El Atoron is one of my favorite mexican restaurants by far. I first had the pleasure of eating here about 4 years ago. I didn't even know it existed but the group I was with decided to try it out. The decor inside isn't exactly eye pleasing, it being that the ceiling is painted in a Key Lime green and the rest of the lower walls is wood, but I don't come for the decor and the food more than makes up for the decorations. I had the fajitas molcajete which is beef, chicken, bacon, chorizo, peppers and onions. It also comes with mushrooms and shrimp but I ask for those to be left out cause I don't like them. This combination of ingredients makes a fajita that in incomparable to any other I've ever had. Since that first time I've probably frequented this restaurant at least 20+ times over the last 4 years. I always order the same thing described above but whoever I'm with usually has something different and I try theirs. I have yet to try anything on the menu that wasn't good. They salsa they serve is awesome, and the guacamole is so good I actually ask for extra which is crazy because I hate guac from pretty much any other place and in general. Even the refried beans taste better than the out of the can kind you find at chain mexican places like Carlos O'Kellys. Having been in town here for 5+ years I have been to each and every Mexican restaurant in town, and we have a bunch, and El Atoron is still my go to place when I want authentic Mexican cuisine.

Came her for dinner - I will be honest, I'm pretty wary of Mexican food served outside of Texas, but this place was not too bad. Our service was slipshod, but the water was young and apparently a little overwhelmed. Once all of the food got to the table it was good. The queso had a nice zip, but I made the mistake of ordering the red sauce on my enchiladas. The red sauce was very thin and pretty tasteless, compared to what I'm used to. Overall, I would return, and it was nice to sit in the front window and watch the traffic on Santa Fe.

Quick seating for our family group of 20 - great food, service, and tolerance for kids! Thanks

worst food I've ever had in my life and I am not young! This is the first time I have ever written a review and I am doing it because I feel it is my civic duty. I ordered the chili relleno and they were wrapped in what seemed to be pancake batter and my husbands fajitas where mediocre at best. We spent $30 and could barely eat the food.

First time visit that was pretty good...nothing outstanding, but certainly better than a fast food Mexican place. atmosphere was ok. When your looking for a decent meal at a reasonable price, this is a good place.

I don't give a lot of 5 stars but I thought this place was pretty awesome and feel the other reviews are downplaying this restaurant. Food was great tasting, came in large portions. Margaritas were only $3 for 16oz and tasted good (add 50 cents for flavors). I will concur that the free nachos and salsa were mediocre, but they issued separate salsa bowls for each person (most places give one for the table). I would definitely recommend this place and would come again if I'm ever in the area. Staff was really friendly and the restaurant location was huge and had a pool table in the back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
