Hands down the BEST pizza in Lawrence. I love their red wine sauce and their wheat crust is far superior to Wheat State. Also they have great specials on Monday and Wednesday! Since recently making the switch to eating mostly vegan, I discovered the Daiya cheese available here is delicious paired with the red sauce! Also a wide variety of veggie toppings are available compared to other pizza places - everything from kale to zucchini to broccoli. Seriously a must try if you're a college student on a budget or just want to eat the highest quality pizza in town.

The pizza kinda sucks. The crust lacked flavor and the cheese was just not right. Maybe I'm just used to eating good pizza and was taken by surprise with the kansas style pizza It might be your style but it definitely isn't mine. The employees were nice though.

Yeah this place is great. I enjoy the Pizza in the atmosphere caution if you are handicapped it's hard to get in and out of. My family and I have always enjoyed the pizza great place to go if you're in a hurry or with a large group.

Best pizza in lawerence! Been going here for years. Lots of selection. Excellent service. Fair prices. Would recommend to anyone!

I don't know how this was voted best pizza in Lawrence. It tasted like a refrigerated take and bake pizza you would buy at the grocery store. There are far better pizza restaurants in Lawrence, I recommend skipping on Rudy's.

Great pizza, great food all around. Love the atmosphere and the service. Great job Rudy's Pizzeria!

It's just not for me. I get that people love this place. For me , the crust is too thick, chewy , and bland. The cheese tries too hard, and the sauce wishes it were something else, like a wizard. Very friendly service. I hear I might like the calzone. I'll try that and possibly amend the review.

One of my favorite restaurants, let alone pizza restaurants, to go to. I'm a standard-pepperoni kind of chick, but my family always goes for the Mama Rudy, which is an equivalent of a veggie-lover's pizza. Regardless,t hese folks know how to make pizza. The sauce-topping-crust ratio is always consistently proportionate, and it's just an overall satisfying meal. I don't find a lot of grease on it, and if there is, it's just from the pepperoni. (As far as I know, I think that's just how pepperoni cooks?) You can also get individual slices if you're in a hurry--just keep in mind that they're in a little warmer, so they won't be as fresh as ordering a pizza. The atmosphere is super chill. The staff is super friendly; at one point I had been in there so often that one of the cashiers knew my order by heart. If you're new to Lawrence or just want a good pizza, give Rudy's a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Great atmosphere in a basement pizza parlor. I got the daily deal. Slice salad and a drink for 7 bucks!

They're pizza is pretty good. I had a small Papa Rudy's on wheat original crust because I'm a carnivore and Jeremy had a medium Za. They're sauce is sweeter than most but good and one of those meats was slightly spicy. The garlic bread stix are also very tasty.

Let me start by saying the pizza is actually ok. Not great but ok. It's good if you want the taste of pizza and a small salad and soda in a quick hurry for a descent price, however!!! I ordered delivery a couple months back & it included wings. Gave them specific directions to please make the wings somewhat crispy, when they arrived they were rubbery... Gross. So I took a hiatus for a couple months but my wife wanted to go for a quick dinner and I agreed tonight. Ordered a small taco pizza, wife got a quick slice w/a salad. We sat and she ate, we sat some more.... And some more.. Over an hour later my wife went and asked where the pizza was.. The girl didn't even turn in our order in! I swear I'll never eat there again solely because I think the customer service really kinda sucks. Sadly. Cuz we're huge supporters of local business!!!

Oh Rudy's, with your less-than-sober help and your ultra-Lawrence vibe. You just never go out of style. Your pizza isn't life-changing (in particular because the crust is just meh), but the sauce and selection of toppings are so yummy with your cheesy goodness! I can always count on you to have a wide ready-made selection of slices for instant gratification, and when I'm feeling picky and gourmet, I can get a custom-made pizza with your homemade pesto sauce instead of marinara. Mmmm! Thank you for being there for me all these years, Rudy's. I started coming to you when I was a student, and now I bring my kids to you!

Whatttttt is wrong with these helpers?! This is literally the best pizza I have ever had, it gets 5 stars for the quality and taste of the food....go now!

  • Antoinette H.

Not to shabby for thin crust pizza. Had the Rudy with wheat thin crust and it was pretty tasty. Sauce is made with red wine and the taste is pretty distinct in the Rudy.

