Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This review is just for takeout, but oh my gosh! I love this pizza! My friend and I were having a girls night and we knew we wanted pizza. I found Coals on Yelp, and thought it looked amazing... And it was! We looked at their menu, and it looked so delicious that we had to resort to printing it out and eliminating things to decide what to get. We settled on the Prospect, Waverly, and Clifton pizzas. We asked if they could do half and half on the Prospect and Clifton and they said yes! Score! The Waverly was by far our favorite. Salty and sweet with delicious crust. The prospect was my second favorite. The Strong Greek flavors were exactly what I expected, and the Clifton was great as well. I definitely recommend this place! The service was very friendly for the brief time we were there and waiting on our pizzas. Several waiters checked on us to make sure we had been helped, so I imagine the service would be good if you are dining in!

Good pizza. Not great pizza. I enjoyed. Not a lot. But enough. Walked in. Sat outside. Server took care of Cooper. Brought him water. Pet him and spoke to him. That's what I want to see. Cooper being pampered. Server gets a 5*. Ordered the Iroquois. It's a buffalo chicken pizza. Good pizza. Not a great pizza. Has onion rings on it. I enjoyed. Would have preferred a normal pizza though. Good pizza? Yes. Awesome pizza? No. Will go back. But not for a while. Pricey. Steer clear if on a budget.

I have never felt so equally giddy and made more hungry from food smells than I have when taking in Coals Artisan Pizza. The pizza smells that are in this eatery are heavenly. They should bottle it and ship it to other pizzerias because this is what those other restos likely strive to smell like. But enough with the nose and onto the tongue! After surveying Coals' Louisville-themed pizzas, we decided on the Shawnee, a relatively new addition to Coals' menu that is a white pizza with tomatoes and pesto. Plus we added prosciutto to it ... because prosciutto. It was the perfect size for two people to share. And it reminded me of a mix between Garage Bar and Mellow Mushroom pizzas -- the crust was more artisan with a bit more saltiness (yum) than a typical crust, but the toppings are very original in their groupings. Plus it had a swirl of pesto on the top like a Mellow Mushroom pizza. Another pizza that looked delicious was the Waverly (prosciutto, fig jam, Asiago, mozzarella and gorgonzola cheese, balsamic reduction and shaved Parmesan). I'll try that next time. And because we made it in time for happy hour, we got some discounted stuffed mushrooms, which have ricotta, mozzarella and mascarpone cheese in bechamel with Parmesan and oregano breadcrumbs. These came out bubbling and were ample sized for stuffed mushrooms. For dessert, we shared the tiramisu. It's hard to go wrong with tiramisu. Throughout the dinner, our server was on top of bringing us our food. I don't think we had to wait more than 10 minutes for our pizza. Coals is on the smaller side, but that also makes it cozy -- perfect for a meeting or a date. I'm very much looking forward to going back to Coals soon and trying more of their local-themed pizzas!

I'm not going to review Coals Aristan Pizza as a pizza locale in Louisville as I see it as a casual wine bar that serves wonderful pizza and other wonderful menu options. I've been here on a few occassions and have always had a good experience. My girlfriends and I usually cozy up to the bar for some wine, appetizers, and pizza, but this past weekend I went in and actually enjoyed sitting outside Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed the stuff mushrooms and the meatball marinara while my man friend had one of the pizzas. The portions are adequate, not over the top, but not limited either. I cannot get over the stuffed mushrooms. I could order more than one order myself, but social restraints typically keep me to one. The staff here are always friendly and knowledgeable. I'd recommend this place for a quick lunch or a casual evening out. You can't go wrong here.

After visiting Italy, it's really hard to find really good Italian style pizza. We heard about this place and had to try it. Great brick oven pizza that reminded us of being in Italy. You can even sit outside and outdoor dining is great when the weather is nice. The place is small so get there early or be prepared to wait. But it is worth it. Definitely going back soon!

The best pizza in Louisville? Not in my opinion. Still, Coals serves some pretty good pizza in a nice environment. Coals is an upscale pizza joint serving artisan style pizzas. The restaurant is tiny, which provides a cozy, intimate fees, but almost always guarantees some wait time. We arrived around 6:30 on a Saturday evening and waited about twenty minutes before being seated. It was just enough time to have a drink at the bar. Coals has a nice beer and cocktail menu. I had a couple old fashioned's throughout the night, which were excellent. After being seated, we started off with some flatbread as an appetizer. It was enjoyable, with just the right amount of cheese and herbs. For our meal, we split the Middletown pizza. We liked the topping combinations. The fact that the pizza is cooked in an open coal-fired oven makes the crust charred and crispy. While I enjoyed the taste of the crust, I did not like that half the pizza was crust. My favorite part of a pizza is the sauce, cheese, and toppings, not the plain bread. I guess I'm not a crust person; it just isn't satisfying to me. On our pizza, the portion of pizza to crust was about 50/50. On a few slices, I got literally three bites of pizza before I reached the crust. Another thing to keep in mind is this is a pricey pizza joint. I'm talking about $15 for a twelve inch pizza. When looking at the size of the pizzas throughout the dining room, I definitely planned on ordering two. When we saw the prices, we settled on one. Even though I had the majority of the pizza, I did not feel full or satisfied when I was finished. To me, the size of the pizza is appropriate for one person. Upon reflection, Coals is the perfect place to go for a date night. The intimate atmosphere is great for conversation, the cocktails are a must for any date, and the small pizza size will ensure that you're not overly full.

We typically get take-out from here. The Waverly pizza is so good - fig jam, yummy cheeses. It's the kind of pizza you can't get at your regular pizza joint, but the price isn't bad at all. My husband and I have been there before with friends - great place to split pizzas and salads. It is pretty open - not amazing atmosphere - but that's okay. And heck, Homemade Pie Kitchen is nearby for dessert!

