Tomato Bar Pizza Bakery Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Tomato bar is a low quality pizza place with poor service asking too much money for what their giving. I was not pleased with my visit there last night and was disappointed with my lazy server for bringing me burnt food. Not to mention the bathrooms looked like they haven't been cleaned in weeks! I would not go here.

Great pizza!. Love the crust and definitely a place to visit again. Great for kids and service was great!

Tomato Bar in Valpo has great pizza, salad and excellent beers! I recommend creating your own salad and pizza. Mandy was a sweetheart!

I happened to be in Valpo and wanted a local staple. I figured the popular pizza place right by the college campus would be a good spot. I'm glad I tried it, I feel like I have a better sense of Valpo, but it was totally average smalltown pizza. The drive-through is convenient. There's no sign, it's literally the little window in the middle of the wall to the right of the restaurant as you look at it from outside. It's fast food, but not pizza hut. I called without having a menu to look at (having one on Yelp would be great). I asked if they had a Margherita and they didn't, which isn't a great sign imo (a Margherita is my pizza place yardstick). They had a regular cheese, but I figured I should do something more interesting, so I went with meatball. It was verrryyy greasy. It was nice and piping hot. I like a NY slice, and this was a typical small town kind of place, not thin crust, but not thick. But I wish it'd had more flavor; it didn't have much, and they didn't give me any packets of spices or anything.

I went here with my mom and sister on a whim one day for lunch while out in Valpo (I'm from CP) - let's just say I was so impressed I returned and this time with a group of ten. Their "donuts" are my favorite menu item. Genius. Everyone knows the best part of the pizza is the crust... and what do they do? Make an appetizer of just pizza crust in round donut shapes. The first time I visited I ordered a salad to eat alongside pizza (can't recall which one) but it was just as delicious as the pizza. They don't take reservations, but on a crowded Sunday night, they sat my group of ten within 20 minutes and the service was excellent. This is the kind of pizza place NWI needs. It's like Chicago is only 25 minutes from me.

I love going to this restaurant. Their specialty pizzas are the bomb! They also have craft beer and local ice cream. I've taken my family here quite a few times. It's good for just sitting at the bar or with a big group. I've never had a bad experience. It is popular though so sometimes the wait can be long, but it's worth it!

I'll start out with- I am not a pizza person. I really would never eat pizza if it were up to me. With that being said- I love coming here with my friends! Everybody can get what they want. They have the most amazing sandwiches! I am a meat eater but I love the portobello sandwich. I also LOVE the hulk salad- that's what I usually get and its so filling and healthy with very fresh ingredients. I've also tried a few pizzas and honestly, they've all been amazing. My favorite is the good ole boy. It has jalapeños and pineapple on it which is spicy, sweet and unique in flavors. The service is always amazing here and even when I just get pick up, they are still nice and attentive!

Great food, great atmosphere! Plates are big, with three people we had a small order of dough nuts, a large salad and medium pizza, two beers and we still took half the pizza home! All that and still came out under $40! Shirts are for sale, they have some cool ones; the bartender is the artist, need to add Valprasio , IN to the design. Last but not least, the service is great, there must be a "cute girl waitress" standard at this place, plus they were all great. Ashley was our server, thanks again, great time and service! WILL BE BACK!!

I've been here handfuls of times, and I'm never disappointed! The staff is always pretty nice, and I really like the decor and the overall atmosphere. We always get the Doughnuts as an appetizer, and they're delicious every time! They're basically just breadsticks buttered with parm, but in a delicious circle form. And I have to say, I've never had a bad pizza from here. I love pizza, and I do love this pizza. My boyfriend loves the calzones, he fights me to order one every time. :) definitely recommend this place.

