I really like their creme filled donuts and almond croissants. The creme is not super sweet which is how I like it. My boyfriend is partial to their chocolate croissants, they and so buttery and rich.
(4)Rob R.
I make delicious biscuits and gravy, but this place might make better. Their biscuits are great. Their croissants are better. And their other pastries are best. Today, my favorite donuts are the glazed long johns. Yesterday, my favorite were the cinnamon rolls. Tomorrow's favorite will be whatever I order. Seriously, this place is not overrated. You'll brag that you tried it. Free wi-fi. Feel free to ask to share one of the bigger tables if you find that the smaller tables are taken. I've never had a problem sitting down.
(5)Drake E.
The sausage & cheddar biscuits are the best I've ever had. Soft, flaky, buttery biscuits done right and the sausage is flavorful. Greasy, fatty and a little small but they will fill you up.

It's simple to me folks, these owners simply don't care. Sorry to say, but I've been here twice, a month apart too because I really wanted this place to be good! But in the end same experience as the first time...Bad service, very confusing, short on help, menu not up-to-date (hadn't had the sandwich for a months says the prep guy, to my reply...then way is it still on the chalk board?) average food, wonderful facility, and way, way over-priced. Sorry we tried Magee's.

I'm giving the custom birthday cakes here 5 stars. They're grown up: chocolate, or vanilla, and real buttercream. I have ordered several and they always make the recipient happy. They run about $25 for a cake that serves 8-10, but it always seems like there's plenty more to go around. Oh, donuts are also good!
(5)Andrew K.
I like the open atmosphere, large windows, and relaxed interior at Magee's. As far as pastries - It's a 5 star place early in the morning, but pastry selection reduces greatly by the afternoon. Free wi-fi is great too. I really wish Magee's would keep a greater selection later on in the day - and stay open through the evening. This could make for an excellent night time study spot!
(3)Gkc L.
Great offerings no doubt but they really need to work on serving customers. The lines get out of control. One person on register when there's two available.
(2)Mark R.
Cake doughnuts are the best here. Had a club sandwich, coke, and chips today for $10.00. The cakes are the best, but I simply don't care for that much frosting. For the Lexington market, the prices on baked goods are too high. But, we are in Lexington, and Magee;s is not part of a chain. I think the original is in Frankfort, so it's something unique in a town that is inundated with colorless chains. You need to stop by at least once if you are on a visit to Lexington.
(4)Andrea T.
Okay, if you want a doughnut, go to Spaldings. I'm not even going to front there. Magee's doughnuts are fine, but Spalding's are just in their own category. However, I give Magee's big ups for their use of buttercream, and as a chocolate super fan, i have to give them stars for the long johns and for these awesome chocolate cake things that are dipped in chocolate and filled with buttercream. I have no idea what they call them. I call them delicious, and really could care less about formal introductions if I'm about to put one in my mouth. So if you like chocolate and Spaldings is closed, or if you've never had a Spaldings doughnut in your mouth (which is truly something you must do before you die), then head over to Magee's. And if you aren't familiar with Lexington, you'll enjoy the neighborhood where it's located too. I also give Magee's props b/c it's a nice place to enjoy your paper, coffee, your sweet (or savory) breakfast of choice, or to surf the internet. After leaving Lex-Vegas, it is amazing to me how few towns or cities have nice, independent businesses that serve nice treats and encourage loitering. I really miss that.

You got carb cravings? They got plenty to satiate that craving for you. What used to be a standard bakery has slowly been converted into a bakery/cafe with an enhanced menu. They now offer omelets, breakfast and lunch sandwiches in addition to pastry. I haven't had a chance to try a variety of the sandwiches but I can tell you that the country ham biscuit sandwich with egg and cheese is really delicious. Who knew a tiny biscuit sandwich can fill you up so fast?!? I haven't had their donuts in a while but I remember them to be decent (not the best in town) when we used to order them for early morning meetings. For that reason, most of my Magee's experience has been purely take-out but recently I started to stop by for a sit-down breakfast. Now, I might be the first person to say this but when I walk into this place, all I smell is cheap sweet icing. It's a bit over powering, especially when I'm trying to indulge on a savory/salty goodness of a country ham biscuit sandwich! I agree with others that menu signage needs a bit of help. If you go by the register and you are a bit unsure about what the menu says, your questions might not be answered in the nicest way by staff behind the register. They are definitely trying to get your order in quickly and move on to the next customer. But I should emphasize that nobody is truly rude here; they are just equipped with the ideal customer service skills. On a recent visit, I got my eye on a croissant standing behind the register without any pricing on it. It had the perfect "French brown" color that a good French croissant has. However, the pretty looking croissant wasn't baked all the way through and what was even harder to digest was the fact that I paid more than $3 for that sucker! Thankfully now I know what not to order here but the experience has been decent enough that I would go back for another biscuit sandwich or even for lunch!
