Consistently good Neapolitan-style pizza. I usually get the margherita pizza, smashed. Toppings are delightfully light, and the sauce has a nice kick. Their house salad is one of the best salads in town in my opinion: mixed greens, walnuts, shaved parmigiano, red onions and is perfectly (lightly) dressed with vinaigrette. Yum! I have recently discovered the tomato-basil soup (bisque) with fire-roasted chicken. Delicious. Sheet music bread accompanies the soup and salad and is usually warm, soft and delicious. A friend tried the blackened chicken sandwich yesterday and allowed me to have a bite. It was very good. This is what I call an upscale, fast food restaurant. You order and pay at the counter, and grab your own drinks and utensils. When your buzzer goes off, you retrieve your tray at the counter. Real silverware and plates are used, which beat the heck out of plastic utensils and paper wrappers from an experience and environmentally-friendly standpoint. The place always appears clean -- tables are promptly wiped down and there aren't napkins, crumbs, etc. on the floor. While you are technically supposed to place your own tray and uneaten food in a designated spot when you are finished, a dining room attendant will almost always offer to clear your table before you have the opportunity to do it yourself. The restaurant has a contemporary, casual look and feel.

I've never seen a smiling face that wasn't beautiful. I've eaten pizza on a regular basis for as long as I can remember. I love pizza. However, over the last few years, I've eaten it less and less. Perhaps, it's carbs overload. Or, cheese fatigue. Or, the one-dimensionality of many chain pizzas. Anyway, that may change after eating at Smashing Tomato recently in Lexington, Kentucky. I was blown away by the fresh taste and explosive pizza flavors at Smashing Tomato. Smashing makes a Neapolitan style pizza which features: Thin crust made of a special high protein dough A marble slab on which the dough is formed Emphases on lighter chesses (some pizzas don't include cheese) Fresh ingredients indigenous to the area where the Neapolitan Pizza originates A special brick oven that generates heat up to 800 degrees F And wraps flames upwards around the top of the oven A special technique in flash cooking the pizza in the oven The pizza chef, just before taking the pizza out of the oven, lifts the pizza up to kiss the flames dancing on top of the oven, which carmelizes the crust and ingredients and intensifies their flavor. I had a Margherita Pizza with fresh basil and imported buffalo mozzarella cheese with half Neopolitan Sauce and half Smashed Arrabiata Sauce (which is bit spicy) along with a salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette. The pizza was thin, light, and full of flavor. They use olive oil on the pizza, which makes it pliable so you can eat it like the Neapolitans do, "a libretto", folded like a book. The salad was cool, crisp, and fresh and the dressing a balsamic with a playful bite - a great complement to the hot, tangy, and intense flavors in the pizza. Grazie, Smashing Tomato, grazie mille, for rekindling my love of pizza and putting a pizza smile back on my face. La vitae e bella (life is beautiful)

It was a great place to stop when traveling. Close to highway, fast service, excellent pizza and salad, reasonably priced. It felt more like a sit-down restaurant than other quick stops.

Fantastic Place for Lunch. Their spicy marinara is awesome. I always get the slice of pep pizza and caesar at lunch. Love this place. Wood grilled pizza is awesome

Was it the best pizza I've ever had? No. It kind of reminded me of like Noodles and Company but for pizza. We ended up paying way more than we expected. Especially since it was listed as $ on Yelp. Spent almost $80 on 4 of us. We each got a pizza and shared with each other. I liked that the pizza was cooked in a brick oven, however, this pizza crust had a slight burnt taste to it. The Chicken BBQ pizza was one of the better pizzas we got and I would have to say that would be the only one I would get if I ever returned. We got the free dessert for checking in, which was nice. Overall, I was looking for something unique while I was traveling and this felt very much like a chain (even though it's supposedly not according to the workers). The messed up the order of one of the people I was with and seemed irritated by this and threw something together in response. All in all, if I was in the area again, I probably wouldn't return.

If you want good pizza in a hurry this is the place to come. It is so good and fresh. This isn't typical pizza joint pizza. This is as close to an authentic fire grilled as you can get in this area. They have a lunch combo where you can get a 6 inch pizza and a salad for around $7. My food was done so quickly and it was delicious!

Nothing fancy, kinda fast foodish lookin place, but the pie was good and it came out super fast!

Some of the best Neapolitan pizza in the U.S. 00 flour, DOP San Marzano's, Buffalo Mozzarella--all wood fired. You want better? You have to go to Napoli. Been eating here years. Quality always high. For first timers it's VERY thin crust and the sausage is spicy. Don't miss this place.

Brick oven pizza, which I really like. As expected, the crust was awesome and was easily 4-5 stars. The toppings were kind of sparse, which brings me back to a 3. Could have just been the type of pizza I tried, so I would be willing to try again.

The line is shorter at this place than the one close to the mall. I like their Caesar salad and Italiano pizza! Their anchovies are little too salty for my liking... But I totally recommend this place!

