I've got to tell you about my experience recently at Indi's! First of all, I love Indi's. I have been going there for 30 years, starting at the Indi's on Indian Trail in Louisville. But this last experience has probably sent me on to Richie's instead. I went inside the restaurant to order on a Saturday night, about 11:30 pm. A guy took my order, and then proceeded to give me the most frustrating service of my life. I ordered 30 chicken wings and a dozen potato wedges. After taking my order, he began to wipe a counter. Then he counted the wings out into my food container. Then he proceeeded to re-stock the chicken wings, combining containers, wiping the counter, getting more wings from the kitchen, etc. After at least 5 minutes, he then counted the wedges into my box...then started the restocking thing again with the wedges. My completed order sat on the counter, while he THEN went to the back and came back with a box of napkins. He then, of course, restocked ALL the napkin dispensers, while my food sat there on the counter. After 15 minutes, he took my credit card and tells me he needs to see my ID also. "Uh-oh", I thought, that was a mistake. He takes my card to the back, brings back a mop bucket and mop, and then, finally, swipes my card. After 5 minutes, he gets my receipt and then brings it to me to sign. I have never had such poor service in my life. The drive thru line was long and they were getting their food quickly. I was exceedingly polite while ordering. I never complained while waiting. I can see no reason why this jerk would give me such ridiculous service. And the neighborhood is dangerous at night.

Indi's . . . the REAL Kentucky fried chicken! So, I'm not a fast food person. The fact that I actually ventured through the drive-thru at Indi's is a shocker. I've passed Indi's so many times, but this one day, the chicken clucked to me, and I made a calculated U-turn. The spicy version of the breast is perfect for my hotter-the-better tastebuds, It was succlent and tasty. The potato salad, too was excellent. The sweet potato pie on the menu called out my name loud and clear. I couldn't wait until I arrived home to dive into my lunch. The pie was creamy and not overly seeet, the crust flakey. I even stopped at an Indi's in Louisville last week after my initial discovery. The only thing about Indi's that is fast, was the service. So, Indi's gamely makes my list of "$5.00 lunch gems" in Lexington.

The good: the food, the price, and the food. The bad: the wait time, the parking. The rundown: so I'm writing this off of a couple glasses of wine and some refrigerated leftovers. Their food is great! When it is warm, or scalding hot rather, or when it is cold. I would eat their chicken again and again. I have to say I like that their food only comes in mild or hot, no regular here. Fried chicken the way it is supposed to be. Anywho, their food is fantastic, albeit you have to wait a decent amount for your order to be filled even at lunch time, but it is worth it. The impression: considering this is down the street from where I work, I can say I will start frequenting here, regardless of all those delicious calories that I will be consuming.