Looking for a great Pie place has become a favorite past time for my wife and I. We were in Lawrence over the weekend and passed several places downtown. I guess the giant neon round sign was the ticket. Plus being in a basement with nothing fancy is even better. Not knowing where to order we sat down and then realized it was order from the counter style. No biggie. Nice selections. Got the Rudy something top of menu. Wife likes veggies and meat for me. Service is a little lacking in that they just stand there and blink. Long wait for pie, probably 45 min. But the K U game was about to start and phone was ringing off the wall for carry outs I assume. I liked the thin white crust and sauce was good as well. Got the large and was plenty with some for breakfast in the morning. Cons: You have to refill at the counter soda or water. They take your glass no soda machine and water is in pitchers. They had like a computer screen saver with clown fish on both TV's when we got there. Heard a employee say the game started in 5 min. So they changed it. Pizza was very good. Service from stocking hat wearing college kids not to great, but have had worse. Loose the Clown fish and will be back.

Pretty fair pizza at a great price. At just $7.75 for a large on Wednesday, you get tasty, hot food for cheap. Their sauce is good, their cheese isn't sparse, and their toppings seem fresh. While far from gourmet, it's difficult to complain about. The ambiance is a bit lacking and the staff is spacey, so there can a wait to get your order taken. But there is definitely a charm to the place that has me coming back. So, if you want to revisit your college days, or get a quick bite, Rudy's is a stop for you on Mass.

Delicious, SO many options. They deliver anywhere in Lawrence, FREE!!! And have the best cheesecake :) Plus all of the staff is SUPER friendly. Definitely worth a try, WAY better than any chain Pizza store by far.

Okay, after previously being unimpressed, I have fallen in love with the Cheezy. So good. The end.

When a place has a certain amount of hype, I tend be more harsh with my review, don't you? Sorry, Rudy's, I think you mean well, but you just don't do it for me. On a recent Saturday, we planned to get a few pizzas from Rudy's after a gallery opening we attended with friends and kids. "You should probably place the order an hour before we're ready to leave,' we were warned by our neighbor and an enthusiast of Rudy's. Wow. An *hour*? That pizza must be good, I thought, what with a fair amount of options in town and all. I mean, surely it must be better than Papa John's at least? But no, it wasn't. First of all, I am a stickler about how a pie is cut and I don't *do* tiny pizza squares. How else can I do the "Italian fold," hmm? The sauce tasted sweet and that is a huge no-no in my world. The crust was OK, nothing remarkable. Nothing horrible, and I suppose this is really a 2.5 star review, but between the wait and the hype and tiny squares and sweet sauce, well MEH! I suppose my standards are just too high for pizza parlours. I've been spoiled by the best in the world and when you're eating what amounts to not very healthy but oh so fattening food, it should be worth it and Rudy's ain't worth it, sorry.

Delicious pizza. The pocket za's are my favorite and are definitely affordable. I recommend eating in, rather than having it delivered. The restaurant has a cool, laid back atmosphere. The service is not the quickest, but the staff is very nice and friendly.

  • Joe L.

I had the Rudy's pizza delivered. The delivery time was fine, I had no problem with it. The toppings are great, those are worth four stars. The crust was bad though. It made the pizza taste like frozen pizza warmed up in the over. Two stars is "Meh. I've experienced better" which perfectly encompasses my feelings on this pizza. However, I've heard the calzones are much better. This rating could be bumped up when or if I try the calzones.

This is my favorite pizza place by far. The pizza is delicious and the atmosphere is awesome too. I eat Rudy's whenever I get that pizza craving. Try the tomato and pepperoni.

What I miss most about Kansas is the bread. There's no bread like it in Virginia, and why would there be? So it's no surprise that what makes Rudy's terrific is the chewy, tasty, substantial crust. The cheese and tomatoes are great too and everything, but the crust is unparalelled. These days, I usually eat Rudy's takeout in my parents' basement, watching a baseball game. It's a little difficult to just pick up - when the students are in town, one person has to circle around the 700 block of Mass street while the other runs and gets the order. But the staff is pretty friendly, and the orders are never wrong. I used to get slices there all the time when I lived in Lawrence; it's inexpensive and a fun, casual, unpretentious atmosphere. I love their little fish pond, too - I'm a sucker for indoor bodies of water. The booths are spacious and comfy. Going anywhere else for pizza in Lawrence is basically a crime. Rudy's blows any chain out of the water, every time.

