Horrible service. Made reservations at 6, took us til 8 to get our food. They said place was busy but seemed like a normal night for restaurants. The only good thing is that there is apparently karaoke at 8:30. Although it's 8:40 and there is no sign of karaoke yet. Food was lackluster at best.

We tried this place a little while ago and it was good. Unfortunately with the array of choices in Valpo it comes in at the bottom of restaurants that I think of going to. The food was good but it seemed like it was just missing something?

When I noticed this new cafe along Calumet Avenue, I really wanted to like it. I had these hopes of a Central Park style bistro for pleasant leisurely lunches on warm summer days. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but my hopes were disappointed. On the surface, my experience started off very normal. The staff was friendly if not overly welcoming. They were enthusiastic to share their new establishment taking the time to chat with us briefly. Regardless, I was immediately let down by the lack of real atmosphere. It seemed like the owners couldn't make up their minds exactly what type of restaurant this was. Was it a trendy bistro? A sports bar? A hipster dive? Simply it was a disappointing environment to enter into. But environment is only really a small part of it. You can have crap surroundings with mind blowing food. However, in this respect the Parkside underwhelmed as well. I had the BBQ Pulled Pork which was mostly bland and flavorless. My friend ordered the sliders appetizer based on the recommendation from the serve that it was enough to be a meal. Unfortunately they were less than expected. Maybe this review is a bit harsh, but in a crowded restaurant market like Valpo, you have to really strive to rise above the pack. Parkside Urban Bistro unfortunately falls flat.

Owner yelling at staff loud enough for the customers to hear. Very unprofessional. Waitress says, "that's my mama going on a rant'". No apologies. When cook rang the bell Waitress let our food sit for many minutes at the cook's window while she socialized with incoming friends. She is clearly secure in her job that she doesn't have to be an outstanding waitress.

I didn't eat. Just had two beers at the bar. Beer selection was decent. Bartender good. Atmosphere was modern and yeah I agree with another reviewer who said they weren't sure what kind of a theme the place was going for. Music was pretty good. I would go again if I return to the area.

I'm pretty disappointed. My wife and I went for a late lunch. We got to the restaurant at 1:15 or a little earlier. When we walked in, a large group of about 8 was leaving and there were 4-5 other tables occupied. Some had food and some did not. We were seated and waited 10-15 minutes before the waitress took our order. We were waiting for almost an hour when we decided that if we hit the 1 hour mark before our food came that we would leave. About a minute or two later, our waitress walked outside to chat with someone. We heard a bell and saw that our appetizer was up on the counter, but the waitress was still outside. Nobody else even stirred, so the food sat for a few minutes (about 2-3) before the waitress came in and served us. The rest of the food came up right at the 1 hour mark. The food was OK, but not perfect. The fries were burned and inedible. We won't be back. There are a lot of better quality places in town for lunch.

Such a cute place! The portobello sandwich is the best I've ever had! Looks like the have a great selection of craft beers and yummy looking sangria and flatbreads. Will be back.

Food is AMAZING!! Just what Valpo needed. Service was a bit rocky in the beginning, but has improved with time. Owners are present and attentive, and service is generally prompt and is alway friendly. Bar area is a bit crowded with decor, which makes it a tight squeeze if there are more than a few people at the bar, but other than that its great. The meatloaf is a MUST TRY, and the Sangria is very good as well!!! This place will go far in Valpo. Their location may be off the beaten path for a restaurant, but don't overlook them for that! One of my favorite places to go for a good meal that is a large portion and fairly priced.

