Great food, mind blowing salad, and a huge meal for $15-$20 bucks, but well worth it!

I got the sushi sashimi combo and it was fantastic. It came with an appetizer, miso, two rolls, 8 pieces of sushi and 12 pieces of sashimi. All excellent. I am now in the midst of a sushi coma from so much great fish! Great service too.

This place is soooooo awesome!!!!!! Fishes are so fresh n the food taste so Japanese! Sushi chef treat customers so sweet n The serves are excellent! Shop is tiny but delicate. They deserve 5 stars!

The lunch specials are cheap, the miso soup was good. The crab Rangoon was good, not mind blowing like some of the other reviews said, but good. I had the Cali roll and the Rock n' roll. Cali was bland, but that's to be expected. I always try the Cali roll at a new sushi place just to see if they do the basics well. The rock n' roll had tempura shrimp in it and the shrimp wasn't properly cleaned so that's why the 3 stars.

Really good and fresh! Enjoyed the spread and how quick it all came out. A little hard to understand but easy enough to point at the menu. A+

A friend and I came here for lunch thinking it was still the Babo Teriyaki, but it's now Sushi UNI and we decided to give it a try since we were already there. We were in for a pleasant surprise! My friend ordered the two sushi rolls on the lunch menu and I got the beef teriyaki. We both got the spicy seafood salad - on the house! They must have just opened not long ago to run this special! Both orders came with soup and two crab rangoons. He liked the sushi rolls. My dish was delicious! The steak was cooked to my liking, tender with a little pink in the middle. The thick teriyaki sauce was wonderful! My miso soup was great as well. The server was very nice and attentive. We'll definitely go back again!

After seeing reviews I was really excited to try this place. Overall the food was good not great. The wait time was horrendous. I am giving the benefit of the doubt because it was Valentine's day, but even with that we waited around an hour for our food. The atmosphere left something to be desired. We're going to try it again at some point and see if service time improves.

Decided to try this new place because of the good reviews and they were right! Everything we tried was delicious and the service was friendly and fast.

Went here on a recommendation from a friend, and I was not disappointed. I got the sushi dinner, which is seven pieces and a salmon roll. The fish was delectable, the rice was perfectly prepared, and the pieces were LARGE. None of those one-bite nigiri pieces - these were quite ample. The dinner came with a choice of soups (I got the hot and sour) and two crab rangoon. They also brought out a complimentary plate of seaweed and crab salad which was very tasty. It's a $15 meal (suppertime, not lunch), and I left feeling very satisfied. Is it the fanciest sushi place in the world? No. It's a small restaurant, and the presentation isn't super-high-end, but the food is really tasty, and the prices are very reasonable for large servings. I was very satisfied, and I'd recommend the place to all my friends. If you're looking for an intimate atmosphere where the chef and the waitstaff are attentive and happy to see you, and you get really tasty sushi for a very reasonable price, then this is your place.

Great little sushi restaurant in a strip mall, who knew? Good service, attentive and even anticipated our needs without our having to ask. We were given complementary crab salad as an appetizer, and the cold green tea was refreshing on a hot evening. Our maki rolls came out quickly. The fish was fresh and tasty, and the rice well seasoned. The restaurant appears to be family friendly, though seating is somewhat limited. We saw a couple families with young, well behaved children. They were well staffed and there are both Japanese and English speaking servers. We will be back, and are likely to become regulars.

I accidentally ran across this place when searching Yelp on the first or second day they were opened. On my third visit, I realized the co-owner was one of my favorite people at another Sushi establishment and probably the reason I kept going back there. Sushi UNI will be my regular stop now. With all the choices of sushi around, I still like to "do it my way". The chef will accommodate my crazy requests. Good, very good. The spicy crab salad is delicious, a must have, the sushi is great and the lunch specials can't be beat. But the thing that stands out for me is their customer service. The staff will make your visit a very pleasurable experience and they will know you the next time you walk through their doors.

This place is small yes. But it packs a HUGE PUNCH. The sushi is good and at a good price. Today i tried the regular menu item chicken Teriyaki. It is very good and came with choice of soup or salad. Now I consider myself a crab rangoon aficionado and they have some great ones. The dumplings you have to try as well.

  • Grant G.

Great food and customer service. I particularly enjoy trying the different rolls they offer on their lunch special. Two rolls, Two Crab Rangoon, and a side salad or soup? For under $10.00? And, it isn't just a choice of a handful of rolls. I'm talking about 30(ish) different rolls to choose from. This is a place I will be frequenting many many more time in the future.

This has become a tradition for my son and me when he is home from college. I love the ambiance, staff and the food here. I am not a sushi fan but my son IS. I like the fact that I can get a great meal here (non sushi) and he can have wonderful sushi! We have also had delivery.......not one mistake! Many think that Lenexa is "beige" Johnson County.....Give this place a try! ........only bad note...I agree with other reviews, What is up with the flaps at the front door? I poked a guy in the chest the last time I entered,,,,it was awkward:(

Excellent sushi, generous slices of fish! Delicious rolls and friendly service. This is our new sushi spot! Do not be deterred by the unassuming storefront and small space. This place is a gem!