Yummy Yummy! Pizza is so good! Crust is thin and crispy. Their za's are awesome too. I love the place too, downtown, in the basement...just a quaint little place w/ good pizza.

I've had pizza from NY to Rome...and for me, this is the greatest pizza in the world. You can't beat the downlown Lawrence location, in the basement of an old historic building. The crowd is extremely diverse, a lot of locals mixed with a bunch of college kids. The ambience is warm and cozy and the music is alwasy eclectic. The sauce is phenomental, the crust is always fresh, and the selection of toppings is huge (but manageable). Go on Wednesdays for some crazy deals and try the brownies with peanut butter cups (if they aren't sold out).

    (5)
  • Cary P.

Terrible! Crust was awful. Couldn't even finish 2 pieces.

    (1)
  • Cory D.

Any pizza place that sells by the slice gets at least 3 stars unless the product is just rancid. Rudy's pizza is, in fact, good (though there's both better quality and better value available), the other stuff is neither bad nor remarkable and the ambiance, location, setup, etc. all balance out to a good, solid, average score. P.S. A few bonus points granted for the excellent crushed ice they use.

    (3)
  • Skyler C.

The pizza is great, even the super-cheap hour-old slices. The staff is friendly in a non-pushy, casual way which is refreshing. The topping options are diverse and the atmosphere is great. I have been to most of the local pizza places, and I have to say this one is the best. (Papa Keno's used to be the greatest pizza anywhere but they completely changed their pizza and its not nearly as good now.)

  • Brian M.

I think Eric J.G. is spot on here, pizza is good, some nice flavors but nothing to drive well out of my way to grab. I hit it up for the first time tonight and was happy to see that unlike Joi B's experience my pie was "properly" sliced. I did like the tastes generated by the herbs they added-reminded me a little of the spring water dough of Mellow Mushroom back in the ATL, though not quite as unique or as good. To bottom line it for you-dont avoid Rudy's, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way for it.

    (3)
  • Sarah K.

My 7 year old cousin says it's the best pizza in Lawrence. Maybe he's right, I haven't had any other pizza in Lawrence, but I know I've had much better pizza. The place is super cute, and the service is quick. Not too big of a slice selection, but i was ok with that.

    (3)
  • Eric J G.

Rudy's is a place I stop in every so often for lunch and my experience is always the same: unique atmosphere, decent pizza and they have a nice lunch special that includes a salad and drink. The pizza is good - it's just fine for grabbing a slice on a lunch break. But, it's not phenomenal. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give Rudy's a try. It's still worth the money as the slices are a nice size. The only thing I find truly annoying about Rudy's is they charge you for drink refills. The drink cups aren't that big and after a big slice of pizza you'll end up needing more to drink.

  • Jason W.

Very good pizza and reasonably priced... This is my # 2 choice for Pizza in Lawrence.

  • Jamie B.

I remember when Rudy's was up next to where the Glass Onion was [it was on top of Yello Sub] at the end of campus...and the bar there, I can't remember the name... Excellent pizza, the place was always warm and smelled great and my vegan friends could eat too and everyone was happy. There is one in Bellingham, WA, too, opened by the original owners. I once considered moving there and going to work at it. Just thinking about it now is making me drool...Pocket Za with spinach and garlic and extra cheese or just a big slice of cheese....and the .357 Special!

  • Jacob B.

I am a big fan of Rudy's, I will not lie. I know I make a big deal about the role of crust in a pizza, and how a crust should be the feature, and Rudy's crust is nothing over the top amazing. What merits the three stars? What is it that keeps bringing me back? Their toppings. I simply cannot give them two stars when I take into account the variety of their toppings. This is the case of a pizza place having a crust worthy of transporting toppings to my mouth. I love meat on my pizza, but I'm an even bigger fan of vegetation on my pizza. When I roll into Rudy's, I never know what is going to be on their veggie pizza because it changes up based on what is in season and available. Yesterday it was broccoli, zucchini and red peppers, all of which had been sauteed in garlic prior to getting put on the pizza. The week prior to that I went in and had a slice with spinach, tomato slices and onion. To top it off they hit it with their own mozzarella and provolone blend which melts nicely compared to places that blend cheddar or other harder cheeses into their toppings which can brown and crisp. If you are ordering carry out or delivery, prepare to wait. They have ridiculous wait times. I no longer order from Rudy's, I walk in and buy it by the slice. It is really the only way to eat at Rudy's. Rudy's is the exception to "the crust is law"--and only because of their wide selection of incredibly tasty, incredibly fresh toppings. If you are a topping-centric pizza eater, you will enjoy Rudy's. If you prefer a crust to die for--or a quicker delivery--there are certainly better pies in town.

