This is a great place to grab a quick buffet lunch without spending a lot of money or time fighting through a crowd. The dining room is small, and the buffet is not expansive, there are about 8 entrees to choose from, as well as soups, egg rolls, rangoons, spring rolls, rice, noodles. Entrees are the standards( Broccoli Beef, Cashew Chicken, Gen. Tsaos Beef, Sesame chicken. ) One dish I find intriguing is Potato chicken,. which are fry-like potato slivers sauteed with chicken and spices, particularly pepper. Very Good. Another high point in the selections are the Chinese green beans, perfectly seasoned and flash fired to a crispy crunch! Buffet and a soda is less that $7. The same lady has attended the dining room every time I am there, and is very attentive to keeping your drinks filled. Nestled in a strip mall next to Rhimann Liquors, its easy to pass up. Not fancy by any means but a good place to invest the $7 for a filling and satisfying lunch.

I was excited to try this place after reading review upon review singing praises about the food. I won't be going back. The only reason it's getting two stars is because the chicken lo mein that I ordered for my kids was good. My General Tso chicken, on the other hand, was not. It was obviously the left over from the buffet (which had already been pulled by the time I arrived). It was hard and nearly inedible. I've had fresh GT chicken so I know what it's supposed to taste like. Afterwards, my stomach was upset so overall, not a good experience.

Authentic Cantonese style Chinese food. When people ask us about Chinese food in greater KC area, this is the place that I will tell them to go. I can't remember the exact dish names, but we always order tofu pot and stew pork with preserved vegetables. We haven't tried the buffet there, so can't comment on the quality of the buffet. But when we ordered from the Chinese menu the food quality has always been excellent.

Not too bad for an American-style chinese food restaurant. Buffet was 5.45 for all you can eat at lunch, which is a bargain for my California budget... Owners are Cantonese, I believe. So the food wasn't bad. didn't try anything from the true-chinese food menu but maybe next time i'm in town. Good place to stop for a cheap bite.

As is mentioned in the other reviews, Lucky Wok has an authentic Chinese menu available which is great. The Singapore noodles are pretty good. I tried the pan fried noodles as well and thought they were tasty, drenched in sauce, but tasty. I am ready to go try some of the other dishes on the menu as well.

Order only from the Chinese menu. Not buffet. Excellent food.

If you're looking for authentic Chinese food in Kansas City, this place is it! I now live in California (where there's thousands of Chinese restaurants to choose from), but every visit to KC, I make an effort to stop by this place. Believe-it-or-not, there are some dishes at this restaurant that consistently top some of the best Chinese restaurants in California. Things that I recommend are: Peking Ribs, Salted Baked Chicken with Green Onions/Ginger, Salt and Pepper Calamari, Taro Stuffed Duck (special order) and any of their clay pot stew dishes. The sauce from these clay pot dishes are amazing and go really well with steamed rice. While the restaurant's decor could use some work, you are really here for the food. If you decide to come here just for the Americanized Chinese food, don't expect to be wowed, but if you are willing to try some new things, be prepared to leave with a happy stomach.

One of the best authentic chinese rest at KC. When you enter the rest, ask for the chinese menu. 100% no MSG at lucky wok. I have been eating this restaurant so many times and the taste is always the same. The quality food is excellent. The service is awesome and pretty fast. Try order Peking Ribs, Salt and Pepper Pork.....I guarantee you are going to like it.

When I first started eating here, I used to eat the buffet, which is middling at best. Then, on a tip from a friend, I asked for the authentic menu, and a whole new world of flavor opened up. I've been to Lucky Wok and Jen Jen's on Metcalf. Lucky Wok wins by a mile. I love their Singapore Style Noodles and the Salted Fish and Shrimp Fried Rice is the best in KC. So, skip the buffet and ask for the authentic menu. You won't be disappointed.

make sure you ask for the authentic chinese menu. i love the salted fish with tofu and nappa in hot pot dish.

Don't let the exterior and interior of this place fool you. They have one of the best authentic Cantonese/Chinese dishes here in KC. Ask for a menu and do not eat off of the buffet. My faves are the beef brisket hot pot, the baked salted chicken, and the seafood flat noodles with black bean sauce. I was a a little disappointed that they stopped making my favorite taro dessert. Service can be slow because there is usually one server, but waitress is still attentive and nice.

Ordered carry out shrimp fried rice, chicken w mixed vegetables and orange chicken. Orange chicken actually had a spicy kick to it which I enjoyed. It was all very tasty so I will definitely be eating there again in the future. I also like how you can order different sizes of entrees small or large.