So, I've heard people talking about this place for a while, and thought I'd check it out. Short summary is that it wasn't good. It's like a warmed over California Pizza Kitchen for NWI ("you can pick your own toppings at the table? How innovative!") First and foremost, the name Tomato Bar doesn't fit their sauce, as it doesn't taste of tomato at all. I haven't had a more bland sauce on a pizza, and I've eaten pizza at Boston's. The crust was perfectly cooked, but again, not a speck of flavor to be had. The mushroom mix they used was above average. Wait staff was nice, and the service was quick. They have a bunch of craft beers, but at this point, who doesn't? I'm not giving stars for that. For the price and quality of food, I'd venture elsewhere next time.

Love that they offer GF options. My go-to is the BLTA w/ GF bread and vegan cheese. In. Love. Order every time I'm in town. Friendly staff, too. Cool atmosphere and seating. Dimly lit which I like in a restaurant. Great location. Great name.

Fantastic food coupled with friendly staff and nice venue! Wish we weren't just visiting the area because this place is special! Doughnuts are served with great marinara but they are huge so don't fill up- hard to resist because they really showcase the perfect crust! We tried the blanco pizza and a custom spicy combo pizza along with the meatball sandwich. Everything was awesome! There were probably 30 beers on tap- really nice selection!

Great pizza, great beer. Good food, worth the wait sometimes, and the build your own pizza ingredients are killer.

  • Stephanie R.

Really great pizza. The crust has a nice chewiness to it. The salads are really fresh and generously portioned. They also have a nice beer list. We had great service and will be back again.

Really great. Best pizza in town, and I think the salads and sandwiches are better. Always busy, so plan ahead, or just get it to go. The bar stuff is knowledgeable and helpful.

worst service EVER, dine in or carry out!!! Lost our carryout order twice!!! First time was understandable I guess, then happened again 6 months later This time the "manager" (who was more interested in his phone than losing our order) asked if we were sure we had ordered from that location, (we aren't morons, thanks) when I showed him the recent calls on my phone, and his location was the last call made, he never once apologized. All he would say is I don't know how this happened. So then I had to wait 20 min for pizza and they never offered a discount. Final straw was a visit yesterday, 20 min wait to sit inside or be seated immediately outside for our party of 4. We were escorted outside by the hostess, she put two tables together for us. After we sat down another employee stopped and talked to her before she got inside. She then came back over and told us, sorry, we don't put tables together out here you can't sit here. Seriously?!?!?!?! So needless to say we left, decent food with horrible, no, non-existent customer service.

Tomato Bar in Valparaiso, Indiana serves appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and calzones, but their specialty is definitely pizza. I will give them credit for having a pretty cool offering as far as salads go - a build your own option that has a huge amount of toppings to choose from. Still, even that couldn't get me to sway from my rule of not filling up on salad before pizza. Tomato Bar also features a good selection of unique beers, and I felt that their dining area had a neat ambiance. Like their salads, Tomato Bar's pizzas also have a build your own option, and they too have plenty of toppings to choose from. I ordered a 10-inch sausage, green olive, and garlic pizza. I think the saltiness of the green olives went really well with the garlic, but Tomato Bar has their own specialty pizzas if you trust their creations more than mine. Their crust was very sturdy for its general thinness, and it had a lot of cornmeal on the bottom of it. Tomato Bar is certainly a good place to try for pizza in Valparaiso.

Let me preface this review by saying that I probably need to try this place again. I really enjoy pizza and I really don't ever venture outside of my comfort zone when it comes to this beloved fast food dish. After all the stellar reviews and my INSANE on-again-off-again "partner" telling me the wonders of this pizza...I gave it a try. I ordered the "soul-chaser" and there was much to be desired. I feel like this word may be overly harsh, but it was more like a "garbage"pizza. I couldn't taste the different ingredients distinctly, but it sure was SALTY :) I love the concept. Had I not been with such a huge carnivore that day, I'd probably have tried a vegetarian. And the garlic bread....hmm....not sure, but there was definitely room for improvement on that one! Until next time! I look forward to updating this review. +1 for having a drive-thru. -1 for it taking 30-40 mins for a pizza, so its like a "wait-thru."

