Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The bar for Mexican in Lawrence isn't very high, but Tres is an exception to the rule. They do some fine cooking here and in particular, I'm a huge fan of their fried tacos, not something that's real common in the area but not difficult to find if you venture south of the border. Those tacos are mouth watering, and a couple are enough. Crunchy with meaty juice and a little cheese and cilantro. Drizzle a bit of red sauce on it and you're in for some tasty chow. That's fine. But first: for starters the requisite chips and salsa. This is the kind of salsa I like. A bit thin, very fine chunks of onion and enough cilantro and heat that it stands up well with the crunchy chips. Their plates are thankfully devoid of the "let's melt crappy orange cheese all over everything to try to impress you" and instead opt for simplicity. Let the food speak for itself. Service is prompt and professional and there's a nice bar attached in case you want a cold beer or margarita. Not a particularly fancy joint and there's no pretense, no fuss. Just solid food. It's sort of a neighborhood bar on the way out of town on 10 hiway and there's plenty of parking. Not sure why I don't end up here more often. I think that needs to change.

The food here is really good! You must have the tacos, best in Lawrence! The jalapeño pork nachos, the pozole and menudo all fantastic!

Errrm, not so good. The wait staff was incredibly nice and helpful and prompt; sadly they only had mediocre food to serve. I got a combo plate. Enchilada sauce tasted canned, taco meat was uninspired, and my "chile cheese crisp" was the most bizarre incarnation of a chile relleno I've ever tasted. Beans were okay, but it's hard to screw those up. Though I thought that tacos were hard to screw up too; I suppose I learn something new every day.

Only been there few times but food and service have always been good. Had the carnitas fajitas and it was great. Good portions, good price.

The best Mexican I've had in Lawrence. Indeed, perhaps in my time in the Midwest. The food was incredibly flavorful, the food authentic, and the experience superb. My family (foodies in general) went for an evening in a search for some good Mexican. We were greeted with smiles, shown a menu and brought out some warm and tasty tortilla chips with salsa. By the time the waiter came back a new basket needed ordering. It was that good. And the food was brought out with little wait. We had the fish tacos (the sauce was a winner here, the fish strikingly fresh for a town like Lawrence) the carne asada (meat juicy and the rub excellent.) and the stuffed peppers (filling was running down my chin. So GOOD!) Can't recommend more highly for a more flavorful authentic Mexican food in Lawrence.

Food is authentic, prices are great and the service is generally the best to be had in town. I remember when this place first opened and I'm glad to see how its flourished because it deserves high praises. Great ownership, customer experience and if its your birthday, dont forget to try on the sombrero and get your picture on the wall, along with a free shot of tequila. (I started that tradition btw true story)

This place is average, the service was avarage as well the evening we went. No comparison to Jalapenos or Mi Ranchito..

This place is the place to go to for authentic Mexican art. Yes! Art the chef is a food artist. . Clean, simple, warm staff. You feel like home but with a delicious food options in front of you. The décor is moderate, the place is humble but has character. I had the soft taco beef, and chicken and the deep fried chicken taco, MAN! If you have not tried this out of this world fried taco you will go to your grave with regrets. Crunchy deep fried love in a taco. With no doubt I am bringing the family and letting my friends know about this place. tresmexicanoslawrence.com

This is an odd type place. The main dining room reminds me of a cafeteria. I have never been here unless it is dollar taco night on Tuesdays. Their specials on Tuesday are a can't miss so I highly recommend checking them out. Other than Tuesdays, however, this place under performs like most Mexican cuisines in this town.

One of the best Mexican restaurants in Lawrence (second to Tortas Jalisco), and margaritas are AWESOME! That's all I need to say about this place. :)

We LOVE Tres Mexicanos the guys working here always great us with a smile, and have our chips and salsa on the table before we can even sit down. The daily food and drink specials are amazing! Fransisco mixes the best margaritas in town, and they are only 99 cents on Monday and Wednesday. Yes 99 CENTS. We have tried almost everything on the menu and have not found anything we don't like yet. If you like super- spicy food, ask for the habanero sauce. Tres Mexicanos has become our favorite spot in town!

We go here frequently. The service is very good and our food is always ready quickly. The food is pretty authentic Mexican. This is not Taco Bell (thank goodness), so expect the real thing. I always get the tamale platter and love it. The salsa is the best in town.
(5)Hannah S.
The fish tacos are the best in town. Much better than La Parilla, for sure. They have excellent steak tacos and carnitas as well. Go on Taco Tuesday to get the best deals on tacos and run into local friends.

