We came here on the recommendation of a friend. It's a cool cafe in the midst of a downtown that's being revitalized. The server came up to our table and asked what we wanted to order. When I asked him about the special, the Juicy Lucy, he almost started drooling and his demeanor changed. All of a sudden, he was excited and proclaimed that the Juicy Lucy was so good he had ordered it himself a few times. The Juicy Lucy is a hamburger, and a great hamburger I might add, where the key is a tomato bacon jam they spread on it. I'm serious... tomato bacon jam. Not only is the burger juicy and spiced perfectly but the jam gives it a sweet salty taste that is just killer. Along with the search for the perfect BBQ, I have had my share of burgers searching for the best burger. This burger is a special order through the month of June but I'm telling you if you are in the Valpo area, I would recommend ordering it!

Went there for dinner last Friday night with a group of friends. It was my boyfriends birthday so I wanted it to be extra special .. Made a reservation about a week before and the man on the phone was very nice and helpful. When I dropped off balloons and a cake a couple hours before dinner they were also once again very nice about everything .. All the food and drinks were great and I couldn't have been more happy with our experience.

Oh Pikk's...how much I want to like you. Sadly, every single time we go the food gets significantly worse. The last visit was truly our last as it was the 3rd visit in a row where food had to be sent back to the kitchen. On a busy Friday night we took a friend from out of town to Pikk's for dinner. My husband ordered ribs, my friend (who is pregnant) ordered a burger well done, and I had the burger of the month medium rare. In addition we ordered potato skins. The skins used to be 3 large potato halves stuffed with steak and cheese. They now apparently take 2 halves and cut them into strips but charge more money. Nice. When the food arrived the ribs were so burnt they were inedible. My friends burger was raw in the middle and mine was overly well done. We returned all 3 items and when they came back they were done properly. The manager came by to apologize and said he was going to "take care of us"...which turned out to mean a large piece of red velvet cake that had freezer burn. When we commented that we didn't really want the red velvet cake and that it wasn't very good, and that one piece of cake to apologize for 3 returned meals wasn't really enough, we were told that the cake is their signature item and was all they were willing to offer. To make matters worse my friend and I both had some serious stomach issues for the next 24 hours that can only be attributed to our dinner at Pikk's. Perhaps in the future Pikk's will go back to full orders of well prepared food that is priced decently and offer better customer service. When we first moved to Valpo 4 years ago this restaurant was our favorite. Now I wouldn't send anyone there to eat. ever. Would it surprise the manager to know that while waiting for a table at another restaurant in downtown Valpo on Friday we met a couple who immediately brought up how they have had a number of bad experiences with Pikk's and will never return? It didn't surprise us in the least. Skip this place and head anywhere else.

I was worried when I read some of the reviews for this restaurant but my dad was so excited to try Pikk's for the first time that we went for his birthday a few days ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant lived up to most of the reviews... The dinner started with a surly waiter and freezing air temps inside the restaurant. The decor is very pretty and quite cozy. The food was just ok, but for the price and the fact that it took us almost an hour to get it after we ordered, we expected it to be much better. The pork chop and steak tacos received high praise at the table. The steak failed to please. The bbq ribs received mixed reviews. Two of us ordered them and neither of us liked them, but the next day my mom was eating them as left overs and thought they were good. It's getting 2 stars because the manager was very nice and apologetic for our wait. Plus, it also appeared that if you were regulars, you got tremendous service. I saw several of them being hugged and helped right away--the waiter even left our table in the middle of serving us to help his regulars. If I decide to try it again and like it better, I will definitely update my review, but right now, I'm in no hurry to go back.

We've been to Pikks a few times, and today I went for lunch with my family. While the food is good and the service is decent, I do have a complaint. Pikks advertises on a local fundraising card for 10% off of lunches on Fridays and Saturday's. When we tried to use the card, the discount amount was for one lunch meal instead of the entire food portion of the bill. Granted, the additional discount was less than $3, but the point being that we have used the card at other restaurants before, and the discount is a percentage off the entire bill (excluding alcohol). After I got home, I phoned Pikks to talk with the manager. He told me it was for "cardholder" only. So for the fact that I couldn't get a $3 discount for my $40 lunch lost him a customer. He ended our conversation by saying "too bad" and hanging up on me. Great customer service...NOT. Go eat down the street at Bon Femme, Bistro 157, Margaritas, or Valley Kitchen. We eat out a lot and will give continued business to these other downtown restaurants with much better service.

Went on a Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't very crowded - lots of empty seats, no line, and employees socializing amongst themselves - but for some reason it took my boyfriend and I 10-15 minutes to be seated. Several employees walked past us without offering to seat us. After being seated, it took another 25 minutes for our order to be taken. I don't even know why we stayed. When the server came, she was very kind and did her best to meet our needs. The food was also quite good. So overall, two stars. One for my food and one for the nice server. Otherwise, I'll never set foot in that place again. What a disappointment.

I've been going to Pikks since it opened a few years ago and really enjoy it. It's my go to dining option for casual but upscale food (for Valpo). The steaks are always reliable and my wife always enjoys their fish and French martinis. I also often use it for business lunches. In summary, one of the best run and versatile restaurants we have in Valparaiso. The pricing is very fair for what they are offering.

I'm kind of surprised reading the reviews of this place. I don't think it's the greatest restaurant in Valpo; but it's really good, the service is great, and they pour a generous cocktail. During our meal, 3 different people came by to check and make sure we were happy- that alone is worth 4 stars. So this place is in downtown, right on the Square. Given that fact, you know the competition is fierce, so these places know how to bring their "A" game if they want to survive. Pikk's menu is somewhat small, but they do have a lot of daily specials and they have some unique craft cocktails. I was thoroughly impressed with my rye old fashioned- this is a delightful cocktail that packs a punch. My date had the bourbon lemonade (made with Bulleit, I believe) and it was a hefty cocktail as well. I had the flank steak sandwich (open faced) and my date had the special fried chicken. The food was solid, the cooks definitely know what they're doing. The flank was nicely cooked medium rare and was good. The fried chicken was decent, the mashed red potatoes and corn on the cob were the start of the show. I'd suggest brining the chicken or stuffing the cavities of the bird with herbs or something before frying to get a little more flavor, but the batter was delish. Overall our service was awesome. I really appreciated that they checked on us often, the food and drinks were delivered fast, and everything was accurate. Definitely a four-star experience.

It is a shame that I feel I have to give Pikk's a poor review. The food has always been good but the customer service has declined so profoundly that I doubt we'll go back. Last night was the second time in a row that we stood at the entrance for a solid five minutes as wait staff whizzed by without eye contact or a single word (apparently there is no host or hostess). Once we were seated and the bus boy set our table, it was another 10 minutes or so before the waitress came by to see if we had any questions. We did... "Could we see a menu?!" We were already too frustrated with the service so we left. I hope you have better luck!

Pikk's is trying very hard to be a five star restaurant. The prices are high and the staff are certainly attentive. The food is so so, served in gigantic portions. Quantity however does not make up for a lack of quality. The burgers are the size of your head. I didn't eat one, although my friends did. The beers, which I experienced, are overpriced. Tasty, certainly. Just not with $13 a bottle.

My turkey club was lacking in flavor and the bread, despite being toasted, was wet and crumbly. Go to Denny's by I-94 in Portage. It's the same quality food, same quality service, and the prices at Denny's are a lot better. Denny's just doesn't serve beer. There are plenty of good restaurants on the square in Valpo. Go to any one of them within walking distance of Pikk's Tavern and you will get better food and service.

We had a great time with my grandparents. My grandmother's mini burgers were very overcooked- my boyfriend just gave her a piece of fish and ate her order even though they were black. I get the feeling that if she had sent it back they would have been nice about it, but it wasn't a big deal. He likes crispy meat anyway. I had the chopped salad with steak and it was great! The portion size was huge, very filling! Their fish is excellent, I suggest it. My grandfather ordered a burger- he said it wasn't anything to write home about but it was acceptable and he ate it all. I also tried a Pink Cadillac and my boyfriend got a Dragon's Milk beer. I would suggest either, however the drinks are pretty expensive even for a bar so be aware that even for a bar the prices are a bit steep. All in all the food was adequate, nothing more or less. The service was what blew us away, everyone was extremely helpful, polite, and smiling.

Went here once before for lunch - impressed with the sandwiches, but service was slow. My family is in town this weekend, and they were the only restaurant that could quickly accommodate a party of 7 without a reservation, so I figured we'd give it a second shot. Omg. My dad's won't stop talking about how fantastic his ribs were. My uncle's burger looked amazing. And my tuna ceviche was absolutely outstanding. Service was great - everyone was so friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable and no one left hungry. Pikks, you've won me back. Keep up the good work.

We rode in from Hammond and wanted to try something different. As we were walking around downtown we saw a place with a lot of outdoor seating and decided to go there. The place is very clean and the employees are very kind! Took care of us very quickly and efficiently. The food was delicious. We had the hamburgers and they were fantastic! Pricing was very appropriate for how delicious the food was. They also have a pretty wide variety of beer and wine also. I will be definitely coming back in the near future.

I would have given this place more stars a couple years ago, but after being here so many times the place just gets boring. I think the menu has stayed the same since it opened. They may have changed a couple food items, but basically it's the same small menu every single time you go in. There is nothing on the menu that is just fabulous! I think we have probably tried everything on the menu...it's all good, but not great. Having said that...the service is usually good. The atmosphere is nice. Has outdoor dining in the summer. They do have a really good red velvet cake for dessert, but it's a hit or miss. Sometimes it taste very dry, but if you get it on a good day, it's fabulous!!!

Boy, did we pikk the wrong place. This place was a waste of our money and time. The Burger of the Month had a patty that was half the size of the bun. And the bun wasn't even a bun, but rather rye toast slices instead. The mayonnaise was all of 1 squiggle absorbed into the toast. The onion rings were ladened in oil and they were so huge that the breading was doughy and chewy. You could taste the oil. They were the worst onion rings ever. We sat in the booth and liked the ambiance, but the chef or somebody kept standing by the booths. It felt like he had nothing to do in the back kitchen but listen to our conversation and laughter. We were the only customers dining. How annoying and with 4 hours left till closing. As soon as we stood up to leave, he was on that table to clean it like vultures are on a dead carcass.

Over-priced Taco Bell. Waiter thought it was a good idea to argue with us for 10 minutes over how to separate the checks until told to stop (she would not stop!!). Pikk's has a consistent problem with bad and poorly trained waitstaff. To their credit, they did respond and turn off the awful muzak blasting outside. Charges $4.50 for 25¢ of root beer syrup, no refill. Charged $9 for beer (no prices on the menu-for good reason). Mexican special was anything but special- bland, unappetizing fare, plated bare-bones and pretty much tasteless. A chef's shame! Save your dough and go find "Moe's". Better yet, Meditrina is a much better option for better food in the area. That or hike over to Miller Bakery Cafe, or to Gamba's for more class and better fare. For burgers, go to tiny Octave in Chesterton where you can get a gourmet burger and a beer for the price of just a beer at Pikk's, and without the attitude! We were eating at Bon Femme, but got some "sponge chicken" last time, so that is not really a good option at those prices. I have not eaten at KFC since it became Yum Brands, but maybe we should give it a shot- what's there to loose with what's being served up in Valpo?

What a pleasant surprise!!! Stopped into Pikks on a whim. Had some errands in Valpo and needed some dinner. We chose Pikks because quite frankly we got a parking spot right in front. We started with the Scottish Egg for an appetizer. YUM! Perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg although it could've been a tad runnier per my husband. I loved it!! Husband and I split the tavern burger with mushrooms on the side. Perfectly cooked burger!!! Medium rare, juicy, loads of flavor, didn't even need ketchup kind of burger. LOVED every bite. Fries and homemade pickle on the side was delicious too. Glad we split the burger because it was just the right amount for us. Fantastic service!! Prompt, courteous, friendly, and efficient. Bravo!!! Can't wait to go back to try more items!!!

My Ruben was made with the end of the loaf of bread (the heal) and included 1 slice of corned beef. The other sandwiches were just as skimpy and had no taste. We should have stayed home and made our own sandwiches and saved 80.00.

Had a good burger and fish tacos from this place. That's where the positive stops. Our waitress could have cared less about us. I wrote a review on Yelp that Pikk's had removed because I mentioned a waitresses name. Well, now I'll tell you that if you're young and don't look like you have money you'll be treated accordingly (like trash). Pikk's is notorious for horrendous service. Think I'm joking? Look at ALL THE FILTERED REVIEWS on this establishment. Waited over 30 minutes just to get our check in an uncrowded restaurant so the waitress could pad her tips to individuals ordering drinks. Once the hundred dollar bill came out to pay we were best buddies though? Right? Seriously don't give this establishment your money. There are tons of places in Valpo that have better food and haven't paid to have their bad Yelp reviews filtered so they can look like a somewhat reputable establishment.

I've been to Pikk's several times. In fact, my wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. It can be very, very good. The last couple of times I've been here, though, it seems as if it is hit and miss. The one thing I can say, however, that is always very good, is the service. I went there a few weeks ago for a family birthday dinner, and got the roasted half chicken with a twice baked potato. The chicken was decent. It was fully cooked and juicy, but the skin was pretty rubbery. The twice baked potato was not as hot as it should have been. Then, last night, I went again, for another family birthday dinner. I got the Tuesday night special, which is buttermilk fried chicken. It is half of a chicken, which comes with smashed potatoes and a side. I got broccoli. The chicken was decent. Again, it was fully cooked and juicy. But, the breading... it had NO flavor to it at all. It didn't seem they put any seasoning in the breading mixture. I had to put a little bit of salt on them to get the flavor up. Also, the breading was entirely too thick. It was basically the same as taking each piece of chicken, smashing a biscuit on each side of it, and then frying it. The smashed potatoes were good - but, again, not very hot. The broccoli was well cooked - not mushy but not too raw - but, it was so water logged. You bit in to a piece and got a flood of broccoli flavored water. I was dipping a few pieces in the hollandaise sauce that comes with it, and at the end there was a pool of water on top. My wife got a half slab of ribs, which I tasted. They were alright. Not a lot of meat on the portion she got, though. Too much BBQ sauce as far as I was concerned. If you live around here and want good ribs, go to Wagner's. Pikk's can be a great place, though. Anytime I've gotten a steak, it has been very good. It seems if you stay in the restaurant's wheelhouse - steaks and baked potato - you end up with a very good meal. Start straying from it, however... and, in my opinion, you CAN be disappointed. On the up side, however... if it's your birthday, you get a free slice of red-velvet cake. Which, is very good. As far as a dessert goes, I've never been disappointed by the creme brulee. First off, it's huge. Second, it has blueberries in it. Third, it comes with a rather thick brulee to it. It's very good.

Boy oh boy has this place let themselves go ! What in the world happened guys ? Why have the delicious, crunchy fries evolved to being overgreased, dark, limp potato chunks ? It seems that only this past summer we were enoying lunches on your outdoor patio and next thing you know, this unpleasant transformation happens! For instance, who thought that sneaking the fried greasy ham in place of turkey into a sandwich would go unnoticed ? Including everyone's meals and drinks on one bill is also always appreciated -especially when its a party of at least eight people and the waitress simply lets the request for separate checks drop by the wayside. I guess they wanted us to practice our math skills that day. Get yourselves together guys. Whatever you're doing isnt working so maybe radical self improvement should be on the agenda next.

I've been to Pikk's a few times, and I'm always pretty impressed. Their drink list is limited, but they are willing to make anything if they have the necessary ingredients. Everything is very fresh! The Pikk's Fries for appetizers are really good, and you get an option of three sauces for them (try the wasabi mayo, it's amazing). I got the shepherd's pie, and it was easily one of the best I've had that wasn't homemade. The dessert I had was a peanut butter pie, which made me want to die; it was so good. The service was great, and didn't mind that we were such a large group. This is definitely a place to go if you want something classy but comfortable.

From Schererville we can make it to a spot downtown to eat in about the same time as it takes us to get to the square in Valpo-- so we rarely choose Valpo. Pikk's gives me reason to believe that there's hope for great upscale bar food/ steaks in NWI. This was a great place for a weeknight birthday celebration- the house aged porterhouse was superb and the menu interesting enough to bring us back. Not to missed are the martinis and appetizers as well as the desserts; you can eat really well here without being ridiculously spendy. Can't wait to try their famous burgers next.

I went here to celebrate my graduation because I wanted an amazing steak dinner and had heard great things. The steak reminded me a lot of one you get at the Sizzler. It was over-cooked and dry. Parts of it were charred. I ordered it medium rare but if it was a good cut of steak, even cooked medium well/well done it wouldn't have been that bad. We ordered the chocolate cake and it came out still frozen inside - even though when we ordered it the waitress said it's always made fresh. The service was pretty decent but the food was awful for the price. Not going back!

My family reserved the private room downstairs. It was a mixture of mostly adults, but some kids too. They had about three waiters for us. One guy was, at one point, extremely rude to the kids to the point that every adult gave him the side-eye. The next time he showed up, he was over-the-top kid-friendly. Bi-polar, obviously. Our main waiter was super nice and super friendly. Everything regarding the food was good, except for the Mongolian beef that my mom ordered. First of all, Mongolian beef......at Pikks?! Really?! It was the only Asian dish on the menu. They should probably cut that out because my mom had a big-ass piece of fatty tendon in her meal. Gross............. Beyond the bad food for my mom and weirdo server-tude towards my little cousins, I like this place. I like the atmosphere and the food.

I really like Pikks, good place to bring family when they are in town. The building is really cool and has some history to go along w/ it. I don't know why some are saying the service stinks. I've never had a bad server, in fact, someone is filling my water glass every 5 min. The food is a little pricy, but better than going to some chain restaurant......Changed my vote from 4 to 3....sandwiches and burgers are always great, but a couple times I've ordered the chicken and pork and they were dry.