Love the food here! Everything is good (pizza, sandwiches, apps - you name it!) and customizable to your liking. Service is great. I wish the bar had more than just beer, as I am not a big beer person, but they always have a delicious cider on tap. My parents love to go where when they visit, and it is one o my favorite places to steal away to for good fresh food, great service, and a nice environment. Only detractor is that their hours are unclear - sign says "open late," but I have gone a few times at 9pm to find the restaurant completely shut down. As I write this, I find myself craving a pizza or one of their sandwiches...perhaps I will go there today!!

Had the Alf Tanner pizza on a busy Monday evening. The pizza crust is crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Toppings are high quality. This is not the cheap utility pizza found at most chains. Expect to pay a little more and to get your money's worth. Also had the doughnut bread sticks. Very good as well. Will be back again.

My first act upon entering Tomato Bar Pizza Bakery was to avail myself of the opportunity to use the facilities and while walking in the general direction of said facilities, I looked at the wall and noticed that some benevolent soul had hung the "Ron Swanson Pyramid of Greatness" thereupon. As an adherent of the principles for good living presented therein, I was considerably pleased to see this. But, a Ron Swanson poster does not a five-star review earn. The five-star earning is done by delicious pizza victuals, a fantastic atmosphere (where I can see a fellow fresh baking pizza and flipping it in the air) and friendly service. Also, I am factoring in the somewhat small, but very well chosen beer selection, which I did not partake in, but would have in the event that I had come back later in the evening. As someone who is picky about pizza, I have to say that this is one of the finest artisanal pies I've had in quite a long time. The crust really takes the metaphorical cake and the toppings I had had a complex flavor profile that you don't find on a typical red-gravy and mozzarella pizza. I would go so far to say that Tomato Bar stacks up as an equal to somewhere like Boiler Room in Chicago and it's right here tucked away in a strip mall in Porter County, IN. What a gem and I can't wait to go back.

Great pizza and a good time in this college town. Loved the crust, good beer selection and friendly wait staff. The full house on a Tuesday night probably says all you need to know. Recommended!

Great customer service, great food, and many Gluten free options. Gluten Free Pizza, Sandwiches, Garlic Bread, Wings and much more. One of the few places here in Northwest Indiana with a Gluten Free Menu

Seriously one of my favorite places! Great atmosphere, awesome food, and great beer selection! Prices aren't bad either

  • Donald H.

Nice atmosphere. Not cramped. Kind wait staff. Efficient. The food, though, was greasy and sub par. The filling on my Whatchmaican calzone was delicious but the pastry was just ok. We came here on the strength of the reviews, but we were misled. We won't be back.

We LOVE this place! Every time we have friends in town, we like to take them to Tomato Bar because we know it will always be excellent all the way around! My favorite is hands down the California salad with pesto chicken added! SO GOOD! So fresh! Hands down the best salad you can get anywhere in Valpo! And the pizzas speak for themselves. There are so many speciality pizzas that are different & delicious! My boyfriend's favorite is "The Reef" because of the jerk sauce & pineapple on top and my dad loves the "Meat Gazer" pizza...self-explanatory. The staff is always welcoming & friendly, even when it's super busy & hard to get in! If you want fresh & delicious FOOD (& not something just passing as food), Tomato Bar is where it's at!

  • Dan H.

The reason this is a 3 star place instead of a 5 star place is probably more my problem than theirs, but I'll still say why I did it. I love a good artisanal pizza place. I love going to a place like this with a bunch of people, ordering a bunch of different pizzas to try and going to town. Don't get me wrong, I love the old fashioned regular pizzeria as well, but when I go to a place with smaller, brick oven pizzerias, I want to be surprised. Here, the pizza isn't surprising; it's kind of boring. I don't want you to mistake my lack of enthusiasm for lack of quality. What I was served was great for what it was. The crust is buttery and delicious. But they were just pizza. Good pizza, but not interesting pizza. And it's not necessarily for a lack of trying. I had the Thai Fighter, which I was excited about because I love thai flavors, but it was just flat. It was like someone googled "common thai ingredients" and made a pizza out of it without really injecting any flavor in it. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought this, because it's not on the menu anymore, but it still illustrates my sentiments. So if you want to stick your toe in the water of fancier pizzas this is a good place to start. Or if you just want a high quality kind of regular pizza. But if you're looking to be wowed then you probably won't here, and it's a shame, because they have all the facilities here to make pizza that can wow you.

