My husband and I checked out this place late on a Friday night and were so pleased. It was pretty sparse but our waitress was very attentive and helpful. They were still running the half price sushi special (excluding specialty rolls) and I hope they keep this special! The sushi came out VERY fast (10 minutes tops) and was very fresh. It was some of the most excellent sushi I've had around here (so far, I've only liked Kanai, Hana Cafe, and Sumo). Overall, great atmosphere, phenomenal food, and pleasant experience!

My client and I had a good dinner and I thought the Sushi was average or even better. However was very surprised to learn that the restaurant does not serve a light Japanese beer, and I was in the mood for a Kirin or Sapporro light beer, oh well. My last disapointment was that when I tried to pay for my business dinner with my American Express card I was advised that they don't take AMEX, so much for using my company card.

We really love sushi and being from Dallas are accustomed to great sushi. We had not found too many places in Wichita that we felt were really great. When we got to Wasabi's we found the place charming and the wait staff friendly. The manager came by several times to ensure our meal was good. LOVED the sushi! Good size, came out quickly, and great tasting. We even bring out of towners here! Love it! Only downside is it's a bit expensive, but that seems to be nationwide for sushi.

I would eat here once a week if it wasn't an hour away! We had miso, tempura calamari, tempura veggies, crazy crab roll and a spicy salmon roll. Everything listed above was amazing. We were talked into a deep fried cheesecake that was the worst thing we had all night. The fried part was ok but the cheesecake wasn't special and was frozen. The appetizer tempura dishes were very small. I am not looking for a Midwestern chain sized appetizer but the size of these dishes were barley enough to even judge the dish especially when sharing two appetizers. Even though they were good, next time I would just get more rolls. We went on a Saturday and made reservations on Thursday. Our friends arrived early and were told that they don't do reservations. We we ended up getting seated right around the time of the original reservation. I asked the waiter about their reservation policy and he said they don't accept same-day reservations. So who really knows. I wish they had a full bar. They have beer but no stouts. I will go back.

Very disappointed with this restaurant. We arrived 20 minutes before closing and they refused to seat us. If you want to close at 9:40, don't advertise being open until 10:00. After driving across town it was a bit frustrating.

I went with a Friend and had a great time. The sushi was good and the atmosphere was good. The only down fall was the sushi chefs they didn't talk. They handed the form and did not try to have a conversation with the people at the sushi bar. They hand you form and then they pick them up. I will try it again just because the sushi was good and the restaurant had a good vibe.

I was so excited to check out this spot.. We were not disappointed! The sushi was excellent! Sake was hot (& delicious)! The only downside was that the service was slow and inexperienced ( we had to flag him down for refills) but super friendly. Our sever also forgot our appetizer... Which was disappointing sine I was looking forward to trying their Calamari Tempura, but oh well. The breakdown: Atmosphere was good, service ok, sushi and sake :AWESOME!!

Lovely atmosphere, very friendly & helpful staff, reasonable prices, and fantastic sushi! We will be back, hopefully often. Highlights: Well, everything really but especially the tempura vegetables (which featured a fantastically light batter and were easily the freshest tasting vegetables I've ever had in a tempura), the seafood roll (extremely yummy), and the albacore sushi (an absolute knock-out). I don't know how we got so lucky, but the chef sent out a complementary dish of white tuna sushi elaborately topped with roe, pickled pepper, and marinated onion that was so wonderfully sweet and lovely that I can't possibly do it justice, but can only say that it somehow reminded me of baja fish tacos. The dessert menu was intriguing too, especially the green tea and red bean ice creams, but we just didn't have room left.

The sushi was really good. We always start out with edamame while we wait for our order. We never knew who our server was going to be half the time. Started out with a guy then went to a girl than back to the guy. I don't care for that style of service. When I asked a question about a particular kind of sushi, I got a blank stare with a snotty reply. This location is a bit on the pretentious side and if that's your style and more for a college age crowd.

Came at 4pm on a Sunday, we were one of 3 parties in the restaurant and wanted to sit at a booth. The one available was dirty and needed to be cleaned. We had to wait about 5 mins and the server acted as if we were inconveniencing him. It took quite a long time for them to come ask us for our order. When we ordered he got it wrong: instead of subbing the Spicy tuna roll for the Cali roll (as their menu allows) he brought us an entire spicy tuna roll and my box had the Cali roll. Can't complain bc he comped the spicy tuna. But the boxes we got (chicken teriyaki) were so dry and flavorless. The tempura vegetables were bland and all I could taste was the grease in the dough- no seasoning whatsoever. The Cali, spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls were on average what you would expect. If you go here, just make sure to get sushi, nothing else.

I've been to Wasabi on Rock Road a few times and quite enjoyed it, but my first visit to the Old Town one will be my last. The food is not the issue: one item I ordered never showed up (except on the bill); a flaming roll was never set alight--meaning the sake was still present, negatively affecting the taste of the roll; a bento box ordered with a tuna roll instead of California roll (per the menu's allowable substitutions) came out with the California roll anyway. This is three separate dishes out of only four ordered that either never came or were incorrect. Our server never bothered to ask us how things were until we'd sat there long enough to no longer be interested in fixing any of it. They barely even apologized...it seemed as though they'd been down this road a few times too many. Not good.

Trendy location. Delicious sushi. Friendly servers. According to the Yelp four star review comment, "Yay! I'm a fan!", and yes, I am definitely a fan! The people at Old-Town Sushi Bar By Wasabi know how to make sushi. Delicious sushi with each roll offering different fresh ingredients. I highly recommend the Stone Henge or anything with jalapeno in it. The Stone Henge was probably the largest dish I tried. All rolls are moderately priced (for sushi). Do you want to get a drink? Try the warm sake. It definitely hits the spot. Overall, a good choice to take a first date. I noticed a lot of women have their all-girl's nights here, so it is probably a top choice among the women.