In order to succeed you have to do *something* exceptional. There was nothing exceptional. We went in on a Monday for lunch. The decor is cute. They look to be attempting a swanky/modern style, but miss the mark. Still, I say, it's cute. We were seated immediately and then not approached for about 10 minutes, to even take a drink order. The server was very friendly; slow and absent minded, but friendly. I asked about a few of the menu items and she said that she had not tried them all. For me, servers need to have tasted the menu items, no matter how small or new the restaurant. Then it was another 10 minutes before getting our drinks, only after reminding the server that we had not ever been given any drinks. Finally, the food. I ordered the Chili Lime Chicken Tostadas. They were out of sour cream and just offered me more guacamole. The guacamole had a dark, shiny look to it. I am not sure if it was homemade, but it was missing that fresh creaminess. I think it may have been from a mix, but cannot be certain. As for the tostadas, mostly, I just tasted the saltiness of the tortilla. The chicken was dark meat and the "chili lime" flavor was no where to be found. It was served on a bed of greens. Sure I could choke down a bed of dry greens but I think they were just there for presentation. I am not a big one for wasteful plate decorating, make it something people want to eat. Was the price cheap? Yes it was. But I don't need to go back, no matter how cheap.

We went for lunch today and we were greeted and seated soon after we walked in the door. That was the last speedy thing that happened I our 1-1/2 hour lunch. The service was very slow with our waitress disappearing for pieces of time. My daughter-in-law and I ordered deluxe grilled cheese sandwiches. We got regular grilled cheese without the bacon and tomato and the sandwiches were over cooked . My husband's burger did not have the mushrooms on it that were listed on the menu and my son's Italian beef was only 3-4 long. I understand lingering over lunch, but we didn't have time so we had to rush through eating. We will not be back.

Someone in our group received a dirty napkin and someone else received a dirty, food-encrusted fork in their napkin. Other silverware was not very clean. Food was hit and miss, but that doesn't matter if you're not following basic restaurant hygiene.

We decided to try something new, so we stopped here for dinner. The interior is a confusing mix of swanky/modern bar and suburban coffee shop. We were prompty seated and then forgot about. Our waitress was sweet but inattentive and kept disappearing. The menu was all over the place with everything from diner food with cutsy names to more upscale cuisine. We decided to play it safe and order the "Big Azz Burger and PUB Fries." After we orderd, the waitress disappeared for another 10 minutes (which is a feat in a restaurant this small) before bringing us warm water in chunky wine goblets. There is a large bar in PUB that seemed to be mixng up drink after drink, yet we were never offered a drink menu. We were not offered any drink or wine pairings either. We waited for our food for maybe 10-15 minutes without hearing from our waitress. She then brought us red, plastic baskets with an average sized burger and what looks like burnt potato wedges. The burger was dry and topped with a handful to sping mix salad (like you buy at the grocery store), an identifiable cheese, a teeny tiny sun dried tomato slice, some red onion, and an oily "bistro sauce." I could easily get a cheaper, and better burger at pretty much any other restaurant in Valparaiso. The PUB fries, which were actually oversized, badly seasoned potato wedges were just an abomination. I had no idea that one could burn the outside of a wedge so thoroughly and still maintain a gummy interior. They were just ghastly. Our waitress disappeared again before we could even ask for the check. Once I finally flagged her down, she did get us the check within 5 minutes. She took our money and asked us "was it worth it?" which I think it is a very interesting question to ask someone in a restaurant. To answer her, it was not. I would suggest one of the many car and grills in Valparaiso before trying PUB. I will definitely not be returning.

Waitress was very new I suppose but also very confused. Kept on coming to the table and saying things were not available and then coming back to say they were; with long time periods in between. Food was so elegantly described on the menu but not all that in person. Some food was lukewarm and/or cold and the wait time was not appropriate for the size of crowd. Decor kind of busy and disjointed; maybe they do a better bar scene later at night? Ribs and collard greens were quite good, however, when a customer at an adjacent table asked for vinegar for her greens she was met with confusion. They ended up bringing her balsamic for her greens! Hot bag of NOPE! Greens call for a slightly spiced vinegar that originates from plain white or apple cider base. Mushroom lasagna had, no kidding, about 6 mushrooms and NO mushroom flavor to it. If I am going to order an entree where mushroom is the star, it better be rich and mushroomy, no? Sister had lobster mac and cheese and it was served in a soup mug! Decent flavor but not as decadent as menu had us hoping for. Felt like they were going through the 2 week kinks but I have learned they are in their second year in business. Good luck guys, you have a few things right but maybe a food truck with just the ribs would work better long run.