Lucky Wok, you sneaky devil, you! You're so good at hiding the bounty of your deliciousness from us all! In fact, if you really were what you appear to be on the surface, this would not be a four star review. Here's the secret to unlocking the amazing flavors hidden in this gem: You MUST ask for the "authentic menu" or "Chinese menu." If you do, you will open up a world of amazing options. There is a fried fish with tomato sauce dish on the authentic menu that is like crack! Once you've had it, you'll want it every time you go. But that would be a mistake because there are so many other great things to try! The seafood delight soup is just lovely. In fact, it's a delight! If you order it and have fewer than 4 people at the table, you will end up taking some home which I promise, you will not regret. I tried the beef brisket curry dish last night and it was amazing. The brisket itself was a bit tough, but it added a really nice flavor to the curry. The curry is served mixed with these incredible broad noodles that appear to be homemade. Service is friendly and fast, but refills on water and ice tea can be a bit slow. They could use some larger glasses which would prevent the need for refills so quickly. Lucky Wok is on my top 3 list of Chinese restaurants in Kansas City. P.S. There are a few things on the authentic menu that are not translated to English. It's because they think nobody but Chinese people would even try these items. My husband asked them to translate at one of our trips which led him to order a dish with bung (it is what you think it is) against the waitress's strong objection ("Americans don't eat!"). If you're incredibly adventurous, you can ask for translations!

Went there about 11:45AM Buffet was fairly full and was maintained. Fresh product brought out every 5 to 10 minutes, Staff was courteous and very quickly to service. Food was fresh and hot, eggrolls were so so could use a new supplier on those. Restaurant was clean and well-maintained. Will definitely be returning. Buffet $8.50 per person including soda. Better than their competition just kitty corner from the intersection, and at better price.

Amazing service paired with amazing food! I love family owned restaurants like this! I have been looking for a comparable Chinese restaurant from the one I grew up with in Cali-- and this one fits the bill perfectly! Things aren't drowned in overly sweet sauces and vegetables keep their crisp texture rather than soggy! I will continue to go to this place!

I went for the buffet. This is not to be confused with the large, generic Chinese buffets. This is a Chinese restaurant that also offers a buffet. Everything was very good and it was only $7.00!!!

This is now my "go to" Chinese restaurant. I also only order off the "Chinese" menu.

All of these good reviews got my hopes up for this place. Lucky Wok was a small restaurant with a mini-buffet bar. I met 10 others here and it felt like we were in our corner by ourselves. I had to let someone know that we were ready to order when we were ready for quite awhile. Also, we had a large group and there was another large group as well. It seemed like there was confusion or something as the waitresses thought we had more people when a few people cancelled at the last minute and that caused them to be unhappy. Just something to think about... make sure you don't have people cancel at the last minute. I ordered the Sauteed Beef Brisket with Seasoned Vegetables ($9.50) while everybody else ordered their own thing. Then, we all shared and did a family-style dinner. After we ordered a bunch of dishes (probably 9 or so), we all waited what felt like a long time for our first dish to come out. After the first dish came, then it was a steady flow of dishes that came to our table except the last one. The food was okay at best in my opinion and the prices were inexpensive. We did manage to finish everything but I didn't think it was anything special. One thing I noticed was there was no air conditioner unless they didn't turn it on when we went. They had a few ceiling fans but those weren't efficient so it was really warm for most at our table.

Loved it! The staff was nice and welcoming and the food was hot and great! The fried dumplings are amazing! I'll definitely be back.

It was nice surprise to find a Chinese restaurant that has a traditional menu option instead of just the normal Americanized fair. Definitely go for the traditional Chinese menu.

Very good food at a very reasonable price. Most people get take out but you can eat there. Steamed dumplings are the best.

Order from authentic Chinese menu. Steam chicken with garlic on the top is the best. Peking ribs and Deep fried intestines pretty good also.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurant in the town. Have been eating at there for more than 15 years and going strong. The owner (is also the cook) cooks very good authentic Cantonese dish. I always ask Chinese Menu for Chinese people, so I can get real Chinese. Oh, I always tell waitress: No MSG please, Thanks! (for my health) Every time when we were there, other table's customer always asked waitress what we had? and they want to order the exactly same dishes like ours. Some customers even can't wait until waitress to come out from kitchen, just came right over to ask us which we don't mind to be the ambassador for the owner. We even joking to tell those customer that Lucky Wok IS our kitchen!! When owner saw the order we made in the kitchen, she always came out say "HI", greet us. We are very happy to see her every time and ask: how do you know we are here? She said: Of course I know you are here, when I see the order, I know it's YOU!! That means: we really really eat at there a LOT. XD See? How homey feeling it is? Plus authentic, delicious food. That's why I give them FIVE (*****) STARS.

This place is excellent. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 are a few small disappointments (that are all, by the way, very easy to work around) 1)They don't deliver, but this seems common with small family run amazing Chinese places. 2)They are closed on Sundays, the holy day of carryout. 3)The Chinese Menu (the only menu is my opinion) is a bit pricey. I recommend the Seafood Pan friend Noodles- $9.75 but easily 2 meals worth if not 3 and they serve the carry out perfectly, with noodles and sauce separately so you can store it without it getting mushy overnight. Also the Spicy Eggplant- $9 is wonderful and also at least 2 meals worth. Don't be fooled though, it is not vegetarian, there are sneaky (delicious) pieces of pork in there! The egg rolls and crab Rangoon are also phenomenal which doesn't seem like an amazing feat but when you get bad ones other places its so disappointing! My less adventurous friends love the General Tso's Combo for $5.75, it is served with crab rangoon, egg roll and fried rice! It's a great deal but pales in comparison to the Chinese menu in my opinion.