We were going to go to NamNam but they were closed so I searched for something nearby. Coals came up (and we recently read an article about them being "the best" pizza in Louisville) so we decided to check them out. We came at a 3 o'clock in a Sunday so we were hoping we would miss any crowd and maybe get faster service. Unfortunately the service appears slow even during off hours. Fortunately the pizza did make up for the wait as it was outstanding. We got the Waverly as who does not love fig or fig jam on a pizza with prosciutto! They have some nice draft beer selections also. We even found a little heart shaped pepper flake that fell to the table after shaking the shaker on a slice. Good times!
(4)Thao T.
The pizza: 12 inch (8 slices) pizza for an average of $14 each. Neapolitan style pizza, all are thin crust (though the outer crust is doughy and thick). Can easily be shared between two people and enough for one fanatic pizza lover. The ingredients are fresh but all four pizzas we got were soggy at the bottom. Good but does not deserve the best pizza in town tittle. I'd give this a skip and check out other pizza venues in town. It is a nice place for a date or special occasion. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and the staff are friendly.
(3)Colton W.
One of the best pizza places in Louisville at the moment. Food is just fantastic if your a fan of the thin crust variety. Great beer selection and complete bar. Service was attentaive and swift. Couldn't has asked for a better experience,

Thrilled with this find for our Friday night! My husband and I recently moved to the St. Matthews area and we're looking for a pizza place similar to one we enjoyed back in Indy; good beer, unique pizza, relaxing atmosphere. We found it! The craft beer selection was great and the seasonal beers made it even better. For dinner we had the wedge salad, which was plenty for us to share, and the Iroquois pizza. The pizza was fantastic! That Parmesan ranch really made it unique! The location is also fantastic and was surprisingly not busy for a Friday night. For everything that we got: salad, pizza, and 5 beers, it was under $50! That's a steal for this quality! We will definitely be back!
(5)Diane R.
Pizza crust was really good as far as flavor goes. The middle was really soggy though. The salad was good and fresh. I can not give a good review because of service. We sat for around 20 minutes before we even had our drink orders taken. We ordered our food at the same time. Had to ask for pepper flakes and cheese. Also had to flag waiter down for refills. Took forever to get the bill too. Most people have already came and gone and they kept clearing the tables but took forever to bring the bill. Please hire more waiters! Worse service ever.
(3)Amber B.
I thoroughly enjoy pizza, and Coals did not disappoint. The reason I am not committing to giving Coals five stars is simply because the pizzas are slightly overpriced and greasy. Don't get me wrong, I do not mind throwing a few extra dollars out there for a good slice of pizza, therefore I do not mind but I know some do. The greasiness is a slightly bigger issue because it causes the middle of the pizza to be soggy. But not to the point where it is gross, just not as crisp as the crust which is always my favorite part. I always get the lunch special with the pizza and soup and I get the tomato soup and the croutons are the best part. They're homemade and oh so delicious. I once tried a "soup of the day" that happened to be artichoke soup, which may not sound appealing to some, but it was absolutely delicious and I have been patiently waiting for Coals to bring it back.

You absolutely cannot find a better pizza place than this in Louisville, and I use the term "pizza place" loosely. Coal's has an exquisite decor and ambiance that is only found in fine eateries. Small, extrememly friendly, very knowledgeable staff. I admire that is always the same folks when I go back. Low turnover rate with staff so I feel like I can sit down have a drink and talk because I know they will remember me the next time I come back. The appetizers are amazing. The oven cooked wings and meatballs will surprise your taste buds. The best pizza in my opinion would have to be the Indian Hills. WIth the ham, sopressata and Nueske's applewood bacon with fresh mozzarella, basil, marinara and shaved Parmesan... it is to die for. They have an extensive wine and liquor selection as hell. A favorite of mine is the Basil Hayden.
(5)Steve S.
Nice spot, a bit tough to find from the airport area, but worth the trip. Great pizza and the Caesar salad with tempura anchovy is one of the best I've ever had. I only wish they would turn down the brightness of the lighting just a bit to give it a better feel. Good service (except for one waitress that felt compelled to linger behind the bar like she was bored out of her mind and hold menus under her armpit!!! Nasty - my # one complaint about restaurants - waiters/waitresses please do NOT put menus under your armpits!). Great pizza, excellent service, I'll go back!
(4)Julie M.
I mean, come on, if you want some pretty awesome Neopolitan style 'za, this is the place to try. Arancini (a traditional Italian rice ball) is a bit unusual with the addition of bacon, but I am never one to complain about bacon in anything. I sampled two pizzas which were great and of course they aren't listed on the website so I cant describe them. I think one was called the "Butchertown" because it was all meat, and another had a white sauce and figs or something like that. Both excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. Wish they would make another location in Nulu or the Highlands though.
(4)Jesse N.
We had the stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer which was very delicious (baked, not fried). Then we each had a pizza - she had the Waverly pie (which was a very delicious sweet and savory pizza) and I had the Bucthertown pie (meatballs, bacon, all about the meat). The crust was light and didn't feel really heavy on the guts and our server was awesome. The beer list was not the biggest but definitely decent. Looking forward to coming here again.
(5)Mark C.
Tried the Bardstown and Crescent Hill. Both were fantastic. The Bardstown mixed salty crunchy bacon and ham with sweet pineapple. The Crescent Hill had no shortage of garlic but was delicious.
(5)Jen E.
Delicious! We ordered the fried risotto appetizer, two different kinds of pizza and the cannoli and everything was amazing! I'm dying to take visitors from out of town to my new favorite pizza place in town!
(5)Robin H.
Great pizza, beer, and atmosphere!! E you want from your local pizza joint.
(4)Greta S.
We keep coming back to this place in part because they have a decent draft beer selection and Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. The chopped salad is a favorite and it's plenty to split between two. A pizza--any of them are good--is also perfect for a split, so it works out well. They'll custom the order, like I dislike arugula on my pizza so they just stack it up on one half--and it's just enough so I don't have to take any home--which I dislike. The service is hit or miss unless you sit at the bar--which now we always do. At the bar you have the attention of the bartender, who always seems more competent than some of the people waiting on tables. The hostess/s (there are always too many) talk on their cell phones and gossip among themselves and the wait staff to the point you want to knock them on the head and ask "did your mother teach you anything?"Silly St. Matthews girls. But, bottom-line: decent food, service you can endure and good drinks.
(4)Kellyo O.
Meh. Poor service with ok food = meh. Our server took forever to get us anything including bringing water to our table when we arrived. He complained that they were swamped - we were sitting outside and were one of 3 tables occupied of the 6. I hadn't seen inside. So we were understanding. Until I went inside to go wash my hands and there was one table occupied with 6 girls and another 2-top. Yes. That is all. They had 3 servers and a bartender. How were you swamped??? Food: got the Waverly. So this tastes like a Parmesan/ Gouda cheese pizza with a honey drizzle. I have no idea where the gig jam was and the prosciutto was pretty scarce. Food was ok though and no big burnt pizza bubbles like some specialty pie places let happen so that's a plus! Girlfriends go the Clifton and the St. Matthews (I think). They liked their pizza fine too. I may try this again but not until live tried some other pizza joints I have bookmarked.
(3)Liz L.
Good food-cute spot- expwnsive for what it is- wood fired gourmet pizza- limited menu (just pizza and salad and apps)- good wine- tvs to keep men happy-service isn't the best and they bartenders are plain rude. If food wasn't decent I wouldn't go back because of the attitude of bartenders that has occurred on more than 3 occasions.