Love their wings. I live in Maryland and every time i come to Lex I get their wings. The breading is awesome, not too much. They only come in mild and spicy. I got 50 wings for like $20...what a deal. The potato wedges are awesome too.
(4)Jason B.
I would say Richie's chicken is way better than indi's. The sides here are way way way better and the service is the same as Richies. I wasn't a fan of their original chicken just wasn't crispy it was very juicy don't get me wrong but there wasn't a crispy factor to the chicken. It was cool to visit the original spot where all this started and I will tell you it is very small spot. It is take out only you know just like Richie's and there is no parking pretty much you have four spots to park your car and grab your food as quick as you can but they do have a drive through, two of them. Fried chicken has become a big thing with me since I moved down here in the south and there is no shortage of that around here in Lexington and places like this make me want to travel more more around the state just a fine little hole in the walls like this that have been around for generations and know I can get really good food know matter where I go in the state. If you like this place you need to check out their other location. I'm happy someone at work told me about this place because I enjoy the sides that I had.
(4)Chris C.
As good as it gets when it comes to fried chicken in Kentucky. The chicken here is phenomenal, and half the price what poor sods in Brooklyn are paying for inferior birds. The fried seafood here is good too, if not exceptional, and the sides are quality. Some may be put off by the gritty urban environment (the cashier is shielded by security bars and possibly bulletproof glass) and parking is minimal, but I don't know why people would go anywhere else for fried chicken in Lexington.
(5)Marty P.
The wings are great here. They offer their wings regular or spicy. Get them spicy, it's not that hot. The wings are dry spiced, the heat is in the breading, not tossed in sauce. The wings are what to get. The chicken fingers and "steak nuggets" aren't anything special. If I get sides I get greens and Mac and cheese.
(4)Theresa B.
Seriously, the best fried chicken in Kentucky. Obviously the parking here stinks and the drive-thru can get pretty clogged but it's pretty much worth it. Richie's over on Georgetown Road is the same place, same food, different name. And their parking/drive-thru is a bit better. We love the potato wedges as well. My husband and I will split a 3 piece dinner box, substituting the chicken for all 3 breasts. Oh, and we *love* the spicy. It really sneaks up on you and be warned.... it'll come back at ya the next day but after eating it a couple times, your body grows accustomed to it. But that first time eating the spicy.... YOWZERS! It was super painful the next day. ;-)
(4)Ellie Y.
Best fried chicken in town. People from all over visit Indi's. The service has gotten faster now.
(5)Jason W.
Chicken is so flavorful with a simply perfectly crisp skin. The wedges are heavily peppered, which is surprising at first, but makes them spicy and interesting--you need no condiments to eat these wedges.
(4)Jeremy M.
Average fried chicken wings. A lot of breading on them. The Mac and cheese was a decent pica-dilly style flavor, but the side portion was rather small. My wife ordered the chicken fingers, thinking they were homemade. . .but instead they were small freezer fingers. A big let down for the wait line and high expectations. Don't fall prey to other claims for the "country's best fried chicken". Drive an hour and a half south to Nashville for truly spicy hot chicken.
(2)Pam S.
Service can be slow but on my first visit to LEX, we hit this place up for some late-night, post-brewery chicken and it was perfection. So much so that we stopped through again the next day before some bourbon tours and it was just as tasty. Taste: 5 stars Service: 3 stars
(4)Greg A.
Great place for spicy chicken. Stop by and try their chicken on the bone and the spicy wings. Only one location and the perfect mom and pop experience. There is carry out and drive thru available for convenience. Been there multiple times and always good.
(5)Jason C.
Fast Food??? Not really... don't expect to walk in and walk out with your food in few minutes. I had to wait 20 minutes from the time I got in to the time I left with my food. The person that handles the orders for the walk-in customers also handles the drive-thru orders as well, so whichever method you take, expect to spend some time in line... I went with the 3 pcs dinner box, with wings, greens, mac-n-cheese and also ordered the green beans. You can get the wings hot or regular, I opted for the hot.... the hot wings has a heat that comes at you as you are finishing up the wings... so be warned.... their green beans were excellent, just as it should be and the mixed greens were little bitter, but good.... the mac and cheese was good, even though it wasn't warm. overall, good fried chicken and would definitely come back to this place... though the wait time was little longer then necessary... but hey, they are open until like 3am on some days, so if you are craving for fried chicken, then you know where to go if you are in Lexington area.
(4)Kandice G.
There is typically a long wait to be served, but it is so worth it. The staff is friendly and professional, and the food is excellent!

After living here for years previously, and around when Indi's first came about, this was THE choice place in the 'hood to get spicy fast food with a kick and much variety back n the day! Well..... it still is! I must say that their version of (West Indian) spices will set you ablaze, fa'real....no, fa'real fa'real! I recommend the mild flavored dishes of whatever you order unless your digestive system can handle it....don't believe me....you'll see:-) Indi's has some damn good cobbler and unlike most I prefer the apple over the peach. You can request extra crust too, and I do:-). The menu has everything one could want from mac-n-cheeese, rib-tips, collards (although I don't care for their greens much), chicken, mild, hot and SUPER hot, potato wedges, sweet potatoes, etc etc....but the wings is IT! I like to see that they've lasted as long as they have and there are two or three locations in Lexington, I think Louisville Ky, and OH too. Thats expansion. They are sometimes not the friendliest folk, but I am sure they are dealing with some real interesting people rollin' in daily.... If you want some food with KICK-a$$$ flavor, stop on thru....The prices are reasonable and I think they may offer sweet tea (have never ordered it from here though)

Really good fried chicken and wings served here. They also serve ribs and shrimp as well. I really enjoy the potato wedges as a side. Knows how to handle a rush.

