Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Overall, this is as good as Mexican gets in Manhattan. No, that's not saying much, but El Tapatio is strong where it matters -- service, price and food quality. First, our waiter was polite, attentive and quick. Not much more you can ask. As for the prices, you can't beat them for Mexican in Manhattan. Drinks are especially cheap, but maybe a little weak. I had a margarita and my wife a piña colada. They were tasty, but not very strong. The food isn't very authentic, but come on, this is Manhattan, Kansas. My wife enjoyed her chimichanga and I a Burrito Tapatio, which had French fries in it (a fun addition). The flavors don't necessarily leap off the plates, but that's not really what I expect from places like this. I also may need to be more adventurous in my selection. I'll be back.

El Tapatio has the best and quickest service on the Westside. I feel that the food has improved greatly since it first opened. The portions are very generous. The staff is very friendly and remembers its customers. They are quick to greet you at the door and seat you promptly. It may not be the fanciest and the cleanest, but this is a great neighborhood spot!

I was pretty excited to see another authentic Mexican restaurant open up here in manhattan (the only other one worth going to is la fiesta). I've been here twice and I am definitely a fan. The first time I came I got the beef chimichanga. I was a little disappointed by the size of it but it was still pretty good. The second time I got the beef fajitas. This is definitely my favorite dish. I came pretty hungry and could only finish half of it. It came with 3 tortillas and a big plate of pico de gallo, guacamole, rice and beans. It was about 11 dollars and it's worth it since you get two meals out of it. Also thursday nights are dollar margaritas. I will definitely be back.

We have tried El Tapatio several times. The food is mediocre, but the margaritas are fantastic! We also like the chips and salsa. The restaurant is bright and clean, and the service is quick and friendly. However, because we have not enjoyed the food, we have not returned.

Had the best Chile Verde from there last night. It had great heat and fantastic flavor.

So for a while I liked this place a lot. But, two times ago when I came I found ground beef and chicken in my VEGETARIAN fajitas. Today it happened again. I'm a strict vegan so this is a problem, and the dish was listed as vegetarian. To me, this shows that they don't clean their cooking surfaces between meals and cross contaminate. Gross. I complained about my fajitas and they took 3 dollars off of my 10 dollar meal. Not good enough. Never again.

Best Mexican restaurant in town. My buddy and I sat at the bar and got great service. They have $1 margaritas on Thursdays and it was not at all watered down. Complimentary chips and salsa. The queso was really good. They have an interesting selection of Mexican beers you can't necessarily find anywhere else in town. I had been looking for Negra Modelo on draft here in Manhattan for quite a while. I had the chile verde. It had a kick to it, but sooo much flavor. Portions were huge and totally worth the reasonable price. I was told to try the chile colorado as well, but I don't know if I'll be able to resist the chile verde next time I'm there. It is that good.

El Tapatio is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, while I won't claim to be a Mexican restaurant aficionado, it still stands as one of the best that I've been to. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, seating is always wide open with plenty of room for larger parties and patio seating as well for summer drinks. The food is consistently served hot and spicy with just the right level of seasoning. The bar always makes good margaritas and cocktails and the beer has always been cold. This is my go to in town and should be for a while to come. Give it a shot and you won't be disappointed.

Very happy with their good, service and friendly staff! Super fast and hot delivered food, kids food was great and as I said, wonderful friendly staff. We will be coming back! Their prices are great too!

Hands down the best Mexican food in MHK. We visit frequently and the food is always delicious (particularly the chicken chimichanga and fajitas) with the service friendly and fast.