(3)Justin S.
One of the only places that makes me wish I lived downtown. It's a bakery with the chocolate frosting to satiate even the sweetest of teeth, but don't sleep on their breakfast sandwiches! They are huge and for a great price!
(5)Paul R.
I've yet to find a cream horn as good as MaGee's makes. Since I live out of town, I use to ask my mother to bring me a dozen, now I settle for just one Old age, geez ;)
(5)Lisa V.
If I could give zero stars I would. The food is nothing special but the service is horrible. The main problem being the nasty elderly woman with glasses who resembles Frances McDormand. If she isn't present the staff is normal and fine. If she is there, she is rude and the entire staff is rude. I hate paying for bad, rude service especially when the food is mediocre. Avoid. Donuts are better elsewhere in lex. Ask Alton Brown. He recently visited Lex and tried donuts and he didn't bother with Magees.
(1)Kendra P.
I got there cream horns or something that was similar. It was good. The service was some I felt could could have greatly better. It was somewhat inviting. Engaging talk with a lady in front of me about the pastries on the rack while we wait in line. The blonde with tattoos that stop at his elbow act like the lady didn't know where the cups are for her drink. From the she talk clearly she been here before. It's seems he doesn't make effort for their recurring customers to be friendly. When it become my turn I place my turn I took out my card and ask was a bag to put my pastries in. His tone was unwelcoming. I smiled and left once he handed me my receipt. Spalding's is what I would wait for. They are worth it and friendly.
(2)Cherish H.
Glazed donuts. Just do it. Amazing! So fluffy, the dough tastes milky and sweet. A definite must-try. The omelettes are ridiculously fluffy and made to order with whatever you like. The chocolate bar donut is a little too sweet since it is filled with creme. They have 5 kinds of coffee, pancakes, cupcakes, etc. service is good. Yummilicious factor - B+
(4)Robert N.
I'm usually a supporter of local restaurants/bistros/bakeries, but after my second horrible experience at this bakery, I've had enough. After not breaking my 100 dollar bill, they decided to make me give them an "iou" of $5.03. That would've been fine, but they never gave me my bagel even after I paid the 6 dollars that I borrowed from a friend. They did not give me my 97 cents back either. I'm now walking away from this terrible place losing over 2 dollars worth of bagels. If you enjoy mediocre food and horrible service, you will love Magee's bakery.
(1)Michele B.
I've never been particularly blown away by their baked goods, but it's bosses day and I forgot (D'oh!) and I know a lot of people dig Magee's so I thought I would swing by and pick up some pastries. The lady at the register was SUPREMELY rude and distracted. She acted as though she were really put out by dealing with customers. She got the little dude's order in line before me all wrong. And then as I was ordering, she was looking completely in another direction and missed some of my order. I was so ready to peace out of there that I didn't even bother correcting her. As she was putting the pasties in bags for me (I requested separate packaging since they were going to different folks,) she threw them sloppily into these waxy white bags. I reminded her they were to be little gifts to my bosses and she continued her sloppy ways complaining about how she wished she got a bosses day. The lady was older, and should totally know better. This was not some punk teenage angsty worker, she may have been an owner. Anyhoo, it was lame and I won't be back. There are far better places in town.
(2)Jennifer S.
The best chocolate covered donuts you'll ever have! Sometimes they'll even dip them fresh for you!
(5)Philip R.
This could have been exactly the breakfast we were looking for. A home cooked flair with simple, yet satisfying options including a variety of pastries. Unfortunately, the breakfast was poorly executed by a cook who obviously does not like her job. Magee's offers lots of great pastries, plenty of coffee options, and a great looking breakfast and lunch menu. I ordered two eggs over easy, two sausage patties, hashbrowns with cheese, and wheat toast. I got two eggs over medium, two sausage patties, hashbrowns with unmelted cheddar cheese, and untoasted wheat bread. Admittedly, I was hungry and the food still tasted great. My girlfriend got a fantastic veggie omelet that was cooked in way too much grease. So much that it was pooled around the omelet on her plate. Other than that, I think she was pretty satisfied. I think we'll try again, but I hope the cook we encountered this last time is having a better day next time.
(3)Ryan H.