This place is usually very good, but the menu isn't particularly cheap so if you order the wrong thing you're going to want to burn that mother down. Luckily you have me here to tell you what to order, the open face steak sandwich. Middle of the menu as far as price range; top of the pack as far as taste. Their steaks are pretty good too, cooked well, no complaints. My girlfriend is a hamburger maven and she thinks they do it pretty well. Cool bar, definitely one of the best in Valpo. Pretty solid beer selection, although I wish they had more 3 Floyds, given the close proximity and sheer awesomeness of the brewery. Good mixed drinks as well, I have yet to be disappointed. A little bit steep for a law student, but I get by with a little help from my friends. I would not recommend any of the pork options, and some of their sides are lacking but as far as Valpo dining goes, this is one of the many great options. I like the atmosphere, it smells of mahogany and leather bound books. Not too stuffy but it is somewhat upscale. They also have a downstairs which seats quite a few people, so don't be turned away by a busy looking dining room. This place is horrible. The manager spent the entire time we were there circling our table because 1 of our 7 guests happened to be running late. We spent nearly $200 there, yet this guy thought it was appropriate to harrass us. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy as the chicken was mediocre and not worth the hype. For all the choices Valpo has, this place is not worth it. The wait staff was friendly though.

I have been to Pikk's probably 10 times. I WANT to like it but I just never have any luck with the food. The service is friendly and the atmospere is cool. The outdoor dining deck is lovely on a warm summer night. The cocktails ARE good. On the weekends, in the summer, they often have good local musicians. Like I said before "I WANT to like Pikks" I have had the steak sandwich and it tastes like beef jerky. The Pad Thai, in the words of my boyfriend was "the worst I've ever had". I was downtown and ordered fried pickles off of the Eat Up, Wine Down menu and when they arrived they had a tremendous amount of breading and upon biting into it, I realized it was a sweet pickle. Now, of course, not liking sweet pickles is a matter of taste...but it would be a nice thing for a server to let you know. The vast majority of my friends won't even go there because the food items they have tried, haven't been good either. Things that I have liked: shrimp cocktail (they mix your choice of 3 sauces at your table), tuna tartar, and the guacamole. It's few and far between.

They have a separate gluten free menu and gluten free beer; however, I've had experiences where some servers have been very knowledgeable of gluten and others knew nothing. The food at this place has been hit or miss for me since we started going here back in 2008. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times it is really blah. Case in point, I've ordered the chicken alfredo and it's been really delicious, but one time the sauce was practically just milk - yuck - and once it was brought to me without the chicken. When I asked why they apologized and brought out a bowl of plain chicken in that I could mix in myself. Oh, and one time they brought this dish to me with a piece of bread sitting ON TOP of the pasta, which goes to show that the server didn't know anything about gluten or else she would not have brought me the dish like that when I specifically ordered it gluten free. And no, I'm sorry, but those with Celiac can't just pick it off or eat around it. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to make a new batch. I finally stopped ordering the chicken alfredo. The salmon has always been really good though and they have Greens gluten free beer, which I have a hard time finding anywhere else. We went here for the first time a couple of months ago and sat outside on the patio. The staff was super friendly, helpful and efficient. My husband and I both had the fish and chips and, I have to say, it was the best fish and chips we have had in North America. I don't say this lightly as we used to live in England, the home of fish and chips. This is a great little place in downtown valpo...I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back very soon!

Pikk's Tavern has a comfortable atmosphere with a nice (yet small) bar area and great food. Like others have mentioned, it is a bit spendy considering it's located in good ol' Valpo, but for a nice dinner in town, I recommend it. If you're in the mood for a fresh salad, the chopped salad with green goddess dressing is a hit. One my my favorite courses, which Pikk's prepares quite well, is dessert. I went to Pikk's last month with a friend. We shared two desserts after our meal: red velvet cake with a cream cheese icing and a creme brulee. Both desserts were amazing! Follow that up with a famtastic cup of espresso, and I was set. I will be returning.

Took my girlfriend for dinner and it was a very bad experience. I've had multiple servers before working the same table, but the problem here was they didn't communicate and continually dropped the ball. First off it took them 10 minutes after they seated us before asking if we wanted anything to drink. We got the fries appetizer, and the sauces are the only reason this is getting a star. Apparently it was fried chicken night, so we decided to get that and a burger. Although it was a decent sized portion, the chicken was severely overcooked and tasted like burnt grease. Even worse, the first piece I grabbed was actually cold, and it was obvious it was left over from a previous order because the other pieces were ripping hot from being overlooked. My burger came out Pittsburg rare (and tasteless) after ordering it medium. The best part was when we were waiting for drinks and other things during our meal, we could see the servers sitting at the tables in the back right eating instead of doing their job. I've worked in many restaurants, and in each one (and from speaking with others) eating in front of the guests while you are working is unacceptable, and considering it was taking away from the dining experience I was paying for, I'm inclined to agree. With so many places to choose from with good food and service, I don't think I'll ever be back.

I stumbled across this little restaurant walking around Valparaiso. We only stopped in to have one drink and to use the washroom. As soon as we sat down we met one of their regulars who bought us a few rounds and insisted on eating his pretzel he just ordered. It was the best pretzel I ever had & it came with 2 dipping sauces, cheese & sweet and sour. They have a cool private dining area in the basement, great for parties! If I am ever in Valparaiso again I would stop in and try a few more things on the menu.

My family visited Pikk's Tavern to celebrate. We were a mixed group of adults and children, 8 in total. The staff were extremely helpful in getting us a suitable table for our group, and remained very attentive and helpful throughout our meal. Admittedly we went on a Monday night and they were slow, but you can't fake genuine kindness and sense of humor--the staff was simply great. The food itself was good to excellent. The Oysters Rockefeller were very tasty and not overcooked as many restaurants prepare them. The Tuna Tartar was also quite tasty, but not a very large portion for the price. We had a variety of dishes from pasta to Fillet, and all were quite nice. I personally had the ribs, which were surprisingly good for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in barbecue. What really impressed me was the sides; the aug-rotten potatoes were simply amazing! Crispy topped with a bit of a bite from cheddar (or another sharp cheese). Very tasty lemon asparagus, better than average french fries--the sides made the meal. My wife wanted an entree of the mac-and-cheese (which is actually a side) and they happily prepared that for her, which made her happy. The pricing isn't intimidating at all from my perspective, but I live in Chicago not NW Indiana. For Valpo, it's probably on the high end of what you'd expect to pay for steaks and such, but the service quality, decor, and tastiness of the food warrant it. I expect we'll be back soon.

Needed a place to spend a 'date night' with the boyfriend in Valpo. Searched around Yelp and found this place. Overall it was a pretty great decision. Took them a bit longer to seat just the two of us. The decor and service was wonderful. The food was pretty good too. I had the shrimp cooked crab and the boyfriend ordered the pork chop. Perfect amount of food to fill us up without having to bring home leftovers. I would definitely go here again the next time we find ourselves around Valparaiso.

Overpriced for what you get...especially the drinks (yikes!!). Been here a few times now, and probably won't go back again. Last time, the service was absolutely awful. We waited 20 minutes just to get some lousy mustard, and the manager was quite rude about it. In fact, it was the manager who hastily plopped our meals down on the table, then scurried away in a flash without asking if we needed anything else (like mustard, ketchup, etc). Our waitress disappeared for over 30 minutes. Sitting there with empty drinks, and couldn't get the condiments we needed. I was ready to walk out. The food here is average at best. For these prices, I'd expect MUCH MUCH better.

I'm only giving it three stars instead of two because I had one good lunch experience here almost two years ago. A friend and I stopped by for some drinks and lunch during Valpo Homecoming 2011 and had a great time. I thought the ambiance was perfect- not divey but not overly highbrow- they poured stiff drinks and had good beers and the sandwich selections, including my fish tacos, were really interesting, well made and convenient. Cut to yesterday when my husband and I arranged to meet with some friends we had not seen in awhile after the Valpo b-ball game. We all arrived shortly before three and were seated immediately. Then I noticed that we were given the dinner menu. My husband asked when they switched to the dinner menu and the waiter said 3:00. (Later, when we discussed it with the host, he told us 2:30). Normally, I wouldn't care but the dinner menu at Pikk's has a dearth of sandwiches and is way too fancy for a bar. Also overpriced. This just isn't the kind of place where I would want to get a $27 entree. Sorry. Anyway, we did ask if we could order off the lunch menu, seeing as it was only 3:10 but were denied. OK, we were going to make the best of it and ordered drinks. Then I noticed the "Weekly Specials" on the menu and we decided to get an appetizer that looked interesting off of it while we pondered what else we were going to eat. The waiter (who by the way was really pretty dour and douchey), informed us that NONE of the specials listed on the menu were available. At all. Period. Are you kidding me??? I asked why we were given the menus in the first place if that was the case. He freaked and made the host/manager, Aaron, come over. Aaron was super cool, I'll admit. But he wasn't really able to answer our questions. He apologized for not informing us when we were seated that the specials were not available. But then we got conflicting stories as to why that was. One version was that they "just switched over the menu" and the second was that the chef had a "family emergency." I'm really not sure what the truth was, but both seemed pretty dubious. We asked again if we could order from the lunch menu (wouldn't sandwiches be easier to produce than non-existent specials?). Once again, we were denied. Aaron was very apologetic and offered to comp our drinks before we went elsewhere. We really appreciated that and took him up on it. After leaving a decent tip for the waiter who never returned, we put on our coats and were walking out the door when Aaron stopped us to say that as a gesture of good will, he had taken the liberty of ordering us a couple signature appetizers. He said he really wanted us to come back another time. So, we stayed for those- the fries and the hot pretzel. I have heard good things about the pretzel and it was very tasty. Did not try the fries but they looked good and our friends said they were. I would very definitely come back here-- for lunch. And I would also very definitely recommend that they consider lengthening the lunch time, particularly on weekends. I just don't know too many people who want $27 lamb shanks at 3pm after a basketball game. But maybe I'm the weirdo! Three stars for the past experience and Aaron's valiant efforts yesterday.

On Tuesday, August 16th we had received the worst service ever from a dining est...ablishment! The owner Phil told us to try someone else next time after we initially gave up our table of 6 to a group with a person in a wheel chair. We arrived at 6:30pm and the entrees came at 8:40pm...for only TWO of our party of SIX. The other entrees came out 20 mins after. Bread was never served to our table and we watched three other groups get up and leave without paying because of the horrible service and rude staff. My boyfriend and I approached the owner who told us to try somewhere else next time with no appology or anything close to a credit to our bill. Please no one ever eat here again. This business deserves to be closed ASAP because service to the paying customer is of no importance to them.

I have been here twice since I moved to Valparaiso and have had great experiences both times. The first time, I was there with my family who was visiting from the east coast and we had a great time. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The cheeseburger there is the best I have ever had! Really nice atmosphere at the restaurant too which is always a wonderful plus :) Update 5/2012 - I changed my review from 4 stars to 3 stars based on a recent experience here where they forgot about us. My husband and I called and made reservations for dinner. When we got there, our table wasn't ready so we happily said we'd wait at the bar. The hostess said she would come and get us when our table was ready. The place was really busy - every table full and other people waiting at the bar too. Finally, an hour went by and I saw two parties get seated before us - two parties that got there well after we did. I went to the hostess (same person) to ask what was up and the hostess had no idea who I was and said, "Did you put your name in?" I told her we'd called and made reservations and that she said she would come and get us when our table was ready. She felt really bad and apologized and said they'd get us seated right away, which we were. Then a guy came over to us, maybe the manager, and also apologized. My husband was upset because we were sitting at the bar paying money for beers when we could/should have been sitting at our table a long time ago. He said this and the guy/manager didn't seem to care. Pikk's should have offered us a free round of drinks - or something - to make up for their mistake. But they didn't offer us anything. This made me feel like they didn't care about us. It would have been just a few bucks out of their pocket for a round of drinks or free appetizer or something. People make mistakes - I get it - but the restaurant business is pure customer service. By not offering to do something to make up for their stupid mistake it makes me feel that Pikk's doesn't really care about their customers (or at least they didn't care about us). Won't be going back here anytime soon.

What a charming place and I totally disagree with L. R. about the pricing. Sure, Pikk's is a bit pricey for NWI but it is not outrageous. It is owned by Paul LoDuca (Vinci, Adobo Grill). We started with the antipasto appetizer special. There was a generous serving of thick cut prosciutto, some excellent salami, a nice portion of Gorgonzola, chicken bruschetta and the best - cheese cheesecake. All was served on a bed of fresh spinach with a sweet balsamic vinegar and olive oil sauce. It was a large portion and we could have had salad or soup and made a meal of it. Mom had the open faced steak sandwich ($12.99) and I had the burger ($9.99). Both came with fresh cut, slender fries. The flank steak was served rare and had Pikk's own steak sauce drizzled on top. My burger was served with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Despite ordering rare, it came out medium. I made a comment to Mom and the waiter overheard and immediately offered a replacement. I took it and the fresh burger came out rare and very hot. The burger was grilled and one of the best I have had. The wines begin at $7.50 for a generous glass and there is a small, quality selection available. The mini burgers are $1.00 during happy hour 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday and the daily special (if it is available) is half price during the last hour before closing. There are special events the 2nd Thursday of every month. The inside of Pikk's is dark and woody. One wall is all brick. It is not too noisy. It is a challenge to get to the restrooms as you have to pass the open kitchen window where servers are ordering and picking up their meal. The ladies room was nicely decorated. There was plenty of outdoor dining available. Service was excellent - probably the best I have experienced in a long, long time. Pikk's does a brunch on Sunday and dishes begin at $7.99 up to $9.99. We're anxious to return to this nice addition to Valpo.

Woof. I would give it a 4 if the whole menu was fantastic and the menu was a bit cheaper. Here is the trick. Pikk's is good at items that are not fancy. order a fancy expensive item on their menu and it is obvious the chef isnt as focused on that. This is much like ordering a burger at a Chinese eatery. Order up what you would consider bar food and they take that and up the ante. The open face steak sandwhich is their finest, their fries divine and their basic dishes are where it is at. order pad Thai at a tavern? of course it isn't going to be good. Another secret: New years eve is awesome here. No charge! but they add new year's even specials and drinks and stay open and celebrate with you.

Lets put this in perspective. For Valparaiso Indiana it gets 3 or 4 stars. If you are stacking it against Chicago it would receive 2 stars. It is quaint, cozy and makes you feel like you belong. They have a well stocked bar and the bartenders are well versed in making the drinks on the menu, but don't expect anything inspired off the cuff. They are not well versed in mixing even the most rudimentary cocktails. Stick with the menu and you will enjoy a drink. The food is hit or miss like a previous post mentioned. I have been there about 6 to 8 times and seem to enjoy it most when I just share a few appetizers. The blue cheese small burgers are really wonderful. Honestly, you will crave them once you've had them, and return wanting more...and then get lulled into thinking you should explore more of the menu since those damn burgers were so good...and that's where you will be disappointed. The steaks are overpriced and just "ok", all sides are a la carte and equally "ok". Fun place to catch live music with friends, have a drink and share apps. Recommend the mini burgers, tuna poke, fries, table side shrimp cocktail is good-but way overpriced for such small shrimp, the steak salad was alright too. The steak, chops, salmon and pasta dishes were just "ok", especially for the price.

I recently was in Chicago and dined on fabulous cuisine for $20. People in Valpo obviously have no idea what good grub is. Or maybe I watch too much Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. First time there. Will never go back. Every beer my husband ordered, they didn't have it. My problem is I always compare pubs to the Nine Irish Brothers in West Lafayette which is fabulous..all food is amazing and inexpensive. Will not go back. That is two downtown Valpo restaurants I have tried so far and both have been overpriced and rubbish.

Not impressed at all. My dining club chose this place to eat last month. The food was okay. Not fantastic, not awful. The price floored every one of us. Not one of us will go back. Not sure what they're trying to accomplish but soup shouldn't cost so much. Oh, they also charged if you got pasta and wanted garlic bread with it. The garlic bread was $2.00 a slice. My goodness, they must think they're in New York City because I've paid those kind of prices there. This is not New York City for God's sake. ** As an aside - I want to add that my dinner club went for dinner. We had actual entrees. Had we gotten sandwiches and burgers, our bill would have been much less I'm sure. I don't know about Vinci or Adobo Grill, but I can tell you my last dinner in Vail cost less.

I had the WORST experience at PIKKs ever!! We got there and they had ran out of bread and chicken on a tuesday night. We got there at 6:30 and did not get out food for 2 hours. the food came partly cold and it took another 18 minutes for them to bring the rest of the party of 5's food. I spoke with the owner twice and he told me if I don't like it then to go somewhere else. The owner does not know how to treat people including his own paying customers. He told me that since our bill was only 100 dollars we have nothing to complain about. Please do not waste your time or money on this place in Valpo. I am not one to complain but this was by far the worst place/service I have ever had in my life.

We had a wonderful experience in the private nook as we celebrated three family birthdays. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The bill was stiff but the menu had unique options we really enjoyed. I especially loved the Lobster-miso soup with tofu as well as the mini blue cheese stuffed burgers. Everyone loved their food. Steaks were a little underdone, even for being ordered med rare, then when we asked for one to be cooked a little more, it took forever. The service is friendly and pleasant but slow. An extra side was ordered after everything else was served...but it never came. Busing leaves something to be desired as well as drink refill attentiveness. It was pretty busy for a late Monday evening in April, but cleared out around 9pm. We had a wonderful time, enjoyed the unique dishes, others were just okay. Loved having the private area, made a reservation about a week ahead of time. We'll definitely go back but we knew what to order based on other Yelp reviews and also knew we would probably wait a while for our service. In their defense, they may have thought we were waiting on more people or that we wanted a long leisurely dinner. We'll go back and I'll update my review. Until them, I would recommend giving it a try! It's not cheep but I didn't find it outrageous at all. But don't go if you want a $20 meal, it's a la carte, so plan to spend $40/person without desserts and minimal drinks. Nice atmosphere. If we did not have the party nook, I would have not enjoyed the nose level or lack of privacy, but that's just me. I wish there was a 3.5 but I'm going to give Pikk's 4 stars, but it's a soft four, waiting on my next visit :)

I've been to Pikk's a few times, and I'm always pretty impressed. Their drink list is limited, but they are willing to make anything if they have the necessary ingredients. Everything is very fresh! The Pikk's Fries for appetizers are really good, and you get an option of three sauces for them (try the wasabi mayo, it's amazing). I got the shepherd's pie, and it was easily one of the best I've had that wasn't homemade. The dessert I had was a peanut butter pie, which made me want to die; it was so good. The service was great, and didn't mind that we were such a large group. This is definitely a place to go if you want something classy but comfortable.