Fresh. Great atmosphere. Quick service. Teriyaki platter with miso and salad. Yum. Trying their sushi tonight...next time the sashimi. Wow the tropical sushi, crisp, fresh, a little spicey.YUM. highly recommended

Food is still delicious but the service and wait times are pretty ridiculous. Granted we came on a Friday night but an hour plus wait was crazy! At least tell us the kitchen is backed up so we have a chance to go to another restaurant with reasonable wait times! Waitress forgot 2 of our table's appetizers. Some food arrived an hour later but not everyone had their food and we like to wait to eat with everyone so it was an additional 15min wait. We heard two other tables around us also complain about the wait times. The staff was also yelling/screaming across the entire restaurant for a table doing sake bombs "When we say sake, you say bomb" chant. Not once but twice! Not a good place for a date, too loud and boisterous. I'm gonna stick to the Rock Road location from now on, too many mistakes here ;(

The service at the downtown location has gone so far downhill I can't even describe. The food is still good, most of the time, but good luck getting it. Wait times are absurd. You'll be seated and you have to search for a waiter to put in your order. I work across the street so we go regularly for lunch and it's infuriating to have my lunch take well over an hour sometimes, just waiting on the food and the check. Their "team serving" is not working for them. They would be so much better served to hire a good service staff.

Sushi was not good quality. Perfect margarita was a tequila sunrise. Rolls were to big and salmon didn't smell fresh. Wouldn't recommend

I used to really like going here, but I haven't been in a while since I've been out of state. It's kind of unfortunate that it's not as good as I remembered it to be. The regular rolls were packed with rice. It's not a buffet, no need to pack so much rice to get us full. Plus, the rice was too sour and cold for my taste. The miso soup was also overly salty. I was most disappointed by the service though. It took a longgggggggggg time to get the water refilled and the waitress didn't check back with us until we were completely done.

Last night I went to Wasabi in Oldtown for my birthday dinner but was greatly dissappointed. We were seated and that was it; no one came to table. No menu's, no service, nothing for almost 10 minutes. It almost felt like we were a bother to the staff. I have been to this location many times and always had amazing service but I guess times have changed. Will never go back.

The sushi was good. The service was slow and the florescent lighting wasn't appealing. If you just want sushi and don't care about the service or atmosphere this would be a good place.

This has got to be my favorite sushi restsurany in wichita! The slice of the fish is thick! Definitely bang for your buck!!! The rolls are big too! I recommend it to everyone! The only downside of it is that if you're looking for a high class fancy display, its not that fancy but it still look yummy.

  • Karina S.

They have the best sushi rolls in town. I have gone to many Japanese restaurants all over the world and this restaurant is world-class. I tried 6 kinds of their rolls and they are all very good. Sunset, caterpillar, lobster and the rest I can't really remember the name but the rolls with lemons on top is the best. Their bento boxes are also very good. The tempura that comes with it is crunchy and fresh. Keep up the good quality!

Went here for saki bombs & sushi. I love the ninja roll! It's a must-try! Their sashimi tasted fresh, no fishy taste/smell = good thing. Think we ordered so much we received a complimentary roll. Baked lobster had melted cheese, but wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Great service. Parking can be a hassle on busy club/bar nights.

THE BEST SUSHI PLACE IN WICHITA. they serve a LOT of various sushis! loveeddd almost all of what i have tried, crazy crab, coconut giglo, stonehedge, love roll, and many more i do not remember! i have not came across to something that I cannot eat! their dumplings and edamane is great as well. great location, fun place to go by on weekends. nice restaurant atmosphere. but the only thing that isnt great about this.. its pricey :(

  • Supine B.

The atmosphere and service is very friendly and they have good prices too, but they lacks fresh sushi flavor. More than half of the rolls on menu are covered in sauce and deep fried. You don't get the taste of "sushi" and if you do order a simple roll it lacks flavor. I don't recommend ordering the kitched food becauses it isn't that great either. However if you know what to order they do have some tasty items. The Japanese burrito and the Hawaiian roll are excellent.

Ok sushi. Decent service. Slow on a weeknight. Good location in Old Town. Nice restaurant atmosphere. A little pricy for the product.

Wasabi is similar to Hana Cafe is several ways. They both have a dark and intimate ambiance, but I can imagine Wasabi, once really busy would be a pain in the ass to navigate through. Hana has parking outside the building and a parking garage, whereas on a busy night in Old Town getting in and out of the parking lot for Wasabi could also be a huge pain. Another Yelper described the sushi bar in Wasabi as being awkward, and I agree. They both offer affordable sushi so the quality is comparable. The both use minced tuna for their tuna rolls which I really hate. I prefer cuts of tuna, like they offer at Sakura. Wasabi's rolls are pretty large, and I think that takes away from the enjoyment of eating sushi. It's kind of hard to savor when you're trying not to choke or make a huge mess. I recommend the spicy salmon roll and the crab cakes, they were pretty amazing. Not a fan of the coconut Gigolo roll, way too rich for my liking, but 2 friends of mine loved it.

  • Christy O.