A quaint contemporary pizza joint, Smashing Tomato's menu is a tad confusing for the first timer. However, the staff can quickly guide you options. One being the smashing sauce which is a bolder, spicer sauce. If you go for the lunch, you can't go wrong with the special: small 4 slice pizza with a salad and fountain drink for under $7. Get an extra plate, pour some olive oil, grind in some black pepper, sprinkle on some cracked red pepper, and ask the staff for a small container of Parmesan cheese. Mix it all together for some "Italian butter." Evening dining provides for larger portions of salad and the pizza is just as good. They also have sweet tea! Great lunch place or even better for meeting friends or a date night.

Being a typical american who likes my toppings piled to the ceiling and enough cheese to stop my heart mid slice, I was reluctant to try this after reading some of the other reviews. But, i'm always in search of unique food... the positive reviews + the fact that it was "kid's night" convinced me to take the risk / my family to Smashing Tomato while in Lexington. I had the wood-fired artichoke dip and a 12" quattro formaggi + peperoncini.... BLAM!!! The "smashed" sauce on the pizza was delectable! That coupled with the peperoncini I added packed just the right amount of heat to give the pizza a pleasant kick. The wood-fired dough lived up to the hype as well! I'm glad I had the insight to order the excellent artichoke dip too. It was a nice addition to dip my crust in after the bread was gone + it provided that extra cheese that I desire when getting pizza. My wife had a lasagna... which was real good + meatless. The Kids had bambinos (lil' personal pizzas)... on Monday "kid's night", they were just 1.99 + their drinks were FREE! What a tasty / affordable meal! I highly recommend it! that's my word.

The spicy sauce is very good. The pizza is always good and fast. I do a take out mostly, enjoy a glass of wine while I wait. Then bring a favorite dinner for my husband.

Haters gonna hate.. I love this place! We go almost every week and always get the same thing: dinner manager's special with an original chopped salad and a margherita pizza smashed and extra wet. It never disappoints! It is the perfect amount of food for two of us and, since we get 2 waters, it always comes to $12 and some change. What a steal! Pro tip: Make sure you get a frequent diner punch card for a free drink, dessert, and even a free pizza after your 10th visit!

Gotta say this place makes pretty tasty pizza! Not the best pizza I have ever had but very good! They have two types of sauce - a regular which is very tasty and a chunky which was a little spicy for my personal taste but had a great flavour. The base is traditional italian and pizza oven baked resulting in a thin, stretchy delicious base which maintains its structure to keep the toppings on top! Very good pizza place but not 5 stars for me.

Pretty good wood fired pizza. I was pleasantly surprised when I went here for lunch to receive a really good Naples style pizza. Soft and chewy crust with a little bit of blistering. They have a nice lunch special, pick a soup or salad and a six inch pizza for one price. I got the pizza of the day, the Italian, and a caesar salad. $7.41 total. Quite a bargain. The pizza had Sausage pepperoni and Kalamata olives. It was pretty tasty. I added some crushed pepper and headed off to the patio. Be warned, the red pepper has a bite. It is not the faded dull mostly tasteless stuff you get at most pizza places. I will definitely come back. They have a variety of pizzas that I look forward to trying.

I should've been more suspicious when I called in an order and they said my pizza would be ready in 5 minutes. We were getting it to eat on the road and within 5 minutes of leaving, it was cool and soggy. The toppings were OK but I might have enjoyed the roasted garlic more if it wasn't whole cloves that weren't cooked through. I think the crust would have been good if it were fresh. The drink choices were uninspired. I ate here once before and it was better but never great.

The lunch special is my favorite local lunch. You can't beat getting a pizza and salad, all made with good quality, fresh ingredients for $6.95.

I was in the area for business and stopped here for dinner. I got a 6" pizza with their spicy sauce, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella and blackened chicken. The flavors were great and super fresh however the crust was seriously lacking. It was soggy in the middle and even the outside crust didn't have a nice crunch to it. I'm used to Chicago and NY/NJ pizza so maybe I'm a little harsh with my review of the crust.

Such a friendly staff. I walked in for my first time, but sure what to expect and the staff was beyond helpful and friendly. They had me smiling from the start, then I had the pizza, which was great. Very pleased with my experience and would highly recommend.

I had the Quattro Formaggi and Lemon Bar. Both were delicious. The staff was friendly and informative. The restaurant looked nice, but I got mine to go. Pizza is my favorite food so when I go to a new city I always try the local pizza spot. This one hit the spot.

I appreciate the free pizza coupon the owner gave us and that it only took us a year to redeem. I thought it was a pretty decent 12 inch pizza with roasted garlic and cheese and sun dried tomato. I took it to go and my kids ate most of it.

I love eating at Smashing Tomato. It is a great place to eat when you aren't looking for upscale but don't want fast food. The service has always been prompt and the pizzas are great. If you are looking for traditional American style pizzas this is not the place for you. The pizzas are very thin crust, wood fired, very traditional Italian style. Usually my wife and I split two pizzas and wine for less than $30. Two thumbs up from us!

