A lot of fun all the chefs are energetic and fun to watch waitresss are all fast and helpful have not gotten any food there that I did not enjoy the Godzilla roll is amazing

We have always loved this restaurant. This time we went just the two of us and wanted alone time. So we sat in the other area, knowing we could order all the same things. We got sushi first, it was great! Then we ordered hibachi, it came out almost cold, less than 1/2 cup of veggies, fried rice didn't taste like it was cooked on grill, like in hibachi room, and steak had no flavor. I wish I said something, but we were really hungry and just covered our food in the sauce.

Bottom Line Up Front: Free Sake shots! Great price for the amount of food you get. No sodium overlood like other hibachi's. Had sushi here last month and decided to come back for the hibachi. This is the only restaurant in Manhattan, KS that does hibachi and they do it very well. It is the best hibachi I've had. Great experience overall, nothing I could complain about, other than the non-enthused patrons sitting across from us; it's a hibachi grill... the cook jokes around, have some laughs, enjoy the food, live alittle... come on, man! Anyways, I had the steak and shrimp while the Fiance ordered the chicken and shrimp. The chef did a few tricks I've never seen before and thought his performance was very entertaining and comical. He also handed out free hot sake shots to take with him throughout the cooking process. We got 3 free shots - awesome. After looking around at the other cooks, they all do it, too. As for the food, we received a hefty amount of fried rice which tasted great, not drenched in soy sauce. I had the steak medium rare and it was on point. The shrimp was great, both portions were more than I expected which was nice. The meal also came with cooked vegetables, soup, and salad. All in all, I highly recommend trying the hibachi here. We will definitely come back here again. You won't be disappointed, especially since there really isn't another one within an hour of here.

Stunned at the so-so reviews, I feel it my duty to support one of my favorite Manhattan, KS spots! Umi actually reminds me of some restaurants in the more urban areas of Japan. Of course the sake will never be the same due to America's laws! I love dining around the Hibachi grills for an entertaining meal. Of course, I do find most Kansas locals quite boring in an otherwise lively room! All the traditional tricks and some new ones are sure to please. Just remember, "You like to move it, move it!" The portions are enough for two people on both the hibachi side and on the more formal dining side. If you really want an adventure, there are traditional rooms with the low table and pillows. My knees and age make that experience to uncomfortable to bother with! The food is never too salty, too warm, too cold, or too fishy. It is always just wonderful and yummy! The chefs know what they are doing and even developed some "Wildcat" creations to support the K-State community. This is a rare treasure in a town of burger joints and fast food drive thru shops. Please support the more original restaurants in Manhattan. They are a true treasure!

I want to preface this review stating that I am not reviewing the hibachi side of the restaurant. My review is exclusively of the dine-in side, specifically the lunchtime sushi. My coworkers and I make a lunchtime run to Umi about once a month. They have fantastic lunch specials on sushi. You can get any two rolls plus a salad or miso soup for $8.95. The sushi is pretty darn good and their ginger dressing is equally appealing. The environment is also nice. I've never seen it overly busy and never waited on a table. The décor is relaxing, and it's always exceptionally clean. I'm about to dedicate an entire paragraph to the crab puffs. You must get the crab puffs. I cannot stand most crab rangoon, since they usually taste like your typical food court ball of cream cheese that's been overcooked in pastry. NOT these crab puffs. They're actually very flavorful. And the pastry is very light, so you can actually taste the filling and not just fried breading. We don't even share puffs when we go; we all order our very own. Even the health conscious, dieting members of our group will splurge on personal crab puffs. Plus, they serve the puffs in a dish shaped like a boat, which makes them more fun. The dipping sauce is also perfect - not that disgusting red bottled stuff everyone has become accustomed to at every cheap Asian-inspired restaurant. Also, it comes with an inexplicable red cherry as garnish. I don't eat it, but I love that it's on there. The only issue with Umi is the service. Don't get me wrong... the servers are always friendly, but I just cannot figure out how the entire process from ordering to table takes so long. If you come with someone new that "just needs another minute" to look over the menu, you'll be banging your head on the table to get your server back to take the order. It doesn't matter if every table is full or you're the only people in the place - It takes 45 minutes... always. It's an unsolved mystery of the universe. It's really very painfully slow if you're trying to get in and out over the lunch hour. Overall, Umi is a great place to grab some lunch. Delicious, fresh and economic.