I like Wasabi because it's got good sushi at reasonable prices, a pleasant atmosphere (except late on weekends where they seem pretty into club music at high volumes), and the service isn't completely terrible. Yes, the sushi is extremely Americanized - oh, no, call the Japanese food police, because we can not have that in landlocked Kansas! It's fried, there's cheese, and they add flavors instead of letting you taste the pure essence of the fish because let's face it, we live no where near an ocean. I enjoyed the fried specialty rolls for a time and I got tired of them, so now I mostly stick to the regular rolls like spicy tuna and avocado and eel. Something that probably doesn't get tried often is their salmon skin salad which rocks. The food comes out quickly enough and I pretty much eat only the sushi because, well, I work at a Thai restaurant and I won't eat anything I can make myself over there. Try the big boss, the dragon roll, and the Wichita roll. Review update: Still love this place and I've gotten used to ordering salads now because I want to lower my carb consumption. Be weary of the salad, because sometimes the lettuce is not as fresh as it should be. Avocado salad is delicious and cheap and the sashimi salad usually comes with lots of fish. Unfortunately, don't look for consistency because I've never had the salads made the same way twice. Customer service remains awful. Not awful enough that you won't keep coming back, but if you have a tendency to be a jerk about omitting your tip because of service (yes, I say "jerk" because really you should always tip and if service is that bad, saying something or don't come back ... but still tip), then this place might not be for you. The server turn around must be high, because I'm rarely served by the same waiter/waitress unless it's the manager. Dropping my review down to a 3 from a 4. Place is still great! Just kind of not feeling it as strongly as I used to. Maybe it'll go back up when service improves.

If ever a Japanese restaurant opened in a late 19th century Abilene Train saloon that had crash-landed in the French Quarters of Shanghai, China, Old Town Sushi by Wasabi would be it. The atmosphere exudes an amalgamation of space and time that would even befuddle Einstein. The black tin roof would suggest sarsaparilla and whiskey, while the blaring Ke$ha would portray a 21st century discothèque. The rice-paper dividers evidence traditional Japanese culture, while the bright window front conjures memories of a more European architecture-in-China circa 1900 feel. But enough of the atmosphere - what of the food? The food is fine. The sushi is fresh, as all sushi should be. You're not going to be struck ill within hours...or at all. The sushi slices are generous, and flavorful enough that the distinct flavors of sake, Hamachi, toro and albacore shine though. The pieces glisten on the plate, indicating that you're getting your dose of omega-3s. The sushi rice below isn't sour, nor is it too sweet. The service is less than adequate - enough for me to mention it. The wait staff doesn't seem to know what it's serving, which is really disappointing considering the chef has major slicing skills, and each bite is smooth...no tendons attached. And the chef's generosity is the reason this joint gets four stars.

I love this place! Fresh & tasty. The crab cakes. & Rainbow roll are worthy! A little loud but still a fun atmosphere. Prices are fair & good size portions.

When it comes to fresh fish I heard this was the place to go . We ordered the sashimi and definitely realized that we've definitely evolved since our first Sushi roll ( California roll). With that being said , I do believe that this place has the freshest fish considering how far in the mainland we are . Now onto their specialty rolls , we tried the ninja (did not care to much for it ) , playboy (loved it), popcorn lobster ( amazing especially the little kick of spice ) , coconut gigolo ( sweetness of the coconut throws of the fact that it's a dinner roll ? But still yummy!) Why I gave only four and not five stars.... The seaweed salad is one of my faves and always have to have it with any of my rolls. Their seaweed salad just tasted too tangy ... the flavor just did not balance well on my palate ... Their crab cake appetizer was over sauced with siraracha . They definitely were not stingy with the sauce which drowned out the amazing fried cakes that would've spoken for itself without any condiments . Loved the atmosphere and it was located in Old Town which is probably why they have successfully opened more restaurants in other prime locations in Wichita. All in all not disappointed but wouldn't be my first choice in Wichita. Ninza is ;)

Horrifying sanitation. Waiter was handling dirty buckets, dirty dishes while taking orders and serving raw food without washing his hands or using gloves. I do not want food poisoning and will never return. We left enough cash to cover our 2 drinks and walked out as our raw sushi just sat for 15 minutes waiting for him to bring to us. It was still siiting, waiting to be brought to us when we walked out.

Great, Generous, and Friendly are a few words to describe Wasabi in Old Town. Walking in the place, you are immediately greeted by the whole staff. We were seated right away and got the larger table because at the time it wasn't too busy. Good timing too because about 10-15 minutes later, the place got real packed. This was about 7 p.m. to give you a good idea on a weekday. The menu is physically large. Each page is in a clear plastic sleeve. Not a huge fan of that, because the pages can cling on to each other. The items listed was a long list of things. Can be intimidating to a new comer to sushi. The premium menu list is a bit more detailed as it tells you what ingredients are used in each roll. I would suggest they make the menu a bit more simple. We were served by a young cute lady who was very enthusiastic to help us. We looked at the menu for a good while and she was patient enough to wait for our orders. Their beer is a bit expensive, so expect that if you are wanting to drink. She did give us complimentary sake to try out. Once we got our orders in, she gave us some free miso soup too! How nice! This experience is already getting better! I would say our order only took about 15-20 minutes, so about standard time when you order and get your food. Great in that respect. I ordered the California roll and Playboy roll. Not thinking too well about it.... it ended up being a lot of food. Looking at the pictures you think.. I should probably order more. (American mentality) But boy was I filled up and feeling satisfied after eating all that sushi. Fresh, flavorful, and it just hit the spot. Prices start from 3-4 dollars off the budget menu, and 10-14 dollars for the premium rolls. For one person, expect to pay about 10-25 dollars all together. Not terribly expensive, but good for the value and experience. I've heard this place has bad service, but my experience it was excellent. Will be coming back here.

Best Sushi in Wichita. Very nice atmosphere. Weird sushi bar seating that is too high but we still love to sit at the bar. The crazy crab roll is so good. The rainbow roll is also well worth it. The wait staff is always helpful but be prepared for a longer wait since it gets busy in the evenings. I prefer the orange fresh ginger dressing on my salads rather than the sweet sauce they serve - that is my only negative comment about this place. There is this amazing crunchy topping that is made from tiny shredded fried potatoes that is a must have - it's not tempura flakes (they have those too), its BETTER. The menu is full of good options and you are allowed to substitute or add (which is one reason I do not like Kanai). This is the place to go for sushi in Wichita.

