Cash only, y'all! I've been here once for breakfast with my family. The food was just "okay," and I regret paying money for something I could prepare tastier at home. Coffee was okay. I did have a bite of my Dad's biscuits & gravy which were good and the service was speedy - that is what earned two stars. The place felt dirty & menus were sticky. I don't see the appeal.

Hole in the wall! But an awesome place to go for breakfast! Disclaimer: they only accept cash. I love this place because it reminds me of our old restaurant, only ours was a little more up to date and larger. You walk in on a weekend and you know who the regulars are---they are friendly and even open the door for you. The same people are always working-which is nice. They start to recognize you. Its a very open, happy place. They have a boom box that plays music, mostly new pop. The one waitress likes to sing along, she has no filter and I love it! The whole wait staff and cooks are just your normal silly restaurant workers. There is a small bar right when you walk in that faces the cooking area, this seats about 7 people. The whole place maybe seats 50, if that. The orders come out fast, hot and greasy! They are open 24 hours I think, the open sign is always on. The prices are cheap, we spend about $14.00 each time we go, and Jason always gets coffee. They have corned beef hash if any of you southerners even know what that is.... Bacon can sometimes tasted like it sat a little bit to long, you can see where they pre make it and have it piled up so they can get the food out quickly. We normally get 2 eggs, hashbrowns, CBH and/or bacon. It always comes out the same, never any surprises. I do ask them to cook the CBH and hashbrowns extra cripsy. Really this is our go to place when we are in a hurry or leaving town and need some breakfast before we start a long drive. We can be in and out in 25 min-we have not been there when there is a wait at all. That does not mean it doesnt happen.

It wasn't terrible for what we paid but it wasn't that great either. It was very under seasoned like they were allergic to basic salt and pepper. Overall the staff was nice with the exception of this older, gray haired man cooking. Ordered steak and, when the waitress asked, requested it medium rare. When it came back it was cooked well done to the point of not being edible. It was a thin cut, so we gave them the benefit of the doubt and pointed it out. The cook immediately gave us a dirty look when the waitress took it back to him. When it came back he stared at us from the stove like he was just daring us to say something. This time it was so under cooked that the center was still cold and raw. We ended up giving up, getting a togo box, taking it home, throwing it on the skillet for a few moments and eating at home. Even the rest of the staff seemed apprehensive of this guy. I've heard it can be good but I'd refuse to go in if I knew that guy was cooking that day.

A joint where time stopped and the food hasn't changed. Decent food, good people, cash only.

We had a brilliant time at Barbara Lee's. For out-of-towners like us (ok, we are more like 'out of country-ers'!) we loved the way this place operates. We plopped down in a booth and joined the diner-wide conversation with the locals whilst our breakfasts were whipped up on the grill from scratch. Price was cheap. Conversation was good. We left happy and with an up-to-date knowledge of all the latest local gossip and news! Whats not to love? As as side note: I know Americans take this for granted but the unlimited soda thing (with the final serve popped in a to-go cup) is such a novelty for us Aussies. Love it!

Having missed breakfast at the hotel we were staying at, we had the best excuse to seek out something yummy and local. I highly recommend working this into you schedule if you're in Louisville or the surrounding area. Really what sums our experience up is "YUMMY". I had the Mexican Breakfast, which was chilli and eggs (yummy, not everyone's cup of tea but I loved it). All of the food we saw served looked great, but by far my favorite bit was the biscuits... seriously people, take a day off your paleo or low carb diet the day you try Barbara Lee's. We sat at the counter, which was a good move, we had a good giggle with the guys behind the counter and it's always my favorite thing about a diner that you can see your food being made fresh right in front of you with no pretension. It's just good down home cooking yummy. Of course it's thanks to yelp that we found this place in the first place.... thanks again yelp.

This is the greasy spoon me and my friends were looking to find. Everything is made fresh on the grill as you wait, and is super quick. Rumor has it that its open 24 hrs but I don't necessarily remember seeing that posted anywhere. This is a small diner with several booths. My coffee cup was never empty and I was stuffed after ordering an Old South Breakfast which was (a full order! of) biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon (loved I didn't have to choose), 2 eggs and hashbrowns. Food came out quick and our waiter was personal and patient as our table of 4 gabbed and gabbed. Make sure you bring cash because its cash only. My breakfast was $10 and I left a heafty tip for in any inappropriate convo the rest of the restaurant may have had to hear of our rambunctious group! If you're looking for typical diner fare in the crescent hill neighborhood - head over to Barbara Lee's.

