I want to like Freebirds, but I have to say that Chipotle kicks them to the curb. The decor is very in-your-face cool, what with the motorcycle bursting through the wall & the phony pin-up art & all that; it's just trying too hard. It was noisy & crowded when I stopped in for lunch, with a very long and slow-moving line. Lots of employees behind the counter, but they weren't too organized. I liked the options that were available -- different sizes, different tortillas. I didn't like the way the staff continually questioned my choices. "Plain tortilla, not spinach or cayenne? Are you sure?" Dude, if I wanted spinach, I would have said so. Somehow, between the tortilla station & the meat station (which is the FIRST HANDOFF for pete's sake) they lost my burrito; so guess what, I was holding up the line while they heated up another tortilla. Nice selection of salsas, but then the guy at the end of the line manhandled my poor little burrito, smashing & squishing it very aggressively, and twisting & poking the ends of the foil wrap so it looked like a big silver blunt. It was quite nauseating to watch. Then they tried really hard to upsell me a "pot brownie" and a margarita. I found the latter to be quite offensive -- if I clearly say that I'm not drinking alcohol, don't continue to joke with me that you're going to pour one anyway, you won't tell my boss, snicker. Hey, Mr. Margarita Guy, how do you know I'm not in recovery, or my religious beliefs prohibit alcohol, or what other reason I might have to decline a drink? You can't know, so STFU, douche. It just rubbed me the wrong way 100%, totally insensitive. Anyway, after all that, the burrito was pretty good (although it looked like hell from being smashed so hard.) About the same as Chipotle, truth be told. But with the service at Freebirds being so definitely sub-par... guess where my next lunch burrito will be from.

My son and I have a standing dinner date on Thursday nights. My husband bowls/plays softball on Thursday's and long ago I started - mommy no cook night - on Thursday. Recently, Chipotle has been our go-to place for dinner. A few weeks ago, we decided to try Freebirds for a change of pace. There are several sizes of burritos which is a bit overwhelming at first. It seems that the burritos are about a dollar more here than Chipotle for approximately the same size, but there are several additional ingredients from which to choose. My son is not super adventurous, so I think he ended up with the same sort of burrito he normally gets. Freebirds has white rice or spanish type rice but no brown rice.I ordered the tacos. I like their hot salsa better than Chipotle's but their chips weren't as good.. The food was good and the service was decent. Bottom line, if you like a variety of ingredients, this is probalby more your style over Chipotle.

We had dinner here recently and it was good. A nice alternative to chipotle. They have re-fried beans as an option, which i like. Also a number of different salsas. Also liked the decor. I want to update this review because 5 stars would say i absolutely loved it. I thought freebirds was okay but if I want a burrito im still going to chipotle so to be fair i have to be more honest with my rating.

The main issue I had with this place was the parking, and the table space. Cram. Packed. Also, the noise level is pretty loud there. I thankfully only have tried this as call-in-to-go, but I was still shocked by these things. Regardless, I had a good experience. The food was timed and made just about the time I was coming in, registers moved fast. The options here are what blew me away. I love Chipotle, don't get me wrong, but this is definitely a healthier alternative. Things tasted so fresh, compared to some of the times I have been to Chipotle. Pleased with my order and the service. Whether it will be Freebirds or Chipotle next time though, is still a tough one! Both delicious.

I trust my friend Kay L. a lot so I read through her whole review before writing mine just to make sure I had considered everything - because I had planned to write them a good review. I still am going to - the difference is that I'm going to validate all her complaints as legitimate and something that I hope the management addresses. Now, on to my experience, which was awesome. For those of us who love Chipotle, or its queso-adding cousin, Qdoba, Freebirds is an overload. We have tons of choices for what to add to our burrito, including BACON. They have a smaller size of burrito available than Chipotle's default one-size-eats-all. They even have different tortillas and sauces and veg. I could go on. Main quibble here: I hope you don't plan to eat here - there's close to no room in the dining area and between 11:30-12:30 you should probably plan on the "to-go" plan. Unfortunately, this part of Mission doesn't offer too many places to retreat to with your food - other than your car.