Unfortunately for Old-Town Sushi Bar and for me, I went here as a birthday dinner. It was my first time, but since I had been craving sushi for a while, my husband thought it would be a good time. All I can say is, Meh. Actually, I can say more, and I will. Setting: My husband and I came here around 5 p.m. There were about 3 other couples here, but besides that, the place was basically empty. Perhaps if we had gotten here later we would have had a better experience... Atmosphere: Everything except the music was good. I'm turning 27, not 17, so please stop playing Justin Bieber. Service: Could've been better. We weren't there maybe 3 minutes before our waiter showed up asking us what we wanted to drink. When I was looking @ the menu, he said something about not being able to serve alcohol... my husband said he thought the waiter said something about an expired liquor license, but I didn't hear it with my own ears. Nice to know waiter, but its 5 p.m. I just want iced tea...thanks. Then, given another (at the most) 5 minutes, he came back to ask about food. If you have ever seen the menu, I would guess it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out what you want, especially if its your first time there. Our appetizer, soup, salad, and main course basically came out at the same time! This was the deal breaker for me. If I recall correctly, I don't think I ever got a refill on my iced tea. Menu: We ordered edamame. It was pretty good! But I dare say its hard to mess up something you just steam and put salt on. My husband got some sort of sampler platter thingy. I don't even remember what was on there. As I was looking through the menu, I noticed a trend in the sushi category. These were the main ingredients in most of the sushi: It was either/and/or: 1. salmon 2. spicy tuna 3.crab 4. cream cheese 5. eel 6. avocado Considering the lack of variety in ingredients, I was surprised how many menu items they had! So I attempted to order vastly different rolls. Presentation: My food was good, although I think without some of the sauce on top, it would probably be very bland. Overall: I've had better. Soooo much better. Mostly, the menu needs to be re-thought, and wait staff should be more aware of their tables. The end.

This place is fantastic. I didn't think Kansas would have great sushi being so far from the ocean but it is amazing. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. The chef gave us a roll that was out of this world. Highly recommended.

I've live in California for over 18 years, then Oregon, for another 3 years, now living in Kansas the past 4 years, I'd say if your looking for fresh, prepared, Sushi or any traditional ethnic Japanese cuisine, 'Wasabi' located off of Douglas st in downtown Wichita, Ks is a must see or stop through, for local friends, or taking in family from out of state the attire, is casual, atmosphere very cool, collected, calm, a family run business with meticulous detail in every dish, fine dinning at a reasonable price too, so enjoy, truly a treat for Wichita, while being one of my all time favorite places to take folks too see when they first visit Wichita, again I've had Japanese dishes from lose Angeles to San Fransisco ,all the way to Portland , Oregon, So I highly recommend to try once, you wont be disappointed, hmm

For Wichita this is an OK-sushi place. They make an effort with their specialty rolls, I'll give them that. But their standard rolls are just that...standard. I'm not sure when I'll learn that even as a mostly-vegetarian, their "vegetable roll" is just gross and flavorless. Add in that they don't offer a full bar (beer and wine only) and they're 3 stars at best. The hot green tea is good, but I'm not sure how you can mess that up. Service is average here, nothing to write home about. One time sitting at the bar we were offered a free specialty roll - not sure how they decide to do this or not, but that was cool. Strangely, they play hip-hop/rap/club music which seems awkward and out of place. I'll probably keep going back, but kind of prefer the "other" sushi place in Old Town.

I absolutely love Wasabi! I have never had a bad experience. The place has great atmosphere, a polite and attendant staff, and amazing food! I didn't really care for sushi before coming to Wasabi, but now it is one of my favorite foods! I went at couple different times. Usually at 2pm, which I love because there are only a couple other people eating. I also went at 8:30pm at night and while there was more people, I still received great service. I also loved the parking, most of the times I can park right in front or just in the parking lot to the side and not have to walk very far. I suggest Wasabi to all my friends and to all of you!

I had zero expectations of anything edible. My experiences in Wichita so far suggested that the large people here value mass quantities of flavorless, poorly prepared food. If they can stuff that crap in a bag and make it greasy - it's a hit here. In the cloyingly overdone Old Town section of Wichita, there is a semblance of intelligent life: Wasabi. Refreshingly free of size 24+ short short clad middle aged women and fat men in wife beaters, there were more suave people than I had seen thus far. The server was delightful, and naturally I peppered her about gluten free. No GF tamari, but it was no problem ordering soy sauce and gluten free. I ordered the sashimi deluxe and a seaweed salad - with low expectations. The seaweed salad was light and fresh. The sashimi deluxe was huge and exactly what I wanted and never thought I'd see in Wichita. Elegant presentation, beautiful quality and lovely lovely wasabi. Whenever I'm in Wichita, I'm headed here.

It's not terrible, but the size of the rolls are too big to fit in your mouth. While there is plenty of variety and even a roll that comes out on fire, I wish they would be smaller in width.

I prefer simple sushi without all the bells and whistles...and wasabi is def about those...very creative and still tasty. Better than sumo, but not comparable to kanai.

Wasabi was a pleasant surprise. I was visiting Wichita for work and on my final night I decided to try Wasabi. I had a wonderful experience. In fact, I'm a little bummed that I decided to eat here on my last night in town. Service: The service was very good. I walked in and was seated immediately. The servers were very attentive and made sure everything was just right. Food: The food was very good. I decided to binge a little since it was my last night and I had a good chunk of my per diem left. I ordered the tonkastu plate. It was great! It comes with tonkatsu (pork cutlet), miso soup, salad, tempura, rice and California Roll. Just this plate alone is enough to fill you up. I was full half way through this plate. However, being a glutton I also ordered Albacore sushi, Salmon sushi, and a spicy tuna hand roll. It was all delicious. I was quite impressed at the food quality. Wasabi is an excellent Japanese Restaurant. It was very impressive. I did not expect to find such a place in Wichita. The sushi was fresh and the other food was very good. Who knew?!?! I thought all Kansas had to offer was good BBQ.