We ate at Coal's Artisan Pizza. This restaurant is located on Frankfort Ave. The atmosphere was interesting...there is a bar but also a small room with tables. We were able to be seated right away but I could see where it would become busy quickly on a weekend. We ordered the Herb and Cheese flatbread (was okay...but nothing to write home about) and the Arancini...which was awesome! They came in an order of 6 and I think next time we would just get two orders of those. For the main course we ordered two half-and-half pizzas. One was half crescent hill/half Middletown. The other one was half Iroquois and half Bardstown. In my opinion the Bardstown was the best (if you like onions and mushrooms). The boys really liked the Middletown. The Crescent Hill and the Iroquois were okay. The dessert was great! They only have two items on their dessert menu...Canolli and Tiramisu...but we ordered both...and they were both awesome! Their tiramisu was a large piece and the canolli had a hint of orange and cinnamon which made it different but good. We have put this on the repeat list and they are opening a new location soon as well. The overall experience here was great...and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
(4)Cheryl W.
I held an event there recently and it was wonderful! Even though there were obstacles on my end, their event planner was knowledgable and professional and apparently a miracle worker, because the night went off without a hitch! Everyone had a great time, the food was fantastic, and our servers were Outstanding! (I can't brag on them enough!) We absolutely will be back, and are looking forward to the opening of the Middletown location as well. Thanks so much, keep up the great work, and we'll see you again very soon!!!
(5)Carla L.
My Brother in Law insisted that this pizza was amazing. We came so he could confirm it. Well, I must say that he was right. We ordered a St. Mathews and a Bardstown, first of all they are very veggie friendly, there are plenty of options for those of us who don't eat meat/chix/pork and those options are ridiculously yummy. I loved everything about both pizzas, and they are really tasty nice and hot right out of the oven. It is actually pretty tasty the next day for breakfast as I found out. What I really liked about the Bardstown pizza was that they know what they are doing, the onions are caramelized, the garlic roasted and the mushrooms are sautéed. There is nothing worse than when pizzerias just throw uncooked veggies on top of a pizza, but here they cook them just right and then roast that pizza with the toppings. Serious YUM. I really hope they decide to branch out to College Park in Orlando, that would be fabulous.
(5)Marc A.
Great in every way. I love pizza and this place rates at the top of my list. Great looking salads, good drinks and a nice atmosphere.
(5)Suzanne B.
Now I know what all the fuss was about! I had several friends rave to me about Coals, but I hadn't ventured out to try it yet. There are just too many great restaurants in Louisville to choose from sometimes. Finally I found a friend willing to join me for an early dinner at Coals and I was not disappointed. Bonus: Happy Hour M-F from 4-6! We met at 5:30, so everything we ordered ended up being a great bargain. The Brownsboro Pizza, Arancini, and Stuffed Mushrooms were some of the tasty things we enjoyed during our dinner. All were served piping hot, so caution as you try and enjoy everything as quickly as possible. It all tasted so fresh, and the consistency of everything was just right, from the crispy panko crust on the Arancini, to the soft thin crust on the pizza, and the slight crunch of the toasted cheese on the pizza. Outdoor seating abounds, but I think this would also be a great place to go during the winter. It just feels cozy, with the pass-through from the oven to the dining area, an inviting-looking bar, and 1/2 booth, 1/2 tables that are snugged up around the perimeter of the room. If you've heard the fuss, don't wait any longer to go to Coals. It's on my new repertoire of restaurants to frequent in the 'ville!
(4)Anil B.
They have 1 server to server 12 tables at busy lunch time.but the Artisan pizza's are amazing!!!we were a group of 4,and all ordered different pizza's and all were our of the park!!!!
(4)Mark G.
Great customer service. Really good thin crust pizza and reasonably priced. The only downside is it is very small. The night we went was during the week and people left because there weren't enough seats. My wife has a peanut and nut allergy and we called ahead of time. They informed all their staff so when we arrived they already knew about it. Definitely a must have on our list.
(5)Heather M.
OMG! The best pizza we have ever had. The crust is thin so you don't feel bloated or greasy after eating it. The ingredients are fresh and light. The wedge salad was the best I have ever had and I am not exaggerating when I tell you that it was half a head of lettuce. I wasted what would be a 'house salad' at other restaurants. My husband had the house salad and said it was the best he had ever had. We had the cheese sticks (we didn't know they'd be the same size as a pizza or that the salads would be ginormous) and the buffalo chicken pizza. I never thought I'd like onion straws on a pizza; sooo good. We didn't leave room for dessert but I'm going to save room for a brownie next time. The ambiance is lovely and fits Frankfort Ave. We cannot wait to go back. My in-laws had lunch there today and said it was the best pizza they ever had and that you can get a pizza and salad for $9.50 each for lunch!!! Absolutely delicious and worth a wait if there is one.
(5)Olivia B.
Meh, the lunch service isn't as bad as people say... . So, down and dirty: the coal fired oven bit is taken seriously. And they get the crust mostly right, thin and full of toasty, yummy crispness and unexpectedly charred in spots. More than the usual is available on draft - a plus - though it didn't seem that draft or bottle offerings were completely / accurately included on the written menu. Anything with Nueske's bacon is recommended - the smoky, intense and appealing flavor improves anything! That said, they don't cut their fresh mozzarella appropriately; it winds up fairly tasting like hot spackle / crack fixative after being cooked on an actual pie. No idea whether their fresh mozze merits the effort or not - but as is, it's a waste of time and taste buds. Everything needed salt and pepper, desperately. Seriously. Sad face. So, although my draft German beer was fresh and almost in the right temperature range, I can't say that I'll be driven to return... Their portions (at least at lunch) are such that a typical person would eat 3/4 of a pie, just as a metric to advise on ordering. That's also important because, frankly, I've found that their pizzas are far better eaten cold as leftovers than in the spot itself, or even with takeaway than at the restaurant itself. Just sharing my two pennies.
