Having been too many a dive bar, I knew what to anticipate. However, I wasn't that impressed. $8 plus toppings IS a bit excessive for a dive bar burger, which wasn't anything spectacular. Also, dives bar by their nature may not have the appearance of the cleanliness places, but when insulation is hanging from the ledges, I take issue. As for the beer selection, if I wanted a 3 Floyd's tap menu, I would have driven to Munster and ate there. The selection of bottles is good, but going out I prefer draft. Lastly, if you enjoy juke box music and food with your smoke, than Franklin House is your place to visit. For me, this is a 1 and done.

Great beer selections and good food. I would have gave it a full five stars but I miss the slanty floors. It was fun to watch drunk people try to dance to the bathroom on them. P.S. The womens restrooms are so much better now.

Great beer, super friendly staff, stupid good food and low prices. So glad I decided to give this place a try!

Local dive with digital juke box. Dollar beers ha!! Tuesdays are half price drinks! I hear this used to be a brothel back in the day. Excited to be here during popcorn fest coming up soon. For this town it's here & duffys.

Tuesday Boze night! Need I say more? ALL drinks are half off every Tuesdays. It's the place to be on a Tuesdays to get wasted for dirt cheap. Great pub food also, I love the tots!

The reason for the low rating is 100% due to the smoking. The food is great and beer selection can't be beat, but you cannot fully enjoy either with the cloud of smoke the suffocates you and follows you home. I would frequent this place if they stopped the smoking.

I've been a couple times. Each time was packed, and loud! I really like the atmosphere, definitely younger crowd.

This place is awesome! They have a fantastic craft beer selection and really friendly staff. The prices seemed reasonable to me. I heard the food was average. I didn't try any on this visit. They do allow smoking though. If it's an issue for you then you will probably have to skip this one. The ventilation didn't really seem all that great.

Had a great time, dancing to live music and drinking straight tequila. Ran into several people I know. I can't believe I've lived here in ValparaÃso all these years and never even stopped in.

Almost always a happening place. Awesome chicken tenders, decent prices and pretty well handled for a bar that has as many patrons as it does.

If you're looking for a dive bar with great food and an incredible beer list, this is the place for you. I had come here quite a while ago with my girlfriend and some friends of ours. We had drinks but our friends did order food. One had wings and one had a burger and they both said the food was very good. More recently, we've gotten burgers to go and they were very good. Even more recently, I took a buddy of mine here for a late dinner and a couple beers. They have some specialty burgers and also the 'build your own burger' option. They also have the 'build your own' option for several other sandwiches. After mulling over the choices, I asked the bartender what she recommended. She recommended the 'House Burger' and assured me that I would not be disappointed. I was a little leery being that the aforementioned burger consists of Swiss cheese, bacon, a fried egg, peanut butter and mayo all on a pretzel bun. Now don't get me wrong, I like everything I listed above, but on a burger? I decided to take her advice and was so glad that I did. My buddy got the same thing and he was impressed also. The flavor combinations worked so well together and the burger was cooked perfectly. The next night, my girlfriend and I came back. She did the 'build a burger' thing and I got the 'House Burger' again just so she could try it. Let me explain something about my girlfriend (who I love dearly). As far as food goes, she can be quite particular when it comes to flavor combinations and textures. Well, she was also impressed by this one and said that it was very good. I like my burgers cooked medium (like they should be) but she prefers hers more well done. Other than hers being a bit underdone for her taste, everything was wonderful. I also enjoyed a couple beers from their expansive list of craft beer. My girlfriend also tried a few sips of my 3 Floyd's Moloko, a delicious milk stout. She is not a beer drinker so I give her lots of credit for trying something new and very different. I know that there are other good 'gourmet' burger places in the area, and I'm not talking about the vastly subpar and overpriced Red Robin, but I think the Franklin House is going to be my go-to place for burgers given their absolute deliciousness and also their close proximity to my abode.

Very nostalgic place with much history. Nice place for a rail-fan. The food is very good. The bartenders suck very bad. I have been in there several times and their attitude is like Kiss-my-ass. They don't make an effort to know your name or what you drink. They express no joy or interest in their job or life. The bar tenders at Franklin House make Wheeler Inn seem like a disco. The only reason I will go is to scope the trim and not leave a tip. Word.

I don't know about the other people that have come here, but service is SUPER SLOW! Food is mediocre. I wouldn't come back if you paid for my food. Our apps came with / after our food, not before. Shit. Don't eat here.

Here's the play by play, no sugar coating: - Hipster Dive Bar - Beard friendly - Great beer selection (Three Floyds aplenty) - Great bar fare (apps, wings, burgers) - Fried Mac and Cheese - Fried Pickles - Immoral Bathroom - Dust from 1857 A Valparaiso Institution, and my kinda place!

Franklin house is what it is. It's a bar for people that want to be there. What the hell does that mean? It means if you like a divish type bar that frequently has bands, good service and moderately priced drinks, then you'll like this place. If you're looking for a bar to listen to some Justin Tumberlake and talk about your new puppy squashing SUV, you probably won't like it. Cons: - It's pretty noisy so a conversation with more than one person can be difficult. - It can get pretty smokey which only sucks if you're a non-smoker. Pros: - Good beer selection. - Good servers/bar tenders. For those of you that associate tattoos and piercings with bad service or bad people, feel free to stay away from here. Better stay away from most of the other bars in northwest indiana as well. Once I invent my time machine, I'll let you know and you can travel back to 1950 when wholesome people walked the streets.

I've been here many, many times since my last review, and have had many good experiences. their wings are surprisingly awesome! I got there special thanksgiving burger & split it with my boyfriend, and lemme tell ya, I wish I had gotten one to myself because that shit was delicious.