A MUST for pizza junkies. My boyfriend and I visit friends in Valpo once a year and this place is a mandatory visit. It's a unique little place with lots of options. So many pizza combinations! The service is efficient and the food is prepared in a timely manner. Not pricey unless you go hog wild. ONLY complaint is that the pizza does not make very good leftovers.

    (4)
  • Mary B.

This is definitely one of my favorites. I love the reef, delish!! They have a decent beer selection too but no Stella but they something similar thank god.

  • Brandon M.

They're the self-proclaimed wu-tang of pizza... No clue what that actually means - but I digress, food here has always been good, waitstaff is friendly, and the bill is always reasonable. One suggestion: In the spirit of being the wu-tang of pizza, please develop an ol' dirty calzone for the menu. :) I await your creation.

I took my wife and son (who has dairy allergy) yesterday for dinner. Got there around 6 had to wait an hour. We waited due to my sons allergy and him never having cheese on pizza before which they carry vegan cheese. After our hour wait we ordered. They were out of vegan cheese which would have been nice to know before we waited so long. Our food was good though. The wings sucked. Donuts were amazing. We had the ALF pizza and it was amazing. Top 10 pizzas I've had. Also had an awesome micro brew selection. Lots of local beers on tap. All together great food and beer. Not super expensive either. I will go back again I'll just call first to see if they have vegan cheese.

  • Jeff N.

Pizza was very good. The pizza doughnuts aren't worth ordering. Just baked pizza dough and a side of marinara. Lots of options for toppings and they were great quality. As an example they used whole kalamata olives instead of the typical sliced black olives you see so many times. The pizza bakers put on a show throwing the dough back and forth. The kitchen is wide open. The beer menu is very extensive but simple items like Corona are not available. The place is very loud!!!!! Seating is very awkward unless you have a party of at least 6. This is because most of the booths seat 6 people. Fine if you have lots of big parties but we waited 20 minutes to be seated because most of these large space filling booths only had 2 to 4 people in them. Why not lots of tables that can be moved to accommodate the flow of the business? The real negative here is the service. Or lack there of. It would have been better just to hand the hostess our order and have someone run the pizza out. That's about all The server did. No suggestions, no small talk, Our server ( Taylor) checked back with us at 15 minutes. Luckily the pizza was ok. It would have been a long wait if anything wasn't ok. We even had to ask to have the appetizer plate removed!! And of course ask for the check. Don't let the long wait fool you. Not because of a great total experience. The long wait is because of crazy seating and Inadequate number of servers. Take this great pizza to go!

Wow. Best pizza I've ever had! Errr calzone, actually. The crust was soft but crispy, the cheese was wonderful, and the sauce was the best I've tasted! Excellent service, plus baseball on their TV's made for a great night!

The food was good. - Wings and Customized pizza was great (The only reason they are receiving two stars). However, the service on the other hand was horrendous. I went there today at 2:30 PM. There was two of us and we sat at one of the tall boys by the bar.- nobody else was in the bar area besides some employees that were there on their day off. The hostess got us drinks after sitting there for 10 minutes watching the bartender carry on his conversation with the employees that were sitting at the bar. Then he came took our order gave us plates and that is where it stopped. We never received a drink refill and he wasn't the one that even gave us our food. I'm a server so I understand and am usually really forgiving however today was just absurd. If you want good food and good service I wouldn't go there especially if something as riveting as Ellen is on TV because that is what our server enjoyed watching apparently. However, if you want good food and you don't mind terrible service then by all means go ahead and enjoy your meal and nothing more. Unless they fix their bartenders idea of serving then they won't last in Valpo.

