I love this one. It looks like a panda express-style fast food restaurant, but the food is comparable to any sit-down Chinese place. And it keeps the fast-food speed! Anytime I go I get the daily special, which always seems to be pineapple chicken. It's a ton of awesome food for $5.99. Can't beat that.

Our favorite Chinese restaurant! I love the sesame chicken. I have yet to try anything on the secret menu, but I am looking forward to it!

Only thing good about this place is the discount to students. Even with that, you are basically paying for rice

So, i gave this place another shot. I really wanted to enjoy it but i didn't. Ordered some General Tso Chicken and some sweet and sour. We didn't even finish our meals. Barely ate it. Once again, the rice was horrible. I swear it seems like old rice mixed with new rice. The chicken was so fried that it was basically beef jerky. The sauce....oh the sauce. It was like eating food with Jello. Everyone keeps hollering about a "secret menu". Why would I want to order from this "secret menu" when they can't even get the basics down? Guess i'll just cook now..... Sorry guys. You didn't cut it.

Imperial Garden was a truly mixed experience. On one hand they offered quick service Chinese, I mean come on they have a drive thru. On the other hand, I burnt my tongue biting into their sesame chicken. Granted, the dish was very tasty. Then there's the rice....tasted awful. Almost two days old. So they were on par for 4-5 stars based on location and lack of competition, but lost out on some minor flaws. I'd like to give them a second chance.

Truly extraordinary. Don't be fooled by the drive through, by the "Express" in the title, or the "official" menu, Check out the Chef's Menu for authentic and delicious Chinese food. I haven't tried the soups (yet), but the twice-cooked pork (made with real pork belly!) is fantastic. I also really like to spicy dry tofu with pork, and I'm not generally a fan of tofu. --- Update: Tried the soups. Szechuan noodle is very tasty and extremely satisfying. This is the first place I've tried pork intestine. Yummy with preserved vegetables, but it's an acquired taste. Try it!

This is one of the things I miss most about Manhattan. I've noticed most of the bad reviews are from people who eat the Americanized version of Chinese food, like General Tso's. Dude, don't eat that shit. If you're gonna go to a Chinese restaurant that offers authentic Chinese food, then that's what you should be eating. The secret menu, or chef's special menu, is where it's at! Much more authentic than your typical Americanized Chinese food: small slivers of meat with lots of veggies. The only thing I ever ordered from the regular menu was the bacon fried rice, and it was good, but I absolutely love the secret menu. If you love spicy food, you're in luck. Most of the items are spicy. I love the pork with mustard greens or with chives if they're out of mustard greens, which seemed to happen a lot. The Princess Chicken was also divine. I tried to eat something different every time I went here, but I kept coming back to those three things because they were sooo good. If you're not a fan of spicy, I recommend the tomato egg noodle. It was very flavorful and hearty, and they are very generous with portion sizes. The restaurant is small, so I usually got my food to go. They also have a drive thru. Service is fast and friendly. Unfortunately, they do not deliver.

I'm very disappointed!! Everyone I work with talks highly of this place. The place and food are disgusting! I would never eat there and will refer no one to this place. I desperately wanted to call a health inspector! Being just moved to Kansas I have yet to find anything good or close to where I'm from. I'm sorry people in Kansas you have no idea what real food taste like and this place isn't it. So disgusting. The funny thing is they always seem busy and I'm not sure why with serving food that's not even good. Plus don't get me on the disgusting crawling things behind the counter.

As a Chinese, I think this is the best Chinese restaurant in town compared to other Chinese restaurant by the following reasons: 1. Price: the price is the lowest compared to others. 2. Flavor of real Chinese dishes: pretty good, it's traditional Chinese food for me if I don't order foods like broccoli beef and something like what Panda Express offers. 3. They offer drive-thru, but this is only for regular entrees but not for traditional Chinese food. I have to say that the amount of their dishes is not that much compared to others, but one dish is pretty enough for one person. In a word, I think this is the best Chinese restaurant in town with general reasons I mentioned. Anyway, highly recommend this restaurant.