From Schererville we can make it to a spot downtown to eat in about the same time as it takes us to get to the square in Valpo-- so we rarely choose Valpo. Pikk's gives me reason to believe that there's hope for great upscale bar food/ steaks in NWI. This was a great place for a weeknight birthday celebration- the house aged porterhouse was superb and the menu interesting enough to bring us back. I'm kind of surprised reading the reviews of this place. I don't think it's the greatest restaurant in Valpo; but it's really good, the service is great, and they pour a generous cocktail. During our meal, 3 different people came by to check and make sure we were happy- that alone is worth 4 stars. So this place is in downtown, right on the Square. Given that fact, you know the competition is fierce, so these places know how to bring their "A" game if they want to survive. Pikk's menu is somewhat small, but they do have a lot of daily specials and they have some unique craft cocktails. I was thoroughly impressed with my rye old fashioned- this is a delightful cocktail that packs a punch. My date had the bourbon lemonade (made with Bulleit, I believe) and it was a hefty cocktail as well. I had the flank steak sandwich (open faced) and my date had the special fried chicken. The food was solid, the cooks definitely know what they're doing. The flank was nicely cooked medium rare and was good. The fried chicken was decent, the mashed red potatoes and corn on the cob were the start of the show. I'd suggest brining the chicken or stuffing the cavities of the bird with herbs or something before frying to get a little more flavor, but the batter was delish. Overall our service was awesome. I really appreciated that they checked on us often, the food and drinks were delivered fast, and everything was accurate. Definitely a four-star experience.

My family is in town this weekend, and they were the only restaurant that could quickly accommodate a party of 7 without a reservation, so I figured we'd give it a second shot. Omg. My dad's won't stop talking about how fantastic his ribs were. My uncle's burger looked amazing. And my tuna ceviche was absolutely outstanding. It is a shame that I feel I have to give Pikk's a poor review. The food has always been good but the customer service has declined so profoundly that I doubt we'll go back. Last night was the second time in a row that we stood at the entrance for a solid five minutes as wait staff whizzed by without eye contact or a single word (apparently there is no host or hostess). Once we were seated and the bus boy set our table, it was another 10 minutes or so before the waitress came by to see if we had any questions. We did... "Could we see a menu?!" We were already too frustrated with the service so we left. I hope you have better luck!

Pikk's is trying very hard to be a five star restaurant. The prices are high and the staff are certainly attentive. The food is so so, served in gigantic portions. Quantity however does not make up for a lack of quality. The burgers are the size of your head. I didn't eat one, although my friends did. The beers, which I experienced, are overpriced. Tasty, certainly. Just not with $13 a bottle.

Go to Denny's by I-94 in Portage. It's the same quality food, same quality service, and the prices at Denny's are a lot better. Denny's just doesn't serve beer. There are plenty of good restaurants on the square in Valpo. Go to any one of them within walking distance of Pikk's Tavern and you will get better food and service.

We had a great time with my grandparents. My grandmother's mini burgers were very overcooked- my boyfriend just gave her a piece of fish and ate her order even though they were black. I get the feeling that if she had sent it back they would have been nice about it, but it wasn't a big deal. He likes crispy meat anyway. I had the chopped salad with steak and it was great! The portion size was huge, very filling! Their fish is excellent, I suggest it. My grandfather ordered a burger- he said it wasn't anything to write home about but it was acceptable and he ate it all. I also tried a Pink Cadillac and my boyfriend got a Dragon's Milk beer. I would suggest either, however the drinks are pretty expensive even for a bar so be aware that even for a bar the prices are a bit steep. All in all the food was adequate, nothing more or less. The service was what blew us away, everyone was extremely helpful, polite, and smiling.

The place is very clean and the employees are very kind! Took care of us very quickly and efficiently. The food was delicious. We had the hamburgers and they were fantastic! Pricing was very appropriate for how delicious the food was. They also have a pretty wide variety of beer and wine also. I will be definitely coming back in the near future.

I would have given this place more stars a couple years ago, but after being here so many times the place just gets boring. I think the menu has stayed the same since it opened. They may have changed a couple food items, but basically it's the same small menu every single time you go in. There is nothing on the menu that is just fabulous! I think we have probably tried everything on the menu...it's all good, but not great. Having said that...the service is usually good. The atmosphere is nice. Has outdoor dining in the summer. They do have a really good red velvet cake for dessert, but it's a hit or miss. Sometimes it taste very dry, but if you get it on a good day, it's fabulous!!!

Boy, did we pikk the wrong place. This place was a waste of our money and time. The Burger of the Month had a patty that was half the size of the bun. And the bun wasn't even a bun, but rather rye toast slices instead. The mayonnaise was all of 1 squiggle absorbed into the toast. The onion rings were ladened in oil and they were so huge that the breading was doughy and chewy. You could taste the oil. They were the worst onion rings ever. We sat in the booth and liked the ambiance, but the chef or somebody kept standing by the booths. It felt like he had nothing to do in the back kitchen but listen to our conversation and laughter. We were the only customers dining. How annoying and with 4 hours left till closing. As soon as we stood up to leave, he was on that table to clean it like vultures are on a dead carcass.

I've been to Pikk's several times. In fact, my wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. It can be very, very good. The last couple of times I've been here, though, it seems as if it is hit and miss. The one thing I can say, however, that is always very good, is the service. I went there a few weeks ago for a family birthday dinner, and got the roasted half chicken with a twice baked potato. The chicken was decent. It was fully cooked and juicy, but the skin was pretty rubbery. The twice baked potato was not as hot as it should have been. Then, last night, I went again, for another family birthday dinner. I got the Tuesday night special, which is buttermilk fried chicken. It is half of a chicken, which comes with smashed potatoes and a side. I got broccoli. The chicken was decent. Again, it was fully cooked and juicy. But, the breading... it had NO flavor to it at all. It didn't seem they put any seasoning in the breading mixture. I had to put a little bit of salt on them to get the flavor up. Also, the breading was entirely too thick. It was basically the same as taking each piece of chicken, smashing a biscuit on each side of it, and then frying it. The smashed potatoes were good - but, again, not very hot. The broccoli was well cooked - not mushy but not too raw - but, it was so water logged. You bit in to a piece and got a flood of broccoli flavored water. I was dipping a few pieces in the hollandaise sauce that comes with it, and at the end there was a pool of water on top. My wife got a half slab of ribs, which I tasted. They were alright. Not a lot of meat on the portion she got, though. Too much BBQ sauce as far as I was concerned. If you live around here and want good ribs, go to Wagner's. Pikk's can be a great place, though. Anytime I've gotten a steak, it has been very good. It seems if you stay in the restaurant's wheelhouse - steaks and baked potato - you end up with a very good meal. Start straying from it, however... and, in my opinion, you CAN be disappointed. On the up side, however... if it's your birthday, you get a free slice of red-velvet cake. Which, is very good. As far as a dessert goes, I've never been disappointed by the creme brulee. First off, it's huge. Second, it has blueberries in it. Third, it comes with a rather thick brulee to it. It's very good.

We came here on the recommendation of a friend. It's a cool cafe in the midst of a downtown that's being revitalized. The server came up to our table and asked what we wanted to order. When I asked him about the special, the Juicy Lucy, he almost started drooling and his demeanor changed. All of a sudden, he was excited and proclaimed that the Juicy Lucy was so good he had ordered it himself a few times. The Juicy Lucy is a hamburger, and a great hamburger I might add, where the key is a tomato bacon jam they spread on it. I'm serious... tomato bacon jam. Not only is the burger juicy and spiced perfectly but the jam gives it a sweet salty taste that is just killer. Along with the search for the perfect BBQ, I have had my share of burgers searching for the best burger. This burger is a special order through the month of June but I'm telling you if you are in the Valpo area, I would recommend ordering it!

Over-priced Taco Bell. Waiter thought it was a good idea to argue with us for 10 minutes over how to separate the checks until told to stop (she would not stop!!). Pikk's has a consistent problem with bad and poorly trained waitstaff. To their credit, they did respond and turn off the awful muzak blasting outside. Charges $4.50 for 25¢ of root beer syrup, no refill. Charged $9 for beer (no prices on the menu-for good reason). Mexican special was anything but special- bland, unappetizing fare, plated bare-bones and pretty much tasteless. A chef's shame! Save your dough and go find "Moe's". Better yet, Meditrina is a much better option for better food in the area. That or hike over to Miller Bakery Cafe, or to Gamba's for more class and better fare. For burgers, go to tiny Octave in Chesterton where you can get a gourmet burger and a beer for the price of just a beer at Pikk's, and without the attitude! We were eating at Bon Femme, but got some "sponge chicken" last time, so that is not really a good option at those prices. I have not eaten at KFC since it became Yum Brands, but maybe we should give it a shot- what's there to loose with what's being served up in Valpo?

What a pleasant surprise!!! Stopped into Pikks on a whim. Had some errands in Valpo and needed some dinner. We chose Pikks because quite frankly we got a parking spot right in front. We started with the Scottish Egg for an appetizer. YUM! Perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg although it could've been a tad runnier per my husband. I loved it!! Husband and I split the tavern burger with mushrooms on the side. Perfectly cooked burger!!! Medium rare, juicy, loads of flavor, didn't even need ketchup kind of burger. LOVED every bite. Fries and homemade pickle on the side was delicious too. Glad we split the burger because it was just the right amount for us. Fantastic service!! Prompt, courteous, friendly, and efficient. Bravo!!! Can't wait to go back to try more items!!!

We were looking for a place to eat lunch on a Sunday afternoon with friends from out of town. We chose Pikk's and figured you can't go wrong when ordering sandwiches. We were mistaken. My Ruben was made with the end of the loaf of bread (the heal) and included 1 slice of corned beef. The other sandwiches were just as skimpy and had no taste. We should have stayed home and made our own sandwiches and saved 80.00.

Had a good burger and fish tacos from this place. That's where the positive stops. Our waitress could have cared less about us. I wrote a review on Yelp that Pikk's had removed because I mentioned a waitresses name. Well, now I'll tell you that if you're young and don't look like you have money you'll be treated accordingly (like trash). Pikk's is notorious for horrendous service. Think I'm joking? Look at ALL THE FILTERED REVIEWS on this establishment. Waited over 30 minutes just to get our check in an uncrowded restaurant so the waitress could pad her tips to individuals ordering drinks. Once the hundred dollar bill came out to pay we were best buddies though? Right? Seriously don't give this establishment your money. There are tons of places in Valpo that have better food and haven't paid to have their bad Yelp reviews filtered so they can look like a somewhat reputable establishment.

Made a reservation about a week before and the man on the phone was very nice and helpful. When I dropped off balloons and a cake a couple hours before dinner they were also once again very nice about everything .. Oh Pikk's...how much I want to like you. Sadly, every single time we go the food gets significantly worse. The last visit was truly our last as it was the 3rd visit in a row where food had to be sent back to the kitchen. On a busy Friday night we took a friend from out of town to Pikk's for dinner. My husband ordered ribs, my friend (who is pregnant) ordered a burger well done, and I had the burger of the month medium rare. In addition we ordered potato skins. The skins used to be 3 large potato halves stuffed with steak and cheese. They now apparently take 2 halves and cut them into strips but charge more money. Nice. When the food arrived the ribs were so burnt they were inedible. My friends burger was raw in the middle and mine was overly well done. We returned all 3 items and when they came back they were done properly. The manager came by to apologize and said he was going to "take care of us"...which turned out to mean a large piece of red velvet cake that had freezer burn. When we commented that we didn't really want the red velvet cake and that it wasn't very good, and that one piece of cake to apologize for 3 returned meals wasn't really enough, we were told that the cake is their signature item and was all they were willing to offer. To make matters worse my friend and I both had some serious stomach issues for the next 24 hours that can only be attributed to our dinner at Pikk's. Perhaps in the future Pikk's will go back to full orders of well prepared food that is priced decently and offer better customer service. When we first moved to Valpo 4 years ago this restaurant was our favorite. Now I wouldn't send anyone there to eat. ever. Would it surprise the manager to know that while waiting for a table at another restaurant in downtown Valpo on Friday we met a couple who immediately brought up how they have had a number of bad experiences with Pikk's and will never return? It didn't surprise us in the least. Skip this place and head anywhere else.

Boy oh boy has this place let themselves go ! What in the world happened guys ? Why have the delicious, crunchy fries evolved to being overgreased, dark, limp potato chunks ? It seems that only this past summer we were enoying lunches on your outdoor patio and next thing you know, this unpleasant transformation happens! For instance, who thought that sneaking the fried greasy ham in place of turkey into a sandwich would go unnoticed ? Including everyone's meals and drinks on one bill is also always appreciated -especially when its a party of at least eight people and the waitress simply lets the request for separate checks drop by the wayside. I guess they wanted us to practice our math skills that day. Get yourselves together guys. Whatever you're doing isnt working so maybe radical self improvement should be on the agenda next.

My family reserved the private room downstairs. It was a mixture of mostly adults, but some kids too. They had about three waiters for us. One guy was, at one point, extremely rude to the kids to the point that every adult gave him the side-eye. The next time he showed up, he was over-the-top kid-friendly. Bi-polar, obviously. Our main waiter was super nice and super friendly. Everything regarding the food was good, except for the Mongolian beef that my mom ordered. First of all, Mongolian beef......at Pikks?! Really?! It was the only Asian dish on the menu. They should probably cut that out because my mom had a big-ass piece of fatty tendon in her meal. Gross............. Beyond the bad food for my mom and weirdo server-tude towards my little cousins, I like this place. I like the atmosphere and the food.

I really like Pikks, good place to bring family when they are in town. The building is really cool and has some history to go along w/ it. I don't know why some are saying the service stinks. I've never had a bad server, in fact, someone is filling my water glass every 5 min. The food is a little pricy, but better than going to some chain restaurant......Changed my vote from 4 to 3....sandwiches and burgers are always great, but a couple times I've ordered the chicken and pork and they were dry.

This place is usually very good, but the menu isn't particularly cheap so if you order the wrong thing you're going to want to burn that mother down. Luckily you have me here to tell you what to order, the open face steak sandwich. Middle of the menu as far as price range; top of the pack as far as taste. Their steaks are pretty good too, cooked well, no complaints. My girlfriend is a hamburger maven and she thinks they do it pretty well. Cool bar, definitely one of the best in Valpo. Pretty solid beer selection, although I wish they had more 3 Floyds, given the close proximity and sheer awesomeness of the brewery. Good mixed drinks as well, I have yet to be disappointed. A little bit steep for a law student, but I get by with a little help from my friends. I would not recommend any of the pork options, and some of their sides are lacking but as far as Valpo dining goes, this is one of the many great options. I like the atmosphere, it smells of mahogany and leather bound books. Not too stuffy but it is somewhat upscale. They also have a downstairs which seats quite a few people, so don't be turned away by a busy looking dining room. This place is horrible. The manager spent the entire time we were there circling our table because 1 of our 7 guests happened to be running late. We spent nearly $200 there, yet this guy thought it was appropriate to harrass us. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy as the chicken was mediocre and not worth the hype. For all the choices Valpo has, this place is not worth it. The wait staff was friendly though.

I have been to Pikk's probably 10 times. I WANT to like it but I just never have any luck with the food. The service is friendly and the atmospere is cool. The outdoor dining deck is lovely on a warm summer night. The cocktails ARE good. On the weekends, in the summer, they often have good local musicians. Like I said before "I WANT to like Pikks" I have had the steak sandwich and it tastes like beef jerky. The Pad Thai, in the words of my boyfriend was "the worst I've ever had". I was downtown and ordered fried pickles off of the Eat Up, Wine Down menu and when they arrived they had a tremendous amount of breading and upon biting into it, I realized it was a sweet pickle. Now, of course, not liking sweet pickles is a matter of taste...but it would be a nice thing for a server to let you know. The vast majority of my friends won't even go there because the food items they have tried, haven't been good either. Things that I have liked: shrimp cocktail (they mix your choice of 3 sauces at your table), tuna tartar, and the guacamole. It's few and far between.

They have a separate gluten free menu and gluten free beer; however, I've had experiences where some servers have been very knowledgeable of gluten and others knew nothing. The food at this place has been hit or miss for me since we started going here back in 2008. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times it is really blah. Case in point, I've ordered the chicken alfredo and it's been really delicious, but one time the sauce was practically just milk - yuck - and once it was brought to me without the chicken. When I asked why they apologized and brought out a bowl of plain chicken in that I could mix in myself. Oh, and one time they brought this dish to me with a piece of bread sitting ON TOP of the pasta, which goes to show that the server didn't know anything about gluten or else she would not have brought me the dish like that when I specifically ordered it gluten free. And no, I'm sorry, but those with Celiac can't just pick it off or eat around it. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to make a new batch. I finally stopped ordering the chicken alfredo. The salmon has always been really good though and they have Greens gluten free beer, which I have a hard time finding anywhere else. The atmosphere and location are great too, and the staff have always been friendly.

My husband and I both had the fish and chips and, I have to say, it was the best fish and chips we have had in North America. I don't say this lightly as we used to live in England, the home of fish and chips. This is a great little place in downtown valpo...I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back very soon!

Pikk's Tavern has a comfortable atmosphere with a nice (yet small) bar area and great food. Like others have mentioned, it is a bit spendy considering it's located in good ol' Valpo, but for a nice dinner in town, I recommend it. If you're in the mood for a fresh salad, the chopped salad with green goddess dressing is a hit. One my my favorite courses, which Pikk's prepares quite well, is dessert. I went to Pikk's last month with a friend. We shared two desserts after our meal: red velvet cake with a cream cheese icing and a creme brulee. Both desserts were amazing! Follow that up with a famtastic cup of espresso, and I was set. I will be returning.

