Clifton's makes really, really good pizza. In a city that has tons of good pizza options, Clifton's is one of the best. Before my recent visit, it had been a few years since I had a chance to eat their pizza. Still, it was always in my head that Clifton's was my favorite pizza in the city. That memory doesn't entirely hold true, though I'd still put it in my top 5 in Louisville. Clifton's serves some excellent pizza. Their pizza is built to near perfection. The crust is crispy and sturdy, with just the right thickness. They pile on plenty of toppings and TONS of cheese. Sooo much cheese. If too much cheese is bad, then I don't want to be good. There are a couple things I prefer for my pizza. For one, the pizza was a tad dry. I like my pizza to be saucy. Clifton's pizza is light on the sauce, and you may prefer that. The sauce was almost non-existent in the middle with a heavier ring around the outside towards the crust. For two, the pizza wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. It seemed to lack herbs and seasoning. Maybe I'm used to Impellizeri's heavily herbed and seasoned pies. Also, sauce generally adds a lot of flavor to the pizza, so the lack of sauce probably didn't help either. With all that being said, it's still very good pizza and you won't be disappointed if you give Clifton's a try.

I'm a fan of Pizza for sure, who isn't. I love the quote, pizza is like sex, even when it's bad it's still pretty good. As a matter of fact I've eaten a lot pizza in my lifetime so of course I was on board for coming here when my boyfriend suggested it. The night we went there was a band playing and while they weren't my cup of tea I was definitely feeling their vibe. They had that Louisville feel to them, they were all about supporting your local bands and restaurants and shops and such. Not to mention they were streaming live on the radio while we were there. So the atmosphere was really chill and laid back, which I liked a lot. The food - It was great. The pizza did that thing that you see in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons where the cheese went from the pan it was sitting on to your plate. It's probably some of the best pizza I have ever had an I plan to go back multiple times. If you're looking for GREAT pizza, great service and a great atmosphere, then visit this place. Frequently. The only downside is they don't have a lot of craft beers, but they have Blue Moon and domestics, but that should not be a reason to avoid them.

I love the Clifton's Special. It's their version of the supreme. Lots of toppings and lots of cheese!! They have live entertainment some nights in the larger upper dining room. Eclectic interesting decor, and there is no host/hostess so it's sit wherever you like, which is completely fine with me. Service is friendly, and prompt.

I like pizza. Clifton's makes good pizza. Winner. In my most humble and perfect opinion, Clifton's is the 2nd best pizza in the city, behind Impellizeri's. I cannot stand pizza that is completely drenched in sauce. And this is one of the reasons why I think Clifton's is so good. Minimal sauce. Lots of cheese. Plentiful toppings. AND ALL KINDS OF FLAVOR LOL.

We were pretty sceptical about this restaurant. We live nearby and yet never wanted to go there since from outside the restaurant looks dingy and sad. But last weekend, I wanted to eat pasta but didnt feel like driving too far. We read the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. It was a good decision! My baked spaghetti was good. The meatballs were my favorite. The portion was big too. My husband wanted to order pizza but didnt want to finish it himself, so he ordered calzone, which he usually wouldnt want to eat. But to our suprise, the calzone was good, stuffed with 6 pizza toppings to our choices and it was HUGE for $9.25! You know, sometimes when we eat marinara sauce, our mouth feel funny from the sourness of the sauce, their sauce didint give me that feel. Just right!

Local favorite- never disappoints! Have been coming to Clifton's for the last 15 years. Best pizza around hands down! Always leave with leftovers because it is so filling.

Louisville is a city that is chock-full of amazing pizza. Clifton's is one of the best. Friendly staff, nice location on Frankfort Avenue, and great food.

I came into town and dad, who has been coming here 20 years, notices his lasagna portion is a fraction of normal. He asked the waitress about that and she said it was normal but after some debate says she will replace it. A very long wait and it comes out- the new trainee waitress who (a older blonde woman) had been friendly before was now noticeably short with us- all the drinks were empty and we waited 10 minutes for her to come back- still short with us- but suddenly talk of no tip after she went back in and she comes out rainbows and unicorns nice- too late. The waitress brings an ashtray to my sister, we are on the patio, she is has been smoking since we got here and suddenly they come out less than 30 seconds later and tell her no smoking. Okay if they had done that when they saw her order with a cigarette in her hand 45 minutes before - fine - but not after the order debacle. Not sure I would waste a visit here when I come I to town.

