This review is based on my one time visit, and chicken Pad Thai was what I ordered. I'll try to make this one short. It was the only Thai place in town that I hadn't tried. It's on campus, but on a corner and easy to find... As long as you know to look for the awning and steps. It's sort of got a basement feel to it. I think it's been at this location for a while, the decor and atmosphere have an old feel to it, but they do have a 100% listed from the Health inspection. I always go for the Pad Thai on my first venture to a Thai place, so it was no different here. It was garnished with one carrot sliver, and five thin bits of chicken within the pile of noodles. The noodles weren't lacking in flavor, but they were dry... Like the times that I've had Pad Thai warmed up in the microwave the next day. So I added a dash of soy sauce to dampen it up a bit. It was still probably the worst Pad Thai that I've had in Lexington. My husband ordered the chicken cashew something or other, and it too was lacking the amount of chicken that it should've had. The portion was small for a dinner portion. But he seemed to enjoy it. We each had an egg roll prior to our meals, but had we not, I would note that even my portion was smaller than most Pad Thai dinner entrees elsewhere. But it was perfect sized after I consumed scrumptious egg roll. Note to the business: don't be skimpy with the main ingredient, if you want satisfied or returning customers, and turn the tv from Thai tv... at least during March Madness.

This is by far the best Pad Thai I have ever had. I always make sure to stop by for a meal when I am in Lexington.

Don't get takeout! I ordered the ginger beef and rice and when I got home it look like I ordered off the kids menu! I think it was a $10.00 kids dinner. I'm glad I made extra rice to fill up on or I would have to cook dinner after eating this dinner. The food had a good flavor but I feel like I got cheated for the price.

The best part about this restaurant is it's convenient location to the UK campus. That's about it. I think since they know they are so conveniently located they don't particularly try hard in any department- decor, service, food. The service is okay. The staff isn't rude but they aren't going out of their way for their customers either. I think I would put up with it if their food was amazing but it's really not. It's just bland, not particularly flavorful food that happens to be Thai. It's the kind of food you eat because you are hungry and it fills a void. I've been here twice and both times have left me unimpressed. I wouldn't come here again by choice.

here, I ate the worst pai thai in my life. Chopsticks looks dirty. I waited for 30minutes and got a kids meal, had to eat another subway to get full. Service is bad, the waiter looks not happy and charged the tips automatically. the only reason I came here is that it's close to campus. won't come back.

Wasn't impressed because the $13 red curry with duck came out smelling good but only revealed four slim pieces of duck over tasteless red curry and tasteless bamboo. The rice was done right. See the picture I posted, had to stir it up to expose some duck, otherwise it could have made you think I only ordered red curry bamboo.

I have been going here for years & it's one of my favorite places in lex. I've had a bunch of different entrees & all of them have been so great. My favorites are the Pad Thai, Lo Mien, & the fried rice. The location is super convenient because of its proximity to campus & I feel that pricing is super reasonable. The only way it's lacking is that service, but considering it's usually the owner who is the only person serving I always cut him some slack. He is friendly and gets your food out quick.

I'll start off with this is a family owned Thai restaurant. They even grow their own fresh herbs. They are friendly and prompt . They will cook to order . Even when they have a full house of customers, you get a friendly attitude and do not feel rushed. That alone wins points! I'm not one to care for egg rolls, but these are the bomb! I have to have one or two any time I come here. They have a sauce on the table that goes with them. I'm Not sure what it is made of, but it has a honey texture, and really compliments the egg roll . You do Not want to drown it in sauce, but just a little for that little extra pizazz! I highly recommend it. Their pad Thai is the best I've ever had. When I crave pad Thai, no other will do! They have a wonderful mausaum curry, pineapple chicken and eggplant dishes ! I'm sure they have even more wonderful dishes , but I can't seem to get past the above listed dishes. Their menu is a small book with plenty of selections! There's something for everyone. They have a nice selections of meats to chose from ( or no meat at all). It might interest you to know one of the meat selections is duck. Nice selections, but different varieties which makes it hard to chose! I need to mention they also have the best Thai Tea I've ever had . If you enjoy Thai food, this is were you want to go. You'll be glad you did !

