I ate in the back bar once and have had carry out pizza twice. The pizza has become my favorite, albeit lite on the sauce (IMO)--something about the crust and cheese they use. Crust is nice and crisp; the flavor imparted by the cheese is definitely unique--my guess is you'll love it or hate it. The other items on the menu are very simple and at a value price-point. I've had the lasagna and Italian beef--both were above -average quality and excellent values when considering the price! The wine list is below average while the bar is excellently stocked for an establishment of this nature. I'll definitely be back for the cheap, good meals--and, of course, the pizza!

Who wouldn't love this place? So unique, and delicious! Great memories at this Joint! You won't be disappointed!

The all time, most incredible, absolute most wonderful pizza you will have ANYWHERE. I'm an old fart now, but it's one of my favorite childhood memories - so much so I worked there for 1.5 weeks when I was 14. But, I didn't want to ruin a good thing, so I ended up returning to my "dedicated patron" status rather than remain with the the quasi-incestuous "employee" moniker I donned for 10 days. Anyway, it's the most outrageously incredible food you'll have in this hemisphere. Word to the owners: Please relocated to the Mid-Pacific. PS - word to you mutha, the restaurant is actually in Shawnee, NOT in Overland Park (though 6 of 1, half-a-dozen of the other).

Whether or not you like this place will depend on a few key sensibilities: 1. Don't like St. Louis-style pizza? Skip it. Look, Provel is basically a white Velveeta stand-in, a processed cheese food blended from provolone, cheddar, and Swiss. It's gooey and melty, and has a unique little bite due to the Swiss. But, yep, it's processed cheese, which is not everybody's thing. I used to not be a big fan, but it's grown on me, and though it's not my first pick, at times it hits the spot. Also, thin, crispy crust, as is traditional, although it's not quite a true cracker crust. 2. Not the place to go if you're offended by a place that's an 80s throwback. Not a post-ironically divey, hip, vintage 80s throwback. A legitimate 80s throwback that just literally hasn't been updated since the 80s, for better and for worse. Not fancy, at all, and ambience is not of particular concern. Just an old-school family joint. A bit rundown, but friendly and honest. This place is a pizza parlor that hearkens back to my childhood. It's not a cool artisan pizza place selling craft beers with carefully planned, artful decor. It has cracked vinyl booths, butcher block tables, it's dim inside and minimally decorated, and you order at the counter off a menu board. It's just satisfying pizza. we got plain cheese and supreme, and both were tasty. They did take about 25 minutes to make, and when we got them, they were a touch overdone for my husband and FIL's taste, but I like my processed cheese food little bubbly and browned, so it worked for me. Very nice lady behind the counter, fair pricing, good brewed iced tea.

I haven't eaten here since the mid 80's and it doesn't look like anything has changed or been updated. Service is a little confusing if you've never been there before. Order at counter and they bring food and drinks to you. Even though there were not many people there it took awhile to get the pizza. Many take out orders. It seems the way to do it is call in your order before you get there. Pizza itself is St. Louis style. Thin crust and provel cheese, I like it but not everyone does. Crust is not quite as thin as I remember but I will order take out from here again.
(4)Stephanie P.
This is another St. Louis style pizza place. There was just nothing so special about it. It's average and a good place to eat when fighting those nasty hangover blues. Three important factoids: 1. The pizza was alright. 2. The inside was kinda filthy with a healthy serving of flies. 3. The price was right.
(3)James M.
great pizza! a bit different than most but tasty! they have been around in the same joint for years! check out the hole in the wall bar next door that has no sign on it lol ! keep it rockin baby

For all you folks that come here and give Johnny C's 1 or 2 stars, there's something debilitating about your tongue that makes you leave pathetic and incompetent reviews. Don't come here if you heard Johnny C's was the best pizza in KC and you were expecting the ambiance of hooters. Don't come here if you heard Johnny C's was the best pizza in KC and you were expecting Applebee's. Who are you people? Don't come here if you heard Johnny C's was the best pizza in KC and you were expecting your same old Pizza Hut or dominos family outing and Johnny didn't fit the bill. Let's deal with the facts - 1. Johnny C's ships more pizza across the country every week then your mom (fill in the blank) 2. Johnny C's has been making pizzas longer then you've been eating pizza. Don't hate. 3. Johnny C's looks like it's from the 80s inside. It was. It is. Don't hate. 4. Johnny C's arguably has the best homemade ranch in the country. If you haven't had it and are against dipping your pizza in it, let's face it then, you're probably from Chicago. Welcome to Kansas City. 5. Johnny C's still has some arcades from the 80's. See #3 above. 6. If you sit in a booth and your butt seems to dip down into a hole, well, you're welcome. I've been warming those up for you for the last 20 years. Tipping my hat to you Johnny C's...and throwing it at all those who don't appreciate everything you've done.

My family has been eating Johnny C's pizza for years. The pizza is soooo good. The crust is thin and crisp, and the cheese (provel) is perfectly creamy and melty. The Johnny C's Deluxe pizza is my favorite -- it has sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms, and onions. The small side salads are good too, and only $2.55. The lettuce is iceberg lettuce, and it's topped with shredded provel and slices of pepperoni, and it also has a crunchy cracker on top. One thing I would change about Johnny C's: beer is served in plastic beer mugs. A Boulevard Pale Ale in a plastic mug just doesn't taste as good as it would in glass! The inside of the building looks pretty bad, actually, with worn booths, old tables, and severely outdated decor. If you can look past it, though, this might become your new favorite pizza place!