Good pizza with fun toppings and i prefer to support these guys over the tax-evading, employee abusing Keno's down the road. One note... It may be common sense, but you might want to get a whole pizza and split it or box the leftovers instead of buying by the slice. When i've gotten slices in the past they often taste like they've been sitting under the heat lamp a little too long. Also! I love that this place is in a downstairs location. The space just screams pizza parlor to me. Wonderful.

  • Corey W.

My opinion must be acknowledge here as I'm one of the few people in the world who has eaten and reviewed the two Rudy's Pizzerias. If you are in a hurry get a salad and a slice to go. It's cheap and tasty. They do deliver, but I prefer eating a pizza there or going to pick it up. The crust is best when it's right out of the oven. Nice little place with great music usually playing in the background. I'm always happy with the employees selections. Yes, Bellingham, Washington has one started by a couple of KU grads that worked at the Lawrence store. I was amazed when I saw the "Sun" symbol and Rudy's Pizzeria sign as I traveled through downtown Bellingham. Good times.

I cannot honestly understand why this is rated the #1 pizza restaurants in Lawrence. The crust taste prefabricated (similar to pizza hut), the sauce is way to sweet and the cheese is noting special. The only thing positive I can say is that the toppings are piled on and seem very fresh. Again definitely NOT the best pizza in Lawrence (that goes to Pyramid, Gumbies, or Papa Keno's).

  • Sara Z.

I love this place and their fabulous pizza! I lived in Lawrence for seven years, and Rudy's was an unsung hero for me. Rudy's is one of those places that was always in the background, and always a great place for a slice or a pizza to share with everyone...because EVERYONE in town was my friend. Ok, that's a lie. But I wish it were true. Anyways. It's funny, because I never really realized until now that Rudy's was one of those places I visited often, but never thought about. Like an old friend you take for granted...and walk past constantly on Mass St. Geez, some friend I am. No wonder everyone in Lawrence wasn't my friend. I'm sorry Rudy's! But when I did decide to descend the stairs into the tiny but cozy space, I was never disappointed. My tastes were across the board here, but I usually ordered some fabulous spinach garlic thing or a veggie-type slice, always on the wheat crust. And as I savored every last, non-greasy bit of that slice (or more if I was feeling piggy that day), I knew that it was just what I needed. The decor is cool, and I especially love the wall with the bricks and foundation that you can see. If I was lucky, I could get the table in the funky alcove which had fabulous acoustics and made me feel like I was in a church or something. The Church of Amazing Pizza maybe! I loved the lighting and the staff were always so friendly. Next time I'm in Lawrence, a trip to Rudy's is definitely in order!

I think of this place and I think of a place that is conflicted. By conflicted I am talking about the strangely unique good way. My buddies and I walked down the stairs into this pizzaria and instantly noticable on the wall was a dragon and a water work with some koi in them. We went to the front counter to order our pizza and the help was very friendly. She offered us a special after we had some difficulty deciding and it ended up working out for the group. Then we got the final product. We ordered a Rudy's which is somewhat like a supreme from pizza hut and a beef and cheese thin. The crust was crisp and tasty on both accounts. The sauce was slightly rich on the garlic, but I like garlic, so in this case it was a plus. Lastly, I was impressed at the focus of the employees. I used to manage a pizza place. When someone got up and left, someone was out very quickly to clean the table. This ensured that the restaurant had a great appearance and didn't feel like the roach motel that some college town pizzaria's feel like.

THIN WHEAT CRUST pizzas are the way to go. Love the extensive topping options - more than 40 & including many not so run-of-the-mill choices like almonds, cashews, walnuts (nuts for nuts), sunflower seeds, avocado (wacky!), broccoli (er?), steak (whoa) + extra points for having soy cheese (not my thang but great option for the vegans). As a hot-n-spicy lover I like a place that offers banana peppers, pepperoncini &/or jalapenos. The sauce - swoon! Zesty red wine top secret recipe sauce packed with flavor. Extra sauce please for me to spread on top. Appreciate the shaker toppings too: herb parm, garlic powder 'n more. Friendly service & good music while you wait for your pie. Rudy's is laid back & tasty. Good stuff.