All I can say is everything is made to perfection. Try the Spicy Crab Salad, and the Tiger Roll! Amazing craftsmanship here. Pride in their food. Andrew from Sushi Mido works here! :)

  • Sijin M.

Hot and sour soup is great. Calamari and crab rangoon are some of the best I've had. And sushi was amazing! Very small place but those usually have the best food.

  • David S.

This is a really great, small, quiet place to get some good sushi. The waiter (who seemed like he might have been the owner or manager) was very friendly and was genuinely excited to see us come in. He gave us a free crab salad because it was our first time there. The food was good overall; the crab salad was excellent, the Dragon roll was very good, and the tuna sashimi was okay. I wouldn't say this is the best sushi I've ever had, but it's worth grabbing if you're in the mood and in the area. My one criticism is that the prices seemed a dollar or two higher than what I'd expect.

I am so excited to find this place. The sushi is excellent. The customer service couldn't be better. The prices are very reasonable. The Las Vegas role is my favorite!

I had never been to this place before and I got the salmon sashimi and it was Devine. It practically melted in my mouth. I'll be back!

Found Sushi UNI tonight and could not be happier! They have a great little restaurant with wonderful staff. The Spicy Crab salad was delicious as were the crab rangoons. We got the sushi sashimi combination and were very happy with the quality and ammount for the price. My husband really liked their fresh wasabi which we have never had anywhere else. My favorite thing was the K.C. Chief's Roll...a sweet piece of heaven! I strongly recommend Sushi UNI for your next sushi fix!

  • Kimberly D.

this place was so great. they gave me a spicy crab salad on the house, and it was fantastic! the choice of rolls was pretty extensive and everything I ordered was amazing. I got a mango roll and an ahi tuna roll, and they came out quickly and were both excellent. great service and nice atmosphere. always nice to find quality sushi in kc--will definitely be back.

  • Ariel M.

Great place great food and great lunch special pricing $11 for 3 sushi rolls, two Rangoon and soup or salad. Egg drop was amazing. Sushi was of decent quality, not the best but up there for Kansas city. Dakoni roll was fantastic, but size was about half a regular roll (no rice or sea weed). The lenexa roll was also amazing, unfortunately the one I didn't like I can't remember the name of. Service was phenomenal, Waiter was pleasant, informative of the menu, and super accommodating. Place was small but still had a decent crowd, definitely going again.

I believe I have found my new favorite sushi place. so small though, man, so very very small, our wait at 1 oclock was 20 minutes and it was closer to 25, but man was it worth it. delicious giant pieces of fish, some of the best crab Rangoon ever, very decent lunch and dinner prices and fairly quick service. added bonus for the Asian message place next door. SCHWING! I will be back.

This used to be Babo Teriyaki where I would get takeout pho . . .I was sad to see them close, but I am happy that a sushi place has moved in! When Sushi Mido was closed on a Monday (lame), we came here after a quick Yelp search. I don't get all the complaints about size . . .it is what it is, and if you want a nicer experience with more space, go to Edokko down the street, ya know? I much prefer lower prices and exponentially friendlier service that I get at Sushi Uni, and I rarely grab sushi for a "nice dinner" atmosphere. The lunch specials are comparable to Sushi Mido in price and product. Honestly though, I prefer the sushi at Mido. It is more flavorful and seems bigger and fresher. The hot n sour soup and the crab rangoon were both delicious all around, and I don't think I have a preference on either location for these items. I am going to return to try the noodle lunch special, and also, just because people were nice here. Not to say I will not have sushi here again, because I will do that, too. It is closer and less pretentious than Mido, and that will grab my business on many days.

After a terrible experience at another sushi place I was a little hesitant to jump back on the sushi train. I had heard great things about Uni's and decided it was time to get my fins wet again.... Oh man, it was Aaaaamazing! Don't be thrown off by the tiny restraunt. While there is only about 7 tables inside we were seated immediately during the dinner rush. I of course had to grab a bowl of egg drop soup (I think it tells alot about a place) and it was fantastic. We were served complimentary seafood salad which was perfectly flavored. We ordered three sushi rolls that looked just as good as they tasted. Our pics for the evening... The Snow White (best I think I've ever had ), the Rock N' Roll and The UNI Roll. I would actually recommend them all. Everything was great... the service, the food and the location. I guess I'll be rolling back here again soon ;)

  • Jimmy N.

Sushi UNI is a fantastic little sushi place, the sashimi combo is a must. They receive shipment in every Tuesdays and Thursdays, so note those days for fresh sashimi for dinner. The owners are very friendly and there's 2 wait staff for a tiny place, so you can expect prompt service. Give this place a try if you haven't already. Cheers...

Loved the Heat from the daily special Hulk Roll. Affordable saki bombs. Great service. Room for improvement on sushi bar size as it only sits 4. Very very close to west coast sushi.

  • Ami T.

Continuing my search for good asian food, we ended up at Sushi UNI. First thing I noticed is that this is NOT a Japanese owned Japanese restaurant (Is there such a thing in KS)? It's not the freshest fish but pretty good. It's pricy if you decide to get actual sushi and not the rolls. We got... 1) Ahi Tuna Roll - Pretty good 2) Spider Handroll - comes with 2 pieces but the crab was a bit old and came with too much sauce. 3) Rainbow Roll - Good. 4) Salmon Sushi - OK 5) Miso Soup - Pretty good. They make their own miso soup! It's NOT the dehydrated kind. :) Complimentary Spicy Seafood Salad (I think it's called...) pretty good. It's just imitation crab, cucumber, spicy mayo. Good service. Good sushi considering how far away we are from the nearest ocean.