Lunch time... Fast and friendly service with all kinds of choices. Today I had the Clifton Special pizza. I was shocked that the crust was crisp with all those toppings, love that! The decor is kind of odd, like an identity crisis. Great place for lunch and wasn't super busy. I'll be back!

I really love Clifton's pizza. I'm one of those that rarely eats pizza and it is usually on one of those I'm too exhausted to cook or go out kind of nights. I've ordered from Cliftons a few times now and have had the Clifton Special, which is their "the works" type of pizza. It is always full of meat and veggies and they definitely do not go light on the cheese, which is perfect! They always deliver quicker than quoted and always very polite on the phone. I definitely want to go in to the restaurant to eat one day because the actual location looks like a great place for pizza and a beer!

I ordered a pizza and it arrived 20 minutes late. The pizza was cold and the driver was rude. In addition, he reeked of cheap cologne, and so did my pizza. When I called to complain, the person who answered was extremely condescending and kept calling me "sweetie" and "honey." They gave me a credit for a free pizza, which I will not use.

I had 1/2 an order of breadsticks which were very under seasoned and had very little flavor on their own. Large size wasn't honestly a plus. Had a chicken Parmesan sandwich which was under seasoned, had very little sauce and wasn't what I was expecting. My hub had the pizza and thought it was similarly bland. Prices were decent and service was okay, but I wouldn't go back for the food.

If you like to taste your ingredients on you pizza and you love cheese, Clifton's is for you. I recently had a barbecue chicken pizza that was unlike any other. I definitely recommend ordering that the next time you are there.

I recently went for the first time to watch UK game and have some drinks. The beer choice on tap is decent but they do have more of a bottle selection. The bartender was very nice and welcomely. I also tried the stuffed mushrooms, which btw, I strongly recommend. Down side to that is I only had 6 on the plate, when I really wanted more after having one. Wish it had a better atmosphere though.

I moved to the Clifton area recently from out of town, and decided to try this place when my friend and her three year-old came to visit. The interior of the restaurant didn't look too inviting, but I like to support local businesses. I had heard they had a deck. We asked to sit outside, and were seated at one of four tables. The deck was fenced in, and that helped us keep the toddler focused on her food at the table. However, the server took our order and disappeared around the corner of the deck, behind the fence. We realized that they kitchen's service entrance was literally a few feet away from where we were seated. Throughout our meal we heard staff talking and using power tools (not sure why . . . ?). Another table came outside to sit on the patio, and people started smoking although there was a no-smoking sign. We appreciated that they server pointed this out, and they put out the cigarette. Within a few minutes, however, we smelled cigarette smoke coming from staff taking a break from the kitchen. In terms of service, our server was just going through the motions. The veggie pizza was loaded with cheese which looked yummy, but turned out to be salty and low-quality. The sauce really didn't have anything going for it. Overall, I thought that they prices were out of line with the quality of ingredients. This, coupled with the poor ambiance of the patio & restaurant interior, will keep me looking for another pizza chain to patronize.

The best pizza in town. I love the calzones too. Lots of toppings crust is medium thin. It has a bit of a salty taste, which I like. The dining room could use an update. Very cheap.

This place is a Louisville institution. Delicious, thick homemade pizzas, huge calzones, decent beer selection, eclectic local customers. Live music several nights a week. Definitely put this on the rounds of pizza joints to try.

I no longer live in Louisville, but I miss Clifton Pizza most of all. The Nine-For-Five Pizza is, simply, the best pizza to be found here on Earth. The crust, the sauce, the toppings - it's all just the best. I time my arrivals so that I can go there straight from the airport.

Do you like pizza? Do you like it pretty big, very cheesy, and reasonably priced? If you're thinking, "No, that doesn't really sound like something for me." Then go ahead and stop right now because Cliftons Pizza Co. isn't for you. Every time I've had Cliftons it has been excellent. Big and cheesy is certainly no joke here as they are not skimpy with toppings and especially not with the cheese. They have garlic cheese sticks that are absolutely amazing. Realistically, the only people I'd recommend stay away are those with heart conditions. Everybody else needs to give Cliftons a try. In fact, go ahead and give it a try even if you have a heart problem, you only live once!