Best thai food I have had in the entire state. The yellow curry chicken and seasonal thai pumpkin curry are a flavor party in your mouth. The folks who run this place are also extremely friendly. The location is a little hard to find (its underground) but the food is amazing and busy. Best egg rolls I have also ever had at any asian restaurant period. I'm not sure why they are so good but they are. I highly recommend the yellow curry, masamun curry, panang curry, seasonal thai pumpkin curry, beef salad and chicken satay. The thai iced tea is rich and by far the best I have had anywhere. Reasonably priced. The only drawback I can think of is they are not in Louisville where I live now and do not deliver.

Best Thai restaurant I've found in the USA, period. Highly recommend their chicken pad thai, mussamun curry or panang curry. Portion sizes are unfortunately on the small side. Ambience is probably lacking compared to other Thai places. None of that matters to me. Whenever I am in Lexington I make it a point to come back here for lunch because I think the Thai food is so delicious, authentic and can't be beat.

The best pat about this restaurant is being close to campus. I've frequented Bangkok House for many lunch meetings and everytime I'm underwhelmed. I often feel the food is missing something (spice? salt? not sure) and because of this I feel it is overpriced. You probably won't walk out of here with a check under $10 or $15 unless you're dining vegetarian. The veggie egg rolls are the best thing on the menu.

Good curry, sauce was thin. Service was quick and staff was pleasant. Inexpensive lunch menu.

I haven't tried much Thai food in Lexington, but I really enjoyed this place. We went for lunch, and I asked for my food to be as spicy as they could make it, and for once, a place actually delivered. I'm used to the American version of spicy, which is generally pretty mild, but my Pad Thai had me sweating. The portions were kind of small, and the service wasn't great, but I think I'd definitely go back.

This place is conveniently located next to campus; that is if you're a student living near campus. I've always had a nice experience when eating here. I've ordered take out too. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. I've had both the cashew chicken and the yellow curry with chicken. Both were delicious.

A great place on campus to eat! Quiet (if you come early). Food is so so, but service is fast. I ordered fried tofu and curry shrimp. Both are OK but not great; tiny small portion. Nothing fancy. Price is OK though; you get what you pay for.

I came here several times a few years back and it was not my top favorite Thai place but it was still decent. Sadly, it seems like this place has changed for the worse in the last 2-3 years. On a recent visit, the atmosphere felt completely depressing. May be because I went there on a week night and the place was not packed, but it felt like the owner/staff didn't care much about anything. One of them had a bucket of soapy water and was cleaning tables and chairs right next to us.. Food was so so..I ordered a noodle dish . Taste was ok but the portion of noodles was small and it looked like everything was swimming in a sauce..didn't seem like the person who cooked it cared anything about it.. The whole atmosphere was depressing and the dining experience wasn't anything good..so I don't know if I can go back there again.

Passable, mediocre Thai food. It will fill you up, and is better than fast food or typical buffet Chinese, but is not particularly outstanding. Now, if you've never had good Thai cuisine before, you will probably think this place is incredible. The place itself is a tiny hole-in-the-wall, you go down a flight of stairs to the basement of a strip mall to find it. Done right, this could lead to some nice atmosphere or ambiance, but they don't capitalize on it like they could. In the late 90's I lived right across the street from this place for a couple of years. I ate here a lot and thought it was incredible. Then, as I went to other Thai places I realized it was actually pretty mediocre. Not bad, but nowhere near as good as the reputation it has. I honestly think a lot of its reputation is due to it being right next to the UK campus and probably the first Thai place a lot of students will ever eat at, especially ones coming from rural areas where Thai food is not typically served. I went back here not too long ago when I was in the neighborhood, and found that either it had gone downhill, or I had really developed a higher standard for Thai cooking. The curry was very mild even after I asked for it to be spicy, the portion size was below average, and the food was slightly overpriced for what it was. It was still decent, and I've had worse, but it is not as outstanding as I remembered it once being. If you're a UK student living on campus, and don't have access to a car, this is a decent option for having a sit-down meal near campus, and the only real Asian restaurant near campus. That's the best endorsement I can give this place.