Took my girlfriend for dinner and it was a very bad experience. I've had multiple servers before working the same table, but the problem here was they didn't communicate and continually dropped the ball. First off it took them 10 minutes after they seated us before asking if we wanted anything to drink. We got the fries appetizer, and the sauces are the only reason this is getting a star. Apparently it was fried chicken night, so we decided to get that and a burger. Although it was a decent sized portion, the chicken was severely overcooked and tasted like burnt grease. Even worse, the first piece I grabbed was actually cold, and it was obvious it was left over from a previous order because the other pieces were ripping hot from being overlooked. My burger came out Pittsburg rare (and tasteless) after ordering it medium. The best part was when we were waiting for drinks and other things during our meal, we could see the servers sitting at the tables in the back right eating instead of doing their job. I've worked in many restaurants, and in each one (and from speaking with others) eating in front of the guests while you are working is unacceptable, and considering it was taking away from the dining experience I was paying for, I'm inclined to agree. With so many places to choose from with good food and service, I don't think I'll ever be back.

I was worried when I read some of the reviews for this restaurant but my dad was so excited to try Pikk's for the first time that we went for his birthday a few days ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant lived up to most of the reviews... The dinner started with a surly waiter and freezing air temps inside the restaurant. The decor is very pretty and quite cozy. The food was just ok, but for the price and the fact that it took us almost an hour to get it after we ordered, we expected it to be much better. The pork chop and steak tacos received high praise at the table. The steak failed to please. The bbq ribs received mixed reviews. Two of us ordered them and neither of us liked them, but the next day my mom was eating them as left overs and thought they were good. It's getting 2 stars because the manager was very nice and apologetic for our wait. Plus, it also appeared that if you were regulars, you got tremendous service. I saw several of them being hugged and helped right away--the waiter even left our table in the middle of serving us to help his regulars. If I decide to try it again and like it better, I will definitely update my review, but right now, I'm in no hurry to go back.

We've been to Pikks a few times, and today I went for lunch with my family. While the food is good and the service is decent, I do have a complaint. Pikks advertises on a local fundraising card for 10% off of lunches on Fridays and Saturday's. When we tried to use the card, the discount amount was for one lunch meal instead of the entire food portion of the bill. Granted, the additional discount was less than $3, but the point being that we have used the card at other restaurants before, and the discount is a percentage off the entire bill (excluding alcohol). After I got home, I phoned Pikks to talk with the manager. He told me it was for "cardholder" only. So for the fact that I couldn't get a $3 discount for my $40 lunch lost him a customer. He ended our conversation by saying "too bad" and hanging up on me. Great customer service...NOT. Go eat down the street at Bon Femme, Bistro 157, Margaritas, or Valley Kitchen. We eat out a lot and will give continued business to these other downtown restaurants with much better service.

Went on a Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't very crowded - lots of empty seats, no line, and employees socializing amongst themselves - but for some reason it took my boyfriend and I 10-15 minutes to be seated. Several employees walked past us without offering to seat us. After being seated, it took another 25 minutes for our order to be taken. I don't even know why we stayed. When the server came, she was very kind and did her best to meet our needs. The food was also quite good. So overall, two stars. One for my food and one for the nice server. Otherwise, I'll never set foot in that place again. What a disappointment.

The steaks are always reliable and my wife always enjoys their fish and French martinis. I also often use it for business lunches. In summary, one of the best run and versatile restaurants we have in Valparaiso. The pricing is very fair for what they are offering.

I went here to celebrate my graduation because I wanted an amazing steak dinner and had heard great things. The steak reminded me a lot of one you get at the Sizzler. It was over-cooked and dry. Parts of it were charred. I ordered it medium rare but if it was a good cut of steak, even cooked medium well/well done it wouldn't have been that bad. We ordered the chocolate cake and it came out still frozen inside - even though when we ordered it the waitress said it's always made fresh. The service was pretty decent but the food was awful for the price. Not going back!

I stumbled across this little restaurant walking around Valparaiso. We only stopped in to have one drink and to use the washroom. As soon as we sat down we met one of their regulars who bought us a few rounds and insisted on eating his pretzel he just ordered. It was the best pretzel I ever had & it came with 2 dipping sauces, cheese & sweet and sour. They have a cool private dining area in the basement, great for parties! If I am ever in Valparaiso again I would stop in and try a few more things on the menu.

My family visited Pikk's Tavern to celebrate. We were a mixed group of adults and children, 8 in total. The staff were extremely helpful in getting us a suitable table for our group, and remained very attentive and helpful throughout our meal. Admittedly we went on a Monday night and they were slow, but you can't fake genuine kindness and sense of humor--the staff was simply great. The food itself was good to excellent. The Oysters Rockefeller were very tasty and not overcooked as many restaurants prepare them. The Tuna Tartar was also quite tasty, but not a very large portion for the price. We had a variety of dishes from pasta to Fillet, and all were quite nice. I personally had the ribs, which were surprisingly good for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in barbecue. What really impressed me was the sides; the aug-rotten potatoes were simply amazing! Crispy topped with a bit of a bite from cheddar (or another sharp cheese). Very tasty lemon asparagus, better than average french fries--the sides made the meal. My wife wanted an entree of the mac-and-cheese (which is actually a side) and they happily prepared that for her, which made her happy. The pricing isn't intimidating at all from my perspective, but I live in Chicago not NW Indiana. For Valpo, it's probably on the high end of what you'd expect to pay for steaks and such, but the service quality, decor, and tastiness of the food warrant it. I expect we'll be back soon.

Perfect amount of food to fill us up without having to bring home leftovers. I would definitely go here again the next time we find ourselves around Valparaiso.

Overpriced for what you get...especially the drinks (yikes!!). Been here a few times now, and probably won't go back again. Last time, the service was absolutely awful. We waited 20 minutes just to get some lousy mustard, and the manager was quite rude about it. In fact, it was the manager who hastily plopped our meals down on the table, then scurried away in a flash without asking if we needed anything else (like mustard, ketchup, etc). Our waitress disappeared for over 30 minutes. Sitting there with empty drinks, and couldn't get the condiments we needed. I was ready to walk out. The food here is average at best. For these prices, I'd expect MUCH MUCH better.

I'm only giving it three stars instead of two because I had one good lunch experience here almost two years ago. A friend and I stopped by for some drinks and lunch during Valpo Homecoming 2011 and had a great time. I thought the ambiance was perfect- not divey but not overly highbrow- they poured stiff drinks and had good beers and the sandwich selections, including my fish tacos, were really interesting, well made and convenient. Cut to yesterday when my husband and I arranged to meet with some friends we had not seen in awhile after the Valpo b-ball game. We all arrived shortly before three and were seated immediately. Then I noticed that we were given the dinner menu. My husband asked when they switched to the dinner menu and the waiter said 3:00. (Later, when we discussed it with the host, he told us 2:30). Normally, I wouldn't care but the dinner menu at Pikk's has a dearth of sandwiches and is way too fancy for a bar. Also overpriced. This just isn't the kind of place where I would want to get a $27 entree. Sorry. Anyway, we did ask if we could order off the lunch menu, seeing as it was only 3:10 but were denied. OK, we were going to make the best of it and ordered drinks. Then I noticed the "Weekly Specials" on the menu and we decided to get an appetizer that looked interesting off of it while we pondered what else we were going to eat. The waiter (who by the way was really pretty dour and douchey), informed us that NONE of the specials listed on the menu were available. At all. Period. Are you kidding me??? I asked why we were given the menus in the first place if that was the case. He freaked and made the host/manager, Aaron, come over. Aaron was super cool, I'll admit. But he wasn't really able to answer our questions. He apologized for not informing us when we were seated that the specials were not available. But then we got conflicting stories as to why that was. One version was that they "just switched over the menu" and the second was that the chef had a "family emergency." I'm really not sure what the truth was, but both seemed pretty dubious. We asked again if we could order from the lunch menu (wouldn't sandwiches be easier to produce than non-existent specials?). Once again, we were denied. Aaron was very apologetic and offered to comp our drinks before we went elsewhere. We really appreciated that and took him up on it. After leaving a decent tip for the waiter who never returned, we put on our coats and were walking out the door when Aaron stopped us to say that as a gesture of good will, he had taken the liberty of ordering us a couple signature appetizers. He said he really wanted us to come back another time. So, we stayed for those- the fries and the hot pretzel. I have heard good things about the pretzel and it was very tasty. Did not try the fries but they looked good and our friends said they were. I would very definitely come back here-- for lunch. And I would also very definitely recommend that they consider lengthening the lunch time, particularly on weekends. I just don't know too many people who want $27 lamb shanks at 3pm after a basketball game. But maybe I'm the weirdo! Three stars for the past experience and Aaron's valiant efforts yesterday.

On Tuesday, August 16th we had received the worst service ever from a dining est...ablishment! The owner Phil told us to try someone else next time after we initially gave up our table of 6 to a group with a person in a wheel chair. We arrived at 6:30pm and the entrees came at 8:40pm...for only TWO of our party of SIX. The other entrees came out 20 mins after. Bread was never served to our table and we watched three other groups get up and leave without paying because of the horrible service and rude staff. My boyfriend and I approached the owner who told us to try somewhere else next time with no appology or anything close to a credit to our bill. Please no one ever eat here again. This business deserves to be closed ASAP because service to the paying customer is of no importance to them.

I have been here twice since I moved to Valparaiso and have had great experiences both times. The first time, I was there with my family who was visiting from the east coast and we had a great time. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The cheeseburger there is the best I have ever had! Really nice atmosphere at the restaurant too which is always a wonderful plus :) Update 5/2012 - I changed my review from 4 stars to 3 stars based on a recent experience here where they forgot about us. My husband and I called and made reservations for dinner. When we got there, our table wasn't ready so we happily said we'd wait at the bar. The hostess said she would come and get us when our table was ready. The place was really busy - every table full and other people waiting at the bar too. Finally, an hour went by and I saw two parties get seated before us - two parties that got there well after we did. I went to the hostess (same person) to ask what was up and the hostess had no idea who I was and said, "Did you put your name in?" I told her we'd called and made reservations and that she said she would come and get us when our table was ready. She felt really bad and apologized and said they'd get us seated right away, which we were. Then a guy came over to us, maybe the manager, and also apologized. My husband was upset because we were sitting at the bar paying money for beers when we could/should have been sitting at our table a long time ago. He said this and the guy/manager didn't seem to care. Pikk's should have offered us a free round of drinks - or something - to make up for their mistake. But they didn't offer us anything. This made me feel like they didn't care about us. It would have been just a few bucks out of their pocket for a round of drinks or free appetizer or something. People make mistakes - I get it - but the restaurant business is pure customer service. By not offering to do something to make up for their stupid mistake it makes me feel that Pikk's doesn't really care about their customers (or at least they didn't care about us). Won't be going back here anytime soon.

I love PIKKs! It's a fabulous spot to go for a drink and relax on a Saturday night but also a wonderful place for Sunday brunch. The Wednesday night Mexican theme is amazing, BEST guacamole in town! The service is top notch and all of the staff are super friendly and helpful!

What a charming place and I totally disagree with L. R. about the pricing. Sure, Pikk's is a bit pricey for NWI but it is not outrageous. It is owned by Paul LoDuca (Vinci, Adobo Grill). We started with the antipasto appetizer special. There was a generous serving of thick cut prosciutto, some excellent salami, a nice portion of Gorgonzola, chicken bruschetta and the best - cheese cheesecake. All was served on a bed of fresh spinach with a sweet balsamic vinegar and olive oil sauce. It was a large portion and we could have had salad or soup and made a meal of it. Mom had the open faced steak sandwich ($12.99) and I had the burger ($9.99). Both came with fresh cut, slender fries. The flank steak was served rare and had Pikk's own steak sauce drizzled on top. My burger was served with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Despite ordering rare, it came out medium. I made a comment to Mom and the waiter overheard and immediately offered a replacement. I took it and the fresh burger came out rare and very hot. The burger was grilled and one of the best I have had. The wines begin at $7.50 for a generous glass and there is a small, quality selection available. The mini burgers are $1.00 during happy hour 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday and the daily special (if it is available) is half price during the last hour before closing. There are special events the 2nd Thursday of every month. The inside of Pikk's is dark and woody. One wall is all brick. It is not too noisy. It is a challenge to get to the restrooms as you have to pass the open kitchen window where servers are ordering and picking up their meal. The ladies room was nicely decorated. There was plenty of outdoor dining available. Service was excellent - probably the best I have experienced in a long, long time. Pikk's does a brunch on Sunday and dishes begin at $7.99 up to $9.99. We're anxious to return to this nice addition to Valpo.

Woof. I would give it a 4 if the whole menu was fantastic and the menu was a bit cheaper. Here is the trick. Pikk's is good at items that are not fancy. order a fancy expensive item on their menu and it is obvious the chef isnt as focused on that. This is much like ordering a burger at a Chinese eatery. Order up what you would consider bar food and they take that and up the ante. The open face steak sandwhich is their finest, their fries divine and their basic dishes are where it is at. order pad Thai at a tavern? of course it isn't going to be good. Another secret: New years eve is awesome here. No charge! but they add new year's even specials and drinks and stay open and celebrate with you.

Lets put this in perspective. For Valparaiso Indiana it gets 3 or 4 stars. If you are stacking it against Chicago it would receive 2 stars. It is quaint, cozy and makes you feel like you belong. They have a well stocked bar and the bartenders are well versed in making the drinks on the menu, but don't expect anything inspired off the cuff. They are not well versed in mixing even the most rudimentary cocktails. Stick with the menu and you will enjoy a drink. The food is hit or miss like a previous post mentioned. I have been there about 6 to 8 times and seem to enjoy it most when I just share a few appetizers. The blue cheese small burgers are really wonderful. Honestly, you will crave them once you've had them, and return wanting more...and then get lulled into thinking you should explore more of the menu since those damn burgers were so good...and that's where you will be disappointed. The steaks are overpriced and just "ok", all sides are a la carte and equally "ok". Fun place to catch live music with friends, have a drink and share apps. Recommend the mini burgers, tuna poke, fries, table side shrimp cocktail is good-but way overpriced for such small shrimp, the steak salad was alright too. The steak, chops, salmon and pasta dishes were just "ok", especially for the price.

Overpriced and disappointing. Steak salad made with napa cabbage revolting. Bitter. 3 tiny slivers of steak. Why is it so expensive??? $70 for two. I recently was in Chicago and dined on fabulous cuisine for $20. People in Valpo obviously have no idea what good grub is. Or maybe I watch too much Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. First time there. Will never go back. Every beer my husband ordered, they didn't have it. My problem is I always compare pubs to the Nine Irish Brothers in West Lafayette which is fabulous..all food is amazing and inexpensive. Will not go back. That is two downtown Valpo restaurants I have tried so far and both have been overpriced and rubbish.

Not impressed at all. My dining club chose this place to eat last month. The food was okay. Not fantastic, not awful. The price floored every one of us. Not one of us will go back. Not sure what they're trying to accomplish but soup shouldn't cost so much. Oh, they also charged if you got pasta and wanted garlic bread with it. The garlic bread was $2.00 a slice. My goodness, they must think they're in New York City because I've paid those kind of prices there. This is not New York City for God's sake. ** As an aside - I want to add that my dinner club went for dinner. We had actual entrees. Had we gotten sandwiches and burgers, our bill would have been much less I'm sure. I don't know about Vinci or Adobo Grill, but I can tell you my last dinner in Vail cost less.

I had the WORST experience at PIKKs ever!! We got there and they had ran out of bread and chicken on a tuesday night. We got there at 6:30 and did not get out food for 2 hours. the food came partly cold and it took another 18 minutes for them to bring the rest of the party of 5's food. I spoke with the owner twice and he told me if I don't like it then to go somewhere else. The owner does not know how to treat people including his own paying customers. He told me that since our bill was only 100 dollars we have nothing to complain about. Please do not waste your time or money on this place in Valpo. I am not one to complain but this was by far the worst place/service I have ever had in my life.

We had a wonderful experience in the private nook as we celebrated three family birthdays. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The bill was stiff but the menu had unique options we really enjoyed. I especially loved the Lobster-miso soup with tofu as well as the mini blue cheese stuffed burgers. Everyone loved their food. Steaks were a little underdone, even for being ordered med rare, then when we asked for one to be cooked a little more, it took forever. The service is friendly and pleasant but slow. An extra side was ordered after everything else was served...but it never came. Busing leaves something to be desired as well as drink refill attentiveness. It was pretty busy for a late Monday evening in April, but cleared out around 9pm. We had a wonderful time, enjoyed the unique dishes, others were just okay. Loved having the private area, made a reservation about a week ahead of time. We'll definitely go back but we knew what to order based on other Yelp reviews and also knew we would probably wait a while for our service. In their defense, they may have thought we were waiting on more people or that we wanted a long leisurely dinner. We'll go back and I'll update my review. Until them, I would recommend giving it a try! It's not cheep but I didn't find it outrageous at all. But don't go if you want a $20 meal, it's a la carte, so plan to spend $40/person without desserts and minimal drinks. Nice atmosphere. If we did not have the party nook, I would have not enjoyed the nose level or lack of privacy, but that's just me. I wish there was a 3.5 but I'm going to give Pikk's 4 stars, but it's a soft four, waiting on my next visit :)

We came here on the recommendation of a friend. It's a cool cafe in the midst of a downtown that's being revitalized. The server came up to our table and asked what we wanted to order. When I asked him about the special, the Juicy Lucy, he almost started drooling and his demeanor changed. All of a sudden, he was excited and proclaimed that the Juicy Lucy was so good he had ordered it himself a few times. The Juicy Lucy is a hamburger, and a great hamburger I might add, where the key is a tomato bacon jam they spread on it. I'm serious... tomato bacon jam. Not only is the burger juicy and spiced perfectly but the jam gives it a sweet salty taste that is just killer. Along with the search for the perfect BBQ, I have had my share of burgers searching for the best burger. This burger is a special order through the month of June but I'm telling you if you are in the Valpo area, I would recommend ordering it!