  • Chris M.

Had the chirasi... Imitation crab meat and flavorless sushi rice. One of the chefs did make me a seaweed salad side that was quite good, but nothing in the chirasi had any flavor and the wasabi was necessary to make it edible. Also, nearly every roll combo came with California rolls as one of the rolls

Nice Decor Great Sushi Loud atmosphere Awkward seating Every time I go to Wasabi, I'm unhappy with my seat. I can't really explain what is wrong, its just awkward. Maybe the placement of the sushi bar itself? It's fairly typical, better than average decor, I can't complain. Service is good and customizations of rolls is an easy process. The lunch menu isn't that great as they leave the better items off this menu. Drinks are good here too, but the real treat are some of the specialty rolls. A friend of mine likes the one with the blueberry compote on top, but the one that is really special is the one with peanut butter. I know, it sounds strange, bizarre and above all weird, but its really good - try it!

Let me just say, "WOW!" I have a new fave sushi place in the midwest! I refuse to try Sumo and will continue coming here. My first visit was during a blizzard and we were the only souls there. When I returned on a Wednesday night for my friend's b-day, I was amazed how packed it was. The Stonehenge and Wasabi rolls are amazing! Kwan Court when I need a quick fix, Wasabi when I want to seriously indulge! Did I mention 1/2 price sushi rolls??!!

    (4)
  • Serena H.

Meh. I heard good things about this place so I was excited to try it. Plus kwan kourt closed down so maybe this was the next best thing. I got the crunch roll and a spicy salmon roll. The crunch roll was yummy (its pretty hard to mess that up) but the spicy salmon wasn't really what i expected, which would have been ok, except that i specifically asked the waiter about the roll before I ordered it to make sure it was what i wanted--larger chunks of salmon, not all shredded up. The waiter was really confused and really didn't understand what I was asking. I really think he didn't have much experience being waiter. After I ate some of it, I told him its not what I wanted and he seemed to be really confused again and didn't know what i was talking about. Overall, my food was OK and the service was a little lacking due to the waiter's confusion and apparent lack of experience.

too bad that the help AND service can not be good as the food... I ordered take out three nights in a row and when on the third night my seaweed salad didn't make it into the order. I called and was told that I had to call back in a couple hours when the manager would be there and this was at 5-6 pm. I was also told that it couldn't be taken off my bill or delivered. I asked what customer service they offered and he said None..... WHO HAS THEIR EPLOYESS MAKE THAT STATEMENT I did go back and get the salad and the carton had been cut and the bag had a hole so it made a stain on my rental car seat.... So please be careful that you bring and extra bag. the staff thinks it is funny to one up their customers

My favorite sushi place in Wichita. They have adventurous rolls and quality ingredients. Hard to decide what roll is my favorite. I have never regretted ordering anything on the menu.

Went here again last night. Wasnt very busy for the first Friday of Lent. We ordered so much sushi. Max took good care of us. He's the best. A couple of our new favorite things on the menu which we recommend are the Spicy Poki Salad, Hawaiian Roll and To Heaven Roll BUT you have to ask for it the old way. Its much prettier and definitely tastes better. Great place for kids. My girls(7 &8) love the sushi. The servers are always friendly. Sure they get really busy but I dont mind waiting a while longer for the best sushi in Wichita. Sushi chef even sent us a little complimentary sushi. Delicious! We will continue to come back.

I went to this restaurant during my visit to my uncle's place for my vacation. I was craving sushi so my uncle took me to this place. I don't know if it's because I'm used to the better sushi restaurants from my area, but I felt so disappointed. The sushi was not fresh at all, they use too much mayo for all the dishes, and the service was also horrible. Sushi is suppose to be one of the healthy meals but it felt worst than eating fast food. I really don't recommend this place to anyone and totally don't understand the good reviews that people wrote about this place. Sorry to say but the food here was so disgusting, I felt like I had an upset stomach after this place.Even though I'm a sushi lover I had no craving for sushi whatsoever for awhile after going to this restaurant. The dish pictures on the yelp looks like it will be tasty, but in reality it is not even close to what it looks like. It's totally a waste of money.