I really enjoyed El Tapatio! Apparently I had a much better experience than some other reviewers. The waiter was very polite and personable and our food came only a couple minutes after ordering (generally I'd take that as a bad sign, but it was delicious so I wasn't too concerned). I went for lunch and got the chicken Burrito Real with queso and rice but without the usual extras (beans, pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream) and it was great. The portion size was perfect--filling but not stuffing--and at a reasonable price ($6.50). My sister got the chimichanga and was equally satisfied. Of course it wasn't authentic Mexican food, but it tasted great regardless! I would definitely recommend going here.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time and meal in this restaurant. Thank you for the food! This might be the best mexican restaurant here in manhattan, ks

Decent food at a good price. Coming from California I expect a lot out of my Mexican food. I had the chili Colorado and it was enjoyable. If you're in the mood, this place is definitely worth a once-over.

One of my favorite places to eat in manhattan and Junction City! Food is always good. If you are craving mexican this is definitely the place to go!

Pretty good, I've been here 3 times now. Chips and salsa and their white cheese dip are really good. My husband loves the gigantic burrito. I've had the fajita salad and the chimichanga and they were both just ok. Unfortunately the servers never know what drinks specials are listed in their board so they aways give us the wrong drink and at the wrong price.

I was bummed when Doe's closed so it took me a while to give El Tapatio a chance. I wish I'd tried it earlier. Awesome salsa, some of the best Mexican I've had. I would have rated it higher but the decor is not the greatest.
(4)Lauren S.
Good food and great service. Very authentic Mexican food and cheap drinks the best!
(5)Erin M.
Service was very fast and attentive (complimentary chips and salsa brought to us within seconds of being seated), drinks were cheap, food was inexpensive and tasty (although I wasn't a fan of the ground beef enchilada that came with my combo). Hubby asked for no mushrooms in his quesadilla, but it showed up stuffed with mushrooms. I'll be back...it's hard to find good Mexican food!
(4)Marsha J.
The waiter was rude, we didn't get all our food, what we did get was pretty gross and rubbery with a strange sauce that wasn't authentic in the least, and the atmosphere was really uncomfortable. Got a shrimp enchilada that was a rubbery corn tortilla with ONE shrimp in it and some watery sauce, for example. The food came out in waves - we got a plate of beans, then 5 minutes later a plate of rice, then 10 minutes later a burrito, then 10 minutes after that the rest of our food. We would ask our waiter where the rest of the food was and he would glare, one time saying something under his breath that caused him to literally run away when I told him I spoke Spanish! People rave about this place but I really recommend you steer clear of it. We weren't the only people treated poorly that day, half the noise around us were other tables complaining because they didn't have their food or the waiter had disappeared. It was a miserable experience and I will never go back. Yelp, please don't filter my review. I'm not a bot and I'm not trying to game the system - this is a genuine review recounting the exact experience I had at the restaurant. Thank you.

Worst restaurant experience ever. Our waitress was a "chatty Kathy," we noticed her talking up a storm with other patrons when we walked in and were seated. She talked a lot at our table, too, often interrupting our conversation not for services sake, but just to chit chat. When she finally brought out our food it was luke warm, the plates were barely warm to the touch. I got the carnitas plate, the meat had a lot of fat on it, was dry and looked old. Honestly, I took most of it home to my dog. The guacamole got dark green within minutes of my plate being placed on the table, unfortunately I'd already eaten a little over half before I discovered it. The waitress completely forgot to bring out my tortillas which were cold and wet by the time I got her attention and she delivered them. Last but not least I was appalled at the pico de gallo. It appeared at least five days old, the onions and tomatoes were translucent and had a dull color. I refused to eat any of it, it looked so unappetizing. We had to wait forever for her to bring our bill, for her to bring a doggie bag, for everything. I got up and went to the restroom and saw that she was leaning with one hand on the wall and talking up a storm with another table of customers! Meanwhile my husband had been waiting with his credit card out for her to scan it for the prior ten plus minutes. Needless to say, we will never be going back! Oh and my tummy wasn't too happy later that night, probably due to the old guacamole that they served. Yuck!