We are huge fans of Magees. My favorite chocolate iced donut in Lexington. We also love the triple threat - 2 meats, eggs and cheese on a croissant. Get there before 10am on Saturdays or expect to wait in line.
(5)Charlie C.
Racist. At least the loud mouthed loser with the pants down to his knees behind the counter. I had been there once and enjoyed the location and the donuts, so I was excited to return with my daughters. I don't know if he thought he was being edgy or funny with his banter but clearly he doesn't appreciate non-white business. I was angry but didn't want to cause a scene in front of my young daughters who wouldn't understand the indignity. The difference between stupidity and ignorance? Stupidity means he is just dumb. Ignorance means he is too dumb to know what he doesn't know.

I really badly wanted to like this place. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful - hardwood floors, big tables you can spread out on, and a huge mural featuring bakers greets you on the wall opposite the front door - but everything else about this bakery is disappointing. I've been here a few times now, always hoping that the last disappointment was a fluke, but, by now, I've sworn the place off. The place's problem, I think, starts with it's menu signage, in that there isn't any. You assume they have donuts, for example, but they don't appear on the menu, so you can't confirm types of donuts or their prices. Ok, sure. Maybe this is the type of place that doesn't have a full menu listed. It has secret menus! You're supposed to be a regular, right?! It's a place that caters to people "in the know." Cool. It's not. The cashier will explain the available food with rolled eyes and a sigh, then you'll be slapped with a giant bill for a donut, sandwich, or bagel you ordered just so you could get out of the giant line and out of sight of the pushy employee. It seems like Magee's could take a few simple steps to improve their store, like printing out a full menu and telling their cashiers to not ask insulted when the customer doesn't know what's being served. They seem totally deaf, though, to these obvious flaws.
(2)Jill M.
Magee's was a great spot for our Sunday brunch! The atmosphere is casual & friendly. The racks of pastries are tantalizing. My bacon and cheese omelet was LOADED with bacon! YUM!!
(5)Kyle E.
Magee's is a wonderful spot in town. Memorable decor, great local coffee, and fantastic baked goods. Retort to the reviewers who find the customer service unappealing: lighten up already. It's a freaking bakery, not a day spa. The staff are lovely folks who have been nothing but wonderful to me on every occasion I've come in, once even just to browse and get a small cup of coffee. For stopping in they gave me a free cinnamon bun the size of my head. The main baker has routinely given out freebies just because he's trying a new recipe and won't sell it 'til he knows it's good--banana muffins, in one case. Lighten up, get a sense of humor, and smile a bit--it'll go a long way.
(5)Jeff N.
Great Lexington bakery! Everything was delicious! My omelette was hot, fresh, and generously filled. It was just slightly overcooked but still tasty. My hash browns could gave been a little crispier, but again, very tasty. The rest of our group enjoyed their food as well and the relaxed atmosphere!
(4)Emily D.
I gave it another try. My opinion has not changed. Magee's is interesting, and you might enjoy a trip to this bakery, but I will never, ever be returning because: The food is only OK. The coffee has been stale/burnt consistently. The prices are crazy high. The service is really, really poor. The waits are long. And there is still absolutely no way to know what they are selling or the prices on any given day. Plus there are several other local bakeries which can fulfill Magee's role like Spaldings and The Great Bagel. Magee's. Never again.
(1)Jeff J.
This is one of Lexington's great, local bakeries. While I prefer the glazed donuts from Spaldings and the atmosphere of North Lime Coffee and Donuts, Magees hands down makes the best chocolate-covered cake donuts. They also make good croissants and usually has a lively crowd and lines on weekends.
(5)Scott P.
I really like their chocolate glazed donuts. The chocolate is real fudge, not "icing". They are really great! We like to say Magee's has "Better Batter" because all their stuff tastes like quality. I also like their bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. Magee's is the real deal. On my top 3 list of favorite bakeries Magee's is #1.
(5)Teal G.
Wow! So good! Fully recommend the chocolate covered donut. The donut itself is perfect and your teeth glide through it exquisitely and the chocolate on top is delicious!
(4)Danielle W.