I've been to Barbara Lee's twice now, and loved it both times. Nothing fancy, just good simple food... great breakfast food, and the burgers aren't bad either. What I really liked about the place was the employees! They were great fun both times, good naturedly picking on each other, joking and having fun, without sacrificing good service! So in addition to a good classic "diner" meal, I also got free entertainment!

I am new to Barbara Lee's and haven't had any food but I'm loving the atmosphere. Their hot chocolate just tastes better because of the atmosphere! I highly recommend everyone to go out of their way to see this down to earth restaurant!!!

Make no mistake, this isn't a "5-star Restaurant" but it gets my five stars because it's the EPITOME of everything you want in a place like this. It's a real dive, with weirdos, odd hours, a juke box and really kooky fun waitstaff. I love, love love, Barbara Lee's especially after moving back from NYC and lamenting the lack of 24-hour non-chain diners. Once I went with a bunch of friends and we ordered 2 cheeseburgers cut into quarters as appetizers before we obliterated our breakfast food. It was a solid dining choice.

The atmosphere, size, seating are all less than desirable for me. I'm not a fancy person either but I do expect places to at least try to make their establishment comfortable. This comes across as a southern joint based on outer appearance and reviews from people I have spoken to but the food screamed mid-western truck stop. The gravy is decidedly not southern by any means in my book. It was more of a thick cream during my visit. The corn beef hash tasted mostly like the grill it was cooked on. To be honest, I didn't find the menu to be expansive, so I am a bit confused on exactly what their specialty is? I kept thinking back to "Office Space" and was curious as to "What do, you do here?" In fact, I couldn't figure out a lot of things. For example the place was nearly dead empty but yet our service time was ridiculous. It did have an "Everybody knows Everybody" kind of feel but after looking around I was pretty certain I didn't want to know Anyone there. I wasn't too pleased to find staff smoking just inside the door either. They are open 24 hours but take cash only... Take from it what you will. Knowing all the wonderful options the neighborhood of Clifton provides, this place came across as out of place, out of time, and certainly out of consideration for a return visit. *On a side note, though I mention it was fairly empty on the night I visited, it was loud. Mostly because the staffs conversation was an overwhelming ruckus.

Very good food generally. The staff is always friendly. It is a total dive, but as those who frequent restaurants know this usually are the best places. The seating and restaurant in general is on desperate need of remodeling. The decor, tables and seating are from the 1970's. Downside is it is a cash only operation so going to the ATM first is a must.
(3)Megan M.
This place was delicious! It's your perfect 'hole in the wall' local diner. Don't let the looks fool you-it's a great breakfast spot with pretty fantastic (and hilarious) staff.
(5)Andrew K.
After all these years of friends telling me about this all night diner I finally stopped in and tried it. It's a classic diner vibe which you can tell has been there for quite a while. The two classic arcade games in the corner help pass the time. There was two ladies who were working the night we came in. Both were nice but I feel like one of the ladies didn't appreciate my sense of humor. I wouldn't have expected anything less from a classic diner vibe. I ordered the steak'n'eggs which was delicious. A good portion of steak was cooked well. The interior is a bit dated but you got to appreciate that when going to a diner that has been around for a long time. So after a night of bar hopping and you want something to eat, stop in and grab some food to sober you up!

This place gives dives a bad name. Had the eggs and cornbeef hash. It was like eating a salt stick Hash right out of a can. No butter only cheap margarine that was yellow. If you have no other choice but eat here start your diet now.

Haha, people used to ditch class to come here during high school. Being a goody goody, I was not one of them. Although I did skip class to go to Waffle House one morning. Anyway, my parents live near here and are regulars. Seriously. They know the wait staff by their first names and in turn, the staff knows them. I would rate this place above waffle house. It's cleaner, the staff are friendlier and have full sets of teeth, and the waffles are thicker and better. My mom and I had the waffle and split three strips of bacon for breakfast. The bacon was good, but not as crispy as I would have liked. The waffles were very thick and yes, I ate the entire thing. My husband ordered the special, which was advertised on the door, but was the same price as it was on the menu. Go figure. The service was fast and the prices were inexpensive. I'll go again because it is very convenient to my parent's condo, but otherwise, I much prefer Wild Eggs or Calistoga for breakfast food. By the way, Barbara Lee's is Cash Only.