I added this business earlier in the week and ate there on Friday only to be sniped for the first review? Sometimes life can be so unfair. Should write your reviews faster, Brad... I like the idea of Old Town - take a typical downtown scene and filter out all of those pesky and boring office buildings, leaving nothing but restaurants, and bars. The problem is, there's, like a dozen restaurants in the area, and maybe seven of which are worth eating at. We need growth, and Wasabi, a new sushi restaurant that opened Tuesday a few stores down from Larkspur, is another worthwhile addition to the area. Wasabi is the first Wichita restaurant from Steve and Eun Young, the operators of two sushi restaurants in Tulsa. They've been working on opening Wasabi since the beginning of the year, finally opening last Tuesday, to the surprise of the panhandler which was playing his guitar on the stoop outside, when I was trying to decide whether the place was actually open. A server welcomed me in to tell me that yes, yes it was open. I had a smile on my face during my entire dining experience because of how eager the staff seemed to please. Young-san may be experienced in the restaurant business - owning places in LA, Tennessee, and Arkansas - but some of the staff seemed new to the game, but eager to learn. The meal began with some miso soup. It was pretty typical, though I was a little taken aback when the waiter asked me if I wanted more. Chef Young was behind the bar, and I placed my life in his hands by ordering the sushi deluxe, a sampling of the chef's choice, along with a shrimp tempura roll. I think the rolls I received were tuna, salmon, unagi, and hamachi, and one other item which I don't recall, each of which was impeccably fresh and was allowed to express itself against the slightly vinegared rice. I think I might be mistaken about the shrimp tempura, too, as it wasn't actually tempura battered at all (a good thing, since I don't really care for that), but lightly breaded with panko and garnished with chopped scallions. I'm not usually a fan of the more ornate rolls, but it served as a nice cross section of the sushi that Wasabi had to offer, and it was pretty good, so I ate with enthusiasm. I was near the end of my meal when servers were waived away when they tried to take my empty plate, the sushi chefs kept waiving them off, with promise of something special to come. Eventually, they presented me with an ornate roll consisting of krab, avocado, topped with with tuna, black sesame seeds, special sauce, rolled in panko and probably some other ingredients which I have since forgotten, placed on a piece of aluminum foil in a puddle of alcohol which was SET ON FIRE before given to me. I saw another one of these go out, so I think's it's a signature dish. Like I said, I'm not a fan of the orante dishes, but it was still quite a sight, good-tasting, and I appreciated the gesture - I don't think it's regularly part of the sushi deluxe menu. According to a BizJournals article, Steve Young grew up in Japan before leaving in 1990 to start restaurateuring it up all over America. The man obviously has some skills, and though his cuisine might compete with Hana Cafe, I'm more likely to come here for the sushi. It was truly a delight to dine at Wasabi, and I hope others will do the same.

Maybe it would be a good idea for the servers to 'actually' know the menu and what there serving. I would never return to this place, awkward vibes and seating, lack of proper service. DIRTY bathrooms too BTW, Rainbow roll got my girl sick. Be choosy when ordering

My husband and I ate here for the first time. We were not impressed. The waiter talked us out of everything we tried to order. Made a snide comment when I asked him if they had sea urchin. Didn't write our order down and I made a comment about it and he said not to worry he doesn't need to write it out. Needless to say he messed our order. All the sushi was too big to eat in one bite. I took one bite of our play boy roll (talked into this roll) and immediately knew something was off so we didn't eat the rest. When I told him that it was not good he didn't do anything about it. We paid 12.95 for sushi we didn't eat. And I was sick all evening from it. We will not be going back.

Husband and I are a big fan of sushi and after reading the reviews decided to give this place a try. It was a Friday night about 6 pm. When we walked in, the restaurant had about 25-30 people. We waited about a minute at the front door unsure whether to seat ourselves or wait to be seated. We were then greeted and sat at a two top table. The hostess said they did not have any menus and asked us to please wait for one. Looking around, I was a little irritated because there were not that many people in the restaurant. She returned to our table after about 4 minutes with one menu for us to share. I explained to her that we have never been at Wasabi before and would like another menu. Again, I was very irritated. Another 3-4 minutes, she returned with another menu and as she sat it down, looked at me and asked if I wanted an appetizer. I smiled and told her, "I don't know, I have not been able to see a menu yet." Once we got over the menu misstep, our waiter (different than the girl who asked about an appetizer) was really friendly. We told him this is our first experience at Wasabi and wanted to know what he suggested. After asking a few qualifying questions, (do we like cooked/raw - rice/no rice) he offered us some wonderful suggestions. We ordered the Ninja - which is 100% raw and no rice, ordered the Sexy Roll and the Hawaiian Roll. All were wonderfully fresh and awesome! The noise level in the restaurant was a little loud for us (as the restaurant became more busy, they kept turning up the music) and the service a tad bit slow. But because the food was so very good we will definitely be back again. PS - The menu is not kid friendly.

have eaten at wasabi for almost two years almost every weekend, just had the worst experience at any resturant ever at Wasabi, the waiter was a moron that didn't know what he was doing and actually blamed us as customers for the food coming out wrong. The food took an hour then came out incorrect the then sent it back and brought it out again wrong, sent it back for third time and i could see the sushi chief doing something strainge and they then brought out our sushi wrong again, we had ordered a premium sushi roll but all they did was bring out a california roll (cost 3.50) covered with imitation crab to make it look like a premium (cost 12.50) as i brought it to their attention they actually started blaming me and saying i didn't want it. so i had enough canceled my order payed my bill and will never go back. i'm so disappointed, it by far was the best sushi in wichita and now it sucks! service sucks! I have eaten sushi all over this nation and really thought we had a treasure in wasabi, but i guess the presure of the business is making them fail.

Good sushi with awesome variety. The roll that had peanut butter was scrumptious. Nicely decorated, but the blasting ghetto rap was a turnoff. If you're going to play hip hop at least make it tasteful. I like SUMO's sushi restaurant better...

For Wichita, this deserves five stars. The sushi here is totally decent, and the owner is a very sweet lady who was super nice to us. The tea is very good, and the rolls are generously portioned. Prices are great. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Wasabi is one of my favorites, went here when I lived here and go here everytime I come through town for training at FlighSafety. I've had my fair share of sushi around the US and Canada, and living in the Bay Area they compare very well with places out there! Definitely recommend it to anyone wanting great sushi at an awesome price!!

Went for the first time(Saturday @1), it was good, but not great. I had the Red Dragon Roll, which comes out on a plate of flaming alcohol. Neat novelty, but they put enough liquid that it would have taken 30 minutes for it all to burn off. I would come back, but not before trying a few other places.

So the restaurant was not crowded, in fact I almost could have any table I wanted. I was surprised by some of the staffs attitude as to a simple request to sit at a table for one. My initial thought was "the place is practically empty, what do you care?" Having just flown in from Seattle, having a craving for sushi, and seeing the review average I stayed. I gave them 3 stars, instead of 4 because the manager seemed to care and the food wasn't bad...I will look elsewhere the next time I am in town.