Made a reservation about a week before and the man on the phone was very nice and helpful. When I dropped off balloons and a cake a couple hours before dinner they were also once again very nice about everything .. Oh Pikk's...how much I want to like you. Sadly, every single time we go the food gets significantly worse. The last visit was truly our last as it was the 3rd visit in a row where food had to be sent back to the kitchen. On a busy Friday night we took a friend from out of town to Pikk's for dinner. My husband ordered ribs, my friend (who is pregnant) ordered a burger well done, and I had the burger of the month medium rare. In addition we ordered potato skins. The skins used to be 3 large potato halves stuffed with steak and cheese. They now apparently take 2 halves and cut them into strips but charge more money. Nice. When the food arrived the ribs were so burnt they were inedible. My friends burger was raw in the middle and mine was overly well done. We returned all 3 items and when they came back they were done properly. The manager came by to apologize and said he was going to "take care of us"...which turned out to mean a large piece of red velvet cake that had freezer burn. When we commented that we didn't really want the red velvet cake and that it wasn't very good, and that one piece of cake to apologize for 3 returned meals wasn't really enough, we were told that the cake is their signature item and was all they were willing to offer. To make matters worse my friend and I both had some serious stomach issues for the next 24 hours that can only be attributed to our dinner at Pikk's. Perhaps in the future Pikk's will go back to full orders of well prepared food that is priced decently and offer better customer service. When we first moved to Valpo 4 years ago this restaurant was our favorite. Now I wouldn't send anyone there to eat. ever. Would it surprise the manager to know that while waiting for a table at another restaurant in downtown Valpo on Friday we met a couple who immediately brought up how they have had a number of bad experiences with Pikk's and will never return? It didn't surprise us in the least. Skip this place and head anywhere else.

I was worried when I read some of the reviews for this restaurant but my dad was so excited to try Pikk's for the first time that we went for his birthday a few days ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant lived up to most of the reviews... The dinner started with a surly waiter and freezing air temps inside the restaurant. The decor is very pretty and quite cozy. The food was just ok, but for the price and the fact that it took us almost an hour to get it after we ordered, we expected it to be much better. The pork chop and steak tacos received high praise at the table. The steak failed to please. The bbq ribs received mixed reviews. Two of us ordered them and neither of us liked them, but the next day my mom was eating them as left overs and thought they were good. It's getting 2 stars because the manager was very nice and apologetic for our wait. Plus, it also appeared that if you were regulars, you got tremendous service. I saw several of them being hugged and helped right away--the waiter even left our table in the middle of serving us to help his regulars. If I decide to try it again and like it better, I will definitely update my review, but right now, I'm in no hurry to go back.

We've been to Pikks a few times, and today I went for lunch with my family. While the food is good and the service is decent, I do have a complaint. Pikks advertises on a local fundraising card for 10% off of lunches on Fridays and Saturday's. When we tried to use the card, the discount amount was for one lunch meal instead of the entire food portion of the bill. Granted, the additional discount was less than $3, but the point being that we have used the card at other restaurants before, and the discount is a percentage off the entire bill (excluding alcohol). After I got home, I phoned Pikks to talk with the manager. He told me it was for "cardholder" only. So for the fact that I couldn't get a $3 discount for my $40 lunch lost him a customer. He ended our conversation by saying "too bad" and hanging up on me. Great customer service...NOT. Go eat down the street at Bon Femme, Bistro 157, Margaritas, or Valley Kitchen. We eat out a lot and will give continued business to these other downtown restaurants with much better service.

Went on a Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't very crowded - lots of empty seats, no line, and employees socializing amongst themselves - but for some reason it took my boyfriend and I 10-15 minutes to be seated. Several employees walked past us without offering to seat us. After being seated, it took another 25 minutes for our order to be taken. I don't even know why we stayed. When the server came, she was very kind and did her best to meet our needs. The food was also quite good. So overall, two stars. One for my food and one for the nice server. Otherwise, I'll never set foot in that place again. What a disappointment.

The steaks are always reliable and my wife always enjoys their fish and French martinis. I also often use it for business lunches. In summary, one of the best run and versatile restaurants we have in Valparaiso. The pricing is very fair for what they are offering.

I'm kind of surprised reading the reviews of this place. I don't think it's the greatest restaurant in Valpo; but it's really good, the service is great, and they pour a generous cocktail. During our meal, 3 different people came by to check and make sure we were happy- that alone is worth 4 stars. So this place is in downtown, right on the Square. Given that fact, you know the competition is fierce, so these places know how to bring their "A" game if they want to survive. Pikk's menu is somewhat small, but they do have a lot of daily specials and they have some unique craft cocktails. I was thoroughly impressed with my rye old fashioned- this is a delightful cocktail that packs a punch. My date had the bourbon lemonade (made with Bulleit, I believe) and it was a hefty cocktail as well. I had the flank steak sandwich (open faced) and my date had the special fried chicken. The food was solid, the cooks definitely know what they're doing. The flank was nicely cooked medium rare and was good. The fried chicken was decent, the mashed red potatoes and corn on the cob were the start of the show. I'd suggest brining the chicken or stuffing the cavities of the bird with herbs or something before frying to get a little more flavor, but the batter was delish. Overall our service was awesome. I really appreciated that they checked on us often, the food and drinks were delivered fast, and everything was accurate. Definitely a four-star experience.

It is a shame that I feel I have to give Pikk's a poor review. The food has always been good but the customer service has declined so profoundly that I doubt we'll go back. Last night was the second time in a row that we stood at the entrance for a solid five minutes as wait staff whizzed by without eye contact or a single word (apparently there is no host or hostess). Once we were seated and the bus boy set our table, it was another 10 minutes or so before the waitress came by to see if we had any questions. We did... "Could we see a menu?!" We were already too frustrated with the service so we left. I hope you have better luck!

Pikk's is trying very hard to be a five star restaurant. The prices are high and the staff are certainly attentive. The food is so so, served in gigantic portions. Quantity however does not make up for a lack of quality. The burgers are the size of your head. I didn't eat one, although my friends did. The beers, which I experienced, are overpriced. Tasty, certainly. Just not with $13 a bottle.

My turkey club was lacking in flavor and the bread, despite being toasted, was wet and crumbly. Go to Denny's by I-94 in Portage. It's the same quality food, same quality service, and the prices at Denny's are a lot better. Denny's just doesn't serve beer. There are plenty of good restaurants on the square in Valpo. Go to any one of them within walking distance of Pikk's Tavern and you will get better food and service.

We had a great time with my grandparents. My grandmother's mini burgers were very overcooked- my boyfriend just gave her a piece of fish and ate her order even though they were black. I get the feeling that if she had sent it back they would have been nice about it, but it wasn't a big deal. He likes crispy meat anyway. I had the chopped salad with steak and it was great! The portion size was huge, very filling! Their fish is excellent, I suggest it. My grandfather ordered a burger- he said it wasn't anything to write home about but it was acceptable and he ate it all. I also tried a Pink Cadillac and my boyfriend got a Dragon's Milk beer. I would suggest either, however the drinks are pretty expensive even for a bar so be aware that even for a bar the prices are a bit steep. All in all the food was adequate, nothing more or less. The service was what blew us away, everyone was extremely helpful, polite, and smiling.

Went here once before for lunch - impressed with the sandwiches, but service was slow. My family is in town this weekend, and they were the only restaurant that could quickly accommodate a party of 7 without a reservation, so I figured we'd give it a second shot. Omg. My dad's won't stop talking about how fantastic his ribs were. My uncle's burger looked amazing. And my tuna ceviche was absolutely outstanding. Service was great - everyone was so friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable and no one left hungry. Pikks, you've won me back. Keep up the good work.

We rode in from Hammond and wanted to try something different. As we were walking around downtown we saw a place with a lot of outdoor seating and decided to go there. The place is very clean and the employees are very kind! Took care of us very quickly and efficiently. The food was delicious. We had the hamburgers and they were fantastic! Pricing was very appropriate for how delicious the food was. They also have a pretty wide variety of beer and wine also. I will be definitely coming back in the near future.

I would have given this place more stars a couple years ago, but after being here so many times the place just gets boring. I think the menu has stayed the same since it opened. They may have changed a couple food items, but basically it's the same small menu every single time you go in. There is nothing on the menu that is just fabulous! I think we have probably tried everything on the menu...it's all good, but not great. Having said that...the service is usually good. The atmosphere is nice. Has outdoor dining in the summer. They do have a really good red velvet cake for dessert, but it's a hit or miss. Sometimes it taste very dry, but if you get it on a good day, it's fabulous!!!

Boy, did we pikk the wrong place. This place was a waste of our money and time. The Burger of the Month had a patty that was half the size of the bun. And the bun wasn't even a bun, but rather rye toast slices instead. The mayonnaise was all of 1 squiggle absorbed into the toast. The onion rings were ladened in oil and they were so huge that the breading was doughy and chewy. You could taste the oil. They were the worst onion rings ever. We sat in the booth and liked the ambiance, but the chef or somebody kept standing by the booths. It felt like he had nothing to do in the back kitchen but listen to our conversation and laughter. We were the only customers dining. How annoying and with 4 hours left till closing. As soon as we stood up to leave, he was on that table to clean it like vultures are on a dead carcass.

I've tried this restaurant several times this year and my last two visits have been TERRIBLE. Both times the food took nearly 45 minutes to arrive and arrived cold. I'm not sure if it was a kitchen issue or wait staff issue, but all in all, I'm not sure I'll be back.

Over-priced Taco Bell. Waiter thought it was a good idea to argue with us for 10 minutes over how to separate the checks until told to stop (she would not stop!!). Pikk's has a consistent problem with bad and poorly trained waitstaff. To their credit, they did respond and turn off the awful muzak blasting outside. Charges $4.50 for 25¢ of root beer syrup, no refill. Charged $9 for beer (no prices on the menu-for good reason). Mexican special was anything but special- bland, unappetizing fare, plated bare-bones and pretty much tasteless. A chef's shame! Save your dough and go find "Moe's". Better yet, Meditrina is a much better option for better food in the area. That or hike over to Miller Bakery Cafe, or to Gamba's for more class and better fare. For burgers, go to tiny Octave in Chesterton where you can get a gourmet burger and a beer for the price of just a beer at Pikk's, and without the attitude! We were eating at Bon Femme, but got some "sponge chicken" last time, so that is not really a good option at those prices. I have not eaten at KFC since it became Yum Brands, but maybe we should give it a shot- what's there to loose with what's being served up in Valpo?

What a pleasant surprise!!! Stopped into Pikks on a whim. Had some errands in Valpo and needed some dinner. We chose Pikks because quite frankly we got a parking spot right in front. We started with the Scottish Egg for an appetizer. YUM! Perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg although it could've been a tad runnier per my husband. I loved it!! Husband and I split the tavern burger with mushrooms on the side. Perfectly cooked burger!!! Medium rare, juicy, loads of flavor, didn't even need ketchup kind of burger. LOVED every bite. Fries and homemade pickle on the side was delicious too. Glad we split the burger because it was just the right amount for us. Fantastic service!! Prompt, courteous, friendly, and efficient. Bravo!!! Can't wait to go back to try more items!!!

We were looking for a place to eat lunch on a Sunday afternoon with friends from out of town. We chose Pikk's and figured you can't go wrong when ordering sandwiches. We were mistaken. My Ruben was made with the end of the loaf of bread (the heal) and included 1 slice of corned beef. The other sandwiches were just as skimpy and had no taste. We should have stayed home and made our own sandwiches and saved 80.00.

Had a good burger and fish tacos from this place. That's where the positive stops. Our waitress could have cared less about us. I wrote a review on Yelp that Pikk's had removed because I mentioned a waitresses name. Well, now I'll tell you that if you're young and don't look like you have money you'll be treated accordingly (like trash). Pikk's is notorious for horrendous service. Think I'm joking? Look at ALL THE FILTERED REVIEWS on this establishment. Waited over 30 minutes just to get our check in an uncrowded restaurant so the waitress could pad her tips to individuals ordering drinks. Once the hundred dollar bill came out to pay we were best buddies though? Right? Seriously don't give this establishment your money. There are tons of places in Valpo that have better food and haven't paid to have their bad Yelp reviews filtered so they can look like a somewhat reputable establishment.

I've been to Pikk's several times. In fact, my wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. It can be very, very good. The last couple of times I've been here, though, it seems as if it is hit and miss. The one thing I can say, however, that is always very good, is the service. I went there a few weeks ago for a family birthday dinner, and got the roasted half chicken with a twice baked potato. The chicken was decent. It was fully cooked and juicy, but the skin was pretty rubbery. The twice baked potato was not as hot as it should have been. Then, last night, I went again, for another family birthday dinner. I got the Tuesday night special, which is buttermilk fried chicken. It is half of a chicken, which comes with smashed potatoes and a side. I got broccoli. The chicken was decent. Again, it was fully cooked and juicy. But, the breading... it had NO flavor to it at all. It didn't seem they put any seasoning in the breading mixture. I had to put a little bit of salt on them to get the flavor up. Also, the breading was entirely too thick. It was basically the same as taking each piece of chicken, smashing a biscuit on each side of it, and then frying it. The smashed potatoes were good - but, again, not very hot. The broccoli was well cooked - not mushy but not too raw - but, it was so water logged. You bit in to a piece and got a flood of broccoli flavored water. I was dipping a few pieces in the hollandaise sauce that comes with it, and at the end there was a pool of water on top. My wife got a half slab of ribs, which I tasted. They were alright. Not a lot of meat on the portion she got, though. Too much BBQ sauce as far as I was concerned. If you live around here and want good ribs, go to Wagner's. Pikk's can be a great place, though. Anytime I've gotten a steak, it has been very good. It seems if you stay in the restaurant's wheelhouse - steaks and baked potato - you end up with a very good meal. Start straying from it, however... and, in my opinion, you CAN be disappointed. On the up side, however... if it's your birthday, you get a free slice of red-velvet cake. Which, is very good. As far as a dessert goes, I've never been disappointed by the creme brulee. First off, it's huge. Second, it has blueberries in it. Third, it comes with a rather thick brulee to it. It's very good.

Boy oh boy has this place let themselves go ! What in the world happened guys ? Why have the delicious, crunchy fries evolved to being overgreased, dark, limp potato chunks ? It seems that only this past summer we were enoying lunches on your outdoor patio and next thing you know, this unpleasant transformation happens! For instance, who thought that sneaking the fried greasy ham in place of turkey into a sandwich would go unnoticed ? Including everyone's meals and drinks on one bill is also always appreciated -especially when its a party of at least eight people and the waitress simply lets the request for separate checks drop by the wayside. I guess they wanted us to practice our math skills that day. Get yourselves together guys. Whatever you're doing isnt working so maybe radical self improvement should be on the agenda next.

I've been to Pikk's a few times, and I'm always pretty impressed. Their drink list is limited, but they are willing to make anything if they have the necessary ingredients. Everything is very fresh! The Pikk's Fries for appetizers are really good, and you get an option of three sauces for them (try the wasabi mayo, it's amazing). I got the shepherd's pie, and it was easily one of the best I've had that wasn't homemade. The dessert I had was a peanut butter pie, which made me want to die; it was so good. The service was great, and didn't mind that we were such a large group. This is definitely a place to go if you want something classy but comfortable.

From Schererville we can make it to a spot downtown to eat in about the same time as it takes us to get to the square in Valpo-- so we rarely choose Valpo. Pikk's gives me reason to believe that there's hope for great upscale bar food/ steaks in NWI. This was a great place for a weeknight birthday celebration- the house aged porterhouse was superb and the menu interesting enough to bring us back. Not to missed are the martinis and appetizers as well as the desserts; you can eat really well here without being ridiculously spendy. Can't wait to try their famous burgers next.

I went here to celebrate my graduation because I wanted an amazing steak dinner and had heard great things. The steak reminded me a lot of one you get at the Sizzler. It was over-cooked and dry. Parts of it were charred. I ordered it medium rare but if it was a good cut of steak, even cooked medium well/well done it wouldn't have been that bad. We ordered the chocolate cake and it came out still frozen inside - even though when we ordered it the waitress said it's always made fresh. The service was pretty decent but the food was awful for the price. Not going back!

My family reserved the private room downstairs. It was a mixture of mostly adults, but some kids too. They had about three waiters for us. One guy was, at one point, extremely rude to the kids to the point that every adult gave him the side-eye. The next time he showed up, he was over-the-top kid-friendly. Bi-polar, obviously. Our main waiter was super nice and super friendly. Everything regarding the food was good, except for the Mongolian beef that my mom ordered. First of all, Mongolian beef......at Pikks?! Really?! It was the only Asian dish on the menu. They should probably cut that out because my mom had a big-ass piece of fatty tendon in her meal. Gross............. Beyond the bad food for my mom and weirdo server-tude towards my little cousins, I like this place. I like the atmosphere and the food.

I really like Pikks, good place to bring family when they are in town. The building is really cool and has some history to go along w/ it. I don't know why some are saying the service stinks. I've never had a bad server, in fact, someone is filling my water glass every 5 min. The food is a little pricy, but better than going to some chain restaurant......Changed my vote from 4 to 3....sandwiches and burgers are always great, but a couple times I've ordered the chicken and pork and they were dry.

This place is usually very good, but the menu isn't particularly cheap so if you order the wrong thing you're going to want to burn that mother down. Luckily you have me here to tell you what to order, the open face steak sandwich. Middle of the menu as far as price range; top of the pack as far as taste. Their steaks are pretty good too, cooked well, no complaints. My girlfriend is a hamburger maven and she thinks they do it pretty well. Cool bar, definitely one of the best in Valpo. Pretty solid beer selection, although I wish they had more 3 Floyds, given the close proximity and sheer awesomeness of the brewery. Good mixed drinks as well, I have yet to be disappointed. A little bit steep for a law student, but I get by with a little help from my friends. I would not recommend any of the pork options, and some of their sides are lacking but as far as Valpo dining goes, this is one of the many great options. I like the atmosphere, it smells of mahogany and leather bound books. Not too stuffy but it is somewhat upscale. They also have a downstairs which seats quite a few people, so don't be turned away by a busy looking dining room. This place is horrible. The manager spent the entire time we were there circling our table because 1 of our 7 guests happened to be running late. We spent nearly $200 there, yet this guy thought it was appropriate to harrass us. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy as the chicken was mediocre and not worth the hype. For all the choices Valpo has, this place is not worth it. The wait staff was friendly though.