What happened to my beloved Franklin House? It seems in the time I moved away it's made the transition from charming, dive-y type place to one swarming with "wooo! girls." Sad story. Back in the day you could come grab a drink and sit with friends or maybe play some pool or sing karaoke. Now you've got drunken idiots swinging at each other and some chick wandering around in a bumble bee costume for no apparent reason. I'm giving a third star for the strong drinks, reasonable prices and patio. I'm disappointed but it's still the lesser of many evils as far as drinking in the region goes.

This place has done a 360 since a few years the food is actually really good now!! and they have the best beer selection in the area! They always have like five 3 Floyds on tap!! The bathrooms are still gross but that should get better over time..definitely the best bar in Valpo

Went on a Friday night around midnight on a solo bar run while visiting from out-of-town. Franklin House was packed. I stopped by a couple other bars in downtown Valpo and they were empty, so its either all or nothing: you can have a bar down the street all to yourself, or you can be crowded and literally surrounded by people at Franklin House. That being said, the crowd was very thoughtful and good to each other. As I made my way from one side to the other of the place, people were kindly moving out of the way, apologizing and saying "excuse me"... Indiana small town politeness. Hoodies and jeans are fine here, with a few people dressed up a little more. Good looking guys/girls who were anywhere from 20s through 40s in age. Good beer selection (bottles and drafts), prices were right, and the bar and door staff was very friendly and seemed professional. Also, lots of parking - huge lot in back behind the bar, and some street parking in the front. The bar itself is a historic building and I think its very cool inside. To sum it up, I liked the establishment, but I felt there wasn't much chance of striking up conversation here though or meeting someone new, because it was just too loud and crowded. People were yelling just to be able talk to people in their group of friends, and one loud group of girls at the bar was screaming. It was good to see people having fun with friends, but the noise and smoke got to me pretty quickly. Also as it was only midnight, I can imagine things only get rowdier as the night goes on.

Love it, best bar in town. Live bands every Friday, karaoke on Thursday and a DJ on Saturday! There is a new burger of the week, every week and amazing drink specials such as "Tuesday Boozeday" which is half off EVERYTHING you drink!

Our intention was to enjoy a nice lunch and a few beers at Figure 8, but since they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays we decided to try Franklin House instead. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by both the menu and the beer selection on tap (several Three Floyds, Guinness, Fat Tire, Smithwicks and a few others). My grilled chicken sandwich was better than good, and hubby's chicken wings were flavorful but a little dry. I built my own sandwich with bleu cheese and chipotle buffalo sauce on a pretzel roll with a side salad. The homemade vinaigrette dressing was nice, the salad is fresh and just the right portion. But the chipotle buffalo sauce was my favorite part of the meal. Nice combination of heat and flavor. We sat outside under the umbrellas and watched the traffic pass by. It's a good place for a quick lunch, but I don't see myself going out of my way for a second visit.

A solid bar with lots of local flavor. Trivia is played on Wednesday nights (prizes include free drinks) and the good menu is decent as well. Great place to have a few with friends.

How is this not 5 stars? They always have four-five 3-Floyds on tap with maybe a dozen total- a very good beer selection - the best this side of Munster (where the 3- Floyds brewpub is located). They have simple food, mostly hamburgers or hot dogs with about 100 variations on sides and toppings. I guess I've been there off hours so it wasn't all that crowded but I love the ambiance, an interesting crowd. Great beer.

I come here pretty much whenever I'm in NWI. Unlike other reviewers, I don't think tattoos or piercings have anything to do with service, and have only ever had good service at Franklin House. The only time I've seen the staff be rude is when someone is being drunk and belligerent - and at that point, it not so much them being rude as it is them getting the situation back in hand so everyone in the bar can enjoy their evening. I've been here for karaoke, and everyone seemed to be having a great time - if everyone who sang karaoke was exceptionally good, you'd loose something from the experience for sure. Bands also play here pretty regularly, and are often quite good for bands playing in a bar in Valpo. The only food I've ever had from here were some french fries, and they were all that you would expect from french fries. The mixed drinks are always strong, they have a good beer selection with a lot of local Indiana beers available, and their prices are reasonable. They also have a nice patio that is lovely to drink on when the weather is nice.

Place is gross and dirty. The "regulars" that hang out in this bar are the type of people you wouldn't want to cross paths with walking down a dark alley. Having to witness karaoke once, I was really embarrassed for the people that were "singing" and making fools out of themselves. No one should have to tolerate that. I agree with other reviewer...you are better off walking down to Passtimes.

This used to be our favorite neighborhood bar to hang out at. We had a problem with a server. Long story short she was drinking after her shift and did something out of line. I talked to the manager about it with in the week and he did nothing. The serve is mediocre, the staff is not friendly or attentive. Walk the extra block and go to Pass Times.

Just traveling through town and thought I would give Franklin House a shot. Of the places in Valparaiso I went to, it had a sizeable amount (and good mix) of people for an early Wednesday night. Drinks were cheap and decently strong. Layout is a little weird with two rooms (one full of tables and a bar, the other with a less full bar but bigger tables for groups). Wednesday night is trivia and there were several groups playing. I liked the mix of students, older people, hipsters, grunge, etc. Would probably be a go-to if I lived in Valpo. Lots of parking outside.

Nothing is keeping this dive bar from the 5 stars it deserves. The bathroom is updated and immaculate. Good job FH you are this guys Top Tier Dive Bar of NWI
(5)Emily ..
I have never had a dull time at this place. The star is super professional, and really fun. I've attended a handful of shows here, and have never been disappointed in their food selection. If you wet end up eating here, I suggest any burger with a pretzel bun! Don't be afraid to try their "burger of the week/month" at all, you won't be upset at their creativity.
