As a member of the brown cohort, or as I comically call it the "brown brigade", I have had foods from many regions of India, primarily western India. Having said that, Shaukin does a finger-lickin' good job at Indian food. The prices are reasonable for the quality that they present. The selection is wide enough to appeal to even the most incompetent of Indian cuisine. In addition, the atmosphere they cultivate is definitely chill and full of memorable idiosyncrasies. I really suggest coming back and ordering more options from the menu to those not well-versed in Indian cuisine to get a more full picture of this gem of an establishment.

Really good INDIAN food - owner caters to your spice level very nice food Overpriced if you eat couple dishes of fast food it will cost about $25 per person - thats expensive They need to put a exhaust fan - once you are out of there you smell garlic, onion and spices from your clothes - Please put a EXHAUST FAN or a air purifier if you have to go there from Office in lunch break or if before a meeting than you will smell like chicken curry For FOOD - FIVE STAR i will take a STAR away just for The owner is very kind and tries to accomodate all needs for his customers

Very good Indian street food. Glad to have this restaurant in town.

Great place to get Indian food! The service was incredibly fast and it is definitely the best priced Indian food around. For under $20 you can have enough food for two people. That is about half the price of a comparable meal at any other establishment. Highly recommend this place!

Best Indian food at west Lafayette. Price can be reduced..... Considering most of the dinners are students.

Shaukin is solid. The owner is delightful, the tea has just the right amount of cardamom, and the food is consistently tasty. You may need to venture into the specials to find curries beyond the more snackish street food and really explore the diversity of flavors. We're big fans of the veg mini meal and thaala (on the weekends). Only four stars because the hours are subject to change on a given day and we have shown up more than once to find out that the hours had changed and they were not open. Always best to call ahead.

With the restaurant moving closer to campus & expanding in size & menu there is no denying that they offer the best Indian cuisine on Purdue campus. A must visit place for all food enthusiasts. Do try their Papdi Chaat & Samosa! Love them. And even though the portions are relatively small in size, so is the cost. You can easily order two menu items for the same or lesser cost of a dinner than eating at a full entree place.

Shaukin's definitely the best place to get Indian food around campus. When I was at Purdue, my buddies and I would usually come here twice or thrice a week! PROS : (i) It's authentic (unlike many Indian restaurants which seldom please my taste buds that trained for good Indian food) The food is extremely tasty. The Chaats are heavenly and the platter/meals are very palatable - freshly prepared, not too oily, not too spicy. Just perfect! (ii) The owners are really friendly and nice. CONS : I don't have anything bad to say about this place, except some items on the menu are tad overpriced. And yeah, this place doesn't have much seating. And it has plastic benches and chairs. So if you are looking for a classy ambience, then this is not the place. But if you are looking for good, hygenic and tasty food, Shaukin is the place to go!

My husband and I were in the mood for Indian food so I looked to my trusty Yelp app and found this place. When we arrived there were no other customers in the place but this is a college town and it was Spring Break. I'm glad there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant because I wanted some alone time with my curry chicken. The curry chicken is the most popular and I could taste why. This place knows what they're doing. My only complaint is after we finished I'm assuming the owner let us know the next time ask him for the garlic naan he'd be happy to give it to us. I wish he would have said that before we started eating because we're from out of town and won't have a next time :'( Delicious place when you have an Indian food craving.

This is definitely the most authentic international food in West Lafayette. What a gem! They have a nice curry, but really shine with their other unique (to the States) dishes. The Chole Puri was tasty, and the Manchurian Idli, rice bread fried to crispy chewy deliciousness, was different, and fantastic. The owner is friendly and helpful, and the location clean and simple.