This rating is based on a fast food type of restaurant, in terms of restaurants overall it would get a 3. The most obvious place to compare this place with is Chipotle. I would give Chipotle 2 stars for their decreasing quality and amazing ability to give me heartburn while have very low quality customer interactions. However, Freebirds was pretty great! The employee was very friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful, I was able to order a reasonably smaller burrito for a better price, the options felt much healthier, and their was more variety. (They also sell classic cheap beers instead of overcharging for low quality mexican drinks). To make matter better, they take extra steps with your burrito by kneading the ingredients together to give it a more consistent burrito. At Chipotle, you have to ask for this and get an sighing, eye rolling employee as a result. I did not get heartburn and did not feel overstuffed while having a very delicious burrito with free guacamole. So far my fast food burrito ratings go like this: 1. Freebirds, 2. Qdoba, 3. Chipotle

I don't understand why the other reviews are so bad. And please take note that this is my first review ever on Yelp. I went here yesterday with some family, and I will say the place seems understaffed, but still, all four of us got our food reasonably quick. The staff were very friendly, and very social toward the customers. The place was clean, and the two girls working the line seemed very knowledgeable. We went kind of late at night so it wasn't in particular too busy. Now; onto the food: The quality was absolutely AMAZING. Chipolte cannot even compare with the amount of ingredients you can choose, and get here at Freebirds World Burrito. I ordered their more well known burrito called a Super Monster. The girl that was helping me commented that I was a brave man for trying a super monster for my first visit, and she was right. My burrito was the size of a newborn baby. And just a side note, sour cream, avacado, queso fresco, and guacamole is free when you get a super monster. She then had me pick two tortillas, and yes, you really do need two tortilla for the super monster, which I picked Spinach, and Cayenne. The cayenne was my favorite, it had a nice spice to it. They also have Flour, and Wheat flavors. I then filled will my burrito with a huge portion of steak, which the steak was outstanding, and deliciously tender. I had her add cilantro lime rice, cilantro, Monterey cheese, pinto beans, lettuce, and tons of guacamole, she even let me pick how much I want, same with the sour cream. She even rolled the massiive burrito perfectly, not once did it unwrap. All the ingredients were fresh, and they had a lot more than what I picked, and the lettuce could of been better quality, but was still good. I will say the guacamole, and the cilantro lime rice could use more seasoning, like some salt, and a little pepper, but being someone who likes the natural taste of food, I didn't mind much. I ate most of my burrito, and was certainly fuller than I had ever been at Chipolte. Their queso fresco is literally the best queso I have ever eaten, and I regret not getting it on my burrito. Along with my meal, I also got a Pot Brownie, which the brownie was also delicous, it was moist, soft, and fresh, the flavor was outstanding, and the brownie itself is large, so it's definitely worth it. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and like I said, the staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and as quick as they could be, though a little understaffed. And one thing about the prices, they're pretty much the same as Chipolte, although the super monster is definitely the priciest food item, it was worth it, and the quality, and size of the meal was definitely a great value. I will most definitely be coming back, I might even abandon Chipotle completely. My ratings: Staff: 5/5. Decor: 4/5. Food Quality: 5/5. Food Taste: 5/5. Value: 5/5. Prices: 4/5. Portion Size: 5/5. Overall: 5/5.

The price is right! The food is lacking..seriously every time I've been here they've been out of important ingredients such as guacamole, cheese sauce, or certain sauces. One time we asked if they had more and the girl asked us if we wanted her to go in the back and get it for us...overall it's not good.

To start off I would like to say this place is terrible! I hate saying how bad a place is, but it's gotten to the point that I have no clue how they stay in business. I have tried it now three different time now. My Coworkers and I order to go because we all have set schedules that we have to return to work. Every time we select the option 12:45(I understand this is a busy time for most restaurants) but never is it ready on time, usually they don't even start making it tell we show up. This last time we even called at 12:35 to make sure it was ready by 12:45 and when my coworker went in they had half of it ready and we did not leave tell 12:50. We understand places can get busy, but when we all actually looked at our food.. Uh... They had written with sharpie across the aluminum foil and had pierced the foil which lead to sharpie being on the actual burrito. The quesadilla was not only cold but stuck entirely to the "pizza" like box it was put in. My coworker specifies every time no cilantro and for some odd reason they include it every time. The other two orders we had where wrong with no included sides that we were charged extra for.... I for one will not being coming back. I have given this place multiple time to fix their mistakes and it just seems to get worse.

I enjoy Chipotle, but I prefer Freebirds due to the extra choices of tortillas and toppings, the reasonable burrito prices with the "make it a meal" deal (drink with chips and your choice of guac, queso, or salsa), the friendly employees, and the retro-themed atmosphere. They also offer an e-club.