Give them you're tired, your hungry, your carb starved masses. The velvet rope is only to keep everybody in line due to their excitement to eat these great pastries. People crawl, climb, and scurry to get to this place on Sundays in whatever they slept in last night all the way up to their Sunday best- in droves. You can choose from everything that is pastry up to and including some egg dishes that you will have to wait for but take a number and have a seat because this seating is just like it is at your mom's house. Large kitchen tables scatter the dining room and there are even a few concrete tables outside to sit at- which keeps this dog owner on the way to the dog park very happy to be able to eat with my friend. 4 stars because I haven't liked the coffee anytime that I've gotten it but I am a bit of a coffee-snob. The beans just can't compete with the food and maybe that is why it is so mild. This place is been reviving me post test weekend for 4 years and though I may be biased about the charm of the place and how it has grown due to it a success I will let the food speak for itself- it is phenomenal. Did I mention it's still warm when you get it? That's the great thing about popular places. The goodness is flying off the shelf. Now that they have more workers at least on Sunday I don't have to suffer in line while my stomach turns and growls staring at the pastries. Light crispy flaky croissants with delicious fillings such as chocolate or cheese are always my choice. I love the savory taste of the bread with the light filling. The chocolate is thick and decadent though but compliments the mild coffee without cream beautifully. I have never met Magee (Ma-Gee; NOT MAGGIE!) but if I did I might shake their hand for the delicious goodness that they have brought to me time and time again-or maybe just a simple solid thank you. I hate to say it but I hope it becomes a chain so that I will have it in Louisville. Until next pharmacy school reunion....thanks Magee's. Note: Magee is a family name. None of the owner's are named Magee. And definitely don't ask the sweet little old lady behind the counter for her picture- she isn't related and by her reaction, she apparently is pestered with this a lot. If I were her, I would soak up the spotlight and claim the fame.
(4)Kelsey S.
They have breakfast and lunch food. I've only had breakfast here and it's been great! Their bakery items are also amazing and tempting! Refillable coffee!
(3)Jazz G.
The service was extremely disappointing and the food is average. I am not a regular but you shouldn't treat regular customers any different from new or rare patrons. Some individuals were brought their food directly to the table while I waited and watched them place my food on the counter, sit there for a minute before I initiated to go and request my food. I really like their donuts and have heard good things about their baked goods, but unfortunately I can't see myself returning. I'd rather be greeted with a smile from the family at Spauldings, which have way better donuts and always warm, than waste my time thinking it will be different the next time at Magee's.
(2)Jason S.
Maggee's can fool you, it seems nice at first. Their food is almost better than fast food, but more its equal. I'm sure it costs more though, but you wouldn't know that because there's no menu or prices posted anywhere. People think it's a great place because it's local and trendy. I guess that's their major advantage. I guess you're paying for the name. The seating area is also full of deception. It looks large and accommodating, but then you see that it's filled with people saving tables for their friends or people with their dogs. I can't really comment on the quality of their baked goods except to say that they're definitely the most expensive in the area. Was I too harsh on this local institution? Maybe, but I don't hate the place. I just didn't like it the three or four times I went there. I always hoped it would be better.
(2)Daniel R.
The croissant's and fresh squeezed OJ are what make this my favorite bakery in Lexington. Get there early, because when they sell out, they close up shop. A great place to grab a coffee and read the paper on a weekend morning too.
(5)L T.
We love Magee's! You can tell everyone else does, too, because this place is always crowded. In addition to baked goods, Magee's has a great brunch selection with lots of quiches and breakfast casseroles, but if you go on Sunday, make sure you go before church otherwise they're usually cleaned out afterwards.
(5)Sue B.
My husband is always in search of the best pastry. Magee's now holds that honor because of their fabulous pecan danish. We were on vacation in Lexington for 7 days and my husband frequented this bakery at least 3 times (that I know of). Yum!
(5)Leslia L.
Holy smokes the donuts are good. The chocolate covered long john is unbelievable (as are all the others I have tried).
(5)blue t.
I'm pretty sure the sausage biscuits are what God eats for breakfast.
(5)Rochelle K.
I thought that we'd have to give up on good bagels after leaving the northeast. Low and behold, a great bagel can be had right here in Kentucky. Magee's bagel is chewy and dense just like the real NY deli deal. And let's not even talk about their melt-in-your mouth sinful donuts.
(5)Paige K.
My husband and I love to celebrate a Sunday morning with a croissant from Magee's. Although the croissants are a bit denser than traditional ones, their almond paste in the almond croissant is delectable, and just the right amount. My husband likes the chocolate croissants. On the weekends, they tend to run out by 9ish, so don't delay. Also, I have to say the egg casserole and the quiches tend to be bland, and I do not like their doughnuts, but as far as breakfast pastry, you can't go wrong.
(4)Ernie S.
This place is mediocre at best. Fluffy, somewhat dry donuts is not what this Homer likes. Why head to this place when Spalding is right down the road?
