My family has been going to Zuni's probably since they opened. Definitely for over 20 years. And even now, my parents live totally across town, and still come back for his cakes. Oddly enough, when I visit Lexington, and go to Zuni's with my dad, they still recognize me. First of all, his baguettes are a little different from traditional baguettes. They're not very crusty, instead they are very light, with soft white bread inside, and a golden crust, that is more crispy than crunchy. They make really stellar sandwiches. The baguettes *might* keep a day if you don't cut them, but if you cut one, it will be stale the next day. The stale leftovers make great breadcrumbs. His cakes are wonderful! Our family's standby is the troposienne, a heart-shaped cake filled with custard. His fruit tarts and chocolate cakes have also always gone over well. As for his small pastries, my favorites are his meringues, the coffee cake, and the opera cake. They also have a cafe next-door to the bakery. It's french-style bistro food, very light and very fresh. It's not a big cafe, though, less than 20 tables, so there's a chance there won't be a table open right away if you get there for lunch. If you need to kill time, they also have a wine shop across the street. It's not a discount place, so don't go looking for a bargain, but they stock a broad selection of wines, a lot of interesting things you won't find at the Liquor Barn, and they are very helpful if you need advice.