After years of eating Mexican food throughout California then experiencing an utter lack of any good Mexican food in Hawaii, I think it's only fair for me to preface this review with a disclaimer: I am rating this based on Mexican food in Kansas. 2 stars: $1 margaritas The original is best. The flavors (tried strawberry and mango) are little sweet, and you lose that margarita/tequila flavor. 2 stars: exceptional service You really get the feeling of a family style run business, and everyone is nice and helpful. 1 star: for having hot salsa BUT you have to ask for it. The one they bring out with the chips tastes good but has ZERO kick. 1 star: for having cholula, too -1 star: no more sangria -1 star: carnitas Half the meat was tender and moist; the other half was too dry (hence -1). I really appreciate the delivery of the carnitas. Instead of being torn apart already and drizzled with grease/sauce, the chunks retain their own juices, and you can tear in and enjoy both the crunch of the outside and the tenderness of the inside. Yum! Portions are incredibly huge. The gigantic chunks of carnitas, large servings of rice and beans, tortillas, and pile of lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and salsa fresca filled the big plate. Oh, did I mention they brought it out with guac??? sweet! I'm not sure if locals will find the portions huge, since I'm noticing at other restaurants the trend is for gigantic servings (compared to what I'm used to). I definitely plan to go back and try something different. Each visit has been great (food/drinks/service).

Mediocre Mexican-ish food. Service was very good, fast and efficient. Everything else, quite disappointing. Aside from complimentary salsa and chips (which were ok), we had a quesadilla rellena with beef and a burrito mexicano with pork. Both were really unremarkable. The beef was very salty and had too much spice that masked the meat flavor. Pork was better, but dry. Guacamole was just ok. Salad and tomatoes were pale and flavorless. The salsa that comes with the burrito was weird. Not going back.

Highly recommend this mexican restaurant for anyone who is in Manhattan. Atmosphere: Clean and bright restaurant. It has the usual mexican restaurant feel to it. Stucco-like walls, with vibrant colors, laquered high backed wooden booths, and sectioned areas to include a party room. Service: We have been five times since we arrived to the area, and only had to wait on service once. Appetizers: The usual fair, but they will make a custom chorizo queso if you ask. Get the white queso, and ask them to add chorizo to it. Absolutely amazing. Lunch Specials: Well worth the money, taste great, and food is always fresh. Entrees: A little more money gets you about twice the portion size.

I love this place. Good prices (most meals are like 8 bucks give or take) and the food always tastes fresh and home made. Really nice friendly service as well. I love going here for lunch.

Perhaps it is because they are brand new here and enthusiastic, but this place is very good. I hope they keep it up. I ordered a lunch special at 2:40pm; had a beef chimichanga plate. It was delicious. All the ingredients were fresh and plentiful. One pet peeve I have at most Mexican restaurants is the tiny dollop of sour cream they give, but there was plenty on my plate here. The staff was friendly and prompt. I hope they stay in business. I'll be going back again soon. Also worth noting that they serve alcohol.

Best Mexican food found in Manhattan. The queso and good drink specials bring us back every time.

Service is really good, they were very fast to greet, seat, and take your order. The drink specials for happy hour is one of the best in the town of Manhattan, 1.00 margaritas. The margaritas are the best. I ordered the tamales, the sauce on top of it was not good, it seemed burnt. I went with a group of six people and it seems that the best items were anything steak, everything else was ok. They do a good job of preparing whatever you want. I will give the place another chance though at a later date.

Food was great until I found a string in my chimichanga!! GROSS. Then the waitress looked at me like she was confused. Not going again.

I just moved to Manhattan, and I've been extremely bummed about the lack of Mexican food. Thankfully, I found Tapatio. I grew up in Laredo,TX, so I think that I have a pretty good idea of what constitutes decent Mexican food. Tapatio hits the mark well. I shouldn't have to go into much detail--they have all the basics. I had the bistec tacos and was really impressed. Try those! Really good, tender beef. They also have a special on beer on Fridays-- 32ounces! I couldn't even finish the bloody thing... And I call myself a Texan. Jeez, what a disgrace.