Some of the chefs are not good. Rice should be cooked better. Way overpriced for the taste of the food. Kobe's in Kansas City is Wayyy better for about the same price range.

First time here! Amazing nothing beats back at home but this place def comes super close. They were so nice. The guy cooking kept us involved. I was really impressed there sushi was amazing I loved everything about this place! Loved it loved it loved it!
(4)Lesia M.
UMI has the best sushi for miles ! The staff is friendly and helpful. It is a very relaxing environment, the hibatchi is delish! Been here many times and the flavor combinations are always spot on!

Good food, always fun to watch them prepare it in front of you. It has cool Japanese-modern style decorations, and serves Sapporo beer imported from Japan. However, the cooks on the habachi side play a game where they throw food and you try to catch it in your mouth, and I've had the unfortunate circumstance of having the food land right down my shirt in front of dates, friends, and most embarrasingly, family. The price is much to hefty for my budget, and honestly isn't anything extremely special. Also, the owners are Chinese, which always strikes me as odd. The servera have never been to friendly either. A good resteraunt if you're out to drink with friends, but not ideal for a family affair.
(3)Ynah R.
i was soo excited to have a sushi restaurant close by. we live in junction city and our family is a big sushi fan. i gave two stars just cuz the place looks really nice. however the food is too pricey for its quality. not impressed with the sushi . miso soup and the ginger salad dressing tasted watered down. i had not yet tried the hibachi yet but i had heard it wasnt that great either. ..
(2)Allaina S.
I used to only be able to have hibachi if I went to Kansas City, and I had only dined at Stix at Legends, which I found absolutely mediocre. Umi is MUCH better than Stix. The chefs were friendly and our server was as fabulous as a hibachi server could be. The location is absolutely terrible and so easy to forget about. Umi isn't the hibachi that I miss from my hometown, but nothing is. Great little restaurant hidden in the corner of Manhattan.
(4)Jacqueline W.
My husband and I ate here last week. The tableside chef was great! The food was fabulous! The ambiance is pleasant! I so would recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family. Wishing UMI the best of luck and much success!

My wife has wanted to try Umi's for awhile now, so we finally did Friday night. Some of the other reviews I read prior to going we a little goofy. For instance, that they have a TV in the restaurant area. Not true it's behind the bar. All nice and even 4 or 5 star restaurants have that. With all that said here's my experience. Food was good. My wife says Beni Hana 's is better though. The waitress is what ruined for us! She was snotty, rude, and seemed not to give a crap about service. Her name was Kelly and had blonde hair; stay away from her service! She gave attitude for no reason, didn't offer us refills on our wine, odder desert, and waited until the whole table was about done to ask about how the food was. I finally got a refill of water, wooohoooo! We wanted more wine and desert, but didn't want to have to beg for it. I found out from waitress at bar that the chefs only get 5% of total bill. So I left a little more of a tip then I wanted. We always tip at least 20% and even more if their great. We rarely tip less than 15%, I did this time because she was that bad. I wouldn't go back unless my wife wanted too. I'm big on customer service.