We decided to try someplace new on my fiancé's lunch hour. We sat down and ordered, got our drinks. About 40 mins later decided to ask how much longer it would be. Our waitress went to check. 5 mins after that we had to have it to go. The cheeseburger was good, and the chicken panini was ok. The wait was absolutely terrible. Now I know they're fairly new but to make it in a city full of people on lunch breaks, they're going to have to get it together. I'd try them again but maybe when we have more than an hour to eat.

Service was not good, not once were our dirty plates removed, and our food wasn't good, my sodium level went off the chart after eating the twin filets. I won't be back .

While the kitchen and staff are still getting used to functioning quickly when the restaurant is packed, the quality of the food makes it well worth the wait! The menu is unique while still staying accessible, and everything I've had has been delicious. The fig and Fuji flatbread alone keeps me coming back! If you're short on time for lunch, try calling in for carry out, and don't forget to come for the dinner menu as there are items not available for lunch that you'll be sorry you missed! My favorite is the mushroom Marsala lasagna.

Kind of as expecting something else (I guess from the name plus one of the cook's moms mentioned to me her son was the "chef" there). First of all, not a bad place but definitely not a bistro. **Her son is a cook there, NOT a chef. This place is night time version of a diner. It is a neighborhood bar with food. Friendly service. I had Italian Beef sandwich, it was pretty good. Different than your avg beef sandwich but I ate whole thing. The popcorn they give you tableside is delicious! When I looked at menu from internet BEFORE I arrived there I was going to choose one of their entrees, but when I got there and realized it was more of a bar I stuck to the Italian Beef sandwich (I almost got the beef stew cup). Not sure how to explain why I changed my mind, my whole image of place was blown. I cannot explain now why I was expecting something else. The only real disappointment tonight was that their tapper wasn't working (??) so no draft beer tonight. Pretty disappointing since their bottled beer selection is slim pickings (not as many craft beer choices which is what you would expect from a "bistro"). Not a bad experience, just a different experience than what I had imagined.

Wanted to love it but no.... Service was SLOW and the food was pretty awful. I had the buffalo chic flatbread. Buffalo sauce was completely missing, chicken dry, barely any cheese. I ordered only water- was shocked when it arrived in a tiny wine goblet. I don't eat at chain restaurants and really wanted this place to be awesome...I'm so sorry it wasn't.

We made reservations for a group of 8 and could see our table waiting for us as soon as we walked in which was awesome. What wasn't awesome was that we stood at the door for almost 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. There was a couple in front of us that turned around and left. Once we were seated we quickly realized that our table was broken and told by the staff that there wasn't another place for us to sit. Our server was very nice but incredibly slow. One of our guests was served some kind of light beer instead of the blue moon she ordered and our water glasses were always empty. Our food took over an hour to come out and I was less than impressed with the pork medallions I had waited so long for. My husband ordered the roast beef which seemed to be the only positive part of our experience. If I'm going to pay $40 for dinner for two, I want to leave feeling like I got my money's worth and that was clearly not the case. Unfortunately, we won't be back.

Went there for lunch with a friend and we both had a good meal. We discussed the decor at great length. My friend didn't care for it, but I thought it was nice. To be honest, I don't go to a restaurant to look at the wall color, I go to eat! They had a special $5 cold bean salad which we split as an appetizer. The beans were extremely fresh, and the salad had a good flavor. I ordered the cobb salad, which was also good. My friend ordered the Triple Decker Quisidillas. I tried a few bites and thought they were also pretty good. The server was attentive, quick, and very friendly. Toward the end of our meal, the chef came out and asked us how we liked our meal. We chatted with her for about five minutes or so. She was very friendly and genuinely interested in our opinion of the food and our experience. It's a nice, convenient place to grab a sit-down lunch on the north side of town. I expect I'll be eating here again in the near future.
