Eh. The sushi was ok - I prefer when something in the roll is 'fried' that it's warm and freshly friend. I also noticed that they STRONGLY catered to the locals. Our food took 2x as long as everyone else's. If the most adorable man of all time, aka the sushi chef, hadn't come over to be sweet and funny I would not only have given them one star but I would have gone with zero tip. And I almost never do that

Solid sushi, great menu and reasonable prices. Kinda smelly and glad I only do take it there.

Great food and even better service. We have been going here for years and consistency is the key word for these folks---its always good. Grilling anything on the hot stone is family fun

AS much as it pains me, I have to give this place a 3. Let me start out by saying that Kobe used to be my neighborhood sushi place. We lived over at Beaumont Farms (see review) and so was within walkign distance. Needless to say, we went there quite quite often. First off, the rolls. the rolls are very creative and imaginative and are the crown jewels of their menu. So if you like varied rolls that probably aren't traditional japanese, then add a star to this review. The service.....well, it's good. We got to know everyone there and they really are very friendly. But that doesn't mean they are always good. The order gets screwed up at least once every time we are there. And they are always so nice and friendly....maybe a little overly friendly. I don't go there to talk to them, I go there to eat sushi and talk to my friends/loved ones. BUT, I can be a bit anti-social. So if you like friendly and personable staff, add a star to this rating. The namesake . Eh, it's a nice cut of steak that you cook on a very hot volcanic stone at yoru table. If you are a control freak and want to cook your own steak to the exact level of doneness you require, then this is for you....orrrrr you could have just stayed at home and done it for cheaper. :) Finally, the sushi, and this is what puts it in the 3 star rating.....it's not very good. I mean, it's OK, thats why it gets a 3 out of 5...but it's not the best. And this is what kills me, how do you say that to the nice people when they come by and ask how the sushi is? I almost wish that they were less friendly so I wouldn't feel bad about lying about their food. So anyway, the take home is that this is a really good place for rolls, you could do better on the sushi, and the service is friendly if maybe not a bit TOO friendly. Take that how you will and enjoy. -addendum: 01/2015 Closed and now a different sushi place

Worst sushi ever! Fake crab fishy smelling fish Blah! Rice was at least 2 days old ... I felt sick! I think people that ate fish here and said it was great .. Would not know fish from chicken. The most expensive roll was ordered and I asked why is there fake crab for the price I should have real crab... Response was...you won't find real crab at any sushi place here! Wrong!! The school does!

Great sushi rolls. Family owned and run. Tempura is very good. Not for sushi snobs.

If I had to rate this place strictly on food, I'd give it three stars. But the attentive and sweet (owner?) lady who waited our table went the extra mile in every way. She was thoughtful to the extent that I would lose sleep at night if I only gave such a sweet woman 3 stars. Her level of service DEFINITELY put this place in "yay, I'm a fan" territory. So why the three stars for food? The sushi was very badly made, raggedly cut fish, poorly formed nigiri, unraveling maki. I am suspicious that perhaps the regular sushi dude was out, because this was pretty amateurish stuff. Now, let me say, Kobe has an extensive specialty roll menu. I don't, um, roll that way. I like nigiri and sashimi or a really traditional maki. So if you're a fan of funky rolls, you'll enjoy their extensive menu, it's huge and lists some really unique rolls I've never heard of before. We had agedashi tofu as an appetizer, and it was excellent. Not soggy or greasy, but perfectly fried tofu and just the right amount of bonito and broth. Loved it. The "Japanese Springroll" is actually a classic Chinese-American style eggroll. Total misnomer aside, it's probably the best egg roll in Lexington. I don't know if they're making it from scratch or sourcing it from some factory of awesome, but it was straight up tasty. Just nothing like a spring roll. Here's another contentious point. The tempura. They serve up really yummy batter fried vegetables here in little plastic red-mesh baskets no less (LJS anyone?). It was just kind of weird, tasty, but weird. Flavor more like "Fish Fry!" than "Tempura." If that makes any sense. More Occident than Orient. So where did the bonus 4th star come from? Our waitress, who seemed owner-like in her attentiveness, doted on us like crazy. She overheard one of us was having a birthday (which was only casually mentioned, most definitely not one of those, drop a hint and angle for a free dessert things...) and brought out some green tea mochi after our meal. How sweet is that? I mean, truly, she had to have been hanging on our every word to pick up on that fact. When we were packing up the leftovers, she noticed my grandma about to pour the tempura dipping sauce into one of the compartments of her Styrofoam box, and she virtually swooped down and grabbed it from her, disappearing to put it in a travel-safe lidded container. Super thoughtful!! So, being the nit picky Japanese food purist that I am, I wouldn't come here for sushi or tempura. (I used to live in Japan, so cut me some slack.) But, if you are just into tasty pan-Asian cuisine, then you'll be very happy here. None of us had the stone grill items, so I feel kind of bad reviewing a place without having even tried their specialty item. I mean, it must be of pretty superlative quality for them to name the restaurant after it. I would love to come back and give this item a try.