Yesterday my friend and I went to cliftons pizza co, the food was great but the service was shit. I asked for Dr. Pepper but the waitress gave me diet mt dew, how the hell do you get diet Mountain Dew from dr pepper? On the other hand, the meatball sub I ordered was great. So if you end up going to cliftons pizza co, expect great food but shitty service.

There food is amazing and a cheap price. If you're a pizza fan and have never been here I would come here. They have a lot of choices which you can pick from the menu. This is also a great environment most nights that I have been here they have a jazz band come in. This would be a great place to bring your kids.

Just what you expect for a pizza joint! Great food reasonable prices! If you are looking for some of the best pizza in town this is the spot! Waiter did a great job! But could use a bit more lighting

This city has some great pizza, which is why I am so confused regarding the love people have for this particular one. I hear the calzones are good, but I found the crust of the pizza to be bland, the cheese to be rubbery and the sauce very pasty. To add insult to injury, the mushrooms were obviously canned and, therefore, waterlogged. Maybe I will try a calzone in the future, but certainly not the near future. I do have to say that the atmosphere was very nice. Although it was loud, it was hip and inviting.

Absolutely delicious pizza! Recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good pizza place. Took home my left overs and enjoyed it later that night because I could not resist it.

Neighborhood pizza joint with live music. First off I'm frankly not a fan of American style pizza with thick, gooey toppings. Just not my thing. And that's what Cliftons does. But when my Dad was alive we'd always go to see some of the old geezers playing Dixieland, blues and whatnot. And frankly, that's exactly what I like in a neighborhood joint. "The microphone smells like a beer" indeed. Hence five stars for being the epitome of a neighborhood joint with zero pretension, thick pizzas, and plain old cold beer.

Almost five stars. A shout out goes to Clifton Pizza for being what I want in a pizzeria! When I think pizzeria, I think of a dark place that has a bar feel. Clifton is that. The lighting, the decor, the live music, and the employees all pitch in to give this restaurant the perfect aesthetic. I also enjoyed the helpful and personable service. I felt like I was ordering from a friend of the family that actually had my best interest in mind. The pizza was good, but lacked personality. Nothing about the pizza was interesting or "one of a kind," but it is tasty enough to merit 4 stars. Thank you Clifton for upholding my pizzeria expectations!

it used to be great but over the years it's went down hill. depressing atmosphere. lack of care for the place. what happened?

Clifton's Pizza Co. was given to me as a suggestion by a close friend with whom I did some fine dining. Fine is not what I would consider to be the interior of the place. But rest-assured it is very comfortable. There is an area for live music, which was a nice touch on my visit; and an area that was more for bigger groups and quiet families. Dimly lit, this place knows how to present your pizza in the most dreamy ways. I had the deluxe veggie, which has been mentioned before, and it was fantastic. They slather on the right amount of toppings and nothing feels too overpowered. The brews were cold and tasty of course. The prices are fitting for the pizza and fare you're getting, so don't worry about value. Go for the rustic feel of a tried and true pizza place. There is a bit of history in the air and it fits right into the neighborhood it calls home.

  • Josh B.

Ten years after going to Clifton's regularly for live music on the weekends, I was reintroduced by a co-worker during lunch. The Calzone is so big it fed me at lunch, my wife for dinner, and me again as a late-night snack. It is amazing to see that this place has not "sold out" by jacking up their prices, shrinking serving sizes, and opening several locations around town. Clifton's, for the sake of everything holy, please don't change.

  • Rachel F.

Smile! Seriously - say cheese! The pizza is ooey, gooey goodness. If you want healthy - don't go. If you aren't a cheese loooover - don't go. We really enjoyed the Chicken Alfredo with spinach added. Kinda thin crust, crispy on the edges, and not skimpy on the toppings, but not falling off the slices either. I was impressed that one order of breadsticks and a small pizza fed 3 of us. (One light eater) 23 bucks including a coke. You for real HAVE to get the breadsticks. Really unique and tasty. They are a good 10 inches long and an order is 2. (Plenty for 4 folks) Flaky, buttery, garlicky soft yet just crisp enough on the outside. Love them. Solid place, super chill atmosphere and a pretty killer deck.