(3)Tuan V.
Delicious pizzas. Skip the chop chop dish. Nice, small atmosphere.
(5)Adam C.
Interesting menu with items named after parts of town, which is a nice touch. The meatballs were pretty good and we tried the St Matthews pizza. The pizza was not bad at all, not the best I have ever had but definitely worth trying again. I want a pizza I can't wait to have again, this was not it. So I guess I have to go back and try a different part of town. At least 4 signature pizzas sound good, so I will have to make sure to get back and try them soon. We have a ton of pizza options in Louisville, this one has some potential.
(3)Katherine C.
Great pizza! Thin, crispy crust with excellent toppings. Our two favorites are the buffalo chicken w/onion straws and the fig & goat cheese. The arancini for an app is also excellent. Great beer selection.
(5)Gregory G.
The pizzas at Coals are such teases. Three of us dropped by last week for lunch and were impressed by almost every aspect of the restaurant. The decor was great and for a brief moment we actually thought we were at a cool, trendy bistro in a big city. Our server recommended their pizza combos which come with either soup or salad and your choice of one of their more popular pizzas -- St. Matthews, Clifton, Brosnboro or Bardstown. We opted for one pizza/tomato soup combo (Bardstown) and the Waverly. The tomato soup came out first and contrary to what many of the Yelp reviews claim, it was just "ok." The over-sized house made crouton on the side was delicious, but I think the wife makes a better home made roasted tomato bisque. Just saying. After we finished up the soup our two pizzas came out cooked to perfection (we didn't have a problem with them being undercooked). The Bardstown came with a bunch of different types of mushrooms, carmelized onions, garlic and three types of white cheese. And the Waverly came with crisp prosciutto, fig jam, four types of cheese and a balsamic reduction. Both of them were amazing! Also, as a side note, for dessert they were serving bread pudding and mozzarella ice cream. Mozzarella ice cream!?! Next time... So why only 4-stars? Because I don't understand why "artisan" must necessarily equal "small"? The pizzas were pretty tiny, 8-inches in diameter. And with all those delicious toppings, an 8-inch pizza is just enough to tease you into coming back for more.
(4)Ryan M.
I normally am not a big fan of thin, crispy pizzas, but I love Coals. A little pricey for a pizza place but definitely delicious.
(4)Sarah W.
Admittedly, we visited at a slow time, but we had attentive and friendly service. Others have noted this was an issue, so I'm optimistic this has been resolved. I'll have to go sometime when they are packed to confirm. But given pleasant service, it becomes all about the food. And the food is super good. I just ordered the house salad and a Brownsboro pizza. The pizza was excellent, but the other reviews could tell you that. Can we talk about the croutons that came on my salad? Seriously, they've changed the whole crouton world for me. Giant, delicious, wonderful croutons. Crispy, buttery, garlicky on the outside and still a little soft on the inside. It was like a piece of garlic bread and a traditional crouton got together and had a delicious baby, and they raised that baby it up and sent it off to crouton college and sent it off to make its way in the world... er, in my belly. So the moral of this story is go to Coal's. It is a little on the pricey side for a pizza place, but worth the splurge in my book. Could be the pepperoni... could be the cheese... could be the croutons. Go see which ingredient you get worked up about.
(4)Andrew L.
We recently had my wife's birthday at Coals. We reserved the upstairs area for a group of about 25. The room was really nice and accommodated the group perfectly. I liked the fact that we were separate from the main restaurant and had our own bar, bartender, bathroom, TV, and music. Most importantly, the food and service was excellent. I would highly recommend Coals for a casual group get together. My wife and I have also been a number of times for lunch or dinner. We have never been disappointed.
(5)Jamie C.
Apps were good, we had the arancini and stuffed mushrooms. One thing I thought was weird was that the marinara sauce they served with the arancini was served cold. It threw the whole appetizer off. I've never had it where the marinara sauce wasn't hot. We had the fig, prosciutto, and gorgonzola and it was just really greasy. The gorgonzola was in excess and made the pizza have a weird taste to it. The ambiance was nice and the staff was helpful too. Not a bad place but will most likely not be returning.
(3)J N.
Coals paid Yelp to remove negative reviews. Mine isn't there anymore. They probably have to check Yelp everyday for new ones to delete. In a nutshell: avoid this place. Overpriced subpar pizza. Service is abominable.
(1)Merritt G.
The Highlands pizza is my favorite on the menu. It's essentially a BLT on pizza, and is absolutely wonderful. For the last two years, Coals has been my restaurant of choice for my birthday celebration. They are accommodating with reservations and I have never had a problem with their service. The restaurant is on the small size, so I would recommend arriving early to beat the lunch or dinner crowd.
(5)Paula C.
We ate here on a recommendation from folks at Churchill Downs. After a long day racing we ate at Coals and had one of the best pizza I've ever had. Great crispy dough with fresh items on each pizza without a lot of sauce. Excellent service in a nice safe area. Easy parking and good prices. Definitely be back next trip to Louisville.
(5)Jim S.
High quality food. Seneca pizza a bit underwhelming though - missed the mark with doughy insides and ingredients that fall off as you're attempting to take a bite. Awesome Caesar salad and the Best Tomato soup I've ever eaten in my life.
(4)Jeremy W.
Five star food Three star service. The wife and I went there today for the first time. The "flat bread" was great. My wife loved the marinara. The pizza was good as well, not nyc good, but good none the less. The place was around half capacity when we walked in, around 2 on a Sunday. The barkeep greeted us and assured us that we would be seated shortly. The whole process seemed way more complicated than what is should have been. If took a couple minutes to get our drink order in, taken by the girl bussing because the waitress seemed frantic. I had to get up and get us menus after about 5 minutes of getting our drinks and sitting idlely. Honestly, they probably needed another server on hand. The entire FOH was being run by 3 people, all acting independently as the bar keep, a server/hostess and a girl bussing tables. Props to the girl bussing, she had better people skills than the rest of the staff. Maybe management needs to find a new busser and get her on tables.

