India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Be assured that the melody of spices will surely bring delight to you.

Food : the aroma and flavor was to the perfection. I tried their Paneer Makhani and butter Chicken. The spice level was a bit high for a medium cookout. I also think that there was too much of a tomato base used in a curry. Thats not the authentic indian style of cooking. Ambience : Too dark for a 7 PM daylight of Wichita. It looked too much open space and lack of interior designs. One thing that bothered me was there was a server (guessing he was new or trainee) but some old guy sitting on chair did not treat him well ( probably the owner or manager). I felt bad because that server could be someone trying make extra cash and i don't like the restaurants where the servers are not treated well by their own people. For this one reason i take the star off.

For as many gains have been made in Wichita's dining scene over the past few years, Indian food can not been considered among them. Still, I'm not as down on Passage to India as others - whatever misgivings may exist with the regular menu, the buffet - something so much a part of the restaurant that they list the hours for it on the door - contains plenty of fresh and varied items from which to choose. Notable kudos go to the vegetable pakora, which were crunchy and not in any way greasy (the same can't be said for the other fried items on the buffet, but they get close). The chicken tikka masala's sauce was of a nice buttery texture, there was a saag dish that wasn't paneer that I really enjoyed, and there was a cabbage masala too that was unexpected and enjoyed. Perhaps the move has reinvigorated the kitchen, or perhaps they're just funneling their efforts into the buffet, but I actually enjoyed the variety here a little better than my experience with Zaytun's. The menu service, on the other hand, remains to be seen.

I went here with a group of friends for lunch and had the buffet. The food was cold and looked as if it had been sitting out all day. I feel like the buffet was way overpriced for the quality that we got. I don't recommend dining here.

This is a chain so basically it is like all the others. Good food. Good service. Good location thank you very much. You know what I love about Indian restaurants? Indian TV showing Indian music videos. They're not meant to be funny but are hilarious. The acting is horrible! Okay back on subject. I would come back and recommend. And if you like Indian music videos, you will not be disappointed.

Passage to India offers the best Indian food Wichita has to offer. Their service has always been fast and friendly. The food is absolutely amazing. You won't leave still hungry. I would, however, be enthralled to see one on the west side. But, I still find myself making the trip from west Haysville every so often.

Overpriced, over salted, and under achieved. Gloomy interior. Poorly executed food. $12 for a lunch buffet is a joke. Most of the dishes were bland and tasted more like a tomato sauce than a curry. I'm still trying to figure out why they had pasta primavera on the buffet. Did not enjoy this one bit. I will never go back.

I have not been to Passage to India for three years now, I think. It's because I like Indian food too much to eat here. I ate in their dingy, uncomfortable dining room fairly frequently from 2002-2008, as it was really the only Indian in town then. It was ok. They'd ask you how you wanted the food spiced and then bring it the same way every time no matter what you asked for. But somewhere toward the end of that time something changed and the food began to drop off a bit. Finally in 2008 I had a truly poor dinner where the food was stale- and bitter-tasting. Everything there is NOT fresh; recent additions to Wichita such as Zaytun, the former Maharaja, and Kababs will easily confirm by comparison that Passage was never particularly good and certainly cannot be accused of offering fresh food. (It's easy to get away with non-fresh food in Indian cuisine as the heavy spices allow it to keep for some length of time...but there is a taste difference.) Feels a bit more like Passage to the Back of the Fridge to me, to be honest. :)

Best Indian food in Wichita. The buffet is wonderful.
(5)Faisal A.
I just had the buffet with my colleagues and it was the worst buffet ever. I took them there and I was so embarrassed to offer them food from our culture The lamb was stinky was not cooked properly. The rice pudding was a cold mix of rice and milk. No a single Item was attractive in terms of quality or look. I will never ever go there again!

Great food and service. Will definitely be going back.