  • Grant H.

Probably my favorite sushi place now. The best hot and sour soup I've ever had and all the rolls I've tried are outstanding. Crispy calimari roll is my current favorite. Can't wait to go back!

  • Kay L.

Very impressed with this place. It's tiny, only six or eight tables, as well as a small sushi bar. I ordered a two-roll lunch which came with soup (the miso was quite tasty) and two crab rangoons (also tasty, light and savory.) We asked the server what his favorite roll was, and he recommended the daikon roll, which was truly fantastic -- a beautiful blend of texture & flavors, held together with a paper-thin slice of radish, no rice. The spider roll was also excellent! All in all, it was plenty of food for not a ton of money, and the fish was wonderfully fresh. Service was attentive & friendly throughout. The hanging door curtain, BTW, is called "noren", and in Japan it's commonly hung at the entrance of shops to signal that they are open for business, then taken down again at closing. I have seen them many, many times in old-school Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles, but not so often here in the heartland. Just another sign that these guys are a fairly traditional restaurant.

Best hot & sour soup in KC! Try the HULK roll! It is not on the menu, one of the best rolls you will ever try! it is a little spicy.

Wow. AND I thought that I had tasted all the good sushi in KC. But these guys can make sushi!

The only reason I'm willing to review this tiny gem is that I know it's in a location that many in the city will simply skip. It's my favorite place for Sushi in KC. I've been here alone and with my young kids. Everything we tried was fantastic. The spicy crab salad was an unexpected treat; I could eat my weight in that salad. In my opnion, the egg drop soup at Sushi UNI is better than the local big Chinese chain - and I'm a big fan of their soup. The egg drop at UNI is a bit lighter and fresher tasting. The goyza (dumplings) were a huge hit with my family and everyone wanted more. We made a poor choice in the lobster roll with kiwi; it tasted fresh, but it wasn't to our liking. The other rolls we had were delicious. For a family of five with so much food (we ordered extra since it was our first time) it was a little pricey. That's our fault. We could have done with much less. I stopped in alone for my second visit at lunch and sat at the bar. The two sushi chefs made every order effortlessly and fast. I've never been served so quickly at a busy sushi place. Very impressive by the staff. Even better, their prices on lunch specials are great. Somehow, Sushi UNI has the freshest tasting fish in town. Sitting at the sushi bar here feels like you're in NYC. Good service, quick turn arounds on tables, fresh fish and just the right amount of clutter and cramped space. If you don't turn around and see out the window, you can get a good feel. However, Sushi UNI is clean, doesn't have that... unique... smell of NYC and the people here are friendly. That said, it's not AS high quality as something on the coast in any way. For Kansas City, you can't do much better. I'll be a regular here. It's fantastic and I would order anything on the menu with confidence.

I LOVE sushi! This place definitely reaches my expectations. They have great specials too. My wife is not a fan of sushi but likes Chinese food in general and really likes their General Tso. The dining area is a little small but the food is worth it. You gotta try this place!

  • Anna D.

My husband and I just had delivery and it was so good! The spicy mushroom and crab Rangoon was some of the best we've ever had. We ordered 2 sushi rolls, rock n roll and shrimp tempura and both were fresh and excellent. Highly recommended!

  • Megan S.

Always a great meal here! This place is a diamond in the rough. Small and so good that it can get busy around lunchtime. That's because the word is getting around. I usually get the sashimi combo for lunch and it is SO much food for the price. I like that the lunch comes with crab Rangoon, soup or salad, tons of sashimi, and a bowl of rice. Most places charge individually for all of those and it makes a sashimi lunch ridiculously expensive. Not here! Not to mention the sushi is always fresh! Love this place!!

  • Sandra W.

Husband and I went here yesterday for dinner. It's a small hole in the wall with only 7 tables and about 4 stools at the sushi bar. I ordered calamari & white fish roll. Dinner started off with a free sample of their crispy crab salad! It was an awesome touch and the salad was so good too! Mixture of crab, tempura, and seaweed salad. Next my calamari came out- fried fresh and dusted with a spicy seasoning served with spicy mayo. Not rubbery at all! My white fish roll was beautiful and delicious. They were not skimpy with the ginger on the side either which I love because I always have to ask for extra, but not here. Calamari cost around $7 and the roll was about $10 awesome prices for the quality. You don't pay for ambience here because it's a small place, but the quality of the food makes up for the lack of space. I would definitely come back and recommend this place.

  • Susan C.

I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The inside is super "cozy", if you will. They have a sushi bar with seating as well but be warned...super "cozy". Service is kind of spotty but there didn't seem to be many servers working in that tight little area...I think I saw two. The tempura udon was $9.95 and it comes with two crab rangoons (surprisingly good, typically not a fan) as well tempura appetizers on the side. HUUUUGE portions! They have great sushi lunch specials as well. $7.95/$9.95/$11.95 for 1/2/3 rolls with soup and crab rangoons as well. Love this hidden gem!

