Food was delicious, but the wait and the staff tending to the table HORRIBLE!! I ordered the mimosa, that was really strong. No complaints just the first time I had to sip at a mimosa was new to me. The fresh house made donuts LORD yes. Made me appreciate anybody who does this and it can taste that some made them with love. I had the chocolate covered donut filled with some type of banana custard. yumm. We went with the buffet brunch so I could be greedy but the wait time for this made me want to leave. It came with baked ham, ground lamb gravy on top of a nice biscuit, eggs benedict with a slice of ham, veggies quiche, and smothered potatoes. The quiche and potatoes were a homerun for me. I couldn't escape the heaven it sent me to. I would love to know how they seasoned the potatoes. Side of fruit was blahh. I threw some blueberries in my drink for looks and maybe a slight infused taste. We sat by the window eating and watching the snow fall. If I didn't have this view I believe my experience would have been worse. The second plate for the buffet took I believe 30 mins to get to our table. Now is it worth it, Yes if you have time to sit around and catch up. No if you are looking for a place that serves food in a decent time. I wouldn't come back to be seated to eat, I ill probably figure out a way to order to take out. Making the transaction much better. I love the food and pastries so i'm sure i will be figureing out some3thing soon

Went here for husbands birthday. No information when seated about appetizers or specials; yet other diners were informed. All drinking glasses seemed hazy instead of sparkling. I haven't tried brunch or lunch just the dinner service. We were not impressed.

The donuts are not of this world... they are heavenly. I was blown away with the flavor, texture and feel. This was a wonderful experience, can't wait to try their other items!

I love this place! Food was great, people were nice, and the atmosphere was inviting. The menu is small, they make everything to order. They can make most of the menu gluten free. I will be coming back every time I am in Leavenworth!

Bassa Prua is our favorite Leavenworth restaurant. The food is so fresh and delicious. The staff is great and very helpful. Parking was convenient and close to the door. When you visit, be sure to have a wonderful doughnut.

I've been here twice so far. The food has been excellent both times with fresh ingredients and complex flavors. The service can be hit or miss. Everyone I've met that works here has been very nice and polite, but the service could be more attentive, particularly if there will be a long wait for the food and people at the table have empty water glasses. I'd also suggest making the lunch service quicker. This wasn't a problem the first time we went (got our food in 10 minutes or so), but the second time it took over half an hour to get our food, and we were one of only 3 tables in there. While this may be okay for dinner service, it crosses it off our list when it comes to weekday lunch when we don't have too much time to spend. Overall, this place has great food, but make sure you have some time to wait!

Handsome Husband and I had planned a date night at a fancy place in KC, but after a busy Saturday decided to stay local for dinner. This was our first time at Bassa Prua, but we'll be back! As a couple of other reviewers have noted, this is a take-your-time dining experience, which was perfect for us. Our server was sweet, and i really appreciated that the chef came around to say hi and ask about our meal. First we tried the mushroom cap appetizer, which was a big portion but probably not something I'd crave. Handsome Husband had the prime rib, which he said was quite good. But the star of the show was the gyro plate. Having traveled in the Middle East and lived in cities with large Greek and Turkish populations, we have pretty high standards for this type of food; this is the real deal. Yummy lamb, great sauce, well-seasoned rice and hummus, and great pita. And who knew you could find dolma in Leavenworth?? Yum!!!

I had the brunch which was amazing! Staff was super friendly also. Great atmosphere. Can't wait to try lunch and dinner. I can't believe a place so delicious is in Leavenworth. This restaraunt is a city gem.

This is my FAVORITE place in Leavenworth! And the best donuts you have EVER eaten! They are unreal, please do yourself a favor and go get one or three on the weekend. The weekend brunch is great. The bourbon glazed ham is sooo delicious. The shrimp and grits are so delicious too with the cajun sauce in the bottom. The gyro is also delicious! Definitely check it out, you won't regret it. Moms they do have tablecloths and no more kids menus.

I ordered the grilled peacock Panini, which was very good and well presented. I ordered a salad as a side, and it was very good, too. The server was very attentive and nice. The place is nice, but kind of old-fashioned and dark. My friend ordered the all-you-can-eat brunch, and we just found it kind of odd that he had to ask for what he wanted more of, and the server would get it, as opposed to him just going to a buffet and getting it himself. This place was recommended to us by a certain Candle Queen in that neck of the woods. Glad we tried it, and it was very affordable.