I am from India and this place doesn't satisfy Indian palette. If you are looking for non-americanized true Indian food please skip this place. You can verify that by looking at the persons who reviewed this place!!! If you ask Biryani they will bring left over tandoori pieces chopped up and combined with rice... My american friends that is not Biryani Pros: Good for american palette Cons: Lacks Ethnicity

I have been meaning to post this review for quite some time. After years of enjoying the delicious food here I owe it to the owners! This is the best Indian food that I have ever tasted and I have tried Indian food all across the US and overseas as well. The Sunday buffet has a wide selection of dishes and today the Palak Paneer and Chicken Tika we're outstanding. The naan was out of this world good. I love the meat dishes but If i was ever going to be a vegetarian, i would have to live at Passage to India, the vegetable dishes are so tasty.
(5)Tarun C.
I guess being from Houston I am a bit spoiled however this has got to be the worst Indian food I have ever tasted. Samosa were good but the tandoori mixed grill was absolutely the worst dish I have ever ate at an Indian restaurant. Maybe I should lower my standards living in Wichita..... Also, the interior reminded me of a kids dirty room with clutter everywhere. On a good note, management were very friendly. I guess I will start to cherish my time back home and savor every bite.

I came here for lunch at totally enjoyed the buffet. As a vegetarian, I know there are many great options in Indian cuisine , and passage to india did not disappoint. almost half the buffet was dedicated to vegetarian entrees. Naan was great too Business travelers beware - they do not take american express

Definitely go for the buffet, especially if this is your first foray into Indian food! I used to go to the place across the street until I discovered Passage almost always has either chicken tikka masala or vindaloo. Last time, they had both! The buffet is always full of several different Indian dishes from vegetable korma to kheer. And of course there's plenty of hot toasty naan! They also include cuisine that isn't necessarily Indian, but from their neighbors, like the Bengali dish on the buffet last weekend. They also have a full menu. I've only ordered from the menu once and found the dishes a bit expensive for the portions. The food was still delicious, but I learned to eat Indian food from my Bengali friends--mound the rice and pile the different curries on then scoop away with delicious naan! The service is always quick and efficient, but honestly I don't have a whole lot of interaction with the staff. They're always very busy when you eat buffet, there's just not a lot for them to do! The one staff member I see often is the woman who runs the cash register. She is a sturdy woman, dressed in traditional sari. As soon as you walk in the door, she shoos you over to the banquet room from her booth in the back of the restaurant. She's always seemed intimidating. But this last time, she was friendly and sat with me while I waited for a friend and her daughter. Nothing brings out friendliness like a cute kid!

I LOVED THIS PLACE! We just stopped in to try it & we were so pleasantly surprised by the quality and rich flavor. The employees were very prompt and courteous. There was a buffet set up for lunch so we were able to try a variety of food & we mmmm'd and oooooh'd and ahhhh'd all the way through the first plate! Seconds were a must have. Dessert was great too. I will definately go back.
(5)Howard C.
I've definitely had better. Actually the restaurant Maharaja here in WIchita is better. The food here is ... so so. I eat Indian food frequently and we make our own at home. This is a place I probably will not visit again.
(2)Erin W.
Went there with a friend a while back. I believe it was a Tuesday or Thursday night. I've had much better Indian food in other cities, but this is my first experience in Wichita. The staff was really great... very friendly and they appeared to have many regulars in the place. I'd go there again, but I'd really like to try other options in town.
(3)Regina K.
We were there for lunch buffet and I was happy to find the food wasn't toned down for american tastebuds! It was full of flavor! I especially enjoyed the lentil soup, chana masala, beef vindaloo and the freshest naan! The tandoori chicken was so tender, it fell off the bone!
(4)B L.
I really disliked this restaurant. We paid a whopping $60 (2 adults and 1 child) for seekh kababs (not seekh kababs. Maybe 1-2 turkey sausages chopped up and mixed up with sauteed onions and tomatoes!), chicken biryani (also pretty unrecognizable), kheer (again, not kheer - just skim milk with rice at the bottom - no thick texture), chicken 'kadhi' (kadhai? because it really was just a curry). I haven't paid so much for restaurant food in a long time - and for food that was so nondescript. The problem with a lot of indian restaurants is that they try their hand at punjabi/north indian meat dishes, and they do not do a good job. Or even make authentic dishes. I wish they wouldn't use the titles of dishes they don't actually approximate. Just call them 'chicken curry' or "indian rice.' Some of the newbies won't be able to tell the difference. As for South Asians, - maybe we should just go to PF Chang's. Oh, and if the owner's going to watch crappy Hindi soaps, perhaps he could spare the rest of us and turn the volume down a little. I lost some grey cells in there.