My how the mighty have fallen. Bangkok House used to be a pretty respectable Thai option. Not the best in Lexington -- which has been and always will be Planet Thai -- but at least decent. Not anymore though. I should say that I'd probably give Bangkok House two stars except that it does not deserve (and never did, really) the 4-star average rating it has. Hence the 1 star. I went here this past weekend on a visit home to the bluegrass. We walked in around 8 on a Friday evening to an empty restaurant. I ordered Red Curry Pad Ped with beef. The beef was Taco Bell grade, and the curry was almost flavorless. Everyone of the 6 people in my party remarked that their portion sizes were rather small. Particularly if you were to order a seafood entree for upwards of $12, the portions did not match the prices, especially in comparison to other Thai restaurants. My poor experience this time around makes me long even more for the Skyline Chili that used to be in this location 20 years ago.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in any city I have visited. I judge thai restaurants based on their chicken pad Thai and this restaurant has the best hands down. I compare all other restaurants pad thai to theirs and have yet to find one even close in comparison. Love the fact that it is a hole in the wall and very affordable for the quality of good they prepare.

My wife and I really like this place. We've both been going there since college and it's stayed consistently good and reasonably priced. They have several dishes that are good. I prefer the yellow curry, but sometimes I'll treat myself to the pad thai. Parking can be an issue.

  • Patrick R.

Kentuckians, why you would reward this place with 4 stars is beyond me. It must be the dearth of Thai in the area. The curry, if it can be called that, consisted primarily of veggies, chintzy with the chicken, and it was watery. It has the consistency of Tabasco sauce. They charge you per egg roll. $9 for a plate that only barely serves one. I had no problem with the service though.

  • Matt W.

This place is abysmal. Bangkok House is so incredibly depressing that I actually hope for truly terrible food because it would be, at least, remarkable. Instead you get mediocre entries -- small portions, poorly presented, poorly spiced, at barely warm temperatures. They take no pride in what they provide. It's a shame that it likely only pays the bills because of its proximity to campus.

Definitely a popular place for everyone that goes to UK....It is so close to campus and the second you walk in there is a digital photo frame that displays pictures of all of the customers here and the professor I ate here with showed up the moment we were walking by! So random! Definitely a family-owned place and they take pride in their customers which is always a plus, but the food is just average. Other people have said it is the best thai in lexington, and if that is true....well.....if you are thai you might not want to live here, or you may want to live here and open up your own thai restaurant and make some good money! ha ha We got the pad thai and the yellow curry with shrimp....the professor I went with always orders the pad thai and it is her favorite, but she is a vegetarian and there are lots of veggie options. My yellow curry was decent, just nothing too exciting, and I could have had a few more shrimp! I mean that is my protein for the day!!! And the curry could have had a little more spice to it too.... But it is kinda small so like a house, and they serve thai food, hence the bangkok, so bangkok house you are alright.

Food is good, but the portion is on the small side. The chopsticks are very unique, and make sure you do not steal them. The restaurant seems sensitive when it comes to their chopsticks.

I can't speak to the authenticity of the cuisine served at Bangkok House. But the two times I've been there have been satisfying. Lunch ranges from $7 to $12. They have many Thai options. I can't believe some people have given this place 1 star reviews. Fastfood is 1-star. Bangkok house is 4-star. I got the yellow curry with chicken earlier today. A friend and I got there just as the place opened at 11 AM for an early lunch. The curry was served in a soup bowl alongside a plate of rice. The waiter asked if I wanted my curry spicy, and I said yes. The portion was about right for lunch. It hurt so good. The flavor was all there. The chicken was tender, and the spicy curry was creamy and delicious. The potatoes seemed just barely done (could have used another hour, but I was an earlybird). My nose was running, but it was so flavorful. The dining area is nice, and it has a particular feel to it. It's certainly not upscale, but there's a cohesiveness of design that works. Service was quick and the water glasses were full. If you are on the UK campus, this place is a close and serves up a delicious hot meal. For the $8, I'd say it's worth it.