Seems like every time I visit one of my neighborhood's newest pizza joint I find a new favorite. Coal's is a great winter spot, with warm lighting, exposed brick walls and a location only a mile from my house that can tempt me out of hibernation. But I keep going back because of the insanely delicious coal oven pizza. It's my new favorite place in Louisville for a yummy pie. My favorites are the Bardstown (spicy pepperoni) and the Iroquois, a really neat take on the buffalo chicken pizza that doesn't skimp on the buffalo sauce. Also really love their starters, including the arancini di riso and the gorgonzola wedge salad. They also have a lovely patio at the Vogue shopping center for spring and summer, and we all know the value of a good patio in St. Matthews, now that Azalea has left us forever.

This place would be cute for catching up with an old friend, meeting coworkers, or a date where you actually want to enjoy conversation. I was surprised by where it was located when I got there though. From the outside, it looks like it would either be a business or a beauty salon. Anyways, they were classy, delicate, friendly, and overall helpful. Our waitress gave us her favs and I'm glad we listened because the Waverly was amazing. Especially since we added grilled chicken to it. Go for a glass of wine and a chill night.

in a city that is blessed with many amazing Pizza places, Coals is just as good as any of them, I loved how the pizzas are named after parts of town, The place would be better if they had more tvs to watch games

This is my favorite pizza restaurant in Louisville, and I have tried them all. First of all the pizza itself, particularly the crust, is just different than anything I have tried before. I assume this is a result of the coal fired oven. The crust just comes out perfectly charred and crispy, but soft on the inside. My favorite pie, and I highly recommend trying if you go, is the Iroquois, or their take on a Buffalo chicken pizza. Its has the typical ingredients of a buffalo chicken pizza but a couple of things set it off. One is the addition of piquillo and banana peppers. The other is the fried onions on the top. This seemed like a strange addition the first time I ordered it but it just WORKS. Possibly the best pizza I have ever had, period. The combination of flavors on this pie is just mouth watering. Another time I was there they had a pepperoni soup on special. This was just a play on the traditional tomato soup but a little bit spicy and with large chunks of pepperoni. Again, the best tomato soup I have ever had, although admittedly I am no connoisseur of tomato soup. Service has always been adequate if not a bit slow. They carry some decent beers which I appreciate. I usually go with the Schlafly Pilsner. I find the prices to be pretty reasonable even though the pies are not large. It cost about twenty bucks to get a papa johns pizza delivered so fourteen for a gourmet pie seems pretty reasonable. 5 star pizza, highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I have gotten into the habit of ordering a pizza the last few Sundays after busy weekends. Instead of going with our norm of Cafe Lou Lou's, we decided to call up Coals Artisan Pizza with our to go order instead. Normally, I'd be hesitant to give a 5 star review to a place that I had only been to once AND ordered TO GO...but Coals won me over from the initial phone conversation I had with Cameron, a manager who happened to answer. Without the typical 12" through 18" pie size options on their menu online, I was curious to know whether one pizza would be enough for the two of us. While some other pizza places might have told me it depends or some other cop out answer, Cameron went above and beyond in description (exactly the kind of description I like around food). He divulged that at 5'9 and 180 pounds (don't quote me on those numbers) him and his wife could share one pizza and a salad and be fine. Perfecto! My boyfriend and I had actually just made and devoured a salad at my apartment, so in line with Cameron's suggestion ordered just one 8 slice, ten inch pizza to go halfsies on. Just the one Waverly pizza was enough for that visit - and enough to realize this is a 5-star establishment - but I will most definitely be back for more. In the right mood, even the bird-like eater that I am could order a whole Waverly for myself, leave only a crumb and feel great about it. Usually a white pizza does not have enough going on to be interesting for me, but this mixture of Asiago, Parmesan and Gorgonzola topped with prosciutto, fig jam and a balsamic glaze was absolutely wonderful. It's a salty and sweet party, with a dash of astringency for your tastebuds. It's not even 24 hours later, but I already feel a touch of nostalgia coming on for the Waverly. Yes, that may bit a tad dramatic, but I know this place will become a mainstay for my pizza cravings. Go in sometime, order a pizza or two and let one of the friendly staff members tell you all about their culinary methods and history. They proudly care about their establishment, which of course makes the place even that much better.

My husband and I chose to try Coals for our "date night" last weekend. Not a date so much as just dinner out without our kids! Some friends had recently tried it and enjoyed the pizza so we took their recommendation. We arrived at around 8 pm and were seated right away but if we had had a larger party we would have had to wait. We each ordered beers which were very good. They seemed to have a nice draft beer selection. We each ordered a Caesar salad also. They were pretty large in size for a side type salad which was nice and the dressing was good, possibly made in house? Be aware of three things when considering the Caesar salad though. First the romaine is served as whole leaves. Looks nice but generally needs to be cut up and mixed a bit before being eaten. Second there is a single battered and fried anchovy on top. Not a big deal for people who like anchovies but for those who don't its easily removed. I was glad my husband figured out what it was before I bit into it to discover for myself. Third this salad has the best croutons in the world on it! They are big and delicious. Maybe made from their pizza dough? For our main meal we ordered the Middletown. It was pretty basic. Pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. I liked that the pepperoni a were allowed to crisp up a bit but the distribution of toppings was a bit hap hazard. I also would have liked more mushrooms. Over all it was a very tasty brick oven style pizza but I fail to understand why so many pizza places don't bother to be sure they slice the pizzas fairly evenly. It's a small thing but it shouldn't be that hard. It doesn't have to be perfect but close would be nice. I hate finding pieces from the same pizza that are half/ twice the size of each other. We also split a canoli for dessert which was pretty good and a nice change from desserts found at most restaurants. The only big thing that I caution you on is the size of the pizzas. There is only one size and it is not that large. Since we had had the salads and dessert we left decently full (not stuffed by any means) but if we had just ordered the pizza we would have been hungry still. I won't say we are particularly small eaters so if you are you may have a different experience but for us two average to slightly big eaters one pizza alone wouldn't cut it!