This charming place has a very initmate dining experience. I was not sure at first if they were open because it isn't that obvious from out side. But as soon as I opened the door I was greeted by the friendly staff. I was early for lunch so I had my pick of the tables. The lunch nemu seems standard from the reading but the gyro I ordered was anything but standard. In addtion to being promptly served the gyro was very well plated and the meat was obviously made fresh (not carved off a 10 day old spit). Along with my sandwich was a warm and yummy chicken, curry and apple soup. It was an excellent companion to the sandwich. I thought I wanted fries until I tasted the soup. This is a great place and I will definitely be back to try more offerings. Unfortunately it seems that the place offers the best of what it has on Friday nights and weekends. Since I am from out of town and only get to visit here during the week I am going to miss all the things people rave about. Maybe one day....

YELP hours are wrong; they're open until 8pm. Wonderful salmon salad and gluten-free cookies that were so good, I had to double check with the chef to make sure they were ACTUALLY gluten-free (they were).

My wife and I have eaten twice at Bassa Prua. Highly recommend it for those of you living on post or nearby in Leavenworth! Please support this establishment to ensure its survival. The vegetable lasagna is some of the best we've ever had and we arrived to the Leavenworth area from southern Europe. The staff is friendly and the chef clearly knows how to prepare savory dishes. Simply put, it's one of the best options available in the historic downtown area. The wine selection and availability is one area for improvement. Both times we arrived, specific red wine selections were unavailable leaving little to choose from. Regardless, we look forward to returning in the near term. Keep up the good work!

Bottom line: 5 for the food, 5 for the extremely friendly salient service, and finally a 5 for reusing downtown space. Our party ordered 2 Italian, 2 Greek, and a German dish that were all excellent. Very representative of the meals you would receive in those countries and that is the bottom line. Recommend for those not looking for fast food or the express all you can eat buffet!

While visiting Leavenworth , KS, we happened upon a local restaurant called Bassa Prua . This restaurant has a varied menu with ethnic dishes from around the world. We visited 3 times and each time we were wonderfully impressed with the variety, the quality and the freshness of the food. The atmosphere is charming and the wait staff is pleasant, efficient , and knowledgeable about the food choices. This restaurant also has homemade donuts that are to die for. If you are in the area , we highly recommend that you give it a try .

A coworker and I stopped in today for the first time. I was happy to see the familiar faces of three individuals who now work here have worked at other places in town and are now here. The service was great and very personable. The owner / chef came to our table to introduce herself and then checked in on us again later. We tried the spaghetti, gyro, and a couple of desserts (key lime pie and chocolate mousse. Everything was tasty. We will likely be back again soon to try out a few more dishes.

This place just misses the mark for dinner. We have gotten pastries and they are wonderful. Dinner was so so. It's never good when the salad dressing (house balsamic they make there) from your side salad and the lobster bisque before the meal are the best parts. (They were both excellent though!) The yeasty rolls were also great, especially dipped in the soup. The Jagerschnitzel was chicken fried steak, only pork. There were no mushrooms either. It was just ok. The Penne pasta alla Vodka was angel hair. Good flavor, but wrong pasta and not really a vodka flavor. Desserts were great, staff was excellent. Entrees just missed the mark. I'm not sure if it is just an over ambitious dinner menu - perhaps a smaller, more focused menu would allow for more hits than misses. The atmosphere is very classy. Which was really nice to find in Leavenworth.

This place is great! The food was great and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. There's a musician in the back playing guitar and he sets a really nice, romantic mood. We had the truffle scented petit lamb chops, the lasagna, and the Ahi tuna salad. A three were outstanding. The chef came out to greet us and ask about our visit, a really nice detail. The service was also great, very attentive and courteous. The size of the dishes is also generous and you won't leave hungry. The dishes range around $13-$19, well worth it. I will be coming back tomorrow for their brunch (10a-2p) for what sounds like a great time as well. I will also be coming back to try their other dishes. They have food from France, Italy, Morocco, Greece, Germany, and good 'ol USA. Two big thumbs up. Strongly recommended. Update: The brunch on Sunday was also great. The service was a bit slower but it was busy. The cinammon rolls were warm and fresh and the eggs Benedict were awesome. Overall, a great experience.