Very good fast food place. Just went there today and the fried chicken tastes fresh. The texture is perfect and the amount of flavor put into every bite is amazing. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes eating fried chicken. FYI: Many people say it is located in the ghetto and I beg to differ. The ghetto is actual further down on the east and west side. The restaurant may have glass separating you from the ordering counter, but it is for precautionary measure. I'm a fan because the chicken is so good! The spices are perfect and the battered skin is crispy but not soggy. The sides are tasty and about what you expect in a chicken place - beans, fries, biscuits. The experience was a little different - the servers are behind bars and that gives the place a rough vibe: but I lived near the restaurant and our neighborhood was working-class and full of good people, so it felt different from my own perception of the neighborhood I lived in. Barring that, we visited often and loved it every time!

Awesome chicken wings for a fair price!. Great for game day. Fried wings w no sauce although there is a spicy wing which is awesome! The rolls are great as well as a plethora of sides. Including my favorite giant spicy fries!

Hands down, this Lexington tradition serves the best fried chicken in the area. Known for its spicy fried chicken and sides, Indi's is excellent. I'm told by a waiter friend that several local caterers use Indi's wings for events. You can either order inside or drive through. The restaurant is in a working class African-American neighborhood next to a gas station on Broadway. I believe this Kentucky chain (there is one in Louisville too) was started by a woman from the Bahamas or the Virgin Islands. Also check out Indi's potato wedges, yams, and sweet tea.
(5)adam C.
Indi's is really good if you're in the mood for fried chicken or fast-food-style soul food. The rib tips are pretty good, the fried chicken is really good, and the potato wedges and the greens are both great. One factor is how long the food has been sitting when you get it. If it's fresh, it is some of the best, but sometimes I think it sits for awhile. Either way, it's quick and easy, and the people are nice.
(4)Chad C.
Indie's Fast Food Restaurant sells by the best wings in town. They also sell fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, potato wedges, mac n cheese, fish, and other random items. All you really need to know is they sell awsome wings. Hot wings and regular wings. Wings Wings Wings. I swear they even deep fry the bag. The stuff is messy and greasy and oh so good. This is just a place to pick up your food either the drive thru or the walk in. There isn't a place to eat here. Even if there were, I don't think you would actually want to stay here and eat. The staff are friendly and quick at dishing out the yummy foods you are ordering. They get people in and out as fast as possible. After writing my review, I want to go there now. If you are in the area, stop on in. So good. HOT WINGS! Enough said.
(4)Brian W.
I have been driving past this place for the past 3 years. I was not sure if I wanted to eat there or not. I had read a lot of reviews and finally took a chance. I regret the last 3 years of my eating life. Best fried chicken I have had in a long time. I had the two piece spicy with macaroni and mashed potatoes. The sides were good. No more than that. But the chicken was great. Decent amount of spice and the meat was juicy. Messy and Good. You cannot tell from the outside but the interior is very clean and up to date. There is nowhere to sit inside so I had to eat in the car. Would probably take home to eat next time. I read a lot of reviews that said the people working there were rude. I understand that. The guy taking my order was not happy to be there mid day on Sunday. On the other hand, the woman who gave me my food was very nice and was doing everything she could to keep up with demand. So they equaled out the service factor in my mind. I am looking forward to eating other things on their menu like the Jack Salmon Sandwich and the wedges. I would eat here a lot if they had seating but I will be back time and time again regardless. Indi's is absolutely worth a try.
