing I don't get is that its never been crowded. They need to do a better job of marketing themselves -- way too many other options -- mostly cookie-cutter options -- that will drive them out of business. Its directly across from PJ Cardinal Stadium, so I imagine they are really crowded... 6 days a year. I highly recommend!

I love Mexican food. All types. I was told about this place from a friend and he made it sound so good that I just had to try it for myself! My hubby and I went for dinner on a Saturday night at around 7 and they were pretty dead which was great for getting seated right away but I hope not a bad sign for the business. Our server Jorge was very friendly and offered to help us with menu suggestions. He recommended their Mojitos and I took the suggestion even though I normally would have gone with a margarita. It proved to be a good recommendation! They were really tasty and complimented the food nicely. We decided to start with the chips and queso appetizer which was good but very similar to queso I've had many times before at lots of other locations. We each also ordered three tacos and I particularly liked that you can mix and match them! I had the Baja Fish, Al Pastor, and the Barbacoa. The Barbacoa which is a seasoned shredded beef was my favorite with the fish a close second. The Al Pastor had great flavor but the pork was tough. I really liked the three creamy hot sauces that they bring to the table. I tried all three because I love anything spicy and they were all very good (and hot!) but I enjoyed the flavor of the Arbol the most. I do wish that they still had a per taco price like it appears they used to based on the yelp pictures. Now the menu reads 3 tacos for $9. I definitely think I could have eaten a fourth taco (and there were certainly more I wanted to try) and I known hubby could have eaten more than three! Anyway we really enjoyed the food and drinks and we will absolutely be back again!

I think I found a new place to eat while on campus! I can get off the shuttle stop by the stadium and just walk over. One of the reason why I love going to Game's is because of their corn but waiting 45 minutes gets a little ridiculous sometime....but now..I can just get it at here! without waiting :) It taste just as good and probably even better here. Tacos! Fish tacos to be exact. Add some of the spice and squeeze lime on top.. Nooooom. The lady exaggerated how spicy the habanero sauce was....don't get me wrong.. It's spicy but I was expecting worse. Oh and don't forget to go up and pay... Or else you'll just be sitting there :) I'm really glad I gave this place a chance because I've always thought it was just some college bar place.
(4)Michael D.
Had the carne asada tacos, and they were the best I've had in a long long time. Friendly staff. Great home made salsa selection.
(4)Kate M.
Delicious and reasonably priced. I recommend the shrimp cevice as an app and the tortas are excellent. If your in the mood for authentic Mexican, check it out!
(4)Emily W.
Excellent place if you're looking for some good Mexican food! My husband and I came here on a Friday night as I'd read good things about it on Yelp. The meal started with complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was really different, but really good! We also started with an order of empanadas which were good, but I probably would have skipped them if I knew the chips and salsa were coming. The food was fairly quick...I had the fried pork carnitas and they really did melt in your mouth. He had the nachos and was really happy with his order. But believe your waiter when they warn you about the spicy sauce they bring out--it's REALLY spicy. Our meal came to around $26, and that included two beers that were on special, so good price. The service was really friendly. I just felt like the ambiance was a little weird. It seems like it would be a great place during the summer or fall during a game (since it's across from the stadium), packed wall-to-wall with people since it's got so much big, open space. But not really an intimate restaurant. I would definitely go back, but probably with a big group of friends looking to have a good time!
(4)Justin H.
After hearing some great reviews of this place, I decided to check it out with an old friend and wasn't disappointed. I had the Barbacoa and carnitas tacos along with the complementary chips. The chip salsa was a bit spicy but just how I like it. The carnitas taco was definitely my favorite but that's not to take away from the Barbacoa. The server/manager brought out 3 different types of salsa to be used on the tacos and they're all 3 great! The food was fresh, the service was stellar, and everything, bathrooms included, were super clean. All in all, I was very full by the time I left and was only out ~$12 after tipping. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!
(4)Tom G.