Still one of my favorite pizza places in town. We always have great service and never leave hungry. Try the stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and make sure you try one of the Calzones, they're amazing too.

Calzones as big as a small child, good for 2 - 3 meals. Great pizza and good free music how do you beat that?

  • Blake M.

I absolutely love this place. It's my first thought whenever I consider going out for pizza. The lack of parking is the thing that keeps me from going there more often.

    (5)
  • David F.

If you're looking for atmosphere than this isn't the place, but if you're looking for the best calzones in Louisville than you'll love it. I've had their pizza and calzones and I keep going back for the calzones. They're huge!! I usually eat half and then take the other half home. The crust is perfect and the toppings inside are plentiful. If you stop in on a weekend you'll be treated with music from some of Louisville's best.

This place makes me think of Louisville, KY. Unfortunately, it's not a good thing. An Italian pizza joint, Clifton's is dungy, depressing, and overall just a downer. The pizza is nothing that I'll remember. I'm surprised that I remembered to write the review the next day. How does this place avoid the 2-star rating? Well, the marinara sauce is great. The service was much better than average, and they had $8.75 pitchers of solid draft beer. Not an overall avoid, but definitely could use a facelift. I have the same feelings about this restaurant that I do about Louisville. Not for me, but not too bad either.

    (3)
  • Kate D.

I can't say enough about their deluxe veggie pizza. It is one of my favorites, and I'm big into pizza. A fun neighborhood hangout.

  • Cinimod S.

I can't believe I have not reviewed this place yet. The best pizza in the city. Everytime I go out to eat when I go back home, I think do I want Clifton's or something else. I have been going here for years, decades even, and the place has never disappointed. They have a good beer selection, and a great marinara sauce. There is music sometimes, which is usually pretty good, although eclectic and leaning toward eccentric.

Live music, cheap beer, beautiful & hearty pizza. Great neighborhood pizza joint.

found this place on a whim through a co-worker. their lasagna is to die for. best lasagna i've had in a restaurant, ever. they're quick with delivery orders and not too bad with orders in-house. my friends ordered bruschetta and said it had way too much garlic. that's the only complaint i've hard about their food, though. not a big place on atmosphere. went last night and there was a singer who was pretty good but was more of background music. love this place and can't wait to go back.

  • Chad P.

The Pizza is AMAZING. I used to love this place. But the last two times I went there the service was awful. I probably will not be going back, which is a shame. The last time that I went there, it was me and my fiance Katie having a nice little date night. We went down Frankfort Ave and were just hitting up some of the shops. We decided to eat at Clifton' because their Super Veggie pizza is wonderful, its loaded with onion, green and black olives, mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, and zucchini... such a great pizza. We walk in and are told so sit anywhere, cool with me. So we take a seat. We are sitting for quite a while before anyone talks to us. We finally get service, we order right away because we knew what we wanted and we had already been waiting for a bit. It takes a normal time for the pizza to come out, but, when it comes out it has green pepper on it, which we asked for it not to have. We call the server over and tell him of the mistake. He grabbed the pizza off the table and says "The damn kitchen can't read" and storms away. So again, we are waiting for food. At this point my water is empty and i have no drink. Pizza comes out, with no apology and i have to ask for a refill since my cup has been empty for at least a good 10 min. The rest of the meal went ok, pizza was super tasty. I think we saw our server maybe once while eating. The place was also not too busy so it was not like he was slammed with other tables. Basically, if you love good pizza go to Clifton's, if you love good service you might want to any of the other great pizza joints around Louisville.

Nice, friendly place - a bit run down. Food was average but very reasonably priced. My husband and I had meatball and hot Italian sandwiches so we didn't try the pizza or calzone.n Definitely have beer and apparently good music entertainment (which we did not experience).

Everytime I am in town visiting family I HAVE to stop in! I LOVE the pizza. My dad would always take us here when it was only half the space but the pizza's still great as ever. The BEST I tell ya!!

  • Jesse W.

Wow, no reviews yet? Well let me be the first to tell you that this "little" neighborhood joint had the best pizza in the city. Most people will point you towards Wick's, but those people are lying to you. In fact, they probably just told you that so you wouldn't crowd Clifton's up while they were eating. Not very good friends if you ask me.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