The lunch buffet was delicious, just be careful of small bones hidden. Nothing was labelled so have no idea what I ate to order from menu later. The tortilla-like things were really good, just needed to keep more on the buffet, kept running out even though there were only 10 of us in the whole place over lunch hour. When you first walk in, apparently you're supposed to seat yourself, even though there's a large sign asking you to 'Please wait to be seated'. Was really looking forward to dessert. I have a sweet tooth, plus my friend told me how good the pudding in the salad bar was. I had been eyeing that bowl of pudding nicely chilling on the salad bar ice. Since it wasn't labelled either, I thought it was a salad dressing. Since it was nearly empty and never refilled, I was very disappointed NOT to be able to have a full bowl nor go back for seconds. We never did get a ticket, although our server was attentive in clearing our plates & filling our drinks. You have to go pay at the register. We may have been overcharged since my friend had tea and I had water, we didn't have a ticket and no prices were posted anywhere. The lady checking us out barely spoke English and wasnt audible anyway. She never rang anything up, just took the cash. The food earned my 1st visit here three stars, but could've been more given the other challenges that lessened my positive dining experience.
(3)Dean C.
I was very disappointed with my meal from Passage to India. First I was over charged, when I explained the excuse was that it was a new menu (looked ancient to me). The price was very high - nearly $10 for a take away meal. There was little Chicken in my meal, and the Chicken that was in there was the dark cheap meat. I would consider myself an Indian food connoisseur and this was what I would classify as the McDonnals of India cuisine. I shall not be going back.

We are spoiled by all the good Indian food in the Greater Boston area, so to find a nice place with really delicious food in Wichita was a special treat. Some dishes were familiar, others were new to us. All that we ordered was terrific. They seasoned as we requested -- some like it hot, some do not. The portions were ample, the service attentive, but not overly so, and the prices very reasonable. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Wichita.
(4)Vivian K.
This is the second time I've been here and will come back again. I had chicken pakora and palak pakora for an appetizer. They were both great, but I enjoyed the palak pakora better out of the two. This looks like a Indian, spinach funnel cake. Chicken Tikka Marsala seems to be a popular dish that's ordered. I would recommend ordering this spicy. Taste like a creamy curry with cilantro. I've had the coconut curry and I really liked that one, because it reminds me of the flavors in a Filipino dish we make. Both dishes were served with rice. I love me some warm carbs, so I ordered some garlic naan with the meal. Light Indian flatbread about the size of a large pancake. Good food partnered with good help and friendly ownership.