I have been to Pikk's probably 10 times. I WANT to like it but I just never have any luck with the food. The service is friendly and the atmospere is cool. The outdoor dining deck is lovely on a warm summer night. The cocktails ARE good. On the weekends, in the summer, they often have good local musicians. Like I said before "I WANT to like Pikks" I have had the steak sandwich and it tastes like beef jerky. The Pad Thai, in the words of my boyfriend was "the worst I've ever had". I was downtown and ordered fried pickles off of the Eat Up, Wine Down menu and when they arrived they had a tremendous amount of breading and upon biting into it, I realized it was a sweet pickle. Now, of course, not liking sweet pickles is a matter of taste...but it would be a nice thing for a server to let you know. The vast majority of my friends won't even go there because the food items they have tried, haven't been good either. Things that I have liked: shrimp cocktail (they mix your choice of 3 sauces at your table), tuna tartar, and the guacamole. It's few and far between.

They have a separate gluten free menu and gluten free beer; however, I've had experiences where some servers have been very knowledgeable of gluten and others knew nothing. The food at this place has been hit or miss for me since we started going here back in 2008. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times it is really blah. Case in point, I've ordered the chicken alfredo and it's been really delicious, but one time the sauce was practically just milk - yuck - and once it was brought to me without the chicken. When I asked why they apologized and brought out a bowl of plain chicken in that I could mix in myself. Oh, and one time they brought this dish to me with a piece of bread sitting ON TOP of the pasta, which goes to show that the server didn't know anything about gluten or else she would not have brought me the dish like that when I specifically ordered it gluten free. And no, I'm sorry, but those with Celiac can't just pick it off or eat around it. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to make a new batch. I finally stopped ordering the chicken alfredo. The salmon has always been really good though and they have Greens gluten free beer, which I have a hard time finding anywhere else. The atmosphere and location are great too, and the staff have always been friendly.

This is my go-to place to take someone who you are just meeting. It's not over the top but still maintains a high level of class from its menu and employees. It looks like a hole in the wall but always surprises everyone (in a good way) once the get inside. I recommend to pretty much any type of person. They always do it right here.

We went here for the first time a couple of months ago and sat outside on the patio. The staff was super friendly, helpful and efficient. My husband and I both had the fish and chips and, I have to say, it was the best fish and chips we have had in North America. I don't say this lightly as we used to live in England, the home of fish and chips. This is a great little place in downtown valpo...I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back very soon!

Pikk's Tavern has a comfortable atmosphere with a nice (yet small) bar area and great food. Like others have mentioned, it is a bit spendy considering it's located in good ol' Valpo, but for a nice dinner in town, I recommend it. If you're in the mood for a fresh salad, the chopped salad with green goddess dressing is a hit. One my my favorite courses, which Pikk's prepares quite well, is dessert. I went to Pikk's last month with a friend. We shared two desserts after our meal: red velvet cake with a cream cheese icing and a creme brulee. Both desserts were amazing! Follow that up with a famtastic cup of espresso, and I was set. I will be returning.

Took my girlfriend for dinner and it was a very bad experience. I've had multiple servers before working the same table, but the problem here was they didn't communicate and continually dropped the ball. First off it took them 10 minutes after they seated us before asking if we wanted anything to drink. We got the fries appetizer, and the sauces are the only reason this is getting a star. Apparently it was fried chicken night, so we decided to get that and a burger. Although it was a decent sized portion, the chicken was severely overcooked and tasted like burnt grease. Even worse, the first piece I grabbed was actually cold, and it was obvious it was left over from a previous order because the other pieces were ripping hot from being overlooked. My burger came out Pittsburg rare (and tasteless) after ordering it medium. The best part was when we were waiting for drinks and other things during our meal, we could see the servers sitting at the tables in the back right eating instead of doing their job. I've worked in many restaurants, and in each one (and from speaking with others) eating in front of the guests while you are working is unacceptable, and considering it was taking away from the dining experience I was paying for, I'm inclined to agree. With so many places to choose from with good food and service, I don't think I'll ever be back.

I stumbled across this little restaurant walking around Valparaiso. We only stopped in to have one drink and to use the washroom. As soon as we sat down we met one of their regulars who bought us a few rounds and insisted on eating his pretzel he just ordered. It was the best pretzel I ever had & it came with 2 dipping sauces, cheese & sweet and sour. They have a cool private dining area in the basement, great for parties! If I am ever in Valparaiso again I would stop in and try a few more things on the menu.

My family visited Pikk's Tavern to celebrate. We were a mixed group of adults and children, 8 in total. The staff were extremely helpful in getting us a suitable table for our group, and remained very attentive and helpful throughout our meal. Admittedly we went on a Monday night and they were slow, but you can't fake genuine kindness and sense of humor--the staff was simply great. The food itself was good to excellent. The Oysters Rockefeller were very tasty and not overcooked as many restaurants prepare them. The Tuna Tartar was also quite tasty, but not a very large portion for the price. We had a variety of dishes from pasta to Fillet, and all were quite nice. I personally had the ribs, which were surprisingly good for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in barbecue. What really impressed me was the sides; the aug-rotten potatoes were simply amazing! Crispy topped with a bit of a bite from cheddar (or another sharp cheese). Very tasty lemon asparagus, better than average french fries--the sides made the meal. My wife wanted an entree of the mac-and-cheese (which is actually a side) and they happily prepared that for her, which made her happy. The pricing isn't intimidating at all from my perspective, but I live in Chicago not NW Indiana. For Valpo, it's probably on the high end of what you'd expect to pay for steaks and such, but the service quality, decor, and tastiness of the food warrant it. I expect we'll be back soon.

Needed a place to spend a 'date night' with the boyfriend in Valpo. Searched around Yelp and found this place. Overall it was a pretty great decision. Took them a bit longer to seat just the two of us. The decor and service was wonderful. The food was pretty good too. I had the shrimp cooked crab and the boyfriend ordered the pork chop. Perfect amount of food to fill us up without having to bring home leftovers. I would definitely go here again the next time we find ourselves around Valparaiso.

Overpriced for what you get...especially the drinks (yikes!!). Been here a few times now, and probably won't go back again. Last time, the service was absolutely awful. We waited 20 minutes just to get some lousy mustard, and the manager was quite rude about it. In fact, it was the manager who hastily plopped our meals down on the table, then scurried away in a flash without asking if we needed anything else (like mustard, ketchup, etc). Our waitress disappeared for over 30 minutes. Sitting there with empty drinks, and couldn't get the condiments we needed. I was ready to walk out. The food here is average at best. For these prices, I'd expect MUCH MUCH better.

I'm only giving it three stars instead of two because I had one good lunch experience here almost two years ago. A friend and I stopped by for some drinks and lunch during Valpo Homecoming 2011 and had a great time. I thought the ambiance was perfect- not divey but not overly highbrow- they poured stiff drinks and had good beers and the sandwich selections, including my fish tacos, were really interesting, well made and convenient. Cut to yesterday when my husband and I arranged to meet with some friends we had not seen in awhile after the Valpo b-ball game. We all arrived shortly before three and were seated immediately. Then I noticed that we were given the dinner menu. My husband asked when they switched to the dinner menu and the waiter said 3:00. (Later, when we discussed it with the host, he told us 2:30). Normally, I wouldn't care but the dinner menu at Pikk's has a dearth of sandwiches and is way too fancy for a bar. Also overpriced. This just isn't the kind of place where I would want to get a $27 entree. Sorry. Anyway, we did ask if we could order off the lunch menu, seeing as it was only 3:10 but were denied. OK, we were going to make the best of it and ordered drinks. Then I noticed the "Weekly Specials" on the menu and we decided to get an appetizer that looked interesting off of it while we pondered what else we were going to eat. The waiter (who by the way was really pretty dour and douchey), informed us that NONE of the specials listed on the menu were available. At all. Period. Are you kidding me??? I asked why we were given the menus in the first place if that was the case. He freaked and made the host/manager, Aaron, come over. Aaron was super cool, I'll admit. But he wasn't really able to answer our questions. He apologized for not informing us when we were seated that the specials were not available. But then we got conflicting stories as to why that was. One version was that they "just switched over the menu" and the second was that the chef had a "family emergency." I'm really not sure what the truth was, but both seemed pretty dubious. We asked again if we could order from the lunch menu (wouldn't sandwiches be easier to produce than non-existent specials?). Once again, we were denied. Aaron was very apologetic and offered to comp our drinks before we went elsewhere. We really appreciated that and took him up on it. After leaving a decent tip for the waiter who never returned, we put on our coats and were walking out the door when Aaron stopped us to say that as a gesture of good will, he had taken the liberty of ordering us a couple signature appetizers. He said he really wanted us to come back another time. So, we stayed for those- the fries and the hot pretzel. I have heard good things about the pretzel and it was very tasty. Did not try the fries but they looked good and our friends said they were. I would very definitely come back here-- for lunch. And I would also very definitely recommend that they consider lengthening the lunch time, particularly on weekends. I just don't know too many people who want $27 lamb shanks at 3pm after a basketball game. But maybe I'm the weirdo! Three stars for the past experience and Aaron's valiant efforts yesterday.

On Tuesday, August 16th we had received the worst service ever from a dining est...ablishment! The owner Phil told us to try someone else next time after we initially gave up our table of 6 to a group with a person in a wheel chair. We arrived at 6:30pm and the entrees came at 8:40pm...for only TWO of our party of SIX. The other entrees came out 20 mins after. Bread was never served to our table and we watched three other groups get up and leave without paying because of the horrible service and rude staff. My boyfriend and I approached the owner who told us to try somewhere else next time with no appology or anything close to a credit to our bill. Please no one ever eat here again. This business deserves to be closed ASAP because service to the paying customer is of no importance to them.

I have been here twice since I moved to Valparaiso and have had great experiences both times. The first time, I was there with my family who was visiting from the east coast and we had a great time. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The cheeseburger there is the best I have ever had! Really nice atmosphere at the restaurant too which is always a wonderful plus :) Update 5/2012 - I changed my review from 4 stars to 3 stars based on a recent experience here where they forgot about us. My husband and I called and made reservations for dinner. When we got there, our table wasn't ready so we happily said we'd wait at the bar. The hostess said she would come and get us when our table was ready. The place was really busy - every table full and other people waiting at the bar too. Finally, an hour went by and I saw two parties get seated before us - two parties that got there well after we did. I went to the hostess (same person) to ask what was up and the hostess had no idea who I was and said, "Did you put your name in?" I told her we'd called and made reservations and that she said she would come and get us when our table was ready. She felt really bad and apologized and said they'd get us seated right away, which we were. Then a guy came over to us, maybe the manager, and also apologized. My husband was upset because we were sitting at the bar paying money for beers when we could/should have been sitting at our table a long time ago. He said this and the guy/manager didn't seem to care. Pikk's should have offered us a free round of drinks - or something - to make up for their mistake. But they didn't offer us anything. This made me feel like they didn't care about us. It would have been just a few bucks out of their pocket for a round of drinks or free appetizer or something. People make mistakes - I get it - but the restaurant business is pure customer service. By not offering to do something to make up for their stupid mistake it makes me feel that Pikk's doesn't really care about their customers (or at least they didn't care about us). Won't be going back here anytime soon.

What a charming place and I totally disagree with L. R. about the pricing. Sure, Pikk's is a bit pricey for NWI but it is not outrageous. It is owned by Paul LoDuca (Vinci, Adobo Grill). We started with the antipasto appetizer special. There was a generous serving of thick cut prosciutto, some excellent salami, a nice portion of Gorgonzola, chicken bruschetta and the best - cheese cheesecake. All was served on a bed of fresh spinach with a sweet balsamic vinegar and olive oil sauce. It was a large portion and we could have had salad or soup and made a meal of it. Mom had the open faced steak sandwich ($12.99) and I had the burger ($9.99). Both came with fresh cut, slender fries. The flank steak was served rare and had Pikk's own steak sauce drizzled on top. My burger was served with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Despite ordering rare, it came out medium. I made a comment to Mom and the waiter overheard and immediately offered a replacement. I took it and the fresh burger came out rare and very hot. The burger was grilled and one of the best I have had. The wines begin at $7.50 for a generous glass and there is a small, quality selection available. The mini burgers are $1.00 during happy hour 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday and the daily special (if it is available) is half price during the last hour before closing. There are special events the 2nd Thursday of every month. The inside of Pikk's is dark and woody. One wall is all brick. It is not too noisy. It is a challenge to get to the restrooms as you have to pass the open kitchen window where servers are ordering and picking up their meal. The ladies room was nicely decorated. There was plenty of outdoor dining available. Service was excellent - probably the best I have experienced in a long, long time. Pikk's does a brunch on Sunday and dishes begin at $7.99 up to $9.99. We're anxious to return to this nice addition to Valpo.

Woof. I would give it a 4 if the whole menu was fantastic and the menu was a bit cheaper. Here is the trick. Pikk's is good at items that are not fancy. order a fancy expensive item on their menu and it is obvious the chef isnt as focused on that. This is much like ordering a burger at a Chinese eatery. Order up what you would consider bar food and they take that and up the ante. The open face steak sandwhich is their finest, their fries divine and their basic dishes are where it is at. order pad Thai at a tavern? of course it isn't going to be good. Another secret: New years eve is awesome here. No charge! but they add new year's even specials and drinks and stay open and celebrate with you.

Lets put this in perspective. For Valparaiso Indiana it gets 3 or 4 stars. If you are stacking it against Chicago it would receive 2 stars. It is quaint, cozy and makes you feel like you belong. They have a well stocked bar and the bartenders are well versed in making the drinks on the menu, but don't expect anything inspired off the cuff. They are not well versed in mixing even the most rudimentary cocktails. Stick with the menu and you will enjoy a drink. The food is hit or miss like a previous post mentioned. I have been there about 6 to 8 times and seem to enjoy it most when I just share a few appetizers. The blue cheese small burgers are really wonderful. Honestly, you will crave them once you've had them, and return wanting more...and then get lulled into thinking you should explore more of the menu since those damn burgers were so good...and that's where you will be disappointed. The steaks are overpriced and just "ok", all sides are a la carte and equally "ok". Fun place to catch live music with friends, have a drink and share apps. Recommend the mini burgers, tuna poke, fries, table side shrimp cocktail is good-but way overpriced for such small shrimp, the steak salad was alright too. The steak, chops, salmon and pasta dishes were just "ok", especially for the price.

I recently was in Chicago and dined on fabulous cuisine for $20. People in Valpo obviously have no idea what good grub is. Or maybe I watch too much Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. First time there. Will never go back. Every beer my husband ordered, they didn't have it. My problem is I always compare pubs to the Nine Irish Brothers in West Lafayette which is fabulous..all food is amazing and inexpensive. Will not go back. That is two downtown Valpo restaurants I have tried so far and both have been overpriced and rubbish.

Not impressed at all. My dining club chose this place to eat last month. The food was okay. Not fantastic, not awful. The price floored every one of us. Not one of us will go back. Not sure what they're trying to accomplish but soup shouldn't cost so much. Oh, they also charged if you got pasta and wanted garlic bread with it. The garlic bread was $2.00 a slice. My goodness, they must think they're in New York City because I've paid those kind of prices there. This is not New York City for God's sake. ** As an aside - I want to add that my dinner club went for dinner. We had actual entrees. Had we gotten sandwiches and burgers, our bill would have been much less I'm sure. I don't know about Vinci or Adobo Grill, but I can tell you my last dinner in Vail cost less.

I had the WORST experience at PIKKs ever!! We got there and they had ran out of bread and chicken on a tuesday night. We got there at 6:30 and did not get out food for 2 hours. the food came partly cold and it took another 18 minutes for them to bring the rest of the party of 5's food. I spoke with the owner twice and he told me if I don't like it then to go somewhere else. The owner does not know how to treat people including his own paying customers. He told me that since our bill was only 100 dollars we have nothing to complain about. Please do not waste your time or money on this place in Valpo. I am not one to complain but this was by far the worst place/service I have ever had in my life.

We had a wonderful experience in the private nook as we celebrated three family birthdays. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The bill was stiff but the menu had unique options we really enjoyed. I especially loved the Lobster-miso soup with tofu as well as the mini blue cheese stuffed burgers. Everyone loved their food. Steaks were a little underdone, even for being ordered med rare, then when we asked for one to be cooked a little more, it took forever. The service is friendly and pleasant but slow. An extra side was ordered after everything else was served...but it never came. Busing leaves something to be desired as well as drink refill attentiveness. It was pretty busy for a late Monday evening in April, but cleared out around 9pm. We had a wonderful time, enjoyed the unique dishes, others were just okay. Loved having the private area, made a reservation about a week ahead of time. We'll definitely go back but we knew what to order based on other Yelp reviews and also knew we would probably wait a while for our service. In their defense, they may have thought we were waiting on more people or that we wanted a long leisurely dinner. We'll go back and I'll update my review. Until them, I would recommend giving it a try! It's not cheep but I didn't find it outrageous at all. But don't go if you want a $20 meal, it's a la carte, so plan to spend $40/person without desserts and minimal drinks. Nice atmosphere. If we did not have the party nook, I would have not enjoyed the nose level or lack of privacy, but that's just me. I wish there was a 3.5 but I'm going to give Pikk's 4 stars, but it's a soft four, waiting on my next visit :)

I've been to Pikk's a few times, and I'm always pretty impressed. Their drink list is limited, but they are willing to make anything if they have the necessary ingredients. Everything is very fresh! The Pikk's Fries for appetizers are really good, and you get an option of three sauces for them (try the wasabi mayo, it's amazing). I got the shepherd's pie, and it was easily one of the best I've had that wasn't homemade. The dessert I had was a peanut butter pie, which made me want to die; it was so good. The service was great, and didn't mind that we were such a large group. This is definitely a place to go if you want something classy but comfortable.