So my first visit had not gone so well, so I decided to give Freebirds another chance. The staff was very polite and the restraunt clean with unique wall art. In trying to pick a healthier option I went with the Light Chicken Bowl. It included spring mix, grilled chicken, black beans, guacamole and salsa. Overall very bland and soupy. My one small salad and drink $10.42, not worth the money! My high hopes... crushed!

Went here back in my college days still a great spot for a quick bite without the fast food feel. You get more bang for your buck and the food quality is great.

So here's the deal: I like great music, good service and awesome food. Freebirds on 119th offers just that! Chicken bowl with spicy chicken, cilantro rice, black beans and veggies topped with garlic jalapeño sauce is my personal favorite! Also can't go wrong with the freebird burrito with cayenne tortilla and steak! The service is awesome. A friendly staff Just the place I love being a regular at.

Probably one of my favorite burrito places around. They have quite a few more options than Chipotle, and you get much more food for your money. Every experience I've had with the staff has been pleasant, and they all seem knowledgable about their food.

So, technically this place doesn't open for a couple more days. However, I know a person who knows a person who knows a person who...well, actually, I know someone who works for a company next door and they were offering free food as a way to attract local lunch crowds and do a soft opening at the same time. Free food = good food. The place had a ton of staff, which I assume won't be the norm. However, because of that, it all moved really quick. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but has plenty of options. One knock is that they have a menu right at the beginning of the line, but you kind of have to remember what you want, which can be tricky with all of the options. Aside from that, it's a lot like Chipotle, but again, with more options. For example, they have 4-5 types of tortillas, from spinach to cayenne to flour. Also, four sizes of burritos, from small to massively ridiculous. I had a "regular sized" Freebird burrito, flour tortilla, steak. The steak didn't look very appetizing, but tasted fine (though not quite as good as Chipotle). I also got it with monterrey jack cheese, lettuce, black beans, pico de gallo, and one or two other fixin's. For sauce, I tried "death sauce", which didn't really kill me. In fact, it was quite boring and barely spicy. I should have gotten habanero, which I learned later was actually spicier. Shouldn't "death sauce" be your spiciest option? Or maybe I'm crazy. All in all, the burrito was good. I would return for sure, though I may not go out of my way considering I live right by a Chipotle. I didn't look at prices since it was free, but my fiance did and said they seemed a bit high to her. Service was incredibly friendly. The store was, of course, spotless since it wasn't "technically" open yet.

Keep in mind, I've only been to Freebirds once, but I'm feeling as though I will never be back. We got there about 2 hours before closing time on Saturday night, and we had to double-check the time on the door because more than half of the chairs were put up as if they were about to close for the night. We went to the food line to see what we wanted, and my fiancé noticed how old everything looked, so he chose wisely what he did and didn't want on his nachos. I went for a chicken quesadilla. There was no chicken left but they said 'Oh we've got some almost ready in the back.' Sweet. Fresh chicken for my dinner. After the wait, I thought I noticed a bad smell from my food but, being a first-timer I just thought 'oh it must be the seasonings they use here.' Fast forward to 24 hours later, having not been out of bed all day except to the bathroom to relieve my food poisoning symptoms. Like someone else wrote on here, I think the idea of this restaurant is a wonderful counter option to Chipotle, but the high schoolers need proper training about food safety.

I love Freebirds. It wins over chipotle every time. BUT this location is seriously understaffed at best, poorly trained at worst. 4 people ahead if me in line and it took 30 mins just to get to my turn. Three people walked by and said someone would be with me before someone finally did. Then, my burrito was cold. Even the chicken in it was only lukewarm. These people need to do a stint down in Austin to see how to get the job done.

Way better than Chipotle and with more selection. The staff is also great, or they were when I went. Shane in particular; a likable sort that positively could not have been more enthusiastic and helpful. Cheers for spanish rice, taco meat, draft bud light, spinach tortillas, tomato and onion separate from pico, and all the other things I've wished chipotle and other such places had.

Really? Fresh? You're kidding me!. I went there on Sunday around 4pm, not at all busy and got the burrito. The rice was soggy, meat were DRY, quesso was watery. There was dry cheese around the ladle. They look like left-overs from the day before. It was totally gross! I have strict thing about Not throwing away food, but I tossed the rest of my burrito half eaten. The only couple good things were the cayenne tortilla, and that the staff were very nice and friendly. I didnt have the heart to walk back out after seeing what's going in my burrito. Lessons learned.