I like to go to Johnny C's on occasion. It is St. Louis style so if you aren't aware of what that means you may not like it unless you are prepared. Typically St. Louis style pizza has a "cracker" crust and they typically go light on the sauce (for my tastes anyway). I have found that the toppings are usually put under the cheese - ah the cheese. Well, this is what really sets St. Louis style pizza apart. The cheese is what they call Provel. It is a processed cheese. Yes, like Velveeta or Kraft singles but is apparently a blend of cheddar, provolone, and swiss. Sounds weird right? Well, it is, but the provel adds a certain creaminess and also provides a nice browning aspect. If you've never had St. Louis style or have only had Imo's, I'd recommend trying George's pizza first, but I digress. My recommended pizza at Johnny C's would be with mixed cheese (the blend of provel and mozz), extra sauce, pepperoni & italian sausage, and cooked slightly well done (for the browning).
(4)Liz L.
My secret delight! Yes Provel cheese on a cracker but it's actually a thin THIN crust pizza but the flavors are amazing. Big chunks of sausage make this a 4 star pizza. Would be 5 star but I'm still looking for the perfect perfect pizza and I think that's a life long goal dude!
(4)Martin H.
I used to love this place. I'm talking 20 years ago. But it has really gone downhill over time. These days, they make their pizzas dry and slow, I'm sad to say.
(2)Duffman K.
This was my first experience with StL style pizza and I have to say it was pretty good. I like a nice crispy pizza and my pizza was perfect in this regard - crispy, golden brown on the edges, but not burnt at all. I've heard people complain about the cheese on StL pizza before, but I didn't notice much of a difference and thought the pizza tased great. I don't agree with other reviews on here that say that the place is dirty, its just not upscale, but that's why they are serving pizza and not filet mignon. Good selection of beer, although I didn't like that my draft was served in a plastic mug so I got a bottle for my second beer. Prices are very reasonable for the pizza and the beer was also moderately priced. Will definitely be back.
(4)CC C.
Great food. Great staff. 70s meets 90s as in 70s decor meet 90s prices. Tip the staff well because it is hard to make a living on 20% tips at these prices. You can call ahead for your dine-in order to save a few minutes during the lunch hour.
(5)Max H.
We've been going to Johnny C's regularly now for a few years, and it has become one of our favorites in the area. I wish it was a bit closer to home, but it is definitely worth the drive. Everything about Johnny C's is old school, but it tastes great. The simple side salad with Provel is a start to the meal. The large size pizza is enough for the two of us to have leftovers for lunch the next day. We try to stay away from the side with the pool table if there are any kids nearby. They can get to be obnoxious and more than once we've come close to a pool cue in the side of our head. Overall the best choice in KC for StL style pizza and one of the best for pizza overall.
(5)Derek M.
Wow I'm surprised to see so many 4-5 stars ?!?!? This place is not good at all first and last time going there . The pizza was almost burnt and it took forever for the pizza to come out during lunch time I might add , I went with two other people and they thought the same thing about the pizza too. I have had better frozen pizza, and too add the tables are so old and gross you can put you're hand on the table and it sticks on it gross never will I go back do not waste you're time , would of had better pizza down the street at"pizza street" yikes!!!!!
(1)Melissa B.
Hadn't been in years, and it is still a great place to eat. Can't beat the prices either.
(5)Megan H.
I use to live right next to this place and the two years I did I never tried it until I met my husband. He said it was one of his favorite Pizza places and I had to go. I am so glad I did. The Pizza is wonderful. I believe it's St. Louis style. Very thin crust awesome flavors and has an unusual creamy texture, due to the cheese I'm sure. The inside is very dated, but it really doesn't matter because they make up for it with their awesome Pizzas!
(4)Chris R.
This is one of those places I wish we thought about more often. They never advertise, so the only time I think about them is when I drive by. (Which isn't all that often.) But I love the food and the extremely low-key ambiance. We don't have St. Louis-style too often. The only other option in town that immediately comes to mind is Imo's. (Though I'm sure there are probably many others.) But we've never been disappointed with the Johnny C's offerings. Service never bowls you over, but it's never bad, either. Oddly enough, I think our favorite aspect of the place is it feels like you've stepped back into the late 70s/early 80s. It's usually very quiet, so you can just enjoy a pleasant meal.
(4)Brandon B.
Came in for lunch after I tried unsuccessfully to have lunch at Pour House across the street (never got service). The one waitress was a friendly lady who helped me through my first ordering experience. Even a regular customer have me a friendly suggestion... Neither was overbearing. I ordered buffalo wings which were very good, a soda, and a pizza to go. Very reasonable at $17 for all. The place has a dated decor that I found charming and suits this place. Almost gave it four stars for a hint of a musky scent, but the exceptional service prevented me from doing so. I'll be back.
(5)Calvin M.
If you like st louis style pizza (which you should) you need to try Johnny C's. The provel cheese and their sauce are an unbeatable combination.