Absolutely the best Indian food in the Wichita area, I've traveled through many states and cities looking for a experience that compares and maybe it's just "Mama's cooking" to me but Passage to India always shines through as the best! I've never been disappointed by a single dish I've had here but for any new comers to Indian, I will always recommend this restaurant! Vegan/vegetarian dishes debatably better than anywhere else in town and for the meat-eaters out there they have a vibrant variety of food! (Including my personal favorite, Chicken Tikka Masala - a dish with flavorful Chicken cooked in a clay oven and served in a thick, creamy tomato based sauce) Come out and support a local business with quite possibly some of the best food you will ever eat! I promise you will leave painfully full and happy and still with leftovers!
(5)Jessy T.
Bland. Not terrible. Just terribly lacking. Where is the coriander, the cardamom, the deep curry, the heat? It's as if everything surprising and vibrant in the cuisine has been flattened to fit a rather tame palate. Still, it's different from many other restaurants in Wichita and is clean, pretty, and boasts good service. If you've never had great Indo-Pakistani food--you might just love it. But I personally would like to see a little more flare.
(2)Kim W.
Lunch buffet was really good. There are many different selections of dishes. The ones that have meat are typically dark meat chicken. There's one lamb dish that is quite enjoyable as well. However there are some pieces that are tough and dry. My favorite is the Chicken Tikka Marsala with rice or naan. A dish that I wish was on the line is a saag dish. The lunch buffet is good to bring friends who don't quite know what to order or just in general have never tried Indian cuisine before. There is a wide variety to choose from. For what Wichita has to offer in the Indian cuisine realm, this is by far my favorite. Service is good and attentive. There is some awkward moments while walking to the buffet line, some of the staff just kinda uncomfortably stare.
(4)Sophie M.
this is the best Indian food in town HANDS DOWN. it is authentic and the service is always incredible. aloo gabi and aloo mattar are my favorite dishes and the cherry cashew coconut naan is brilliant! all of the different flavors come through so nicely. I highly recommend this amazing restaurant!!
(5)Wenuje D.
This place deserve "0" STARS!! Worst Indian food I've eaten in my whole life. All taste same and bland. and make sure you DON'T TIP THE SERVER FOR HIS/HER SERVICE!, because they won't get any tips they all go to the greedy ass owner.
(1)Toni B.
This is truly the best Indian Restaurant in Kansas. This is NOT a chain, as one review has indicated. This is family cooking. I have known the family for years. Every time I go back to Wichita it is such a pleasure to see the family and enjoy a wonderful meal. If you love great Indian food, you will LOVE A Passage to India. They cater to the individual taste, so they welcome modifications to any recipe. Their buffet (when available) is also exquisite. Always a pleasure. Please visit them if you are in Wichita Kansas. I highly recommend them.
(5)Syed Sohaib T.
Very bad customer service. Owner is rude and have no idea what a good customer service is. Food is also very mediocre. There are much better places to eat in Wichita than this.
(1)Corey T.
The food tastes great, while it might disappoint some who are spoiled by better options in other cities. The lunch buffet I would rate as a 2. It was rather disappointed. The flavors were muted, there were few options (especially vegetarian options -- there were like two), and it was rather overpriced. The dinner menu, I'd rate as a 4. The menu selection is larger, and the food tasted much better than the buffet, and it was a fair value. There's another place in town I go for lunch buffets, but I think PTI has a better dinner menu. Overall, the place would benefit from competition, which Wichita lacks for Indian food, yet the food's still good. 4 stars dropped down to 3 because IMO the lunch buffet should be avoided.
(3)Katherine D.
I have fond memories of the first time I tried Indian food, a vein of cuisine I know make at home at least twice a month. That memory was at Passage to India. The food is delicious, there are so many options to try, The Naan! Amazing. Now, like many of my faveroite places it is family owned. It is not fancy, it is not a place you go for the atmosphere. The seats are uncomfortable, and the bathrooms kinda creepy. Service is usually pretty good, but if you want a drink order a beer. I skip dessert I am not sure if I just do not like Indian desserts of if that is the one food weakness they have. It is a fun place to eat and introduce people to new foods ( be warned people either love or hate Indian food.) My father is basically John Wayne + Hank Hill.... so yeah he hated it, my stoner friends were also not impressed. Perhaps their palates have changed since it has been over 7 years. Anyway, try them, support them! Be prepared for bad ass Bollywood videos on a t.v. Oh and if you are a whitey like me and want it spicy? Really specify they, they wont believe you.
(4)Peter S.