  • Henthusiasts C.

I can't say enough about this place. They butcher all their own fish, down to the yellowtail jaw (Hamachi Kana) which is listed as an appetizer but could feed two. Call ahead for it, as it's a limited item. You should try the sashimi lunch with the magic mushrooms. I regularly come up from Lawrence just for this spectacular food.

    (5)
  • Darik S.

Seriously one of the best lunch specials in the city!!! Nice and cozy, friendly staff, and the Royals always seem to be on! The fish is fresh and the hot and sour soup is crazy good! Try the yellow tail and green onion roll!

  • Matthew C.

Lunch special was amazing. The special came with 2 rolls, hot and sour soup (delicious), and crab rangoon for $10. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. For the price it's the best sushi I've had in Kansas City.

  • Robert B.

By far the best sushi restaurant in all KC area. I almost hate to post this because we go once a week and I don't want the secret to get out but the chefs Jason and Andy deserve recognition for the awesome talents. Please stop in and tell em Robert and Emily sent you.

This place is tiny so if your not looking you may miss it, but I definitely refined trying it out! Very fresh sushi and great prices! Spicy girl roll is my favorite and the spicy crab salad is delicious!

Really nice place, good "complimentary" extras. Friendly and authentic feel. Definitely will be back. We had Kansas roll, Las Vegas roll, and rock and roll, all were good, rock and roll was the favorite.

I'm completely clueless as to why this place has so many 5-star reviews. This was actually the second worst sushi I've had in a restaurant in KC and third worst overall in any restaurant. One of the things I should mention right away in case you're planning to go, despite reading this review is that if you want to visit when it's cold, you'd better not go when it's busy! If you happen to get the table right by the door, you will be blasted by cold air over and over. The place is tiny, so they have packed in more tables than they should have ensuring that some of their customers will have to freeze during their meals if they make the mistake of dining there when it's cold. The service was abysmal as well. There were three people waiting on tables in this tiny little place, so one would assume the service would be great, but it was just awful. At first, it seemed like nobody was actually assigned to us as all three of them came by. One of them asked if we had ordered drinks yet when our drinks were on the table. Another of the waitstaff filled my lemonade glass up with water when I hadn't finished my lemonade. Guess I should have been grateful as that was the only refill I received all night. Nobody took our food order for quite some and then the food took a long time to arrive. Once it arrived, nobody asked if it was good or if there was anything else we needed. In fact, we had to flag someone down to get our bill and then it was the wrong one. All of the freezing and the crappy service might have been a bit more tolerable if the sushi was amazing. It wasn't. They seemed to be copying the rolls from other sushi joints around town, but not doing them as well. In addition to three rolls, we had some nigiri which was ok, although the pieces were smaller than I'm used to receiving. The reason I'm giving them two stars instead of one is because one of the two apps we ordered was amazing. My hubby is a big tempura fan, so he ordered some and it was blegh, but I ordered the Spicy Stuff (sic) Mushroom which was like crack (but not actually spicy). If I could be guaranteed reasonable service and no frostbite, I might go back for that item alone. Otherwise, no dice, Sushi Uni.

  • Heidi M.

So yummy! The Sushi chefs are incredible! Pink lady, tornado, daikon. And Spicy crab salad! Everything is fresh and look out for the wasabi! You know some places don't know how to serve the right wasabi. Well not here. Oh, yea, don't forget the homemade ice cream. The taro is just like ice cream should taste.

    (5)
  • Amanda W.

It was just sort of an odd visit. The place was empty except for one table, which made service quick and easy, so points for that. The food though.. highs and lows. The hot and sour soup was good and piping hot. The Daikon roll was tasty, nice low carb option. The Tuna Tataki though, maybe I am just spoiled by my usual places, but theirs were tiny pieces, lacking good seasoning, and the ponzu sauce was nothing to write home about. Also, what is with the sheet in the doorway? Lastly, if your staff is going to sit around and hang out, maybe do it in the back somewhere. Not terrible, but nothing memorable. I'll stick to places closer to home.

Amazing. Simply amazing. I went to Sushi UNI today for their lunch special 3 rolls for $13 tax included. I tried shrimp tempura roll, calamari roll, and spider roll. Before I get into the foods I would like to say that the two chef who prepared my rolls was very sanitary and organized about everything even when the restaurant was packed. Shrimp tempura: can't go wrong with this. Pretty similar to other sushi place. 8 pieces Calamari roll: Never tried it before. Thought it tasted pretty similar to shrimp tempura. It was my favorite. SOOOOOOO good. 8 pieces Spider roll: First time like Calamari roll. Bit bigger roll than the others. Very filling. Didn't like it as much as other two but that's just me. It felt like I was eating fried crab. Probably what it's supposed to taste like but It wasn't for me. 6 pieces The rolls comes with 2 crab rangoon w/duck sauce and choice of soup or salad. I got miso soup as my choice. Crab rangood was IMO better than any other japanese or chinese place I've been to and thought sweet and sour duck sauce went great with it. Miso soup was Miso soup. Tasted good and fresh. Not sure if they make it from scratch but Miso soup is Miso soup. The food alone was an amazing experience but the thing that made me write my first review of a restaurant after having a yelp account for past couple of years was the service. Morgan who was in change of the dining room was very outgoing and had great people skills. She talked to her guests and made everyone smile. She frequently checked on everyone to see if they needed anything and made sure everyone's happy. Chef Andrew who was in charge of making sushi and rolls with the owner, focused on making each and every rolls perfect while interacting with customers when he's done with his task. It was another unique experience to see the owner in person making the food as well. Overall one of the best food and service I had in a very long time and I'll defenitely visit this restaurant frequently from now on. Thank you so much to the chefs and servers! 5/5 :) Oh and almost forgot to mention, I'm not sure if they always do this but while waiting for the for the foods to be ready (which wasn't very long), I've recieved a crab salad on the house which was VERY good.

