If you were a regular follower of my reviews you might think I have something against the diners of old. "Brad S., just another hipster looking to follow in Anthony Bourdain's footsteps and eat nothing but animal testicles and indigenous animal mush," is surely a very specific something you're saying right now to the screens of your smart devices. But I really don't have anything against the old diners that served the big slices of Americana that got us through the Cold War. It's just that the ones that are still around are largely fueled by the nostalgia of their customers who turn an oblivious blind eye to the fact that their hash browns aren't very brown; their fried chicken is soaked in grease; every damn fry is limp and soggy. And the seasoning - so, so little seasoning through the lot of it all. It was with heavy ennui that I finally broke down and visited Spear's. All the warning signs were there - 55-year old Wichita institution, closed east side location, older clientele - and I was ready to write it off even before I was seated. But against all odds, Spears proved me wrong. Now, don't get me wrong, Spear's is a depressing. Drab, a little dilapidated, and a nonstop stream of oldies playing above your head to remind you that the restaurant is old, the music is old, and chances are very good that you are old as well. Whatever glory days have been bestowed upon Spear's have since passed them by. The menu consists of mostly things you'd expect - sandwiches, burgers, a dozen or so entrees. A large menu like your typical family restaurant, though not as big as I've seen at other establishments. You know it's an old Wichita restaurant because it offers garlic salad as one of the sides. It's not as easy to find a restaurant that still serves it, and it definitely wasn't good enough at Doc's Steak House to make me want to return there. I think I like Spear's version better; not just because it wasn't served room temperature, but it was lighter on the mayo. The cabbage and garlic really shined through. Why it became a member of Wichita's food pantheon alongside the bierock and sancho, I'll never know, but we were off to a good start. Look, I understand the genesis of the name "chicken fried chicken," but that doesn't mean that it doesn't sound extremely stupid when you tell your server that you want to eat it. I was surprised to find just how nicely the chicken breast was fried when it arrived at my table - a little greasy on the plate, sure, and the spots that were covered by the country gravy obviously didn't have much of a chance, but otherwise it was a crunchy, seasoned, and good. I ordered broccoli. I was expecting the frozen waterlogged bits of stump that are plopped onto the plate. I received nothing but fresh florets, boiled and arranged nicely into a little side bowl. Not really seasoned, but still closer to underdone than overdone, which is quite alright with me. All meals come with mashed potatoes. While I am not a mashed potato guy, even these spuds were clearly made fresh, with a bit of skin left to speckle the mound of mash, and - again - seasoned! In fact, the only thing that wasn't very pleasing was that country gravy. Both on my chicken and my potatoes, it was bland. Not even the heavy pepper that you can find at any greasy spoon. I avoided it mostly. If there's one thing for which Spear's is still well-known, it's their homemade pies, which is why I was surprised to see the gloopy mess of a slice of strawberry-rhubarb that was placed in front of me. The internal ingredients were pretty well turned to mush, but the sweet-sour combo and the well-executed crust pointed to this being a fluke. Or maybe the efforts of a lackluster server. Spear's surprised me. This is still simple food and still the diner-type food you could find all over the place back in the day, but it's like they realized that overly greasy food doesn't taste good, and everything could use some seasoning. In fact, I would say that Spear's is the best rendition of some of these dishes that I've seen in quite some time. It's too bad they've been saddled with that outdated reputation, because the food here is worth re-visiting.

Went for the pie with my youngest daughter. She ordered the Oreo Whipped Cream pie, which did not disappoint her in the least. I ordered the Key Lime. What showed up was a crust filled with an electric turquoise whipped filling. Visually, rather offputting, and the texture was all wrong for key lime pie (although once you get past the garish appearance of it, it actually tastes decent). Followed up with a blueberry pie with a nicely flaky crust and ample fruit filling, which I'm not entirely convinced was made on-premises, despite claims of making them "from scratch".

How can you order two pies, give a phone number and then show up at the counter and say, "We are sorry, but the manager told us not to pre-make those pies". Disappointed yes, but angry that I even decided to buy two alternative pies as a last minute solution. NEVER AGAIN.....and when we finally decided that day to eat the banana cream and the bananas were black.

Had thanksgiving dinner here. It was buffet style. Lots of choices and everything was very good. I remember eating here years ago before I moved away. I have to say that I was not disappointed with our decision to come to Spears for our Thanksgiving dinner.