Love this place! I always look for these hidden gems. Not the most beautiful and fancy location and outside but the service and authentic flavor definitely make up for it. Both the buffet and ordering if the menu are worth it. I drive 90 miles to come eat here.
(4)Torin A.
Great Indian food! I have been going there Saturday afternoons with friends to take advantage of the buffet. I like to try new dishes and this seems to be the best way to do it. Everything I have tried has been an adventure and have very much enjoyed most of it. Great place to take a large group. Very attentive staff.
(4)Reed N.
This is a solid lunch buffet. There were at least 5 vegetable selections and 5 meat selections. I was really impressed with the chicken tikka masala. This dish is supposed to have tandoori chicken in the sauce... i.e. baked first. Most places are too lazy and just put boneless breast or thigh in the sauce. I usually avoid getting too much of it. But, they do it right here. The sauce was also buttery and delicious.
(4)Andy S.
I have been to Passage to India almost every time I have been to Wichita and every time the food is delicious. I tend to travel with a few guys who are from India and they mostly do the ordering from the table but everything that is brought out is fresh and made from scratch. Staff is attentive but not overbearing and let you enjoy your food and friends. I have only been for dinner but I plan to try the buffet nex time I am in town.
(5)Miss Missy G.
As far as Indian restaurants go in Wichita this one is by far the best! It is difficult to find tasty places to eat in Wichita that actually have flavorful meals and are not part of a chain. This is one of my my fave places!
(4)Allison P.
My family and I have been going to Passage to India for years - when I am back visiting there is nothing that I look forward to more than some yummy and comforting Indian food. The service is always great - even though the buffet sometimes gets packed there is never a wait and servers are fast, friendly and attentive. If you are looking for a waitstaff that is going to hover around, pester you and hold your hand then don't go to Passage to India - they get you what you need when you need it and don't bother you otherwise. If you are new to Indian food I would suggest checking out the lunch buffet - they typically have at least one of each vegetarian, chicken and beef entrees as well as several sides, a soup and salad option and a dessert. Some of the dishes usually contain some spice but it is more of a residual heat - so don't be afraid of the spice! Since we've been going here forever they know to bring my dad an order of the pickled vegetable which is not featured on their lunch buffet. It is a couple of dollars extra but I highly recommend getting it to enhance your Indian experience (avoid the lime and lemon rinds, cut into small pieces and swirl around in any dish to add an exotic and unique flavor). My favorites on the buffet are the rich, creamy, yogurt based vegetable korma (a great vegetarian option), their spinach entrees (sometimes they combine spinach and beef and sometimes it is spinach and paneer a type of Indian goat's milk cheese) and the chicken vindaloo or chicken tikka are typically a good spicy option. On the side I love the crispy fried pokura veggies, fresh baked Naan and Tandoori Chicken. Grab a spoonful of the Raita on the salad bar to help cool your palate if you get into something spicy! In all of the years coming to Passage there have only been two occasions that they have featured Galub Jamun on their buffet (little fried chickpea doughnut balls drenched in spiced honey) - they do have them on their regular menu and I highly recommend getting an order if you are in the mood for something sweet. They are the best thing on earth!

This is a gem of an Indian restaurant. Wichita is generally a pretty barren landscape when it comes to ethnic restaurants, and Indian even more so. To my knowledge, there are only two Indian restaurants in all of Wichita. Indian cooking is pretty exotic fare for most Wichita inhabitants, and the great thing about that is that even on a Friday or Saturday night you can get a table at Passage to India without a wait. The place is never empty, having a loyal following, but it's never jam packed either. The food here really is wonderful. It's always well prepared, consistent, with spices and tastes that are perfect. They also have a broader range of dishes than is typical for Indian restaurants. For example, they have a delicious Madras soup that is a tomato based soup with Indian spices. Unique flavors, spicy, and it always hit the spot. Their main dishes also have a broader range of preparation styles and distinct sauces. I especially like their chicken tikka masala. Add some Indian rice, naan and a mango lassi, and you have the perfect Indian meal. The service is always professional and friendly, and with low turnover, they get to know you over time if you are a regular. The prices are reasonable and typical for Indian restaurants. The interior is nothing special to write home about, but it's functional. Overall I can't say I have anything to complain about after coming here every few weeks for the past three years. This has become one of my favorite Indian restaurants, and it compares well against my Indian favorites in California, of which I'm there every other week.