This is authentic Italian pizza! If you like a little spice to it, ask for extra smash sauce. I eat there regularly and love it.

  • Jerome F.

This is a good place to eat as long as you only get the smashed sauce on everything you order. The lunch specials are very good. I have yet to have anything bad from this place and recommend it to all for lunch at least once.

Saturday was my first experience with Smashing Tomato. I've heard good things about them from various people and I wanted something different from our usual places. I wasn't expecting a fast food style restaurant. Walking in, I would've guessed it was a sit down type restaurant but you order at the counter and take a buzzer. We got a pepperoni pizza + salad for $11.95 + cost of drinks. Really that can't be beat! Our pizza had a nice crust; thin like I like it and the salad had a nice vinaigrette on it which I also love. Given the fact that it's a fast food style restaurant I expected fast food quality but it was actually really good! And for ~$15 we had a nice meal that is cheaper than some fast food restaurant we could've eaten at and we didn't hate ourselves for eating right after.

I think that the Smashed style pizza here is simply the best pizza in Lexington. The tomato soup is the best in the world, the salads are delicious and one of a kind. The biggest reason my friends and I love Smashing Tomato is the high quality service and friendly staff that cannot be duplicated at restaurants that charge ten times the amount we spend at Smashing Tomato.

I love this place. I go on a semi-weekly basis on the weekends and always get the managers' special, which includes a pizza and a huge salad for about $12. This easily feeds two people. I always get my pizza with the smashed sauce and ask for it wet. I have been here many, many times, and I have never once had a disappointing meal. The food is delicious every time, and depending on who is doing the actual baking, the pizza is a little different everytime too. The staff is always nice and courteous and the location itself is always clean and welcoming. I'm not very big on frequenting the same place over and over and over again for an extended period of time, but I don't see myself giving up on this place anytime soon.

Food was okay but their establishment has been blocked by my debit card company. I tried to use my Visa branded debit card there and it would not go through. The cashier told me they have problems with cards from my credit union and asked me for a different payment card or cash. Later that day, my card company called me and said that I needed to verify my transactions since this restaurant was on their blocked list. I cannot fathom how someone who owns a business like this would allow this to happen. The cashiers statement was clear that this is NOT A NEW issue. I do not know why this place is blocked, but I would not patron any business that is blocked like this.

Great Food! Hubby & I both purchased a calzone for lunch and we should have shared, because they are large, but very delicious!

Everything at Smashing Tomato is good, but their Original Chopped Salad is just perfection! It's field greens with shaved Parmesan, walnuts, slightly pickled red onions with a balsamic dressing. It's served with their sea salted music bread and you can add on blackened chicken if you like. The salad doesn't sound much by itself (doesn't have all the interesting toppings / combinations we come to think of as a good salad), but it's just simple perfection. I don't even know why I like it so much! The blend of flavors is just perfect! I'm so sad I live 2 hours away or I would be eating this every day! I have actually been known to get two salads (no chicken) and that's my meal! Love, LOVE, LOVE!! it

First of all when you enter this restaurant there is a rack of hardwood opposite the front door. The words wood fired pizza and kissed by flame are emblazoned in a number of places. The first time I went my pizza was very hot around the edges and soggy and tepid in the center. I found this strange as I have had wood fired pizza in several places and it is blazing hot and evenly hot all over. It also tasted of wood smoke and the restaurants I was in smelled of smoke. I went again and got a pizza that was very hot around the edge and tepid in the center. I began to watch the cooking of the pizza. On the right side of the oven, and off center is a row of gas flames. On the left there appears to be an angled piece of wood surrounded by "ashes". The "wood never changed shape, the ashes didn't move. I never saw anyone put in wood or remove ashes. In the other wood burning oven situations I observed, the wood is under the cooking platform and they are at least about 500 degrees. The cooker put the pizzas in moved it to one flame side, set it in the center and moved it to the to the left side. This flame kissed the edges and didn't really do much for the center. Wonder if other folks have observed this operation and what you think. No wood smoke taste and never saw any wood being put in or movement of the" logs" in the oven. The taste of the pizza was adequate, but very sparse toppings for the dough it cost. Not a fan of this restaurant just from a cost and value standpoint.

We were hungry for pizza and open to something different. Thank you Yelp for helping us find Smashing Tomato. We were able to get the dinner special for two (pizza and salad) plus a soft drink for only $15 and change. Made to order, fast food concept. Great food. Great value. We will definitely be back the next time our travels take us through Lexington.

I LOVE this place -- I actually had to start coming here by myself, because my husband got sick of eating here. I agree with Lee; I think it's simply the best pizza there is in Lexington. All the ingredients are fresh (basil, fresh mozzarella, etc), they use the special double zero flour, and everything is wood fired -- perfection.
