Great rolls, not as atmospheric as the downtown location, but great sushi all the same. They recently updated the happy hour menu as well to include a lot of rolls and appetizers which is much improved.

If you prefer "americanized" japanese food and recognize rolls as a major part of sushi, this is the spot. A lot of rolls are available and taste good. However, if you are looking for some sort of "authentic" japanese food, this is not the place. tsuyu sauce for soba was almost like just soy sauce and too salty. You'll see the positive reviews come from rolls. Noodle menus are not recommendable. Order rolls.

Really not sure why this place is considered one of Lawrence's best sushi bars. Let's start from the top, shall we? There's a great importance in cleanliness within restaurants, in my opinion. For some reason our waiter brought forks, without napkins and set them on the table. The straws also were not kept in wrappers and were placed on the table as well. Call me neurotic, but that bothered me. A lot. Obviously. I could not force myself to eat the salad after two bites and was even more disgusted to find that it cost me $4.00 -- Iceburg lettuce, not fresh with very thick and strong ginger dressing. That's it, no other toppings. As for the sushi, it was pretty awful as well. Luke warm. Overpriced. For some reason, this location felt it was necessary to keep the temperature at 78 degrees when it was 81 outside, so that kind of ruined my appetite as well. Point blank, I will not be returning. I also do not think I will waste my time attempting the downtown location.

I've heard nothing but great things about Yokohama. After coming here, I don't know if I will return. For starters, while it was not summertime (yet) outside, the air conditioning was not turned on. The inside temperature was already 79 degrees. This may seem like splitting hairs, but stop being so cheap and turn your system on already, it was 86 degrees outside. I ordered the three roll lunch, a California roll, a spicy tuna and a spicy salmon roll. The lunch said it came with miso soup on the menu. We were asked if we wanted the salad. Figuring this was a replacement for the soup we decided to go that way. The salad as less than favorable. Ice-burg lettuce and a terrible ginger dressing that tasted worse than my own vomit where the lowlights, but the cucumbers were cut in a cool way. I have not tried any of their sashimi, but if it tastes anything like the tuna roll, I would sat skip it. I've had better quality tuna out of a Dillon's cooler. All of this would have even earned them a two or three star rating. But the bill came. Nothing like being charged four dollars for a salad you've barely eaten. My wife asked about the miso soup replacing the salad and we were told there was no miso soup with the lunch. There's nothing I hate more than dishonestly on a menu. Yokohama flat out lies about what comes with their meals, and that is absolutely unforgivable. PS. Is there any Asian restaurants that give you nice chop sticks? The bamboo ones are getting old.

My husband and I have been going to Yokohama since we have been together (about 10 years). After our experience last night, I'm not sure we will be back. We had a waitress who could not remember 3 items, she said she needed to write it down, then didn't have a pen, so she walked away to get one, She came back and took our appetizer order, we wanted to just hang out and take our time, we were on a date. There was another waiter there, an older man, while we ordered our appetizer he kinda creepily came in behind her and appeared to also be writing down our order as well. The male waiter was kinda killing the ambiance. There was no music like usual, and his voice boomed through the whole place, making his dumb jokes and rhetoric available for all ears. When he brought out our Heart Attack, he said "here's your appetizer that is better than it sounds." Really? You just don't say that when you deliver food. He also seemed to not be able to stand that we wanted to take our time because he kept sending our waitress over to our table to see if we were ready (because he is so loud, we knew he was talking about us). Then we had to remind them about our snapper appetizer (about 20 minutes later) and it actually came out after our rolls. The rolls were ok, but not like when Eric makes them. Eric was the main reason we come to the 23rd street location, he always makes the best sushi. After we ate my stomach started to hurt and we had to leave. My husband and I have had some pretty bad gastric distress after our dinner that has lasted until this morning. So please, be careful where you eat, and what you order. If anyone knows where Eric is, let us know!

I have been a patron of Yokohama for 7 years now, since I moved to town. Their speciality rolls are good. They have a huge variety and most I've had have been very delicious. These are not healthy treats (think massive amounts of spicy mayo and pan fried sushi), but it's the decadence that makes sushi palatable to a Midwesterner. Honestly, having lived briefly in Japan and eaten at small restaurants where they dice the living creature in front of you and you pay $300/head for belly not quite full, I far prefer this perversion of sushi over "real" sushi. However, there is great inconsistency in the fare at the 23rd street location. I have come to believe this is where they train new cooks before taking them downtown. I have eaten twice here in the past year when the food was all but ineligible. Yesterday, I had a miso soup that was salted to the point where my lips were puckering. Really that bad -- swimming in the ocean, brine taste in your mouth after a wave in the face and up the nose bad. The chicken teriyaki was a flatten breast piece covered in a mild sauce after cooking -- the sauce was on canned/bottled institutional food fare. Overall, .... What happened? Get a new manager. Fire the chef, something please!

I love coming here! I bring my non-sushi loving husband and my daughter here probably at least once every few weeks. Eric, the sushi chef, always treats us well and can always suggest a new thing for us to try. The ambiance is not great, but I recommend this Yokohama over the one off of Mass St. any time as the service is better. We love coming here and is a staple "go-to" place when we do not want to cook.