I've been to Thai restaurants in California, Australia, Cincinnati, etc and this is still the best to me in terms of flavor. This is why I am puzzled by the one and two star reviews. Someone also said Planet Thai was the best in Lexington. I've been there, too, and don't think it's very good. I've also been to other Thai restaurants in Lexington and still think that this is the best.

I can't completely give it four stars because I have had better Thai food but it is a good restaurant, clean, with great service. We ordered shrimp pad thai, spring roll, chicken satay, and Thai basil chicken. It hit the spot.

"Best Thai in Lexington"?! Wow... I had duck pad thai on a Tuesday evening and I even ordered one of "the best egg rolls of any Asian restaurant in the city" (Jeff J, 2008). I'm glad there's the caveat "in the city" for the last statement, because I'm pretty sure I've had frozen egg rolls that tasted better. It wasn't bad, but I don't think I'd go out and proclaim it as king. Perhaps it was an off day, but my pad thai was pretty terrible as far as pad thais go - noodles were lackluster and lumpy!, the seasoning was predictably on the sweet side, the duck was unfortunately dry and clearly from the prehistoric era. Even so, they were kind enough to make my dish a game of 'Duck Hunt' so I had fun fishing through noodles for the five meager shreds of duck to appear. Pew pew, I win... Service was pretty warm, though perhaps too warm. As a dining partner said, "I wish he'd stop molesting my water." Whatever, I like my water cup full - I say thanks. I'll probably come back and try something else if only because I'm on campus and don't want to get Mexican. Too bad I had such a mediocre experience with a staple dish of American Thai places.

I've had mixed experiences at Bangkok House. When I come for lunch, the food tends to be greasy and just okay, but when I come for dinner, the food is great. I especially love the curry puff appetizer, and I usually get the chicken pad thai as an entree. I think I prefer Thai Orchid Cafe overall, but I definitely enjoy the pad thai at dinnertime at Bangkok House.

Had a lunch here a few weeks ago. Specials are out on a board when you walk in. Thai TV is going on in the background. Decor is mid '70s. I had the Pad Thai which is what I normally order the first time I go to a Thai place. I wanted tofu, but the waiter tried to push chicken for some reason. I got the tofu. Ok. Nothing special. Spring roll was ok. I guess the average quality reflects proximity to professors and students across the street.

  • AM M.

Best Thai in Lexington? Well, that's concerning. Haven't tried any other Thai restaurants in Lexington but this one would not be hard to beat. Spring rolls were decent, but pad Thai (veg or tofu) leaves much to be desired. Prices for lunch specials seemed decent, but didn't get much, only about four pieces of tofu. Flavor was bland for the mild pad Thai and jumped to very spicy for medium. The food did come out quickly, but given the quality that could be because it's just waiting to be served up in back. Table service was lackluster as well. Overall disappointing...

It's been a while since I've been here, but I always hold it to be a hidden gem on the University of Kentucky campus. Located on the Avenue of Champions, it can be a little hard to find and you may have to ask around. But once you get there you are welcomed by a friendly wait staff and a fairly large menu that doesn't discriminate when it comes to different diets and appetites. Not usually busy outsdie of the lunch hour, so seating is never really an issue, unless you're there with a party of 20 or so.

It had been a long time since I've been to Bangkok House. About 10 years ago I worked on campus and was a regular patron. If you can't find the place, it is directly at the NW corner of Euciid (Ave of Champs) and Rose, but is located down the stairs. Over the years, not much has changed. Prices have gone up about $1-2 for my normal meal, I can't remember exactly. My normal meal is around $8. I think this is one of the most authentic Thai restaurants around. My have always been good, a little heavy on the bean sprouts. One thing to keep in mind is that they by default will make your dish mild, and I think that is too sweet because they leave out the pepper. I would recommend asking for spicy or extra spicy. In Thai dishes, if you leave out the heat, the sweetness can be overpowering. The Thai tea is very good, but like most Thais restaurants, it costs extra.