All throughout my college days I was faithful only to Rudy's. It is the philosopher king of all pizzas, the spot of wine sauce in my otherwise cold cold soul. Even to this day, all pizzas must be compared along side it, and found lacking. When I return to my flyover-state home, I always make the hajj to Rudy's.

  • Shannon C.

Ugh, how can someone even THINK to put Rudy's and Papa Keno's in the same category ?! Papa Keno's is NOT pizza; it's hardly food. Rudy's is what all good pizza should taste like. I miss it so much, I've contemplated moving back to KS just to get some of that goodness. I was seriously down to my last dollar one day, and had to decide between paying my rent on time, and getting a slice at Rudy's. I chose the latter, and I don't regret it at all.

  • Joe W.

Some people love this place, so take this review with a grain of salt. I just don't care much for Rudy's I think it might be the dry herbs they put on the pizza. Cool location. Check it out for yourself!

  • Andrew L.

For the partner in crime and myself, Rudy's had become a sort of tradition. The pizza is fantastic and they have toppings for every taste. Our preferred combination is a large original wheat crust with black olives, artichokes, sausage, sliced tomato, and mushrooms. There is also a specialty bearing my name that is quite tasty as well. (The Andy). Getting a seat on busy nights will require some strategy as you seat yourself. The atmosphere is relaxed and the basement location feels like an urban pizza bunker. Some of the walls are actually the old stone foundation of the building and it's really neat to look at the hand laid stones. They don't make them like they used to!!!

    (4)
  • J C.

I totally, totally adore Rudy's pizza, but it's not a lot of people's thing. My blind love has led me to take tons of out-of-towners here and their reactions have been across the board. Rudy's is distinctive -- there's nothing like it. The crust is kind of dry, as someone said before -- not in a bad way though. It's just not oozing with grease... almost more like a good crusty bread. And the sauce is definitely sweet, which I love. My heart hurts too much from a year plus of separation to go into much more detail, but basically, if you live in Lawrence, you have to try it. More than a few people are head-over-heels in love... and it's always consistent, so if you like what you taste, you don't have to worry about what it will be like next time.

  • Quinn G.

They just don't have pizza like this in California. Instead of sweet, red-wine sauce, California style is no sauce. Which I say makes it a cheese toast. Not bad, but not pizza. Lawrence is full, full of great pizza, but Rudy's is my favorite. Thanks Rudy's, for ruining me forever (sigh). Please just keep on doing what you're doing, and pay no attention to those communist californians who hate sauce.

    (5)
  • D S.

They just got a gluten-free crust that is absolutely awesome and rivals their original crust. It's only available in small right now, but I can live with it. As always, Rudy's is THE best pizza in town.

    (5)
  • Rush G.

Good slice of pizza in a unique, downstairs building. They do deliver but half the fun is strolling down Mass and grabbing a slice or two. I always like to get a Veggie pizza, but it's not always available by the slice.

    (4)
  • Emily K.

Great pizza, but they smoke so much weed, I recommend not expecting them to get your order correct. It's definitely the best spot on Mass street to walk in and grab a slice, but ordering delivery can be a gamble.

  • Corey O.

My three favorite pizza places in Lawrence: Rudy's, Papa Ken's and Wheat State. Rudy's is the the college town pizza. Simple sweet sauce with a small toss of herbs. I recommend it as my 2nd favorite pizza in Lawrence.

    (4)
  • Lisa C.

Oh Rudy's! I miss it so much since I moved to California. I've never had a cheese pizza as amazing as theirs. I dream about it at night. I don't even consider it pizza, really, because it's too cruel to hold other pizzerias up to their standards. They can never compare.

    (5)
  • Michael W.

I know Rudy's is an institution in Lawrence's pizza world, but I just didn't feel it. Maybe it's a case of high expectations. My friends love this place. I think their tomato sauce is sweet, which is an odd flavor to associate with pizza. I haven't gone back, so maybe it was a one-time thing. But honestly, I'd rather have delivery from Papa John's.

  • Karl A.

I've tried all the pizza in Lawrence, and this place is the best. I've been eating here for years.

In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large.