Let me preface this by saying I don't go to Japanese restaurants for the sushi or the habachi. I go there for Japanese food - the stuff that you would find at the dinner table of somebody's house. I should also say I ordered to-go. This place did not offer what I was hoping for. I first had to ask if they could make me a pork sukiyaki as it was not on the menu. The hostess was very polite in explaining to me that the restaurant doesn't have pork. Disappointed, I asked for the "katsu chicken" (which I have a problem with since katsu is from the word tonkatsu which means pork) when I finally arrived back home to examine my meal, I was sorely disappointed that the dish was nothing more than a fried chicken breast on a bed of shredded lettuce and what smelt like essentially Worcestershire sauce. The dish literally smelled like the chicken you could get at your local Burger King. I will not be going back.
(2)Rain C.
This is a really good sushi place but a little pricy... they have mango rolls that are really good! I came to Manhattan to visit a friend of mine and we went to this place for lunch, I ordered mango roll and kansas roll! they are yummy!
(5)Dan P.
Sushi is pretty good for Kansas. Umi certainly the best in Manhattan. The special rolls are moderately creative, but all seem to contain fried shrimp. Their fish doesn't taste as fresh as coastal seafood, but how could it. Overall, not bad.
(3)Sylvia L.
Way overrated. The actual owners are very nice gentlemen that try very hard to please customers, but the last time I went with a group of 5, we had crappy service and were all automatically charged an automatic 20% gratuity. I'm sorry we asked for another glass when this one had a crack down half of it and chips around the rim. Why did one dinner come out 30 minutes before the others to get cold while the rest of us patiently waited? We had to ask multiple time for a refill on our beers. This review makes me sound like an entitled b, but I am polite and pleasant when it comes to servers. I was so irritated with the service that the mandatory gratuity was the deal breaker for me. I will never go back. The food's not worth it.

The restaurant finally opened after having delayed its opening for a while. When I did go to Umi, I understood why it had taken them so long to open the restaurant. The interior made me think of a hotel restaurant in Osaka! The place was spacious. There were different seating areas. Customers could sit at the regular tables, at the sushi bar, and I was told that there was even a special room with tatami mats. I didn't get to check it out, though. Then there is the teppanyaki area. That one section made the whole restaurant very noisy. That's where my friends and I went. We had enough people to sit around the grill. I don't know what happens for small groups, though, i.e. if they have to wait for all the seats to fill up, or they would just get that area all to themselves. Of course I ordered the 'hibachi' set (I don't know why it's referred to as hibachi and not teppanyaki, though). It took a while before the chef came, so in the mean time, we were served a small plate of salad and miso soup. It was a very small portion. I wasn't too happy with the miso soup, and I wonder if they used the paste or the powder. There were also so very few tofu and almost no wakame in my soup. When the chef finally came, we still had to wait for the food to be cooked. The teppanyaki/ hibachi style is where the chef would do some 'cooking tricks' as he cooks the food on the flat iron grill. Our chef was very friendly and quite skillful, except that when he did the eggs, I noticed that when he cracked the eggs, some small bits of the eggshell fell onto the egg he was cooking. The food was okay. The rice (ALWAYS the rice) was a bit dry. It's hard to cook rice of that portion and try to keep it moist. All the more reason why I think that maybe they need to figure that out. (I had a lot of leftovers and I must say that the food did indeed microwave very well!) All in all, I did enjoy dining at Umi. I may go back, and give their sushi menu a try. I just hope that i won't be disappointed with their rice.

Absolute WORST sushi I have had in a long time. If not for the great lunch company I had this day might have been a total bust. I ordered the spicy salmon and the spicy yellow tail. The sushi was extremely bland, not the least bit spicy and had this gross crunchy filler that I can I ly describe as sawdust. The fish was all mashed up and fluffed up to look like more than it was. And the worst part is it was warm and had a fishy smell to it, I am thoroughly disappointed. I have had far better sushi from the supermarket. Also note, the miso soup was bland and extremely watered down and the wasabi tasted like the equivalent of Taco Bell salsa to a Mexican. The only thing that was not horrible was the edamame, good but not worth the trip. This was my second trip here and will be my last. Sucky sushi butthead restaurant!
(1)Courtney K.
So yummy! Pretty good sushi but the reason to go is the hibachi grill. They put on a good show but I sometimes wish it was longer.
(5)Komposure B.
Outstanding food and the prices are reasonable. Service was fast and our waitress was great. The kids enjoyed the show and our chef put a good show for the kids.
(5)Hannah G.
We've come here a few times now. The sushi has always been pretty bad, but the hibachi (table-side, not teppanyaki) was okay so we'd come back and stick with that. Tonight will be our last visit though. Our server was friendly but non-existent. Everyone starts wrapping things up an hour before they close, we're trying to eat and servers are taking condiments off of our table, bus/trash cart is rolling by. Water was empty about 75% of the meal. We actually had to get up from the table to get our server a couple of times. We both ordered filet. One of us got filet but the other got regular steak. We sent it back, and they confirmed it was regular steak. 10 minutes later they bring out the old plate, with the now cold rice and veggies, with the steak replaced. No one here really seems to care about what they do. So, we don't care to come back.