  • Cinimod S.

They have some great Thai food, I would say the best in Lexington. They also love their customers. The service, while not "high-end, appease your every need" is typical for Thailand, they get you what you need very efficiently and unobtrusively. You can talk to the owners and employees on the way out, they will probably show of some of their elephant paintings. Go there for lunch if you are looking for some Thai on the cheap. The lunch specials are served in decent sized portions, and around 6 or 7 dollars each. The seafood can drive up the cost dramatically, but it makes sense, as the coast is far away. Still I was shocked at the cost of my Tom Yum Soup with seafood (12.50). In Thailand it would have cost less than $2.

    (5)
  • Cameron M.

If you like spicy food this is the place. This is the only place in Lexington who can actually give it to you as hot as you want without adding hot sauce. They have 3 ratings on the menu for amount of spice, but if you tell them as spicy as they can make it they have another couple option waiting for you. The spicy one really hit the spot. I spent time in Bangkok this summer and found that they are very authentic. Their Tom Yum soup is unbelievable as well as there chicken and cashew. The curries are good, but definitely not as good as some of their regular entrees. If you order the right thing (Tom Yum soup and Chicken and Cashew) you will be coming back for years.

  • Josh Y.

While I agree with everyone that the foods is good at this place, but I'm not so sure about the price they charge you for the meal. I ordered a shrimp drunken noodles yesterday, and the serving portion is not even half of what I get at Planet Thai, or Mai Thai. Also, why are they using spaghetti noodles instead of the more traditional Thai noodles... If you live around campus, then this is a good place for you. But if you don't mind driving a little down to Fayette mall, then I would suggest you to dine in Planet Thai or Mai Thai..

This was yet another first for me. My dad took me here to try Thai for the first time when I was probably 15 or so. I fell in love with it, ordered extra peanut sauce (the peanut sauce here is ridiculously tasty), and am now completely addicted to it. In particularly their Tom Ka Kai with tofu instead of chicken is to die for. I always get it with rice and peanut sauce on the side and I mix them together to form a delectable porridge. Good call, Dad.

i first ate here in 1997, and since then i have eaten pad thai in dozens of restaurants in chicago, new york, DC, florida. while room service in NYC has a very different and delightful pad thai that deserves mention- none of them compared to the pad thai at bangkok for me. the noodles are dry, not greasy, with a subtle fish sauce flavor and sweet/spicy seasoning. i usually order it thai spicy, which is not everyone's cup of tea, but it hits the spot like no other pad thai ever has. their curries are mild and somewhat standard, but tasty nonetheless. egg rolls, not something i usually note in a thai restaurant, are fresher and tastier than most chinese take out places. their thai iced tea is excellent, as is their service- always friendly, always accomodating, never rushed. bangkok, you will always have my pad thai heart. always.

This was my first ever experience with Thai food and it's been consistently good over the years. The rich, fragrant iced tea is a delicious treat and the menu is great across the board - the noodles, salads, curries, apps, everything. Makes me miss Lexington!

I have been going to Bangkok House since it opened in the mid 1990s. The restaurant is a favorite with UK employees and graduate students. The service can sometimes be a bit off...especially during busy times...but the staff are friendly. While I think Siam has the best curries and Pad Thai as the best pad thai, Bangkok House still serves consistently good Thai. They also have the best egg rolls of any Asian restaurant in the city.

The food was tasteless and a relatively small portion (ordered 'Red Sea"). This was our second time in this restaurant and the food was on both occasions sub standard. We'll not return.

Bangkok House is an excellent family-owned Thai restaurant. Dishes are pretty regularly-priced (slightly expensive for a college student) but the dishes are excellent. I absolutely love the Chicken Pad Thai there. The food has always been quickly served and because the place is smaller and family-owned, the service is excellent. A great place to go for lunch if you are around UK campus area.