Among the 2 best Indian restaurants in the Lafayette/W Laf, IN area. 1. Sharma's Kitchen. 2. Shaukin. The food here is authentic and it is made slightly spicy ( which is how Indian food should be served). My favorite is their Chicken curry- so good with rice. I personally dislike their naan as its not crispy but would go for Puri. The owner of this restaurant is such a nice man and tries to accommodate our every need. Will be back as usual. Tip: Try the weekend thali sets ( 13.90 with tax)

Best Indian food in town and in many cases better than most places I've eaten in other cities. Owners are very nice and welcoming. This is some authentic Indian food that is hard to find. Best things to try: 1. Frankie - paneer or chicken 2. Vada Pav 3. Curry Chicken 4. Dosa 5. Finish with a good Indian dessert

I got mine thru hungry boiler. Portions were very small for the amount I spent and it was mostly sauce with a little bit of chicken. The curry chicken was okay but not as spicy as I would have liked. The chilli chicken was spicy but not as tasty. I def won't be ordering again, just wasn't my cup of tea.

Tasty tasty tasty! Not sure if you'll like Indian food? Get the chicken curry here as an intro, with naan flat bread. Or, instead of chicken, get the "paneer" curry... I actually like this one better! (Paneer is a kind of homemade cheese... think a very firm ricotta.) Or get a weekend thali set so you can try lots of new items and flavors. We hit the lottery and were there for a special, so got a treat of dosa (?) with our thali! Dosa was sort of a crepish, waferish bread-tent. We dipped it in everything (including our dessert...) I quite liked the owner - Very kind, he opened shop early to let us in Sat morning when he saw us huddled out in the cold. We'll be back! Oh, and friends loved the Indian coffee!

Back in West Lafayette and after a disappointing Indian experience the night before, we decided to give this place a try. Everything was great and the service was fast! I highly recommend the Papdi Chaat, Frankie or Chicken curry. The only thing I didn't like was the Chole - the recipe could use improvement! I also though the Samosa's 2 for $4.49 are overpriced!

Best Indian food, with the most friendly informative owners. It seemed that no sooner than we had put in our order, there it was right in front of us to savor and enjoy. All the food was delicious and served sweetly with a smile. The owner happily described every item's ingredients and flavors. They could be spiced up or down. Loved the different textures and colors. Soooo delicious! We will be regular customers.

Nice addition to Purdue/Lafayette. Most of the food is reasonably priced, and yummy. My favorites are samosa chat, and Falooda. While it is easy to find plenty of typical Indian restaurants, this place offers unique snack items that aren't as commonly available. Unique food + taste + nice people = 5 stars!

  • Varna S.

Very good for a quick bite to eat. We had the samosa chaat, chhole tikki, batata vada and puri channa. The samosa chaat had too much yogurt and chutney and was almost like a soup which made for pretty soggy food. Other than that, overall everything was good and tasty! The portions were a lot larger than expected but it was also a bit expensive for chaat which technically is a snack/street food. The restaurant is fairly small and we chose to sit next to the kitchen door. The only complaint is that the smoke from the oil in the kitchen was filling the small restaurant and my eyes started burning and watering. It was NOT a comfortable experience. When we left, the oil and masala smell also stuck to our clothes. I think the place just needs a better ventilation system. That being said, I do plan on returning and trying something else. Maybe taking it to-go next time

  • Dia D.

I like this place because they have food that is different from the other Indian restaurants in town. It is a casual place where you eat on styrofoam plates. The food is spicy and inexpensive. Two samosas for $2.99, chaat platter for $5.99, and a Frankie for 3.99. Many vegetarian friendly items.

I LOVE Shaukin. I shouldn't even compare it to the other Indian restaurants in town since the food is so different (and it's not buffet style) but it's really my favorite Indian restaurant in the zone (Sharma's Kitchen being the second). Unlike the other Indian restaurants you don't have to feel guilty after eating here (both money and amounts of food consumed). Some of the items are really cheap and thus small and "snack like". The chicken curry is deliiiiiiiicious. The non-veg meal is my current favorite (comes with the chicken curry, soup, rice puffs, yogurt, chilies.) They usually have specials written out on a little blackboard by the side of the menu (like different types of dosas, or fresh watermelon juice which I usually get when they have it). Anyway. If you haven't tried it yet because you're not sure you'll like it just give it a shot. Get something cheap in the menu, see if you like it (like the papdi chaat). On a side note, my friend just moved to India and said this place is legit :)

I had the non-veggie (chicken curry) meal. Very good!!! My first time trying Indian food. I'll be back again!!!