A fun place for date night! Eric R. and I came here last night for date night as newbies. The restaurant is so spacious! There is a side with tables, a sushi bar, and a few hibachi rooms (which is really more like teppanyaki). We decided to sit on the hibachi side for the show. We decided to order a bento that highlighted sashimi and also a hibachi dinner. I had hot green tea and Eric R. had a sapporo for $3.25! I ordered the edomae bento, which came with a choice or miso or mushroom soup, salad, and was served as sushi rice topped with tuna, salmon, red snapper, tamago, kani, and seaweed salad accompanied with ginger and wasabi. The fish was surprisingly fresh compared to what I tried at Green Tea Sushi a few weeks ago. It was fresh and delicious enough to warrant a return trip to the sushi bar in the future. Eric R. ordered hibachi combo calamari and filet mignon. That came with mushroom soup, salad, fried rice, sauteed vegetables, and apparently, hot sake shots! The chef was wild and kept ordering hot sake for the table but only gave it to 4 of the 5 people who ordered hibachi. The chef tossed food in all of our mouths which I was a bit afraid of but caught some scrambled egg on my first open-mouthed try! The calamari was tasty and the beef cooked to our liking. The fried rice was really good. We had a nice time but the hibachi room is so loud, with lot of chefs smacking the vent with metal utensils and yelling, and gongs clashing for birthday singing. The hosts told us hibachi can be ordered in the dining room, so there is a quiet side to the place. I am glad we tried it as we left satisfied with our shared meals. I look forward to trying more sushi at the sushi bar next time.

As good as it gets. We attended a wedding in Manhattan and, as I always do, I searched for sushi restaurants. My husband and I love sushi and sashimi and miss it terribly since we moved to Northwest Kansas, so any time we're headed to a large city, we check for Japanese restaurants. This was a fabulous pick. Everyone was so nice and pleasant. The miso was delicious and we just about inhaled all the lovely morsels of nigiri, tempura and tea. Should be ever find ourselves in Manhattan in the future, we will definitely be back.
(5)Brizio D.
Food was fine, we tried the Mama Japanese tofu hot pot and some sushi. The service was pretty bad though. Maybe we just picked the wrong waiter.
(2)Charlotte C.
We went in this past Saturday for lunch to celebrate my granddaughters bday and the service was horrible. We sat there for over an hour waiting on food, while other people came in ate and left. I have been there several times this was the worst we had to ask for refills on water and drinks we spent well over 100.00 and after my husband complained we got a 15.00 gift card
(1)Drew P.
A good hibachi place. The chef was lively and entertaining. The food was good but not great. Some rice was over done while some was perfect. All the steak and seafood our party ate was good but the chicken was just alright. All in all a good meal.
(4)Dano R.
Sushi is good. Appetizers are really good. We also had an Asian dish and a hibachi order. We could tell both the Asian dish and the hibachi must have setting awhile they were not hot but room temp.