Only place I've ever been to eat where the waitress is diggin' on some old metal. Downside is that it's cash only, but def worth the trip to the atm.
(4)Visa P.
I got the double bacon cheeseburger and fries meal with a water. I wanted sweet tea, but the waiter insisted I don't telling me it was gross. I chuckled and applaud him for telling me the truth. This is your standard fair diner open 24 hours no frills and actually much tastier than Dennys or the absolutely worst in my opinion I- hop. Ok now let's talk about my food I got my burger fully dressed. I was starving and it only took like 5-10 minutes to receive my order. Everything came out fresh especially the fries which where piping hot and the burger it was super tasty and very satisfying better than I expected since this was my first time coming here. Ohh and my order was under 7 dollars which is Awesome. I'm glad I stopped by to support this local business. I'll be back maybe a little tipsy but I definitely want to try the breakfast.
(4)Yon P.
Best Omelette I ever had. So fluffy and the corned beef hash was amazing! VEE had the Burger and it was good too. Great breakfast for only $14.75. I would've paid much more for this meal, so a $5 tip was a must.......
(4)S. A.
It's so good and we love it and the dude they have cooking during the day like second shift now is an awesome cook. Best out of all of them. The next time we go our plan is to put "what's new pussycat" on the jukebox 20 times in a row with one "it's not usual" in the middle. No, that's just a joke John Malaney told. Sounds like a good idea though.
(5)Phil B.
I've been eating at Barbara Lee's for six years. It is down the street from me so I consider myself a regular. The food is decent and reasonably priced. The staff is always friendly and they place is clean for the most part.
(4)Tom M.
Not bad, not that great either. I think the attraction for most people is the hours and the atmosphere because it's certainly not the food or the price. The food isn't that great honestly and the prices aren't either. They use margarine on the toast and the hash browns are hash burnt on the outside while still soggy on the inside. Eight and change for two eggs, sausage hash browns and an oj, they could at least use real butter on the toast.
(2)Jackie C.
Open until ridiculous hours usually - but they tend to not keep regular hours. They do not take cards of any kind - which I constantly forget and have to pull IOUs from friends. The biscuits are buttery, greasy and wonderful. The patty melt there is great and the fries are always hot and salty. Not five star cuisine, or even great burgers, but it's the best way to fix beer hunger ever.
(3)Jason R.
This is my favorite "diner" in Louisville. We hadnt found many greasy diners like you see all over NY but this is exactly that. It feels like a truck stop diner - exactly what we were looking for! Please note, they only accept cash. Plenty of regulars in there as everyone knows each others names. A very friendly staff and hustle around the small establishment in a flash! Plus they offer corned beef and hash - what's not to like?!?!
(4)John R.
Barbara Lee's is exactly what you'd expect. As long as you aren't looking for fancy dining, and just good ole fashioned diner food, you will leave here pleased. Good: delicious, greasy diner food/friendly staff Bad: only take cash/simple setup/bathrooms are so-so/not a lot of tables I love Barbara Lees because I can come here anytime and get the good food I've come to love. Don't come here with high expectations. It's a simple diner. But it stands our because of it's friendly and talkative staff, it's large menu, and it's quick service. Sometimes during busier parts of the week (weekend mornings), the wait time can be a little longer. But it's usually pretty quick. And as far as I can tell, they are open 24/7. They only take cash. But they have an ATM now (they didn't used to). I usually get the party melt on rye, with hash browns on the side. The burgers are also good. And you can't go wrong with any of the breakfast options, either.
(4)Francesca H.
There food tastes like plastic and there costomer service is horrible. I went to this resturant looking for some good breakfast food but I got my eggs burnt as well as the toast. The drink they gave me was flat. I couldn't believe it. I told them about my food and they just said too bad.
(1)C B.
We go every Sunday morning. This is what a greasy spoon diner is supposed to be, a side of attitude with your eggs and hash browns. Makes you feel like family.
(5)Emily J.
I give this place 5 stars because it is as good as it gets if you are looking for good old fashion Southern comfort diner food. The place is tiny and old but got at "A" in their most current health inspection, as they proudly display in their front window. The food so darn good and everything on the menu is prepared by one of the people who run the place. The entire restaurant is run by Hadley and Lauren, sisters who do both the serving and cooking. They dish up more than diner classics here, these two girls have a running commentary between themselves and the customers, most of whom are regulars. Get the waffle and you have got to try the biscuits. They are set on the grill that cooks everything else so they soak up the flavors of bacon and sausage. The hash browns are some of the best I've had in a while. Oh, and you can get a breakfast for two for $12. Unheard of, right? But beware it is CASH ONLY at Barbara's, so be prepared. If you are looking for fine white tablecloths and overpriced food this place isn't for you. But if you like great old fashioned cooking and great company, go on into Barbara Lee's.
(5)William D.
This is a Waffle House without the waffles.
(2)Eric W.
This place is open 24 hours which is great if you're leaving the Frankfort rd area and ready for you 4th meal. The food is greasy but good. The only bad thing is this place only accepts cash.
(4)Liz D.
We wanted an affordable, solid place for brunch and found it at Barbara Lee's. You don't see this type of diner very often anymore- the place where customers are regulars and everyone knows everyone else. Service is quick and food was great. There's nothing too special about the menu- you have your standard breakfast offerings. We got the thick waffle, biscuits and gravy and an omelette with sausage, bacon and mushrooms with hashbrowns. Everything was cooked perfectly. The flavors were nothing out of the ordinary, but still solid. I mean, it's just everything you would expect in a breakfast. Nothing fancy, just some good meat, potatoes, biscuits, etc. The hashbrowns were my favorite part, though. Pay with cash and leave full and happy!
(4)J V.
The atmosphere of Barbara Lee's is on point if you like waiting an hour and half for your meal. Honestly I would much rather go to Denny's down the street. At least you know that when you order biscuits and gravy at Denny's you don't have to wait an hour and a half to eat.