I came to Lawrence to see my sister and took her out to lunch, so she chose this place when I mentioned sushi, and I am a big fan. I eat a lot of sushi in Dallas, so I tend to be pretty critical of it, but I'm a small town girl at heart, so I feel pretty objective in saying this place is excellent. It doesn't make my top two, but that's a hard race to win. I would definitely eat here all the time- spots this well done make us city folks feel like we aren't missing out on good sushi if we move back out if the city :) thanks, little sushi spot, for boosting the pull of small towns!! Anyway, I've summarized my faves and criticism here: First off, the decor is awesome! Tasteful but fairly dramatic for a tiny spot, lots of textures as details, exactly what I love when I go to little cultural restaurants. Had the jayhawk roll, excellent large roll (I'm a sucker for cream cheese and spicy mayo- so healthy I know. This is a super fill-you-up craving roll. I'm eh on tempura, but it was overall very good and not overpowering in its richness. Can't remember our second roll, but it was my favorite and very delicious. Avacado and spicy mayo on top, spicy crab in the middle. Loved this roll. As a bonus, it was only $9 something, and it's nice to keep sushi reasonable- awesome that this cheaper one is so good! Had the nigiri mackerel, as I always do. I will say it wasn't as fresh as my favorite texture-wise, but it wasn't smelly or unfresh either, just a touch limp. I give these folks credit, I don't remember seeing an ocean or a giant fish market in a historical china town here so I'm completely happy with the quality and if order it again. We had miso. It was great. Good amount of seaweed leaves and other tastys in there. Couldn't tell if they have low sodium soy sauce, it came in mini carafes. It would be a nice addition for folks like me who use a lot. Thanks for doing such a great job!!

Truth known, I much prefer their downtown location, and the two share little in common other than... well, most Midwestern sushi joints are pretty similar. Most of them in Lawrence are Korean owned and operated and this one is no exception. The building is odd, believe years ago I remember it being either a gas station, convenience store or both. It was a bakery at one time. Still, location on 23rd makes it convenient for those that don't wish to battle downtown. Much quieter here. You can hear yourself talk while the downtown location on weekends has a bit of a sports bar & disco vibe, minus strobe lights. No complaints about the food, just not a very inviting venue. Best for lunch or when you just want this kind of cuisine and don't want to drive downtown or out west on 6th street to one of the other sushi locations.

I have NEVER had a bad roll from Yokohama, and I make an effort to try new rolls frequently. They have plenty of sweet rolls and spicy rolls. My personal favorite is the Orange Blossom with spicy sauce; it's the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. KU Roll is a close second. The staff is friendly too. Great place to get sushi.

I am a regular at Yokohama. I love this place. Love the fresh sashimi and the oriental style decoration. The thing is after Yokohama opened a new branch on Mass street. This old branch seems to be neglected. The food was so slow with only one sushi chef and one waiter at the time I was there (it's Saturday afternoon). We wait almost an hour to get our food. I wouldn't be updating this review if the quality of the sushi rolls was still the same. The sushi rolls don't look pretty at all. They were made in a hurry that affect the quality, which not rise up to usual Yokohama standard. The head Sushi chef is now working more at Yokohama on Mass. Maybe it's time to come back and train the sushi chef at the old place more.

i was impressed with the california rolls. i ordered them spicy and whatever they added to them to meet my needs tasted like heaven! the customer service was good, the pricing is fair and i was also impressed with the veggie tempura. something about fried cauliflower tickles my fancy

Sushi in the Midwest scares me. However, of all the sushi I've had (West Coast, East Coast, Vegas...) this is tops for me. It is consistently made with the best ingredients. I prefer the Yokohama on 23rd St. to the one down town any day. I think the atmosphere is more in line with some of my favorite sushi stops across the country. The service is always incredible and the prices are amazing. I never leave feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. If you can wait until 8:00 to go, the Happy Hour is well worth the wait.

Cosy, unique booths surround the outside with normal tables in the interior. The back room has a Sushi bar but we didn't visit that on this trip. This was an awesome place, by far the most affordable sushi I've ever eaten and to top it off it was TASTY, especially considering it was in the middle of Kansas (the oceanic capital of the world). The dinners are also very large and extremely reasonably priced. The selection of rolls is similar to what we've seen at other sushi places but they do have some originals and they're awesome. We were entertained by the couple on a blind date in the booth next to us. Although, we can't promise this great entertainment to everyone who visits.

I have eaten at many sushi places all over the world and this place is unique enough that I would recommend it to anyone. This is one of the most unique Sushi places you will ever eat at. Their specialty is the large variety of Rolls. They are fabulous and creative. You can even ask them to create one for you based on what you want. The prices are normal for sushi which is a bit on the expensive side. The sushi was very fresh and very good. They also have a variety of other foods to choose from, but you will end up ordering one of their unique rolls. If you are in Lawrence and want Sushi, this place is worth going to. Lawrence does have several other great sushi places, but this one is on the top of the list. It is a very small place so you need to be prepared to wait on Friday and Saturday night.

Out of the dozens and dozens of times I have been to this place, customer service gets worse and worse. It took over an hour to get our food. By the time the food came, it was cold, literally out of the refrigerator cold. The waiter was also missing three dishes, we waited 30 more minutes for it, but it never showed up. So we canceled it. When asked for the check, we were charged for the three dishes we never got and charged a gratuity fee for five people. When asked the waiter about the food, he said he gave it to us and that we did not remember. He also said that Yokohama Sushi always charged gratuity fee for five or more people, but the menu or the store does not state gratuity fee anywhere. Then the waiter went on saying that they were busy that is why we were charged a gratuity fee. There are 10 tables and 3 waitresses! Really? He couldn't even handle his third of the tables??? I will not return to this place again. Worst part is that not once did the waiter say he was sorry and blames everything on the customer. Lost a loyal customer.