This review I am giving is after 3 times of eating here. The first time I was introduced to their food was at a social gathering and this place was the catering service. the food they served then led me to believe I was onto a winner. so like a hungry lion, I persued going there again and the first thing that knocked the wind out of me are the hours of operation. this place is only open like 3 or 4 days a week and some days they are open in the afternoon, sometimes in the morning (depending on which day they are open). you get dizzy just trying to figure out when they are open and operating. the 2nd time I come in, i'm thinking that now that I have the time down, I know the food will be all that. (NOT). first they ran out of the special two-toned donuts I liked and only had these tired glazed ones left (of course they said they don't make fresh ones until the next morning) I decided to take my food to go because i had somewhere else i had to be. I ordered a brunch to go...when I go to pay for my food, i find out that I am being charged a take out fee. what? whoever heard of a take out fee? and the fee was 5 dollars! this still didn't deter me, so I come back one last time...the old college try...I bring my mom who is on oxygen with me for a brunch date and from the moment of seating, the waiter acted as though my mother scared him because she was pushing a huge tank with tubes in her nose. it must of really bothered him because everytime he took our order, brought food out, he would only talk to me and not her and this is where i finally said.."not again". their food is good, but has declined in value each time we ate there, but non courteous staff who cannot treat all customers the same, is unacceptable. sick patients should be treated with respect...

Not sure what all the hype about here is. The food is decent, although the portions are small and the service is really lacking. I'm not sure if it was because of the time of day, but I just was not feeling it. My sliders had lots of bun, and so little meat. I actually just discarded my bun and ate only the meat. It's sad that I left feeling hungry. the waitress did offer us donuts, which I passed on. I'm not sure if this is a daily occurrence. I will probably be back again, but it's won't be my first choice.

I had high hopes coming here based on the reviews. We almost bailed out when we saw there was no one else there and a weird musty smell permeating the place. We were quite hungry though so decided to take a chance and hope for the best. Maybe it was an "off" day or maybe lunch just isn't their thing but overall our experience wasn't good. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan sandwich and it was mediocre at best. The bread appeared to be the type of hoagie buns one would find at a day old bread store and the sauce was blah. I actually gagged on the bread/sauce combination and ended up discarding the bread and just eating the filling which was at least palatable. The fries were okay but how hard can it be to mess up fries? My wife had the sirloin steak and fries and said both were just okay. Like I said, maybe we just hit them at a bad time or something but we will not be back. Next time, we will trust our instincts when we enter an eatery at regular mealtime with no other customers in the place.

Tonight we visited Bassa Prua to try the new menu. To say it was outstanding is an understatement. Chef Elena has revised her menu and now it is a culinary tour-de-force. Gone are some of the more mundane items such as sliders, and in it's place is a savory lamb pie. Ahi tuna has been added to the menu and now you can treat yourself to not one but tours of the cuisine from five different countries. Of course there are regular menu items available as well. What I like the most about the food at Bassa Prua is the fact that the vast majority of these dishes are not available anywhere else in Leavenworth. Lamb is prominently featured in several of her dishes and her artistry with this delicate meat is clear. Today my wife and I shared an appetizer of Papas Rellenas. These potato balls, stuffed with meat and vegetables are larger than a golf ball and four of them come in a serving. The menu says these are an appetizers but with a side salad they would very easily make a filling meal. I decided I wanted a tour of Spain and my wife took the tour of Germany. In Spain I had a seasoned chicken breast with chorizo, topped with a sauce of red peppers and on a bed of polenta. These flavors worked well together with the chorizo and sauce complimenting each other perfectly. For Germany it was the wiener schnitzel with a mushroom gravy on a bed of mashed potatoes and a side of red cabbage. Again, this was a perfect combination with everything working together in harmony. When you dine at Bassa Prua desert is a must. You can't help but see the desert case when you come in the door with a tempting variety that makes you question if you want to skip dinner and go straight to desert; but don't, you will miss an unparalleled dining experience. One of the things that makes Bassa Prua special is their attention to detail. Little things like wait staff that is attentive, but not overbearing and coffee ground and brewed when you order it sets this restaurant apart from the others. If you have not tried Bassa Prua you should give Chef Elena and her staff the opportunity to "wow" you with outstanding food and service.

My wife and I gave this restaurant a shot on a Sunday Morning. We are frequent diners in many of the Leavenworth and North Kansas City restaurants. They had a all you can eat brunch that they bring to you, prixfixe as my wife calls it. The staff was really attentive and just kept bringing out food. It was really good, I mean really good. I'm not a restaurant snob, but when the biscuits and gravy have a cool herb flavor to them, and the little muffins are sooo fluffy and melt in your mouth...yea I could go on. Let's just say, my sunday yard work was happy and inspired! As a music teacher, I will say that the guitarist that played background music was perfect. Our tab was $33+tip for tea and the meal. We will be back!

We love this restaurant! Best in Leavenworth.. I can't understand the negative reviews..because every time we have gone in the chief has greeted us, the service was awesome and the food wasn't over-processed crap! If you don't like it.. Just stick with Applebee's.. Because this is an local original restaurant:)

The fettuccine is out of this world! Our server was simply amazing and the owner is personable and came to every single table to talk to her customers. It's a shame we live out of state and can't be regular customers because I am craving this place! Remarkable food and staff!