This is one of my favorite spots for pizza in town and I'm always happy with the wine and the food. I've loved everything I've ever eaten there except for one pizza I chose with Balsamic and Figs. It wasn't my favorite combo, but my poor choice, shoulda known I don't like sweet on pizza. Every salad, appetizer and pizza I've had otherwise are excellent. Ambiance is cute and appropriate for the food. Sometimes the service can be a little off and slow, but they're friendly and nice and that makes up for it. I will note this isn't ideal for groups. There was a table of 10 near me one night and there appeared to be many "send backs" to the kitchen and the servers seemed flustered with the size of the table. I also went in on a night when they were hosting a private party for Dillard's employees upstairs. As a result they had to stop seating in the restaurant in the downstairs and were accepting seating at the bar only. In my opinion, if you can't handle the volume of a private party you shouldn't have them. It is more important, IMHO, to keep your public dining room open than host a private event. Anyway, I've been many times and I've only seen that happen once. Overall, this is a neighborhood favorite for me and I go on a bi-weekly basis. There is a reason it was recently voted #1 pizza in Louisville. It if fresh, local goodness.

I guess my hopes were too high for this place. My wife and I went there last Friday night to a full parking lot and restaurant. This made me feel like it was going to be a great night but I felt this restaurant is HIGHLY overrated. We ordered the New England Clam Chowder to start off our night sitting at the bar since there was an hour and half wait for a table. Not a big deal and sometimes it is fun to sit at the bar. It took the bar tender a while to acknowledge our presents but with her being the only bartender behind the counter, I did not hold it against her. After a little while we got our waters and then another gentlemen that was working behind the counter took our orders and brought us the chowder. I was surprised to find that the chowder was rather watery and I could see the golden rim of oil floating around the top of the cup. But the soup probably tasted better than it was because of the cold weather outside and the fact that I was really hungry. My wife then ordered the St. Matthews and I had the Brownsboro. The St. Matthews is there take on the traditional Margarita pizza. She enjoyed it, but again because I think we were hungry. The Brownsboro is their equivalent to a "meat lovers" with pepperoni and sausage as it's toppings. I was hoping for a pizza but I was served pizza oil/grease with a side of pizza. The dough was soggy and was dripping with oil. The taste was decent but nothing to go crazy for. This is just another place in Louisville for people that don't know good pizza but think it is good pizza because of their fancy digs and cool sign. A definite pass.

Excellent Neapolitan pizza. Nice but casual atmosphere. Great staff! It was gratifying to see all the help keeping busy and not just standing around during slow times. They kept the place neat and spotless. The stuffed mushroom appetizer is good but not special. Basically mushrooms baked in bechamel with crunchy crumbs on top. All the pizzas looked fabulous. Mine was a white version with onions, kalamata olives, mushrooms, garlic, and the crowning touch, fig jam. I highly recommend adding that jam to any of their pizzas. It's a little exotic and adds just a tiny bit of sweetness to counter the sharpness in the cheese. Had a side of red sauce which was served with a fresh basil chiffonade on top. Nice touch! Looking forward to a return visit soon!

Come here if you're looking for authentic, traditional pizza and good service. Nice ambiance that's void of rowdy kids.
(4)Scott M.
We really like this pizza. They have two we can eat and both are very good!!! Had a special goat cheese ball the last time there, was great!!! The service is always been good, sometime a little to "Trendy" for our liking, but we work with it! :D

Came here last night "early" (about 5:45) and the place was slammed. There were maybe 3 open tables, and already a wait for larger parties. We decided to sit at the bar, and ordered the Waverly pizza with a couple glasses of wine, as we were in the mood for a quick bite. The Waverly has prosciutto cotto, fig jam, gorgonzola, and a balsamic reduction. There were several pizzas that looked good, so I will look forward to trying them in the future! The pizza was good. I've had coal-fired pizza many times, so I am familiar with it. My problem with Coals is that they didn't leave the pizza in long enough. The bottom was pretty soft, and it should have a nice crisp crunch. The pizza ovens are 1000 degrees, so they cook really quickly. I'll make sure I ask for "well done" next time. Their takeout business is already booming, but I truly think takeout does coal-fired pizza a disservice, as it gets a little soggier in the box since the crust is so thin.
(4)Jason R.
Very good thin crust pizza with plenty of choices for toppings. I really enjoyed the waverly. A couple of things held this back from 4 stars. The crust was a little too burnt on the bottom and that made some of the pizza inedible. The service wasn't great either. I will give them another shot because the pizza was very tasty. Hopefully my next experience will be better.
(3)Kelly T.
Nothing bad to say about this hidden gem in Louisville!! Small, quaint, and genuine artisan pizza. I had the Waverly and Bardstown pizzas along with the stuffed mushrooms....so so good. The Asiago cheese on the Waverly was a bit much for my taste but the jam and balsamic glaze was certainly on point. The crust amazed me...thin but puffy and golden; really yummy. I was thrilled with the rating in the window...a 100 from the health inspector. Very clean and you get a great view of the huge brick oven. Great service as well. I just wish it wasn't so hidden! Def a fan!!
(5)Melissa P.
Definitely not the best pizza I've had. Crowd was a negative---too uppity for me. Poor beer selection for a pizza place. "High end pizza" should also offer GOOD BEER. Italians perfected food. German's perfected beer. Would not give a second chance.
(2)Andrew R.
This place is great. It feels like a real Pizza place the minute you walk in with the exposed brick, tesla bulbs, and the big brick oven in the back. The service was good, very attentive, it was a little funny that as soon as I finished by beer, one of the busboys came over and asked if he could take my glass. Also the seating list system is a little clunky, but we still got seated pretty quickly. Obviously you guys care about the food, and the pizza is phenominal. We started with the risotto balls and caeser salad which were good, but not great. The risotto balls were a little too soft, and the cheese wasn't fully melted, and the caesar wasn't anything special. The pizza though, wow. Great crust - perfect, thin, crispy and chewy at the same time. Just the right amount of toppings to keep it solid - you can actually pick it up with two fingers without it flopping over. In a land of overtopped, stuffed, soggy pizza (aka Wicks, BoomBozz) Coals delivers on its coal fired-brick oven promise. We had the Bardstown and the Clifton. We will be back, Coals will no doubt be our new once a week a Pizza place.
(4)Vickie D.
Excellent experience last night at Coals. Wonderful Clifton Pizza and crisp salad and the service was exceptional. We were seated in the upstairs dining room and asked if we could be moved downstairs, which has a warmer feel. Rhonda the hostess graciously moved us quickly to a table downstairs. The food, service, and atmosphere make this a exceptional dining treat.
(5)Kate D.
Good pizza, uncomfortable atmosphere. Although the pizza was decently tasty, I don't think I'll be heading back to Coal's anytime soon. The crowd was very homogeneous with an elite, unfriendly air that left me wishing I'd gone to Cafe Classico instead.
(2)Emily J.
I got Coals for pick up and it was delicious. I was a little disappointed at the service over the phone but the food was great. I got the Brownsboro pizza covered in delicious pepperoni, basil, and mozzarella and a Caesar salad, both very tasty. I really wanted garlic bread, but they don't have any unfortunately. But I did like the pizza a lot. The tomato soup is also a treat with homemade croutons. You only get like 4 croutons with your soup and you will definitely want more so ask for extra if you're not watching your carbs. The pizza itself bursts with flavor and the crust is that perfect combination between thin but not overly crispy. I am looking forward to actually going to the restaurant sometime soon.
(4)Amanda D.
Delicious pizza!! We have made reservations each time we go. We request to be seated on a little patio outside each time and love it. Having children quick service and getting food in a timely fashion matters. Service is always great as is the food!! Waverly is def. our faveorite followed by the buffalo chicken pizza which has crispy onion rings on it! Yum Yum love this place. Great for kids too.