I get it, Purdue cherishes the fact that there's an affordable chaat place around campus, but that's not enough to redeem this place. Firstly, I ordered the samosa chaat with emphasis on "very little yogurt". What I received, however, was a very unsatisfactory product. I might as well have ordered yogurt in a bowl with a a touch of samosa and chole. I also ordered a paneer frankie - which is essentially a malaysian paratha wrapped around a few pieces of stir-fried paneer. This wasn't bad but it showed me how inconsistent they are. My friend, who ordered the same thing clearly had way more paneer in his wrap than I had in mine. I'm a strong believer that customer service makes or breaks a restaurant - Shaukin has miles to go before finding its true potential.

    1. The coconut chutney was great. I have visited several indian restaurants in the US and I never had fresh coconut chutney until I visited Shaukin 2. I went to Shaukin twice and ordered different foods. Each time, the food was good. 3. Mr. Bhat, the owner, was very courteous and polite. I felt that we were guests at his house. Next time, I am in W. Lafayatte, I will definitely visit Shaukin.

If you're craving some chaat one evening thinking about your favorite chaat place on the street back home, Shaukin will try (read inflection on "try") not to disappoint you. You definitely won't be dissatisfied, but I'm sure you've had better.

Really nice owners. Really good food! The serving side is very generous and the price is good. The dish I usually get is $6.41 after tax, and if you take home the leftovers it is enough for a second or third meal. They are in the same building with the Silver Dipper, at the corner of River & State. Be careful crossing River Road if you are walking here from campus, as it is a very busy highway. If you drive, they do have ample parking in front.

  • Margy D.

Love, love, love this place!! So happy they moved and are on my way home. My favorites are the curry paneer and aloo frankie. The owners are super sweet and recognize you after you stop in a couple times. Perfer this place over the typical buffet Indian restaurants.

This is one of the best Indian fastfood places you can find in miles of Purdue. Driving to this place (which is quite far from the the center of the town) is about 15 mins, but the food is totally worth it. It tastes a lot like home cooked food (for Indians). I've tried all of the items and I love them. Favourites are Vada Pav and Dahi Papdi Chaat. They also serve tiffen for lunch times and deliver free to campus. Call them and try this out atleast once!

    (5)
  • Shriphani P.

I sometimes get the lunches they have. The food is very simple and filling and will provide you a balanced diet. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for simple Indian food.

Tiny restaurant, amazing food. It's ready quickly, so even though there's nowhere to sit, the food is still tasty and warm when you get it home. Inexpensive, and the best thing... is everything... And all staff members who work at Shaukin are excellent as well. :)

Could turn me vegetarian. Really. Regret not giving this place a chance earlier based on its appearance and the "fast food" on the sign. (it is not!) Better than Khana Kazana though less choices are available. Awesome food. Everything I tasted I either liked or loved. Especially the special, Mutter (pea) Paneer (cottage cheese like thing). They use fresh peas which are a lot more expensive than frozen and you can definitely taste the difference. Anyone who dislikes peas has never had fresh ones (give peas a chance). OH they BURST in your mouth with sweetness! And they are not stingy with the stuff either, lots and LOTS of peas. I was so mad when my boyfriend ate my leftovers (we ordered for 3 people to try as much food as possible) #19 Paneer Curry was good too, not as spicy and pea-y but good. Their garlic naan is sooo fresh. They use actual pieces of garlic and none of that flavoring rubbish. OOhhh so soft and chewy.... Excellent service. I was not sure what to get as my bf's friend was the one that recommended this place to us. The manager was extremely happy with helping us order food and making recommendations. He even gave us a free full size sample (6-8oz container) of garbanzo curry thingy as it was our first time and seemed to have fun watching us enjoy his culture's food so much. He takes GREAT PRIDE in his food, I can tell by the quality of the food and the way he talked about it. I will definitely be coming back for more. This time I will save room for dessert.