I've lived in this area for almost 15 years. For 10 of those years, I thought this place was a front for either drug dealers or the mafia, because sometimes there's no one there, and sometimes it's packed. But then, I swallowed my fear and went inside. MAN OH MAN. Southern Sunday Breakfast is about as much food as a human should be allowed to eat in one sitting. My one complaint is that the gravy is not sausage gravy, but it's still good. Word of caution, they only take cash. This is a nice old roadside greasy spoon, so don't expect a country club brunch. Actually, I'd prefer this to a country club brunch.
(4)Tom B.
Best breakfast I have had in a restaurant in many years. Two plates full in one order. Biscuits and gravy fill an entire plate. If you don't like a big, full breakfast this isn't the place for you. Service was a bit slow on coffee refills, but otherwise, simply great!
(4)Raad S.
Super hilarious staff that have absolutely no separation between "work talk" and "customer talk." They will bring you into their conversation. And it's amazing. Positive, upbeat vibe, nasty southern greasy breakfast. What else could you want from a little joint like this?
(5)Ann R.
We were in Louisville on a Monday looking for breakfast. We had scrambled eggs and a pecan waffle.(2 orders) Bill was over $15.00 This would have been a bargain if the food had any flavor. This was not the case. Just not good.
(1)Adam C.
If you want a basic breakfast served fast by a friendly staff, this is your place. It is a little scary when you walk in, I have been to similar places in other cities and the food matches the first impression. I wish the place was a little cleaner and more presentable, when you look into the kitchen you should not have doubts about ordering food. Nothing some cleaning, paint, and minor updates wouldn't fix. I had 20 minutes before work to grab some food, took a seat at the bar, ordered and had my food in 5 minutes. I got eggs, bacon, ham, hash browns, and biscuits and gravy. All were as expected, nothing great but good basic breakfast. I always get biscuits and gravy, as this is usually a good sign of the food quality. They were ok, not great, similar to any fast food place. Bottom line, if you ever need a quick breakfast or just don't feel like cooking bacon and eggs, this is you place. Super Chef is across the street if you are looking for something more than the basics.
(3)Lilly W.
Cash is king for the jute box & to square up on the food. Great diner atmosphere with our late night order taken right from the galley kitchen as the cook leaned in to the booth to pour fresh brewed defcafe. When she had all her notes taken it was "thank-ya-Babe`" Barbara Lee's is a must to cap off that craving for bacon, syrup, onion hash browns, all before taking Cinderella home!