Good for some creative house rolls and the uniqueness of grilling on a very hot stone at your table. We also found the service to be cheery, prompt and I would even call it entertaining and comfy, of course we were very early for dinner service, so it was quiet and we got to hang out with "Alex" for some fun conversation between bites. Most of the comments from others here, good and not-so-good should be taken as valuable based on my one experience years ago and one this evening with my wife. We dropped in today for a somewhat early dinner at about 4:30 since we had not eaten lunch. I had tried Kobe years ago and for reasons unknown, was not impressed enough to remember a whole lot, this was also before I had developed my sushi palate from nil to one that thinks it can appreciate good sushi. So I thought it deserved a fresh visit. We started off with 2 of the specialty rolls based on my wife's description-driven selections (1 "Michelle" and 1 "Cindy") and 1 order of Hamachi nigiri to satisfy my desire to just taste some good fish. The rolls were very tasty, fresh and alone are enough to make me want to go back to Kobe in the future. The only fault I could note was that construction could have been better on one of the rolls -- it was a bit more work to keep together than a roll should be. The Hamachi nigiri was good but not great. Form on the rice was a little wet and loose, and the hamachi itself was a little less firm and lacking in the sweet clean taste that good fresh hamachi can have, if you are lucky and most likely not if you are in Kentucky. Still I would have this again given the choices available, so do understand that I am not saying it was bad, again good, but not great. After whetting our appetites with the above, we decided to share an order of the "surf and turf" stone grill offering. The fish for the evening was salmon, I asked if it was Atlantic (farmed) or Alaskan (wild), hoping that it would be Alaskan. Nope, Atlantic, oh well. The experience is nice, grilling, or in our case just searing and warming slices from pieces of meat at our table, on a very hot stone. But is it worth the price? I think not. If they spent a few more bucks on local grass-fed beef and wild Alaskan salmon, I would come back, probably pay a few more bucks but I would sing praises for featuring these superior products in the unique experience. However, the fillet of beef was good, as was the salmon, so I was not disappointed, I am just not impressed enough by these stone grill offerings themselves to justify paying the price again, even if the come with wonderfully friendly service and a searing hot stone at my table.

Nice people, but bad food. I worked at sushi restaurant before as a sushi chef. The quality of sushi is that of Kroger brand. I was hoping that they would make great udon at least, but no. It was very disappointing. Price is slightly higher than other places. Bad restaurant location.

In from out of town. I saw 3 regulars come in while I ate. To me, that's a true testament to a great place. The sushi was good and the owners are fantastic!!!

My wife and I moved from Chicago to Kentucky three years ago and have been looking for a go-to sushi place in Lexington. Last weekend we finally found it: Zen Sushi. It's in a good location right next to Azur in Beaumont. We went to Zen for lunch last Saturday and again today. The wait staff was extremely attentive and friendly both times. The restaurant itself is clean and nicely decorated. The owner brought out our food himself and chatted with us for a few minutes. He told us he opened in December 2014. So ignore any reviews before then. Our meals were delicious each time. The chef prepares it out in the open. Great presentation. The fish was extremely fresh. The menu has a good variety of sashimi, sushi and rolls. It's not the cheapest sushi in Lexington, but it's definitely the best. Five stars.

My husband and I loved this place. Really excellent service and food. The owner is very educated on wine and has tastings with recommended food pairings on Monday and Tuesday nights. I had the Beaumont roll and substituted the soft shell crab for the prawn. It was superb. We will be back! On a Monday or Wednesday!!!

I am sorry to say that the owners have decided to retire and sold the store. Gone are the days when I could call and say, "Stuart and Phil are on the way" and two Speedy Lunch specials were waiting for us. Here is a Sake toast to Alex and the sweet ladies, you will be missed.

Seriously horrible sushi. A colleague at work, who has visited Japan for work for months at a time over the last several years, had recommended this restaurant as one of his favorites. Taking his advice then seemed like a good bet, Unfortunately it was a losing bet. A friend and I went after work a few weeks ago. We sort of suspected that it might not be great when we showed up at (approximately) 6:00 p.m. and we were the ONLY two people in the restaurant. Still, we just thought that perhaps we were just a little early and it would get busier....it never did. We ordered two rolls each. When they came out, they were tasteless, very small and, to quote my friend, "looked like they had been put together by an amateur." He was right. If I had decided to try and make sushi at home and was just starting out, I think that my sad and pathetic attempts would closely mirror this very bad sushi. As if that were not bad enough, each of the rolls was EXTREMELY overpriced at between $12 - $14.00 a piece. We will, of course, never return. I would discourage anyone else from bothering either.

I was in town visiting relatives and decided to stop by for dinner last Thursday. Lucky we picked this place, I'm a big fan of the sushi. Our favorites for the evening were the bloodhorse roll, spicy tuna roll and the tuna tataki. The bloodhorse roll (fried shrimp, crab meat on top with a spicy sauce) was my personal favorite. The waiters were very friendly and ensured we enjoyed our meal. Overall we had tasty food, great service and a fun evening. I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in the area.

Ever since moving to Lexington, I've been longing for decent sushi. I finally found it at Zen Sushi. The sashimi was extremely fresh, flavorful, and cut perfectly. I bucked my usual trend of avoiding rolls and ordered the Ninja roll; it was very simple (roe and three types of fish) but exquisitely prepared with just enough rice to give the roll form. They also treated us to a tasty layered mango dessert and sliced pineapple. Beyond the food, the staff was very attentive and friendly. We'll be returning again!

This is average sushi at best. The decor and ambiance leave much to be desired. Seems like it might be a decent place for a quick lunch, but skip this place for dinnertime sushi.

Great Service and a fun place to try. I sat at the sushi bar and had fun just reading through their list of house rolls. I had the Preston (yellow tail & crab with spicy tuna on top) and Richard (shrimp, spicy crab and crunchy inside with crab on top). Both were solid. There are tons of choices, but it didn't seem as if there were very many fishes to try. I'm guessing that it's hard to get good sushi grade fish in Lexington. I plan to hit it again the next time I'm in town.