For 'fast food' in the U.S., it's quite difficult to judge the meals served at Shaukin poorly. Unlike the prototypical Indian buffet where the food is lukewarm at best, the meals here are served so piping hot that when you dip your bread and fingers into the pav bhaji, you burn them. My recommendations are as follows, and when I say recommendations, I really mean that they are *must* tries: the vada pav, idli sambar, and pav bhaji. A word of warning to those who have little spice tolerance, I would avoid the vada pav. You might cry from the glorious pain that it creates. I've tried other selections from the menu, but nothing else had the same appeal as the above. The dahi puri is good, but every time it is much too garlicky. I don't really mind, but if you take a date there, I advise you not to order it. The restaurant itself is simple, its seating consisting of lawn furniture and its wall decor of students professing their undying love to Shaukin. The service is quick, and the behind-the-scene miracle workers are very kind. Taken from the perspective of someone who's been to India (but is not native), this is the closest you'll get to authentic Indian food in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area.

Food is decent, but very overpriced. When you compare the price to food quality its not worth it.

  • Dee O.

I was not a fan. The concept fast Indian food but it meant all the food was precooked. The rice was a little too soggy and my dish lacked spices. Judging from the other reviews, I probably just had an isolated bad experience but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go back. The owner was great though. he was very nice and helped me decide on what I eventually got.

MMMMM CHAAT! If you decided you wanted to eat fast food every day, I'd pick this place over McDonald's each time! I love how it's a tucked away hole in the wall but how it's a super clean, friendly, and organized hole in the wall. I've been there twice now and I definitely recommend getting the entire CHAAT PLATTER so you can get a taste of everything. Of course, anything drenched in yogurt, chutney, tamarind with a little bit of crunch has got to be good. The two best chaats I've had: DAHI BATATA PURI and SAMOSA CHAAT. FRANKIES are popular but for something different I'd go for the GRILLED BOMBAY SANDWICH or the VADA PAV. And my most favorite part of all~~~SWEET LASSI! A bit pricey at $2 but I would drown myself in it if I could. Advice: it's kind of a long wait; order from the car. there's not many places to sit; be prepared in winter to eat it in your car if you have to. don't try getting full off this place if you're going for dinner or you might just keep ordering and ordering! it's good for a snack; remember, it's "indian fast food".

Time for a review update - since my last writing, shaukin has moved to River Road, a much better location, and the menu has changed quite a bit. The good: The food is so tasty! The menu is full of mostly smallish items and a few platters. My main go-to is the paneer frankie, something like the Indian version of a burrito - chunks of cheese and veg wrapped in a paratha. They do frankies with chicken and potato too. As a fat american, I sometimes find that just one item isn't enough so I sometimes grab a second like a vada pav too. It's a spicy fried potato patty on a bun. There's a lot to choose from, and everything I've tried here has been great. Prices for a single item are pretty good. It's not exactly cheap, but it's on par with other restaurants in the area. The bad: the operations and logistics of this place need some help. The biggest problem is that the hours of operation are constantly changing. Right now the restaurant doesn't open until 5:30p. It's a real shame because this seems like much more of a lunch place to me than dinner. It also takes a while for them to cook the food. At peak times (especially when the store doesn't open until the peak of the dinner rush) it gets really busy and you have to stand outside to wait for your food to be made. My guess as to the reasoning to all this is that the store owner has problems delegating - he's the only one I've ever seen cooking. Maybe it's time to hire someone else so the store can be open reasonable times?

The food is good and the menu has more to offer than typical Indian restaurants. However, the prices are on the expensive side especially considering that you need to order at least a couple of items to make a meal.

I've been to fantastic formal Indian restaurants in Chicago and Indianapolis, and this place is almost just as good. Great portion sizes, the curry has wonderful flavor, and the Indian bread is delicious. This will definitely become a regular spot for me

I love Indian food, and Shaukin knows how to make it right. It's different fare than what you'll find at the other Indian restaurants in town, because it's Indian fast-food. My favorites are the Frankie's - very delicious. The proprietors are always friendly and smiling, and even though this place is a bit out of the way, I try to stop in whenever I'm on that side of town.

    (5)
  • Ng T.

They call this Indian street food. So they are not the food that I usually get from other Indian restaurants. Anayway I had Frankie's -- tasty.