(3)David B.
the doughnuts were pretty amazing. serious. dense and sweet. try the chocolate frosted one with buttercream icing inside. the cupcakes were pretty hard to resist, but we did manage to resist them because we consumed so many doughnuts. the bagels were surprisingly decent (particularly if you're not from ny). the omelette was well seasoned and stuffed, but the egg sandwich was a real disappointment. for some reason, it had some kind of pre-made egg loaf (like a frittata square) that had more in common with an airplane breakfast than something you'd get at an otherwise great bakery. still go. just avoid the egg sandwich.
(3)Kayt B.
Absolutely delicious. The perfect breakfast spot. The cinnamon cake donut is to die for. My other favorite is a baked egg and cheddar biscuit!
(5)Heather P.
It had been years since I'd last given this place a shot. I was never blown away here and I wasn't on my last visit to Magee's either. I'd recently noticed a lot of reviews and photos from here, and we were in the area, so thought I'd give it another shot. I planned on ordering breakfast, but found that the breakfast items offered were extremely limited. Most of their menu items consists of sandwiches. I ordered the club sandwich which was pretty good... I've had better though. My husband ordered the turkey Reuben and it was quite small, especially compared to my sandwich. We split a croissant and it was ok, flaky like I like it. My sandwich was one star and the croissant was another... I can't go much more than that. One pleasant surprise was that the fountain soda was reasonably priced. The cup was a bit small, so on my second trip up for a refill, I looked over behind the counter and I noticed filth. Everything back there was disgusting! I know it's a bakery, and I've been in many bakeries, but this was extreme uncleanliness. Several empty tables sat unbussed and unclean the entire 30 minutes or so that we dined, we wiped down our own and noticed someone else do the same to the table next to us. It was almost as if they wanted you to take your food and leave, that's what most people seemed to do. I don't think I'll be back, but felt the need to warn my fellow Yelpers.
(2)Melissa M.
I had my first visit here over the weekend and was blown away by the bakery items. The Southern Pecan coffee was excellent. There was a huge line. When we got to the front, I saw the baked goods and they were gigantic. My friend got the pumpkin muffin which tasted like fall. I got a chocolate donut. It was so good - just that rich, chocolate taste without a hint of artificial flavor. I will be back.
(5)Josh R.
Still 3 stars. Breakfast is very good, but the elderly lady is very indifferent and almost rude when she helps you. She must be the owner or a relative of the owner. Get your food to go.
(3)Michal S.
This bakery is amazing! The people are very friendly and I had THE best pumpkin muffin I have ever had! Everything is made from scratch and the coffee is great!
(5)John T.
Well worth the wait, and weight! The donuts are so dense and flavorful. The chocolate glaze on top is more like a ganache, so thick and yummy. The omlet was large and enough for sharing. Good thing I don't live here, for it would be hard to stay away. Yum!
(5)Shyanie K.
Stopped here for a quick breakfast. The egg and sausage plates are pretty standard and plain. Nothing fancy here. However the donuts are amazing! Love the plain glazed and the cake donuts. Highly recommend the donuts!
(3)Liz T.
I visited Magee's for the first time in December 2014. I didn't try their famous donuts, breakfast breads and desserts, but there's almost no way any of that could be as delicious as the sandwich they served me. I ordered egg and cheddar on toasted, fresh-baked bread. It was an amazingly satisfying breakfast - so tasty and so filling. So cheap, too! I paid just over $5 for the sandwich and a big cup of coffee.
(5)Natalie S.
Stick with the baked goods - cooked breakfast was not great. Biscuits and gravy were plain bad, hashbrowns were a pile of grease, and everything else was average (especially for the price). But I will say the pumpkin muffin was delish.
(2)Mark E.
I've tried many of the baked goods including the pecan roll, cinnamon rolls, fruit danishes and the biscuit sandwiches. I've always been impressed. We usually pickup a couple pecan rolls to take home. Biscuit sandwiches are just the right mix of crisp and fluffy with great fillings. I haven't tried the breakfasts or lunch sandwiches. The long lines and slow-ish service are one of the biggest problems. I suppose it is due to their success, but it seems like they could expedite the process a bit especially if you are just ordering pre-baked goods rather than something made to order. Lastly, I wish their seating area was a little cleaner. I usually takeaway for that reason. The quality and flavors of their baked goods are the reason to come to Magee's. Try the biscuit sandwich, you wont be disappointed.
(4)Jeremiah A.
It always amazes me how many locals haven't tried this place out. It's a very good bakery with great breakfast treats.