There are two kinds of meals that you absolutely must nail down whenever you move... pizza and burgers. They are staples (so to speak) and important as "go to" meals. So a couple of friends took me to the Tomato Bar because finding a solid pizza place in Valpo is critical. What's important? The sauce and dough. Get those right and you've got a pretty good pizza. We ordered the Soul Chaser pizza... lots of meat, cheese, and some vegetables for good measure. Crust? Very good! Sauce? A bit sweet and tangy. Very good. It's probably more like a gourmet pizza than the classic NY style. That said, it was very good and I probably will return!

  • Katy H.

Perhaps I was expecting too much out of this place. The food was fine, the service was fine and that was the problem. It was all just fine. If I was paying for fine I wouldn't have minded so much, but I was pay for really great and walked away feeling very "meh" about the entire experience. I know people in Valpo tend to get overly excited about new places to eat, but I personally didn't see what all the fuss was about. And, to be honest, if I am going to spend that much money on a pizza I expect to be wowed by it. I likely won't go again.

Was here on my last trip home and meet with some old work friends for lunch. I had seen on facebook that this opened but it was their recommendation. We couldn't agree on a pizza so we didn't get one. But as I wanted to try it anyhow I went with the Jamaican chicken calzone. And they ordered muffalettas which looked delicious. The crust of my calzone was this amazing brown, butter, crispy on the outside but had this just right amount of chewiness. The filling was a perfect blend of cheese, chicken and sauce. If their pizza is anything like the calzone I may have a new favorite pizza place in town when it comes to thin crust. The portions were more than generous as well. I could have probably eaten only half of my calzone and been fine but it was so good i ate it all. My friends both only ate half of their sandwiches and took the rest back to the office. As the place is new, in a very busy location and it was lunch they were busy but not completely packed. Service was attentive and the food came out in a relatively quick manor considering I did order something that had to be backed and couldn't/shouldn't be pre made. They also have a nice selection of local brews, it's not massive but should cover most tastes. Will certainly go back and will recommend to friends.

We LOVE coming here. The pizza is excellent - crust really makes it. We usually order the meat gazer and garlic donuts. Phenomenal every time. Limited but very good beer selection!

Okay, so I just visited Tomato Bar for the third time since it opened. The first two times we weren't impressed in the least. However, everyone I know kept saying how amazing it is, which led me to believe we just weren't ordering the right things. I then began asking the people who love it what they get and we decided to give it one more try with their recommendations. The first 2 visits we got the garlic doughnuts and the meaty pizza with the red sauce. I think that we don't like their red sauce because to us both tasted incredibly bland. Fast forward to last night. We ordered the steak and portobello salad which was so delicious I may be dreaming about it tonight. There is a lot of mushroom on the salad and the flavor is top notch. Then we got the A.L.F. Tanner pizza which is like a Alfredo sauce base with mushrooms chicken bacon and Parmesan cheese. We both agreed that was worth going back for. I am so glad we gave it a third shot, we will definently be returning.

Very yummy! Love the garlic parmesan dough nuts. Love the pizza with fresh ingredients. Good atmosphere. Hope this restaurant is around forever.

The BEST pizza in Valparaiso! They use local ingredients, fresh veggies and herbs, and have amazing sauce! I dig the open kitchen and vast array of toppings (things like steak, fresh pesto, and gourmet cheeses). I have been there several times and had wonderful experiences both times. The service is excellent and the food is even better!

  • Jo K.

Have been very impressed with this place. I have now dinned here 5 times and loved it. Took two teenage boys their a few weeks ago and their parents say its all they talk about now! Love the Doughnuts and the pizza is very fresh and the crust is declicous! My husband loves the craft beer selection! Great new addition to Valparaiso.

  • Adrienne W.