Waiter altered my cc receipt to add his own tip: Feb 2, 2011 4:24pm on Sat afternoon I was shopping in Lawrence and stopped to dine alone as I was leaving town. That late in the afternoon it was not busy in the least. My servers name, per my receipt Fransisc. I got such poor service I paid with my Visa debit card, lined through the tip line, and wrote the exact total in so it could not be altered. I did not leave a tip on the table. I placed the receipt in my purse; I always keep receipts. Days later I noticed a discrepancy in my checking account. Pulled out my receipt and sure enough waiter had added his own tip. I call restaurant to discuss this. I seem to be getting the run around when asked to speak with manager or owner. I'm given false names as well. They tell me owner will call me but he never does. After several phone calls to this restaurant I finally found one person who agreed it was wrong to alter customer receipts after the customer has signed and left the premises. They agree to reverse the total bill and offered me to come back for a free meal to show good faith. They also mentioned that waiter would no longer be working there. I felt this was fair and agreed if they were willing to make it right I would take no further action. HOWEVER -- I would not have written this review had they made it right. They have done nothing to make it right. I've not seen a reversal on my bank account. I have not gotten anything in the mail and no phone calls from the restaurant. NOTHING. I'm sure Fransisc is and will still work there in the future. When I think back at all the phone conversations, I realize how many excuses they gave for the reason the altercation happened in the first place. The bottom line is that a restaurant should not tolerate any kind of credit card tampering. Francisco can laugh because he got the tip out of me that he didn't deserve, but I believe in karma.

Debbi is 100% correct on her entire review of Tres Mexicanos, and Luis is also correct in that Tres Mexicanos is only second to Tortas Jalisco here in Lawrence. I only actually show up here for the $0.99 Margaritas on Mondays and Wednesdays, Mondays being preferred so that I can get a tasty chimichanga for half price (less than $4). The last time I was there, Louis made a friend and I some margaritas and included a tequila shot on the house, and I left TIPSY-- our ticket was LESS THAN $6. Never super busy, and has a tiny bar that I have never seen someone sit at, so you and a couple friends can take it over and have all the margs you want--as long as someone's sober enough to drive...

This is the best Mexican food in town without a doubt and cheap too. The carnitas nachos are amazing and incredible cheap!

Three words: half price chimichangas. I've been enjoying weekly Monday lunches with a group of friends at Tres Mexicanos for over a year. The attraction? Half price chimis on Mondays, meaning $3.75. The chimis aren't enormous, but they aren't small. They're a perfect portion in my opinion, though I tend to eat a little less during a meal than most people. Francisco the server is fantastic. He's our regular server, and after three visits he had everyone's order committed to memory. I love walking in and having a Dr. Pepper in front of me within two minutes, without having to say a word. On the rare occasion that one of our group changes their order, Francisco still gets it right. I honestly haven't tried anything else on the menu, but based on the chimis, I doubt you can go wrong. And there's endless chips and (good) salsa, of course. My only complaint- and it's not much of one- is they're a little slow to bring the ticket and change/credit card back. It's only an issue if you're on a strict lunch hour. If you're hanging out all afternoon on a day off to enjoy the super-cheap margaritas, which I also recommend (and may have done), it's not an issue. Highly recommended.

My husband, friends, and I all love this place! Everything I've had is delicious. The tacos are quite authentic and daily specials can't be beat. We tend to go on Tuesdays when hard shell tacos are $0.99, soft shell tacos are 4 for $5 and fish tacos are $1.99. Depending on the server, service can be hit or miss, but the food comes out quickly and won't disappoint. A great place to take friends or relatives from out of town, or co-workers for happy hour.

Great food for an affordable price. I love the Dos Equis Fish Tacos..needs a bit of spicy sauce for flavor, but they are truly excellent. My only real complaint is that the margaritas have recently declined in quality. They taste like pre mixed crap now with very little tequila, whereas they used to have great quality stuff. We actually asked about this disastrous change and the waiter said they were the same. Too bad...we'll still come here for cheap beer and yummy food.

Best real Mexican in town only rivaled by Tortas Jaliscos, but that is a totally different style of cooking. Food is great and they are the only ones in town with "al pastor" and few others that you can only find in KC restaurants. if they only had cabrito.....
(4)Miles S.
Both the steak and fish tacos are cheap and fantastic. On Tuesdays, it is easy to leave full, drunk, and satisfied for ~$10. The only problems are the noise and getting a table on Taco Tuesdays, especially when all of the students are in town.
(5)Eddie M.
Cheap and delicious margaritas, and the only place in town I've seen that bring out the tamales in their husks. No one I've talked to has had a bad experience here.

Crappy atmosphere, crappy food, crappy service. Anyone who thinks THIS is good Mexican food has lived a very sheltered life!