They have a warm (temp) salsa called tocayo. They charge for it, it is worth it. It is one of the best things I I have ever tasted! Ordered three tacos; Al Pastor (marinated pork, Asada (grilled steak) and vegetarian. The vegetarian had plantains. All were good, but the vegetarian was the best. I'm definitely a carnivore, this was just the best of the 3. My friend had the plantain side and it was delicious! The Margareta was very good too.
(5)Debby H.
I followed the reviews and decided to go for it. Had the Baja, Barbacoa, and Asada tacos - I cannot tell you which one I enjoyed more. All were great! Had to try the maduras, as per reviews, and they were the perfect dessert. Would love to have tried the flan, but not this time. I saw they had chilaquiles on the board, so I will be back tomorrow to try them - love the chilaquiles when done correctly. My only complaint was it was too cold with the air conditioning. The staff was very nice and accommodating. Big wide vast place would be great for dancing.
(4)Brandon J.
Once again, Yelp didn't steer me wrong. I stopped into this place based on the reviews and it perfectly met the mark. Started with a marg and some free chips and salsa. Both were good--nothing exceptional but they were both satisfying. After that, I dug into the tacos. This is where this place hit 5 stars for me. Coconut offers premium tacos at under $3 a pop. They're not just "good for the price," they're f*ing AWESOME! The tacos have great flavor and are well portioned. My favorite part is that they offer three sauces (the red, green, and orange bottles in pictures others have posted) and you can add a splash to enhance the flavor of your taco. I'm definitely coming back next time I'm in the area.
(5)Jewel W.
Had the vegetarian tacos and they were great! It wasn't the typical vegetable taco and they put some real thought into it.
(4)Ashley D.
Fellow Yelp Elite, Amy L. and I ate here with my dad after a recent UofL baseball game. We'd heard some good reviews and were starving after the game. Too bad the restaurant mostly struck out with our crew. When we got there the very large dining room only had one other table. Yet, it took forever for us to get any service and that theme carried on throughout our meal. I'd understand if they were really busy or looked under-staffed, but they had several employees just standing around. Our server mostly played some kind of video game and seemed uninterested in the two tables in the dining room. We did love the plantains (best part of the night)! And I'd go back again just to have those! We loved the different sauces too (especially the habanero-HOT). The tacos were tasty and very reasonably priced. The margaritas were also tasty and cheap. Overall, the experience wasn't awful, but the service needs major improvement!
(2)Meg H.
Coconut Beach Tacos & Cerveza is outstanding. First, you can't go wrong with a restaurant with the same ownership group as Mussel & Burger Bar, Guacamole, Cina, and El Luchador. Second, we were looking for a place that would give us our weekly taco fix (since Taco Punk closed) at a reasonable price. Coconut Beach is IT! I ordered 2 tacos (carnitas, al pastor), barbacoa sopas (amazing), and the tastiest carne asada burrito I have EVER eaten for less than $20. I'm hoping the odd location isn't the downfall of this place because this food NEEDS to be tasted! We've found our new weekly taco fix... and the fact that it's just down the street from my work at the University means I'll probably visit more frequently. Kudos!
(5)Sofia C.
The service was fast and very friendly! Our food was hot and tasty, will definitely be back!
(4)Deb R.
Attended the soft opening of this place ( opening to the public Tuesday, October 7th). Great Mexican food across the street from Cardinal Stadium, from the owners of GuacaMole, Mussel Burger Bar, and El Taco Luchador. Loved the Caliente Margarita ; they have other Margaritas by the pitcher too. :-) Salsa and chips were great and plentiful with a great smoky flavor. With $2 tacos, and an amazingly large Tortas ( our favorite the Cubana- stuffed with 4 different meats ) for only $6, this place is going to be huge with the UofL crowd. Best place for after ( or pre-) game days! Go Cards!
(5)Kim B.