Have been here several times and have never had a bad meal. The pizza is pretty filling, usually I only eat one or two slices, which leaves plenty to take home! I love the BLTA sandwich. They definitely don't skimp on the ingredients! I also love the variety of foods and dietary options. I have a few friends with special diets and this is the best place to accommodate all of them!

Pizza's and salads are great. Go with the Californian salad and Magic Potion pizza, both very good.

The tomato bar serves the best pizza in the Valpo / Chesterton area. They also have a robust and delicious beer selection and also serve Valpo velvet for dessert (provided you have room left - which I typically do not). Great for kids as well. Bake it!

  • Jer B.

The pizza was good, but the prices are outrageous. You would think they made their pizzas out of pure gold or something. Only consider going if you are as rich as the king of England.

Tasty ass pizza here! Also have a pretty good draught selection! Worth trying if you're in valpo

Opening Day, great service! Locally owned with a menu full of original choices along with traditional favorites. The Cheesesteak was big enough to feed 2 people for lunch but we had to try the Magic Potion Pizza as well. Both were great. The Garlic Parmesan Dough Nuts were perfect~ hot & crisp on the outside, soft & chewy on the inside & served with marinara sauce that is steaming hot! Yummy! They also have a wide range of specialty & micro brew beers along with the ol' standbys. My husband thought the X-box playing on the flat screen at the bar was extra cool~ boys & their toys!

  • Erik K.

Damn good pizza! The crust is crisp, flavorful and chewy. Everything I can ask for in a pie! Whoever decides what beers to put on tap did a great job and took the time to think about it. Everything from the crust, sauce and veggies tastes fresh. I wish they were busier though. Each time I've been there, maybe 3-4 tables including mine were dining in the establishment. The service staff is nice and friendly. Do not pass this place without getting a pizza, I dare you!

One of the places the wife and I wanted to eat at while we were back in the area. We were not dissapointed. Good service, Great Music (whoever controls the playlist kudos), Generous portions of food, Very nice Craft Beers.

  • Roland S.

The pizza options here are great, running the gamut from standard to innovative. They also have a number of great craft beer offerings. The service here was pleasant and good. The pizzas were tasty with a kind of rich, buttery crust. The toppings were fresh and well-balanced and the pizzas were well-cooked and not greasy. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other interesting pizzas.

  • Brian B.

Good food and beer. I had a wonderful salad. Very satisfying. I tried the gf's calzone and it was delicious as well. I ate a big piece of it again in front of the fridge at home in the middle of the night. The table next to us was full of morbidly obese Kansas City Royals fans who obnoxiously cheered against the Sox, who lost. Not the restaurant's fault.

  • JL O.

I'm in between a 2-3 star review on this one. Love the decor of the place. Very trendy, and clean too. Lots of selection on the menu. Went with pizza. I ordered the Bianco and my husband created his own with ground beef and green pepper. I also got a side salad and asked to add a little mozzarella cheese. Note...don't do this because I discovered that I was charged $1.25 for this addition!!! Dumb for such a small salad!!! My pizza was just okay. It was pretty bland. Each slice only had a slice of tomato and it needed diced tomatoes. I did like the crust. My husband's pizza had more flavor. Overall the pizza is just okay. Nothing to brag about or jump up and down for. Doubt we'll return since prices are not cheap!!

    (2)
  • Matt S.

The pizza is fun and cooked well but the crust is a little boring. Just not much going on. Topping are of high quality and not the ordinary sort. Great beer selection.

  • Justin M.

Enjoyed my first experience at Tomato Bar. Large menu of food/drink was a plus. The atmosphere was more akin to a buffalo wild wings than a traditional brick oven pizza joint. The pizza was good but not the best in town and was better tasting the day after.

  • Steve S.

Awesome food, even better service and they even gave me a 10% discount for having well behaved kiddos. The Heavy Soul pizza, Bruschetta, and Donuts were delicious. This I my new favorite restaurant in Valpo!!!

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians.