Truly terrible Chinese food... I compare this to sub par mall food court Chinese. I'm mind boggled where these stellar reviews are coming from, my guess the employees. I ordered beef & broccoli and fried rice. You know, something fairly common in Chinese cuisine. The rice wasn't fried, nor even cooked. Might as well be eating it right out of a bag. The broccoli had the consistency of complete mush from sitting already cooked in a pre made container too long. Bottom line, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The reviews already here convinced me to try Imperial Garden, and I am so glad I did. This is by far the best Chinese food in Manhattan. The regular menu with the typical Americanized Asian food, like the kung pao, is good. Most of the negative reviews here are from people who think beef and broccoli is "basic Chinese cuisine" and I'm sorry folks, but it isn't. It's Americanized fast food versions of Chinese food. Imperial at least tries to make these Americanized versions more like real food, but at some point, if you're ordering deep-fat fried chunks of stuff swimming in a sticky sauce that's a color of red you can't find in nature, that's on you. The real attraction is the "secret menu," which is in notebooks near the cash register. Grab one and take it to your table to browse through. It's real Chinese food. The soups are terrific! There are about five clear broth soups, some not available every day, so you'll have to ask. We're partial to the tofu and clam, and the pork and daikon soup. Of the entrees, I love the jampong, a spicy noodle soup with tons of meats and vegetables, which is easily enough for 3 meals, especially if you get an appetizer. The salt and pepper shrimp is great, the first Asian shrimp meal I've had in town where the shrimp were prepared properly so I can eat the shells if I want. The red braised chicken is great and really popular (last time we got carryout, three people ahead of us also got it!) and the red braised beef is also amazing, like a spicy Asian version of beef stew. There are lots of peppers and spices. Don't assume the green you see in your food is a mild green pepper or green onion! It's probably jalapeno, and it will be hot. Plan on eating a lot of steamed rice and having sugary soda to cut the spice. Also, this is home cooking, so when you get the red braised chicken there will be pieces of bone, the pork in the soup is on bone as well, the clams in the soup are in the shell and bits of shell can be found at the bottom of the bowl, etc. Others have complained about the rice, but I found it to be okay. The steamed rice is the best with the secret menu items in my opinion, and it's better rice than the fried, but the one time I had fried with kung pao chicken it tasted pretty good. I personally don't understand giving the place 1 star just because it's not like Asian food in bigger cities, because MHK is not a big city, no matter what some of the locals say. (And no offense to the other reviewer but I have to laugh when someone from freakin' Indiana complains that Kansas doesn't have great Asian food... like Indiana does. Because when we think great Asian food, we think Indiana, I guess?) If you like Chinese food, try this place at least once. The staff is friendly, it's clean, there are always plenty of utensils and napkins, the food comes out fast and fresh.

Fast Food style restaurant. Good atmosphere and clean tables. Staff are very welcoming. Must try their authentic Chinese menu on the counter, instead of regular American tuned Chinese dishes on the regular menu. Spicy tomato beef noodle comes highly recommended. Taste like supreme red meat sauce pasta, but better. It is a dish of when-east-meets-west. Spicy Noodle Soup and JamPong Noodle soup are good choices too if you like noodle soup style. Will have more reviews on their dishes when I get to them.

This place is fantastic! If is above and beyond the other quick Chinese places in Manhattan, KS and even includes a drive thru! The service is great and you get your food out, hot; and fast. Even with all that in mind, the price and taste are of much better value and quality compared to similar places here. Definitely recommend if you are in the mood for Chinese food.

Imperial Garden Express is the best Chinese food you can find in Manhattan, KS. If this restaurant were in CA or any major city, it wouldn't be a 5 star-er, but the fact that it's in Manhattan bumps up my rating of the place. The service is fast, accommodating and friendly. They remembered that my friend was vegetarian (their family tofu dish contains chicken that you have to request to hold). Their secret menu has been translated and everything that I have ordered has been awesome. All they're missing from their menu are black bean noodles! If anyone knows where I can find some jia jiang myun in town, please message me! They also have a super convenient drive through window. Every time I've called in my order, it's been ready within the 5 minutes it takes me to drive there. Update: Stay away from the fried rice. Bacon fried rice was way salty. Shrimp fried rice was inedible. I'll still leave them w/ 5 stars because their secret menu beats everything else Manhattan has to offer for Chinese food Update #2: I guess the owners saw my review of their bacon fried rice and graciously offered me a free order of bacon fried rice. Depending on what brand of bacon they're using they need to adjust their fried rice recipe. My second go around with their bacon fried rice was awesome. Bacon made it better not saltier this time around. When I come off of my jalapeno beef and pork/corn soup kick, I'll definitely order the bacon fried rice again. Bonus points for the restaurant owners for their care and concern over customer satisfaction.