The hubs and I first visited Coconut Beach on January 2 and have eaten there no fewer than 7 times since. It's that good, which is really no surprise since the owners also run the uber-delicious Mussel & Burger Bar, El Taco Luchador and GuacaMole. As others have mentioned, the maduros are a must-get. If you're a mole kind of guy or gal, get your burrito topped with CB's delicious sauce and you will not be disappointed. Tacos, tortas and more - it's all incredible and addictively delish. You've been warned.

Finger licking good! Thanks to Yelp and all the people who suggested this place, i was searching for a restaurant and i found this place and i found it has a positive feel right from the moment i entered the restaurant. Friendly staff, quick service and tasty food. It is a treat for foodies and it has one of the best condiments ( loved the habanero sauce, but its too spicy). I hope they maintain this for ever.
(5)Ashly B.
Love this place! Great food and very reasonable prices. Friendly staff and good service.
(5)Jennie B.
Finally! Louisville has the real deal for authentic, well-made Mexican food. Rumor has it, this restaurant was opened by the owners of Taco Luchador. You will find the same great tacos plus tortas, burritos, appetizers, sides, beer and margaritas. The guac rocks! The street corn (a side) is delicious--just like you'd find on the street in Mexico but here you can sit down on a comfortable padded bench. The mole and Baja tacos are phenomenal and the adobo pollo taco is excellent. The only thing they could add to put things over the top would be some microbrew beer on tap--lovers of Mexican beer will find a large selection on tap plus more in bottles. It is extremely clean and the staff are friendly. I'll keep coming back fo' sho'!
(5)Tom D.
Had group lunch with work crew, food was excellent, atmosphere great, I reccomend the chicharon taco
(4)Sean R.
No free chips and salsa? Come on! That was the first bad thing about this place. Second, the service was awful. The employees were just straight up rude and didn't care about their customers. You have to go up to the window to see if your food is ready. They won't serve you at your table or call your name out when it's ready. Lastly the food just sucked. Bland white rice, warm frozen beans and crappy quality meats and veggies. Waste of time, money, and calories. There's a better mexican restaurant across the bridge about a quarter of a mile away.
(1)Eddie M.
Seems authentic. Food was good Price ok Atmosphere is wide open, too open but who cares. First time I will come back when I learn to read Mexican/Spanish
(4)Leann G.
well went there at 4:00 pm with friend, it is soooo dark in there you need a flashlight, wished the friendly woman who I ran into first would have been server. Our server was not in the least happy to be there, he was very rude the entire time. I ordered the 2 for 1 margaritas, he tried to bring them both at once with ice involved, ummm no, bring me one at a time please, he may have rolled his eyes at that and he clearly did not want to be there, nor me. My friend ordered tea, he brought me one too, when I told him I did not want nor order tea, he stared at me and took it rudely, then swiped it away. Acted put out when we asked for chips and salsa, brought mild salsa first VERY SMALL bowl, then when we put him out based on his behavior yet agian for a second bowl, it was the hot, well why not ask in the first place really?!?! It took him forever to get me my magarita and there was only ONE other table in there at the time. He was so rude thru the whole thing I was in disbielf. The Magaritas were beyond weak and I may of well have just drank the ice tea that he brought that I never ordered. rude, rude, rude !! the whole time and everything we asked. Then my friend went to pay and he had the nerve to say.....dont you have change (my friend only had a 100.00 bill), they said well no if I had the change I would have paid with that, once again, the rude waiter that did not want to be there with zero people skills was once agian put out with us. Menu is ridiculous as well, you have to work to understand what the heck you are ordering, just put it in english really!! salsa tasted like canned salsa, and I will never go back. It has been my experience in many many Mexican resturants that the mexican culture goes out of their way to be very polite, very accommadating, with good food, and great atmosphere. this one has failed terribly and it is ashamed they will still get the buisness just based on being across the street from our Cardinal stadium. we all have bad days but we can not take it out on the public if in this buisness. bad experience!!
(1)C C.
Not your average Mexican restaurant. This place is fantastic, and the prices are very reasonable.
(5)Andy F.
This restaurant sucked so bad!!!! I'm from Chicago, our standards of Mexican food is very high and this was a huge disappointment.