There's a reason I've been coming here for years. This place changes you. Once you've been here, the bar for authentic Chinese food near Kansas City is set pretty high up there, and it's hard to find anywhere that matches up. The building is in no way attractive, but service is fast and the food is definitely worth it. Be sure to order off of the Chinese menu! My favorite is the salt and pepper pork ribs, while my parents favor the ginger & green onion chicken (not the exact name...you can try ordering it in chinese! chong yo ji) Tip: Ask for your food with no MSG!

This is the last time I will trust Yelp. Ashley M. must be an idiot to like this garbage. I walked in expecting a decently outfitted chinese restaurant. Boy was I wrong. I walked in at 145 in the afternoon, and sat down. The Very nice waiter took my drink order, and I went to the buffet. What I saw was the most pitiful excuse for food I have ever seen. The white rice was completely dry, the other foods were charred or had been sitting too long, there was no assortment. The drink I ordered (A diet pepsi...) was syrupy, and not very carbonated. Avoid this place. It is absolutely AWFUL.

Lucky Wok is one of three "real" Chinese restaurants in the KC Metro area. They cater to those looking for General Tso's Chicken as well as the folks looking for Ong Choy w/ Garlic. This place has your typical Chinese buffet so if you're looking for real Chinese food, just tell them you're "ordering from the menu". One dish they have on menu that the other two Chinese joints don't have is "Chinese Style Fried Chicken". ABC Cafe and Jen Jen's, while both awesome Chinese joints, require 24 hours advanced notice for this. The caveat here is it usually takes 30 minutes to prepare. I also always order the Beef Brisket Noodle Soup (ensuring they use the yellow Cantonese noodles). The broth is amazing and excellent for cold weather. Next time you visit Lucky Wok, bypass the buffet and tell them you want to order from the menu. If you don't know what to order, just ask. They are very friendly and will offer some suggestions based on your palate.

Absolutely one of the best Chinese food places in the KC Area. As in some of the other reviews for this restaurant, the place is not the most attractive (think 80s red vinyl booths, wood paneled walls, and drop down office ceilings), but you go to this place for the authentic food. Ask for the chinese menu and don't go for the buffet. Our favorites on the menu are the dried-fish shrimp fried rice, peking ribs, salted-baked chicken (the ginger/green onion chicken in Kathy S.' review), and any of the pan-fried noodle dishes. Also ask about the stir-fry snow pea leaves.

Go there for authentic chinese. S&S chicken, almond chicken, generals...come on. You can get that at any chinese buffet. The seafood hotpot is great. Nothing scary in there - maybe squid, but that's the extent of it. Really good flavor. Black pepper steak. Very tasty...but this is not a typical american steak so do not expect that...chinese food! Not a fan of the singapore noodles.

Solid Cantonese menu, wish they had a slightly broader menu, but what we had there was solid. It definitely took care of my crave for Cantonese food, and could hang with your run of the mill Chinatown restaurants in Chicago. The staff were nice, especially by chinese restaurants standards. I would definitely comeback again.

Don't judge by the appearance-- the food is amazing considering we do not have a lot of options for authentic Chinese food on KC. Lucky Wok serves authentic Cantonese style Chinese food-- be sure to ask for the authentic Chinese menu and you won't be dissapointed, uenlss you are looking for sweet and sour chicken or general Tso chicken. All the items are good and tasty on the authentic Chinese menu. but below are my recommendation: * salted fish chicken fried rice--yummy!! * Yu Shang egg plant * seafood tofu pot * salted and pepper pork ribs * Peking rib And just so much more :)

You can order online for carry out or dine-in. You can even choose the amount of spice they add to the hot dishes, or request no onions etc. If you are more adventurous, ask about their special menu. They have a small lunch buffet or you can order otherwise, but the food is always good. My favorite Chinese restaurant.

Like most of the reviews have said, forego the buffet and ask for the Chinese menu! It may look dingy but the food is pretty legit. Jen Jen and ABC Cafe still may be my favorite but this place isn't too far behind. Looked like there was only server but she was pretty efficient. Located in the same square as Panera and Panzon's, to the right of the liquor store.

I love this place, they have good authentic chinese food which is what I'm looking for in a restaurants I go. I ate there a few times and they had never dissapoint me before. I love one of their dish, I forgot the name but it has pork, pig stomach, and egg in it, it's a little spicy but very tasty. Definitely would order from them again!!!

What is with people in JoCo leaving five-star reviews for mediocre Chinese-American joints? This place is family-friendly, and not terrible. I ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken for my daughter. The sauce was yummy like your average sweet & sour, and her chicken was crispy. But the Chicken Fried Rice was so greasy. The vegetables in my Kung Pao Chicken tasted like they were previously frozen, and the meat was gritty... Just your typical cheap Chinese. Nice people. Average food. Good crab ragoons. I'm still on the search for Chinese food that is more authentic.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