From Schererville we can make it to a spot downtown to eat in about the same time as it takes us to get to the square in Valpo-- so we rarely choose Valpo. Pikk's gives me reason to believe that there's hope for great upscale bar food/ steaks in NWI. This was a great place for a weeknight birthday celebration- the house aged porterhouse was superb and the menu interesting enough to bring us back. Not to missed are the martinis and appetizers as well as the desserts; you can eat really well here without being ridiculously spendy. Can't wait to try their famous burgers next.

I'm kind of surprised reading the reviews of this place. I don't think it's the greatest restaurant in Valpo; but it's really good, the service is great, and they pour a generous cocktail. During our meal, 3 different people came by to check and make sure we were happy- that alone is worth 4 stars. So this place is in downtown, right on the Square. Given that fact, you know the competition is fierce, so these places know how to bring their "A" game if they want to survive. Pikk's menu is somewhat small, but they do have a lot of daily specials and they have some unique craft cocktails. I was thoroughly impressed with my rye old fashioned- this is a delightful cocktail that packs a punch. My date had the bourbon lemonade (made with Bulleit, I believe) and it was a hefty cocktail as well. I had the flank steak sandwich (open faced) and my date had the special fried chicken. The food was solid, the cooks definitely know what they're doing. The flank was nicely cooked medium rare and was good. The fried chicken was decent, the mashed red potatoes and corn on the cob were the start of the show. I'd suggest brining the chicken or stuffing the cavities of the bird with herbs or something before frying to get a little more flavor, but the batter was delish. Overall our service was awesome. I really appreciated that they checked on us often, the food and drinks were delivered fast, and everything was accurate. Definitely a four-star experience.

Went here once before for lunch - impressed with the sandwiches, but service was slow. My family is in town this weekend, and they were the only restaurant that could quickly accommodate a party of 7 without a reservation, so I figured we'd give it a second shot. Omg. My dad's won't stop talking about how fantastic his ribs were. My uncle's burger looked amazing. And my tuna ceviche was absolutely outstanding. Service was great - everyone was so friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable and no one left hungry. Pikks, you've won me back. Keep up the good work.

It is a shame that I feel I have to give Pikk's a poor review. The food has always been good but the customer service has declined so profoundly that I doubt we'll go back. Last night was the second time in a row that we stood at the entrance for a solid five minutes as wait staff whizzed by without eye contact or a single word (apparently there is no host or hostess). Once we were seated and the bus boy set our table, it was another 10 minutes or so before the waitress came by to see if we had any questions. We did... "Could we see a menu?!" We were already too frustrated with the service so we left. I hope you have better luck!

Pikk's is trying very hard to be a five star restaurant. The prices are high and the staff are certainly attentive. The food is so so, served in gigantic portions. Quantity however does not make up for a lack of quality. The burgers are the size of your head. I didn't eat one, although my friends did. The beers, which I experienced, are overpriced. Tasty, certainly. Just not with $13 a bottle.

Go to Denny's by I-94 in Portage. It's the same quality food, same quality service, and the prices at Denny's are a lot better. Denny's just doesn't serve beer. There are plenty of good restaurants on the square in Valpo. Go to any one of them within walking distance of Pikk's Tavern and you will get better food and service.

We had a great time with my grandparents. My grandmother's mini burgers were very overcooked- my boyfriend just gave her a piece of fish and ate her order even though they were black. I get the feeling that if she had sent it back they would have been nice about it, but it wasn't a big deal. He likes crispy meat anyway. I had the chopped salad with steak and it was great! The portion size was huge, very filling! Their fish is excellent, I suggest it. My grandfather ordered a burger- he said it wasn't anything to write home about but it was acceptable and he ate it all. I also tried a Pink Cadillac and my boyfriend got a Dragon's Milk beer. I would suggest either, however the drinks are pretty expensive even for a bar so be aware that even for a bar the prices are a bit steep. All in all the food was adequate, nothing more or less. The service was what blew us away, everyone was extremely helpful, polite, and smiling.

I would have given this place more stars a couple years ago, but after being here so many times the place just gets boring. I think the menu has stayed the same since it opened. They may have changed a couple food items, but basically it's the same small menu every single time you go in. There is nothing on the menu that is just fabulous! I think we have probably tried everything on the menu...it's all good, but not great. Having said that...the service is usually good. The atmosphere is nice. Has outdoor dining in the summer. They do have a really good red velvet cake for dessert, but it's a hit or miss. Sometimes it taste very dry, but if you get it on a good day, it's fabulous!!!

Boy, did we pikk the wrong place. This place was a waste of our money and time. The Burger of the Month had a patty that was half the size of the bun. And the bun wasn't even a bun, but rather rye toast slices instead. The mayonnaise was all of 1 squiggle absorbed into the toast. The onion rings were ladened in oil and they were so huge that the breading was doughy and chewy. You could taste the oil. They were the worst onion rings ever. We sat in the booth and liked the ambiance, but the chef or somebody kept standing by the booths. It felt like he had nothing to do in the back kitchen but listen to our conversation and laughter. We were the only customers dining. How annoying and with 4 hours left till closing. As soon as we stood up to leave, he was on that table to clean it like vultures are on a dead carcass.

I've been to Pikk's several times. In fact, my wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. It can be very, very good. The last couple of times I've been here, though, it seems as if it is hit and miss. The one thing I can say, however, that is always very good, is the service. I went there a few weeks ago for a family birthday dinner, and got the roasted half chicken with a twice baked potato. The chicken was decent. It was fully cooked and juicy, but the skin was pretty rubbery. The twice baked potato was not as hot as it should have been. Then, last night, I went again, for another family birthday dinner. I got the Tuesday night special, which is buttermilk fried chicken. It is half of a chicken, which comes with smashed potatoes and a side. I got broccoli. The chicken was decent. Again, it was fully cooked and juicy. But, the breading... it had NO flavor to it at all. It didn't seem they put any seasoning in the breading mixture. I had to put a little bit of salt on them to get the flavor up. Also, the breading was entirely too thick. It was basically the same as taking each piece of chicken, smashing a biscuit on each side of it, and then frying it. The smashed potatoes were good - but, again, not very hot. The broccoli was well cooked - not mushy but not too raw - but, it was so water logged. You bit in to a piece and got a flood of broccoli flavored water. I was dipping a few pieces in the hollandaise sauce that comes with it, and at the end there was a pool of water on top. My wife got a half slab of ribs, which I tasted. They were alright. Not a lot of meat on the portion she got, though. Too much BBQ sauce as far as I was concerned. If you live around here and want good ribs, go to Wagner's. Pikk's can be a great place, though. Anytime I've gotten a steak, it has been very good. It seems if you stay in the restaurant's wheelhouse - steaks and baked potato - you end up with a very good meal. Start straying from it, however... and, in my opinion, you CAN be disappointed. On the up side, however... if it's your birthday, you get a free slice of red-velvet cake. Which, is very good. As far as a dessert goes, I've never been disappointed by the creme brulee. First off, it's huge. Second, it has blueberries in it. Third, it comes with a rather thick brulee to it. It's very good.

We came here on the recommendation of a friend. It's a cool cafe in the midst of a downtown that's being revitalized. The server came up to our table and asked what we wanted to order. When I asked him about the special, the Juicy Lucy, he almost started drooling and his demeanor changed. All of a sudden, he was excited and proclaimed that the Juicy Lucy was so good he had ordered it himself a few times. The Juicy Lucy is a hamburger, and a great hamburger I might add, where the key is a tomato bacon jam they spread on it. I'm serious... tomato bacon jam. Not only is the burger juicy and spiced perfectly but the jam gives it a sweet salty taste that is just killer. Along with the search for the perfect BBQ, I have had my share of burgers searching for the best burger. This burger is a special order through the month of June but I'm telling you if you are in the Valpo area, I would recommend ordering it!

Over-priced Taco Bell. Waiter thought it was a good idea to argue with us for 10 minutes over how to separate the checks until told to stop (she would not stop!!). Pikk's has a consistent problem with bad and poorly trained waitstaff. To their credit, they did respond and turn off the awful muzak blasting outside. Charges $4.50 for 25¢ of root beer syrup, no refill. Charged $9 for beer (no prices on the menu-for good reason). Mexican special was anything but special- bland, unappetizing fare, plated bare-bones and pretty much tasteless. A chef's shame! Save your dough and go find "Moe's". Better yet, Meditrina is a much better option for better food in the area. That or hike over to Miller Bakery Cafe, or to Gamba's for more class and better fare. For burgers, go to tiny Octave in Chesterton where you can get a gourmet burger and a beer for the price of just a beer at Pikk's, and without the attitude! We were eating at Bon Femme, but got some "sponge chicken" last time, so that is not really a good option at those prices. I have not eaten at KFC since it became Yum Brands, but maybe we should give it a shot- what's there to loose with what's being served up in Valpo?

What a pleasant surprise!!! Stopped into Pikks on a whim. Had some errands in Valpo and needed some dinner. We chose Pikks because quite frankly we got a parking spot right in front. We started with the Scottish Egg for an appetizer. YUM! Perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg although it could've been a tad runnier per my husband. I loved it!! Husband and I split the tavern burger with mushrooms on the side. Perfectly cooked burger!!! Medium rare, juicy, loads of flavor, didn't even need ketchup kind of burger. LOVED every bite. Fries and homemade pickle on the side was delicious too. Glad we split the burger because it was just the right amount for us. Fantastic service!! Prompt, courteous, friendly, and efficient. Bravo!!! My Ruben was made with the end of the loaf of bread (the heal) and included 1 slice of corned beef. The other sandwiches were just as skimpy and had no taste. We should have stayed home and made our own sandwiches and saved 80.00.

Had a good burger and fish tacos from this place. That's where the positive stops. Our waitress could have cared less about us. I wrote a review on Yelp that Pikk's had removed because I mentioned a waitresses name. Well, now I'll tell you that if you're young and don't look like you have money you'll be treated accordingly (like trash). Pikk's is notorious for horrendous service. Think I'm joking? Look at ALL THE FILTERED REVIEWS on this establishment. Waited over 30 minutes just to get our check in an uncrowded restaurant so the waitress could pad her tips to individuals ordering drinks. Once the hundred dollar bill came out to pay we were best buddies though? Right? Seriously don't give this establishment your money. There are tons of places in Valpo that have better food and haven't paid to have their bad Yelp reviews filtered so they can look like a somewhat reputable establishment.

Oh Pikk's...how much I want to like you. Sadly, every single time we go the food gets significantly worse. The last visit was truly our last as it was the 3rd visit in a row where food had to be sent back to the kitchen. On a busy Friday night we took a friend from out of town to Pikk's for dinner. My husband ordered ribs, my friend (who is pregnant) ordered a burger well done, and I had the burger of the month medium rare. In addition we ordered potato skins. The skins used to be 3 large potato halves stuffed with steak and cheese. They now apparently take 2 halves and cut them into strips but charge more money. Nice. When the food arrived the ribs were so burnt they were inedible. My friends burger was raw in the middle and mine was overly well done. We returned all 3 items and when they came back they were done properly. The manager came by to apologize and said he was going to "take care of us"...which turned out to mean a large piece of red velvet cake that had freezer burn. When we commented that we didn't really want the red velvet cake and that it wasn't very good, and that one piece of cake to apologize for 3 returned meals wasn't really enough, we were told that the cake is their signature item and was all they were willing to offer. To make matters worse my friend and I both had some serious stomach issues for the next 24 hours that can only be attributed to our dinner at Pikk's. Perhaps in the future Pikk's will go back to full orders of well prepared food that is priced decently and offer better customer service. When we first moved to Valpo 4 years ago this restaurant was our favorite. Now I wouldn't send anyone there to eat. ever. Would it surprise the manager to know that while waiting for a table at another restaurant in downtown Valpo on Friday we met a couple who immediately brought up how they have had a number of bad experiences with Pikk's and will never return? It didn't surprise us in the least. Skip this place and head anywhere else.

Boy oh boy has this place let themselves go ! What in the world happened guys ? Why have the delicious, crunchy fries evolved to being overgreased, dark, limp potato chunks ? It seems that only this past summer we were enoying lunches on your outdoor patio and next thing you know, this unpleasant transformation happens! For instance, who thought that sneaking the fried greasy ham in place of turkey into a sandwich would go unnoticed ? Including everyone's meals and drinks on one bill is also always appreciated -especially when its a party of at least eight people and the waitress simply lets the request for separate checks drop by the wayside. I guess they wanted us to practice our math skills that day. Get yourselves together guys. Whatever you're doing isnt working so maybe radical self improvement should be on the agenda next.

My family reserved the private room downstairs. It was a mixture of mostly adults, but some kids too. They had about three waiters for us. One guy was, at one point, extremely rude to the kids to the point that every adult gave him the side-eye. The next time he showed up, he was over-the-top kid-friendly. Bi-polar, obviously. Our main waiter was super nice and super friendly. Everything regarding the food was good, except for the Mongolian beef that my mom ordered. First of all, Mongolian beef......at Pikks?! Really?! It was the only Asian dish on the menu. They should probably cut that out because my mom had a big-ass piece of fatty tendon in her meal. Gross............. I really like Pikks, good place to bring family when they are in town. The building is really cool and has some history to go along w/ it. I don't know why some are saying the service stinks. I've never had a bad server, in fact, someone is filling my water glass every 5 min. The food is a little pricy, but better than going to some chain restaurant......Changed my vote from 4 to 3....sandwiches and burgers are always great, but a couple times I've ordered the chicken and pork and they were dry.

This place is usually very good, but the menu isn't particularly cheap so if you order the wrong thing you're going to want to burn that mother down. Luckily you have me here to tell you what to order, the open face steak sandwich. Middle of the menu as far as price range; top of the pack as far as taste. Their steaks are pretty good too, cooked well, no complaints. My girlfriend is a hamburger maven and she thinks they do it pretty well. Cool bar, definitely one of the best in Valpo. Pretty solid beer selection, although I wish they had more 3 Floyds, given the close proximity and sheer awesomeness of the brewery. Good mixed drinks as well, I have yet to be disappointed. A little bit steep for a law student, but I get by with a little help from my friends. I would not recommend any of the pork options, and some of their sides are lacking but as far as Valpo dining goes, this is one of the many great options. I like the atmosphere, it smells of mahogany and leather bound books. Not too stuffy but it is somewhat upscale. They also have a downstairs which seats quite a few people, so don't be turned away by a busy looking dining room. This place is horrible. The manager spent the entire time we were there circling our table because 1 of our 7 guests happened to be running late. We spent nearly $200 there, yet this guy thought it was appropriate to harrass us. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy as the chicken was mediocre and not worth the hype. For all the choices Valpo has, this place is not worth it. The wait staff was friendly though.

I have been to Pikk's probably 10 times. I WANT to like it but I just never have any luck with the food. The service is friendly and the atmospere is cool. The outdoor dining deck is lovely on a warm summer night. The cocktails ARE good. On the weekends, in the summer, they often have good local musicians. Like I said before "I WANT to like Pikks" I have had the steak sandwich and it tastes like beef jerky. The Pad Thai, in the words of my boyfriend was "the worst I've ever had". I was downtown and ordered fried pickles off of the Eat Up, Wine Down menu and when they arrived they had a tremendous amount of breading and upon biting into it, I realized it was a sweet pickle. Now, of course, not liking sweet pickles is a matter of taste...but it would be a nice thing for a server to let you know. The vast majority of my friends won't even go there because the food items they have tried, haven't been good either. Things that I have liked: shrimp cocktail (they mix your choice of 3 sauces at your table), tuna tartar, and the guacamole. It's few and far between.

They have a separate gluten free menu and gluten free beer; however, I've had experiences where some servers have been very knowledgeable of gluten and others knew nothing. The food at this place has been hit or miss for me since we started going here back in 2008. Sometimes the food is excellent, other times it is really blah. Case in point, I've ordered the chicken alfredo and it's been really delicious, but one time the sauce was practically just milk - yuck - and once it was brought to me without the chicken. When I asked why they apologized and brought out a bowl of plain chicken in that I could mix in myself. Oh, and one time they brought this dish to me with a piece of bread sitting ON TOP of the pasta, which goes to show that the server didn't know anything about gluten or else she would not have brought me the dish like that when I specifically ordered it gluten free. And no, I'm sorry, but those with Celiac can't just pick it off or eat around it. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to make a new batch. I finally stopped ordering the chicken alfredo. The salmon has always been really good though and they have Greens gluten free beer, which I have a hard time finding anywhere else. The atmosphere and location are great too, and the staff have always been friendly.

This is my go-to place to take someone who you are just meeting. It's not over the top but still maintains a high level of class from its menu and employees. It looks like a hole in the wall but always surprises everyone (in a good way) once the get inside. I recommend to pretty much any type of person. They always do it right here.

We went here for the first time a couple of months ago and sat outside on the patio. The staff was super friendly, helpful and efficient. My husband and I both had the fish and chips and, I have to say, it was the best fish and chips we have had in North America. I don't say this lightly as we used to live in England, the home of fish and chips. This is a great little place in downtown valpo...I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back very soon!

Well....When Pikk's first opened it was great! had a good menu and a pretty good beer list...but...every time the wife and I go it got worse and worse! I mean come on! the cook was OK with sending a salad with black avocado on it....two times... then said sorry and gave us a free dessert.....dry on the outside and mush in the middle.. no more Pikks for us... 2 good times out of 10....yep

Pikk's Tavern has a comfortable atmosphere with a nice (yet small) bar area and great food. Like others have mentioned, it is a bit spendy considering it's located in good ol' Valpo, but for a nice dinner in town, I recommend it. If you're in the mood for a fresh salad, the chopped salad with green goddess dressing is a hit. One my my favorite courses, which Pikk's prepares quite well, is dessert. I went to Pikk's last month with a friend. We shared two desserts after our meal: red velvet cake with a cream cheese icing and a creme brulee. Both desserts were amazing! Follow that up with a famtastic cup of espresso, and I was set. I will be returning.