My new favorite Sushi Spot in KC!! I first heard about this place from a few of my friends in my crossfit gym (and of course searching for places to eat near my house). I was a little hesitant at first when i drove by - it was a small hole in the wall. It was an excellent decision to stay and enjoy my dinner. I ordered the Lavender Lemonade to drink - OMG it was delicious! I ended up ordering the sushi/sashimi dinner with miso soup. It unexpectedly came with crab rangoons and a crab salad. Both were delicious and fresh and a wonderful surprise. Not only was the fish fresh and delicious - but who I believe was the owner came over and made sure I knew what type of fish each piece was and provided recommendations on how to pair them. Was a wonderful dinner experience. More so for me because it was a treat to myself and I was able to enjoy a good book along with dinner. The service was excellent and unobtrusive - which made it much more enjoyable for me eating alone. All to often I end up somewhere where they are overly attentive when I'm at dinner by myself with a book. Instead they made sure I was well taken care of without interrupting. Overall, service and dinner was excellent! I ended up coming back here a number of times prior to writing this review - I even dragged my boyfriend along on one his trips back to KC. Will definitely be back and bringing plenty of my friends!!

Ate a nearby restaurant & the yelp reviews made me decide to get try this place. They have a great lunch menu! I got crab Rangoon, soup, & a roll for under $9. The egg drop soup was pretty hot & the crab Rangoon were cooked fresh. I ordered 2 rolls and both were really fresh & tasty! I will add this to my short list of sushi restaurants!

We came here because of all the great yelp reviews. The place was empty so we were greeted promptly and got a table away from the door. The fabric in the door is strange, you can't see what you are walking into or out of...I wonder how many people have collided because of this. There were a ton of workers there, most just standing around. I ordered the Rock N'Roll and Philly. Both were good, but not the best I've had. The weird thing about this place as one of the guys working/taking orders stared at us the entire meal...uncomfortable. The food was decent, the atmosphere was strange, and if I was in the area, I wouldn't not come here, but I won't be driving out of my way to come eat here.

While living in Oakland, CA we had several great sushi joints within walking distance from our office. But moving back to Lenexa a year ago we recalled the dearth of sushi around Johnson County. But now, there's one more sushi restaurant in Lenexa and it's pretty darn good. We stopped in for lunch earlier this week and experienced a pleasant atmosphere, good service and good Japanese cuisine. We had some of the best crab rangoon I can recall and we tried three rolls--all very good. This place is mighty small, so when word gets around it could fill up fast.

Amazing service! Spectacular food! Best combo fried rice I've ever had! The sushi is great and the generals chicken is the bomb! Strongly recommend!

  • Joshua K.

The restaurant is tiny with absolutely no waiting room if you walk in and the place is full. The food was fair. I ordered a lackluster (but not bad) spicy crab salad for an appetizer, and ordered two forgettable maki rolls. The fish didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste nearly as fresh as other nearby sushi restaurants. Pricing was good, but really not THAT much less than places with better quality food. Someone in an earlier review mentioned sashimi was only $1.50/piece, but that's actually not true (unless you're talking about the 12-piece sashimi lunch special, I guess). Their Facebook page has images of the menu which shows regular pricing for sushi (nigiri) & sashimi to be only marginally lower than the better quality joints nearby. In the end, I spent about $5-7 less than I usually do when I eat at Edokko down the street, but the experience wasn't worth the savings (to me).

We love this place. The sushi is fresh. I like how the sushi is served at the right temperature. Not too cold nor overly warm. Of course some sushi is served warm but when it's suppose to be cold to cool, its served properly. Also what else makes this place great. They DELIVER!!!

I'm becoming very loyal to this little sushi joint. Great lunch special. My only complaint is that the Las Vegas Roll isn't part of the lunch special choices. But the sushi is always fresh and the crab rangoon is awesome! I used to go to Sushi Mido for lunch but now I think this is my new fave.

Only been open for three weeks and I think it's a winner! VERY fresh sushi. We ordered the assorted sashimi platter and the U.N.I roll. Beautifully presented and tasted even better. Also tried the spicy crab salad- refreshing and light. Crab rangoons are great. Hot and sour is hot and sour. Service was friendly and fast. Very attentive, but then again there are only 7 tables in the entire place. I like the exclusivity of it all. The menu is also reasonably priced-if you eat sushi, you know what price range to expect ($6-12/roll) Definitely recommend this place!