Wasabi was very good! The fish was fresh, service pretty fast & the decor was nice too! I was a pig. I ordered Sake (salmon), Hamachi (yellow tail), Unagi (grilled fresh water eel) & Maguro (tuna). I got one roll, a Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab). I also had Veggie Tempura & Miso soup. The best of the sushi was the Hamachi, it was VERY fresh tasting. The Maguro I was not impressed with. It was not that deep red color, very pale and tasted kind of watery. The Sake was good but could have been colder. It seemed kind of warm & limp, but did not taste bad at all. The Spider Roll was very good but I have had better. I would order it again though. Others I have tried have had more of the crab legs in the roll (sticking out at each end!) Tempura & Miso were both tasty! They have a "special" of 1/2 price sushi, mostly basic items, if you order 3 orders. Thing is, their 1/2 price is the typical price of sushi at most sushi restaurants. If the prices were the "full" price then the place would be a rip off! However.. who doesn;t order at least 3 items when getting sushi?? So it works out!

Even by Wichita standards, this place is seriously lacking on all fronts. Maybe I've been spoiled by living close to a certain amazing and delicious west-side sushi establishment, but I was not impressed in the least. I'm surprised because I had heard from others that it was pretty good. So here's my review: Atmosphere: A little tacky and a little dusty. We went at lunchtime and there were maybe 4 other tables at the time, but somehow the table next to us went uncleaned the entire time we were there. Not appetizing to have someone else's leftovers sitting on the table next to you. Service: Good. Our waitress was friendly. Food: Edible...barely. The rolls were falling apart, and the fish did not taste fresh. One of the rolls we ordered had scallops on top and they were awful. Overall: I will not be returning or recommending Wasabi to anyone. Maybe I'm just a snob, but at the very least I would expect a little cleanliness.

This place is awesome and always packed when I stop by. I dont live near this place, but its worth the trip. I get so happy scoping out the menu and its pure torture watching other people's food as you wait for your own. I have not had a bad meal. The sushi is beautiful and the choices are very unique. Please go check this place out. Parking is limited in front of the place, but there is a parking lot very close.

Not recommended. The sushi was not fresh. The fishy smell is an indicator of such. Reviews are just reviews. Improvements come from feedback, yes? Check the 1st amendment if anyone has a problem. Yelp is a review site, so things get reviewed.

First time having sushi in Wichita and I'll have to say, I'm quite impressed and happy that you Yelpers helped me find this place. I got take-out for what it's worth. Anyhow, I attempted to try the Sushi deluxe combo and dragon roll just based on reviews since they didn't have a website. I wasn't a big fan of the sushi because the fish wasn't as tasteful, had a texture like it was frozen and defrosted, and the rice was a little bland; however, given it's Wichita, I can understand. There was one sushi that I liked, I think it was a smoked yellowtail but couldn't tell for sure. Otherwise, the Shrimp tempura that came with the combo and dragon roll were great. So when I do go back, I would stick with the rolls. The inside was spacious and looked like a good atmosphere for small groups of people. I didn't see any setup to accommodate large parties (6 or more). The service was nice even for the brief moment that I interacted with them. I still have to try Hana Cafe, but if this place beats that then I'll definitely have to come back and give this place 5 stars for being the best in WIchita!

Don't get me wrong. The food was great! But I'm pretty sure every roll has cream cheese, even if it's not listed on the menu. However, we made a reservation for seven people a week in advance. But when we got there, we were seated by the restrooms at a table cobbled together with three tiny two-person tables (could have only seated six comfortably). The entire night, members of our party kept having to shift so other patrons could get to and from the bathrooms. While we were still eating, half of our table was asked to get up so the kitchen staff could roll a trash can by, and the again so they could roll it back. Disgusting and rude. Furthermore, we had to wait 15 minutes between the first person's roll being served to the last person's roll being served. We started to wonder if they'd forgotten a few of them. The waitress who served half of the rolls wasn't familiar with any of them and we had to actually sort out who ordered what and which roll looked like it could be what they ordered. Which is where the surprise cream cheese threw most of us off, since most of us were expecting just crab, not crab in cream cheese. The waiter was great; he triple checked our orders, and apologized profusely before any of us could say anything about being seated next to the restrooms. But seating a reserved party next to the restrooms and making them stand twice (while we were all still eating) so a trash can could be rolled by is absolutely inexcusable on the management's part.

Good service and a nice ambiance. I find their specialty rolls to be a little too expensive and unecesarily complex (I prefer Kanai for specialty rolls), but their nigiri are delicious and extremely affordable :)

As a constant traveller, sort of spoiled, with my sushi the only comment I can make here is Wichita is going to be spoiled by this née place, certainly they are marketing with half price sushi, and take advantage of it as by this time next year this place will be the place to be, in fairness to the other places further away from the hyatt my base this time I'm sure they are good and next time here I'll go for the comparison but first impressions being what they are so happy I chose sushi over steak

I don't really eat sushi in the Midwest, but I was really impressed with Wasabi. If I learned anything in LA it's that you never pay too much for sushi. Sure it is a novelty in Kansas but most places charge way too much for a mediocre product. Not only does Wasabi have some of the best sushi in town they have awesome portions at good prices. The Philadelphia roll is amazing.