So I've only been there once, and that will be my last. What is stopping me the RUDE TEENAGERS working there. No one knows any manners for paying customers? I'm not going to whine that my order had a small mistake, I'm pissed because of the treatment. Service: Had a chubby girl help my boyfriend and I, I was so excited because I heard the food was great. Going down the line we are asking for what we want on our burritos. We get down to the sections with corn, guac, bacon, etc. The stuff they charge you for. There was literrally half a scoop of bacon in there, the girl proceeds to sprinkle 5 little pieces on each and yells "more bacon!". Assuming she was getting more bacon for us, we waited for a sec and then she what else we wanted. Cool so I got charged for enough to feed a mouse. She was unfriendly and acted like it was a problem when I wanted to add something else. We then decided we wanted to make them meals. The girl at the register said they had ran out of chips, and the girl making our burrito's was like "sorry..uh i don't know what to do. want something else?" We told her we'd wait and she rolled her eyes! Sorry I don't mind waiting. So then the chubby girl brings us chips...we had 2 meals. That's 2 bags of chips. She gives us one full bag and another bag filled barely 1/4 full with nothing but crushed crumbs. Again, I pay extra and I get sh**. I asked her for more and again she procedeed to act as though it was an issue towards me. She barely filled the bag up. I didn't bother to ask for the appropriate amount a second time beacuse I was pissed I got ripped off. 2 meals, 2 burritos. Freaking 30 dollars to experience lazy snotty teens. Won't be coming back. I did like the food, but at least at chipotle they don't throw a fit.

This was the most tasteless Mexican food I have ever eaten. After eating Freebirds at USC, I was very excited to know that one came to Overland Park. I ordered a vegetarian burrito bowl. I received two minuscule dollops of guacamole, it was pretty sad, and it turned brown while I sat there moving the food around in the bowl. I ate about 10 bites and actually threw the entire thing away (something I never do). It was a huge waste of food and $6...I would choose chipotle veggie bowl over this one any day.

I didn't think it was possible but it's better than Chipotle! I love that you can add lime juice and cilantro those things alone make it worth it. I'm visiting from out of town I wish they had these back home!

I wasn't terribly impressed with this place. It was okay. Felt like it fed on the "hippy" vibe and the foil art was kind cool. We chose this place because it was a great option for a lower calorie meal - while trying to dine out. I obviously had a salad. It wasn't bad, it wasn't spectacular and given the opportunity, would visit again. I just wouldn't go out of my way to make a visit.

Interesting place. Harley motorcycle hanging from the ceiling with an army green plastic woman riding it through the wall. OK. Didn't expect that. Combination of heavy metal music with Hawaii-Five-O theme song a minute later. Again, you have my attention. Make my burrito any way I like it with a huge assortment of free toppings. Now you have my dollar. The meat was juicy and tasty. My husband's verdict is he prefers this place to pretty much any other burrito he's had since we left California. So why not five stars? In my opinion, at these prices things like sour cream should be included without additional up-charges. That irked me quite a bit. Sour cream is not a premium topping! The staff though helpful and friendly looked really disheveled. Like I-rolled-out-of-bed-and-put-on-this-beanie kind of disheveled. When you're in the food industry it's a good idea to look like cleanliness matters. That said, I still like the place. And I'd be happy to bring friends.

I think I will stick with Lynyrd Skynyrd and my Bic when I'm feeling a Freebird, and I will stick with Chipotle when I'm feeling a FAT BURRITO. I really enjoyed the place. I thought that it looked clean and tidy for a post lunch rush visit (about 1:30 on a Friday). There was Sports Center on the big screen, classic rock and/or roll on the over head speakers, and the decor was motorcycle tacky weirdness. Service has been summed up in other reviews as sub-par. I think that about covers it. I ordered a burrito Freebird size and a fountain drink for just under ten dollars. The barbacoa was nice, but the cilantro rice was not good. The hot sauce was ok and over all the burrito was above average for a chain store product. The real up shot for me was that I felt like they weren't trying to pigeonhole my order like they try to do at Chipotle. I felt encouraged to have my burrito with what ever ingredients they had to offer. I do recommend a visit to FWB. Maybe more your cup of tea than mine.