If you're driving by you may miss this place because it's located in a strip mall. Don't let the small exterior fool you! This place is big on flavor. Best deals around. Come for lunch to save $$$! But come for dinner because it's the best sushi in Johnson County. Best overall deals will be found at Sushi Uni.

Excellent sashimi, friendly service and a nice, unassuming atmosphere. And was able to get 8 pieces, seaweed salad and miso for under $20.

Fresh, nice little place. Had lunch while in town on business. Service was pleasant, food quality seemed very good and price very reasonable. I base this review on years of stoping in little places like this while traveling for business and as always my own taste buds ! Enjoy!

The lunch special is a very good deal. Two rolls from a good selection with choice of soup and two crab Rangoon for $10. My son and I had different rolls and shared. All were good, with the spicy octopus the real standout. And I mean good not excellent. I've had rolls from places in Chicago and LA that were miles better than this but cost twice or more.

Freaking seriously amazing reasonable price sushi with friendly as heck service. Hot and sour soup is awesome, big pieces of fish on all the rolls and desert ice cream deals are great too.

I love Sushi Uni, the service, the prices, the food. Only issue is that they need more tables in the place!!!! Worth stopping in, spicy crab salad, the Dynamite Roll, Pink Lady Roll, you cannot go wrong here! Best part is the lunch specials - Pick one, two, or three rolls for under $15! With 2 crab rangoon and soup or salad. DELICIOUS and fresh!!

It's tiny, but what they do in this little notch in a strip mall is very impressive. Fresh, innovative, and delicious. The staff is strangely excited about their jobs. We visited today at lunch with a large party. We filled the place with our party of nine. New Years's day and everyone was bright and bushy tailed helping us decide from their pleasantly extensive menu. The chef sent us out some complimentary items, substitutions were no problem... When my daughter spilled my water all over the table they were quick to kid with her and make her feel better, making light of it saying that they needed to clean that part of the floor again anyway!

What an unexpected little gem! This place is a diamond in the rough. Super impressed. My friend and I stopped in here on a Saturday night around 7pm. I didn't know what to make of it when we walked in. One reason being there was a banner hanging from the ceiling right when you open the door that you have to walk through. A little odd. Also, we were the only ones there, which was nice but it still made me wonder why. Some more people trickled in eventually, which made us feel more at ease. We were immediately greeted by the whole staff. For drinks we ordered waters and Pale Ales and they brought them out with chilled mugs and even filled them up for us. The sushi list was pretty impressive with a variety of rolls for such a tiny place. We decided to go with some Calamari and Crab Rangoon to start and also ordered 2 sushi rolls. Before we got our appetizers, the waitress came out with a couple Spicy Crab Salads - on the house! We weren't sure if that was because we were the only ones in the restaurant or if it was a normal thing. Either way it was absolutely delicious and I would pay for it next time if they didn't give it for free. After we finished, they instantly brought us our appetizers. Perfect timing. We were shocked by the size of the Calamari. We were totally expecting a little plate of tiny fried rings, which is why we ordered another app. These were the size of onion rings and were served with a sriracha mayo sauce. It was very light and wasn't overly breaded or oily. Perfect. I think most Crab Rangoon all taste the same, but you could tell theirs was super fresh and piping hot. We were totally satisfied and getting full at this point. But we knew we wanted more. Our sushi came out right as we were finishing the apps, again, perfect timing. The Las Vegas roll was very good (spicy salmon, cream cheese, crab then fried). I probably wouldn't get it again soon. I'd want to try some other rolls on the menu before I go back to this one, but still good. The Dinosaur roll however was amazing (spicy crab, avocado, cream cheese then fried). This was a little more spicy than the other roll, but it was so delicious. I would get this over and over again. I don't usually like to get more than one fried roll, but they were very light and not at all oily. At this point, we were both stuffed to our gills, but totally satisfied. We had some leftovers so the waitress came over and boxed everything up for us. Everyone was super nice, amazing service and some of the best sushi I've ever had. It looks like they have some really good lunch specials which I would love to try. I will be back very soon!

I'm a huge yelp user and love ppl's reviews when making dining decisions. So I'm in KC w my son for a basketball tourn. Tonight, I wanted sushi. This place is fantastic. Started w the spicy crab salad and steamed dumplings. Both were as good as I've ever tasted. I tried the Snow White roll and the KC chiefs roll, both were phenomenal. Great service, very fair prices. No doubt a great experience. The chef is very attentive as is the staff.

We were visiting from St Louis a & found this place on Yelp. Everything was perfect! Love the small cozy atmosphere, friendly & professional staff, the BEST sushi I have ever had, largest pieces of fish I've ever seen, & the complimentary spicy salad. This place has only been here 10 months, hope it never changes. Will definitely be back on our next visit to KC!

Excellent Service, Excellent Food, Reasonable Prices. In fact, the only complaint is the silly banner they hung so low that you have to duck down and walk through it when you enter/exit.

Yes. This place is small and there was a smell of fresh paint but the lunch was delicious. Several regulars came in and were recognized by the staff and chefs. I had the 2 roll lunch special for $9.25 which also came with a salad, and 2 crab Rangoon. Everything was very good and fresh tasting. I had the spider roll and I am glad to find this place as I am sick of Eddoko's terrible service and below average sushi. I will definitely be back as this is a new favorite spot.