Took my girlfriend for dinner and it was a very bad experience. I've had multiple servers before working the same table, but the problem here was they didn't communicate and continually dropped the ball. First off it took them 10 minutes after they seated us before asking if we wanted anything to drink. We got the fries appetizer, and the sauces are the only reason this is getting a star. Apparently it was fried chicken night, so we decided to get that and a burger. Although it was a decent sized portion, the chicken was severely overcooked and tasted like burnt grease. Even worse, the first piece I grabbed was actually cold, and it was obvious it was left over from a previous order because the other pieces were ripping hot from being overlooked. My burger came out Pittsburg rare (and tasteless) after ordering it medium. The best part was when we were waiting for drinks and other things during our meal, we could see the servers sitting at the tables in the back right eating instead of doing their job. I've worked in many restaurants, and in each one (and from speaking with others) eating in front of the guests while you are working is unacceptable, and considering it was taking away from the dining experience I was paying for, I'm inclined to agree. With so many places to choose from with good food and service, I don't think I'll ever be back.

We were there for their Italian Night. I had the ravioli - was forewarned it was spicy and it was - but very good. Wine was nice but pricey, boyfriend's penne pasta was not so good. The shrimp cocktail was small - especially considering the price. Service was attentive and atmosphere is relaxing.

I was worried when I read some of the reviews for this restaurant but my dad was so excited to try Pikk's for the first time that we went for his birthday a few days ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant lived up to most of the reviews... The dinner started with a surly waiter and freezing air temps inside the restaurant. The decor is very pretty and quite cozy. The food was just ok, but for the price and the fact that it took us almost an hour to get it after we ordered, we expected it to be much better. The pork chop and steak tacos received high praise at the table. The steak failed to please. The bbq ribs received mixed reviews. Two of us ordered them and neither of us liked them, but the next day my mom was eating them as left overs and thought they were good. It's getting 2 stars because the manager was very nice and apologetic for our wait. Plus, it also appeared that if you were regulars, you got tremendous service. I saw several of them being hugged and helped right away--the waiter even left our table in the middle of serving us to help his regulars. If I decide to try it again and like it better, I will definitely update my review, but right now, I'm in no hurry to go back.

We've been to Pikks a few times, and today I went for lunch with my family. While the food is good and the service is decent, I do have a complaint. Pikks advertises on a local fundraising card for 10% off of lunches on Fridays and Saturday's. When we tried to use the card, the discount amount was for one lunch meal instead of the entire food portion of the bill. Granted, the additional discount was less than $3, but the point being that we have used the card at other restaurants before, and the discount is a percentage off the entire bill (excluding alcohol). After I got home, I phoned Pikks to talk with the manager. He told me it was for "cardholder" only. So for the fact that I couldn't get a $3 discount for my $40 lunch lost him a customer. He ended our conversation by saying "too bad" and hanging up on me. Great customer service...NOT. Go eat down the street at Bon Femme, Bistro 157, Margaritas, or Valley Kitchen. We eat out a lot and will give continued business to these other downtown restaurants with much better service.

Went on a Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't very crowded - lots of empty seats, no line, and employees socializing amongst themselves - but for some reason it took my boyfriend and I 10-15 minutes to be seated. Several employees walked past us without offering to seat us. After being seated, it took another 25 minutes for our order to be taken. I don't even know why we stayed. When the server came, she was very kind and did her best to meet our needs. The food was also quite good. So overall, two stars. One for my food and one for the nice server. Otherwise, I'll never set foot in that place again. What a disappointment.

I've been going to Pikks since it opened a few years ago and really enjoy it. It's my go to dining option for casual but upscale food (for Valpo). The steaks are always reliable and my wife always enjoys their fish and French martinis. I also often use it for business lunches. In summary, one of the best run and versatile restaurants we have in Valparaiso. The pricing is very fair for what they are offering.

I went here to celebrate my graduation because I wanted an amazing steak dinner and had heard great things. The steak reminded me a lot of one you get at the Sizzler. It was over-cooked and dry. Parts of it were charred. I ordered it medium rare but if it was a good cut of steak, even cooked medium well/well done it wouldn't have been that bad. We ordered the chocolate cake and it came out still frozen inside - even though when we ordered it the waitress said it's always made fresh. The service was pretty decent but the food was awful for the price. Not going back!

I stumbled across this little restaurant walking around Valparaiso. We only stopped in to have one drink and to use the washroom. As soon as we sat down we met one of their regulars who bought us a few rounds and insisted on eating his pretzel he just ordered. It was the best pretzel I ever had & it came with 2 dipping sauces, cheese & sweet and sour. They have a cool private dining area in the basement, great for parties! If I am ever in Valparaiso again I would stop in and try a few more things on the menu.

My family visited Pikk's Tavern to celebrate. We were a mixed group of adults and children, 8 in total. The staff were extremely helpful in getting us a suitable table for our group, and remained very attentive and helpful throughout our meal. Admittedly we went on a Monday night and they were slow, but you can't fake genuine kindness and sense of humor--the staff was simply great. The food itself was good to excellent. The Oysters Rockefeller were very tasty and not overcooked as many restaurants prepare them. The Tuna Tartar was also quite tasty, but not a very large portion for the price. We had a variety of dishes from pasta to Fillet, and all were quite nice. I personally had the ribs, which were surprisingly good for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in barbecue. What really impressed me was the sides; the aug-rotten potatoes were simply amazing! Crispy topped with a bit of a bite from cheddar (or another sharp cheese). Very tasty lemon asparagus, better than average french fries--the sides made the meal. My wife wanted an entree of the mac-and-cheese (which is actually a side) and they happily prepared that for her, which made her happy. The pricing isn't intimidating at all from my perspective, but I live in Chicago not NW Indiana. For Valpo, it's probably on the high end of what you'd expect to pay for steaks and such, but the service quality, decor, and tastiness of the food warrant it. I expect we'll be back soon.

Needed a place to spend a 'date night' with the boyfriend in Valpo. Searched around Yelp and found this place. Overall it was a pretty great decision. Took them a bit longer to seat just the two of us. The decor and service was wonderful. The food was pretty good too. I had the shrimp cooked crab and the boyfriend ordered the pork chop. Perfect amount of food to fill us up without having to bring home leftovers. I would definitely go here again the next time we find ourselves around Valparaiso.

Overpriced for what you get...especially the drinks (yikes!!). Been here a few times now, and probably won't go back again. Last time, the service was absolutely awful. We waited 20 minutes just to get some lousy mustard, and the manager was quite rude about it. In fact, it was the manager who hastily plopped our meals down on the table, then scurried away in a flash without asking if we needed anything else (like mustard, ketchup, etc). Our waitress disappeared for over 30 minutes. Sitting there with empty drinks, and couldn't get the condiments we needed. I was ready to walk out. The food here is average at best. For these prices, I'd expect MUCH MUCH better.

I'm only giving it three stars instead of two because I had one good lunch experience here almost two years ago. A friend and I stopped by for some drinks and lunch during Valpo Homecoming 2011 and had a great time. I thought the ambiance was perfect- not divey but not overly highbrow- they poured stiff drinks and had good beers and the sandwich selections, including my fish tacos, were really interesting, well made and convenient. Cut to yesterday when my husband and I arranged to meet with some friends we had not seen in awhile after the Valpo b-ball game. We all arrived shortly before three and were seated immediately. Then I noticed that we were given the dinner menu. My husband asked when they switched to the dinner menu and the waiter said 3:00. (Later, when we discussed it with the host, he told us 2:30). Normally, I wouldn't care but the dinner menu at Pikk's has a dearth of sandwiches and is way too fancy for a bar. Also overpriced. This just isn't the kind of place where I would want to get a $27 entree. Sorry. Anyway, we did ask if we could order off the lunch menu, seeing as it was only 3:10 but were denied. OK, we were going to make the best of it and ordered drinks. Then I noticed the "Weekly Specials" on the menu and we decided to get an appetizer that looked interesting off of it while we pondered what else we were going to eat. The waiter (who by the way was really pretty dour and douchey), informed us that NONE of the specials listed on the menu were available. At all. Period. Are you kidding me??? I asked why we were given the menus in the first place if that was the case. He freaked and made the host/manager, Aaron, come over. Aaron was super cool, I'll admit. But he wasn't really able to answer our questions. He apologized for not informing us when we were seated that the specials were not available. But then we got conflicting stories as to why that was. One version was that they "just switched over the menu" and the second was that the chef had a "family emergency." I'm really not sure what the truth was, but both seemed pretty dubious. We asked again if we could order from the lunch menu (wouldn't sandwiches be easier to produce than non-existent specials?). Once again, we were denied. Aaron was very apologetic and offered to comp our drinks before we went elsewhere. We really appreciated that and took him up on it. After leaving a decent tip for the waiter who never returned, we put on our coats and were walking out the door when Aaron stopped us to say that as a gesture of good will, he had taken the liberty of ordering us a couple signature appetizers. He said he really wanted us to come back another time. So, we stayed for those- the fries and the hot pretzel. I have heard good things about the pretzel and it was very tasty. Did not try the fries but they looked good and our friends said they were. I would very definitely come back here-- for lunch. And I would also very definitely recommend that they consider lengthening the lunch time, particularly on weekends. I just don't know too many people who want $27 lamb shanks at 3pm after a basketball game. But maybe I'm the weirdo! Three stars for the past experience and Aaron's valiant efforts yesterday.

On Tuesday, August 16th we had received the worst service ever from a dining est...ablishment! The owner Phil told us to try someone else next time after we initially gave up our table of 6 to a group with a person in a wheel chair. We arrived at 6:30pm and the entrees came at 8:40pm...for only TWO of our party of SIX. The other entrees came out 20 mins after. Bread was never served to our table and we watched three other groups get up and leave without paying because of the horrible service and rude staff. My boyfriend and I approached the owner who told us to try somewhere else next time with no appology or anything close to a credit to our bill. Please no one ever eat here again. This business deserves to be closed ASAP because service to the paying customer is of no importance to them.

I have been here twice since I moved to Valparaiso and have had great experiences both times. The first time, I was there with my family who was visiting from the east coast and we had a great time. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The cheeseburger there is the best I have ever had! Really nice atmosphere at the restaurant too which is always a wonderful plus :) Update 5/2012 - I changed my review from 4 stars to 3 stars based on a recent experience here where they forgot about us. My husband and I called and made reservations for dinner. When we got there, our table wasn't ready so we happily said we'd wait at the bar. The hostess said she would come and get us when our table was ready. The place was really busy - every table full and other people waiting at the bar too. Finally, an hour went by and I saw two parties get seated before us - two parties that got there well after we did. I went to the hostess (same person) to ask what was up and the hostess had no idea who I was and said, "Did you put your name in?" I told her we'd called and made reservations and that she said she would come and get us when our table was ready. She felt really bad and apologized and said they'd get us seated right away, which we were. Then a guy came over to us, maybe the manager, and also apologized. My husband was upset because we were sitting at the bar paying money for beers when we could/should have been sitting at our table a long time ago. He said this and the guy/manager didn't seem to care. Pikk's should have offered us a free round of drinks - or something - to make up for their mistake. But they didn't offer us anything. This made me feel like they didn't care about us. It would have been just a few bucks out of their pocket for a round of drinks or free appetizer or something. People make mistakes - I get it - but the restaurant business is pure customer service. By not offering to do something to make up for their stupid mistake it makes me feel that Pikk's doesn't really care about their customers (or at least they didn't care about us). Won't be going back here anytime soon.

I love PIKKs! It's a fabulous spot to go for a drink and relax on a Saturday night but also a wonderful place for Sunday brunch. The Wednesday night Mexican theme is amazing, BEST guacamole in town! The service is top notch and all of the staff are super friendly and helpful!

What a charming place and I totally disagree with L. R. about the pricing. Sure, Pikk's is a bit pricey for NWI but it is not outrageous. It is owned by Paul LoDuca (Vinci, Adobo Grill). We started with the antipasto appetizer special. There was a generous serving of thick cut prosciutto, some excellent salami, a nice portion of Gorgonzola, chicken bruschetta and the best - cheese cheesecake. All was served on a bed of fresh spinach with a sweet balsamic vinegar and olive oil sauce. It was a large portion and we could have had salad or soup and made a meal of it. Mom had the open faced steak sandwich ($12.99) and I had the burger ($9.99). Both came with fresh cut, slender fries. The flank steak was served rare and had Pikk's own steak sauce drizzled on top. My burger was served with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Despite ordering rare, it came out medium. I made a comment to Mom and the waiter overheard and immediately offered a replacement. I took it and the fresh burger came out rare and very hot. The burger was grilled and one of the best I have had. The wines begin at $7.50 for a generous glass and there is a small, quality selection available. The mini burgers are $1.00 during happy hour 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday and the daily special (if it is available) is half price during the last hour before closing. There are special events the 2nd Thursday of every month. The inside of Pikk's is dark and woody. One wall is all brick. It is not too noisy. It is a challenge to get to the restrooms as you have to pass the open kitchen window where servers are ordering and picking up their meal. The ladies room was nicely decorated. There was plenty of outdoor dining available. Service was excellent - probably the best I have experienced in a long, long time. Pikk's does a brunch on Sunday and dishes begin at $7.99 up to $9.99. We're anxious to return to this nice addition to Valpo.

Woof. I would give it a 4 if the whole menu was fantastic and the menu was a bit cheaper. Here is the trick. Pikk's is good at items that are not fancy. order a fancy expensive item on their menu and it is obvious the chef isnt as focused on that. This is much like ordering a burger at a Chinese eatery. Order up what you would consider bar food and they take that and up the ante. The open face steak sandwhich is their finest, their fries divine and their basic dishes are where it is at. order pad Thai at a tavern? of course it isn't going to be good. Another secret: New years eve is awesome here. No charge! but they add new year's even specials and drinks and stay open and celebrate with you.

Lets put this in perspective. For Valparaiso Indiana it gets 3 or 4 stars. If you are stacking it against Chicago it would receive 2 stars. It is quaint, cozy and makes you feel like you belong. They have a well stocked bar and the bartenders are well versed in making the drinks on the menu, but don't expect anything inspired off the cuff. They are not well versed in mixing even the most rudimentary cocktails. Stick with the menu and you will enjoy a drink. The food is hit or miss like a previous post mentioned. I have been there about 6 to 8 times and seem to enjoy it most when I just share a few appetizers. The blue cheese small burgers are really wonderful. Honestly, you will crave them once you've had them, and return wanting more...and then get lulled into thinking you should explore more of the menu since those damn burgers were so good...and that's where you will be disappointed. The steaks are overpriced and just "ok", all sides are a la carte and equally "ok". Fun place to catch live music with friends, have a drink and share apps. Recommend the mini burgers, tuna poke, fries, table side shrimp cocktail is good-but way overpriced for such small shrimp, the steak salad was alright too. The steak, chops, salmon and pasta dishes were just "ok", especially for the price.

Overpriced and disappointing. Steak salad made with napa cabbage revolting. Bitter. 3 tiny slivers of steak. Why is it so expensive??? $70 for two. I recently was in Chicago and dined on fabulous cuisine for $20. People in Valpo obviously have no idea what good grub is. Or maybe I watch too much Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. First time there. Will never go back. Every beer my husband ordered, they didn't have it. My problem is I always compare pubs to the Nine Irish Brothers in West Lafayette which is fabulous..all food is amazing and inexpensive. Will not go back. That is two downtown Valpo restaurants I have tried so far and both have been overpriced and rubbish.

Not impressed at all. My dining club chose this place to eat last month. The food was okay. Not fantastic, not awful. The price floored every one of us. Not one of us will go back. Not sure what they're trying to accomplish but soup shouldn't cost so much. Oh, they also charged if you got pasta and wanted garlic bread with it. The garlic bread was $2.00 a slice. My goodness, they must think they're in New York City because I've paid those kind of prices there. This is not New York City for God's sake. ** As an aside - I want to add that my dinner club went for dinner. We had actual entrees. Had we gotten sandwiches and burgers, our bill would have been much less I'm sure. I don't know about Vinci or Adobo Grill, but I can tell you my last dinner in Vail cost less.

I had the WORST experience at PIKKs ever!! We got there and they had ran out of bread and chicken on a tuesday night. We got there at 6:30 and did not get out food for 2 hours. the food came partly cold and it took another 18 minutes for them to bring the rest of the party of 5's food. I spoke with the owner twice and he told me if I don't like it then to go somewhere else. The owner does not know how to treat people including his own paying customers. He told me that since our bill was only 100 dollars we have nothing to complain about. Please do not waste your time or money on this place in Valpo. I am not one to complain but this was by far the worst place/service I have ever had in my life.

We had a wonderful experience in the private nook as we celebrated three family birthdays. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The bill was stiff but the menu had unique options we really enjoyed. I especially loved the Lobster-miso soup with tofu as well as the mini blue cheese stuffed burgers. Everyone loved their food. Steaks were a little underdone, even for being ordered med rare, then when we asked for one to be cooked a little more, it took forever. The service is friendly and pleasant but slow. An extra side was ordered after everything else was served...but it never came. Busing leaves something to be desired as well as drink refill attentiveness. It was pretty busy for a late Monday evening in April, but cleared out around 9pm. We had a wonderful time, enjoyed the unique dishes, others were just okay. Loved having the private area, made a reservation about a week ahead of time. We'll definitely go back but we knew what to order based on other Yelp reviews and also knew we would probably wait a while for our service. In their defense, they may have thought we were waiting on more people or that we wanted a long leisurely dinner. We'll go back and I'll update my review. Until them, I would recommend giving it a try! It's not cheep but I didn't find it outrageous at all. But don't go if you want a $20 meal, it's a la carte, so plan to spend $40/person without desserts and minimal drinks. Nice atmosphere. If we did not have the party nook, I would have not enjoyed the nose level or lack of privacy, but that's just me. I wish there was a 3.5 but I'm going to give Pikk's 4 stars, but it's a soft four, waiting on my next visit :)

My favorite place. Service, food, atmosphere is great. The Pikk's Alley Deck is a great place to enjoy sounds and sights of Downtown Valpo. It has a true Chicago feel.