I get frustrated with how many people seem to think that the quality of sushi is directly proportional to the restaurant's proximity to the ocean. As though the sushi chefs spend the morning catching the fish they will serve that day, as though fish isn't farmed all over the country, as though there is no such thing as a refrigerated truck, as though the freshness of the fish is the only deciding factor in the quality of a place. "Oh, you went to a sushi place in San Diego," they will say, "it must have been fantastic. It's so close to the ocean!" Or, in this case, "Ew, sushi in Kansas? I hope you don't get sick." Bah. Finally, I have a place I can point to in Kansas that serves excellent, if overpriced, sushi. The menu here is overwhelming in its size and in the creativity of its more original offerings. There were so many rolls that I had simply never heard of before and that I was anxious to try. The only thing that was missing was, of course, my favorite, mackerel. Our rather large party ordered a couple dozen rolls, and some various side-dishes. Everything was beautifully and often uniquely presented, but was also noticeably smaller than the pictures in the menu. The pictures, I suppose, always look better than the food, but the actual real-life portions of food were pretty skimpy. My wife and I ended up ordered and eating more rolls of sushi than I think we ever have because of this. The quality of ingredients, the flavor of the rolls, and the originality of the food are all superb. For those things, I cannot recommend this place higher. Some of the original rolls we ordered were ones I wouldn't order again, but that's the price you pay for culinary experimentation. The experiments that succeeded were damn good though. My favorite (and unfortunately the only ones I can remember) being the Kansas roll and the Stonehenge. These were stellar, if very small. The kitchen menu was a bit disappointing. The Miso soup was pathetically bland, and the salad was extremely basic. The yakisoba and tempura were very average, and really not worth ordering in place of one of their wonderful sushi rolls. The bento boxes came with a pretty decent amount of food for the price, and offered a number of options. This is a great place for sushi, but be prepared to order more and spend more than at a typical sushi restaurant. Their portions are very small and the kitchen menu (which I like to use to fill up on cheaper fare) isn't great. I think if I come back here it will be for a beer and a snack, instead of a full meal.

this place is amazing but takes awhile to get served depending on when you go. and you get a free lollipop at the end by the door haha. all the rolls are so good, the discount rolls are buffet quality and not worth your time. the coconut gigolo has peanut butter in it and it sounds weird but is good. i always get this one with strawberry in it too, and its good. they have a baked clam roll that is served warm and its sooo so good with that kewpie mayo. probably one of my favorite restaurants in wichita.

Very pleased! Last night was my first time at a sushi joint in Wichita and Wasabi didn't let down. Reasonably priced and good sized portions. I recommend edamame, one of the cheap sushis, and a roll. The Up To Heaven roll (or closely named) is rolled in cucumber and delicious. There was a bit of a wait. We had a reservation and still waited 10 minutes or so. Make a reservation. Good service and nice atmosphere. I'll be back.

OMG! We get the best food in Wichita & Wasabi definitely falls into that category! Wow. Their menu is wide & varied. We had a couple of wonderful appetizers & a great roll that just put us both into food heaven. The prices were reasonable & the servers were all super friendly & knew the menu quite well. I always try to take reviews with a grain of salt since it's really one person's opinion & depends on that person & their personality, likes & dislikes but the negative reviews from a couple of people seemed to have absolutely zero credibility on the night we went. We're only in town once a year, for a few days each visit, but we will definitely be back to this great restaurant!!!

Went here for a Valentine's weekend dinner and was pleasantly surprised. Half-priced sushi was not what I was expecting on the Saturday before a holiday but even more surprising was how good it was! Granted the rolls didn't look so pretty but it all tastes the same going down - and oh the taste! We started with tempura calamari that was abso-fab (the ponzu fell a bit short). Then came our 5 rolls - 3 of the half-priced variety and 2 special full priced ones. The rice was warm, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (at least it wasn't stale) and the fish was fresh and cut beautifully. It definitely filled us up!

Decent sushi for a town like Wichita. But, some of my nigiri was a bit fishy. Decent edamame. Decent veggie tempura. Good spot for a night out. And everyone knows it, as it was busy for a Tuesday night.

My wife and I love this restaurant! By far, the best sushi in Wichita, they have good fish at reasonable prices. Recently, their portions have gotten smaller (Poki salad), but still an overall good value. Try the Japanese Burrito and the Ninja or To Heaver roll (very similar). They are supposed to be opening a new restaurant on the East side off Rock. Hopefully, they will not suffer the same shrinkage of portions due to the economy. Still, a very nice restaurant with good staff and good food. Our family eats here at least twice a month, even though we live nowehere near downtown!

I normally love Wasabi but the last few visits have been very disappointing. Have to wonder if opening the second restaurant has something to do with this. The service at the Old Town has been horrible the last two times we have been there. I went for a late lunch and the waiter barely acknowledge our table, had to be asked to refill our glasses and never came back to check on us. The "Wasabi" roll was served with a deep fried softshell crab in the middle which smelled so strong and fishy that we were afraid to eat it. When I told the waiter he glanced at me and walked off. The crazy crab roll we ordered was rolled very loosely and fell apart. I have to wonder where the management is? What I like about Kanai is that the owner is always there are really cares about your experience. Wasabi was like this when it first opened but lately there seems to be no management to be found, many of the wait staff have little knowledge about the menu and poor service skills. We will give it one more try before giving up completely.

The wait is long but turnover is fast and they make the sushi very good. The sushi is good and price is very reasonable . This is probably one of the best sushi place in Wichita. I would recommend going here . Remember to call ahead for reservation to avoid waiting in line .

Pleasantly surprised with my experience at Wasabi. The fish was fresh and more importantly the rice was great! I had several pieces of sushi and some tempura...ALL SWEET POTATO tempura is available. How awesome is that!???! The restaurant is conveniently located in the old town area close to several of the hotels in the area which is great for business travelers. Service was quick and friendly. Although I was not able to customize the bento box to my liking, I was able to order what I wanted a la carte.

Authentic, great location, super fresh, very friendly, Since they are new they have half price sushi all over the menu. Everything I had was super yummy and I wish them success. I hope they change the front door though because I could not even tell they were open till I opened the door other than the sign in the window.