This place is great. The prices are great and the food is great. The egg drop soup actually tastes like eggs. What a concept! The sushi lunch special can't be beat. The best deal I've found for sushi for lunch. Crab rangoons actually had more that just cream cheese in them. The spicy seafood salad is awesome. Be sure to try it. The tempura is fresh and crispy. My biggest concern is that once the word gets out, I won't be able to get a seat when I want to.

Such a wonderful place!! The service was amazing from the servers to the sushi chefs. I was floored by their level of customer service! My husband and I ate way too much but everything had great flavor and they offer a great variety. Our highlights -daikon maki -crab salad -combo sushi/sashimi platter. We will be back!

Had dinner here with the BF. The place was pretty crowded so we were sat in the back hallway. I think they might have forgotten we were back there because it took an unusually long time to have a waiter come back. The sushi was so-so. The soup and Chinese dish my BF ordered was good. Make sure you ask what is in every single roll, several have cucumbers even though the menu doesn't mention it and I specifically asked (my BF is allergic). They remade the rolls for us but by the time they were done we just had to take them to go. Next time we will just make the drive up north to Mr. Le's.

My friend and I go here quite often. Their crab Rangoon is awesome and their lunch specials are very economical. We stick to the rolls but have seen other dishes served and it all looks great. I would definitely recommend this place. It's small so keep that in mind if you're going with a group, especially during meal times.

We almost decided not to eat here because it was so small, but I am glad we did! their hot & sour soup was amazing spicy, tart, and had real ingredients opposed to the cheap regular take-out kind. Their crab rangoons were amazing too! Fresh & crisp, and the sauce was perfect also, not the cheap kind. Nothing about this place was half-assed. The owner clearly cares about the quality of the food that he makes. We tried 5 rolls and they were all great, they advertised a honey wasabi roll but I didn't taste much of either in the roll. Their egg drop soup was great also. all of it was sooo worth the money.

Excellent sushi! Swung in after work to grab a to-go order. Had the daikon roll and dragon roll. Both had very fresh ingredients! Price was on par with most other sushi restaurants. I plan to make a trip back to check out the sit down service. Should be interesting if it is any amount of busy as the place is tiny (maybe 8 tables).

The place is amazing. The sashimi appetizer included real crab meat, and I received a complimentary salad that was amazing. I like how they slice the white radish into thin stripes rather than square section strips, makes it more edible for those who are into the white radish. Service was great too and the price very reasonable for the quality!

The best sushi in Kansas City and surprisingly found in a strip mall in suburbia! Tastes fresh and expertly prepared. Try the Snow White and Dragon rolls. It is a true experience for your taste buds!

The food is exquisite; it is equal to what we have enjoyed in the Japantown district of San Francisco. My wife had the Assorted Sushi, a combination of salmon, salmon roll, eel, yellow fin tuna, cooked (bluefin?) tuna. The wasabi was perfectly seasoned and just hot enough. And fresh. The crab rangoon were delicious. They gave us a free crab salad side dish that was wonderful. The Miso soup was terrific and homemade. Not a sushi eater myself, I had the steak teriyaki, which had sesame seeds, broccoli, and other veggies. It was seasoned perfectly, and cooked exactly to my specifications: medium well. The Gyoza -- Japanese pot stickers filled with pork -- were excellent. The sushi chef is an artist. There were so many choices on the menu -- both sushi (a Lenexa roll!) and not -- we have to hit it again for more.

We had lunch here on a Saturday and shared a few dishes: a Rainbow roll, hamachi sashimi, seafood udon and spicy octopus salad. Everything was good. The fish was fresh and the udon was very flavorful. We will definitely be back.

Heard about this place from a friend that was born and raised in japan, so I decided to go today for lunch. The sushi was great! I will be a repeat customer time and time again because of the food. I hope this place does very well and they are able to take some of their profit to change the decor.

Will keep this review short - please note I'm biased as I just moved from the East Coast and grew up in Japan where there is quality sushi a plenty. The service was great, the ambiance was ok, and the sushi was sub par - fish tasted/smelled a bit old. I will give points for creativity and the crab salad which was delicious. I think creativity is being used to overshadow the quality of the fish....its just too much sauce, crispy tempura flakes, etc for me. I would be nervous about ordering just a plain tuna roll...The sushi chef is NOT Japanese (think someone mentioned that in a review).

This place is seriously awesome! The sushi is wonderful, as are all the appetizers. I have no idea how they made crab rangoon special, but they did! The crab salad is a treat, as are the dumplings. The hot and sour soup is truly one of a kind. We had a couple different sushi rolls (Las Vegas and Cali) so nothing crazy, but they were both delicious. We also had some Chinese noodles, which were also super tasty. Everything tasted so fresh! We talked with the owners, and the wait staff was wonderful and attentive. Although the restaurant is small, that is just one perk for a local, hometown restaurant. The local restaurant scene just got a big up with the addition of this restaurant in KC. We will not go anywhere else for sushi in the future!

Really happy with this sushi. Prices are par for sushi in KC, location is strip-mall hole-in-the-wall cute, the salmon (sake) nigiri was to die for tonight. Service was fast and very friendly. Will be back.