So I've tried Freebirds a few times now and it's just not as good as Chipotle. The food (rice, beans, veggies) tastes like it's been sitting around on a warmer for hours and the veggie and salsa toppings taste canned/not fresh. Everything's kind of flavorless and bland. Even worse, last time I ordered food ahead to pick up. After waiting in line (I was second and it took 8 minutes) the cashier (who tried to over-charge me) pulled my food out of a warmer. It tasted like it had been sitting around for a while and was mushy. Worst part? I'm allergic to gluten, which I specified, and ordered very specifically to get a gluten free bowl. An hour later I had my typical gluten symptoms. Definitely some cross contamination problems. I'm sticking to chipotle.

Last week I ate at chipotle 4 times in 6 days. However, I wanted to try something new this week for a quick lunch. I stopped here and was very surprised by the outstanding quality of service. The guy making the food knew the menu so well and gave great advice in what to order. I ended up ordering a quesadilla-turned burrito. He made a quesadilla and opened it up to fill it with burrito toppings and then rolled it up like a burrito. He was very patient as I carefully considered all of my options. He even threw in sour cream and queso for no charge! The restaurant was very clean and organized for being a prime lunch hour. I really liked the color of one of the female employee's hair, and I asked where she got it done. She spent at least 5 minutes talking with me about good local salons and the best place to go. All of the employees went out of their way to welcome me and make me feel at home at Freebirds. I will definitely be returning in the near future!

Food on the line looked old and withered. No chicken ready or on the way. Worst of all, no beer. Overall food was decent, but they didn't give me any reason to come back.

First let me be clear that I am reviewing THIS particular location. I am actually a Chipotle convert - I like Freebirds much better. But I started a new job and this is the closest location. What is going on at this shop?? If I had to guess, I would think there isn't a manager at all, and once hired, employees are simply turned loose on the kitchen and buffet line with no training and no idea whatsoever what they're doing (as I'm painfully picking my way through a cold burrito bowl in which some of the ingredients are PARTIALLY FROZEN). Where to start. 1. The cilantro rice is usually over- or under-cooked (crunchy is the word I'm looking for). 2. The bins of food are usually empty or look extremely un-fresh. 3. When I asked for the vegetables (which is always empty), the server looked at the empty tray and tried to scrape (nothing) out of it and told me it was "still good" - I said I'd wait for new vegetables, which threw them into a tail spin. Apparently refilling empty trays is unheard of. Waited five minutes for the vegetables, which, when they finally arrived, were freezing cold. 4. When I move down the line, I get the quantity of ingredients the server feels like giving me rather than what I request. "I'll have just a little bit of tha..." PLOP! "Um, ok, a pound of beans it is." I'm bummed this location is such a mess. The employees all have sweet, friendly dispositions, but they need to be trained! The ingredients need to be cooked properly and kept fresh. Also, and maybe I'm asking too much here...maybe have a manager on site??

I like Chipotle but, not matter the combination of toppings I feel like the burrito always tastes the same due to the cilantro lime rice. Freebirds can be a little pricier depending on what you get, but the selections are much better than what you'll find at any other burrito place. It's definitely faster than any Chipotle I've been to as well. The service is also much more likeable than the robots you'll encounter at Chipotle, My only quip is the lack of parking.

  • Sara D.

Freebirds is such an interesting place. I feel like Chipotle has the burrito thing down to a science and that no one else needs to mess with something so good. The service we received from the girl making our burrito was excellent. She was pleasant and happy to make our lunch. All the other employees though were a bit odd. I think they were all stoned and then on top of that they were trying to sell pot brownies. It was strange. The burrito was very filling; they offer you massive sizes of burritos that are sure to leave you stuffed. Afterwards, I felt pretty sick from my meal. Something in that burrito didnt agree with me. I suppose it's a fun place to try if you love cramming tons of ingredients into your burrito.

I like freebird. Just not a huge fan of this location. First lets start with parking. It's sort of a cluster. I have been to plenty of locations in a couple states. And they are all in strip mall type buildings. There is just something compact feeling about this one. Something else weird is that the building is below the level of the lot so you have to walk down to get in. It makes the place feel more cramped that it really is. Now the options and the food are awesome. Yes you pay extra for sour cream and guacamole but isn't a whole lot. $0.89 each. The Fanatic rewards card is great. You earn all sorts of free stuff really quick. I got dinner for 4 for $8 because of that card. And it has happened 3 times. Give them a chance but try one of the other locations instead.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