Great Chinese place! I will add another thumbs up for the "secret" menu. I will go back many more times.

Ordered the sweet and sour chicken. More batter than chicken and bottom half was padded with fried rice. Shrimp fried rice was very good.

This is a split review: The official menu: Meh. Average, Chinese-chef/mall food court Chinese food. Friendly service, and the food is hot, but bland. Secret menu: Awesome! The owners have a "secret" handwritten menu (in Chinese) catering to the international students in town, and the food is great! Ask for the "spicy beef noodle soup" or bring a friend who can read Chinese. They intend to translate it sometime, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

This is a great thing for Manhattan! The food is stellar for any authentic sit-down Chinese place, let alone what I'd expect from a drive-thru. They have some of the most fabulous egg rolls I've ever had and the price point is very good for the amount of food you get. The fifth star was nailed in the coffin by having people very fluent in English as their window workers. Awesome!

I'm from San Francisco and I'm used to better "ethnic" foods. I've been to three places in manhattan and they were pretty bad. This place is pretty good compared to the other places. I loved the bacon fried rice and the jalapeño beef! The sweet and sour pork wasn't that good. It's like they had bites of pork and they just threw on the sauce. Besides that I'm pleasant pleased. Also, The service was good and fast.

I LOVE this restaurant. It's definitely the best Chinese restaurant in town thus far. Their American Chinese food is pretty comparable to other Chinese restaurants in town but what really stands out is their more authentic menu that they keep on the counter by the register. The minced pork and green beans is one of my absolute favorites! Their Jampong (aka "Gumbo"), is a spicy soup base that has noodles, shrimp, chicken, and veggies in it - it is AMAZING. The soup is very unique in flavor - salty, meaty and spicy! Mind you, if you order it as is, it's pretty dang spicy, so if you can't handle the heat, you can ask them to make it mild for you. You know the food is good if the majority of their returning customers are Asian! And yeah, I'm allowed to say that since I'm Asian. ;)

Yelp led me to this quality Chinese Restaurant. And luck led me to their drive thru. What a nice surprise. Hands down the best Chinese food in Manhattan. I have gone through this drive thru 3 or 4 times now and EVERY time I've had a pleasant experience. The menu is easy to read and it's easy to order. The customer service is always great. The portions are large and should last you through two meals. The food is always steaming hot and tastes fresh. The egg rolls and crab ragoons are where it's at. If this place starts delivering they will have the Chinese food market completely cornered in Manhattan and Yelp will have to add a "6" star rating. Keep up the good work!

These 5 stars are for Imperial and Yelp! Without Yelp I would have never discovered the "secret" menu - now with subtitles - that turned this 3 star Chinese American joint into a full-blown 5 star awesome fest. Pros: more authentic selection of foods on the "secret" Chinese menu and an abundance of mid-American Chinese food on the other menu; plenty of employees and quick service, a drive-thru Cons: no delivery yet, no take home copy of the "secret" menu, crappy hot tea We tried V3 and V4 (the Greens with Pork & Jalapeno and the Eggplant with Brown Bean Sauce). If you're not used to authentic Asian cuisine you should take note that meat is more of a condiment and flavor-adder. Both these dishes were great, the Greens very flavorful and fairly healthy while the eggplant was supper yum it was very heavy handed with the brown bean oil sauce. Definitely will go back to try the rest of the large "secret" menu.

Just not like Hawaii Asian food, they set their standards so high that I doubt any Asian place here in KS will ever come close :(

One of my favorite options in Manhattan. A big step over the many local Chinese buffet places. Everything is made fresh when you order. My favorite dish is the mustard greens with pork and jalapeño. It's on the "secret" Chinese menu sitting on the counter. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions. The staff is great.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