I give them a 9.5 out of 10 and that's just because they actually made me pay for the food. Joking aside, this is the hidden gem of the KC sushi/jap scene. I say this from experience, as I have been to just about every single sushi/jap place in the KC area and can attest to the relative quality. I had a sushi roll that was dynamite. (Not a dynamite roll but a rainbow...) and then they brought me a kitchen-made habachi steak that was so much better than the typical habachi thing that i was floored. go out of your way to frequent this tiny spot. you will not regret it. They GET IT! this place is new......so yes it may not be packed all the time. that is a reasonable expectation for a brand new place. and yes, it has a door to the outside. so it is reasonable to expect to be cold if it is cold outside. if you want to be warm all the time, move to Florida and eat sub-par sushi! huge portions, and low prices, a rarity on the sushi scene. If you don't try them out once, i just don't know what to tell you.....

I was not expecting much from a strip mall sushi place in the suburbs of Kansas, but this place is pretty great. Their lunch specials are a great value, and the sushi was great! The actual dining room is quite small, so once it catches on how great this place is, it might be hard to get in for lunch.

I stopped by and ate lunch here for the first time on 5/26 since I found out it was right around the corner from work, and had so many great reviews on Yelp. Let me tell you, they are well deserved reviews! I felt like adding my praise to the list as well. I had the 3 sushi roll lunch special. I definitely think next time I'll only need the one or two sushi rolls, because this ended up being so much food! I got a free sample of the spicy crab/shrimp salad which was delicious! The lunch special came with the 2 crab rangoon (some of the best I've ever had) and a salad/soup (whichever you choose). The sushi rolls I had were: Mix Vegetable Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, and California Roll. I posted a picture on Facebook of the sushi and lots of people inquired where it was/what the sushi was because it looked so darn yummy. This is a really cool little sushi joint that has so much character and charm. I fell in love as soon as I walked through the door. The waiters were so nice and attentive, I honestly felt a bit spoiled. I asked how late they were open and about Sake Bombs and made a mental note to bring my boyfriend back for a date night. This place is seriously great! Don't miss it!

Yesterday afternoon while exploring the area, I saw a little sign that said "Sushi" while on my way to visit the Legler Barn Museum and Rose's pond. I decided to check it out after meandering around and taking photos and was extremely pleasantly surprised! They had a choice myriad of things to eat but I ended up going with the sushi roll lunch special--a great and affordable deal of three rolls that come with two crab rangoons and your choice of soup or salad. I chose the salad. Personally, I could eat crab rangoons until I'm blue in the face or my liver, kidneys and spleen burst--my stomach is too elastic for that ;)--so of course I was salivating like a Pavlov dog in anticipation! So worth it! Not only was the outside a crisp heaven of wonton delight, the inside was sinfully creamy with sweet slivers of sarimi playing with the tangy gooeyness of the cream cheese and paired together with this light, sweet plum sauce they used with it, the flavors and textures just came together in my mouth like an intense ménage à cinq with your four ultimate crushes! I chose the spicy Crunch Tuna Roll and the 87th Street Roll as I was in serious need of some spice, and I also went with a classic favorite of mine: the Philadelphia Roll! Oh! Was I in love! If I was allowed to drink sake, I think I just may have leaned over that sushi bar and kissed that handsome, talented sushi chef right on his unwitting lips! They actually had the avocado in this roll! And not just ANY avocado! HOSS AVOCADO! And boy are all avocados NOT made equal! Having lived in the US Virgin Islands where the only hoss avocados you saw were practically sprouting leaves or sinewy beyond consumption, prices for food could make you eat yourself out of rental and home! I had to put up with THREE years of Philly rolls stuffed with their native avocados which are more floral, have the consistency of an overripe squash, and are more delicate on the pallet--like drinking cucumber water on a hot day! Bleck! Most of the time I would just have them skip the avocado entirely. However, this roll at Sushi UNI made me quiver with delight...there is just something about cream cheese that in and of itself I find so delectable! With the rice wine on the sushi rice adding another subtle dimension of tangy astringency to the magnificent all over flavor the cream cheese delivers as it melts on your tongue and encompasses your mouth, welcoming the remainder of the bite and hugging the rest of the ingredients like a friendly host imparting his wonderful cologne with each embrace he gives to those dear friends as they come in. The salmon, so sweet and fatty, melts on the heat of your tongue coupling with the cream cheese and spreading over your pallet, developing it's mellow smokey sweetness into the nutty green richness of the avocado so yolky with its slight earthen bittersweetness. I sat there waiting a good while before beginning to even chew, the flavors joining together in holy matrimony like some sensual polygamist marriage. I was officially in love! And after having saved this roll for last, with my final bite I was officially spent. And then I also ordered strawberry mochi ice cream. Just for old times sake.

Sad, we have been ordering and eating here a lot, then this past week, unable to place any order for delivery and even closed completely one day, bad experiences like these unfortunately pushes you to look and go someplace else as this not a cheap place to get sushi

Fresh seafood, comparable sashimi to the ones you find in little Tokyo in Los Angeles. My favorite is the rainbow roll. Yummy in my tummy:)

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