So I decided to give Kansas sushi another try... *sigh* dear Jesus... Please don't let me get good poisoning in the process... I walk in this place and realize its pretty fancy to be in such a dump like Manhattan Kansas... I wasn't greeted by anyone... So I just made my way to the sushi bar... A waitress came over to me after a few minutes and took my drink order... as well as told me about the specials... While I looked over the menu the chef gave me an original creation of his... which was delicious! I ordered two rolls... (cant recall the name... sorry) and they were so tasty! Very well put together and very appealing to the eye! Needless to say.. while I hate Manhattan, KS... If I got stuck out here again... I would definitely go back here for a meal...
(4)Sean M.
Good sushi at a great price in Manhattan, KS. My wife and I had a few rolls, salad and soup. The avocado salad was really good! My miso soup was as good as hoped for and the sushi rolls were creative and tasty. The best part is the price. While expensive for Manhattan, the quality was easily worth the price. We had some problems with my wife's drink, but you can easily guess why they fill a martini full of simple syrup in a college town. The only real complaint was the sign on the door that said "Fatty tuna available." The tuna we ordered, "fatty tuna" was very obviously frozen and was flavorless. That might work in KS, but it doesn't work with anyone who has tasted it before. However, and a big however, it was $3.50 a piece! No harm, no foul. Good meal, and we will be back. Edit: sushi side only. We are looking forward to trying the Hibachi next.
(3)Sean H.
Disclaimer: not a hibachi review* Tucked away in a corner of a strip mall, this place is solid Hibachi and Sushi joint for Manhattan. They have a hibachi area with several grills/tables (about 8) and then a casual dining room area if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere to enjoy your food and company. We sat in the causal dining area because we were strapped for time and the hibachi area was pretty crowded, which is to be expected on a Friday night. I had green tea (no coffee), hot and sour soup, and I split a Wildcat, Rainbow, Godzilla roll with my date (no hibachi). Disappointingly, the hot and sour soup wasn't that great. Normally my favorite thing to order, but this time I was disappointed in the lack of flavor . However, the sushi rolls made up for the soup. I was pleasantly surprised by the sushi rolls. They were very good from the sushi "away from the coast" standpoint. Overall this restaurant isn't anything to write home about, but from a small town perspective without many options or big money owners it is a nice establishment. I would recommend this place to the fellow people of Manhattan.
(4)Matt L.
The best sush in town! You will find better in KC or the coats but for a smaller city in the Midwest, this place is good. Try their baked rolls, creative with flavor. The service is usually pretty good, when they're really busy it can be a wait. So grab a drink at the bar while you wait!
(4)Melissa W.
I went to UMI tonight. I know there were a lot of people there, but the service was kind of slow. We sat at the Hibachi area, and ordered two rolls, some sashimi, and the hibachi combo with steak and shrimp. My friend and I liked the rolls, which came to the table fast. However, our hibachi was horrible. The chief put MUCH soy source on our dishes, which made my dish too salty. :(
(2)Monique W.
I really wanted to like this place because we are a military family and love to find the hibachi grills wherever we're stationed, but compared to the other hibachi styled restaurants we've been to, this was the worst. The rice is usually my favorite part of the meal, but this rice did not have much flavor and it was dry. None of the food had very much flavor and the sauce they gave us to dip our meat and veggies in, was too watery. The cook and waitress were pleasant, but the food could have been better. I don't mind paying the money for good food, but this food was not worth the price. We've tried it twice and I don't foresee us trying it again.
(2)Derek D.
Absolutely horrible customer service. I called 3 hours ahead of my expected arrival to place a reservation for a table, I was told they were not taking reservations, but that it was a 5-10 minute wait, and that they expected it to stay that way for the rest of the evening. When I showed up, the place was filled with hundreds of people, there was some kind of raffle going on, and the wait was well over an hour for a table. I went somewhere else. Incompetent staff who answered the phone and did not even realize the restaurant was doing a promotion night. I will never eat here again.
(1)Kristen L.
THIS PLACE! :) My husband and I came in here for sushi - we did not go on the hibachi side (looked like a good time in there though!). At first, I was worried about this place because when we walked in it smelled really fishy. Stinky fishy. Edamame is edamame, but it was very delicious here nevertheless. I cannot remember the names of the rolls that we got - but they were delicious. We even got the one with banana on it, just to try it, and we were so pleasantly surprised at how amazing it was! We saved room for mochi, and even though it was presented really well, it was flavorless. The food came fast and was delicious. The service was friendly. The restaurant was clean (minus the smell) and pretty good ambiance. I do have one gripe! I think the owners want this place to look classy and a place you can dress up to go to, just by looking around the place. HOWEVER, there's a huge TV on the wall. I think it's distracting and takes away from the ambiance.
(4)Marie C.
pretty good sushi although it is kind of pricey it is the best you will get around here.
(4)Melissa C.
I haven't been to a Hibachi grill in a few years and have been wanting to check this place out since we got here. I can't vouch for the Sushi...we didn't come for it nor did we try it. We sat on the Hibachi side; I had chicken & my husband had steak/chicken. Our cook was very entertaining and one of the best I have seen in a while; thus making the evening eventful. Everyone is complaining about the price, however, I feel the price is right when I compare it to Hibachi restaurants that I have been too in the past. To me, its normal for it to be $15-20 for a meal. However, you get a lot of food (fried rice, veggies, meat & some entertainment).
(4)Alicia M.
Umis is the only decent sushi place to eat at in Manhattan, Kansas. Its upscale design inside, contemporary, sleek, pretty out of place for this area. Was told they fly in their seafood daily. This is important in a land locked state. Bit pricey but had become a very worthy semi regular splurges for my friends and me. And the hibachi grill is a great show, the chefs are very friendly, funny, interactive, and personable, they make it dinner and a show.
(4)Kelli S.
Beautiful new restaurant. Lots of different places to sit. There is the hibachi room, bar, dining area and the sushi bar. Wonderful selection of sushi. Had the hibachi chicken and it was great. The vegetables were grilled perfectly and the sauce was really good. I tried their Strawberry & Kiwi fruit drink, kind of like a margarita, with grey goose vodka. YUM! Definitely will be going back.
(4)Dave S.
Hibachi fried rice was ok, but not better than any other place. Costs two or three times the price of what you find at another place. You are essentially paying for the performances by the chef. Sushi is not good at all. Green Tea in aggieville has much better sushi.
(2)will f.
Prices: overpriced, even for sushi Hibachi (sp): we saw others with chefs who were putting on a good show, at least feigning interest in their job. not our guy as he clearly gave 2 shitzu's. sushi menu/quality: quality is better than you'd expect for a crap town like manhattan. we spend a good bit of money whenever there at the sushi bar and the guys always hook us up with a few free dishes of off the menu items. last i was there though they still aren't doing sticky sushi rice, which will get you shot depending on where you are. it's pretty inexcusable for any sushi place that has clearly put this much money into the motif to have bad sushi rice. back to basics guys.
(3)Sal U.
Over priced rolls that are just as good the ones served at Dillons... Tempura where the batter is still powdery in the middle, and don't forget about the flies!! This place is horrible, but I guess if you've never experienced anything better, then this place would be above par Never again will I give them my money