You know, I want to like Coals better than a 3 star, but the service and the non-pizza items keep it from being higher. The pizza is a 4 or 5 star. I have tried most of the speciality pizzas and haven't met a dud yet. I like most of the toppings and I am a big fan of the crispy, chewy, somewhat charred crust. BUT, the service can be really spotty, ranging from OK to abysmal, and I experienced a real disappointment with a sandwich, in particular the Coal Oven Burger. When the menu is limited to pizza and a few salads and sandwiches, there is no excuse for anything to be less than good. I was with my mom, and she thought the burger sounded good. The menu description sounds pretty tasty: "Dreamcatcher Farms burger seasoned and fired in our coal oven with a side of lettuce, tomato, onion and sundried tomato aioli. Served with Lay's potato chips." What she got was an overly dense, over-cooked, tasteless piece of meat on a dry bun served with a bag of chips. Somehow I am insulted more by the fact that they couldn't bother to open the bag of chips than I am by the abuse of the fine local beef. I haven't been back since. *****UPDATE I was contacted by a Coals representative through Yelp. She informed me that the Coal Oven Burger has been removed from the menu about a month ago and replaced by a Fried Green Tomato sandwich.

I liked the pizza. But, I love a Thin New York style and this was a close attempt. I love coal fired pizza but I would have been just as happy without the "artsy"styles. But it was great anyway. I had the Gorgonzola Wedge for an Appetizer. Loved it. Perfect amount of dressing. Loved it. And YES, have a Canoli. Well worth it.
(4)Tara L.
This might just be my new favorite pizza place. Went this past Saturday, the wedge salad is delicious! And I had the Middletown pizza. It was absolutely perfect! I will be back soon!
(5)Dave D.
This is one of my favorite casual places to eat. The food is great, pizzas see, really flavorful. The portions are perfect, it's not a large papa john's pizza. It's much better. Always had great service as well.
(5)Heather M.
The pizza is really great. Had the Clifton. On the flip...I'm gonna hold out that the "newbies" on the block get a little more organized, stop apologizing for everything, move your hostess station off the bar, and high hopes the bar tender will realax a little and drop the "perfect" usage every 5 secs. It's a great and easy concept, good food, good location and neat atmosphere. Just fix the little things and it will be "perfect" ;)
(3)Shal V.
We ordered pizza from Coal's for carryout. They not only have a lot of choices for toppings to create your own pizza but also have several specialty pizzas. We got the thin crust with half Brownsboro (Margarita pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, marinara, basil, shaved Parmesan) and half Clifton (Fennel sausage, carmelized onions, fresh mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, roasted piquillo peppers). The pizza was very delicious and I liked their Neapolitan-style thin crust. I'm curious to try the other specialty pizzas.

Just got home from dinner at Coal's. Extremely disappointing experience! After hearing good things about this place and receiving a gift card, I ended up leaving with a bad taste in my mouth. Our server Elizabeth was extremely inhospitable and unfriendly. After asking about the specials and telling her it was our first time there she offered nothing more than a uninterested point at the specials board and asked us what we wanted to drink. Not once did she smile or make us feel welcomed. We ordered the meatball appetizer, Lobster Roll special & a build your own pizza. The meatballs were the tiniest and most overcooked pieces of meat that I have ever been served. My daughter had one that was so hard when she tried to cut it with her fork half of it fell to the floor like a small stone. The sauce that they were in was incredibly delicious, but the meatballs should be called thrice baked. The pizza was good; not delicious. It was typical run-of-the mill, thin, crispy, oven fired pizza. All-in-all if the service had been better we would have given Coal's a higher rating but our water and sodas were empty before we were offered more and had to ask twice for a coffee. She failed to remove any of the dishes that were not being used and taking up space on the already overcrowded table. Having been in the service industry for many years I have an extremely high tolerance for bad service, however there is a difference between having a rough night at work and complete indifference for your customers dining experience. The place definitely has potential hopefully the service issue will be addressed. Ambiance was nice, very clean, interesting toppings and much room for improvement.

Unfortunately, my friends and I had an unpleasant experience duing our dinner on May 22, 2013. The waiter overcharged us for our drinks and instead of correcting the mistake, the manager blamed us for the miscommunication. He was extremely rude and never once tried to remedy the situation. It was not until we presented the ultimatum: either fix our bill or we will not pay for anything, that he finally discounted our drinks. He created an unfortunate experience over something easily fixable. I have never been treated this way as a customer. My friends and I were so stunned by such poor treatment. We will NEVER return and are telling everyone (families, friends, and employers) of our terrible experience and to not patronize Coals Artisan Pizza. We have always been supporters of local businesses and restaurants and it saddens us to not eat at this restaurant ever again.
(1)Carrie R.
This place just opened 3 weeks ago, but they've got it down pat! Everything was phenominal from the flavors of the food, to the selection of beers to the wonderful service. It's pretty incredible how good the pizza tastes. I will return to this place for sure!
(4)Ryan C.
I went here for lunch with my wife's family and it was really good. They have a whole slew of different Napoletano style pizzas, named after neighborhoods in Louisville. I am a purist and went with the St. Matthews, their interpretation of a margherita pizza. It was very, very good. My wife had the Waverly and it was very flavorful. The lunch special is a great deal with pizza and soup or salad for a very reduced price. Check this place out for quality Italian pizza.
(4)Jennie D.
This pizza is as good as it gets!! We have been living in Louisville for just over 3 months and we have eaten out quite a bit! With all the choices in Louisville for foodies, we agreed we would not eat at the same place twice until we went to all the places we wanted to try. Well with that said, we have been here 3 times!! Because it is sooo good! We usually start with a great appetizer--we had the brushcetta (special for the night) one time and it wa the best we have ever had anywhere!! This should be on the menu all the time!! Then we have a salad (again the best because of freshness and quality of ingredients!) and then we finish with a great pizza!! We have tried 3 different ones and never been disappointed! One night we actually had tiramasu and it was simply amazing and plenty for two to share! We love this place bacause it is great food, great staff (they all are wonderful and friendly--RARE today!!), and great location!! All this at a fair price!! We'll keep coming back!
(5)Harper H.
Good pizza but terrible front of house and service could be dramatically improved, avoid when crowded.