My husband and I were looking for somewhere local that we had never been to before for lunch today. We happened across a sign for Bassa Prua's Sunday brunch buffet, and decided to give it a shot. I had eaten at and enjoyed the food at Chef Elena's super fun Cafe Chillingo, and had heard that Bassa Prua was in the works. I'm very glad we found Bassa Prua today, and we are looking forward to going back again and again. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, and the brunch buffet was thoroughly explained. The friendly and attentive staff bring food to the tables from the kitchen, and you can choose to eat what you wish. I am not exaggerating when I say that everything I ate was wonderful. The glazed ham was what you'd expect, but the biscuits and gravy were very savory and flavorful. The Eggs Benedict came with a perfectly poached egg. Other offerings included ripe fruit, sweet little muffins that were delicious and crazy fluffy. Beignets warm from the fryer were just perfect! Pork tenderloin on a bed of mashed potatoes I thought were very good. Roasted potatoes were crunchy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. Everything I tasted was flavorful and perfectly seasoned. And the food JUST KEPT COMING! The sweet chef/owner Elena came out to meet us and make sure everything was to our satisfaction. We were very happy to find Bassa Prua and cannot wait to try one of their prix fixe theme dinners, cooking demos, or just happy hour.

Had lunch here with a friend. The food was average but the service was absolutely terrible to the point where I will not return to the restaurant. The server was very slow and we were the first costumers seated in the dining area. I never received the drink I ordered (after reminding the server more than once). Our meal came with soup/salad but that did not arrive on our table until lunch was served. The soup the server brought out was the wrong soup ordered- my friend said it was very watery when the correct one came. The grits were not cooked all the way but did taste pretty good with the gouda chunks in it. During the meal, we were not asked if we wanted a refill on our drinks (I had to ask for water) or needed anything else. The server removed my plate however left my friend's and placed our checks in front of us. She did not ask us if we wanted anything else- coffee, tea or dessert. We told her we wanted dessert and she looked puzzled. The server explained she did not have a dessert menu and we had to get up and leave our table to see what was in the case up front by the door. Upon returning to our table, we placed an order and waited a while before it arrived. We were not given any clean silverware to eat our desserts with. The server watched as my friend cleaned off her spoon with her napkin to place in her pudding. She then asked if she wanted her fork back off her plate that she was carrying. We were stunned! The desserts were beautiful, tasty and made from scratch. This was the only impressive part of the meal!!!!! We had to leave our table and go to the front to ask for our checks as she never came back. The server still did not have them ready nor knew the prices of the items we purchased. When we paid, we both realized we never once saw an itemized bill for our lunches. Outside of the desserts I would not return there for a meal.

We went to their reservation Friday Dinner. Tonight's dinner was an Italian theme. We we seated and brought the wine menu and told they did not have any Chardonnay or Cabernet or Merlot, but they did have a mixed red wine. Interesting! Who has an Italian themed dinner without red wine?!!! The appetizer was calamari which was rubbery and the fried batter was raw. Then the salad arrived without dressing. We waited quite some time for the entree. Our linguini with white clam sauce was served with 4 tiny unopened clams!! Everyone knows you should not eat clams that have not opened!! The waitress took the plate away and returned with another 4 small clams. This time they were open. We are still skeptical as to if we will be sick later. Dessert was 2 tough dough balls that were supposed to be apple fritters. This was a very disappointing meal.

In a town that doesn't have many great choices when it comes to food, Bassa Prua is a godsend. Hands down, the best restaurant in Leavenworth. My husband and I just moved here from the DC area, so have eaten at some amazing restaurants. When we saw the food choices here, we were a little depressed and figured we would have to drive 40 minutes to KC for a decent meal; however, on a random stroll through town, we stumbled upon this little gem and have been here 3 times in 2 weeks. The coolest thing about this place is that there is a themed menu every Friday night. Morocco, Gibraltar and Crete are some of the recent places that have been celebrated by the chef. It's really fun and a great way to try new things! The food from the regular menu is also very tasty, and portion sizes are rather large, so be prepared to fill up or take a little home for lunch the next day. So far, I've had the bourbon glazed salmon, the lamb gyro and a grilled chicken salad + I always try everything from my husband's plate, as well. Everything has been amazing. My only complaint is that sometimes the chef will run out of certain things due to a lot of reservations (or a lot diners who didn't make reservations), but she has always come out to the table to make it right. Bassa Prua has definitely become a regular date night spot for my husband and I! We always leave full and happy.