This place is hidden behind the Manhattan Wal-Mart, and was a great find! Unfortunately we decided to eat here on a Friday night, which was a usual crowded atmosphere of lines and waiting. Since it was our first time, we decided to eat at in the Hibachi room where there is an entertaining cook making the food in front of you. The wait was more than the suggested time of an hour, which we weren't too fond of especially since they allowed guests who called in seated ahead of us. I suppose the wait was worth it. We ordered Miso soup (which was about average and nothing special), the Red Dragon sushi (HIGHLY recommended!), and the chicken dinner that comes with fried rice, soup, and salad. It all tasted like being at home in Japan again when tasting the fried rice. Although, we ordered the calamari dinner and not shared it (if shared it's an extra $5 or so) although the size is shareable, the cook still gave me fried rice. The calamari was alright, with very light flavor unless you dip it in their sauces provided. Overall, for the price we payed, this is definitely a place for special occasions or once in a while dining in the hibachi area. If you're in for just sushi or sit n go type meals, then just make sure it's not a Friday night.

This restaurant was recommended to me by locals, who claim it has great sushi. I ate at the sushi bar in January 2012 and found it acceptable, but not great. The atmosphere is pleasant; a wall-sized waterfall greets at the entrance, and colored lights illuminate the semi dark sushi bar portion of the restaurant. Waitstaff seemed pleasant enough. I was impressed with the sushi chefs, one of whom made me an appetizer before I even ordered - and it was both attractive and tasty. The quality of the fish used in the sushi was pretty good, given this is Kansas, however I found the rice used to be somewhat dry. Over all, I give Umi 3/5 stars. The sushi was decent, but far from exceptional.

Awesome! Staff and service is wonderfully attentive. It is fun and loud. They have a back room that we used for a party of 40! Food was great, chefs were personable and entertaining!!