After 2 visits here, I am more impressed than ever. The June special pizza has fresh morel mushrooms in a rich creamy sauce with wonderful seasoning - either sage or thyme. It was better than Trader Joe's Tarte d'champignon; both now start me salivating just saying the words! And the crust is pure art - I ate every bite! We tried salads before this time- the chop chop and the wedge. I loved my chop chop with littles bits of fresh basil, tiny little cubes of a delicious pepperoni, mozzarella and tomatoes, chunks of seasoned chicken lightly tossed with italian dressing - It was so good, I didn't even try my husband's wedge, but he said he liked it alot. They have a good draft beer selection to satisfy my desire for a hefe and my husband's love of IPA. Staff here are professional, unpretentious and friendly. Atmosphere is nice too - music is not overwhelming - easy to converse. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area too. Might have to go back again this week before the fresh morels run out!

I was in the area shopping at Lotsa Pasta and decided I'd grab an early dinner since I always wanted to check this place out. I really didn't know anyone that had tried it, nor had I read any reviews, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I really liked it, and will go back! I sat at the bar since I was on my own, and used the bartender's recommendations for this visit. I wanted an appetizer, and was torn between the stuffed mushrooms and the Arancini (cheese and bacon stuffed fried risotto balls). She said to go with the mushrooms. They were very good and very cheesy. To me, there was a bit too much of the toasted breadcrumbs on them, but it was a little thing, and I still enjoyed them. I will try the Arancini next time. I was having a hard time again trying to pick a pizza, and she recommended the Seneca. It's sort of a Greek style pizza with artichoke hearts, olives, ham and mushrooms, among other things. It was very good and tasted especially fresh! One thing I would change is that they put a lot of the toppings in the middle area, rather than even out to the edges, but again, that was a little thing. The pizza crust was AMAZING! Very crispy, and it tastes like artisan bread! I normally don't eat the remaining outside crusts when I have pizza (I don't want to fill up on bread when there's cheesy topping goodness to be had with the next piece of pie), but I was not leaving any of this delicious bread to go to waste! The bartender even brought me some marinara to dip the crusts in, and the marinara was fantastic! It tasted like they had just ground fresh tomatoes in the back a few minutes before.

First I must preface this review with the fact that I do not like pizza. When my husband took me to Coals I was not sure i would find anything that i would like there. We tried 2 pizzas one being the Indian Hills and the other I can no longer remember. The Indian hills pizza is amazing. I absolutely love it. I even shocked my husband when he asked what i wanted to get for dinner and I suggested the coals Indian Hill pizza. The Chop chop salad is also very delicious. I will have to say that I have not been too thrilled with the soup that is served there but I suppose that is a personal preference. I see a lot of people ordering and loving it. The place does tend to be very busy but I have noticed even when waiting you get in fairly quickly. Over all I enjoy the place and its nice to have found a pizza that I can actually enjoy eatting. The lunch menu has a perfectly sized individual pizza that I wish was served on the dinner menu. Well worth checking out. One thing to make note of. this place truly is a pizza place. there is next to nothing for non pizza eaters.
(4)Emily Y.
Meh. Pizza was tasty but restaurant is overrated. Pricey for serving size. Food took forever to come out. Server didn't seem happy to be serving. Didn't crack a smile even once. Might go back if there's no wait because it's close to our house. But otherwise, it's just kind of a trendy place to eat by our accounts.

well me and my wife did a 3 day mini trip to louisville over easter weekend , and as usual i always pick 5-6 places to check out, because its who i am and its what i do , i love to eat , and i love to try different places, and coals was very different, as i walked into the place i loved the dark wood and brick , the place just felt cool , first came the flatbread with cheese, it looked different than my 11 year old was used to seeing and he snarled his nose at it , and after a few minutes we were fighting over the last piece !!!!! it was great, then came the 2 pizzas one for me and one for the wife, we both had the lunch specials , the salad my wife has was awesome, very fresh and the balsamic dressing was very good, then my soup !!! ok its tomato soup no big deal rite? it was very good , i loved the texture of it and the smell was so good , and the taste of it was to die for !!!!! my wife just had a cheese pizza , only because of her catholic faith and no meat on friday till after easter, it was very good , perfect crust , cheese was to fresh and tasty, i had a pizza with wild mushrooms , carmalized onions, not your red sauce style pizza, it was amazing, im so glad i tried this place , my only regret is that i live in a city thats 100 miles away from this place , thank you to our waiter who did a great job , we will be back soon !!!!!!
(5)Zachary H.
A fancy quaint little pizza joint. If you love pizza but want to go somewhere it's a bit more upscale this is the place. The pizzas are pretty thin and light with a crisp crust. They also have an ok drink and beer selection. Not a cheap place to be sure and not the place if you want some greasy cheap pizza, but good on the right occasion.
(4)Sarah C.
I'm not quite sure how to describe my feelings towards Coal's. Pizza is pretty hard to mess up, so I'm giving Coal's 3 stars. For me, it didn't have the 'wow' factor to make it the best in Louisville. The pizza is neopolitan style, so it's relatively thin although the crust is quite puffy. My friend and I got the Brownsboro and Clifton to split. While they were both quickly devoured, all in all, my impression was just so-so. One of our pizza's was burnt to a crisp (literally blackened crust), so that part was left uneaten and the other pizza was relatively limp. For the price ($13-15 per pizza), I feel as if Coal's just didn't do if for me. There is room for improvement in terms of service - we came at about 8pm and waited close to 35 minutes for our food and continued to wait for our checks, waters, etc.
