Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Food was ok but service was horrible!! When we walked in every person that walked by was complaining about the service and we just thought they were old crusty people. By the end of the lunch we turned into the crusty. They were very nice but as far as food service, the worst!

What a fun atmosphere!!! Wednesday Karaoke makes it very family friendly and fun. They have weekly drink specials as well as daily specials. The salsa is pretty decent and spicy. Ordered the fajita quesadilla and it was on point with real Spanish rice. The restaurant can get kind of hot but it is one of the better true Mexican food places that I have been to in Topeka. The do have 0.99 lunch margaritas as well. They have a full bar with dois Equis both lager and amber on tap!!! I would recommend you give it a try.

Great atmosphere. Good varieties of food and drink. Staff very friendly and helpful. I'm not seeing what others have posted. There space is very open and inviting. Was really surprised since its a strip mall. Will most likely become a regular after having poor experiences at other local Mexican restaurants.

Run! We must have visited on a night when the busboys/girls were on strike. We only saw one table cleared the entire meal, even though other wait staff walked by dirty tables with empty hands on the way back to the kitchen. By the time we left, every single empty table had dishes still sitting, yet people were waiting to be seated. Very poor service. Not friendly at all. Did not check back on us. We are pretty sure our order didn't go in after it was taken because 15 minutes later...the wait staff came back to confirm our order. Music was loud and had a lot of static, but no employee seemed to notice. We would have asked for the volume to be turned down or completely off, but that would have required someone to actually visit our table. Food was good at a good price. But we decided before the food arrived, we would NEVER GO BACK due to the chaotic and stressful environment. (Eating out is suppose to be fun, not stressful!)

I went here a couple weeks ago with a friend for lunch. I should have recalled that about a year ago I walked in on Cinco de Mayo and walked out after about fifteen minutes of no service... But I stayed. I had a coupon that gave a free order of chicken or beef nachos with the purchase of an entree and a beverage. The chicken on the nachos was definitely from a can. It was absolutely DISGUSTING. Smelled like tuna, had a strange, canned flavor. Buh. I ordered the lunch order of shrimp fajitas and literally got six pieces of shrimp with that meal. Couldn't get a drink refilled for nothin' and there were hardly any people there!! The people who say the food is great are KIDDING themselves. I will never return.

Great food. Awful service. You literally have to seek out the staff to get help. Most of the time l, the food is worth the wait, but it can be a very nerve wracking to wait so long. You've been warned.

My first time at El Maguey was for a birthday party for 8 year old great grandson. I ordered a Tamale Deluxe. The serving was enormous. I ate the big tamale which was one of the best I have ever eaten at a commercial restaurant. I took the 2 taquitos home with me and enjoyed them for lunch the next day with the rice and beans that I could not eat the night before. The second time I dined at El Maguey, I ordered the Gordo Special. Fourteen very large shrimp on a bed or Mexican rice, tomatoes and fresh avocado. It was delicious! Two weeks later, I met girlfriends there for a "Girl's Night Out" and enjoyed another serving of the Gordo Special. My husband enjoys the Chili Colorado which is a very large serving of grilled steak cooked in a nice red sauce and including rice, beans and tortillas. On my second visit, I ordered a frozen margarita. Out comes a huge delicious margarita. It was very tasty (and very strong with tequila, but no complaining about that). The servers at this restaurant are the most gracious and attentive for a chain Mexican restaurant in the area. They were very attentive to the large group at the birthday party for my gr-grandson, giving him a sombrero to wear while they all sang "Happy Birthday". they even got a second sombrero for his 8 year old cousin to wear, so he wouldn't be left out of the fun. I asked them to sing the Mexican Birthday song which they did with all of the servers in the restaurant. My Gr-Grandson didn't understand what they were singing to him, but I certainly did. I greatly appreciate that they went above and beyond to entertain my grandsons and keep the old folks happy as well. The servers for my second and 3rd visit were just as attentive and accommodating to us. The menu is very large. There is a special section for Lunch size portions which are served Monday through Friday. Menu items include appetizers such as nachos, quesadillas, guacamole dip. They offer salads including Taco salad and Fajita Taco salad. They have a large variety of burritos and many combination plates. Specialty items include Chalupas, Chimichangas, Chile Verde, a variety of enchiladas. Desserts include Flan, Sopapillas, Fried Ice Cream and Cheesecake. This is a large, very clean restaurant with the typical Mexican decoration. There are lots of booths and many tables, plus a separate bar area or for private parties. What sets this place apart from the other similar restaurants is the wonderful wait staff. The "Girl's Night Out" group has decided to meet there again in a few weeks and bring the "boys" along this time to share in the fun and good food. I definitely will return in the next few weeks.

Never eat here. The food is horrible. Pasta sauce is what they put on the food. Chips have no taste. Service is bad too. I don't even know what they did to the rice. Don't try it tho.

The food is great. But service is average and the wait time when they are busy is ridiculous. I just don't get why it takes so long.

Every time we come to Topeka we eat here. Good good.....we've tried different things and everything has been good! Service is good too.

My family's favorite Mexican place. We always have good service, and really enjoy the food. We eat here at least twice a month, but typically not at busy times, and always on weekends.

El Maguey is a another addition in the line of Mexican restaurants in Topeka. Im sure its owned by the same group that owns all the El Mezcal restaurants. But the food is pretty decent, the staff is attentive and they have decent lunch specials. I really enjoy their chicken enchildas and their pork verde is delicious as well. Their refried beans can be a bit soupy and their rice is precooked but for a quick lunch its pretty decent. Its not the greatest but its not too bad either.
