The first time I came here, the service was amazing. Not only did they give us free chips and salsa like all mexican restaurants do, but they also gave us free soup that was really good. The owner I believe was the one who served us, and he kept coming and checking on us. He was really friendly. I heard about them from a coupon for a buy one get one dinner out of the entertainment book. They told me they no longer took them due to a change of ownership I believe, but he went ahead and gave me a half off the 2nd dinner anyways. The second time I came, the service was horrible! Someone else, maybe the owner's daughter?, was our server and she did a terrible job. I had another coupon and they didn't let me use it at all this time, which was okay with me, however we didn't get the free soup, and they took a long time brining our food. Since the food was taking so long, we asked for more salsa & the waitress had to ask for permission before bringing it to us. I've never been to a mexican restaurant where they had to question bringing more salsa. She also took a long time bringing the salsa & didn't end up bringin it untiil after we got our food so we didn't even want it at that point. Also I shouldn't forget to mention that she brought salsa with no chips. She didn't check on us until we were finished with our food, so we didn't get refills. When she finally came to check on us we asked for the check and a to go box. She said she was going to get it, but my husband had to go to the cash register himself because after waiting a while we saw the waitress washing the walls. When she saw him go up to pay, she came back with a box but took our food that we wanted to put in it... I was too fed up at that point to say anything so I just poured the salsa that we didn't eat into the box. At that she gave me a dirty look, kind of like she thought I requested the salsa just to take it home when in reality, I wanted to eat it while waiting on the food, and even after I got the food I couldn't possibly have eaten it without chips! I will not be returning.

We love this place, and make excuses to go. It's easily the restaurant we've visited most since moving to the area. Angelo, the owner, is wonderfully friendly. Everything they make is fresh and delicious. Try the enchiladas poblanos (made with mole sauce), my wife never gets anything else. I usually get authentic carne asada tacos, and I love their chile relleno. Sorry the other reviewer had a bad experience. Our dozens of experiences there couldn't have been different. We took 17 people there for my son's birthday and everyone loved it.

Upon arriving back in the Northern Kentucky area this week, the first place my parents wanted to take us for dinner was Maya's. They are big fans of this Mexican joint which is hidden next to a gas station in the Florence area. Maya's has some great drink specials and we took advantage of cheap margarita's and beers while waiting for the meal. The menu is not too big, and not too simple and hit all your sweet spots when it comes to a Mexican restaurant. I ordered some enchiladas which came quickly and were pretty good. You know, just about everything I can think of at Maya's is pretty good. Nothing is bad, but nothing is amazing. The decor falls into that category as well, a-ok. The one thing that did impress was the service, which I found to be excellent. Maybe it was because my parents are regulars, but they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and that alone makes it easy to go back.

This is truly authentic. They have the most simple and delicious tacos in NKY. Try the tongue taco.

The decor was horrible. The food was terrible. The food was too salty. The only reason people appear to even go there is for the bar. Don't waste time, take your family elsewhere.

Great service. Quick and friendly. Try a small bowl of the charro bean soup. It's spicy but delicious! Family owned and NOT another chain...that's worth any small inconvenience. I'll be back!

Mayas defines the term "Hidden Gem". It is on Hopeful Church Rd at Hwy 42 in Florence, behind the BP station and you always find the best food at places that are structurally connected to a gas station, right? Well, in this case, yes, you do. We have been here half a dozen times and the food has never disappointed. Truth be told, service has varied from visit to visit, but the place seems to be family run, without a large staff. Many times the owner is the alone in the kitchen and if multiple parties come in at the same time, someone is going to have to wait. For us any wait has always been well rewarded with authentic, delicious meals. We have not visited on any occasion when we were trying to keep a tight schedule, drinks are very reasonably priced and happy hour runs until 7, so relax and enjoy. If you are looking for Americanized Mexican food, drive on by, you won't get your Chalupa fix here, but if you want really good authentic Mexican and the chance to talk to the owner, chief cook and bottle washer, please give Mayas a try.

My wife and I came in, drenched from the pouring rain and looking for something to eat. We found great, personalized service and delicious food. The chicken fajitas were tasty and the margarita was delicious! We'll definitely be back.

I went to the restaurant not sure what to order. The table next to us had fajitas and they smelled great. So I ordered the steak fajitas. Way too salty. The rice and beans were good though. For a hole in the wall, food is ok, not sure if I would return.

This is by far the best Mexican food I have ever had. The Margaritas taste so good you feel as if you just stepped into a jacuzzi. The fish tacos are made with seasoned catfish that melts in your mouth.

Good food and good Margaritas. It's not the best Mexican food I've ever had, but definitely beats out the big chains. Margaritas are really good. Guacamole is good. I found the carnitas to be a little fatty for my taste. Chicken and Chorizo dishes have been very tasty and good quality. We generally eat here every couple of weeks on average.

Authentic Mexican food with great service. Salsa made fresh from scratch daily. Margaritas also made fresh daily. Both are excellent. Easy to miss place as it is in a strip plaza next to a gas station, but stop by you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely the worst service ever. I cleaned my own table, got myself three rounds of drinks, asked the server to take my drink order (since it had been almost an hour) she told me I would have to wait (rudely in front of customers) and served two tables that came in after me, before me. No apologies whatsoever other than from the poor girl bussing tables. This place is a joke, I am sorry I ever told people to go here and be treated this way!!!

Overall, not a great experience. Not even a good experience. The place is small, in a strip small, with bar seating for 10, 6 booths, and 4 tables or so. It was not really clean, and looked old. I can get past the hole In the wall ambience if the food rocks. And this place did not. The Food was not bad. At least the adult food was not bad. But it wasn't really good and it certainly didn't rock. Portions were small and kinda greasy. The kids got a soggy cheese quesadilla and a not quite cooked cheese pizza. My husband thought the service was good, I would call it mediocre. I ordered fajitas with no onion and got extra onions. My drink was never refilled, the chips were never refilled and the queso came out with that layer of "I've been sitting out too long" film on top. I wouldn't recommend.

Now, I've hit up just about every Mexican restaurant throughout the Cincinnati/NKY area. I had thought that I'd found my favorite Mexican place in Tostado's Grill, which also offers excellent karaoke, but Maya's in Florence takes the cake. I haven't had any authentic Mexican food since I actually went to dinner at my friend Richardo's family home. Everything else I've had around here has been Tex Mex, which is good in its own respect but it is not Mexican food. Maya's delivered to me tacos as they are meant to be. Tacos that were fresh, beautiful, and very tasty. I also loved the horchata, and have yet to find it anywhere else in the area. I enjoy the place immensely and am a regular.

This place was wonderful. The owner took the time to talk to us about the menu and make recommendations. Everything our party ordered was delicious. The Margaritas and sangria were hand made and very tasty. This is by far one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to.

This is one of my favorite places. Sure the decor isn't fantastic, but it's clean. The service we get is also always friendly and efficient. I'm sure it does help that I'm a regular. Wednesday is 1/2 off Margarita night and these are seriously the best Margaritas around. Frozen or on the rocks. The food is simple and delicious. I really recommend the guacamole and the beef tongue taco but everything I've had is delicious. The atmosphere is relaxed and it's a great place to come and hang out over dinner with friends and stay and laugh. My only complaint? I always smell like tortilla chips when I leave. But that's not exactly awful and certainly doesn't stop me from going back.

I decided to stop at Maya's last night for Cinco De Mayo...having said that, it was me and my 2 year old, so we really weren't "partying" per se, but Momma needed a $2.99 Margarita (as advertised) before heading to Kohl's and Target to finish up Mother's Day shopping for my THREE mothers. Maya's is small, and the place was hoppin'. It's not ever been like that before when I've been in for carry out, so I'm chalking it up to Cinco De Mayo amateur night. Lots of large parties of women, mostly, in revealing tight shirts taking up a lot of tables and a lotta time. We waited about 5 minutes for a table, which was no big deal, but there really isn't "any" place to wait--you're just sort of stuck in the doorway. Our server was nice, but she seemed COMPLETELY scattered. People who were seated after us got their chips/salsa and beer before us, I had to ask several times for water, and she even seemed to doubt her abilities because she said to me three times, "Ok. yes. you have silverware." She was nice, but I don't know that she was ready for the onslaught of Florencites on Cinco De Mayo. I ordered the Asada Torta (Mexican sandwich). I looove Tortas and I've had them from Brooklyn, NY to Los Angeles and in between. The Torta was good, though the well seasoned beef was somewhat tough. They also put refried beans on the sandwich, which added an additionally creamy texture with the avocado, but it made the sandwich very difficult to hold/eat. Messy. I went through 3 large napkins and never felt like I could put the sandwich down for fear of losing it all. I would have liked a little more chihauha cheese or farmers cheese (if there was any, it was very little). I managed, but I've loved a lot of other Tortas more.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
